Introduction The mining of aggregates underground has grown steadily over the last 25 years. Growth has come in both production volume and in the importance this segment of the industry is playing in the continuing supply of construction aggregate. Underground aggregate mines will continue to grow in both number of operations and complexity, as the replacement of zoned reserves in metropolitan areas becomes crucial. This growth will result in a shortage of qualified mine managers, possibly limiting the success of these facilities. The aggregate industry will have to modify current practices in order to meet the growing demand for this specialized skill. Segment Growth Underground mining for aggregates is not a new idea. Martin Marietta has been operating underground mines since 1969, and currently operates 16 underground mines ranging in size from 250,000 tpy to 2,500,000 tpy. These mines represent less than 4% of the total number of operating locations, but contributed 9% of the annual production in 2004. Though they range in size and production capacity, the importance is evident. The 2000 United States Census revealed several trends that are of interest to the aggregate mining industry. For the period 1990-2000 the U.S. population grew by 33 million or 13%. There were nine major metropolitan areas with a population of five million or more. These nine areas accounted for 30% of the total U.S. population. More significant was the fact that the population growth in these nine metro areas was 25% of the growth for the entire country. These statistics tell us that the population is expanding in these major metropolitan areas at a staggering rate. The same thing is happening to some degree in every population center. Population growth increases the demand for local aggregate while reducing the available area to mine that aggregate. The need for an economical supply of aggregate to support community expansion is a problem that will grow as older quarries are mined out and closed. This will be an issue that communities of all sizes will have to deal with. A reliable and cost effective supply of quality aggregate is crucial to support community expansion.

Extracting lunar ice, to be processed into pure water or hydrolyzed into oxygen and hydrogen, faces many challenges. On the Moon icy-regolith deposits that contain up to 10% water are found within Permanently Shadowed Regions (PSR) at both lunar poles, where temperatures approach -220 ⁰C. NASA has identified several technology gaps that exist in developing these resources including: • Excavating large quantities of icy-regolith • Delivering large quantities of acquired resources • Hardware that is lightweight and energy efficient • Hardware that is reliable and durable. NASA uses public challenges to incentivize innovative approaches to closing these gaps. The Break the Ice Lunar Challenge provides over three million dollars in prize money to teams that compete in developing solution to mining the Moon. This paper describes the rules for this challenge and presents some of the proposed solution.

Although rates of pneumoconiosis in coal miners have declined substantially in the United States since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969, new cases continue to occur, including cases of rapidly progressive disease. In contrast, Australia?s underground coal mining industry has reported few new cases of pneumoconiosis for over twenty years. Mortality from Coal Workers? Pneumoconiosis in official health statistics and the prevalence of pneumoconiosis among miners screened in x-ray surveillance programs are also lower in Australia. To understand this disparity, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health was requested by both industry and labor stakeholders to examine this issue, with the ultimate aim of reducing the rate of pneumoconiosis among United States coal miners. A number of factors, including coal dust exposure, silica exposure, and coal rank were examined as potential contributors to the above observed differences. Comparison of coal rank data from each country did not show any significant differences. Air sample data from the coal mining industries in both countries show that coal dust levels in Australian mines are somewhat higher than those reported in similar U.S. mines; however, quartz exposure for Australian miners is lower than for many U.S. miners. Assuming that quartz is contributing to the greater number of cases of advanced pneumoconiosis in the U.S., more effective dust control measures, as well an independent exposure standard for respirable quartz in coal mining, need to be implemented to prevent this potentially disabling condition.

"It is safe to say that the coal industry, in the United States and globally, is currently suffering through one of the hardest times in its history.A perfect storm of competition, changing energy demands, politics and public perceptions have collided, inflicting significant harm to the industry that many say is irreparable. This, in turn, has led to massive job losses in some regions, heavy cuts in production and even bankruptcy filings from two of the largest coal mining companies in the nation.Cheaper natural gas can certainly take a large share of the blame for the struggle of coal, as utility companies switch from coal to natural gas for power generation. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) the amount of coal used for electricity generation in the United States is at a 45-year low.November 2015 marked the fifth consecutive month that natural gas was the leading source of power generation in the United States. EIA said generators produced 101,866 thousand megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity with gas in November versus just 87,789 thousand MWh with coal, the lowest monthly level since May 1980 when monthly coal use was 84,884 thousand MWh.According to Robert Godby, director of the Center for Energy Economics and Public Policy at the University of Wyoming, there are a number of factors playing a role in the decline of coal, but he points to the advances in fracking as the tipping point.“A lot of people will argue that regulation is the cause of the decline, and it has played a part, for sure, but the story of the recent past is more about what competition has done to the energy market,” Godby told Mining Engineering. “The war on coal was originally declared by natural gas in 2008.”The price of natural gas, which was at $13 per million Btu before the gas fracking boom, has fallen to as low as $1.68 in December 2015. Likewise, Godby said the cost of wind generation is now lower than the cost of generation from coal and the cost of solar generation is coming down as well. In addition to that, the demand for energy has changed in the past five years with more efficiencies in everything from building design to lightbulbs."

