This Bureau of Mines report presents a method for the computer solution of the equilibrium compositions of any complex, multiphase, chemical system for which appropriate thermodynamic data are available. The method describes in detail the computation of systems in which solid or liquid species can form by heterogeneous chemical reactions where these species do not occur in any equilibrium equations. Also described are the calculation of phases formed by condensation (pure or solutions) and the inclusion of other system restrictions such as electroneutrality. The method is being used to compute the equilibrium composition of mixtures of an electrically conductive plasma and a liquid slag phase arising from the high-temperature combustion of coal for magnetohydrodynamic power generation. These mixtures can contain up to 65 species including gases, liquids, free electrons, and ions.

Manipulation of hand-held objects in 3D space is a complex task. Understanding how individual digits interact with a hand-held object provides helpful information for hand tool designers, researchers, clinicians, and occupational therapists. At the object-digit interface, the contact mechanics can be represented by three force and three torque components. Six-component force/torque transducers can register all the three forces and three torques at the digit-object interface, and therefore are advantageous in the study of manipulation mechanics. The large number of force and torque signals from multiple force/torque transducers are difficult to interpret and therefore making experimental research of manipulation a challenging task. The purpose of this study was to develop a 3D visualization tool for the investigation of the contact mechanics at the object-digit interfaces during manipulation tasks. Methods A 3D stick-figure hand model was created based on digitized 23 anatomical landmarks of the hand. Five miniature 6-component force/torque transducers (4 × Nano17 for the fingers, 1 × Mini40 for the thumb, ATI Industrial Automation, NC) were used to record force and torque data at the tips of individual digits. Thirty channels of force/torque signals from the transducers were collected by a 16-bit analogue-digital converter (PCI-6031, National Instrument, Austin, TX) installed in a computer. The transducers were mounted on a custom-made rectangular aluminum handle for object manipulation. Coordinate frames were established at each transducer, on the handle, and at the base of the MicroScribe digitizer. To visualize the force vectors at the digit-tips, the coordinates of the hand landmarks in the MicroScribe coordinate frame and the force vectors in local transducer coordinate frames were transformed to a common coordinate frame defined on the handle. One healthy right-handed, male subject participated in the experimental study. During the tests, the participant sat in a chair by a testing table. The forearm was strapped to an arm holder in neutral rotation position. The instrumented handle was fixed on the testing table by a C-clamp through an adapting plate. With the hand of the subject gripped on the instrumental handle, the landmarks of the instrumented handle and the transducers, as well as the anatomical landmarks of the hand were digitized using the MicroScribe digitizer for the purpose of coordinate frame establishment and transformation as described above. The subject performed three different maximum isometric voluntary contraction tasks: (1) grasping, (2) rotating in pronation, and (3) lifting. Results The 3D hand model and representative force vector clusters in a single trial of grasping, rotating, and lifting tasks are shown in Figure 1. This paper describing the mining practice at the Pecos mine of the American Metal Co. of New Mexico, a subsidiary of the American Metal Co., Ltd., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, practices, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. The mine is producing about 18,000 tons per month of zinc-lead-copper ore, chiefly by the square-set and cut-and-fill methods. Costs are given for 1927, 1928, and 1929, the whole producing life of the mine to date.

This report3/ gives the results of a reconnaissance of mining districts in Eureka County, Nevada, made from September 25 to October 20 and from October 27 to November 5, 1577. During this time, virtually all the districts were visited and many data obtained on active and inactive properties. This report covers the locations of the various districts, geological background, ownership and brief descriptions of mines and prospects, information on past and current operations, and, other data likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. From the viewpoint of past production in the county, the silver-lead-gold deposits at Eureka have been tie most important, followed by the silver deposits at Cortez and Mineral Hill. The period of greatest activity in the foregoing districts was from 1870 to 1990, when Eureka was one of the principal mining areas in Nevada; the production of lead was sufficient to affect its price in all the commercial centers of the world. Eureka also merits the distinction of being the birthplace of the silver-lead smelting industry in the United States.

