The Bureau of Mines has developed a time-dependent mathematical model of radiative heating of bulkheads in mines. The model includes both reradiation from the duct (cylindrical) walls and direct radiation from the fire zone. Thermal loss into the wall of the duct and into the bulkhead is included. Both brick and wood bulkheads are considered. It is found that the heating rate of the system scales as the duct length-to-diameter ratio and the flame temperature. In particular, the time required for the irradiated surface of the bulkhead to reach a specified temperature decreases with increasing flame temperature for a fixed length-to-diameter ratio and increases with increasing length-to-diameter ratio for a specified flame temperature. It is also deter-mined that the time, T, for the bulkhead surface temperature to reach a specific value, Tb, for a fixed length-to-diameter ratio less than 4 and for a flame temperature of 1,200 K is approximately linearly dependent on Tb for 500 K < Tb < 700 K, and is nearly exponentially dependent on the length-to-diameter ratio for Tb = 600 and 700 K.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a field test for detecting the presence of columbium in a variety of minerals containing the clement. The test consists of fusing the mineral or rock powder with potassium pyrosulfate in a porcelain crucible, digesting the melt with hot dilute hydrochloric acid to release the columbium oxide (Cb205), and subsequently reducing the columbium oxide to a lower oxide by adding tin, which gives a blue color to the contents of the crucible. The method will detect 1 percent of contained columbium oxide (Cb205) in a mineral sample provided no tungsten is present. If a mineral containing appreciable titanium is test,-!d in the same manner, the solution in the crucible becomes violet. In the presence of columbium, titanium at first causes a violet coloration of the solution, which after a few minutes is masked by the stronger blue of the reduced columbium oxide. Although tantalum oxide (Ta205) does not interfere with the columbium test, tungsten gives a blue color that is indistinguishable from the color obtained with columbium. A simple method is available to detect the presence of columbium in the absence of tungsten, but when the presence of tungsten is suspected, the sample must be subjected to somewhat more elaborate chemical tests to determine the presence or absence of columbium. Although these latter tests can be made in the field, several steps are involved that arc best performed in the laboratory with simple equipment.

Applicability of the fluosilicate sintering process to recovering beryllium from beryl-spodumene concentrate analyzing 1.4 to 3.7 percent BeO (10 to 30 percent beryl) was investigated. The work was one phase of a Bureau of Mines research program undertaken to assess applicability of conventional processes and to devise new procedures for treating various potential beryllium feed materials. Beryllium recovery of about 70 percent in a product of 99-percent BeO grade was achieved in treating 3D-percent beryl concentrate. The process consisted of (1) sintering a briquetted charge of concentrate, soda ash, and sodium fluosilicate for 3 hours at 750° C.; (2) extracting the soluble beryllium by multiple stages of water leaching; (3) adding caustic to the leach solution and boiling to hydrolyze and precipitate crude beryllium hydroxide; (4) dissolving the crude beryllium hydroxide in sulfuric acid and separating the solution from undissolved silica; (5) sulfidizing the acid beryllium solution to precipitate heavy metal impurities; (6) adding ammonia to the clarified sulfate solution to precipitate beryllium hydroxide; and (7) converting the hydroxide to beryllium oxide (beryllia) by calcining at 900° C. About 60 percent more sodium fluoSilicate was required per unit of beryl than is used industrially in treating 10-to 12-percent BeO concentrate (80 to 90 percent beryl). Recovery decreased, and flux requirements increased, when treating concentrates containing less beryl.

This chapter includes tables for 1979 that were not available in time for publication in the 1978-79 Minerals Yearbook, but it does not include corresponding tables for 1980. The value of raw nonfuel mineral output in 1980 was estimated at $24.8 billion, 8.5% above the 1979 value. Of the 21 metal commodities produced, quantitative output increased for 11 and decreased for 10. The values for 10 metals were up, 10 were down, and 1 was unchanged. Among the 47 non-metallic commodities produced, 14 showed quantitative increases, 32 declined, and 1 was unchanged. In terms of value, 32 nonmetallics increased, and 15 declined.

