In the production units of ferromanganese alloys wastewater are generated. They mainly arise from gutters of drainage water from warehouse of raw material (manganese ore, reducing agents and other), product and slag. This wastewater, in general, may contain particles that will suffer difficulty to naturally decant, giving the water turbidity and color characteristics. Thus, this study aims to characterize the effluent, the treated water and the sludge from the sedimentation tank from the one main Brazilian plant. The investigated characteristics were: turbidity, total solids (TS), suspended solids (SS), dissolved solids (DS), pH, Eh, COD (chemical oxygen demand), residue classification and chemical analysis by ICP - OES. The turbidity before treatment was 417 NTU and after passing through the tank, 44 NTU, a figure slightly higher than the emission standards for Class 1 regulated by the Brazilian environmental legislation in force. The values for TS, SS and DS of the effluent were 225, 114.3 and 110 mg/L, respectively. For the treated water the values were 93, 48.3 and 45 mg/L for TS, SS and DS, respectively. The sedimentation process was able to reduce by 21 % of the COD. In the test of loss on ignition (LOI) from the tank bottom sludge were observed losses of 29.35 %, while the volatile analysis found 20.70 % of volatiles in the sample. It was determined that the concentrations of Al, Fe, Mn and S are, respectively, 0.1875 mg.L-1, 0.3071 mg.L-1, 0,789 mg l-1 and 0.00828 mg.L-1, values above the maximum allowed by law. Based on the analysis of X-ray diffraction, the identified minerals in the sludge were quartz, muscovite, kaolinite, calcite and albite.

This revolutionary super-fine crusher has the unique capacity to generate fine and ultra-fine products from single stage reductions of coarse or fine mineral feeds. The crusher consists of a rotating compression chamber and an internal gyrating mandrel. The axis of rotation of the shell is displaced relative to the axis of the vertically mounted mandrel. The inner surface of the compression chamber is machined as double cone frustums at an angle equal to the displacement angle. Crusher feed is accelerated into a compacted particle bed, which lines the inside of the compression chamber. The depth of the compacted bed progressively increases until the mandrel is engaged. The mandrel is then free to rotate with the compression chamber. Continued feeding increases power draw and triggers the counter rotating mandrel gyration drive. The gyrating mandrel delivers multiple compressions at high pressure to the rotating particle bed. High concentrations of energy are harnessed within a small active volume over short retention times. The combination of extraordinarily high power intensity and extreme compressive force results in primary compressive fracture and induced secondary tensile failure. The axially displaced rotation of the compression chamber effectively distributes the breakage forces throughout the particle bed. This paper covers open circuit, pilot trials on magnetite, perlite, garnet, marble and a copper/pyrite concentrate. Particular emphasis is placed on the extraordinary results achieved with trials on zircon and highly refractory fly ash. The extreme duties were deliberately chosen to demonstrate the crusher’s application scope and potential to impact capital operating and maintenance costs as the technology matures. Super-fine crushing, once considered impracticable has the potential to offer compelling options for the generation of ultra-fine products.

A dual-drive planetary mill, which has a rotating shaft that sweeps a circle of diameter 750 mm, has been designed. The planetary mill is powered by a 5 hp motor to rotate the main shaft and a 3 hp motor to rotate the jars. The charge dynamics inside the horizontal-axis planetary ball mill was established using three-dimensional DEM simulations. The simulation results provided data to determine the impact energy distribution and the effect of process parameters such as mill speed and filling. It has been observed that the mean impact energy per unit time increases with rotation-to-revolution ratio, whereas the average number of inter-particle impacts per unit time decreases. The mill was also used to synthesize a variety of powders. Here three case studies of reaction milling are briefly presented: (i) cementite and silicon carbide, (ii) oxide dispersed strengthened (ODS) steel, and (iii) magnetite from blue dust. In each case, the powder was produced by mixing and then milling the corresponding pure components. The phase evolution, particle size distribution, and morphology of particles during milling were studied for various samples collected at different milling times using laser size analyzer, SEM, TEM, and Mössbauerspectroscopy. The results established a convenient way to produce powders of high technological and commercial value.

