The spatial distribution of copper grades at the Mansa Mina project is highly variable due to the presence of high grade copper/silver/arsenic breccia bodies. Copper grades within the breccia bodies tend to average about 4.5% copper while grades in the surrounding stockwork average about 1.0%. The breccia is known to occur in the vicinity of significant controlling structures, however, the outline and therefore the thickness of the bodies are far from regular. Due to the high grade of these bodies a significant proportion of the value of the project is derived from the breccia tonnages. The irregularity in the outlines/thickness translates into an uncertainty in the breccia tonnage and therefore in the value of the project. Acknowledging the economic importance of the breccia bodies and the risk associated with the breccia tonnage uncertainty, significant additional drilling has been proposed to both understand the spatial distribution of the breccias and reduce project risk. The costs associated with this additional drilling are not inconsequential; thus, a reasonable question is ‘what value is derived from this additional drilling’? To obtain an answer to this important question, a simulation approach is applied. First the deposit is simulated using the existing drilling and the uncertainty in the resource is defined. Next the proposed drilling program is simulated and the simulated data are added to the existing data. Using this expanded data set a second simulation of the deposit is created and once again the uncertainty in the resource is defined. Using this approach, the reduction in the uncertainty in the resource can be determined. To convert this reduction in uncertainty (or reduction in risk) in the stated resource into a dollar value, a method of defining the increase in the project rate of return necessary to account for risk is presented. Using the two different rates of return, the difference in project NPV and hence the value of additional drilling is determined.

This paper analyses the impact of the uncertainty associated with the input parameters in a mine planning optimization model. A real example was considered to aid in the building of a mathematical model that represents the coal production process with reference to the mining, processing, and marketing of coal. This model was optimized using the linear programming concept whereby the best solution was perturbed by the stochastic behaviuor of one of the main parameters involved in the production process. The analysis of the results obtained permitted an evaluation of the risk associated with the best solution due to the uncertainty in the input parameters.

This publication records the proceedings of the Tenth International Ferroalloys Congress, INFACON X, and the third INFACON hosted in South Africa. The Proceedings of the previous two South African congresses in 1974 and 1992 serve, as this volume does, as a valuable record of the papers presented at these important events. This publication comes at a time in South Africa?s democratic development where the theme ?Transformation Through Technology? is very appropriate. The ferroalloy industry has played an increasingly significant role in transformation and black economic empowerment in South Africa, particularly through the advancement and sharing of technology. INFACON X plays an important role in this process, and the stakeholders and organisers of this Congress are thankful for the opportunity to hold this event at this time of transformation in our country. The world of ferroalloys, as well as that of the steel and stainless steel industries, has continued to change rapidly. Recent innovations, better use of resources, increased awareness of environmental issues and ongoing efforts to improve occupational health and safety are among the topics addressed at INFACON X and in these Proceedings. The theme of ?Transformation Through Technology? has been chosen to reflect the regional and global developments in the ferroalloy industry, and the crucial role that technology plays. The Proceedings of INFACON X, the first Congress in Southern Africa of the new millenium, represent a milestone in the technical developments in this major global industry. It contains almost eighty papers in twenty Sessions, from authors in twenty countries, covering raw materials, reductants, energy, electrodes, refractories, furnace design, post taphole services, modelling, simulation, control, sensors, fundamental issues and the applications of ferroalloys as related topics. The major ferroalloys, namely ferrochromium and ferromanganese, are covered extensively in many interesting papers. This comes as no surprise, since South Africa is the leading producer of ferrochromium and also plays a major role in the supply of manganese ore and alloys. Papers on ferronickel, silicon and ferrosilicon ensure that all the large-volume ferroalloys are addressed. These Proceedings of refereed papers of high quality will serve the ferroalloy industry for many years to come, as has been the case with previous INFACON events. For the first time in the history of INFACON, the Proceedings will be available both in bound and in a searchable electronic CD-ROM format. We appreciate the time and effort that the authors and referees have devoted to making this publication a really valuable document. Their contributions are recorded for posterity and reflect the advancements they and their colleagues have made to benefit the ferroalloy industry. Without these ongoing improvements, the industry would stagnate and not fulfil its role in the advancement of mankind. All papers included in these Proceedings were peer-reviewed by at least two referees. About 130 referees were sourced internationally to fulfill this function, and their valuable technical and editing inputs are gratefully acknowledged. Finally, I would like to thank the Technical Programme and Publication committees, led by Dr. Lloyd Nelson and Dr. Noël Machingawuta respectively. Without the tireless efforts of these individuals and their Committee members, the technical programme and these Proceedings would not have been the success they certainly are.

