Operating mine haulage trucks near the crest of stockpiles and waste dumps is a potentially hazardous practice often resulting in a localized slope failure and a dump point accident. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a computer code (INSLOPE3) based on the kinematic method of limit analysis which determines an admissible truck weight (upper bound value) for varying distances from the slope edge. The program considers the material strength parameters, slope geometry, and inertial forces induced by vehicle braking. The program can be utilized to assist in the determination of safe operating distances for a haulage truck from a slope edge, the development of safe vehicle operating procedures, and the admissible weight for a static concentrated loading near the crest of an otherwise stable slope. This report provides information on the use of INSLOPE3, interpretation of the results for mining applications, and instructions for acquiring a copy of the software.

Component failures in the electrical control circuits of mining machines account for a large percentage of the total downtime of the machine, Once a failure has occurred it is always a tedious and usually a time-consuming task to locate the failed component. Moreover, the pressure to quickly locate the cause of a delay can lead to compromises in safety. Thus an onboard diagnostic system, essential for an automated machine, would be a very useful addition to existing machines. This report details U.S. Bureau of Mines development of a generic procedure for synthesizing diagnostic systems for electrical-control-circuit failures in mining machinery. A continuous mining machine is used as the testbed to illustrate the application of the developed methodology. Substantive differences among mining machine control circuits made it impossible to achieve a generic diagnostic system, but a generic approach for the synthesis of the diagnostic system was possible. As the research progressed, it became apparent that an algorithmic approach was better than an expert-system-based implementation. A prototype system was constructed and used to evaluate the diagnostic system. Prototype implementation issues are also examined.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a laboratory investigation designed to evaluate the stress and deformation characteristics of fully grouted roof bolts subjected to various magnitudes of end loadings. The experiment and subsequent analysis were completed, utilizing axial deformation data obtained -ultrasonically from forty-one 4-ft, grade 40 roof bolts, with a total of 132 measurement locations along the lengths of the bolts. The ultrasonic measurement instrumentation used in this investigation allowed for elongation measurements without requiring extensive bolt modifications. The results indicate that approximately 39 pct o{ the applied end load dissipated within the first 3.4 in of the bolts. However, only 3 pct of the applied load was realized beyond 28 in of the grout column. Data are presented individually for every 6-in increment of bolt length, and analysis was performed using statistical, nonlinear equations developed for 5,000 and 8,000 lb loading conditions.

Brazil's gross domestic product (GDP) grew only slightly in 1988 to $277 billion at current prices.2 The growth rate was the smallest registered since 1983, when the rate was minus 2.8%. The economy's performance was strongly influenced by a 2% to 3% decrease in industrial production and civil construction. The mineral industry, however, countered the downward trend in the industrial sector and grew a modest 1.4%. In November, Brazil adopted a new Constitution that placed significant restrictions on foreign investment in the mineral industries. Under certain provisions of the new Constitution, foreign companies were prohibited from establishing new mining ventures in Brazil as sole or majority owners. They could now enter the mineral industry only as minority shareholders with Brazilian partners. Foreign companies already established in Brazil had a 4-year grace period to find majority Brazilian partners, or to establish vertically integrated processing operations (mining, processing, smelting, and refining). The new Constitution also prohibited foreign risk contracts for petroleum exploration.