During the 12 months ended July 1, 1931, engineers of the Bureau of Mines examined electrical equipment in 80 bituminous-coal mines. The purpose of these examinations was to ascertain the condition of such equipment with respect to possible hazards of gas and dust ignitions, also of shock. Although only 3 of the 80 were being worked with open lights and therefore did not use explosion-proof equipment, there were others where electric cap lamps were used by the men but where it was apparently assumed that conditions as to gas and dust did not require equipment designed to give protection against ignitions. Early in its history the United States Bureau of Mines originated certain standards covering the construction and testing of electrical equipment in order to minimize the dangers of ignitions from exposed electric sparks and flashes ; accordingly, it is comparatively easy to determine wherein a machine built to these standards falls short of continuing to meet them if damaged or neglected. Many so-called flame-proof and dust-proof machines, however, have not been built to any standard comparable with that developed by the Bureau of Mines. In addition, certain machines have parts which pass Bureau of Mines tests, but do not satisfy the full requirements in other respects, and others make no pretense of inclosing the spark-producing parts. It is not uncommon to find two or more of these various types in the same mine with " permissible " machines, the type that has been built to conform to the Bureau of Mines standard. Consequently, inspection of nonpermissible machines becomes somewhat difficult without a standard of comparison. Because of its unprotected condition obviously open-type electrical equipment must be used with great care, if at all, in a mine where precautionary measures are adopted in guarding against gas and dust ignition. The unsafe nature of such equipment is widely recognized. For that reason it is to be installed only where there is no likelihood of gas being present. It is not apparent to some, however, why flame-proof and dust-proof equipment and equipment having tested parts should not be regarded in the same light as permissible equipment.

US. National Institute for Occupational .Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers are conducting a Cross-sectional survey of equipment noise and worker noise exposures in the mining industry. Surface and underground limestone is one commodity recently sun eyed. The sound levels of milling and processing equipment were recorded to identify noise sources. Full-shift worker noise exposures were completed to determine the exposure of various occupations. This article presents the results o f the noise research conducted in both underground and surface limestone manes, detailing the equipment likely to cause worker overexposures, and the occupations experiencing overexposures. Implications for worker noise exposure reduction are also reported.

Software techniques developed by the Bureau of Mines Denver Research Center for real-time microseismic data analysis are presented. These techniques focus on the simple acquisition of P-wave arrival times and their use in event location. The paper discusses in detail software techniques to separate microseismic events from mining noise such as drilling and from very large events such as rock bursts. Incorporation of these techniques has enhanced the reliability and accuracy of computer-based monitoring of microseismic activity in ongoing research by the Bureau.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting research to determine the effectiveness of long holes in degasifying an area of the Upper Split of the Lower Sunnyside coalbed at Kaiser Steel Co.&apos;s Sunnyside No.1 mine. These holes were drilled from the two outside entries of a section that was closed to mining because of excessive methane emissions. Two holes drilled to 430 and 450 feet produced initial gas flows of 160,000 and 127,000 cfd, respectively. Sixteen days after the completion of the second hole, the total gas production declined to just over 144,000 cfd. In 9 months of degasification, over 35 MMcf of commercial-quality gas has been removed from the coalbed. The combined gas flows declined to 106,000 cfd in the 9-month period. The two holes have reduced face emissions by about 40 pet.

The Bureau of Mines has evaluated four working-level radiation-measurement methods and optimized them from the inherent and statistical error standpoint. Optimization with respect to various sampling and measurement times yielded no marked improvement over the existing methods. However, when appropriate approximations are made and evaluated, these two-measurement methods can be reduced to simple formulas, eliminating a need to use nomograms. These modified methods also have improved inherent error characteristics. A new method--a combination of two existing methods--with improved inherent and statistical errors has been suggested. All the pertinent equations are given, together with the computer program, so that any two-measurement method can be readily evaluated.

The Bureau of Mines used mathematical reliability theory to define, for use in the mining industry, the concepts of risk, safety, reliability, hazard, and mean time between accidents. In this report, the definitions are explained theoretically and illustrated by application to actual underground mine accident data extending over a 9-1/2-year period. The theoretical development proceeds along two parallel analytical paths. For each line of reasoning, the data are presumed to be independent. If they are not, the analysis stops, although there are interesting implications when dependency is demonstrated. The first method uses the elapsed times between accidents as the basic data. These elapsed times are fitted to a negative exponential distribution function using least squares and yielding the function parameter, P1 The P1 is used to form the Poisson distribution function for the data, which is then used to define the safety-related concepts. The second method uses the maximum likelihood estimator to formulate a Poisson distribution function for the data. The function is tested for adequacy by a goodness-of-fit test; if the fit is acceptable, the Poison function is used to define the concepts. Both methods were applied to the data base, yielding nearly identical results.

