The Kanowna Belle deposit was discovered in 1990 following encouraging assays from soil sampling and RAB drilling. At the end of September 1993, diamond drilling had been completed to a vertical depth of 1,000 metres and a resource of 22 million tonnes grading 5.73 grams of gold per tonne containing a million ounces of gold had been defined. The deposit remains open at depth. Pre-production mining for the open pit began in November 1992, construction of the oxide treatment plant began in January 1993 and the first gold was poured in September 1993. Sulphide ore roasting commenced in December 1994 and the underground mine development commenced in July 1995. The Kanowna Belle project is owned by the Golden Valley Joint Venture (GVJV), an unincorporated joint venture with equal shareholdings between North Gold (W.A.) Ltd and Delta Gold N.L. North Gold are the managers of the development and operations and Delta Gold are the managers of exploration throughout the GVJV tenements.

Magnetite has been used in coal processing for many years and it is likely that its use will continue well into the twenty first Century. While magnetite is only a minor cost component in coal processing, the use of processed magnetite in dense medium separation is essential to provide the split of quality coal products which the markets of today demand. The occurrence of magnetite in Australia is relatively abundant, but a combination of its iron content, magnetic properties, quality and proximity to the coal processing plants is essential to provide a low cost product for use in the Coal Industry. The demand for more splitting of coal in coal processing may require more grades of magnetite, particularly as a finer grade lower specific gravity medium to separate the finer quality low ash coals.

FOR some time it has been recognised by the Metallurgical Staff that the presence of pyrite in the ore was adversely affecting the grades of the flotation concentrates.Following experimental work, it was decided to change over from the acid circuit in the mill to an alkaline circuit. The following description sets out the procedure adopted, -and the results obtained when such change-over was made.The Zinc Corporation ore consists mainly of galena, marmatite, calcite, and quartz, with smaller quantities of pyrite, fluorspar, and rhodonite.A clean specimen of marmatite picked from the ore assayed 53.4% zinc, and 10% iron, with no lead or insoluble. However, as zinc concentrates have been, at times, produced in the plant assaying over 53% zinc, and with only 8.7% iron, apparently the picked specimen of marmatite did not represent an average composition.The average would probltbly be between 8 and 9% of iron, and from 53.5 to 54.5% of zinc. It is obvious, therefore, that from this ore it is not possible to produce zinc concentrate of a higher grade than this average figure.In the Colorado School of Mines Quarterly for April, 1928, Vol. 23, No. 2, on page 47, we find the following statement:As the zinc in the ore exists as marmatite, which contains approximately 54.5% zinc and 10% iron, 49% zinc in the concentrate may be considered high.This statement refers to the ore treated in the Sullivan concentrator, owned by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited.

Reduction of waste oxides from steel plant operations was investigated in a laboratory tube furnace at different temperatures and furnace atmospheres. The results have shown that the waste oxide pellets are reduced rapidly to very high degrees of metallization irrespective of the furnace atmosphere and that the reduction is simultaneously accompanied by significant low- ering of the original impurities. It is shown, for example, that treatment at 1000¦C for 30 min. can reduce the Zn content from 0.98% to 0.0065% and K and Na contents from 0.19% and 0.76% respectively, to less than 0.01%. However, pellet strength at 1000¦C was low but this, as shown in the paper, can be very significantly improved by treatment at 1250¦C. The results indicate that the reduction of the waste oxide pellets of this investigation proceeds almost certainly by a chain reaction mechanism and that this principle could be advantageously extended to the reduction of iron ores and other oxides in general.

A two-dimensional finite element modelling technique is applied to predict the subsidence movements on a sloping ground surface above a completely mined panel. The modelling is carried out for the surface both directly and using a combination of an equivalent horizontal surface and a rays projection method and the result compared. The rays projection method provides the subsidence components on a sloping surface from the corresponding ones on an assumed equivalent horizontal surface through the point of mean elevation of the relevant part of the sloping surface. This method is used next to compare the subsidences, horizontal displacements and horizontal strains from the mining of a given panel at the surface for different inclinations. The results show that the magnitudes of the subsidence components are greater on the dip side of the slope from the point of the mean elevation, than the corresponding ones on the rise side and the asymmetry increases with the inclination of the surface. The findings are also compared with those of other research Workers.

This paper traces briefly the reasoning which led to the decision to extend the existing internal shaft at the Rosebery Mine and to instal underground a larger winder (No. 2 Hoist) with capacity to handle all hoisting requirements to a depth of approximately 2,500 ft. on an incline varying from 83" to 55" to the horizontal. It then covers the specifications and selection of the winder, the design of the winch chamber, rope raise and bins, the excavation, support and lining of the chambers and the transport to site and installation of the machinery. Finally a brief description is given of the mechanical and electrical parts of the winder.INTRODUCTIONThe existing shaft winder on the internal inclined shaft situated on No. 8 Level of the Rosebery Mine had reached the limit of its capacity. Hoisting 21-ton capacity skips in balance, with a 13/16-in. diameter rope, it required four layers of rope on the 3 ft. 6 in.drums to reach the loading station under No. 12 level at a depth of 864 ft. (Fig. 1). This entailed heavy wear on the multi-layered rope and heavy stresses on the cheeks of the drums. Continuous working on three shifts was necessary to handle ore, men and materials, and a hold-up from any cause whatever meant an interruption to production on the lower levels of the mine. The maximum output of the hoist whilst hoisting from the No. 12 level loading station was 50 tons per hour. It was obvious therefore, that a larger winder was required if output was to be maintained.Diamond drilling had proved the existence of sufficient ore at depths well below No. 12 to warrant exploitation and a decision had to be reached on the means of hoisting this ore.