The National Safety Competition conducted by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, is held each year for the purpose of promoting safety in the mineral industries of the United States. Since the program was inaugurated in 1925, twenty-three safety competitions have been held. This publication is a report of the results of the contests held in 1944, 1945, 1946, and 1947. The names of plants that have been awarded "Sentinels of Safety" trophies and Certificates of Achievement in Safety dur- ing these years, together with a summary of their achievements in injury prevention, are listed. Statistical data covering the injury experience of all plants entered in the annual contests also are included in this publi- cation. The injury statistics of these plants, arranged in the six groups of the competition, are the only data on injury severity at mineral operations available to the Bureau of Mines. Interest in the National Safety Competition has increased steadily. The number of participating plants has increased from 210 in 1925, the first year of the competition, to the record number of 494 in 1946. The widening scope of the competition means that a steadily increasing number of the mines and quarries in the United States are participating in a program that will supplement their other activities in promoting safety. Safety competitions have long been recognized as instrumental in stimulating and holding the interest of employees and officials in accident-prevention work. During the years covered by this report, conditions in the mineral industries of the United States were hardly conducive to setting records in accident prevention. During the war years, handicaps were especially severe- loss of skilled employees to the armed forces or to higher-wage war industries, greater production by a smaller force of workers, relatively high rates of labor turn-over, the longer workday in effect through 1944 and 1945, and difficulties in obtaining repairs and replacement for badly worn machinery. Even the immediate postwar period has brought no abatement of the tremendous pressure upon the mineral industries for greater production. Although there was a decrease of 18 in 1947 from the record enrollment in 1946, these oper- ations worked 160,525,025 man-hours, the greatest number of man-hours of exposure to mining hazards in any year of the contest except 1942. Despite the accelerated pace at which the mineral industry worked during the 4 years covered by this report, participants in the National Safety Competition have achieved creditable performances in the promotion of safety. In fact, the injury-severity rate in the enrolled plants in the 1947 contest was 7.315 days for each thousand man-hours worked, the lowest by far in the history of the National Safety Competition. The injury-frequency rate of 42.155 for each million man-hours of exposure to mine hazards in 1947 marks a favorable trend downward from the rate of 50.577 in 1946, which was the

This report covers investigations of the Bureau of Mines for the period of June 15, 1952, to June 15, 1953, on a research project for the Materials Laboratory, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio. The primary purpose of this investigation was to make high-purity chromium-base alloys having room-temperature ductility and high-temperature strength. The Nonferrous Metals Branch of the Bureau of Mines, Albany, Oreg., has, during the past 7 years, developed on a laboratory scale a hydrogen treatment method for making high-purity chromium that can be fabricated into thin sheet and wire. This material can be bent at room temperature. The object of this investigation was to use this material to develop improved chromium-rich alloys for high-temperature uses.

This paper is one of a series dealing with mining methods and costs, prepared and published under the sponsorship of the United States Bureau of Mines and made possible through the cooperation f many mining companies in the United States and foreign countries. The preparation of this paper follows a field study of top-slice mining during which the author visited and discussed with operating officials a large number of iron mines in the Lake Superior region. During this study special note was made of changes in top-slicing practice during the past decade, prior to which the author had acquired several years experience with the method through active connection with a number of mines employing top slicing.

Experiments do provide evidence that the actions of unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of silicotic processes. This paper summarizes literature on chemical properties of silica surface, and the effect of particle size on silica toxicity. This paper also discusses the ways in which silica dusts are thought to interact with the cell membrane, with emphasis on freshness, hydrogen bonding, and free-radical interactions.INTRODUCTIONSilicosis is a debilitating pulmonary disease that afflicts persons (miners, foundry workers, ceramic workers, heavy construction workers, etc.) who chronically inhale silica-containing dusts (Schepers, 1960; Silicosis and Silicate Disease Committee, 1988). Since silica is second only to oxygen in weight percentage of the earth's crust (about 28%) and is found in an enormous diversity of minerals, it is natural that silicosis is one of the major industrial health hazards all over the world. Although silicosis has. been studied extensively, the mechanism by which the dusts exert their toxic actions on cells and the processes by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still poorly understood. The biological characteristics of the dusts are largely unknown, although it is suggested that the dust size, shape, surface charge, roughness, surface chemical composition, trace metal content, and crystallinity; dose of silica in the ambient air of the workplace; duration of exposure; genetic variation in exposed subjects; personal respiratory patterns; and presence of any coexisting disease (such as tuberculosis or rheumatoid arthritis) all influence the expression of silicosis (Koskinen et al., 1983; Noweir et al., 1980; Raask and Schilling, 1980; Reiser and Last, 1979; Thorne et al., 1985; Wolff et al., 1981). The actual biochemical mechanisms through which these factors operate are still unclear. However, the experiments do provide evidence that the actions of certain unique properties of silica surface on the cell membrane are the starting point of the silicotic process (Allison et al., 1966; Allison and Harrow, 1971; Bateman et al., 1982; Marks, 1957; Parazzi et al., 1968; Reiser and Last, 1979; Summerton et al., 1977). "The Bureau of Mines conducted research on the flocculation of various minerals with insoluble cross-linked starch xanthate (ISX) to determine its potential as a beneficiation technique for low-grade, highly disseminated ores and for selective desliming. Covellite, chalcocite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, bornite, sphalerite, galena, and molybdenite fines flocculate with ISX. Floc formation, floc size, and settling rate are dependent on pH, with the pH dependence differing for each mineral. Quartz is not flocculated by ISX. Experiments to obtain selective flocculation of sulfides from quartz were attempted. Good selectivity was only obtained for the bornite-quartz system. Post flocculation separations resulted in flocculated bornite in grades as high as 92 pct. Evidence is presented that the flocculation of many of the sulfide minerals with ISX may involve covalent bonding of the xanthate group to lattice metal site(s). INTRODUCTIONBecause of the increasing interest in selective flocculation as a beneficiation technique for low-grade, highly disseminated ores and for selective desliming, the Bureau of Mines has been investigating the flocculation behavior of several cross-linked starch derivatives containing chelating groups. This report dis cusses the flocculation of sulfide mineral fines by insoluble cross-linked starch xanthate (ISX).Polymeric materials such as ISX, which contain a chelating group of known re¬activity towards specific mineral surfaces, were first proposed by Slater, Clark, and Kitchener (1), 3 Kitchener (2), and Attia and Kitchener (3) as selective flocculants for mineral fines with particle aggregation possible through a bridging mechanism. ISX appeared to be attractive as a sulfide mineral flocculant because (1) alkyl xanthates are known to react selectively with sulfide minerals"