"Flotation is without a doubt one of the major processes for the separation of fine minerals and it has been applied for more than a century. A key task of a successful flotation separation is to find the proper chemical treatment to selectively hydrophobize and thus float a certain mineral phase using molecules or ions referred to as collectors, depressants, regulators and frothers. Commonly floatability is determined by microflotation tests using the Hallimond tube with pure mineral phases. This method however requires the pure mineral phase which is very often not even taken from the same deposit which is going to be processed. In this paper we present a new approach to in-situ determine and even map the floatability of finely disseminated mineral phases within cross-sections of an ore. It is based on measuring hydrophobic effects using colloidal probe atomic force microscopy with a hydrophobic polystyrene probe based on force spectroscopy with a lateral resolution of only a few nanometers. Coupled confocal Raman spectroscopy on the same locality enables the identification of the mineral phase. We present the working principles of the method and show which signals in the force spectra characteristic for hydrophobic interactions can be used to define floatability and which can then be mapped as single quantities, e.g. jump-into-contact events due to nanobubble occurrence or parameters of the long range interaction curves most probably due to capillary effects. A finely grained silicate ore containing the valuable rare earth mineral eudialyte from southern Sweden as well as pure samples of magnetite are presented as substrates to demonstrate the capability of this new approach. This method will not only help to find the proper flotation chemistry but it can furthermore help in researching and unravelling problems of floatability within similar mineral phases."

"One of the challenges the mineral processing industry is facing is caused by the fact that water resources in mining areas are becoming very limited and the cost of water is increasing. The water sources in arid regions often have high salt content. Environmental regulations are forcing plant operations towards completely closing the water cycles within plants. This means that impurities (salts, reagents, ions dissolved from minerals, etc.) accumulate within the circuit that will affect the flotation performance. Water purification can significantly increase the operating costs therefore it should be carefully considered weather the impurities need to be completely removed or is there a tolerable level of impurities that can still be left in the process water without significant deterioration of the flotation performance? Several additional questions arise: what are the tools that help identify what is a tolerable level of impurities? How do the different impurities interact and what is their effect on the process? The effect of frothers on the dynamic properties of air/liquid interface in different size-scales has been extensively studied by the authors in the past. Based on these studies a frother characterization framework was developed that systematically examines the dynamic surface properties of the air/liquid interface in relation to the bubble size. This work can be considered as tool that could be used for the above mentioned purpose. The present study investigates weather the same frother characterization framework can be applied for systems where both frother and different types of salts are present. Nasfroth 240 was used as a frother, in combination with structure-breaker KCl or structure-maker NaCl and CaCl2. Bubble size measurements in laboratory scale mechanical flotation cell and laboratory flotation column and dynamic surface property measurements (dynamic surface tension and dilatational elasticity) were performed. The results highlighted the addition of salt to the frother solutions significantly decrease the bubble size and increase the froth high. The coalescence behavior of bubbles showed correlation between the D32 and ionic strength of salts. The results highlighted that the studied structure maker and structure breaker salts effect the dynamic surface properties in different way."