Lime addition to acid mine drainage waters (AMD), possibly accompanied by aeration, has been the basis for their remediation by precipitation of predominantly metal hydroxides. An efficient novel alternative technique causes precipitation of double M(II)-M(III) hydroxy sulfates which readily precipitate and are easily dewatered. When the Fe(II)/Fe(III) + Al(III) ratio of the AMD is appropriate, the Green Precipitate (GP) Process provides a more effective alternative to normal liming/aeration. The process can be adapted to give a continuous in-line treatment by the choice of suitable computer-controlled reactors designed to improve the liming efficiency, reduce scaling and control the rate of treatment. The processes are described in terms of the chemistry involved.

Copper, nickel, zinc and other ?penalty? metals are found with gold together in nature, and have a similar chemical affinity for cyanide used in leaching operations4. As a result, solutions that come from the heap leach pads contain a significant concentration of penalty metals along with the desired gold. In solution, gold and cyanide form the complex Au(CN)2- that is readily adsorbed onto activated carbon. Penalty metals as individual metal ions also load onto activated carbon and, depending on the concentration of cyanide and the pH of the solution, can form various cyanide complexes. Some of these complexes can also load onto carbon while some are significantly inhibited from loading. Copper, for example, can form the dicyanide complex Cu(CN)2-, the tricyanide complex Cu(CN)32-, and the tetracyanide complex Cu(CN)43-. At a low pH and a low concentration of cyanide, the dicyanide complex predominates. At a higher pH and a higher concentration of cyanide, the tetracyanide complex predominates. Without excess cyanide, however, individual copper ions can remain present. Activated carbon is used in gold extraction because it is highly selective for gold and less so for other metals, such as copper3. However, copper has the ability to adsorb (?load?) onto activated carbon and block the adsorption of gold when it is in the dicyanide form and in a high enough concentration. When copper is in the tetracyanide form, copper loading is significantly inhibited, allowing for the maximum gold recovery. In order to ensure the tetracyanide complex is formed, a combination of both available cyanide and elevated pH must be present. In the South Area of Newmont Mining Corporation?s Gold Quarry mine in Carlin, Nevada, copper and nickel loading becomes a problem when certain acid generating zones of the heap are leached. Copper, nickel, zinc and other penalty metals become leachable and the lower pH uses up more of the cyanide and creates carbon loading conditions for the metals. This decreases the carbon?s ability to extract the gold from solution, decreasing the recovery and increasing the concentration of gold in the barren solution that leaves the carbon columns. In this study, operational data from March through to May of 2007 is presented to show how Newmont developed a quick fix to lower pH and elevated metal concentrations that were causing low gold loadings on activated carbon at their South Area Leach (SAL) heap leach operations. Laboratory tested were also conducted to examine the chemical kinetics of metal loading and the individual effects of increased cyanide concentrations. THEORY Copper I ions form four different complexes with cyanide in solution: the monocyanide species CuCN, the dicyanide species Cu(CN)2-, the tricyanide species Cu(CN)32-, and the tetracyanide species Cu(CN)43-. The species are formed from the following reactions: [Cu)(?+-+ K1 (1) Cu ß2 (2) --+?+23)(3CNCuCNCu ß3 (3) --+?+34)(4CNCuCNCu ß4 (4) ] where K1 equals 1019.50, ß2 equals 1024.03, ß3 equals 1028.65, and ß4 equals 1030.35. Along with these complexing reactions, hydrogen cyanide and water also dissociate in solution, as per the following reactions: [H?+-+ KH (5) OHOHH2?+-+ KW (6)] where KH has a value of 109.24 and KW has a 1014 value2. These six chemical equations compete with each other, with domination of one over the others dependent on the CN- and H+ concentrations. Each complex also has different properties when it comes to its loading behavior on activated carbon. The dicyanide copper complex and the monocyanide copper complex have an affinity for adsorption onto activated carbon that is greater than the affinity of gold cyanide for adsorption. They also have a lower solubility in water, which enhances adsorption. The tricyanide copper complex and the tetracyanide copper complex are water soluble and have an affinity for loading adsorption on activated carbon that is less than the affinity of gold cyanide for loading adsorption1. There are three prime reasons for this phenomenon. First, the extra cyanides mask the metal ion more, which blocks the main adsorption characteristic of the complex. Second, the complexes are also larger, making it harder to physically fit into the active sites on the carbon. This