"What affects and influences one’s perspective of the mining and metallurgical industries?One’s perspective of the industry we work in changes over time as a function of our experience as well as from the interaction we have with colleagues locally and probably even more so with those internationally. Furthermore, the ever-changing environment continues to impact the context in which one sees things. Living mostly in South Africa through its changes in the past fi fty years but also having the opportunity to travel extensively and work on projects abroad adds an invaluable richness to this more global perspective. One of the greatest challenges is how best to use this experience to endeavour to support the many potential opportunities in southern as well as sub-Saharan Africa. However, one has also to face the realities of how the best interests of the country and its peoples are sadly often not well served for various unfortunate reasons. Investment, education, regional stability, and good governance are some of the most critical considerations for the prosperity and survival of the region.The mining and metallurgical industry in southern and sub-Saharan Africa changed significantly during the post-colonial and apartheid eras as a result of global and regional developments that have impacted the ownership of businesses, the technologies used, and products produced in a manner that was not envisaged even fi fty years ago. Southern Africa’s mining and metallurgical industry has progressed from one based mostly on diamonds and gold in the late 19th century to a much more diverse one that involves the production of a variety of other precious, base, and ferrous metals and minerals as well as coal and industrial minerals. The infrastructure and manufacturing capacity was largely developed to meet the needs of this industry during its growth phases, but even though the dynamics have changed there is still a need for more efficient and effective support systems in the region."

Titanium bearing resources can selectively be chlorinated at temperatures below 200°C if the Ti02 in the feed is nitrided before chlorination. However, the nitriding reaction is highly endothermic, requires highly reducing conditions, is only thermodynamically favourable at elevated temperatures, and is affected by mass and heat transfer restrictions. At the required processing conditions, problems might also be experienced with sintering and with melting of slag forming components in the raw materials. A test programme was undertaken to study the effects of raw material type, temperature, gas composition, bed depth, carbon to raw material ratio and residence time in order to simulate conditions required for scaling up a nitriding process. In contrast to previous experience with low-grade titanium-bearing slag containing about 30% Ti02, ilmenite and chlorinateable slag do not form melting phases under the studied nitriding conditions and hardly sintered at all. Both feed materials can readily be nitrided with conversions in excess of 90% at temperatures around 1300°C and using bituminous coal as reducing agent with fixed carbon in excess of 1.1 times the stoichiometric requirement. The conversion decreases as the bed depth of the feed material increases and the N2/CO ratio in the gas decreases. Analysis of the relative rates of mass and heat transfer into the reacting beds of ilmenite and slag showed that the heat transfer rates are more limiting than the mass transfer rates. In order to increase the throughput that can be achieved in a kiln, it would be necessary to take special measures to enhance the heat transfer rates into the mass of reacting material. One such a measure is to pre-form the mass of reacting material into thin-walled, hollow brick shapes prior to introducing it into a kiln. Depending on bed depth, temperature and N2/CO ratio, required residence times in the high temperature zone of the kiln can vary between about 6 and 10 hours. Escalating energy and electricity costs have become one of the largest drivers of expenditure in mining operations. Over the last eight years, energy costs have tripled when expressed as a percentage of total expenses in South African mines. In an effort to manage and reduce electricity costs, energy management strategies can be developed, inefficient operating units replaced, and the operation of energy-consuming components of ventilation systems optimized. Power consumption on mines is controlled mainly by three strategies, namely load clipping, by which energy use is reduced for certain parts of the day; load shifting, by which energy use is shifted to other parts of the day; and energy efficiency, by which energy use is reduced permanently. In this paper several projects that were implemented using the first two strategies of load clipping and load shifting are investigated. The actual and potential savings that can be achieved by implementing such energysaving interventions are presented. To reduce the operating costs of ventilating and cooling underground mines permanently, system optimization studies must be completed. Methods that can be used to reduce energy usage by optimizing cooling and ventilation systems are described, and network simulation models that accurately reflect the current and planned ventilation conditions are discussed. These models are then used to examine various options for improving the overall ventilation and cooling strategy. Different optimization scenarios can be simulated, and this assists the design engineer in obtaining the most energy-efficient system that will satisfy design workplace conditions. The final outcome is a reduction in operating costs, which can result in better operating margins and an extension of the life of mine.

