The general experience in gold cyanidation research activities and plant practice is that high oxygen and cyanide concentrations improve gold leaching kinetics which in turn reduce residence time and increase throughput. This paper shows how the improved pre-oxidation method for the pyrrhotite rich gold ore of Bounty Gold Mine has increased gold recoveries at lower reagent consumption rates. The installation of a pipe reactor, in conjunction with a Multi Mix Systems oxygen injector, has lowered the amount of oxygen required to achieve a dissolved oxygen level target of 20 mg/L. The improvement of the pre-oxidation stage and lead nitrate solution addition has led to a reduction in the free cyanide concentration required for leaching, resulting in a decrease in cyanide consumption rate by 36 per cent to achieve a one to two per cent improvement in the gold recovery.

IncoÆs Clarabelle mill currently processes ores from eight mines in the Sudbury basin area in Ontario, Canada. The ore from the Garson mine contains a much higher concentration of arsenic than the other ores. Adding this ore into the feed to the mill has resulted in an increase in arsenic content of the Cu-Ni bulk concentrate to a level that significantly affects the smelter operation, and more importantly the efficiency of Cu-Ni separation in the Matte separation plant. The arsenic occurs mainly as gersdorffite (NiAsS), with a small amount being in the form of cobaltite (CoAsS). Extensive laboratory tests on depressing arsenic in Garson ore flotation have been conducted and two reagent suites have been identified as effective arsenic depressants. One is the so called MAA depressant which is a mixture of magnesium chloride, ammonium chloride, and ammonium hydroxide. This reagent combination was reported to depress other arsenide minerals such as arsenopyrite (FeAsS) and enargite (Cu3AsS4). However, in this study for the first time it has been shown to have a depressing effect on gersdorffite. The other reagent suite, a mixture of triethylenetetramine (TETA) and sodium sulfite, that has been reported as an effective pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS) depressant in pentlandite ((NiFe)9S8) flotation, has not been reported as gersdorffite depressant before. The effectiveness of both reagent suites is more pronounced when the arsenic minerals are oxidised through pulp aeration or the addition of hydrogen peroxide. With a flow sheet consisting of a magnetic separation, rougher- scavenger flotation, followed by regrinding and cleaning of combined magnetic and scavenger concentrate, the arsenic recovery to the final Cu-Ni bulk concentrate was reduced from 73 per cent in baseline test to less than 30 per cent with either reagent suite at no decrease in nickel recovery. The TETA/sulfite reagent combination has the advantage over the MAA suite in that pyrrhotite is also depressed, rather than being activated, and the copper and nickel concentrate grades are therefore increased.

In contrast to the '50s and '60s, the period of the '80s and '90s seems likely to have low growth in demand but much greater levels of technological change. In such a climate there will be pressure on costs, productivity will continue to rise and competitiveness will be closely associated with maintenance of the most effective technology. The penalties for inappropriate investments, whether short sighted or mistakenly based on a particular view of the future, will be greatly enhanced. Accordingly, there will be a need for significantly improved anticipation of technical change and thus for better planning. Study of the funding and direction of the world's R&D effort can provide a useful input to the planning processes within industries and individual firms. Such a study also suggests some insights into the characteristics of those countries which have achieved substantial growth and high standards of living over the past two decades. These characteristics may offer significant reminders for our own development. The particular implications for the Australian minerals industry include the need for direction that is sensitive to changing market requirements and customer practice. This is not simply "more of the same." In particular it appears essential for both basic and applied R&D to provide a sound basis for the purchase and ongoing development of the new technology required to achieve international Competitiveness.

For the mechanisation or automation of mining, recognition of the shape of mined cavities is basic information. A three dimensional shape measuring system, developed and tested, includes an ultrasonic range finder which is attached to the tip of a serial link manipulator. The range finder can be moved to any position and direction in the operational space of the manipulator. The position of a point on the surface of the object is obtained from the position of the range finder, the direction of the beam of the ultrasonic waves and the measuring distance of the range finder.To avoid collision between the sensor and the object, the manipulator is controlled to trace the surface of the object For the tracing control, another ultrasonic range finder is employed. The test results show that the developed system has high performance.

The Ok Tedi porphyry copper and gold mine is an open-pit operation located within the Star Mountains in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea and is situated near the headwaters of the Ok Tedi-Fly River system. The climate is equatorial sub-alpine with rainfall ranging from five to ten metres per year. Mining commenced in 1984 and to-date approximately 500 Mt of waste rock has been produced. A failing waste rock dump system operates whereby the dumps are eroded by tributary creeks of the Ok Tedi. It is estimated that approximately 250 Mt of waste is retained within the upper reaches of the river system. The waste rock comprises both potentially acid forming rock and limestone and to-date the overall waste has been acid consuming. However, the long-term mine plan identifies declining limestone production and hence an increasing risk of acid generation over the remaining years of the operation. A program was initiated to determine the net acid producing potential (NAPP) required (ie target NAPP) to minimise the risk of acid generation within the waste rock dumps. The results from this program provide guidelines for an operational target NAPP strategy to provide sufficient acid buffering across all size fractions in the waste rock dump for long-term ARD control. Implementation of this plan requires additional limestone to be mined and co-disposed with ROM waste rock.

