An accepted statement of fact is that, next to agriculture, transportation is the second most important industry in the world. The transportation networks of the United States have greatly contributed to our nation's growth and prosperity. The objective here is to make the reader aware of the need for communication between geologists, mining engineers, purchasing agents, and transportation managers. Only through a cooperative effort is it possible to reap the benefits of transportation in the industrial minerals field. Transportation is often thought of in terms of trucks, rail cars, barges, and covered wagons. There is much more. Corning Inc. Corning Glass Works is a worldwide organization with more than $2 billion in annual sales. It supplies more than 60,000 different products a year to some 47,000 customer firms and millions of individual consumers. Corning operates 32 of its own plants worldwide and is also an investor with a 50-50 or minority position in 24 affiliated companies in 11 countries. Corning competes in four broad business categories: • specialty glass and ceramics; • consumer housewares; • laboratory sciences; and • telecommunications Binding these four sectors together is the glue of technology. Coming's research laboratory, established in 1908, was one of the first in American industry. That early commitment to research has never wavered. Today, Corning spends annually on research and devel¬opment, as a percentage of sales, at double the average rate for all manufacturing industry in the US. Some 1500 scientists, engineers, and support personnel are now employed at the company's research and development centers in the US, Japan, and France. Petalite background A family of materials melted conventionally as a glass, then converted by special processing to a ceramic was invented in 1957. One of the basic minerals in this glass ceramic product is petalite. Petalite is a monoclinic mineral with a framework silicate structure and a low iron content, about 0.06% Fe2O3. Petalite is found in very few places throughout the world and no commercial petalite deposit has been found in the United States. Sizable deposits occur in Zimbabwe, Southwest Africa, Brazil, Australia, the Soviet Union, and Sweden. Coming's purchasing and geology departments located a source of petalite with proven reserves in what was then known as Rhodesia. The supplier was Bikita Minerals. The relationship with Bikita was one in which Bikita supplied bulk ore that Corning processed into a finished material at its US facility. This bulk ore method of shipment resulted in high losses through contamination and processing. It also caused tank upsets at the Corning plant because of iron contamination picked up through the numerous handlings of this product in bulk. The relationship with Bikita continued until 1965 when the white political leadership of Rhodesia declared its independence from Great Britain. This led to the imposition of international sanctions. The sanctions were lifted in 1980 and the relationship with Bikita was reestablished in 1983.

We are no longer short of viable Rare Earth deposits. As little as 2 years ago China mined and produced 97% ofthe world?s rare earths. Only a few deposits were in an advanced stage of exploration and development. Now Technical Metals Research (TMR) Gareth Hatch *5 reports that 347 deposits are being developed by 265 companies down from 440 on July 6th. Their Index of Advanced projects lists 45 projects in 14 countries. They will sustain the world for centuries to come and many good deposits are yet to be found. The problem is mining 14 elements in balance. Each of the deposits listing production in the chart has a unique set of minerals which they think will give them a cost advantage. Which of these will make it to production is a question. Most of the Advanced won?t be mined soon, but which ones? China is still in the driver?s seat in Light Rare Earth production (LREO) with one deposit with 35 million ton Baiyunebo deposit in Inner Mongolia which is part of a working iron ore deposit. The number of HREE deposits have been reduced and they attempting to eliminate unpermitted mines. This report will tell you what a Rare Earth is, how rare they are, why they are important, and where they are being developed which includes Australia, the United States, Africa, Greenland, Brazil and Canada.

Kenny/Shea JV is constructing the water intake tunnel for the new Elm Road Generating Station, a supercritical coal-fired power plant in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, being built by Bechtel Power Corporation. The intake tunnel system consists of a temporary mining shaft, pump house and intake channel riser shafts, and four lakebed intake shafts. An 8.33 m diameter, 2,800 m long TBM mined rock tunnel is being constructed to connect the shafts. The intakes are located 2.4 kilometers offshore in Lake Michigan. The shafts and tunnel are being constructed in glacial tills and Silurian Dolomite. The estimated tunnel completion is December 2007.