helps make the latter two complexes kinetically inhibited from adsorption, freeing carbon active site to load with gold cyanide complexes. Third, it is also important to consider the expressions of the mass and charge balance. These balances describe all the overall concentration of copper and cyanide in solution, as well as marking overall charges of the ions in solution4. This is important because significantly changing the charge from positive/neutral to more negative is another reason for activated carbon to reject adsorbing the higher cyanide complexes. The speciation of copper and other penalty metal cyanide complexes in solution is dependent on the pH. At lower pH values, increased hydrogen ions (H+) can out-compete metals for cyanide ions. Lower free cyanide in the system leads to the lower cyanide species of copper cyanide predominating, with a noticeable concentration of the free metal, monocyanide and dicyanide species of copper cyanide. At higher pH values, hydrogen ions are significantly reduced, reducing the kinetics of HCN formation. More free cyanide remains in the system, allowing for more complexing. With this higher amount of cyanide in the system, the tetracyanide species of copper cyanide predominates, also with a noticeable concentration of the tricyanide species of copper cyanide. Grouting is mainly used to improve mechanical properties or decrease the permeability of rock mass around civil and mining projects. The purpose of this paper is to present the most effective factors on grout penetration depth in rock mass. Such factors are essential for reliable estimation of the grout penetration depth and the expense for cement take of any grouting project. In this paper, about 50 different types of the relations presented so far by various researchers to estimate the depth of penetration in fractured rock were studied. The effective factors are classified to rock mass properties, grout properties, and operational factors. Results show that firstly, the discontinuities aperture and Lugeon value are respectively the most investigated factors of rock mass properties influencing on penetration depth. Secondly, the yielding stress, viscosity, and density of grout are the most effective factors of grout properties. Finally, grouting pressure has an intense effect among other operational factors. "The mission of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Minerals Information Center (NMIC) is to collect, analyze and disseminate information on the domestic and international supply of and demand for minerals and mineral materials essential to the U.S. economy and national security. Understanding mineral exploration activities and trends assists government policy makers, minerals industry decision makers and research entities in identifying where future sources of mineral supply are likely to be discovered, the amount and type of these resources and factors that may affect exploration and development.This review summarizes significant exploration trends related to active sites and budgets, mineral commodities and regional factors for the years 2001-2015. Data were compiled by specialists in the USGS-NMIC, and reported annually in the USGS-NMIC Minerals Yearbook series and in the May issue of Mining Engineering magazine. External data for these analyses were derived from industry sources, published literature, and SNL Metals & Mining, an offering of S&P Global Market Intelligence (New York, NY).The USGS-NMIC compiled exploration site data for more than 80 mineral commodities, focusing on base metals, diamond and precious metals. More than $138 billion constant U.S. dollars were budgeted by the minerals industry from 2001 through 2015 to explore more than 16,000 mineral deposits globally (SNL Metals & Mining, 2016a). Annual analyses identified where mineral exploration took place by principal commodity target, ranked the magnitude of activity in each region, identified the factors that most affected changes in exploration activity and highlighted developments that led to changes in global supply or increased diversity of supply to the United States. Geographic classifications noted in this report were Africa, Australia, Canada, China, Latin America, Pacific, Russia, United States and Rest of the World."

This paper presents an evaluation of tailings dam incidents from the 1994 USCOLD Tailings Dam Committee report. Comparisons are also made with water storage dam incidents from USCOLD reports and recent tailings dam incidents. The evaluation results show that tailings dam incidents are due to a number of factors including overtopping, static and seismic instability, seepage and internal erosion, and foundation conditions, and that no particular type of tailings dam or operational condition is more susceptible to incidents. In addition, the results confirm that tailings dams should be located, designed, operated, and reclaimed with a thorough knowledge of site conditions, mill operation, site monitoring, and tailings characteristics.