Gold-bearing polymetallic sulfide deposits are common in Serbia, and mostly occur in the Karpato-Balkan and, to a lesser extent, the Serbo-Macedonian metallogenic province. These deposits û Coka Marin (Majdanpek), Grabova Reka (Blagojev Kamen), Lece (Medvedja) and Veliki Cip (Boranja) û are dominated by Cu and/or Pb-Zn mineralisation that contains a variety of Pb, Zn, Cu and Fe (¦ Sb, As, Bi) sulfides and sulfosalts, as well as native elements. Gangue minerals are composed of quartz, carbonates and rare silicates and barite. Based on their gold content these deposits can be divided in three groups:1. Polymetallic deposits with a high gold content (>1 g/t).2. Polymetallic deposits with an intermediate gold content (0.1 to 1 g/t), and3. Polymetallic deposits with a low gold content (<0.1 g/t). Gold occurs as native gold or as an alloy with silver. Native gold ranges in size from 5 to 20 ¦m, with a few rare grains over 100 ¦m, as isolated grains or as microveins (in the first group of deposits). Its distribution within the deposit in uneven. Native gold in the second group is smaller in size (1 - 5 ¦m, rarely 20 ¦m), where it is uniformly distributed in a quartz-silicate matrix. The third group is of no economical importance. The subject of research has been the first group of polymetallic deposits.

A hydrometallurgical process was developed for recovery of copper from copper-lead matte formed as an intermediate product at the BHAS lead smelter at Port Pirie. A plant utilizing this process was commissioned in 1984. The leach step involves oxidation of the copper-lead matte in an oxygenated acidic chloride-sulphate leachant. The results of laboratory scale testwork from which the chemistry of leaching was deduced, are presented in this paper. The rate of recovery of copper to solution from copper-lead matte depends largely_on the availability of oxygen to the sulphide surface. The optimum leach temperature is approximately 85¦C. Free acid must be supplied according to the stoichiometry of the leach reaction: Cu1.91 S + PbS + 2.91 H2SO4 + 1.455 02 = 1.91 Cu2+ + 1.91 SOj- + PbSO4(s) + 2.91 H2O + S¦ The grind size of the matte is of minor significance. Chloride concentration in leachant should be at or above a minimum of 10.0 g/l. Chloride acts to complex cuprous ions formed during leaching.

Flooding velocities were measured in a laboratory column (96 mm 4) provided with both bottom and side air entry Packings used were 6 mm glass rings and spheres and -16 +8 mm coke. Results showed that when air was introduced through side nozzles flooding velocities were much higher than those obtained when air was introduced at the bottom of the column. Significance of the results and application to blast furnace flooding is discussed from the viewpoint of assymmetric gas flow.

With the rapid development of the Chinese steel industry, the strong demand for iron ores has led to huge imports of various iron ores from all over the world. As a relatively new force in the iron ore world and an important raw material supplier, Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) has achieved an annualised production rate of 100 Mt of iron ore fines. Typical blends were designed to simulate sinter blends employed in Chinese steel mills, and to determine sintering properties and metallurgical performance of blends comprising FMG Rocket fines in pilot sinter pot. It is shown that the sinter of typical blends comprising 15 - 20 per cent rocket fines possesses excellent sintering properties and metallurgical performance. With Rocket fines substitution for competitor ores in a typical customer mill blend comprising fully imported fines, the sinter productivity and tumble index increased from 1.45 t/m2h and 62.0 per cent to 1.54 t/m2h and 64.0 per cent, respectively, while attaining similar reducibility index and reduction degradation index at lower solid fuel consumption.CITATION:Zhu, D, Guo, Z, Ooi, T C, Chun, T, Pan, J and Young, J M, 2013. This paper presents an overview of the development and operation of the PT Adaro Indonesia coal mining project. This operation is an initial two million tonne per annum mine, located in South Kalimantan, Indonesia.The paper places emphasis on some of the more unique infrastructure development and operational challenges that exist in such a remote location environment.A brief summary is also given of the Indonesian coal industry, its direction and position as a significant coal producing competitor for Australia.

