The mode of propagation of explosions through narrow passages is important for understanding flameproofed equipment employed in mines. Narrow channels have been used in this investigation that connected between a small explosion chamber and a large chamber containing fuel-air mixture. The oxygen index of the mixture in the small chamber was determined which caused an explosion in the outer chamber. Preliminary measurements have already been given in Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 5457 and suggested that) flames do not pass through narrow channels. The hot, burned gases from the explosion in the small chamber, however, are able to ignite the mixture in the large chamber by a process of hot-gas ignition. Systematic measurements are reported in the present paper that cover the influence of channel length and diameter and the properties of the gas mixtures in the large chamber on the transmission of explosions. The influence of such properties as quenching diameter and flame temperature is also discussed. This paper concludes the work on this problem and presents a theory that describes in detail parameters that influence transmission of explosions through narrow channels. This Bureau of Mines paper describes the methods and practices used at the Peck quarry of the Crab Orchard Stone Co., Inc., one of the leading producers of dimension stone in the Crossville, Tenn., area. The product is marketed under the registered trademark "Crab Orchard Stone". Another large producer of stone from the Crossville district sells its product under the registered trademark of "Tenn-Quartz". Both companies, and a number of other companies and individuals who quarry and process dimension stone from the same general geological formation, are members of the Quartzite Producers Association of Tennessee. The salable product is shipped throughout the country for use as architectural building stone. In 1959, 653,008 cubic feet of stone was produced in the Crossville area and was sold for $1,414,405. Terms and descriptions used in this report are those of the quarry and building trades. The offices, pitching sheds, wire saws, railroad siding, and storage areas of the Crab Orchard Stone Co., Inc., are on a side road 0.3 mile north from a point 2.2 miles east of Crossville, Tenn., on U.S. Highway 70. The quarry is on this same side road 2.0 miles south of Highway 70. Crossville is 62 miles west of Knoxville and 65 miles northeast of Chattanooga, Tenn.

During the course of a study of the safety organizations of the various iron mining companies in the Lake Superior district considerable in¬ formation regarding the methods of safety inspection in use was obtained which may be of value to other companies beginning safety work or contemplat¬ ing changes in their methods. A short description of the safety-inspection methods of eleven of these companies is given in this paper, and in the appendix are illustrated a number of forms used for safety inspections by several of the companies. Most of the companies whose methods are described use few forms for formal inspection. The one long form (10) attached which is used for a general in¬ spection by the safety inspector appears to present a good method for enabling the inspector to check all branches of his inspection and to assure himself that everything has been covered. All names of companies have been deleted from this paper and from the forms because the object is to disseminate information of constructive value rather than to point out the methods of particular companies by name.

The cause of many deaths and extensive property damage in coal mines resulting from explosions and mine fires has been directly attributable to electric cable failures (including splice failures). The Federal Bureau of Mines data show that out of 355 underground coal mine fires investigated from July 1952 to January 1960, 103 (29 percent) were directly related to trailing cables. These cable failures resulted in the death of 7 men and injuries to 37 others. These potential hazards have become greater, obviously, through the widespread adoption of mechanized mining methods with electric-driven machinery powered through trailing cables according to Young,4 68.1 percent of the total bituminous and lignite production of the United States was mined underground in 1959. About 85 percent of this production was attained by mechanized loading methods. A large majority of the mines using the hand- loading methods also used equipment with trailing cables such as cutting machines, drills, and gathering locomotives. The problem of minimizing the loss of life, resources, and equipment from cable failures should be of concern to the management of all coal mines. It would be misleading to imply that no consideration has been given to the problem and its associated hazards. Through research cable manufacturers have endeavored to develop trailing cables that will withstand the severe service imposed by underground mining conditions. Technical research groups have undertaken studies for determining improved procedure and materials for field splices. Coal companies have instituted cable maintenance programs with a view toward the reduction of cable failures and consequent improvement in safety and efficiency of operations. A recent survey of 23 vein-type metal mining operations in several western states discloses that some of the more serious deficiencies in ventilation technology are associated with inordinately high levels of mine resistance. This problem has progressively increased over many years of operation (without adequate remedial action) as mines have become extended in depth. Where two shafts form the downcast and upcast airways of a relatively deep mine, the whole of the mine air volume must pass through each shaft in turn. Since at least one of these shafts contains hoisting equipment, structural members are necessary to support the rigid guides and shaft walls. These offer high aerodynamic resistance. In some deep mines, a single shaft of this nature may represent upwards of one-half of the total mine resistance. The second shaft, depending upon its design, may represent an additional one-third of the mine resistance. Therefore, the various working levels throughout the mine contribute only the small remaining amount of the total mine resistance.