Pregnant leach solutions from waste of printed circuit boards (WPCB) leaching contain many impurity metals (Fe in particular) at significant levels. These impurities should be reduced to acceptable levels to avoid problems in downstream recovery processes e.g., low current efficiencies in electro-winning of copper from sulfate solutions in the presence of ferric. In this study, removal of iron in the form of goethite from synthetic (30 g/L Cu2+ and 1 M SO42-) and real leach solutions of WPCB was studied in some detail. The influences of initial concentration of iron (1-4.5 g/L Fe3+), pH (2.5-4.0), temperature (80-90°C) and seeding (23.5 g/L) were investigated over a period of 4 h. A significant increase in the iron precipitation was observed (i.e., from 68% to 96% over 4 h) with rising the pH from 2.5 to 4.0. The addition of seeds had also increased the removal rate over 4 h albeit to a limited extent i.e., from 96% to 99%. For the real leach solutions of sulfate (H2SO4-H2O2) and sulfate/chloride leaching (H2SO4-CuSO4-NaCl), precipitation of iron was found to be 63-73% (pH 2.5) and 93-98% (pH 4.0), respectively. The precipitates were further characterised by SEM-EDS analysis which showed the presence of copper (1-25%) in the precipitates indicating significant copper co-precipitation from the solution. These copper losses can be attributed to the formation of copper compounds such as anthlerite and brochantite within the range of pH (2.5-4.0) tested. This study showed that iron can be readily removed from synthetic/real leach solutions of WPCBs to a large extent (=93%) at the expense of high copper losses particularly at pH 4.0.

Comminution is one of the most energy consuming stages in a mineral processing plant. This consumption is not only related to the power supplied to equipment, but also to the indirect or embodied energy, mainly associated to materials that are worn during operation, including grinding media and liners. Until recently, preparation of iron ores in Brazil did not use comminution intensively, given that plants mainly produced sinter feed, natural pellet fines, besides lump ore. However, with decreasing ore grades, size reduction now occupies a centre stage in nearly all new plants. Technologies used up to date for processing low-grade iron ores in Brazil, in particular itabirites, have consisted of three or four stages of crushing followed by ball milling. A number of new plants are either being built or are currently being designed that will process the same type of ore, so that engineers are investigating alternative comminution routes. The paper analyses comparatively four comminution routes for processing a particular itabirite ore, many of which using technologies and layouts that have not yet been used in such application. Using data from bench scale and/or pilot-plant tests, the different routes are compared on the basis of sustainability principles in accordance to the Brazilian energy matrix, which is quite particular. It is concluded that if the sustainability criterion is used, then the optimal route would correspond to a circuit that uses HPGR technology with truncated feed followed by ball milling. Given the particular case of itabirite iron ores and specially to the one in the present work and the source of Brazilian energy, it is evident that indirect energy expenditure in comminution plays a significant role in greenhouse gas emissions when compared to direct energy, being the reason for the great attractiveness of HPGR technology. Evidently that these will have to be balanced against CAPEX, OPEX, NPV and other qualitative criteria, which can certainly lead to a different optimal circuit.

The air dense medium fluidized bed separator which has been developed for the dry beneficiation of coal is recognized as a low cost and high efficiency process. The success of this separator for beneficiating any specific coal, alone or in combination with other processing methods, mostly depends on the characteristics of run-of-mine coal. Therefore, a thorough knowledge of the mineralogical composition and washability characteristics of representative coal sample is highly essential for correctly and effectively assess the suitability of this process. Available literature conforms that although the characteristics of Indian non-coking coals are well known, the correlations between the particle compositions with its density are entirely lacking. In the present study the washability, proximate, ultimate and elemental analysis was conducted for four typical Indian high-ash non-coking coals and their elemental compositions were well correlated with the specific gravity of coal. The results obtained in this study provide some essential information to the coal-processing engineer for efficiently operate and control the process. Furthermore, the beneficiation potential of air dense medium fluidized bed was experimentally evaluated and compared with the results obtained from an operating wet beneficiation plant. Based on this comparative study the air dense medium fluidized bed is established to be a possible alternative to the conventional wet beneficiation method for beneficiating Indian coals with Ep values in the range of 0.03 to 0.06