Exiting WW2, the potential of nitrates and hydrogen peroxide for application as industrial explosives both became known. The technology stream advanced the development and uptake of nitrate-based explosives to the point that they are the current global standard for blasting. Recently environmental issues are influencing the strategic agenda of extractive industries. The mid-2010s saw renewed interest in hydrogen peroxide explosives to eliminate NOx fume. Carbon reduction initiatives in the 2020s provided additional impetus to investigate hydrogen peroxide-based explosives. Hypex Bio is at the forefront of developing and delivering bulk gas sensitized Hydrogen Peroxide Emulsion (HPE) for blasting. HPE consists of hydrogen peroxide along with smaller amounts of fuel and emulsifier. The consistency of HPE is similar to industry- standard nitrate-based emulsions. It is compatible with existing priming and initiation systems. HPE does not contain nitrates and thereby does not produce post blast nitrous oxide fumes nor discharge of nitrates or ammonia to mine water. Importantly, HPE contributes to reduction in total carbon emissions as compared to nitrate-based explosives.

An overview of the evolution of computerized mine planning and design has been given, emphasizing the need for a knowledge-based system for planning and design of underground coal mines. An outline for the development methodology and procedure has been provided. Problem structuring guidelines have been used to incorporate intelligence and integration to the design modules. A skeletal model for a mine planning and design expert system has been prescribed, and the development process has been documented in detail. A feasibility prototype has been developed to test the structure of the skeletal model and to ensure completeness of the design process. The feasibility prototype development and its contribution toward proto typing has been addressed in this paper. At present, prototype development is underway. The prototype is expected to be avail-able for testing and implementation in early 1991.

Rhenium is primarily recovered as a by-product from molybdenum roasting circuits. However, rhenium is also present in copper heap leach solutions at very low concentrations and represents a potential new rhenium source. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold has developed a new process using carbon adsorption followed by ion exchange or solvent extraction to concentrate rhenium from less than 1 ppm to 15 g/L. The product is compatible as a feed to an existing rhenium processing plant. A pilot plant operated at Freeport-McMoRan?s Sierrita mine has demonstrated the technical and financial feasibility of this new process.

The Blair Athol Coal Mine (BAC) is a large open cut operation in the Bowen Basin of Queensland, Australia. Current mine capacity is about 11 million tonnes per annum(Mtpa) of export coal. On-line analysis at BAC consists of two Coalscan 9500s installed directly on the output of the crusher plant and immediately before the product stockpiles, while a third Coalscan 9500 is installed on the transfer conveyor feeding the train loading bin. The two product Coalscans have a dual purpose. The first is to provide real time coal quality data directly back to the mining operations. The second is that of modeling the product stockpile with accurate on-line information. This modeling enables both production and coal quality personnel to accurately examine the coal quality of each stockpile with a degree of resolution which previously had never been achieved.

Viscosities of industrial lead slags with various compositions were measured as a function of temperature using a Brookfield viscometer. Based on the experimental data from this study and other investigations reported in the literature, an expression has been developed to correlate the viscosities of lead silicate slags as functions of composition and temperature. The effect of each individual slag component on the variation of the slag viscosity is identified. The composition dependency of viscosity of lead silicate slags is discussed. The calculated results using this viscosity expression are in good agreement with the measured data.

