AN analysis of the bituminous coal situation by an authority who traces the production, mining, safety, markets and labor trends in comparison with other fuels. BEFORE 1918 the production of coal experienced a steady growth, with slight recessions in ouput in only twelve years (1837, 1841, 1852, 1855, 1861, 1874, 1876, 1889, 1894, 1905, 1909, 1914), and in each of these cases the loss was recovered in the following year and the increase continued. In each decade the output was doubled. Prices, while not high, allowed some profit. In 1918 during World War I, an output of 580 million tons was reached and with the exception of 1923 this total was not again reached until 1942, in World War 11. Losses of output in this period were much greater than ever before; in 1932 the total was 270 million tons less than in 1918 or 1923, and the loss after 1923 was not recovered until 1942. The greatest output was 631 million tons in 1947.

Stock piling-and by that I mean well-organized stock piling on a substantial scale-is almost as old as the hills themselves. It was back in early Biblical times, as recounted in the Book of Genesis, that Joseph was charged by Pharaoh with the responsibility of stock piling food during the seven years of plenty to guard against the seven subsequent years of famine that were revealed by the Pharaoh's dream. And this same policy of storing up food or materials to provide for future anticipated emergencies can be traced repeatedly down through the ages. So our own efforts are anything but new. Our modern concept of stock piling-the purchase and storage of strategic materials to assure supplies needed in time of some future war- stems from our experience in World War I. In 1920, the War Department was charged by Congress with the responsibility of procuring all War Department supplies and mobilizing industry in the event of another war. During the two decades that followed there were many authoritative studies made of our deficient mineral problem, all of which pointed out the urgent necessity of stock piling certain strategic materials as a reserve against future war. One such study, made in 1925 through the combined efforts of the Mining and Metallurgical Society and the AIME, was done at the ex- press request of the War Department. It has been shown for an important class of complex transition intermetallic compounds (a, P, R, 6, and p phases) characterized by "normal" coordination [CN12 (icosahedral), CN14, CN15, CN16/ that interatomic distances nay be calculated to a good approximation as the sum of characteristic atomic radii. Two radii, one for major ligands and one for minor ligmds, are specified for each atom, except in the case of CN12 where only a miaaor-ligand radius is specified. The same appears to be true of transition-metal phases of simpler struc-ture: Laves phases (CN12, CN16), and p-tungsten phases (CN12, CN14). In the case of known examples of the more complex phases, a simple rule is given which specifies these radii. However, only a fraction of the known examples of the simpler phases obey this rule closely. To include the latter phases the rule may be modified by considering the radii as linear functions of the weighted average of the Pauling CN12 radii of the two kinds of atonzs, with the radii weighted according to the over-all chemical composition of the alloy. With very few exceptions interatomic distances for both tlze complex and the simpler transition phases can b$ predicted with this modified rule to within 0.06A. ManY intermetallic compounds are known of composition A,By, in which A is a transition element to the left of the manganese column in the periodic table and B is a transition element in or to the right of it. Frequently the coordination numbers (CN) found in these compounds are CN12 (icosahedral), CN14, CN15, and CN16 (called "normal" coordinations by Frank and Kasperl). Well-known examples are the cubic and hexagonal Laves phases which have CN12 and CN16, and the 0-tungsten (CrsO) phases which have CN12 and CN14. In the more complicated (often ternary) phases, such as the a phase,2 the Beck phases p3 and R~, the 6 phase,5 and the p p atoms occur with CN12, CN14, CN15, and (except for a) CN16; in many cases several crystallographically independent atoms of one particular CN occur in the asymmetric unit. A large number of independent interatomic distances are found in these complicated phases, varying from 20 in the a phase to 94 in the 6 phase. These distances show a large spread; they vary, for example, from 2.358 to 3.278A in the 6 phase. In our analysis of these distances we found that in each of these compounds every atomic position can be characterized by either one or two radii. The CN12 positions are characterized by a single radius, The higher coordinated positions are characterized by two radii, namely: the CN14 positions by 4 in the direction of the twelve "5-coordinated" ligands3 (called 'minor" by Frank and Kasperl) and by r:, in the direction of the two "6-coordi-nated" ligands (called "major" by Frank and Kasper); the CN15 positions by r15 for the twelve minor and r:, for the three major ligands; the CN16 positions by rlE for the twelve minor and r:, for the four major ligands. We have expressed the experimentally determined interatomic distances in observational equations as the sums of the appropriate pairs of these characteristic radii and the value of these radii have been determined by the method of least Squares. Despite their wide range, the interatomic distances could then be predicted by the sums of these atomic radii with an average deviation in any one compound of 0.06A or less. The results are summarized in Table I. Inspection of the radii thus obtained shows that in the structures in Table I the radii (in A) are given to a first approximation by the simple relationship: Where CN is the coordination number (12, 14, 15, or 16), and A = 1 for major ligands and = 0 for minor ligands. The interaLomic distances can be predicted within about 0.1A by sums of these atomic radii. Another phase belonging in this group with CN12, 14, 15, and 16 is the y phase & B7, in which A is molybdenum or tungsten and B is iron or cobalt. Recently the M%C phase has been refinedE and the observed distances also agree well with those calculated with Eq. [I]. (In the original determination of the structure of W6FeV7 the F$(II)-W(II1) distance was erroneously given as 2.84A, but we have recalculated it fro? the published parameters and found it to b? 2.57i4, in good agreement with the value of 2.6A predicted with Eq. Mr. Morton and I have changed the order of the questions. Instead of what is now first, we have put No. 3 first, progress on basic-roof construction, inasmuch as we feel that it is quite important. At this time, H. S. Robertson, of Harbison-Walker, is going to give you a short talk, with slides, on what has been done to date on this subject.