"In this work, authors will show the efficiency of computer technology and chemical programs at studying collectors for flotation of minerals of elements of platinum group (EPG). Clusters various minerals EPG (flotation reagents) are created, named us clusters minerals (reagents) as their structure corresponds to the chemical formula, and the distance between separate atoms corresponds to the known tabulated data. By molecular modeling are investigated clusters sperrylite PtAs2, stumpfilyte PtSb, sadberryte PdSb, sobolevskite PdBi, palladoarsenyte Pd2As, paolovyte Pd2Sn, rustenburgyte (Pt3Sn, Pt6Sn2) and their computer parameters (absolute rigidity, electronegativity, transfer factors of carry, charges of the atoms) are determined. Tellurides of palladium (IV, II) merenskyite PdTl2 and kotulskyte PdTe and platinum clusters are investigated: PtFe4, Pt3Fe, PtFe (Pt2Fe2), Pt2Fe (Cu) Ni. The technique of attachment of the collector (composites) to cluster atoms EPG is offered. For the first time, it is established that at linkage of flotation collectors on monodentate, bidentate and bridged to circuits with atoms clusters the minerals containing atoms As, Sb, Bi, Pb, Sn, reaction of connection with change of a degree of oxidation of these atoms and occurrence of a proton operates. It is executed virtual skirling organic compounds connections by the developed criteria from accessible libraries of a database. The principle of an estimation of interaction energy for flotation reagents with mineral clusters is offered. It is developed the prognosis of collector activity evaluation (P?AE) and his values for candidates in collectors for flotation of minerals EPG are calculated. For flotation of ores containing Pt and Pd minerals, a number of reagents, including compounds on basis P (III), for innovational technology of Pt, Pd mineral flotation are recommended. "The effects of mixed collectors on some physicochemical parameters (thin film lifetime, kinetics of expansion of the three-phase contact, equilibrium three-phase contact angle and surface tension) involved in the elementary act of flotation were investigated experimentally.We have used the microscopic thin balance developed by Scheludko et al (1970) to study the stability and interactions within the thin film between the silica surface and air bubble with (i) a long chain C10 amine and (ii) a cationic/anionic surfactant systems consisting of mixtures of a long straight C10 chain amine with long straight chain C8, C10 and C12 sulfonates at 1:1 molar ratio. The experiments were performed at a range of concentrations at pH 6.5. The equilibrium contact angle was measured with a microscope technique using the modified Mingins-Sheludko method (Mingins and Scheludko, 1979). The surface tension was measured by the method of Wilhelmy (Adamson, 1960). It was found that the mixed surfactants caused lower contact angles, lower rates of the thin film rupture and longer film lifetime, compared to the pure amine system."

"INTRODUCTIONThe objective of this work was to deport silver into a residue suitable for subsequent extraction without compromising the high base metal extraction during the pressure oxidation.RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONThe complex sulphide from the tailing pond of Cannington mine, Australia, was re-grounded and a bulk concentrate was recovered by flotation. The major economic sulphides are galena and sphalerite. The chemical analyses revealed 17.22% Fe; 4.88% Zn; 8.22% Pb; 9.49% S2- and 422 g/t Ag. The baseline cyanidation yielded 36.60% of silver at high cyanide consumption (24.17 kg/t NaCN). Pressure oxidation at 150°C (in the absence of iodide), followed by cyanidation of the residue yielded 8% silver extraction. Pressure oxidation was carried out at 110-150°C in sulphate media with additions of potassium iodide and the resulting residue was subjected to cyanidation. High recovery of silver was achieved because its incorporation into lead-hydronium jarosite during the pressure oxidation was minimised, while its deportment into the cyanide-soluble silver iodide was favoured (Figure 1). Silver recovery decreased slightly at high temperatures (140° and 150°C) because of the enhanced stability and kinetics of leadhydronium jarosite, but this could be overcome by increasing acidity and iodide concentration of the slurry."

