The principles of chromatographic and electrophoretic separations are described in simple non-mathematical language. Brief details of the analytical procedures and of equipment are given. Partial analyses of rare earth elements in monazites from four localit- ies in New South Wales are compared with analyses from other localities. The presence of uranium in two of the monazites is recorded. The occurrence of rare earths in nature is outlined and its geological significance is indicated, A low capital cost method of analysis of rare earths in monazites is Introduced.

Extensive personal experience in the USA and Australia has shown that Australians working in suitable work environments are capable of world-class performance. To build such work environments, mining leaders need to ditch two common management approaches that have not succeeded. Firstly, stop relying on traditional methods of trying to change people's behaviour simply by using communication alone to change attitudes and then change behaviour. Analysis of human behaviour explains why this approach fails in all industries. Secondly, stop trying to improve productivity by just running harder and increasing capital investment. Understanding work processes explains why this approach has limited success.

Diversity is a key strength for Western Mining Corporation. An international corporation with assets of about $A10 billion, WMC is engaged in both mining and downstream processing of minerals including nickel, gold, alumina, copper and talc, as well as having interests in oil and gas production and agricultural fertiliser. The company is focusing on several core commodities that will maintain its strength in the years ahead. Although most current mineral assets are within Australia, it plans to have 25 per cent of its operations off-shore by the turn of the century, and be a major producer in at least six core commodities. WMC's strategic and management focus has shifted from a regional approach to a commodity focus so that it can more readily cater for different markets with differing sensitivities. The Resource Management Act 1991 has been amended on a number of separate occasions since its enactment in 1991, and has recently be subject to further amendment by way of the Resource Management Amendment Act 2005. The amendments as proposed in the Resource Management and Electricity Legislation Bill would have had revolutionary and far-reaching consequences. However, as finally enacted, the amendments are a greatly watered down version of what was initially proposed.   Nonetheless, the Resource Management Amendment Act 2005 has provided for a number of amendments that will impact on the minerals industry to varying degrees. This paper discusses in particular the changes and impact of the changes to the definition of æcontaminated landÆ, clarification with respect to the duty to consult, amendments to the provisions relating to National Environmental Standards, and to the council and Environment Court hearing process.

Haematite Recovery from a Tailings Stream Laboratory and pilot scale testing were carried out in 1999 on a tailing sample from a North American iron ore plant using gravity, magnetic and flotation techniques. The ore contained 16 per cent iron mainly in the fine (-38 ¦m) size fraction. Two methods of evaluating the separation efficiency were used; Selectivity Index and Z factor analysis. Tabling and magnetic separation produced poor results, with flotation testing showing some promise, generating concentrates assaying more than 40 per cent Fe. High grade concentrates containing more than 67 per cent Fe were generated using the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig, and it was recommended that this technique be pursued at a larger scale to verify the results obtained.

This paper looks at the problems associated with surface settlements and other subsidence effects from the underground extraction of coal in relation to consent applications under the Resource Management Act. The main features of subsidence are examined with respect to identifying the adverse effects as defined under the RMA. Particular attention is paid to sites where little or no data is available as in the case of greenfield sites or at mines where new or different mining methods are being introduced. In these situations it is not possible to make accurate predictions of settlements or strains and therefore other factors need to be considered. The long term effects which might occur post mining are examined in relation to mitigation and management options.

In both surface and underground coal mines, the detection of geological structures ahead of workings is recognised as being fundamental to the efficient operation of the mine. Mining into zones of unexpected structures has a drastic effect on a mine's productivity. For the prediction of structures, geophysical methods can be applied from the air, from the ground surface, from boreholes and from underground workings. There are several improvements to report in the geophysical methods being developed for these purposes. These include developments in three-dimensional seismic reflection surveying, cross-hole seismic reflection methods and radar systems. The recent development of the radio imaging method for use in underground mine workings will complement existing in-seam seismic methods. Geophysical techniques for use in horizontal boreholes are also under development.

A stibnite flotation concentrate from Costerfield in Victoria was found to contain 63.3 g/t An while its sizing distribution indicated that 81.6 per cent of the material was less than 38 ¦m. A 24 hour cyanidation test by a standard bottle roll method recovered 15 per cent of this gold. Pressure cyanidation under conditions of ambient temperature, 40 per cent pulp density, an oxygen pressure of 1000 - 2000 kPa and an initial NaCN concentration of 15 kg/t, resulted in a recovery of 65 pe cent of the gold after only two hours of leaching. Aqueous pressure preoxidation of the concentrate followed by the standard bottle roll cyanidation realised gold recoveries as high as 96 per cent. Issues around water û its quality, use, availability and environmental value û can be a major point of tension between mineral projects and local communities. Failure to manage these issues appropriately can jeopardise the obtaining of regulatory approvals for new projects and place at risk the æsocial licence to operateÆ of existing operations. Conversely, there may also be significant opportunities for companies to engage constructively with communities over water issues and to make a positive contribution to the sustainable development of these communities. Using case studies, this paper will explore the various types of social risks and opportunities associated with water and mineral resource development and identify key learnings relating to the management of these issues.