The Brightwater conveyance system is located near Seattle, Washington in the north-western United States. The East Contract portion of the system consists of a 4.3 km long, 5.9 m diameter tunnel in soft ground and two large shafts constructed in challenging soil conditions. The two shafts are situated side-by-side in an urban valley. One will house an influent structure to direct incoming sewage and outgoing treated effluent, while the other will house a 645 megalitre per day (ML/d) influent pump station. The tunnel contains four pipelines: two force mains to convey untreated wastewater eastward from the new pump station to a new treatment plant, one gravity-pressure pipeline to convey treated effluent westward to a new outfall in Puget Sound, and one high-pressure pipeline to convey reclaimed water from the treatment plant to downstream distribution points. The shafts and the tunnel presented many design challenges. Groundwater is near the surface in the area surrounding the shafts, and compressible peat and clay soils preclude dewatering during construction. These and other challenges were encountered during design of the pump station shaft and multiple-pipe tunnel. The challenges were addressed by a design that includes a dual intersecting circular cell shaft (referred to as æthe peanutÆ) and a single tunnel into which stacked pipes will be æstuffedÆ. This paper discusses the design approach and design details for both elements.

This paper outlines the aims, objectives and means by which a life of mine land use plan was established for Comalco's bauxite mine at Weipa. Comalco realises the need to strategically plan for future mining activities and still minimise the impact of operations on the natural resources of the region. With this realisation long-term forward planning has been implemented to improve the Company's ability to select future sites for mining, industrial use, agriculture, town expansion and conservation purposes.The knowledge of mineral, water, soil and animal resources has expanded dramatically in the past decade. During 1990 Cornalco purchased Geographic Information System technology which has allowed previously collected resource data to be presented in map form. These maps as part of the Life of Mine Land Use Plan are both information based and strategic which can be efficiently updated. The maps allow a broad audience from engineers, geologists, environmental scientists and site managers to government officers and the general public to comprehensively view and scrutinise the operations.

An investigation was performed to determine the sequence of events which caused the 1987 surface subsidence and related damage to several homes in Walker County, Alabama, USA (see Figure 1). Surface affects compared to mine maps indicated the subsidence to be mine related. However, two coal seams had been worked under this area. The upper seam, the American seam ranged from 250 to 280 feet beneath the surface in the area in question. It was mined-out before 1955 by room-and-pillar method leaving in place narrow-long pillars to support the overburden strata, and abandoned in 1955. The lower seam, the Mary Lee seam, ranged from 650 to 700 feet beneath the surface. The Mary Lee seam had been abandoned in 1966 and subsequently became flooded. The dewatering of the Mary Lee seam workings in 1986 caused the submerged pillars to be exposed to the atmosphere. Due to multiple seam mining and the fact that workings had been inundated then dewatered, a subsurface investigation ensued to determine the sequence and ultimate cause of surface subsidence. Core sample tests with fracture analysis in conjunction with "down-the-hole" TV camera inspections provided necessary information to determine that the subsidence started in the lower seam and progressed through the upper coal seam to the surface. Evidence from the investigation program established that dewatering of the lower seam workings caused the marginally stable support pillars and the roof to collapse. This failure triggered additional subsidence in the upper seam which broadened the area of the influence at the surface.

The conventional transportation system in open pit, a to u.* itc:,~> truck., to carry the ore along the ramps. Normally, the transportation distance increases greatly as mining progresses deeper. A new approach to overcome the above disadvantage is to adopt a buried roadway by which ores is transported by conveyors from the mining area to the outside dump in the shortest distance so that the production efficiency is greatly increased. Maintenance of the buried roadway in a good working condition is the key factor that determines the success or failure of the proposed approach. This includes the determination of support load, types and structures of support and other related supporting measures. The crucial problem here is to effectively control the load applied on the buried roadway in a certain range that the ordinary support can stand. Based on the theoretical analysis, numerical modelling and physical simulation testing using equivalent material, this paper studies effects on control of the support load by adopting certain measures, for instance reinforcing the surrounding rock and placing the extendable layer between the support and a rock mass. Furthermore, the influence of the dynamic load induced by the movement of heavy vehicles on the stability of the buried roadway is also investigated.

There are countless petroleum and mineral fiscal systems throughout the world. This is because many petroleum and mineral producing countries have developed their own methods of calculating government take through fiscal evolution or individual negotiation. Those countries fortunate enough to have petroleum and mineral reserves within their national boundaries are naturally reluctant to yield this resource without a reasonable return for their population. As resource companies are perceived to be enormous conglomerates with endless amounts of cash and resources, governments and the general public demand reasonable division of production while these finite resources last. On the other hand, because companies engaged in the exploration for, and production of, minerals, oil and gas have to be large or lucky (preferably both) to sustain the great physical and commercial risks involved, the income and profit figures look so large that the general public sees them as an acceptable target for taxation. Taxation of the resource industry has been one of the industry's greatest cash flow problems through the years. Allen and Seba (1993) attribute this to the fact that the most equitable tax systems are those that affect the widest possible total of the population.