Two methods were tested for separating sulfur compounds in certain petroleum fractions into types . Such separation is preliminary to identifying the compounds . Each method involved extraction of sulfides from petroleum sulfur concentrates . In the first method , the sulfur concentrate was reacted with methyl - ptoluenesulfonate to form sulfonium compounds from which unreacted portions of the sample were removed by washing with solvent . The sulfides then were recovered by heating the sulfonium compounds with anhydrous triethanolamine . The second method consisted of passing anhydrous hydrogen iodide into a n-butane solution of the sample cooled in dry ice , whereupon the hydrogen iodide adducted with the sulfides to form sulfonium compounds . These adducts separated as crystalline solids or , more frequently , as glassy viscous liquids . The sulfide was regenerated by adding water to the filtered sulfonium compound and was recovered by steam distillation or by extraction with pentane . These methods have been evaluated , using individual pure sulfur compounds and blends of sulfur compounds . They also have been applied successfully to separating sulfides from sulfur concentrates derived from petroleum fractions .

"This work was begun in l928, with the cooperation of the American, Gas Association, and the Association contributed financial aid for that year and for the 4 years following. In 1933 financial aid was discontinued, but the Advisory Committee, under the able, Chairmanship of J. S. Haug, has continued to function through the years to the present date. Mr. Haug's annual reports have been published in the Proceedings of the American Gas Association. The purpose of this paper is to bring the index of coals tested by the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association (EM-AGA) method up to date, to discuss development of auxiliary tests, and to outiline the uses to which the methods have been put in promoting the war effort.COALS TESTEDThe test methods developed with the advice of the Advisory Committee had been applied to 66 coals up to 1942, and an index giving the serial number, origin, and analyses of these coals was published as Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 637. Since this paper was published, 20 additional coals have been tested; the source and analyses of these coals are given in table 1. The table also refers to publications that have been issued. Complete series of tests at high, medium, and low temperatures,have been made on most of these coals, and blending tests with 20 and 30 30 percent of low-volatile coals have also been made at 900°C.; however a few low- and medium-volatile coals (60, 70, 74, 79, and 80) were bested,at high temperatures only. Those coals were mined in eastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas. The test work included low- and high-temperature assay tests, petrorraphic analyses, and plasticity tests since its inception; and for the last 20 coals of the series, expansion and oxidation tests have been made where applicable."