This paper summarizes the results of the rock mechanics monitoring program performed as part of Old Ben Coal Company's longwall coal mining demonstration project conducted in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines. The work described herein included installation of instruments, collection of data and data analysis performed during mining of the first longwall panel in Mine No. 24. The rock mechanics monitoring program included both surface and underground instrumentation and was designed to achieve the following purposes: 1 -To provide the capability to observe unusual situations during mining so that remedial measures could be instituted quickly 2 -To formulate design guidelines for future longwall mining efforts; 3 -To evaluate surface subsidence, and its character, rate and potential effects on cultural features, and to develop criteria to assist in predicting subsidence for other mines having similar roof conditions. Six previous attempts with longwall methods in Old Ben Coal Company's Hine 21 had been unsuccessful due to roof control problems. A description of these attempts is given by Moroni (1973). Introduction Froth flotation is one of the most common unit engineering operations in use today. Its aim is to upgrade the quality of coal by removing ash/pyrite and separating selected minerals from undesired gangue materials. Flotation has been successfully practiced at the industrial scale for more than 50 years. Its use is increasing due to the ever decreasing feed grades of the coals and minerals being processed. Flotation has also shown itself to be a flexible process that lends itself well to many solid/solid separations. Thus, with surprisingly little equipment modification, separations can involve very different particle sizes and densities, and relative weight ratios of materials to be separated. In addition, the flotation process is economic, especially when compared to size reduction, its associated precursor process. Flotation also lends itself to continuous operations with a given equipment configuration. The operation must exhibit an ability to vary feed rate of solid to the process by as much as 50% without a total collapse of separating efficiency. In addition, the mechanical flotation cell is scaleable from 2.8 to 57 or 85 m3 (100 to 2000 or 3000 cu ft) with surprising ease relative to other unit engineering operations over the same relative size increase. The separating medium used is water. Most of the chemicals required - pH regulators, frothers, collectors, activators, and depressants - are all relatively inexpensive and common. They are not usually used in large quantities. Froth flotation is certainly one of the most versatile and forgiving unit operations in the chemical, mining, and agricultural industries. The problem with the industrial flotation process is that it is fairly easy to get reasonable results and relatively difficult to get excellent results. Why is it so difficult to fine tune the froth flotation process? There are some obvious reasons and a few not-so-obvious factors. The obvious category would certainly contain the tendency of natural feed materials (ores and raw coals) to have variable physical, metallurgical, and surface properties. This occurs even when special care is taken to minimize such differences with blending. There is another obvious reason for difficulty. An inherent broadness of the feed particle size range to flotation results from using any of the common industrial-scalefine grinding devices - ball-, rod-, or autogenous mills. Research has been done into the chemical reagent and equipment aspects of flotation. It has shown strong interactions (limitations) of chemical reagents and equipment on larger and smaller particles. The point is that current flotation practice works best on average- or medium-sized feed particles. The greater the amount of large or small particles, or of both large and small, the more difficult it is to achieve excellent flotation results. Other reasonably obvious factors include: • variations in mineral type and liberation sizes; • water chemistry variations such as those involving Ca", C03, or Fe", or various soluble metal cations; • the presence of stray organic materials such as returning soluble reagents or partially degraded reagents in reuse water; • the lack of reliable on-line instrumentation for monitoring and control; • frequent equipment malfunctions of all types; • excessive feed rates for installed plant capacity; • poor operator interaction with the process; and • poor reagent dosage control. There are less obvious, but real limitations to flotation. These are inherent in the design and operating characteristics of the most common cell design in use today - the mechanical flotation cell. Individual performance attributes of the chemical reagents used, along with their manner of use, also carry limitations. The bulk of this paper will deal with chemical reagents and their use. Chemical reagents In 1979, the author and his co-workers were asked to invent and implement, at the industrial scale, new flotation reagent chemistry. After reviewing some of the literature (Sutherland and Wark, 1955; Klassen and Mokrousov, 1959; M. Fuerstenau, 1962; D. Fuerstenau, 1976; and Leja, 1982), a series of carefully controlled plant scale tests were set up. These tests were designed to understand existing reagent scale-up from the laboratory to the plant. They were to quantify at the plant level the effect of some of the more important, controllable chemical reagent factors (frother and collector type, frother and collector dosage, pH effects). The MineSight Schedule Optimizer (MSSO) is a new production scheduling tool developed by Mintec, Inc. using mixed integer linear programming (MILP) techniques. This tool was developed to solve the short- and medium-term schedule problems for surface and underground mining operations that involve multiple mining areas, multiple processes, multiple destinations and blending requirements. MSSO finds the optimum schedule in each period that achieves the objective while satisfying comprehensive product quality and quantity requirements as well as physical and technical constraints. Using the MineSight Planning Database (MSPD) as a central data hub, MSSO seamlessly works with MineSight 3-D (MS3D) block models and third-party data, MineSight Interactive Planner (MSIP), MineSight Haulage (MSHaulage) and MineSight Activity Planner (MSAP) to prepare data, formulate MILP models, calculate, report, fine-tune, save and visualize schedules. This paper presents the features and capabilities of MSSO. A case study is also given to demonstrate the applications of this new tool.