'This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines study to identify the causes of self-heating events beneath the floor of a deep underground coal mine. Mine samples from both heated and unheated areas were examined by various techniques, including visual, microscopic, thermal, chemical, and instrumental tests. The combined results led to the conclusion that pyrite (FeS2) oxidation was the prime cause of the beatings. However, adiabatic oven tests of selected samples did not indicate the effect of the pyrite on the self-heating process, probably because of the experimental conditions. A fast, simple procedure to assess the concentration of pyrite in the mine samples was developed, g the reactivity of the sample with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2).

The principal purpose of this study was the development of an engineering and economic model of a hypothetical large-scale open pit gold mining operation. The guiding concept in developing the model was the idea that, through study of a number of such models, it would be possible to evaluate a mineral property and to make reasonable estimates of the benefits to be derived from research in mining and metallurgy. The model by use of a computer is able to produce results easily and quickly when cost factors are varied. Cost factors may be varied as a result of assumptions of improved technology or of assumptions of assuming different approaches or methods to accomplish a particular segment of the mining or processing operation. The discounted cash flow rate of return was used to measure the effect of changes in costs or expected revenue. In this study, assumptions based on past processing practices were made in an effort to reduce costs of processing the ore These assumptions were: (1) Eliminating the low-grade cyanide circuit; (2) reducing the quantity of material to be processed by screening after crushing; and (3) using a combination of assumptions (1) and (2). All three assumptions resulted in reduced capital investment and operating cost that caused substantial increases in the rate of return.

The material for this paper was collected for the most part by C. H. Beal during the years 1916, 1917, and 1918. Many of the conclusions reached in regard to the life of oil wells have already been published by the Bureau of Mines 1 but those presented in this paper deal particularly with the theoretical aspects of oil production. The report discusses some of the fundamental factors governing oil production, taking up first the conditions affecting the. amount of oil in the oil sand, then those factors that control the rate of production of oil wells, and then discusses several related problems, most of which deal particularly with the effect of the production of one well on that of another.

In 1965 the Western phosphate industry ranked third after Florida and Tennessee in total mine and marketable production of phosphate rock and phosphate rock products. It has become an important regional industry and, since the close of World War II, it has become important in the national phosphate economy. This report includes an evaluation of the trends and outlook for the Western phosphate industry through 1975 as part of the Bureau's program to determine the rate at which the Nation's mineral resources are being utilized. The first part of this report is concerned with the relationship between the Western phosphate industry and that of the United States and the world. It describes the principal phosphate deposits and discusses production, export, and import of phosphate rock and marketable products. The second part of the report is concerned with the Western phosphate industry and discusses trends and outlook through 1975. Projections for the utilization of phosphate rock, phosphate fertilizers, and elemental phosphorus have been developed and extended through 1975 in an effort to provide data and information pertaining to the rate of depletion of the Nation's phosphate resources.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated tthhee feasibility of substituting platinum- coated metals for bulk platinum shapes as a means for conserving platinum . Platinum coatings were prepared using four different methods of electrodeposition , then tested and evaluated . In order for platinum coatings to be useful in process environments , they must be thick , adherent , stress - free , and pore - free . The Bureau evaluated direct - current , current reversal , cathode shielding , and pulsed- current plating techniques for producing a pore-free platinum electrodeposit from a molten cyanide bath . Aqueous corrosion tests of Fe - 10Cr substrates coated with approximately 25 μm of platinum showed that pulse plating yielded the most corrosion- resistant and , hence , the most pore -free coatings . The morphology of coating cross sections was in all cases columnar . The average grain size of pulse -plated deposits was independent of thickness , while all other plating techniques produced grains that increased in size as the coatings became thicker . It is believed that the constant grain size in the pulse - plated deposits resulted from better mass transport during the electrodeposition .