Gold recovery by catalytic copper ammonium thiosulphate solution has been studied. Such a process strategy is very attractive for leaching certain difficult-to-treat ores and presents lessened lixiviant toxicity compared to cyanide. Newmont Gold Company has evaluated the ammonium thiosulphate heap leach process for gold recovery from low-grade carbonaceous sulphidic refractory ores following biooxidation. The ammonium thiosulphate leach process has been studied in laboratory, pilot plant and demonstration scale. Satisfactory test results support the continuation of process development. However, the thiosulphate leach chemistry was found to be very complex. Maximum control of the stability of the leaching system is a key factor for success, especially for the heap leach process. Important solution chemistry is discussed in this paper.

Computer simulation is a well-accepted tool for modelling the behaviour of large or complex operating systems. Less common is the use of simulation as a design aid, but FluorÆs simulation group regularly applies discrete and continuous simulation models to assist with optimisation and risk management in a wide variety of mining, mineral processing and logistics applications. To demonstrate the wide applicability of simulation modelling as a design aid, this paper describes three case examples from FluorÆs recent work that cover both discrete and continuous operations.

It is a facet of modern-day life that change, even of a revolu- tionary nature, normally passes without comment. People have become so conditioned to continuous improve- ments in every aspect of their lives that they would be surprised only if there were to be no change. This paper seeks to demonstrate the extent of technical change, and to indicate the need for a fuller advantage to be taken of the technologies available, or potentially available, to the profes- sion. It contends that the mineral industry has been particularly slow to embrace technical change, and has good reason to con- sider an improved attitude for both prosperity and survival.

Various ways for applying the X-ray fluorescent method to process lump-by lump separation of secondary aluminium raw materials (scrap, slags, waste) as well as ferrosilicon and ferrochromium are being considered and physically demonstrated. A commercial X-ray radiometric sorter has been developed for processing secondary raw materials. Marketable quantities of aluminium scrap with appropriate copper and zinc content have been produced for smelting with a minimal additional of pure aluminium. An industrial complex for scrap processing, incorporating two X-ray radiometric sorters from the Hammermils company is successfully operating at one of the works in Russia.

This paper deals with the current situation in the mining industry in Poland. An overview of typical transport systems working in the different branches of mining is provided. The transport systems currently used in lignite mining, particularly in the Belchat=w mine û the largest brown coal mine in Poland, and those operating in copper mines are described in detail. New designs of belt conveyors used in underground hard coal and copper mining are presented.

In the last 100 years, statistical sampling theory for particulate materials has developed to a stage where sampling systems can be confidently designed to provide assay results of known and controlled variance for a chosen time period. The two independent sources of sampling variance, namely intrinsic and distributional heterogeneity are defined and explained quantitatively. Intrinsic heterogeneity is characterised by the sampling constant for the material and distributional heterogeneity is quantified by the process steam variogram or covariance function. The means by which sampling systems can be designed to an accuracy specification is described.

A thermodynamic model of the copper Peirce-Smith (P-S) converter has been developed to predict the behaviour of magnetite in the converter slag, the amounts of slag and matte, the compositions of slag and matte, the volume of the bath, the bath temperature and the SEMTECH OPC signals. The predictions of bath temperature, slag and matte compositions and magnetite content in the slag have been validated by the industrial data. The effects of fluxing strategy, returns and skim charges, oxygen enrichment and temperature on the magnetite formation in the slag have been predicted and discussed. Some industrial applications of this model have been presented.

In designing for a highly productive new mine during the present declining coal market, a very detailed ò planning is necessary. Attitudes of both management and coal operators may have to be changed, with more initial participation by the unions, governmental agencies, and the coal owners. A considerable number of Australian mines are remote from labour source and this trend is likely to increase particularly in the state of Queensland. Consequently such 'mines must be developed on the basis of the future technological and social changes in order to minimise both the capital and operating costs.

This paper provides an overview of the future for underground thick seam coal mining in Australia. It reviews the available and anticipated mining systems and technologies which may be adopted to mine coal seams of greater than 4.5 m thickness, together with an assessment of the likely technological and operational risks and challenges involved. This overview of mining systems is presented in the context of both current and recently completed research projects funded through the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP). The projects have been joint investigations between The University of New South Wales Mining Research Centre (UMRC) and the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE). Outcomes from the projects have included an appraisal and classification of underground thick seam reserves in Australia and their suitability for each mining method.

Expert systems have been employed in a number of areas for a considerable number of years. However, the traditional long development times associated with these systems have restricted their application. With the advent of powerful Expert System Development Tools such as COMDALE/X and the use of efficient development techniques, the time required can be drastically reduced. This results in the availability and applicability of this technology to a wide range of applications. This paper discusses some of the 'rules' which indicate amenability (or otherwise) of a particular problem to an expert system solution. Various problem types are examined and these are illustrated with reference to examples of their use at various operating sites.