The Bureau of Mines studied the effect of temperature upon the reduction of chromite by carbon and the relative reducibility of chromites as a function of their composition. Ferric oxide was also studied to provide comparative data. Pellets weighing approximately 1 gram and containing 70 percent ferric oxide, chromic oxide, or chromite and 30 percent graphite were subjected to closely controlled temperatures under a flow of argon for 15 minutes. The amount of CO and CO2 evolved was measured, and the reduced sample was analyzed by X-ray diffraction techniques. The reduction of Fe2O3 was studied over a temperature range of 600° to 1,400° C, while the reduction of Cr2O5 and chromite was conducted from 9000 to 1,621° C. The temperature above which appreciable reduction of Cr203 by graphite took place was 1,125° C. The temperature at which significant reduction started for three of the four chromite samples was approximately the same, indicating that there was concurrent reduction of iron and chromium oxides in the chromite mineral rather than selective reduction of iron oxides followed by reduction of chromic oxide. Rhodesian chromite appeared to dissociate at a lower temperature with concurrent reduction of iron. Based on the temperature at Which chromite was 50 percent reduced in 15 minutes, Transvaal chromite reduced most easily, followed by Mouat, then by Kampersian, and finally by Rhodesian DFC material. Statistical analysis of test results indicated that the ferric iron content of chromites affects their reduction behavior more than any other constituent.

"The purpose of the investigation described herein was to determine how closely different laboratories can check one another in making determinations of fusibility of coal ash with the De Graaf electric coal-ash fusion furnace: how well duplicate determinations by the same laboratory will check, and how the results with the De Graaf furnace compare with those of the standard gas-furnace method of the American Society for Testing Materials.4Thanks are due the following laboratories who cooperated in this study by making fusibility tests with the Do Graaf electric coal-ash fusion apparatus: J. Fieldner, chief engineer, Experiment Stations Division of the Bureau of Mines.Routine determinations of the fusibility of coal ash are made in the laboratories of the United States Bureau of Mines by the gas-furnace method. This method was standardized after considerable experimentation5 on the nature of the fusion of coal ash and the various factors which affect its determination. The method was subsequently adopted by the American Society for Testing Materials as one of its standard tests."

The Rogan-Mallery tin property is in the foothills on the south slope of the Tehachapi Mountains, Kern County, Calif. It was first visited by the senior author in August 1942, and exploration by means of trenching and diamond drilling began in May 1944 and was concluded in August of the same year. Cassiterite, associated with iron-rich gossan, occurs in a limestone roof pendant at places near or at its contact with the underlying granitic rocks. The cassiterite grain sizes range from 20 mesh to 150 mesh. Surface and diamond-drill samples showed tin ranging from traces up to 122.6 pounds per ton. Exploration by the Bureau of Mines included 2,100 cubic yards of trenching and the drilling of 11 diamond drill holes totaling 1,000 feet. Dana Hogan, president of the Rogan Petroleum Co. of Los Angeles, Calif.) brought these projects to the attention of the Bureau of Mines in July 1942, and the following month a Bureau engineer made a preliminary examination in company with Hillard Mallery, of 408 Ruby Street, Redondo Beach, Calif., the man who discovered them.

In undermined urban areas, new solutions to subsidence problems are being sought. The Bureau of Mines is investigating a hydraulic backfilling technique whereby fill material is pumped as a slurry through a closed system and widely distributed in inaccessible mine workings from a single borehole. A full-scale demonstration was completed in 1973 in Scranton, Pa., which is underlain by abandoned anthracite mines in several coalbeds superposed one above another. A 30-acre residential area was stabilized by injecting about 450,000 cubic yards of crushed mine refuse into two coalbeds through five injection boreholes. Nearly 200,000 cubic yards was injected through one borehole from which the material moved into the mine workings on all sides; the injected material reached a maximum lateral distance of 640 feet and filled mine openings from floor to roof. In the gravity-feed method formerly used to backfill inaccessible mine workings, quantities of fill injected per borehole averaged about 300 cubic yards. The gravity-feed method required many closely spaced injection holes and provided incomplete filling. The new method, designed for inundated mines, proved successful also in mine workings about mine-water pool level. Distribution of slurry through a buried pipeline minimized disturbance to the community.