"The first experiments on the vacuum drying of spherical clay sample are presented and the theoretical model of the process is considered. The model is based on the solution of the heat and the moisture transfer equations with the effective thermal conductivity and water diffusion coefficients for wet porous clay-like medium. The time and radial dependence of the temperature and the moisture were calculated for different initial conditions. The results obtained for the time dependence of the moisture content are in good agreement with the experimental results obtained in the initial period, when all the moisture in the sample did not freeze to form an ice crust. INTRODUCTION Capillary-porous materials very often occur in nature and in industry. A porous medium is a solid matrix with voids, or pores, which are continuously connected. These pores are usually filled with fluids or moisture, water vapor and air that can pass through the medium because the voids are interconnected. The void fraction in the solid matrix is referred to as the porosity. Porosity or void fraction is a measure of the void (i.e. ""empty"") spaces in a material, and is a fraction of the volume of voids over the total volume. The moisture content in porous media determines the properties of the porous body, its mechanical and thermo-physical properties, such as density, plasticity, viscoelasticity, swelling, cracking, and so on. Complex processes of heat and mass transfer occur in porous bodies when they are heated or cooled, during drying or freezing (Luikov,1966). The course of these processes depends essentially on the physical-chemical composition of the solid matrix of the porous body, on its fractal dimension, porosity and morphology. The clay and clay minerals are the most important porous materials in the history of the mankind (Mukherjee, 2013). Clay is a very fine grained, unconsolidated rock matter, which is plastic when wet, but becomes hard and stony when heated. It has its origin in natural processes, mostly complex weathering, transported and deposited by sedimentation within geological periods. Clay is composed of silica {SiO2), Alumina (Al2O3) and water (H2O) plus appreciable concentrations of oxides of iron, alkali and alkaline earth, and contains groups of crystalline substances such as quartz, feldspar, and mica. Building materials, bricks, and tiles, pottery, porcelain and faience are made from clay. Clay is used in the food and medical industry, and, not least, in the mining industry as a carrier containing aluminum, silicon and other valuable elements, as well as metals (copper, gold) as constituents, contained in the pores in the form of micro- and nano-particles or grains."

"This paper summarizes the activities performed to predict SAG milling throughput at Minera Esperanza. Having highly reliable geometallurgical models aided by the new computer tools and specific metallurgical testing to rely on has become a major issue in recent times due to their impact on the business. Minera Esperanza’s SAG throughput model was constructed by characterizing the ore feed and operational parameters of the plant. Producing a robust model required satisfying number of requirements for the parameters used for both the ore and the plant as follow: 1) geologic and geometallurgical characterization parameters; and 2) parameters of a plant running at the rated production under optimum operating conditions. Obtaining these parameters required increasing the quantity of samples and metallurgical testing through drilling campaigns, mapping the drill holes and putting samples through various comminution tests while sampling all operational flows at the plant to obtain the metallurgical information for the operational parameters. The information was entered on the JKSimMet software to enable a throughput model to be developed to output SAG mill throughput predictions that are very close to actual throughput figures, i.e., accurate within a range of 2% on a monthly basis."