The grinding characteristics of lignite in a ball mill were investigated. The variables studied were initial lignite moisture content, degree of in-the-mill drying, and lignite source. The mill tested was a pilot-p1ant-size conical ball mill which had a maximum output of from 80 to 180 lb/hr pulverized product depending on the lignite and test conditions. The capacity of the test mill ranged from 82 to 103 lb/hr depending upon mine source, in pulverization of as-mined lignite with minimum drying, The capabilities of the ball mill could not be correlated to Hardgrove index of the individual lignites or other observed physical properties. Predrying lignite from its 35 to 40 percent raw moisture content to about 10 percent moisture before grinding improved the mill capacity 87 percent, compared to an increase in capacity of 74 percent with in-the-mi11 drying to the same product moisture.

Simple treatment methods, employing the least possible equipment, can sometimes be established for marginal ores and economical results achieved. In continuation of a long-established part of the hydrometallurgical and ore-dressing program of the Reno Station of the Bureau of Mines, typical ores from newly discovered or recently explored mining districts have been investigated. The purpose of such investigations is to encourage the search for and development of mineral resources and particularly to assist in the economical exploitation of low-grade and marginal ores, as well as the conservation and recovery of values in products from former operations that were discarded because of past inability to treat them economically. Several of these investigations have been limited to preliminary tests of samples from prospecting operations, whereas some involved samples of old dumps or tailings piles. The test, work in these cases was not extensive enough to warrant publication as individual reports, but is of considerable interest inasmuch as it indicates the possibilities as well as the limitations of treating the respective materials; and because, inasmuch as the samples were representative of the districts from which they were obtained, this in-formation should be helpful in the future development of these districts. The present report is a compilation of results of brief preliminary tests on oxide ores only, which contained gold and silver and in some cases base metals. The methods of treatment used include gravity concentration, amalgamation, flotation, and cyanidation. For the most part, only standard laboratory procedures were employed. No attempts were made to develop new methods for the low-grade refractory ores in this group of samples if simple treatment was not successful, as the stage of development of the properties did not warrant extensive experimentation on the samples submitted.

U.S. Firm Develops South African Fluorspar. - The Armco Bronne Co. of Middletown, Ohio, plans to spend $27 million to develop a fluorspar mine in the Republic of South Africa, With fluorspar reserves at 20 million metric tons, the project is planned to produce 200,000 tons Per year of fluorspar for export starting in 1983. U.S.S.R. Resumes Sales of Titanium Sponge. - Against a background of increased U.S. titanium sponge supplies, the Soviet Union is offering limited quantities of this commodity to the U.S. market at approximately $10.00 per pound, down from $25.00 per pound last year.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a continuation of statistics pertaining to distribution of petroleum reservoirs (or fields), wells, and production by depth and producing rate classification in the United States. These statistics show the change that has occurred since results of a similar study were published by the Bureau of Mines in 1967. Data are presented in tabular form by State for the 18 principal oil-producing States and by subdivision for the two larges t oil-producing States, Texas and Louisiana, Tabular summations and graphical illustrations are presented for the Nation. The data are classified by 4-barrel-of-oil-per-day rate increments up to 36 barrels and one increment of greater than 36 barrels of oil per day and by 2,000-foot depth increments up to 8,000 feet and one depth increment of greater than 8,000 feet. The overall average producing rates for States and the Nation have been published for many years; although such rates are useful, they are very general descriptions of producibility. A breakdown of production, wells, and reservoirs by various depths and rates and by State or by State subdivision provides a more detailed description of producibility.