This paper describes a U.S. Bureau of Mines investigation of large-scale coal dust explosions in an experimental mine using a high speed electro pneumatic mechanism for the rapid grab-sampling of gases and dusts. This technique enables the monitoring of pyrolysis and charring in fuel dust particles, and the collection of gaseous combustion products, in both large and small-scale explosions. Data obtained from full-scale dust explosion tests at the Bureau of Mines Lake Lynn Test facility show the following: Rapid sampling appears to "freeze" the burned gas compositions at the flame temperature values. Gas samples taken entirely in the flame zone consist of pyrolysis and combustion products with very low residual oxygen. The particles collected in the flame zone show signs of extensive pyrolysis and charring. Measurements of gas concentrations and particle flame temperatures suggest that char burning may have occurred in the flame zone.

The Bureau of Mines has developed structural design data for unreinforced concrete tunnel linings in the form of stress and deflection coefficients from which bending, axial, shear, and boundary stresses, moments, thrusts, and shear forces, and structural deflections can be determined at any point on the lining. Results were obtained by structural analyses of nine concrete-lined tunnel configurations subjected to 22 biaxial load conditions. The tunnel configurations include three basic shapes, circular, rectangular, and horse-shoe, with dimensions based on designs evolved by the mining industry. These analyses were made by the direct stiffness matrix method, a computer-oriented procedure. Numerical results agree closely with those obtained experimentally.

To a greater or lesser extent, the economies of the smaller Caribbean Island countries continued to have common problems. These included unemployment, inflation, foreign exchange shortages, trade deficits, and unstable world prices for their exports. Declining prices for petroleum provided some relief from scarce foreign exchange. Overall, the mineral sector remained stable. The Amerada Hess Corp. crude oil transshipment terminal on St. Lucia was completed during 1981. However, there were no shipments during the year. No official reason was offered for the delay in opening the terminal, but it may have been related to the world surplus of crude oil that occurred in 1981. There has been no further action on the refinery, which was to complete the island&apos;s petroleum complex. During the first half of 1981, an announcement was made that a second oil transshipment terminal would be built on St. Lucia. The report indicated that the terminal was to be financed by Saudi Arabia and include underground storage. After the original announcement, no further information was made available. This terminal, like the Hess petroleum complex, may have been temporarily postponed because of the crude oil surplus.

The manufacture of lubricating oils from wax-bearing crude petroleums involves the removal and recovery of the paraffin wax contained in the lubricating distillates. During this process several intermediate products are formed, among them the mixture of waxes and oils known to the refiners as "foots oil." Because of its complex character, foots oil is little understood, and therefore methods of handling it in refineries are often inefficient. The Bureau of Mines is studying the manufacture of lubricating oils, and during the work has investigated the redistillation of foots oil. This report gives in brief the results of the investigation, and recommendations based upon it.

