One of the challenging problems for optimization in mining operations is to choose the best equipment among the alternatives. Equipment selection is an important task for mine management due to its operational cost, and is also an integral part of mine planning and design. Equipment selection is not a well-defined process because it involves the interaction of several subjective factors or criteria. Besides, decisions are often complicated and may even embody contradictions. Therefore, equipment selection is considered as a multi-criteria decision-making process, and suitable decision-making methods should be employed in this process. In this study, the loader selection for Aegean Lignite Colliery was made by using both the analytic hierarchy process and Yager’s method. Owing to the misusage of Yager’s method in the past, a new procedure is proposed in this paper for making proper decisions. It is highly recommended in this purposed method that criteria or alternatives should be grouped so as not to exceed the limitations of human performance (nine criteria/alternatives). The most appropriate solution for the loader selection was investigated by obeying this limitation for each method, and the results were compared. At the end of the decision-making process, a sensitivity analysis was applied for each method in order to see how a criterion affects the final decision. The advantages and disadvantages encountered during the application of each decision-making method are presented.

Before we look at what the challenges and opportunities for future coal mining will be, it is appropriate to have a look at whether there will be a coal industry in the future. There is much talk about the damage caused by the burning of fossil fuels and the need to replace coal and oil with more environmentally friendly energy sources. Yes, there is evidence that the current practice in burning of fossil fuel has certain negative environmental effects, however, the adverse effects for global economic development from inappropriate measures to control greenhouse gas emissions would be severe.

Metal dusting is a corrosion phenomenon that occurs in strongly carburizing gas atmospheres at elevated temperatures. Reaction kinetics and product characterizations of Alloys 602CA and 800 were examined by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD).The results showed that Alloy 602CA is more resistant to metal dusting than Alloy 800. Visual examination and SEM surface analysis showed that Alloy 800 suffered metal dusting attack after a relatively short exposure period. The amount of coke deposits increased on Alloy 800 with increased exposure from 96 to 336 hours. X-ray diffraction on the reacted surfaces identified graphite and austenite in both alloys and some iron oxides/spinel for Alloy 800.

The roasting of sulphide ores and concentrates is often the first step in the production of metals or chemicals. In many processes, the production of sulphuric acid is viewed as a by-product, while in some plants production is an important economic factor. Regardless of the purpose, a pyrite roasting plant consists of mainly three plant sections: roasting, gas cleaning and sulphuric acid. With the addition of air, the pyrite concentrates are transformed into solid oxides and gaseous sulphur dioxide at temperatures of 600 - 1000° C. After cleaning and cooling, the sulphur dioxide in the roasting gas is further processed to sulphuric acid. Two types of reactors are used depending on the application: stationary or circulating fluid bed . For over 60 years, Outotec has progressively been developing the principle of fluidised bed technology in several different reactor types for a multitude of process applications. The versatility of the fluidised bed reactor system has manifested itself in the treatment of minerals, including solid fuels, and for metallurgical processes both in the ferrous and non-ferrous fields. Process applications have included roasting, calcining, combustion and charring of coals, as well as off-gas treatment. This paper provides a summary of the pyrite roasting technology currently used along with a simple cost comparison of pyrite roasting and sulphur burning processes.

This article uses the case of the Royal Bafokeng Nation to argue that royalties and dividends from mineral resources, if managed well, can provide direct benefits to the surrounding community even while the state collects its share of mining revenues through taxation. The key to this model is the effective management of the resource income flowing into community coffers. Where some of this income may fund urgent interventions in the community, a portion of the income can also be used to establish an intergenerational wealth fund to meet the needs of future generations. As a depleting resource, minerals like gold and platinum are not a sustainable source of income, and must be replaced over time by more regenerative income streams. These strategies and dynamics are manifest in the Royal Bafokeng Nation?s status as both community and quasi-municipality, a labour hosting and a labour sending community, a mine operator and a mine owner. The Royal Bafokeng Nation also owns one of South Africa?s largest community-based investment companies, which channels revenue derived from platinum deposits into a broad investment portfolio that in turn funds an aggressive social development program for 150,000 people living in twenty-nine rural villages.

Traditionally, dithiocarbonates (xanthates) have been the preferred collectors for the flotation of platinum-bearing sulphides. However, collector development has led to trithiocarbonates (TTC), which have proven to be very effective bulk sulphide collectors. The interest in TTC flotation behaviour is currently focused on the interaction of these collectors with other collectors, specifically the dithicarbonates. Batch-flotation research has shown synergism to exist among dithiocarbonate, dithiophosphate and trithiocarbonate collectors. Increased sulphide recoveries, both for the first-minute and final concentrate, were realized using mixtures of these collectors relative to the standard.

