Hydrocarbon fuel oils are one of the main components of ammonium nitrate-based explosives, including ANFO (Ammonium Nitrate-Fuel Oil) and emulsions. While a wide variety of fuels can, and have, been used in the manufacture of ANFO and emulsion products, No. 2 diesel, particularly dyed, off-road diesel, is widely used due to its ready availability and use in fueling mining equipment. However, a number of alternatives to standard diesel have been introduced over recent years, namely, biofuels, ‘high-performance’ diesels, and renewable diesels. The pressure to adopt these alternative fuels come from a variety of sources, such as initiatives to reduce carbon footprints, increased lifetime of equipment, and cost-advantages from tax credits. While these factors may provide a very real benefit to the mine site, a consideration that is often missed is how the use of these fuels can impact the formulation and characteristics of the ammonium nitrate-based explosives. Herein will be presented a discussion of these alternative fuels from a chemical perspective as well as the results of several studies focused on how the inclusion of various alternative diesels influences the production and performance of ammonium nitrate explosives. ANFO and emulsion were manufactured using representative fuel sources and studying in terms of the manufacturing parameters, shelf-life, interaction with other chemicals using in mining explosives. Detonation data was then collected for these products and compared to the behavior of products made with standard diesel fuels.

In the modern world of demolition safety is paramount and unnecessary or unquantifiable risks are not accepted (FasterCapital, 2024) and all risks must be kept As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) (BSI, 2017). This principle has led to a huge reduction in deaths in the last 50 years and the statistics continue to improve although this is starting to plateau (Beal, 2007). Under normal circumstances, this is now simply part of the normal way work is done and systems are in place to ensure both safety and economic profits are assured. What happens when the environment is less controlled and risks are unknown, such as after a natural disaster, war, an accident or a stand-up from a failed demolition attempt? A dangerous structure cannot responsibly be left alone with a fence around it so some action must be taken, but how can this be done safely and responsibly? An incident in Didcot, England in which half of a power station’s boiler house being prepared for an explosive demolition collapsed suddenly, killing four men in 2016 provides a useful case study of how technology, creativity and planning can be used to conduct complex demolition fully remotely to avoid any further risk to life.

It is well-known that blasting has an economic effect on grade control activities. However, until recently, methods did not exist for measuring the grade control value change caused by the blast. Rules of thumb were the best method to minimize ore loss and dilution, as simulation has been traditionally constrained by time and computer power. Even with these rules followed, an extensive study performed on over 150 blasts showed that the value change caused by the blasts followed a normal distribution – some blasts created value, and some blasts destroyed value. The question naturally asked was “How can we ensure the blast designs are optimized to create value?” Recent advancements in computer power have enabled real-time blasting simulations that create post-blast grade control models before the blast is fired. Understanding what will happen before it happens allows blasters and grade control personnel to iterate designs, searching for the highest value achievable.

The Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME), a non-profit safety and security organization founded in 1913, is known for its industry best practices, Safety Library Publications (SLP), some of which have been incorporated into rules by regulatory agencies. The IME developed the first commercial storage, quantity distance (Q/D) table titled “The American Table of Distances” (ATD). It was developed by IME’s legacy association in 1910 and was originally based on observations of structural damage from 117 accidental explosions involving small to very large amounts of explosives, primarily dynamite and black powder. In 1930, the IME published a book, compiled by Ralph Assheton, called the “History of Explosions on Which the American Table of Distances was Based”. The distance in feet in the ATD were founded on the measurements at which inhabited buildings sustained substantial structural damage from the accidental detonation of explosives. For example, minor damage such as window glass breakage and the “shaking down” of plaster was not considered substantial structural damage. Other damage to property that was readily repairable was also not considered “substantial.” It was concluded that unless some integral portion of the building was damaged, the occupants would not be subjected to serious risks.

"Previous work indicated that the annual per-capita consumption of raw aggregate material averages about 10 tons; half of which is produced by blasting. Given a population of approximately 320 million in the United States alone, this amounts to 1.6 billion tons of blasted material annually. It was also estimated that up to 20% of the blasted material in aggregate operations is smaller than 6.35 mm (1/4inch) in size. Thus, about 320 million tons (i.e. 1 ton per capita) of byproduct is produced annually and sold at significantly lower prices or potentially discarded in waste dumps."

This paper is intended to give a summary of the first ten Symposia on Rock Fragmentation by Blasting where the symposia activities were governed by a Steering Committee replaced at Fragblast 2 by an International Organizing Committee (IOC). At Fragblast 9 the name was changed to Fragblast International Organizing Committee (FIOC). Eighty four pages of statistical data about Fragblast 1-10 is documented on the Fragblast Website (ISEE.org).