Capture airborne coal dust generated by a continuous mining machine to reduce workers? dust exposure and to improve face visibility. Approach Develop a low-profile dust collector system which can be mounted on the boom of a continuous miner. How It Works When coal is mined with a milling head continuous miner, a substantial amount of coal dust (respirable and non-respirable) escapes the dust suppression sprays at the cutter head. This can cause poor visibility around the cutting head and can expose the workers to high levels of respirable dust. A practical means of removing this dust is with a scrubber mounted directly on the mining machine. Continuous remote sensing of methane concentration in underground mines. Approach A methane transducer, developed as a fixed point rib-or face-mounted operating device, measures ambient levels of methane and produces a signal that is proportional to the measured concentration. How It Works The methane transducer, developed under contract for the Bureau of Mines, uses a catalytic-type sensor which will detect methane concentration. The transducer is mounted vertically, as shown. This type of mounting minimizes dust accumulation on the sensing element, which might cause degraded operation. The unit must not be located in an area where water can continuously drip or run on It. The transducer generates an electrical signal proportional to methane concentration at the sensor. A sensor failure output indicates the status of the sensing element A circuit within the methane transducer detects whether the sensing element is shorted or open. A high signal (approximately 8 Vdc) on the failure output Indicates the sensor element is operating In Its normal range. A low output (less than 1 Vdc) indicates an element fault. Before going directly to the analysis, it would be good to summar¬ize explosion-proof container approval methods. Both Magison (52) and Short (84) state that in general practice, the systems are certified for: 1. a rugged enclosure able to withstand an internal explosion but not allow explosively hot gases to escape, and 2. maximum surface temperature, with equipment operating inside, that will not ignite the surrounding atmosphere. Also, testing insures that any material in contact with the container surface will not be ignited by a hot spot. Associated with the first practice, the enclosures are inspected for: 1. a safe flange gap width, 2. a pressure increase during ignition, and 3. an hydrostatic pressure withstand level. The hydrostatic pressure level is almost always determined by a meas¬ured ignition-pressure test and is usually applied to prove the mechan¬ical design to some safety factor. Consequently, explosion-proof enclosure testing includes temper¬ature, permissible flame gap, and pressure. Specifications and prev¬ious research also can be similarly separated even though some interre¬lation exists between the flame gap size and internal enclosure pressure during an explosion. A bench-scale study was made of removing hydrogen sulfide from synthesis gas at elevated pressure by iron oxide impregnated on wood chips. The gas contained 0.02 to 0.06 percent oxygen. The removal of hydrogen sulfide by iron oxide impregnated on wood chips is more efficient at elevated pressure. At constant space velocity, longer periods of operation at 400 p.s.i.g. are possible before the exit gas reaches a given maximum concentration of hydrogen sulfide, compared with 200 p.s.i.g. or atmospheric pressure. In tests at room temperature, 60° C., and 100° C., the most effective removal of hydrogen sulfide was obtained at room temperature and the least effective at 100° C. Dry impregnated wood chips removed only about half as much hydrogen sulfide as chips wetted to a water content of 50 percent.

CARBON-BLACK shipments, which had declined in the latter art of 1953, remained low in 1954 until after settlement of the labor strike that occurred in the rubber industry in July and August. The production of new model automobiles in the last quarter of the year spurred the demand for rubber tires and consequently the demand for carbon black. Total shipments of 1,498 million pounds for the year were 4 percent below 1953.

OUTPUT of carbon black in 1959 increased in all producing States except New Mexico. The national increase was 20 percent. Domestic sales and exports increased 22 percent and 16 percent, respectively, resulting in a 21 percent gain in sales. Sales to the rubber industry, which purchased 95 percent of the domestic output of carbon black, increased 23 percent. Sales to all other major consumers also increased. In small-scale blasting experiments conducted in the Bureau of Mines laboratory, small charges were used to produce craters in blocks of concrete mortar. The results are compared with larger scale experiments of other research workers, and the comparison demonstrates the similarity of the results obtained and indicates that small-scale blasting should be a useful tool for predicting large-scale blasting effects. INTRODUCTION The purpose at this investigation was to conduct blasting experiments in mortar in the laboratory and then, by comparing the results with those from larger scale field blasts in rock to determine to what extent, if any, the laboratory results resemble those in the field. The work described herein was the initial phase of a project aimed at evaluating small-scale blasting as a tool for use in improving blasting techniques. It is evident from the stand-point of control and cost that small-scale blasting would be valuable in the study of rock fragmentation by blasting in mines and quarries, if the extrapolation is valid.

Operation of the Bureau of Mines raw refuse continuous separation pilot plant is described, including modifications made to plant equipment for improved performance. Products recovered from refuse, many of which have been evaluated by other laboratories and private firms, are discussed. Sampling procedures used in the pilot plant and detailed data obtained from processing refuse from 13 municipalities are presented in appendixes. Fuel evaluations made on combustible fractions of refuse from the various municipalities are also presented. Information and data obtained at the pilot plant have been used to assist many municipalities in solving their urban refuse problems.
