When the writer first saw the square-set timbering, he was at once impressed with the fact that the frames made by the sets, along the lode and across it, were composed of panels with rectangular openings, and it was puzzling to understand howsuch a collapsible construction could resist pressure that came unevenly on it. Later he learnt that the sets did not satisfactorily resist such pressure, but mullock filling had, to a great extent, to undertake this duty for them. So it appeared that the setswere practically an expensive scaffolding, enabling the miners to work in the face and carry the stope forward, till the filling was put in behind them to take the pressure of the roof and sides of the excavation. Of course some of the pressure is takenby the sets, but this is because "the set timbers prevent the filling being done perfectly; if it were practicable to remove the sets before filling, the filling by itself would more effectively support the back and wall, than do the combined sets andmullock. On the whole, therefore, the sets can hardly be said to be of much benefit where pressure has to be resisted. "The treatment of water is required at many mining operations to remove metals and prevent the discharge of contaminated water to the environment. In other cases, water treatment is used to provide better quality water for recycle to the processing plant, or to process bleed streams in hydrometallurgical operations in order to prevent deterioration in metallurgical performance or process equipment. BioteQ Environmental Technologies Inc. has developed and commercialized the BioSulphide® Process which can provide an alternative for these treatment needs and which can also be used for profitable metal recovery, particularly in cases where conventional metal winning techniques are not economical. The BioSulphide® Process is a high rate anaerobic biotechnology for on-site production of H2S from sulphur species, although for smaller flows and metal loadings, the use of chemical sulphide reagent might be more cost effective. Both new projects and existing commercial operations, used for removal and/or recovery of copper, nickel, and zinc, and which range in sulphide generating capacity from 50 kg/day to 3.7 tonnes/day, are discussed. Particular focus is placed on the results of operations at the Raglan Mine in Northern Quebec where dissolved nickel is removed from contaminated water at a high efficiency through the precipitation of nickel sulphide. Plant effluent is discharged directly to the receiving environment and the high-grade nickel sulphide product is combined with the nickel flotation concentrate produced at the mine. The plant at Raglan will replace the existing conventional water treatment plant and will eliminate the need for on-site storage of treatment plant sludge.INTRODUCTIONThe BioSulphide® Process, which produces low cost H2S for use in selective metal precipitation, offers a low capital cost alternative which can operate efficiently and cost-effectively within a wide range of flows and solution grades. Since the technology can be used to recover metals from solutions with low flows and metal grades, the technology is also applicable to environmental applications for water treatment, with the sale of recovered metals providing an offset to treatment costs. For environmental control, the technology has a distinct advantage in being able to meet strict effluent discharge criteria due to the very low solubility of metal sulphides. To date, BioteQ Environmental Technologies has designed and constructed three plants for metal sulphide precipitation, with another three projects in the advanced development stage."

This investigation was carried on by means of models and the application of the principles of similitude to determine the effects of props, props and cribs and sand filling in longwall mining. The geologic structure and rate of face retreat were kept constant and the only change introduced was in the method of support. It is not felt necessary to repeat a description of apparatus, or to explain the fact that a scalar model made in all parts of the same material as the prototype will behave similarly to the prototype when rotated at speeds such that the centrifugal force is as many times the gravitational force as the prototype dimension is a similar linear model dimension. The reader is referred to earlier papers1,2 for further information regarding these statements. All models were made of sandstone and were as in Fig. 6. They are composed of a 3/16-in. ore body bed A, overlain by a 3/16-in. bed B, a ?-in. bed C and two ?-in. beds D and E. The model was rotated at + 2350 r.p.m. equivalent to a model ratio of 1268. It was worked back ¼ in. at a time before being replaced in the centrifuge and again rotated. Table 1 gives model and prototype dimensions occurring in this discussion, the prototype dimensions being 1268 times the model dimensions. Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 were taken while the model was rotating at 2350 r.p.m. One was taken for each face retreat of 26.4 ft., but for obvious reasons all are not presented. Fig. 1 (A-E) shows the behavior of this type of structure with face retreats of 26.4 ft. and no artificial support. The Fort Randall Reservoir project, on the Missouri River at Pickstown, S. Dak., was designed by the Corps of Engineers and is part of the Missouri River Basin Development Program. The location of the project with respect to adjacent features is shown' in figure 1. When the project is finished, it will include a large earthwork dam and 12 circular tunnels, 8 of which will be equipped for power and 4 for flood control. Various phases of the construction have been contracted to independent companies, and at present four companies are working on different phases of the project under a rigid time schedule. Western Contracting Corp. is the contractor on stage II, earthwork; Johnson-Winston Construction Co. is the contractor for construction of the intake towers at the upstream side of the dam; McCarthy Improvement Co. has the contract for the power house and the outlet works on the downstream side; and Silas Mason Co. has the contract for driving the power and flood-control tunnels. The latter two companies use the same roads for ingress and egress to their respective work areas and the same general waste dump area. Under such circumstances, it is necessary that each company stay on a time schedule in regular sequence to avoid interference with the other.