Unrecognized roof beam failures resulted in 69% of the falls of ground injuries occurring in underground U.S. stone mines from 1990 to 1996. Field investigations at 45 underground stone mines suggest that excessive beam sag or deflection is the principal unstable roof behavior characteristics associated with miner injuries. Laminated roof structures, common in most underground stone mines, allow the immediate roof to separate into distinct beams. The timely determination of roof beam deflection could provide stone miners with advanced knowledge of potentially hazardous roof. Existing methods to assess roof conditions consist of observational and monitoring techniques. Observational techniques include open drillholes, sounding, wedging, and borescopes. Monitoring techniques include scratch tools, extensometers, telltales, Miners Helpers, and Guardian Angels'. Miners have difficulty utilizing these techniques because roof beams are located an average of 8 m (26.5 ft) above the miner's head in environments that are dark, dusty and noisy and these deflections are measured in millimeters of movement. To help mitigate the potential for falls of ground injuries to underground stone miners, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed the Roof Monitoring Safety System (RMSS) to aid in monitoring dangerous levels of roof beam deflection. If enough site-specific information is collected and placed on highly visible maps, individual mining operations could establish general guidelines for responding to specific roof beam deflection occurrences. This would help in implementing a pro-active, comprehensive roof control plan for reducing falls of ground injuries.

This publication by the Federal Bureau of Mines contains the free-swelling indexes for 2,812 samples of coal received from January 26, 1948, to July 15, 1957, and the Hardgrove grindability indexes for 2,339 samples of coal received from June 23, 1947, to July 15, 1957. These data consist of the origin of the sample, bed name, and analysis. Summaries show the high, low, and average values for each bed. The free-swelling index is a relative measure of the caking properties of a coal when burned on a grate, and the Hardgrove grindability index is used to estimate the relative ease of grinding coals. Development and standardization of these test procedures were at a much later date than those for the more familiar tests, such as proximate and ultimate analyses and calorific value determinations. The newer tests are valuable in supplying supplemental information, particularly for assisting in evaluating coals used in certain types of combustion processes.4/ Data from such tests are important to designers of burning equipment, operating engineers, and purchasing agents. Data from these newer tests are scarce and scattered through a number of publications. Special projects were started to determine the free-swelling and grindability indexes, in addition to the regular analyses on the tipple samples collected by Bureau engineers. Since the start of these special projects, all the coal fields of commercial importance have been adequately covered in the sampling program.

Mineral raw materials produced in California, other States, and foreign countries were purchased for consumption in quantities valued at over $60 million at 800 of the 1,200 chemical plants operating in California in 1960, according to questionnaires completed by company officials. These and other data received from mineral consumers, producers, dealers, and Government agencies formed the basis for this the first of a series of reports designed to present the intricate features and relationships controlling mineral raw material supply and demand in California industries. The results of this study indicated certain changes in use patterns of minerals in chemica 1 manufacturing; a shift in requirements from metals to nonmeta ls, from inorganics to organics, from natura 1 to synthet ic materia ls , and from distant to local sources of supply.

This report is the 18th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations. The previous 17 reports have covered fiscal years, but this report covers not only the fiscal year from July 1, 1952, to June 30, 1953, but also July through December 1953, to bring the report to a calendar-year basis. Most of the material in this report relates to publications issued during the reporting period, Some work is mentioned briefly on which publications have not yet been issued or on which data are riot expected to be published, for security or other reasons, and in a few instances publications issues before the reporting period but not included in the previous report are mentioned.3/ Further details on the published work described herein may be found by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes. During the reporting period, the Bureau directed its research and technologic work on coal toward developing end encouraging increased conservation and more efficient use of our mineral fuel resources through more efficient and safer mining methods and improved methods of preparing and utilizing these fuels. Some significant advances, particularly in coal-mine safety, mining methods, and development and utilization of low-rank coma have been made.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health method 7703 is a portable field procedure for the analysis of workplace air filter samples for hexavalent chromium (CrVI) content immediately after the samples are collected. The field method prescribes CrVI extraction from air filter samples with an ammonium sulfate/ammonium hydroxide extraction buffer using ultrasonic extraction (UE). Strong anion-exchange solidphase extraction (SAE-SPE) is then used to separate CrVI from trivalent chromium and other interferences. Portable spectrophotometric measurement of CrVI is then conducted using the 1,5-diphenylcarbazide (DPC) method. However, it has been found that the ammonium extraction buffer does not dequately bring insoluble CrVI compounds into solution during the UE process. Thus, it was deemed necessary to modify the field method so that it would provide acceptable recoveries for insoluble CrVI compounds. To this end, a more alkaline extraction solution—sodium carbonate/sodium bicarbonate buffer—was investigated. The modified procedure using the highly alkaline extraction solution was demonstrated to be compatible with SAE-SPE cartridges when determining insoluble CrVI in air filter samples. It was found that the carbonate/bicarbonate buffer was equally effective for complete dissolution of both insoluble and soluble forms of CrVI. Furthermore, the modified procedure met desired performance criteria established for air sampling and analytical methods. In situ uranium mining offers the advantages of minimal environmental disturbance, low capital and operating costs, and reduced mining development time. It is becoming an increasingly attractive mining method for the recovery of uranium from secondary ore deposits. In order to better understand the process, a laboratory technique was developed and used to study and simulate both the chemical and physical phenomena occurring in ore bodies during in situ leaching. The laboratory simulation technique has been used to determine effects of leaching variables on permeability uranium recovery, and post-leach aquifer restoration. This report describes the simulation system and testing procedure in sufficient detail to allow the construction of the system, and to perform the desired leaching tests. With construction of such a system, in situ leaching of a given ore using various leach conditions can be evaluated relatively rapidly in the laboratory. Not only could optimum leach conditions be selected for existing ore bodies, but also exploitation of new ore bodies could be accelerated.