Based upon specialised experience of rope mechanics spanning over 20 years, this paper reviews the processes of degradation and fatigue that are relevant to hoisting ropes in mines. The review is brought up to date with an account of the most recent work in this field, which identifies a torsional fatigue process and quantifies the impact of degradation upon the residual service life. A proper understanding of these processes is important in determining how different parameters of hoist design and operation interact to determine rope life. This knowledge is also important in informing decisions relating to rope discard based upon observed condition, as well is identifying the critical features that must be quantified reliably during inspection.

IN any assay office it is of paramount importance to keep the men interested in their work; and in order to do this, men on routine work, such as lead, zinc, and sulphur deterrrrinations, slag analysis, etc, should be changed around monthly. This gives some variety and helps to keep a man's interest on his work, so that better work results. It may be maintained that to keep a man on the same class of work indefinitely makes him more expert at his work. This is certainly true; but in assaying, where accuracy is so essential, it is absolutely necessary for a man to keep his mind on the work, and not 'get' into a mechanical method of working. He is also on the alert to discover means for shortening his analytical methods, and his capacity forwork is increased. Another advantage is that the men get a good all-round training, and one is never at a loss to replace a man on any class of work when he is absent from any cause. This tends to smoother and more efficient running of the assay department. In industrial assaying it is often advantageous to have a result quickly, so that it will be of maximum benefit in the running of some part of the plant, In such a case it pays to sacrifice a little accuracy to speed up a method. The shortest method is less costly, and a quick approximate method is all that is required to give the superintendent the requisite information. Time is thereby saved, and the cost is less. In carrying out assaying for any large industrial plant, such as a smelting works, there is always a tendency for superintendents running the different departments to send in more samples for assay than are absolutely necessary when no system of costing is in operation. Some of these samples may involve a lot of work and heavy expenditure, as, for example, the estimation of only one impurity in a sample of refined lead. The increased international focus on sustainable development and cost improvement, coupled with the unpredictability and adverse impact of droughts in Australia and globally, has highlighted the critical need for responsible management of water within the minerals industry. The Rio Tinto Technology Group recently initiated a priority program to examine how water management practices could be improved within the GroupÆs spheres of activity. Rio Tinto Technical Services (TS), the technical services consulting group of the Technology Group, has for many years been undertaking water management reviews and assisting group operations with the development of responsible water management strategies and plans. Rio Tinto therefore requested that Rio Tinto Technical Services develop a world-class approach to mine water management that will drive improvement in strategic assurance and operational efficiency of water at the companyÆs managed operations across the world. The initiative, known as æExcellence in Water ManagementÆ, includes the selection and use of state-of-the-art management, technical tools and methodologies to strive for best practice. The Rio Tinto Technical Services approach facilitates a consistent and objective assessment of performance across the entire spectrum of complex water management issues within a mining operation, from initial exploration through to decommissioning and close-out of the operation. Based on this rigorous assessment, detailed action plans can be developed, prioritised and scheduled for subsequent implementation. This paper presents the progress and experience gained to date in the æExcellence in Water ManagementÆ program, demonstrated by means of a pilot study conducted at Northparkes Mines in New South Wales.

Good morning. I am very pleased to be invited to present the Opening Address to this inaugural New Zealand Minerals & Mining Conference. It is indeed a pleasure to see so many representatives of this industry, which is so important to New Zealand's economy, present here today.   I extend a warm welcome to all delegates, particularly those from outside New Zealand. To those of you who have travelled from offshore, please closely observe our industry, and do not hesitate to ask Crown Minerals staff here for any further information you may want. I trust you will soon come to the same conclusion that my two following speakers have; that New Zealand is a good investment destination, and further that many of you will decide to invest in New Zealand's minerals and mining industry.   In New Zealand the minerals industry - minerals, coal and petroleum - together constitute an approximate $2.5 billion per year business. In broad terms this is about 3% of our Gross Domestic Product.

A fundamental problem in mine planning is that of determining the "optimum pit limit" of a mine. This optimum pit limit yields information which is considered essential in the evaluation of the economic potential of a mineral deposit, and in the formulation of long -, intermediate -, and short-range mine plans. Since the mid 1960's a number of mathematical techniques based on the "block model" have been proposed for solving this problem. When applied to large ore-bodies the implementation of these techniques, especially the more elaborate ones, poses considerable computational problems. In this paper we report on our work, done jointly with Systems Research Institute of Australia (SRIA), in devising strategies for overcoming these Problems.