A crosshole seismic imaging (tomography) experiment has been carried out in an underground mine in order to delineate waste rock within a massive sulphide ore body. Data comprising 1526 travel time measurements were inverted to yield a compressional wave speed image consistent with, and adding to, knowledge of the extent of the waste inclusions. An effective method of resolving travel time discrepancies measured on reversed ray paths is presented.

Paper presented at Geofluids '93, held in Torquay, UK, 4-7 May 1993. The tin field consists of a fragment of Lower Proterozoic volcanosedimentary rocks surrounded by granitoids. Almost all the significant deposits are hosted by arkoses and are classified as replacement and space-filling types, with particular styles of mineralisation dominating at different mines. Petrological and geochemical investigation of borehole cores from four centres indicated the presence of a stratified zone 500-600 m thick and continuous over at least 20 km along strike, consisting of pervasively altered clastic arenitic sediments. The alteration is zoned into a grey-green sodic albitised footwall, an 80 m thick sericitised-tourmalinised sulphidic tin zone and a red haematitic potassic hanging-wall. The zoning and the localisation of three cassiterite phases are consistent with the tectonic history and with multiple pulses of stanniferous hydrothermal fluids derived from late differentiates of the granites over a prolonged period. Areas of high fracture density acted as conduits for the fluids, whose initially rapid ascent was retarded by decreasing pressure contrast, limited development of fracturing and/or impermeable shaly arkose to cause lateral spreading and pervasive alteration over a broad, stratified front. Lateral overlapping of local fronts at the various centres suggests a continuous zone, while the many petrological and geochemical similarities point to a shared fluid composition

The success of smooth blasting essentially depends on geological condition of rock. Also, in the perimeter hole, borehole pressures with light, well-distributed explosive loads are important to minimise overbreak. In order to simulate perimeter holes with scaled model test, the borehole pressure was considered as a factor of scale. Hydraulic oil pressure is applied as borehole pressure instead of using explosives and detonators in order to remove the undesirable effects of detonators in an experimental set-up of just two perimeter holes in a tunnel blast. The borehole pressure on a perimeter hole is nearly reproduced with hydraulic pressure which is generated by non-electric detonators in the hermetical cylinder.

"The business performance of mining corporations in South Africa is adversely affected by the constantly increasing electricity costs. The most commonly used power sources are the national utility supplier via a grid connection, and on-site diesel generators. Previous research has identified the renewable sources of solar photovoltaic (PV), onshore wind, and geothermal energy in hybrid versions with current sources as possible opportunities to counteract rising electricity costs. To provide a clear understanding of the new, developing market of renewable energy sources, this research is divided into two papers. This first paper investigates the internal business structure of mining corporations in order to evaluate electricity generating sources. The multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) method is selected as the most suitable approach for this. The paper identifies the criteria used by mining corporations to evaluate possible electricity generation sources for self-generation by means of the corporations’ own investment. Four mining corporations with several mining locations were interviewed. The interviews revealed both new and identical evaluation criteria when the findings were compared to earlier MCDA adaptations analysed in the literature review. The second paper (Part 2) combines current knowledge about the external macroeconomic environment with the findings about the internal environment described here. MCDA is adapted in Part 2 and implemented to analyse and compare current to hybrid renewable sources from the perspective of mines. IntroductionMining corporations in South Africa are currently adversely affected by increasing electricity prices. Electricity is supplied mainly by Eskom1 and, especially in remote locations, by on-site diesel generators (Boyse et al., 2014). Electricity price increases, emanating from diesel price hikes and Eskom, have escalated the total operational expenditure on electricity by the largest mining corporations from 8% to 20% of total operating costs in the past seven years (EIUG, 2015). The reliability of electricity supplied by Eskom has decreased drastically (Govender, 2008), and the prices will increase annually by at least 13% until 2018 (Numbi et al., 2014; Eskom, 2015b). In addition, the South African government plans to introduce a carbon tax on greenhouse gas emissions (Alton et al., 2014)."