This article deals with an investigation into the specification and use of appropriate seating systems to reduce whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure in typical vehicles used in the SA mining industry. The EU Directive EU/44/2002 to be legislated in 2005 in European countries, provides legal and economic motivation for this project. The criteria for seat selection can be condensed to the requirements in the directive, which mandates an action level of 0.5 m/s2and a vibration exposure limit of 1.15 m/s2 for an equivalent 8-hour daily exposure period. As part of this study six suspension seats, which the manufacturers claim satisfy the requirements in ISO 70966, were tested to determine the most suitable seat for an articulated dump truck. Six test subjects, three ?light? and three ?heavy? as specified in ISO 70966, were used to estimate the seat transmissibility functions in the vertical direction of the six different suspension seats. Transmissibility functions were measured in the laboratory with two excitation levels of 1 m/s2 and 2 m/s2 r.m.s. in the 0.5?30 Hz frequency range, as well as one spectrum approximating the EM5 spectral class. SEAT values were calculated for road vibration data measured on a typical articulated dump truck. A set of seat selection guidelines that can be followed by vehicle manufacturers and suppliers, procurement officers and and the technical staff on a mine is proposed in this article. It is recommended that additional studies of the use and operating conditions of seating systems in the SA industry, as well as an epidemiological survey be commissioned to gather additional information on this subject. Detailed monitoring of the response of the rock mass between rockbolt reinforcement units subjected to a simulated seismic source has been successfully conducted. This work has shown the increase in amplification of the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) with distance from a rock bolt unit, and, a minimum PPV for rockburst damage for the given site characteristics. This understanding, at this site, will allow the design of a suitable rock bolt spacing to prevent unravelling of the rock mass between the rock bolt units for a given level of seismicity. Or, alternatively, an estimation of the requirement for a suitable fabric support system, for the anticipated level of seismicity, can be made.

Zincite and spinel phases are present in the complex slag systems encountered in zinc/lead sintering and zinc smelting processes. These phases form extensive solid solutions and are stable over a wide range of compositions, temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. Accurate information on the stability of these phases is required in order to develop thermodynamic models of these slag systems. Phase equilibria in the Fe-Zn-O system have been experimentally studied for a range of conditions, between 900 and 1580°C and oxygen partial pressures (pO2) between air and metallic iron saturation, using equilibration and quenching techniques. The compositions of the phases were measured using Electron Probe X-ray Microanalysis (EPMA). The ferrous and ferric bulk iron concentrations were determined using a specially developed wet-chemical analysis procedure based on the use of ammonium metavanadate. XRD was used to confirm phase identification. A procedure was developed to overcome the problems associated with evaporation of zinc at lowpO2s and to ensure the achievement of equilibria. An isothermal section of the system FeO-Fe2O3-ZnO at high ZnO concentrations at 1200°C was constructed. The maximum solubilities of iron and zinc in zincite and spinel phases in equilibrium were determined at pO2=1*10-6atm at 1200and 1300°C. The morphology of the zincite crystals sharply changes in air between 1200 and 1300°C from rounded to plate-like. This is shown to be associated with significant increase in total iron concentration, the additional iron being principally in the form of ferric iron. Calculations performed by Fact Sage with a thermodynamically optimized database have been compared with the experimental results. Mintek developed the MinataurTM leach-solvent extraction-precipitation technology as a cost effective, easily operated alternative to conventional gold refining processes. The technology was first commercialized at the Harmony Gold Refinery in 1997 to produce 99.99 per cent gold product and has subsequently led to development of various value-addition steps including the casting of various investment bars, gold wire drawing and gold potassium cyanide powder production. In addition to refining gold to high purity, if an appreciable amount of silver is present in the feed material it is also refined to 99.99 per cent purity. The major advantage that the Minataur? technology has over other gold refining processes is the relatively low gold lock-up and reduced operating costs. The operating cost1as at April 2001 for the expanded Harmony refinery (24-ton per annum gold production) was approximately half that of conventional smelting and toll refining. The extractant employed for solvent extraction is relatively cheap and highly selective for gold, making the technology attractive in situations where significant quantities of platinum group metals or base metals are present.