After the disbanding of the Gunpowder Trust Association in 1904, the Association of Independent Powder and Dynamite Manufacturers was formed, followed in May of 1906 by the formation of the Association of Manufacturers of Powder and High Explosives. A model is being developed to quantify the benefits for mining houses resulting from the reduction in greenhouse gas and energy consumption by the application of innovative blast designs in addition to direct financial benefits throughout the mine to mill value chain. The conversion from shock tube initiation systems to electronics and some changes to powder factor measured on an open pit mine had previously been used to show significant improvement on blast outputs. Benefits were realised on drilling, blasting, loading, hauling and beneficiation. Quantification of the relationship between powder factor and reduced greenhouse gasses is investigated in this study. The study has highlighted new data that must be recorded and hence some assumptions were made as to fuel consumption and the energy in crushing was obtained from the Bond work equation. The mine to mill projects in an open pit platinum mine and a quarry produced energy savings and reduced greenhouse gas emissions associated with the careful application of explosives and blast innovations. The less fines project showed an increased carbon footprint. The model provides a new insight into how project feasibility should be decided based on economic and environmental viability.

This case study focuses on analysis of sounds inside a house induced by blasts as result of surface mining coal in West Virginia and how to better communicate technical information to the public. The field study included a house wide vibration and sound monitoring system installed in a home which was subjected to blasts at varied distances and direction. The structure response was separated into ground vibration and airblast induced movement due to the differences in their times of arrival. This signal was then compared to the sounds recorded to determine which component of blast (ground vibration or airblast) induced the maximum sound. Findings shows that blasts at distances less than 762 meters (2,500 feet) had maximum sound responses from both ground vibration and airblast. While for blasts beyond this distance the maximum sound response was caused by ground vibration without exception. The kitchen generally created the most sound. The second phase of the study was to gauge the public’s response or preference to technical information. Three hundred and forty eight (348) telephone surveys were conducted in Logan and Boone counties West Virginia. Based on the survey, the public prefers units of pounds per square inch (psi) for airblast and millimeters of displacement for ground vibration. Ultimately a public relations plan was developed based on the results.

The Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME) and A-P-T Research, Inc (APT) have developed and released a quantitative risk management tool, IMESAFR (IME Safety Analysis For Risk), for the commercial explosives industry. Consequence algorithms in IMESAFR are considered state-of-the-art. Generally, they mirror those in SAFER (US Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board quantitative risk management software). The science behind the software has now been assessed for its maturity. Results have identified areas where additional test consequence data could improve predictions. To address these areas, full-scale testing programs to provide the needed data have been formulated. Proposed testing efforts include work to: (1) improve characterization of explosive articles now absent from SAFER, and (2) refine modeling of the Potential Explosion Site (PES) types, particularly small metal structures, also not found in SAFER. Goals of each program as well as requirements for conducting the tests have been established. Testing results are to be used to improve the algorithms and to further the state-of-the-art in risk-based explosives safety.

Of the common causes of the larger mine accidents, such as falls of roof and coal, gas and dust explosions, mine fires, and the misuse of explosives, all of which are often closely related, each must be studied and fought in a manner peculiar to itself. The last mentioned, the misuse of black powder and other explosives, is sometimes considered the least important of these causes of mine accidents; but its importance is much greater than the statistics indicate, for the reason that the misuse of explosives is the true cause of many of the fatal mine fires, gas or dust explosions, and falls of roof that are credited to other causes.

We have in southeast Kansas a variety of soils underneath which are a variety of subsoils compressed into what is commonly called “ hard pan.” These soils are of six types, ranging from a clay to a sandy loam. The surface soil in Cherokee County and Crawford County, of whatever quality or type is, generally speaking, from 6 to 12 inches in depth. Due to the global financial crisis, the world economy has turned upside down and most major economies in the world are facing severe recession for the past one and half year. During this period most commodity prices have tumbled by more than half from their peaks and such a sudden and severe economic downturn is not seen since the great depression. Blasting off-the-solid is the most commonly used method during development of galleries in Bord and Pillar method of underground coal mining. In this method, only P5 explosives are used with permitted delay detonators in accordance with the safety requirements stipulated by the regulatory bodies. Delay detonators made with pyrotechnic delay compositions have inherent scattering in their delay timings. It is desirable to use precise detonators to achieve better fragmentation, less vibration and noise. Overlapping of delay period is undesirable from production as well as safety point of view.