The Phu Kham copper-gold operation located in Laos People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. PanAust Limited, based in Brisbane Australia, holds a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining Limited, with the remaining 10 per cent held by the Government of Laos PDR.The 12Mt/y copper-gold concentrator at Phu Kham commenced production in April 2008. Flotation copper and gold recovery from commissioning was consistently poor, due to the high levels of pyrite and problematic secondary and oxide copper species and non-sulfide gangue.The low recoveries of copper and gold from Phu Kham were recognised during the feasibility study design phase. A bulk sulfide flotation regime in roughing produced high recoveries, however a large capacity cleaning circuit was required and there was risk of not meeting saleable concentrate grade specifications. The installed design offered a capital efficient compromise to ensure that a concentrate grade of 24% copper could be achieved at acceptable recoveries.Incremental improvements in copper recovery were achieved by 2011 through conversion of conditioning cells to flotation cells in both roughing and first cleaning and increased cleaner capacity through the installation of a Jameson cell. In 2012 the Phu Kham Upgrade Project was commissioned to increase mill throughput, along with additional rougher and cleaner capacity to increase residence times at the nominal 16 Mt/y throughput. The marginal reduction in primary grind size due to the additional ball milling power also provided a small recovery improvement.This paper presents the development, design, implementation, and performance of the Increased Recovery Project commissioned in April 2013 which targeted the major causes of copper loss from the circuit. Based on fundamental and detailed test work and mineralogical analysis of concentrator streams, an optimised design was developed which has increased copper and gold recoveries by over 5% and 10% respectively. The Increased Recovery Project has positioned the concentrator to process high pyrite ores that were previously considered untreatable, and opened further opportunities for maximising flotation recovery by de-bottlenecking plant regrind and cleaning capacity.CITATION:Hoyle, A, Bennett, D and Walker, P, 2015. The Sutong Bridge across the lower Yangtze River in China will have, when completed, the longest span (1,088 m) and the highest towers (306 m) of any cable stayed span in the world. The foundations for this record setting span will also be record setting. They are located in water depths exceeding 30 m with maximum flows exceeding 3 m/sec. The soil at the site of the main pylons consists of layers of silty sands and silty clays extending to bed rock at 270 m below river elevation. This paper describes the innovative methods used by the team of foundation designers and constructors to support this record setting bridge at this very challenging site. This paper covers three specific topics related to the foundations of the Sutong Bridge: ? Design and construction of the 131 drilled shafts (2.8/2.5 m diameter and 114/117 m long) under each of the two main pylons, including the post-grouting of all drilled shaft tips. ? Design and construction of the scour protection for the two main pylons. ? Construction methods used to construct the waterline pile caps (113.8 m by 48.1 m by 13.3 m deep) under each pylon.

This paper examines some of the fundamental economics of mining - in particular, for optimisation studies, for production rate determination and for reserve estimates.It includes introductory discussion on the principles as to how economics drives mining investment decision-making, applicable to the optimising of pit shapes and production, or truck fleets, or any other part of the mine.The main part of this paper looks at the decision to start-up a mine and why the 'optimum' production rate to start-up a mine is not the point of lowest cost according to traditional discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis. The optimum production rate is usually substantially less than this rate. The paper recognises the difference between typical mining investments and investments in other industries that do not have the unique characteristics of mining and the problem of uncertainty resolution. It examines the marginal revenue effects, the marginal cost of capital and the value of a real option to expand pending uncertainty resolution as determinants of optimum initial production rates.The final part of this paper looks at applying these principles to renewable and non-renewable resources. It examines mine life and reserve estimates from an economic perspective.