In 2006 McNally International Inc. in a Joint Venture partnership with Aecon Constructors was the successful bidder on two York Region Tunnel Projects: Bathurst Collector/Langstaff Trunk Sewers; and YDSS Interceptor Sewer 19th Avenue Project. These projects comprise a total of 13 kilometres of 2.74 meter finished diameter tunnels and are both part of the York Durham Sewer System (YDSS). Both contracts require the use of EPB tunnel boring machines with a precast concrete segmental liner. The following provides an overview the two projects.

"Risk quantification may be used as a sustainable development index in the mining industry, since it encompasses both economic and social factors. In addition, it may assist in the development of a framework, which is also indirectly related to sustainable development, to prevent accidents and improve health and safety standards. However, risk quantification in the mineral sector involves diverse activities and is considered a very difficult task. Although statistical data report accident severity rates, incident rates and accident frequency rates, none of these allow for accurate risk calculations. In this paper, two risk calculation formulas, which may be used to quantify risk, as well as to identify hazardous activities in a workplace, are proposed. Numerical examples are given based on statistical data available through the MSHA database. Also a combination of a decision/fault/event tree that allows risk quantification is presented."

In 2004, the engineers at the Deer Creek Mine located near Huntington, Utah initiated the ventilation planning to exploit a remote area of the mine?s reserves. This area was located under a mountain which would not allow for the incorporation of an additional shaft or portal access near the proposed longwall panels. With this constraint along with the desire to maintain a two entry gate road system and the expected condition of frequent coal wash outs a ventilation plan was established. Different options were examined that included; increasing the current exhaust fan power, adding another exhaust fan installation, converting the ventilation fans in the active portion of the mine to a forcing system, and modifying the ventilation system in the active area of the mine to a push-pull system. The push-pull ventilation system was ultimately selected. This paper details the design process of the ventilation system upgrade, the procurement process for the new fans, and the new fan startup testing.

Until a few years ago tunnel construction was based exclusively on experience. In recent years, however, numerical models have increasingly become an integrated part of tunnel design [2]. These models permit good evaluation of the tunnel's support behavior even before it is designed. In particular, numerical methods are highly suited for the development of new construction methods. The prerequisite for this is the application of high-performance pre- and postprocessors, permitting the design engineer to come to a quick interpretation of the analysis results. In future, 3D analysis will take on increasing significance, for which reason this paper also deals with this type of models.

Acid production or acid drainage is a major environmental issue that also has negative implications on the aquifer system surrounding the mine tailings area. The approach to controlling acid mine drainage involves physical and geochemical characterization that affect acid production. The material permeability determines the availability of oxygen, which is paramount in acid production in coal rejects, and varies with depth. In this paper the author presents the variation in oxidized pyrite/acid production with depth in black coal mine washery wastes. Chemical kinetic parameters and the diffusive parameters have been used to obtain the variation in oxygen content and the oxidized pyrite content with respect to the depth and time. Its dependence on porosity and moisture content is illustrated.

INTRODUCTION Measurement of certain data associated with nuclear testing necessitates the reception of waves at the instrument location which are unaffected by reflection off internal structures or tunnel surfaces. Therefore, in order to provide necessary facilities for the fielding of experiments in support of the underground nuclear testing program, the Defense Nuclear Agency (DNA) commissioned a cost and feasibility evaluation pertaining to the design and construction of large underground cavities in Rainier Mesa. The effort included research into past experience pertaining to the excavation and support of large underground caverns, assessment of the geological conditions which exist in Rainier Mesa, preliminary design of the chambers and their rock support systems based upon the geological setting, development of mining plans for the excavation of the caverns, and estimation of the cost and manpower schedule to complete construction. This paper summarizes the results of the feasibility evaluation. The investigation was limited to modified hemispherical configurations ranging in size from 24.4 to 91.4 m (80 to 300 ft) in diameter. Two cavity support systems were considered. The first employs internally installed rockbolts as the means of primary rock support while the second involves the use of annular tendon galleries located above the chambers from which primary support members are introduced prior to general excavation. The internal support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 24.4, 36.6, 48.8, and 54.9 m (80, 120, 160, and 180 ft) while the external support configuration was considered for cavities with spans of 54.9, 73.2, and 91.4 m (180, 240 and 300 ft).