"The basic population balance models for agglomeration processes are reviewed and procedures are described for extending their applicability to systems with size-dependent rate constants and to the formation and growth of porous agglomerates from rigid, solid particles. Simplified procedures for the further extension of the models to include simultaneous agglomerate growth and breakage arc also described. IntroductionThe association of small particles into clusters or agglomerates is a significant factor in many facets of particle processing. Agglomeration processes are widely used to facilitate handling, storage and utilization of fine powders. Processes such as coagulation or flocculation are used to aid solid-fluid separation in dispersed particulate systems. Agglomeration also occurs as an accompaniment, often unwanted, to other particulate processing operations such as fine grinding, mixing and blending, transport and flow.Reliable agglomeration models are needed for improved understanding of the processes in general and of the complex role of numerous, interacting variables as well as for direct application to the design and control of industrial processes such as flocculation, granulation and pelletization. Ideally, the models should account for the primary forces responsible for agglomerate ·formation and growth, the effects of external forces on process dynamics, the development of agglomerate structure and its role in the process itself, and the effects of concurrent processes such as structure modification (e.g. compaction) and agglomerate breakage or degradation.In its most general form, the process of agglomeration involves taking discrete, independent particles, bringing them into contact with one another, promoting (or allowing) interparticle adhesion to occur and then causing structure rearrangement, usually under the action of external forces. The relative importance of these steps varies with the nature of the particulate system being agglomerated and with the kinds of agglomerates being produced. Coagulation or flocculation of particles dispersed in fluids is generally dominated by the contact and adhesion steps. In the granulation of powders, on the other hand, particles are already in contact so that structure rearrangement is the principal step."

"INTRODUCTION According to the Roane Iron Co. of Rockwood, Tenn., the Chamberlain. Barnardville iron deposit produced approximately three million tons of iron ore previous to 1928. The deposit is divided into two synclinal bodies termed the north and south synclines. Production has come from the northern extremities of both bodies.The need for developing additional iron-ore reserves during the war prompted the Bureau of Mines to initiate an exploratory program on the Chamberlain-Barnardville deposit in February 1944, which continued until December 1944.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. "INTRODUCTION Nickel is one of the seven metals designated as strategic by the Army and Navy Munitions Board in 1939, when Congress appropriated funds for the investigation of domestic sources of supply of war minerals. The Mertic nickel lode at Punter Bay, Admiralty Island, Alaska, owned by the Admiralty Alaska Gold Mining Co., was investigated as part of this program.During the period 1919 to 1928, the property was examined the following engineers; L. S. Robe, W. E. Dunkic and S.E. Conbest of the Alaska Treadwell Cr., A, F. Buddington of the Federal Geological Survey, and H. C. Boydell. Henry M. Eakin, in the capacity of consulting geologist, examined the deposit in 1928 and later reviewed data resulting; from exploration recommended by him. In 1936, A. Hoogbom, of the Geological Survey of Sweden, made a very brief report on the deposit based upon information furnished by J. S. Pokovich.A comprehensive study by the Geological Survey of the Punter Bay area, including the Mertic lode, was made during the field season of 1937, with brief examinations in 1936 and 1938. 4/Miyaki, representing the Mitsubishi Company, visited the property in 1937 and in the course of his examination took six samples. G. W. Powel examined the deposit in 1937 and took five samples in the Mertie adit.This report describes the results of the Bureau's work and gives information collected from other sources."

Studies were conducted by the Bureau of Mines to develop a method for fabricating Sm-Co permanent magnets. This method consisted of arc-melting, crushing and grinding the alloy, alining and pressing the powder, and sintering the green compacts. Results indicated that the optimum composition was 36.7±0.3 weight-percent Sm and 63.3±0.3 weight-percent Co. This composition was obtained by blending together Sm2C07 and SmCo5. The maximum values exper¬imentally obtained were MHC = 27.4 kOe, BHc = 7,510 Oe, Br = 7,810 G, and (BH)max = 15.1 MGOe. The optimum sintering temperatures and grinding times for maximum MHc and (BH)max were determined. Lowering the grinding temperature from 0° C to -60° C resulted in a significant increase of magnetic properties.
