Three-dimensional DEM (Distinct Element Method) simulations were conducted in order to examine the performance of screw conveyors, which are installed to transport bulk materials as parts of many industrial machines, including mining and construction machinery. To apply the DEM to the analysis of screw conveyors, we added a spiral object and cylinder objects, which correspond to the helical screw, the casing pipe, and the driving shaft of a screw conveyor. These objects are represented analytically to enhance the precision and efficiency when calculating the interaction between objects and particles. Simulations were conducted for some real applications: inclined and other types of screws, as well as the basic types (horizontal and vertical). Results were compared with previous work and empirical equations. It is concluded that this method is sufficiently well-developed and useful to analyse various kinds of screw conveyors.

The impact on metallurgical operations of the hydrocarbon energy price hike can be greatly alleviated by recourse to alternative fuels. Information is provided on fuels such as coal, coke, coal-oil mixtures, manufactured gas, wood and charcoal; techniques such as direct and indirect combustion, pulverised fuel injection, slurry burning, fluid bed combustion and various gasification processes. Actual examples of metallurgical operations are used.

The writers of these notes, having conducted some tests on the steam consumption of air compressors under varying conditions, believe that the detailed results of such tests will be of interest to the members of the Institute, and may lead to the contribution of further and more valuable information, of benefit both to manufacturers and users of this class of machinery-to the manufacturer in that he frequently has the opportunity of giving a very thorough test to the machine in the shop, and-tothe user or purchaser by making clear to him what may be reasonably demanded of a high-class machine. It must be remembered that, though of the highest importance, a low steam consumption is but one of the many features of a high-classmachine; for the present, however, it has been considered advisable to confine the paper chiefly to the first-mentioned aspect, with such information concerning the air ends as is obtained along with the steam consumption tests. Unfortunately, too few of these tests are conducted, and but few results are published, therefore the writers feel that no apology is needed in bringing their results before the members.Some nine months ago the Brilliant Extended G. M. Co. was supplied with a compressor by Messrs. Thompson and Co., of Castlemaine, and with the object of testing its actual performance.

The paper outlines the development and objectives of the slim core (50 mm dia.) testing procedures employed at the Company's Central Research Laboratories with particular reference to washability studies required for coalfield evaluation. It shows that when the routine test procedures, that have been developed for cores recovered form the Sydney Coal Basin, were applied to Bowen Basin Coals some of the washing data obtained appeared to be suspect. Though yield indications appeared to be of the right order, product ash, required separating gravity and percentage of near gravity material were found to be at variance with bulk washability data. The results of a correlation study made on an underground seam from the Bowen Basin comparing slim core, hulk sample, and pilot plant washing data are given. The results of a series of studies including washability studies made on slim cores, strip samples, large diameter cores and bulk samples, pilot washing trials and computer simulations of washery circuits treating Lilyvale seam coal from the Bowen Basin are shown.

The main factors controlling the electro- winning of zinc from impure aqueous sulphate electrolytes are reviewed. Zinc, hydrogen and impurities are deposited at the cathode. The current effic- iency for zinc is increased by increasing zinc/ acid ratio and current density and by decreas- ing temperature; and may be unchanged, increased or decreased by the presence of impurity ions. A qualitative comparison of observed and predicted impurity effects is in reasonable agreement. Quantitative treatment of the effects of impurities and cell additives is not available. A tentative explanation of the time dependence of current efficiency in the presence of some impurities is provided. The forms in which impurities are deposited is substantially unknown. Impurities may be classified according to the extent of cathodic deposition. Procedures for control of cathodic deposition of impurities are outlined. The main anodic reactions are the forma- tion of oxygen, manganese dioxide and sulphuric acid. Minor reactions include the oxidation of lead, silver, cobalt and chloride. The principles and practical applications of the Mogensen Sizer are examined, with particular reference to the experiences at Coal Cliff Mine, New South Wales. The Mogensen Sizer has proven to be a worthwhile alternative to conventional screening. It has the flexibility and capacity to offer a useful sizing tool, particularly in areas of confined space. It is simile in design and 1 in construction.

Mill liners provide the wear-resistant surface within grinding mills, they also impart motion to the mill charge, ie the grinding process, by providing the key between the charge and mill shell, and, at the discharge end, they remove the ground contents of the mill. As semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills have grown in size the process aspects of liner design and their impact on mill performance have become particularly important. While feedback from practical experience is critical to good mill liner design, increasingly sophisticated computer-based tools are being developed to assist in mill liner design.

Drilling and blasting constitute important activity in mining operations and account for around 20% of the total excavation cost. The utilization coefficient of energy for explosions of the fragmentation type is hardly 15 to 2035 and an enhancement in this is possible only through optimization of blast design. Designing a 'blast is a complex planning task, which for optimum results calls for matching the energy level of the explosive, rock properties and bench geometry. Optimum blast design needs a comprehensive study and an objective analysis of the intersecting elements. A cost optimised approach is often adopted with due consideration for all the cost sectors viz., drilling, blasting, loading, hauling dumping, and primary crushing, contributing to the overall miring cost. The present study deals with a performance prediction model which predicts the optimum burden for an explosive system in a given rock type to produce a certain desired fragment size. The model is framed on the inputs : shovel size, drill size, unit cost of drilling, bench dimensions, rock density, bond index, unit cost of explosive, maximum work potential. The model has been extended to compute the drilling and blasting costs for an assumed size of the bench to be blasted per round, so as to arrive at the overall cost optimization from a number of explosive systems. A comparative cost calculation with different explosive systems has been presented for a typical iron ore mine in India.