Pt-based alloys are being developed for high-temperature applications with the aim of replacing some of the currently used Ni-based superalloys (NBSAs) in the highest temperature applications. The Pt-based alloys have a similar structure to the NBSAs, and since Pt is more chemically inert than nickel and has a higher melting point, they can potentially be used at higher temperatures, up to 1300°C, and in more aggressive environments. Several experimental Pt-based alloys were studied at Mintek, and an optimum composition was found to be Pt84:Ahi:Ru2:Cr3 (at.%). On the basis of hardness and microstructure, a later study identified a new optimum: Ptr8:A111:Ru5:Cr6 (at.%). There are at least two Pt3A1 allotropes, and the high-temperature cubic structure has better properties than the lower temperature tetragonal form, and so needs to be stabilized. This work describes the latest results obtained in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies of the quaternary Pt-based superalloys. These results are both interesting and important, because the samples have a higher precipitate density compared to those from earlier work. The precipitate morphology is mainly cubic, with minor areas having irregular-shaped precipitates. The high volume fraction of the precipitates is a major breakthrough, since the objective of this work is to improve the alloys. A prior disadvantage was that the proportion of the precipitates was too low in samples before this work, especially compared with the work from Germany on Pt-Al-Cr-Ni¬-based alloys as well as the NBSAs. TEM -Pt3A1 diffraction patterns were studied, and for each diffraction pattern, many possible lattice point combinations were tried, with the angle between the lattice spots as well as interplanar spacings being calculated for each phase (cubic or tetragonal) to match the measured results. An overall analysis of the diffraction results indicates that the cubic phase fitted the experimental lattice points with much lower errors compared to the tetragonal phase. Thus, with the close match achieved with the cubic structure, the structure of -Pt3A1 precipitates is likely to be cubic. X-ray diffraction has been carried out on selected samples, and the results confirmed the presence of cubic -Pt3A1 and (Pt). Different X¬ray diffractometers were used to further verify the results, and the results were also compared with those from TEM.

The diffusion of carbon in Co-5% Fe alloy was studied in a belt-type pressure system at temperatures of up to 1330°C and press loads or nominal pressures of 7 020 tons or 42±3 kbar. Under these conditions, this alloy is in the solid state. Discs of graphite and prealloyed Co-5%Fe were used to make up the diffusion couple. The diffusion coefficient increased with increasing press load due to the tendency of the low density graphite to dissolve in the metallic phase reducing the overall volume and increasing the density of the system. Furthermore, inhomogeneous plastic deformation may have promoted diffusion by creating defects in the alloy. Diffusion couples treated at atmospheric pressure exhibited graphite particles in the metal, while those treated at high pressures exhibited carbide in the form of Widmanstatten laths. Carbon analyses indicated increased carbon solubility with increasing pressure. This was confirmed from calculated high-pressure phase diagrams.

Sulphuric acid plants now and then see unexpected increases in SO2 emissions. Our experience is that it is not always easy for the acid plants to pinpoint the exact reason for the SO2 increase. Sometimes a catalyst bed is sacrificed even though reliable temperature readings and gas analyses could have verified satisfactory activity. Hence the leaking heat exchanger is never discovered and after the shutdown the SO2 emissions are still too high. This paper will look into some basic catalyst management tools: good record keeping is a necessity for collection of representative catalyst samples; reliable operating data is an inevitable starting point for all analysis; and trending of operating data is a must for plant optimization and troubleshooting. In addition, these catalyst management tools will give continuous updated knowledge of the catalyst status in each bed, providing the basis for a more effective replacement strategy. The most typical reasons for increasing SO2 emissions will be presented together with easy guidelines for cross-checking operating data, temperature optimization and good record keeping.

Driefontein Consolidated Limited has a proud history in the South African gold mining industry dating back to March 1945 with the formation of the West Driefontein Gold Mining Company. The reclamation gold plant at West Driefontein was originally built as a uranium recovery plant in 1970. With the collapse of the uranium oxide yellow cake market, the uranium plant was closed in 1988and successfully converted into a gold plant, recovering gold from repulped tailings dams1. The West Driefontein Reclaim plant utilized milling, leaching, conventional rotary vacuum filtration and cementation to recover the gold at a rate of 200,000 dry tons per month. The No. 1 tailings dam (at a head grade of 0.8 Au g/t) began to near the end of its life during 1996, and the next slimes dams to be treated, the No. 2tailings dam (at a lower head grade of 0.56 Au g/t) was found too marginal for reprocessing using the filtration technology. Alternate technologies were investigated, particularly the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant based on the Anglo-American Corporation (AAC) pump-cell technology at the Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company?s East gold plant which was operating profitably at lower head grades2. The AAC pump-cell technology is based on the carousel mode of operation2. The suitability of CIP technology for the West Driefontein Reclaim plant was investigated using a pilot plant pump-cell supplied by Kemix The data gathered were utilized in sizing a full scale AAC pump-cell plant. This plant was motivated, built and commissioned on the 22nd of November 1996. Incorporating 6 eighty cubic metre AAC pump-cells. The West Driefontein Reclaim plant initially treated repulped slimes dam material. A subsequent change of feed material to current arisings (from the main gold plant) occurred in1997 in order to convert mills for waste rock treatment. Currently the reclaim plant treats a combination of current arisings and waste rock (milled at the reclaim site). The new CIP plant replaced twenty-seven rotary vacuum filters. A comparison between the filters and CIP in terms of operating costs was undertaken, as well as a performance analysis of the CIP plant to determine its flexibility in terms of variation of the throughput, pulp density, gold input, leaching efficiency prior to CIP, and the rate of carbon movement.