Bauxite is the principal source for the production of aluminum metal which has gained tremendous importance over the years due to its versatility as a metal capable of substituting almost all of the non-ferrous metals, non metals like wood, plastics, fibre glass, etc. and even steel in many applications. 90% of the high purity alumina needed for the production of this wonder metal in the world comes from bauxite. Even though alternate methods have been developed to produce alumina from non bauxite sources, owing to the high capital and operating costs involved, Bayer process still retains the superiority among all the methods by virtue of its simplicity and favourable economics. Bauxite continues to be the perfect ore for alumina production and its remarkable utilization makes it the most important non-ferrous ore. Most of the Alumina Refineries in the world process different types of bauxite and that too from varied sources. The technology employed in the Alumina Refineries depends on the Bauxite processed, with an ultimate view to produce alumina of required quality in the most efficient manner. Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) had from time to time put forward bauxite specifications for metallurgical and other applications. However, these are found no fully based on alumina technology, present developments and availability of different types of bauxite in the country. The aim of this paper is to provide scheme of metallurgical grading of Indian Bauxite based on the background of alumina processing technologies and availability of various types of bauxite in the country. Efforts are made here to evaluate beneficiation techniques for central Indian Bauxite from the point of view of alumina production. "The platinum-group metals (PGMs), are currently receiving worldwide attention as they have major industrial uses. PGMs, i.e. ruthenium (Ru), rhodium (Rh), palladium (Pd), osmium (Os), iridium (Ir), and platinum (Pt), are widely used as catalysts in petroleum and chemical processes. In addition, they find wide applications in automotive exhaust-gas control converters and are of immense importance to the electronic industry. Broadly speaking, PGMs are extracted in minute quantities from a limited number of ores, found mainly in South Africa and Russia. As the PGMs are both costly and almost indestructible, they are usually recycled from various forms of scrap. In other words, the recycling of the PGMs is an essential factor in the overall management of the PGM economy. In addition, the ever-increasing user areas have created renewed interest in the search for new sources or deposits of PGM, which in turn requires an in-depth knowledge of its characteristics. In this work, the emphasis is placed on the need to analyze the composition and microstructure of blast-furnace slag for recovering PGM metals. In other words, chemical composition, surface analysis and microstructure analysis of the DC arc furnace slag have been carries out. The aim is to provide a detailed analysis of this material for anyone with an interest in gaining further knowledge of its specific content for recovering PGMs."

"In the Dongri Buzurg Manganese Mine of M/s Manganese Ore (India) Ltd., high grade lumpy manganese ore required for iron and steel industries is produced through multi-stage crushing and screening. This has resulted in accumulation of 50,000 tonnes of low grade fines over the years. This production of such fines is still going on. The fines create environmental problems, like air and water pollution and siltation in adjoining fields. Besides containing lot of manganese values, they occupy large space which is very scare in mining area.The Indian Bureau of Mines under one of its statutory functions has suggested the company to explore the possibility of recovery of additional values under conservation and environmental aspects. Hence the company has sponsored a bulk sample for beneficiation studies in the Modern Mineral Processing Laboratory and Pilot Plant of Indian Bureau of Mines at Nagpur, India. The main manganese minerals present in these mine rejects have been identified as pyrolusite and psilomelane. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of evolving a suitable beneficiation flowsheet to obtain manganese concentrates assaying over 72% MnO2 to be used as raw material for the manufacture of dry cell batteries.The sample/material was subjected to characterisation studies in terms of chemical analysis, granulometry and mineralogical compositions. Based on these characterisation studies, the beneficiation process developed comprised of desliming, jigging and low intensity magnetic separation mainly to reject quartz, silicates and jacobsite. The manganese concentrate thus produced assayed 70.2% MnO2 with MnO2 recovery of 78% and weight per cent yield of 63.5. This natural concentrate could be mixed with the electrolytic manganese dioxide produced by the company and this blend can thus be used as a raw material for the manufacture of dry cell batteries by the end users. The concept of a high pressure liquid jet mill with highly unsteady flow, has been developed and recently patented by Cornerstone Technologies LLC (CsT), for the purpose of micron and sub-micron particle production. The mill accepts feed sizes up to 15mm for some materials and is capable of sub-micron production. Successful material range from precious metals such as silver and palladium to dielectric components and substrates such as Barium Titanate slips, zirconia, titania and silica. The process has also succeeded in adequately reducing the size of materials for both composite and coating uses such as anthracite coal, graphite, chrome metal, wollastonite and more than 100 others. A unique design approach has been taken to highly maximize the energy flux in the mill’s chambers to create extremely high turbulence and destructive cavitation. This is assisted by shock waves, which cause particles to undergo ultra high frequency pressure pulsations, high frequency collisions and then abrasion, shattering, hydro-wedging, and cleaving. Due to these extreme properties the processing occurs in just fractions of a second allowing throughputs up to 1000 kg/h on a machine that would fit inside a 60 cm box. The technical solution and technological advance, as well as the environmental and economic benefits indicate rapid and wide spread acceptance of high-pressure liquid jet milling in modern industry.