Highwall mining continues to grow in importance as a coal production method from U.S. surface mines. It may account for as much as 4% of the total U.S. coal production, according to one recent estimate. Analysis of Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) accident and injury statistics shows that, overall, highwall mining has maintained an admirable safety record. Its fatality and injury rates are comparable to those for other surface mining methods, and are significantly lower than those for underground mining. No mining method is risk free, however. Highwall mining injuries have been associated with handling materials, slips and falls, machinery, powered haulage, and other types of incidents. But perhaps the greatest risk, to both personnel and equipment, is from ground control. The two most significant ground control hazards are rock falls from the highwall and equipment entrapment underground. Highwall Stability Ensuring highwall stability through proper ground control engineering is of paramount importance to safe highwall mining operations. The only fatality to occur during the last five years at a highwall mining operation was due to highwall collapse. There have also been numerous near-misses, several of which have involved extensive damage to equipment. In the central Appalachians, where the majority of highwall mining occurs in the U.S., hillseams are the most prominent geologic structures that affect highwall stability. Hillseams (or mountain cracks) are near vertical fractures in the rock that are formed in response to natural weathering and erosion of hillsides. They extend hundreds of feet down from the surface. They typically run parallel to the hillside, but they can also extend across narrow points or ridge lines. The hazard arises when rock slabs that form along the hillseams detach and fall away from the highwall face (See Figure 1). [ ] Unfortunately, it is impossible to control the location of hillseams or reliably detect their presence within a highwall. There are, however, a number of measures that can be taken to minimize the risk of failure associated with hillseams: Planning-Most operators choose to skip those areas of the highwall where a prominent hillseam daylights (See Figure 2). Existence of such areas is known for several weeks in advance of highwall mining; therefore, planning engineers can adjust the layout of highwall mining panels to locate barrier pillars within areas of questionable highwall stability. [ ] Inspection and monitoring-Daily inspection of the benches above the active highwall mining area is a prudent precautionary measure. A crack in a bench immediately above a highwall miner is shown in Figure 3. Simple displacement monitors may be useful for detecting movement along cracks that may precede a significant life-threatening failure. New tools, such as slope monitoring radar, may also prove useful in detecting motion of the rock slopes above active highwall mining operations. Good blasting practice-Most surface coal miners in the central Appalachians use pre-splitting and the familiar halfbarrels are routinely seen throughout the pits. Shorter delays along the face and longer delays between rows can direct more of the blast force parallel to the face, potentially doing less damage to the wall rock. In addition to pre-splitting, decreasing the burden, spacing and charge weight in drill holes close to the highwall will also decrease damage to the wall rock. Decreasing the highwall slope angle-Decreasing the highwall slope angle from 90° (vertical) to 70°-80°, especially in areas of known hillseam concentration, could eliminate the hillseam hazard (See Figure 4). "INTRODUCTION In city smoke-abatement work it is customary to require approval of the sizing of fuel-burning equipment. This is to insure that, with reasonable attention, the equipment can be operated essentially smokelessly, having such features as ample furnace volume and air supply. To answer the many inquiries that come to the Bureau of Mines as to what dimensions are acceptable and standard, the requirements of a number of smoke-abatement ordinances have been tabulated.CONCLUSIONSStudy of these tabulations shows that even after many years of fuel-burning practice and experience there is no common standard. Variations in the requirements for the same type of equipment under the same conditions of operation are great. This causes considerable difference in installation costs. Over-all costs being affected, the competitive positions of different types of fuel-burning equipment are also affected. It is apparent that there is a lack of information as to proper dimensions that is commonly accepted as authoritative.DISCUSSIONTable 1 gives the minimum furnace-setting heights required by various cities for mechanical underfeed stokers installed under H.R.T. boilers. Figure 1 shows a typical installation. The dimension given for each case is the distance from the dead plate of the stoker to bottom of boiler shell, unless otherwise noted. As shown in the table, different cities use different size-classification systems; it is not possible to make complete, exact, direct comparisons. Table la gives a comparison for various cities, showing the approximate percentage difference in H.R.T. furnace-setting heights required from those recommended by the Stoker Manufacturers' Association arbitrarily chosen to serve as a basis of comparison. The percentages are approxi¬mate because they were calculated as if all heights as given were measured from the dead plate of the stoker. In two cases a lower height is permitted, in a number of cases the height may be the same, and in a number of cases the height must be greater. The percentage increase goes to 100 in one case. Lack of uniformity is quite evident."

In the U.S. coal mining industry, a large cohort of miners is at or nearing retirement age. As these miners retire, there will be a need to hire and train thousands of new and most likely younger workers. Moreover, a large portion of safety trainers will also require replacement due to retirement. In a speech before the U.S. House of Representatives (2004), Bruce Watzman, Vice President for Safety, Health and Human Resources for the National Mining Association said, “[W]e will need to replace a major portion, approximately 50%, of the underground coal mining workforce within the next 5–7 years.” The large influx of new mine workers, along with the deficit in safety trainers, creates the challenge to provide consistent and effective safety training. Given the expected high turnover of the mining workforce, it is very likely that incoming workers will have much less experience than those leaving the workforce. Unfortunately, inexperienced miners have been shown to incur the highest rate of injuries. The piece of machinery most associated with these injuries is the roof bolting machine, which accounts for 56% of machinery-related injuries in underground coal mining. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has released a new report entitled “Roof Bolting Machine Operators Skills Training for a Walk-Thru Roof Bolter: Trainer’s Guide” (IC 9489). It is designed to help safety trainers develop struc-tured training for new operators of walk-thru bolting machines. This resource will help trainees learn, understand, and apply knowledge and skills. Included in the trainer’s guide are the following tools: [ ] a six-part DVD video series, a skills check survey, talking points, and a complete job training analysis. Also included is an exercise to help trainees learn more about their mine’s roof control plan, as well as a list of supplemental training and reading materials. On-site trainers can modify this guide to fit their particular mine conditions, machines and equipment, and work procedures. The goal of every coal mine safety professional is to increase safety awareness and make mines a safer place to work. The Walk-Thru Bolting Machine Trainer’s Guide will help teach new miners skills to create a safer working environment that will ultimately prevent or reduce on-the-job injuries. Safety trainers can also use the ideas and concepts from this guide to develop their own training skills for the safe operation of other pieces of underground coal mining equipment.