Environmental self-monitoring is one of the advanced approaches for industrial sustainability programs. Organization for Economy Cooperation and Development (OECD) defines self-monitoring as ?the system of organizational and technical measures put in place and financed by [the] regulated subject? in order to ensure their compliance with regulatory requirements?1. Self-monitoring is beneficial for industrial operators, communities, and governments. Industrial companies use self-monitoring as a central element of their compliance management that allows them to fulfill their duties, obligations, and to avoid citations. When industries control their emissions and ensure workers are not exposed above the regulated limits, communities are better. It is impossible for an EPA, OSHA, or MSHA inspectors to be close to every emission source or workplace full-time. It is much more effective for industries to self-monitor, under due supervision. Occupational conditions are a very important part of industry and health and safety self-monitoring should be highly prioritized. In this paper we will research the regulatory basis and best practice of occupational self-monitoring. We will show that not only is self-monitoring a vital element of an occupational health & safety management system, but that you need a management system for affective monitoring.

As part of a purchase of a fleet of Caterpillar 785 trucks, Round Mountain Gold Corp., Cashman Equipment Co. and Caterpillar Inc. entered into a four-year contract for the major maintenance of the fleet of trucks. This contract includes fixed costs and guaranteed availability. The results have been excellent, and the fleet of trucks performs well. History The Smoky Valley Common Operation is a unique mine. Through a mixture of diligence and foresight, it has become the largest open-pit, heap leaching gold mine in the world. This was no small feat considering the remote area surrounding the mine. Round Mountain is located in north-central Nye County, NV. To the east of the town and mine lies the Central Toquima mountain range. To the west is the Toiyabe mountain range. Between them is the Big Smoky Valley, a flat expanse of sagebrush, salt grass and fine dirt.

The ability of wireless systems—e.g., voice communication, proximity detection, tele-remote operation, telemetry, etc.—to function satisfactorily (coexist) in the presence of other wireless systems is critical to the safety and health of mine workers. The failure of wireless systems to coexist could result in the delay, corruption, or outright loss, of critical data, voice, or video information. However, no mining-sector-specific regulations, standards, or guidelines exist to ensure the safe coexistence of wireless systems. This paper introduces the concept of wireless coexistence, implications in the mining industry, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) research approach to develop guidelines and recommendations to ensure safe wireless coexistence.

OHSAS 18001 is a series of international standards for occupational health and safety management. It is comprised of two parts, 18001 and 180029. OHSAS 18001 was formulated by international certifying bodies and is based on BS8800 and was first published in 19996,11. OHSAS 18001 was developed to be compatible with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 in order to facilitate integration of quality, environment, and occupational health and safety management systems5. It is a voluntary standard and the overall aim of OHSAS 18001 is to enable organizations to control their occupational health and safety (OH&S) risks and improve overall health and safety performance5. OHSAS 18001 is widely accepted in the UK, Europe, and Asia, is gaining momentum in North and South America, and it was used as the basis and conforms to the requirements of ANSI/AIHA Z.10-2005: American National Standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. It defines a set of requirements for an occupational health and safety management system suitable for any kind and size of organization4. Businesses of all sizes are developing and implementing occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS) that are in compliance with the OHSAS 18001 standard.

The vast majority of U.S. coal preparation plants utilize screen-bowl centrifuges to dewater their fine clean coal products. In light of this popularity, researchers at Virginia Tech have engaged in a variety of laboratory and industrial field test programs to develop technological enhancements that have the potential to further improve the performance of this important solid-liquid separation process. These enhancements, which include simple design modifications and new reagent packages, have been shown to significantly improve solids recovery and reduce product moisture in several experimental trials.

The 2,408 meter (7,900-foot) long Middle Rouge Parkway Interceptor Extension varies in size from 1.52-meter (5-foot) to 2.36 meter (7-foot 9-inch) inside diameter. Most of the sewer was constructed in tunnel through fine sands and silts. Piping of these soils through the concrete liner eventually resulted in a loss of soil support, settlement and/or severe distress of the sewer, and the formation of several sinkholes. The repair and restoration was generally performed in the sewer and included cast-in-place concrete, shotcrete, cured in place pipe, soil stabilization, cement grouting, dewatering, and chemical grouting. As a part of the work, temporary pump stations and flow diversions were required to perform the work while minimizing discharges to the adjacent Rouge River.

The U.S. cement industry, including Puerto Rico, again set a record in terms of production and shipments. The increase in shipments came primarily from imports of portland cement as domestic production from produced and imported clinker gained only 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 88.6 Mt (97.6 million st), an increase of 1 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker, estimated at 93.5 Mt (103 million st), was up 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Masonry cement shipments of 5.5 Mt (6 million st), which equates closely to production, was up 6.3 percent. Blended ce-ment shipments were up 35.9 percent from 2004 at 2.35 Mt (2.6 million st).