A shortage of technical skills in all areas of the mining industry is being experienced worldwide. This has significant consequences for design, operations, productivity and safety and, therefore, needs to be seriously addressed, both in the short and longer term. It is therefore both a strategic and a tactical issue. Importantly, however, since mining is a long-term business, the shortage of skills must be dealt with from a strategic point of view to ensure the supply of the necessary skills for future mining. This paper will deal specifically with the provision of high level technical skills, that is, university graduates in mining engineering, and the outlook for the institutions that are currently producing such graduates.

Geostatistics was initially developed in the mining sector, but has been extended to other geoscience applications, including forestry, environmental science, soil science, and petroleum science and engineering. This paper presents methods, workflows, and pitfalls in using geostatistics for hydrocarbon resource modelling and evaluation. Examples are presented of indicator variogram analysis of categorical variables, lithofacies modelling by sequential indicator simulation and hierarchical workflow, porosity modelling by kriging and stochastic simulation, collocated cokriging for integrating seismic data, and collocated cosimulation for modelling porosity and permeability relationships. These methods together form a systematic approach that can be effectively used for modelling natural resources.

Deep-hole blasting operations in opencast mines are always associated with some annoyance to the surrounding areas in terms of ground vibration, noise, flyrock, etc. These become more severe when underground mines run parallel to them. Blasting in opencast mines may pose danger to the underground mines in terms of roof/side failures, damage of water dams, isolation/ventilation stoppings and other underground installations. The paper discusses a case study in India on the impact of deep-hole blasting in Ramagundam Opencast Project ? III on the stability of various water dams of GDK-6B Incline coal mine operating in close proximity. The stability of underground water dams of GDK-6B Incline mine was endangered due to deep-hole blasting at OCP-III. There were 15 water dams in seam 3 and 16 dams in seam 4 of the underground mine. The physical strength tests using a Schmidt Hammer instrument were carried out in all the 15 water dams of No. 3 seam and 16 water dams of No. 4 seam. The test revealed that there is a decrease in compressive strength values of three dams of seam 3, namely 6A, 6B and 7. Theose three dams were also directly connected to the water source. Water seepage was also observed from the surfaces of the three dams. However, they were found to be stable in accordance with their design parameters and damage point of view while considering a threshold value of ground vibration as 25 mm/s. It was found that the value of tensile stress generated by a vibration of 25 mm/s was much lower (i.e. 0.171N/mm2) than the tensile strength of the two weakest concrete dams (1.85 N/mm2). Ten experimental blasts were conducted at different working benches of the opencast mine and the ground vibration data were recorded in roof and pillars near various underground water dams. The maximum value of vibration data recorded was 5.9 mm/s in roof near dam no. 1 in seam 3 with the dominant peak frequency of 22 Hz. No adverse effect on either of the dams was observed after that blast. During the period of study, no deterioration/adverse impact was found in any dam of the mine. Based on the results of the study and the analyses of the data, optimized blast design parameters and explosives weight per delay were suggested for the opencast mine to maintain the safety of the underground water dams. Over the last few years Lonmin Platinum and Sandvik have embarked on a unique partnership of collaboration through a systematic approach to developing equipment to mechanize and automate narrow reef platinum mining. After the initial design and manufacture of the equipment the key aspect is the integrating equipment, people and method into a mining system. Another key aspect of mechanization is the optimization of equipment utilization, and this philosophy has ensured continual evolvement of mining methods. This paper describes the trials and development that have resulted in the mining method described as Lonmin mechanized breast.