An uniquely-designed flash furnace for smelting of nickel concentrate and for the recovering of metal values from the slag generated has been in successful use for nearly six years. Within the last eighteen months the ability of the furnace to treat slag arising from converting operations without significant reduction in capacity has also been successfully demonstrated. Previously, converter slag had been treated separately in an electric furnace. The salient features of smelter developments are outlined and slag chemistry is discussed. The low cost method for the introduction of coal to partially replace light fuel oil is reviewed and total energy requirements evaluated.

Before proceeding to the main portion of the above subject, a few remarks as to the general question of our mill slimes seem called for, and, with this in view, it is intended to briefly refer to the salient, points connected with their production, treatment and disposal at the mills.It is well known that, owing to the inticate mixture of the constituents of our sulphide ore, 'a very great deal of crushing and grinding is required to detach the particles of galena from the zinc blende and gangue of the ore, and it will be readily understood that, in this operation, a considerable amount of the material is converted into a slime which consists of minute, but ,(as can be see~ under a glass) well definied particles of all the constituents· 6f the ore arid combinations thereof, the relative proportions of which depend on the dual characteristics of hardness and abundance of the different constituents. Coal mining in the Illawarra commenced in 1848. By the early twentieth century mining operations were spread over quite a distance along the coast centred on Wollongong. By this time there were already numerous tunnel mines and one shaft mine. Coal was first reported in Illawarra by Lieutenant Flinders on a voyage of exploration, southerly along the coast from Sydney in 1796. Because of the topography, particularly the escarpment and the narrowness of the coastal plain, access from Sydney was not easy by land and the normal access was by sea. It was not until some coastal areas had been developed for agricultural purposes that the mining of the seams on the South Coast commenced for the supp- ly of fuel. The most important mines in the early nineteenth century were Bulli and Osborne Wallsend. In general, coal was won from the tunnel mines and was transported directly, usually by tramway, to the nearest shipping point. Considerable hardship attended the earliest attempts at mining coal in regard to materials for mining and the way of life of the miners in the vicinity of the mines. With the growth of production and the installation of coke ovens at some mines the area, hitherto virgin bush- land, began to take on a more industrialised appearance. Any engineering firm hoping to do business in the modern world must understand-and take into account-the social and economic realities of client, country, culture, and community. If these considerations are ignored, any large-scale international development project is doomed to failure even before it begins. In this changing world, the distinctions between `developed', `developing', and `less developed' nations are more and more blurred. The so-called `less-developed' and `developing' nations are rapidly acquiring technology, an educated man- agerial and technical class, manufacturing capa- bilities, a growing spectrum of developed financial and raw materials resources, and a broad range of labour skills. These nations are establishing themselves as an integral part of the modern world, on an equal footing with other nations and with justifiable expectations for an ever higher standard of living and an ever better quality of Life.

The Cleveland Mine has an annual ore production of 400,000 tonnes at a grade of 0.79 per cent tin and 0.30 per cent copper. It is achieved by an open stoping method, mechanised overhead sub-level benching. The operation is trackless with a ramp access from all working places to the surf- ace. Broken material is loaded from the stope and development headings into diesel trucks and hauled to the surface crushing plant.

A simple apparatus for delivering pulverized coal as fuel to a SIROSMELT lance is described, and its performance in smelting tests is evaluated. Using the pulverized coal as fuel, the SIROSMELT furnace performed well in both oxidative copper smelting and reductive smelting (zinc fuming). In both cases the evidence suggests that part of the combustion occurred by indirect oxidation of coal particles entrained in the bath. Oxygen potential measurements made during the zinc fuming tests confirmed the general features of the the non-equilibrium mechanism for zinc fuming proposed by Richards and Brimacombe. The zinc level in the slag during continuous fuming was lower than was predicted using an equilibrium model.

Transport technology has produced social changes since the invention of the wheel five millenna ago when man was freed from the need to expend large amounts of energy to move goods and people. Further impetus came with the Industrial Revolution when mechanical power producing devices were applied to land and-water transport. This leap, together with the application to air transport has caused enormous social changes in our way of life. The state of technological advancement of transport modes has dictated to a large degree the develop- ment of Australia and Papua New Guinea. It is suggested that we should not make advances for technology's sake but examine the real needs of the users of transport and ensure that the un- necessary costs are not incurred. The transporting techniques for the ore, waste and slurries used by Bougainville Copper in Papua New Guinea are, in general, quite conven- tional but the scale of operations and the location has modified some modes. in particular the soft' overburden and concentrates were slurried for trans- port and the lack of experience in humid climates restricted the choice of the mine haulage truck. The near future of the transport. industry is seen as an expansion in equipment sizes but the suggestion is made that we need to examine more than the economic and technical aspects; it is necessary for the social con- sequences of our actions to bear examination by outside opinion

Chrome chemicals are commercially produced by the alkali roasting of the chrome-bearing ore chromite with sodium carbonate. In order to ascertain the influence on the extent of reaction of the replacement of Mg(II) for Fe(II) in the chromite spinel structure and the presence of acidic oxides in the gangue material, a series of roasting experiments was conducted using chromite materials from a number of different locations. The roast feeds and products were chemically analysed and the major compounds identified using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope techniques.Mg(II) replacement for Fe(II) in the chromite structure does not appear to restrict the amount of "available" chromium for reaction.Under the test conditions, namely an atmosphere of pure oxygen, finely ground chrome-bearing material, a roast temperature of 950°C and the stoichiometric amount of sodium carbonate to react with the chromite, the yield of water-soluble sodium chromate was able to be expressed as %yield = 104.5 -1.58 × %AI2O3 - 2.23 × %SiO2 for chromite samples containing alumina in the range 7.8 to 27.8 per cent and silica in the range 2.9 to 7.4 per cent.