This report, summarizing the results of two studies sponsored by the Bureau of Mines, presents information on the types of mobile machines used in surface coal mines in the United States, and the amount of noise to which miners are exposed. Data consist of a calculated value of the probability of noise overexposure caused by specific equipment. These data are extrapolated to estimate the number of overexposed operators. Bulldozers were identified as the major contributors to noise overexposure, and the report presents results of a Bureau-funded program on the feasibility of providing retrofit noise control on bulldozers.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the development of a preliminary design for a novel, protected, cab-shuttle car for use in working seam heights down to 40 in. Because of the severe restrictions imposed by low-coal operation, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations only require canopy protection on shuttle cars operating in seam heights of 42 in or greater. MSHA routinely grants variances for canopy use in seams 48 in high or less. The design was generated by giving the operator needs equal priority as related to machine performance parameters. Cab-shuttle car concepts that led to the recommended design are described, along with criteria and testing used to evaluate their potential effectiveness.

At the request of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) the Bureau of Mines evaluated the potential hazards of three compressed oxygen self-contained self-rescuers (SCSR's) designed for use in under-ground coal mines. The evaluation followed the lines used in a similar investigation of chemical self-rescuers and involved laboratory experiments as well as field trials designed to simulate a mining environment. They included bullet impact, bonfire, feeder-breaker impact and feed-through, and mining machine runover tests. The work showed that the units were not inherently unsafe but that under certain conditions of extreme abuse they can present a potential ignition or explosion hazard. This, coupled with a survey of reported damage on SCSR's currently deployed in underground mines, which indicated a relatively high frequency of incidents leading to the destruc-tion of the units, led to new recommendations on the deployment of SCSR's. The recommendations formulated by MSHA state that the units should be either properly worn by the miner, stored in heavy containers, or otherwise protected from situations in which they might be accidentally ruptured or destroyed, such as runover by mobile mining equipment.

The Project alignment initiates north of Pinerolo, along the State Road 23[S.S. 23] that is one of the principal arteries to the northwestern Alps where a number of Olympic events for the 2006 Winter Games will be held. The 3.5 km ring road bypasses the Porte habitat by traversing twice the Chisone River. It consists of the following principal structures [Figure 1]: San Martino bridge [130 m in four bays] Prarostino viaduct [130 m in four bays] Craviale tunnel [1055 m] Turinella bridge [a 50 m long bridge that connects the two tunnels] Turina tunnel [665 m] Malanaggio viaduct [350 m in 9 bays]. The road section is 13 m wide and is made up of two 3.75 m lanes, a hard shoulder [1.50 m wide] and a 1.25 m wide curb for each lane. The Project maximum velocity is 100 km/h.

After evaluating preceding studies and designs of lightweight supports, ESD selected the all-hydraulic and the hydromechanical concepts for detailed design and fabrication. Further analysis and testing showed that the all-hydraulic design was economically justified and met all the crucial engineering, manufacturing, and design criteria identified during the evaluation phase. Following Bureau of Mines approval of the detailed design, four all-hydraulic support models were fabricated. Once functional and structural testing was successfully completed, 40 additional units were constructed and distributed for in-mine testing. The units were very well-liked by all three demonstration mines. The wide- spread interest in supports for seam heights greater than 8 feet led to expansion of the design data package. ESD designed four basic models to cover the new height range, but no hardware has yet been fabricated for the new design.

The proposed classification scheme is based on two primary parameters, one for petrographic composition and the other for rank, both being determined with microscopic techniques. The scheme has been applied to a wide range of Australian coals and found to provide a useful means of relating their inherent properties to properties such as volatile-matter yield, crucible swelling number, and calorific value, which will determine how these coals might be used commercially.