Introduction Syncrude Canada Ltd. is the operating company for a consortium of industry and government participants that produce synthetic crude oil from their leases in the Athabasca Oil Sands. Production from the $2.3 billion (1978) integrated mining, extraction, and bitumen upgrading and utility complex started in September 1978. Production is currently about 6.4 Mm3/a (40 million bbl per year) of high quality synthetic crude oil. This is done by upgrading the extracted bitumen from the oil sands mined. Plans are to increase the production to 8 Mm3/a (50 million bbl pier year) by 1989. At that time, the mining operation will be required to deliver 100 Mt/a (110 million stpy) of oil sand (ore) to the extraction plants, and handle quantities of waste ranging from 50 to 75 Mt/a (55 to 83 million stpy). The Syncrude plant is located at Mildred Lake, 40 km (25 miles) north of Fort McMurray and 480 km (300 miles) north of Edmonton, Alberta. Climate, particularly winter, is therefore a major factor affecting the design and operation of all the Syncrude production facilities. Bitumen production, consisting of overburden removal, oil/sand mining, bitumen extraction, and tailings disposal, account for about half the total SCO production costs. Considerable research and development, therefore, continues to be applied to improve both material handling and bitumen recovery methods. Potential applications for feeder breakers were identified in the material handling aspects of both overburden and oil sand mining to reduce cost and to attain planned production increments. Overburden removal Overburden materials on the leases comprise thin Pleistocene sands, gravel and fill, and sands, silts and clays of the thicker Clearwater Formation with the silt to clay components predominating. The latter contains multiple leases of hard siltstone with unconfined compressive strengths up to 148 MPa and thicknesses up 0.1 to 0.9 m (1 to 3ft). Characteristics of the overburden as well as the climatic environment and scale of operation present unique problems for the efficient removal of the material. In a bucketwheel/conveyor system, the weak silty clay formations require relatively flat working slopes for safe operation, while the siltstone lenses and frozen overburden require blasting or selective removal by other equipment. These factors, combined with the normal bucketwheel/conveyor design parameters, lead to high capital investment and relatively inefficient use of that capital. The 17th Annual Mining Hall of Fame Induction banquet will begin with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The five inductees are Georgius Agricola, David William Brunton, Herbert E. Goodman, David Ray Mitchell and Robert Peele. Georgius Agricola (1494-1555) wrote De ReMetallica, an original and valuable work that discussed everything known about mining during the first half of the 16th century. DSI DYWI Rock Dust application is aiding in enhancing safety and productivity in underground coal mining. DSI DYWI Rock Dust combines wet dusting technology and polymers to allow for drying and lift characteristics for rock dusting. DSI DYWI Rock Dust typically dries within 24 to 48 hours depending upon the mine air velocity and humidity. The DSI DYWI Rock Dust Applicator Machine is a completely hydraulic unit. The DSI DYWI Rock Dust Applicator machine allows for batching of product and face spraying operations in permissible locations. The DSI DYWI Rock Dusting Applicator Machine fits in one half of a battery or diesel scoop bucket for ease of transport. It is completely hydraulically powered by the PTO circuit. The DSI DYWI Rock Dust Applicator unit requires a scoop operator, and a person to operate the spray wand, simple operation with two personnel. The first demonstration was at an underground continuous miner room and pillar coal mine which produced a pilot test period opportunity, which proved to be successful, and has now been in full launch mode with the US underground coal mining industry. A typical batch of operation allows for 250? of roof and rib (19? wide by 6? in height) coverage of DSI DYWI Rock Dust application. The DSI DYWI Rock Dust Applicator contains a hydraulic powered air compressor which allows for 30-50% more coverage per batch by improved dispersion of product via air assist spray nozzle. DSI DYWI Rock Dust will add approximately $0.02 to $0.04 per clean ton of coal cost to the mining operation over traditional rock dust cost depending upon mining height.

To reduce concentrate dewatering and drying costs, the Concentrator Division at Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc. investigated available filtration technologies. Numerous methods were explored, including: drum, disk, belt, pressure, hyperbaric, and ceramic media filtration. An economic evaluation of the individual filtration technologies indicated the advantages of ceramic media filtration for Morenci concentrates. This paper discusses the technological development culminating in the first full scale application of ceramic media disk filters in North America. Low moisture contents are obtained at high production rates and greatly reduced operating costs.

The paper investigates the effects of calcination for thermal activation and intensive milling for mechanical activation on aluminum recovery by acid leaching of pyrophyllite ore enriched via attrition scrubbing and froth flotation. The study compares these methods in terms of energy consumption and aluminum recovery, concluding that mechanical activation is more economical and environmentally friendly.

Blasor is a new mine planning tool which is being used in the long and medium-term optimization of multi-open-pit operations throughout BHP Billiton’s Base Metals and bulk commodities portfolio. It is not just a scheduler, nor even only a schedule optimizer—although this function lies at the heart of the tool’s functionality—but a pit development plan optimizer, used from ultimate pit design and process plant capacity sizing right through to mining phase design and optimal panel scheduling. The tool uses a mixed-integer-linear-programming optimization engine to determine when material should be excavated and where it should be sent to optimize discounted operating cash flow over the life of operation. The core software design concept of Blasor is to provide a tool which is intuitive and flexible enough so that a competent mine planner can perform a pit development plan optimization without assistance from optimization specialists. To this end, a generalized graphical user interface has been implemented which allows full configuration of the optimization problem, including the definition of all inputs and constraints, specification of the material flow topology, bin and destination class definitions and full specification of the economic model encompassing prices and costs. This paper describes the capability of Blasor and outlines the design concepts underlying its design philosophy.