Additional data have been secured on the disintegration of furnace linings and the spalling of stove brick. The first article on the disintegration of furnace linings appears to have been written by John Pattinson in 1876.l The furnace involved was 85 ft. (25.0 m.) higher and 27 ft. (8.2 m.) in diameter at the boshes; after being in blast five years, the top brick became contaminated with carbon and disintegrated. An examination of the lining showed that the discolored, disintegrated brick were in a zone found from 35 to 67 ft. (10.6 to 20.4 m.) above the hearth; immediately below, in a zone extending from 22 to 40 ft. (6.7 to 12.1 m.) above the hearth, the brick were hard and porcelain-like in appearance. Analyses of samples taken from the different sections are given in Table I. The water-soluble portion found in the sample taken 39 ft. (11.8 m.) above the hearth had a composition approximately as follows: silica, 0.50 per cent.; lime, 0.04 per cent.; potash, 0.78 per cent.; soda, 0.20 per cent.; potassium chloride, 6.19 per cent.; moisture, 1.03 per cent.; total, 8.74 per cent. The mining, metallurgical, and petroleum industries can be viewed as financial or as social institutions or both. The differences between these two conceptions of their businesses will influence their environmental 'and social actions. During the next 10-20 years western industry will be subject to a drop in the growth of a more highly educated labour force and to the emergence of holistic economics, new national goals, and a new ecological perspective. The profitability of the mining industry may therefore be influenced by the human side of its business to a greater degree. The increasing human, social, and environmental responsibilities can be discharged by improving the miner's equipment; by learning to look at situations through the eyes of all those involved; by developing common 'languages' which governments and the public can understand; and by mediating where feasible on the international scene.

Lead sulphate occurs as anglesite, and is formed in every roasting of lead sulphides or sulpho-salts containing lead. In smelting in the blast furnace an ore containing natural or artificial lead sulphate, a large part of the sulphur present goes to the formation of the intermediary product matte which requires further treatment for the recovery of the values it contains. It is therefore of importance to study the behavior of lead sulphate at elevated temperatures, both without and with reducing agents, especially as the information available gives data which are more or less conflicting. 11. Decomposition of PbS04 by Heat The dissociation of PbSO4 into PbO and SO3 or SO2 and 0 has been discussed by many metallurgists. The following data are considered to be representative. Doeltz and Graumannl found that PbS04 was not affected-by heat at 800" C.; that dissociation began at 900" C., and was rapid at 1,000° when the salt lost in 1 1/2 hr. 14.3 per cent. of its weight, the dry salt containing 26.43 per cent. SO3. Hofman and Wanjukow2 summarize their work upon the dissociation of metallic sulphates with the statement that the decomposition of PbS04 begins at 195' C., but progresses very slowly, with the formation of the basic salt 6PbO.5SO3 at 705"; that this salt undergoes a transformation at 847") begins to be decomposed at 888") to sinter at 896", and to fuse at 910"; rapid dissociation begins at 952") and is accompanied by volatilization of PbO; retardations at 958" and 962" indicate an acceleration of decomposition which, however, is not complete. Proske3 found that PbSO4 gave off at 900" C. in 30 min. only 0.63 per cent. of its 803, and that the loss increased with