Lime is used extensively in the various industries. The National Lime Association in an excellent and recent bulletin lists 23 important in- dustries in which lime plays a vital role; and it thereby justifies the statement that "Lime is one of the most versatile and widely used reagents in the chemical and industrial world." There is, however, one application of this "universal" reagent which has not been mentioned. It is the use of lime in the flotation of ores. An appreciable percentage of the lime produc- tion is consumed by ore-dressing plants. The uses of lime throughout all the industries are more or less re- lated, but "lime" is a broad term; the varieties of lime are more mumerous than the limestones from which it is made, and its use involves a complicated technique. The interrelated application and growing importance of lime in flotation warrant this additional publication on the various "limes," with emphasis on those uses related to the function of lime in flotation. ཁྐྲ་ Lime in water treatment, cyaniding, and amalgamating will be men- tioned, after which its use in flotation will be taken up. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the recovery of tin and silver from the Coal Creek deposit in the Talkeetna Mountains, AK. Approximately 5 million st of reserves grading 0.2 pct Sn with silver credits of 0.2 tr oz/st have been delineated by drilling. A 10-to 25-pct Sn gravity concentrate was produced by treating the minus 20-mesh ore with a spiral, then regrinding to minus 65 mesh and tabling. Sulfide contamination in the gravity concentrate was as high as 60 pet. Sulfide flotation of this concentrate produced tailings containing 40 to 50 pet Sn. Overall recovery was 76 pct for tin but only 5 to 10 pct for silver because of losses during sulfide flotation. Other methods tested to clean the concentrate included cassiterite flotation, gangue flotation, nitric acid leaching, and wet and dry magnetic separation. Tin beneficiation tests on the minus 325-mesh fraction included cassiterite flotation, vanning, sulfide flotation, and fuming. The bench-scale and locked-cycle tests were used to estimate the mass flows for a 1,000-st/d plant.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies to determine the feasibility of chlorine-oxygen leaching for treating low-grade zinc sul-fide flotation concentrates. Recovery of zinc sulfides by flotation from complex fine-grained sulfide ores is substantially higher in low-grade bulk sulfide concentrates than in the high-grade cleaned concen-trates required for smelter feed. However, there is no commercial process in the United States for the treatment of low-grade bulk zinc sul-fide concentrates. Leaching experiments using reactors of 500-mL and I-gal capacity were conducted on a bulk concentrate containing 19.3 pct Zn, 35.6 pct Fe, and 39.4 pct S. The effects of pressure, temperature, and percent solids on extraction were investigated. The chlorine-oxygen leaching procedure showed promise for treating the concentrates. Zinc extractions of 95 pct or more were obtained by leaching at 50 pct solids in the temperature range of 1000 to 1200 C. Zinc extractions by leaching with chlorine followed by oxygen at reactor pressures of 50 to 100 psig were independent of pressure.