This article is a continuation of a series of publications by the authors on the international debate on resource nationalism, with specific reference to South Africa. Previous outcomes have shown that mine nationalization is not a solution for South Africa, and that maintaining stability of the current mineral and tax regimes is fundamental. It will not be wise to replace existing law and policy instruments until there is a better understanding of the distinction between fact and public perception about the impact of the current system. The new scheme of state custodianship linked to a mining royalty that effectively targets economic rents provides for effective resource use. The methodology in this article is to consider how South Africa's mineral tax regime can be tweaked to achieve optimal management and benefit from mineral extraction and associated rents by avoiding changes feared by investors. The major finding is that the current suite of instruments can be considered a suitable platform for optimal management of resource rents. However, it will be necessary to first investigate ways of improving the mineral beneficiation intent of the royalty structure, and secondly investigate whether the mineral rent portion of the royalty formula can be ring-fenced for the purpose of establishing a sovereign wealth fund.

The move away from the use of strike stabilising pillars at depth and the adoption of the more flexible system of mining towards final dip remnant pillars brings new opportunities for optimising mine design. In the initial planning stage, the size and spacing of the final pillars is designed using classical design criteria, through limiting modelled values of Energy Release Rate (ERR), Average Pillar Stress (APS) and Excess Shear Stress (ESS). In reality, mines often leave pillars that are larger than those originally designed. One of the reasons for leaving more ground is an unexpectedly high rate of seismicity. In this paper, we present developments in integration of modelling and seismicity that are aimed at developing design criteria that are more responsive to local conditions.

Mineral Resource Throughput Management is based on the extraction of the maximum potential value from an ore reserve with the emphasis to generate maximum ROI and ROR (return on reserve). A steel producing company in India implemented MRTM to significantly improve their ROI and ROR. The value chain of this company consists of their own iron ore and coal mines, ore washing plants, sinter plants, steel plants, and sales and marketing division. The target for the mines was to produce at a stable and predictable rate and at specific quality requirements. These requirements were set to improve productivity and ROI of the steel plant. The implementation constituted the alignment of the reserve potential, total production chain, human resources and management culture at the mines with the requirements of the steel plant. Many typical mining practices were challenged and changed. Production targets regarding lump vs. fines ratio, consistent product tons, quality targets such as Fe, Al content and moist, and standard deviation on the quality targets were not achieved. A reverse distribution model with release mechanisms to satisfy the demand were developed and implemented at the mines. A stable and predictable flow of mine product with quality standards well within the required standard deviation targets were achieved. The contribution from the mines to significantly improve the Net Profit, ROI and ROR of the company were reached.

The purpose of the investigation was to assess various options for increasing the efficiency of the conveyor belt transporting system used at 4 Belt Shaft at Lonmin?s Marikana operations. The reason for the investigation was to prevent the occurrence of a ?bottleneck? at the main ore passes delivering ore to the conveyor belt system, thus creating more fluent operational conditions. The options assessed for increasing the efficiency of the conveyor belt transporting system were: ?Variation of the conveyor speed ?Concurrent tipping from two ore passes on the belt ?Increase the available drive unit power ?Increasing the feed rate from vibratory feeders ?Change in belt width/belt specifications The report shows that the most preferable option to the current situation at 4 Belt, Lonmin, would be the option of concurrent tipping from two ore passes to the belt.

Over the past decade there has been a great deal of research into the use of virtual reality (VR) and computer graphics in the mining industry. Much of this has led to developed applications including training simulators and accident reconstruction. One other area where there is considerable potential for virtual reality is that of mining ergonomics. This paper identifies those common ergonomic limitations associated with mining equipment that can be effectively modelled using VR techniques. From this, two simple models have been developed, namely (i) remote control continuous miner operation and (ii) free steered vehicle sight-lines, which demonstrate the practical use of VR in this area.