CERRO'S power system consists of three main hydroelectric plants and one steam-electric plant. These are located on the eastern slope of the main Andes range at altitudes between 12,000 and 13,000 ft. The hydroelectric group utilizes the watershed which extends for about 150 kilometers south from Cerro de Pasco, divided into two catchment areas which lie adjacent. The northern area serve,, the medium-head plant of Mal¬paso. while the southern area provides for the high-head plants at Pachachaca and Oroya. The rainfall, as registered at the rain gauging stations of the three hydroelectric plants, averages 33 in. per year; all these stations are subject to the same hydrological conditions, and the bulk of precipitation occurs between October and March. Rainfall during the dry season, April till September, has no appreciable effect on the total annual runoff. Table 1 shows the storage capacities of the main reservoirs of the hydroelectric group. THE territory under particular consideration in this article comprises portions of La Plata and Montezuma Counties, situated in the southwestern corner of Colorado, and around the base of the La Plata Mountains. (See Fig. 1.) In southeastern Utah and northeastern Arizona there are several mountain systems whose origin and structure are practically identical with the La Platas so that ore occurrences found in the latter can be hopefully looked for in the former. With this assumption, there is an area around the laccolithic ranges which offers promise for a successful exploration for gold ores. Ore occurrences of the Silverton, Telluride, Rico, or Ouray Districts will not be discussed, although in these areas the Mesozoic sediments are more or less involved within the ore-bearing complex. These have been intensively studied and developed. The idea is to set forth what my mining experience has been within the largely unaltered . Mesozoic horizon which remains around the extreme bases of the La Plazas. This, until recent years, has been almost entirely neglected by prospectors and operators and, so far as similar territory in Utah and Arizona is concerned, so remains.

A PAPER recently presented before the Anthracite Section of the A. I. M. E. by S. J. Phil- lips, Mine Inspector, Fifth Anthracite District, Department of Mines of Pennsylvania, covering the water hazards in the anthracite coal mines of the Lackawanna River Valley, was especially timely because the conditions there are duplicated to a large extent in the Wyoming Valley, which is traversed by the Susquehanna River with its many large tributary streams. Also, in the southern anthracite field, where there are a number of large creeks, similar pumping problems and mine water hazards will in time be presented if mining is continued to its conclusion.

The static, rapid, and shock-loading response of rock is of interest to many in the field of rock mechanics. For example, the effects of loading rates on strength and stress-strain characteristics of rock are quite important in defining input loading for use in the design of underground protective installations. Response data on rock subjected to shock loading over a wide range of pressures are also vital in the field of underground nuclear testing. In addition, material response is needed in design of shock-absorbing liners. A number of investigators have reported that ultimate compressive strength of rock increases with increased rates of loading.1-6 Wuerker3 stated that modulus of elasticity, obtained from sonic determinations, increased in some rocks by a factor as high as 4.5. It appears that only a limited amount of work has been done on comparing static modulus and modulus obtained from impact testing.6 Phillips4 showed that with increased rates of loading the deformation decreased. More recent work by Atchley and Furr5 showed that when moderate-strength concrete is stressed with increased loading rates, the axial strain at failure increased. One would expect this to occur if we think in terms of purely elastic materials. For example, if E is constant and maximum strength [amax], increases, the axial strain would also increase. However, in rock testing thus far we have worked almost exclusively with nonhomogeneous and inelastic rocks. From this fact alone the increase in axial strain with increased load application is noteworthy.

The most widely discussed of these defects is hydrogen embrittlement, but the conception, perhaps the popular one, that embrittlelnent is due to hydride formation aoes not conform to the known facts.l04 The true identity of hydrogen embrittlement seems instead to lie in a mosaic nature of metal crystals, which is a concept not Yet accepted by most metallurgists. A study of hydrogen embrittlement therefore provides new viewpoints in regard to the crystalline substructure of steel.

EVERY user of steel should ask himself whether or not he is taking full advantage of the discoveries of the steel metallurgists during the last few years, or is merely buying grades that looked to be the best five or ten years ago for various specific purposes and have since proved perfectly satisfactory in his plant. If he has not kept abreast of the times, then it is probable that something better has been developed, or something just as good that costs less. Though this article will have to do with steel for high-temperature applications primarily, marked advances have been made in steels for other purposes as well.

ECONOMIC utilization of all by-products has long been the goal of American industry. One of the first groups that was popularly supposed to have achieved its aim was the meat-packing industry, which reputedly found a use for everything except the squeal of the hog. To the metallurgist, slag has always been the principal wasted by-product, representing a loss not only of material, but of heat. Slag does not possess many qualities that appeal to man's imagination or suggest a romantic influence on the daily life and progress of a community or nation. It is a bulky product, and space for its disposal within reasonable hauling distance of a smelter is not always available; the iron-ore smelter especially has been wont to find space for slag disposal at a premium. Therefore, the success that has been attained in recent years in finding a use for iron blast-furnace slag is notable. It has become a vital economic factor in the construction industry in areas where it is available. Its use may suggest further possibilities of an economic outlet for the slags from nonferrous smelting as well.

AS BOTH South Africa and diamond mining are unfamiliar subjects it seems best that on such an occasion as this I should endeavor to reflect the atmosphere of the place and to picture the mines from an industrial rather than from a technical standpoint and, because of long absence, my remarks must necessarily be sketchy and in some particulars not up to date. The preferable route to South Africa is via England, direct steamers from America being inferior as to service and effecting no saving of time. The newer boats are of about 20,000 tons capacity and very comfortable. Seventeen days are required for the voyage and only one stop is made-that at the island of Madiera, three days out.