Afghanistan&apos;s mineral industry continued to be dominated by the production and export of natural gas, although several mining and related industrial projects, all under the supervision of Soviet technicians, were in the planning stage in 1982. Afghanistan produced minor quantities of barite, cement, coal, fertilizer materials, iron, and lapis lazuli, all for domestic consumption.2 Large-scale projects being investigated were a copper mine and concentrating plant at Ainak, extensive mining of the Hajigak iron ore deposit near Kabul, construction of an oil refinery at Angot, increasing production and processing of natural gas, and implementing an intensive geologic prospecting and exploration program for areas of mineral potential. Afghanistan&apos;s gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated at $2.76 billion3 and has remained stagnant for the past several years. Total exports in 1982 were estimated at $700 million, only a marginal increase from the 1981 figure of $694 million. Exports of natural gas to the U.S.S.R. earned $385 million in 1982, representing just over one-half of Afghanistan&apos;s total exports. Natural gas revenues were down approximately 11% from the 1981 level, owing primarily to increased antigovernment activity in the northern part of the country.4 About 90% of the country&apos;s natural gas production was exported to the U.S.S.R.5 About 38% of Afghanistan&apos;s development budget had been earmarked for mining and industrial projects in 1982.6

The use of radio signals for underground communications was considered as early as the mid-1920&apos;s [1] - [4] . However, early experiments did not produce promising results with the type of equipment that was available then [5] . With advancements in solid state technology many of the schemes considered impractical in the early days suddenly became practical. The properties of electromagnetic wave behavior in conducting media have been intensively studied by Wait [ 6] and others and can be utilized not only in communication with trapped miners, but also as a means of locating their position. This report deals with the development of portable electromagnetic equipment, powered by the miner&apos;s conventional lamp battery, which can be used to alert surface rescue personnel of the trapped miner Is location. The Westinghouse Georesearch Laboratory (WGL) under BUMINES sponsors hip initially approached the trapped miner location problem using seismic techniques. It was learned from this effort that two serious shortcomings of seismic techniques are (1) the extremely weak signals available on the surface from miner generated hammer blows, requiring long processing times at the surface receiver, and (2) the relatively slow procedure of deploying geophone arrays to sense the seismic uplink signals. By contrast, the electromagnetic techniques have proven much more practical from a deployment time standpoint and in most cases have also proven to be more accurate in determining location. Furthermore, these techniques have been successfully tested using a receiver in a heli- copter for reconnaissance purposes. However, before any electromagnetic location technique can become fully operational, the miners themselves must be equipped with emergency transmitters to be carried with them on each work shift. Consequently, much emphasis has been placed on the development of extremely lightweight transmitting equipment. The performance of some of the electromagnetic location equipment developed by Westinghouse will be described in the following sections. 2.0 Basic Concepts Theoretical concepts for locating magnetic dipoles in the earth have been treated by Wait [ 7] and Olsen [ 8] . Many significant events that began in 1990-91 continued to have a profound impact in the world minerals economy in 1992. The dissolution of the U.S.S.R. and the formal breakup of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA) had significant effects far beyond the geographic boundaries of Europe and Central Eurasia. CMEA&apos;s network of economic interdependence had relied on central planning, a variety of subsidies, and barter agreements that allowed its members to function without the pressures of productivity and efficiency. In the mineral sector, many decisions had been made based on the need for military planning and technology competition with the market economy world. Because of inexpensive oil available through subsidies and technology assistance from the former U.S.S.R., industries III CMEA member countries had been able to function and maintain production to supply minerals and materials required to support the policies of the central plan. In 1992, most of the former CMEA countries decreased their output of many minerals. In some cases, the network of production that had been in place was severed. Political and economic instability, destruction of infrastructure, and new priorities were affecting other mineral industries in the area. In late 1991, 15 independent countries replaced the U.S.S.R. and in early 1991 the former CMEA countries found themselves trying to adjust to the realities of economic independence and the need to compete with former allies for survival. Although 11 of the 15 former Soviet republics joined in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in December 1991, in 1992, individual economic needs exceeded the needs of the Commonwealth III importance. As a result, new mineral trade patterns emerged as minerals were used as a source of much needed capital.