In recent times, there has been criticism of the minerals industry over the lack of quantifiable boundaries between inferred, indicated, and Measured resources. A recent initiative through the United Nations aims to try to converge the mineral resource classification systems. Since the oil and gas industry uses a probabilistic approach to defining reserve boundaries, it is appropriate to introduce a similar statistical methodology for minerals. The Venmyn Variance Tower has been developed based upon traditional statistics to utilize historical and ongoing information in order to quantify variance of geological and chemical parameters and the boundaries and logic for quantitative mineral resource classification. It is proposed that a less than 50% variance from the mean of all sample parameters is required to achieve the classification threshold to define an inferred Resource whereas between 20-10% is needed for an indicated Resource and less than 10% variance from the mean is needed to declare a Measured Resource. These limits are similar to those used by the oil and gas industry, and it is suggested that these thresholds be adopted as an industry standard to ensure consistent quantitative reporting. While this process is intended to use statistics of an orebody to provide quantifiable and defendable boundaries, it cannot be carried out unless the geology of the mineral deposit is understood and the borehole samples can be categorized into appropriate populations for which the statistics are valid. This means that competent geologists are always required to work with and understand the implications of the Variance Tower results. This paper is intended to form the basis of a series of publications that establish a process to take mineral projects along a quantifiable and logical development path. Hence, no specific field example of the practical application of this process is given here.

Worldwide, the major Manganese ores can be separated into three different types: ?Oxidized ores (MnO2): in Australia, Gabon, Brazil,?. ?Semi-oxidized ores (Mn2O3): in South-Africa, Australia,?. ?Carbonated ore (MnCO3): in Ghana, South Africa, Kazhakstan?. The other Manganese ores are less rich but can be used locally or in the neighbour countries (China, Ukraina, India?). Since the beginning of the 20th Century, Manganese has played a big role in the steel industry process average usage ratio: 9,5 kg/mt of steel). The recent grow-up of this industry has led to an increase of Manganese ores demand. In parallel, several companies have increased their Manganese ore producing capacity. In this presentation, we explain the link between the main Manganese ores characteristics and the key different factors for an effective and low cost Mn alloys production (HCFeMn and SiMn): ?Chemistry ?Size ?Reactivity Then we will point out the advantages of Comilog ore and Sintec ® usages in various Manganese alloy metallurgical process compared with the other main ores and with the local ores. Some advised formulations for the different kinds of furnaces and alloys will be also discussed.

The research project reported on represents the first comprehensive attempt to measure the vibration levels of a variety of tools and equipment in the South African mining industry to determine the effect thereof on the health of workers and operators. Although human vibration has been studied extensively internationally only one reference pertaining to the South African mining industry could be found. From studies conducted in Canada and elsewhere it was evident that rock drills do have potentially hazardous levels of vibration. The scope of the research included measurements on a broad spectrum of tools, machines and vehicles used in the South African mining industry. Both hand-arm vibration, where the majority of the vibration enter the body through the hands, and whole body vibration, where the whole body is exposed to vibration through contact by the buttocks or feet, were investigated and measured. More than 700 sets of vibration data measured on 70 machines at 15 mines and workshops were obtained. Data were obtained for at least 24 different types of equipment and machines that were previously judged to have medium to high levels of vibration. All measurements were conducted in accordance with the international standards: ISO 5349, on hand-arm vibration, and ISO 2631-1, for whole body vibration. The equipment with the highest vibration levels in the hand-arm category was: rock drills, both pneumatic and hydraulic; pavement breakers and jackhammers; hand-held compactors; pneumatic wrenches and electrical hammer drills. Of these the rock drills had weighted vibration levels in excess of 20 m/s2. As far as whole body vibration was concerned the highest values were measured on earth-moving equipment. The major conclusion from this study is that the measured vibration levels are sufficiently high to create an enhanced level of risk of vibration-induced disorders in a significant proportion of the operators of hand-held equipment. The most notable examples are hand-held rock drills, pavement breakers, jackhammers and certain selected workshop tools. The results of the study indicate that a comprehensive epidemiological study should be undertaken on present and past workers to determine the prevalence of vibration-induced disorders.

A scraper based block cave method has been successfully applied to extract the Lower Ore Body at Nchanga since the 1950?s. Since inception, scraper drifts and service ways have been supported using steel arch sets fabricated to a specific design from high strength manganese steel To reduce costs and to improve productivity, trials commenced in 2002 using fibre reinforced shotcrete as an alternative support method. One of the areas; the 2420 8E 1C trial drift was subjected to abutment loading for several months prior to undercutting and cave mining. Shotcrete installed exhibited minor cracking shortly after application but very little deterioration thereafter. Following the success of the trial, the application of fibre reinforced shotcrete was extended to other drifts. This paper describes the application of fibre reinforced shotcrete at Nchanga and outlines design and quality assurance methods employed.