This paper presents an overview of work carried out by the CSIR Division of Mining Technology and formerly by the Chamber of Mines Research Organization (COMRO) to quantify the behaviour of the stope fracture zone near deep level goldmine stopes. The motivation for this work is first reviewed in the context of the unsatisfactory status of current mine layout design criteria. Numerical methods to represent failure processes are reviewed briefly. Specific studies of microfracture processes are described as well as physical modelling experiments that can yield insights into deformation mechanisms. Modelling of stope scale deformation mechanisms are presented and considerations relating to elastodynamic modelling of the rock mass are described. The implications of this understanding in relation to prospects for active fracture zone ?engineering? are outlined and finally, the directions of future research work are proposed.

"SynopsisGibb Consulting Services was contracted by Eskom Line Engineering Services to conduct an investigation to determine the absolute displacement to date and infer the current rate of displacement of unsurveyed colliery backfill.At the test site, where a 400 kV power line is to be constructed, neither the surface nor the backfill material had been monitored and it was not possible to state whether the surface will be subject to future settlement that may compromise surface infrastructure. Therefore indirect methods of estimating current and future displacements needed to be found to act as a proxy for a comprehensive long-term settlement monitoring exercise and provide a reasonable estimate for the settlement that has occurred in the decades of mining.The innovative solution was to recover essentially undisturbed core from backfill using a sonic drill rig and use the measured dry density values from the samples as a proxy for the rate and absolute displacement in the backfill.The success in obtaining an essentially undisturbed backfill core and the clear relationship of the backfill density with age and depth allowed the conclusion to be issued that the power line infrastructure can be constructed over the backfill; with a warning that once the water table recovers after mining ceases some collapse settlement may occur.With this method, the amount of settlement can be predicted and, if proven conclusively, provides a way to confidently release huge areas of currently waste ground for future surface infrastructural development.IntroductionIn coal mining, it is normal mining practice to backfill the newly mined-out voids with the excavated waste rock and soils. As there is no requirement for the mining companies to uniformly compact the spoil or accurately monitor surface or inter-backfill displacement, these backfilled voids are prone to differential compaction and consolidation settlement. They are therefore avoided as sites for future surface infrastructure work, especially for linear structures such as roads, railways, and power lines."

The paper examines the design issues associated with the integration of mineral processing within underground mining systems. It demonstrates conceptual integrated system design options appropriate to a range of geological scenarios. Particular reference is then given to a case study of stoping in narrow base metal veins. The performance of such integrated systems in terms of productivity, economic and environmental criteria is demonstrated by means of simulation. Particular attention is given to the potential benefits to mine waste management. Processing technologies appear to offer genuine potential benefit, whilst underground mining methods may need to evolve further to facilitate full integration. This paper is based on industry supported research aimed at developing selective and clean underground mining systems.

Ongoing Outokumpu development in Solvent Extraction and Electrowinning Technology, involving all aspects of process chemistry, equipment and control, extends over a period of close to 30 years. The development in SX started with molybdenum and rhenium, continued with zinc, manganese, cobalt and nickel and is now focusing on copper. The OutoCompact VSF? SX concept, which has been recently introduced, is a honed version of earlier VSF? technology. The Outokumpu VSF? ("Vertical Smooth Flow") SX package includes the DOP ("Dispersion Overflow Pump") units, the Spirok Mixers, the OutoCompact Settlers including their DDG ("Dispersion Depletor Gate") fences and tank farm equipment such as the LOS ("Loaded Organic Scrubbing") tank as well as the CEP ("Copper Electrolyte Purifying") tank. Although the VSF? SX package can be implemented according to several optional lay-outs, the so-called Track version has lately been introduced to the advantage of new plants. The new OutoCompact SX technology decreases the footprint of future VSF? plants. The lay-out, including plant size flexibility, have further been improved by Outokumpu?s new OutoReverse settler technology. Two of several SX plants currently under construction rely on reverse settlers in order to maximize their performance. The Outokumpu EW technology includes process know-how as well as proprietary equipment. The copper EW package consists of permanent stainless steel cathodes based on wax-less technology and lead anodes utilising polymer concrete cells with the double contact bus bar system and ventilation hoods fitted for efficient mist control. The lifting of cell hoods, as well as cathode washing, is done by the cathode pulling crane. Proper electrolyte flows and matching current density further ensure high productivity of LME grade copper cathodes.