THE John Darling Colliery, owned by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited, is situated 12 miles south of Neweastle, NSW and about 1 mile from the ocean. The area of the holding is approximately 10,000 acres, about half of which underlies the Pacific Ocean. The area was proved to be coal bearing by diamond drill boring: this method not only proved the coal to exist, but gave the depths from which could be calculated. It also proved the existence or otherwise of heavy faulting, which is a very important factor in the design of the underground lay-out of a mine. The location of shafts had to be carefuIly studied, and, before final selection, the following salient points had to be considered:Railway communications.Flood waters.Boiler feed water.Surface buildings.Probability of coal washing.Underground haulage arrangements.Lengths of roadways from a ventilating viewpoint.Before the shaft sites were finally selected, an underground design was prepared to determine the direction of the main drives in relation to the boundaries of the holding, and the of the coal seam: the latter, being an important factor in this particular locality, was ascertained by a geological survey of rock outcrops in the neighbourhood. In 1939 at the annual meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science, held at Canberra, a paper was contributed by E. de C: Clarke and H. A. Ellist in which a plea was made for more "facts" concerning metasomatism near ore-bodies in Western Australia. From time to time writers here, and in other parts of the world, have discussed the alterations in wall rocks of various reefs and lodes, but little has yet been attempted in the matter of accumulation of quantitative data, both chemical and mineralogical, and in the correlation and comparative study of this data. Such a detailed comparative study is needed to determine the economic value of a practical application of our accumulated knowledge of the phenomena of metasomatism.When in 1939 the opportunity offered for an examination of the core from 4 bores recently put down by the Big Bell Mines Ltd., to explore the ore-body of the Corinthian G.M. 10 miles N.W. of Southern Cross, Western Australia it was hoped that some small beginnings might be made of an accumulation of comparative and quantitative data regarding the metasomatism of the wall rock immediately adjacent to this ore-body.By the courtesy of the Big Bell Mines Ltd., the core from the 4 bores was delivered to Survey Headquarters, Perth;in the middle of June, 1939 and copies of assay plans of part of the underground workings at Corinthian, and of the results of assays of the bore cores, were also supplied by the management of the above company.It was not, however, until March, 1940, that it was 'found possible to investigate the core. Shaft guide reaetions in No. 2 Ore Shaft, Mount Isa Mines Limited, have been reduced to a low order of magnitude by the use of self aligning slippers and spring loaded guide rollers. Before commissioning the new 4500 h.p. winder at No. 2 Ore Shaft in January, 1958, it was realised that the increase in hoisting speed from 1800 to 2650 ft/min. would cause high shaft guide reactions which would be increased further when the elongated 12 ton skips replaced the existing 7 ton skips.The Cambridge accelerometer was used to measure the shaft guide reactions and to confirm that progressive skip modifications were resulting in reduced reactions. The skip modifications were completed in 4 weeks.INTRODUCTIONIn 1956 an expansion programme was initiated to increase production from 5000 to 11000 tons per mining day. At No. 2 Ore Shaft the 1500 h.p. winder operated at 1800 ft./min. and hoisted a 7 ton capacity skip. The new 4500 h.p. winder operates at 2650 ft./min. and hoists a 12 ton capacity skip. No. 2 Ore shaft is equipped with two 5 ft. by 5 ft. hoisting compartments (Fig. 1) and any increase in skip capacity meant an abnormally long skip. This feature, coupled with the increase in hoisting speed, could have caused very high shaft guide reactions. Before commissioning the 4500 h.p. winder, a Cambridge accelerometer was borrowed from the University of Adelaide and was used to measure the shaft guide reactions. Rather than carry out an extensive shaft timbering programme, the skips were modified by fitting cushioned guide shoes and spring loaded guide rollers (Fig. 1). Testing commenced in February, 1958, and was completed in March, 1958.

The reduction of zinc from lead blast furnace slags using hydrogen was studied at 1300¦C as part of a laboratory investigation of zinc fuming. To perform the experiments, 300 g "spent slag" was melted in a crucible. Hydrogen was then injected into the slag through a lance and fresh blast furnace slag was added regularly in small quantities over a period of 40 minutes. Zinc added in the fresh slag was reduced and the zinc level of the bulk slag attained a steady state value of between 1 and 9% after about 10 minutes, depending on the gas injection rate. Because of the high reactivity of hydrogen, bulk supply of hydrogen to the slag was the rate limiting step at the flow rates used and it is believed that the gas-slag reactions in the system were at equilibrium. A partially/stabilized zirconia cell with a Ni/NiO reference electrode was immersed in the slags during the experiments and the steady/state oxygen potentials of the slags were measured. By using the experimental oxygen potential values and calculated values of the steady state concentrations of zinc in the offgas, the activity of ZnO in the slags was calculated from the Gibbs's free energy change for the reaction:

Lateritic nickel ore occurs as a supergene or residual deposit as a result of the tropical weathering of underlying ultramafic rocks. The mineralisation may be as hydrated Ni-Mg silicates, like garnierite (silicate ore); or as hydrated Ni-Fe oxide (oxide) ore. Non-sulphide ore represents only 30% of the tonnage mined, but represents 85% of the total world's nickel reserves. A typical lateritic profile consists of 4 zones above the unweathered ultramafic parent rock: Zone 1: the "upper laterite" which is dark red-brown, porous and concentrically structured. It contains 0.2 to 0.8% Ni, 48.0 to 72.0% Fe, and 0 to 9.5% MgO. It is often capped by a ferricrete crust. Zone 2: the "middle laterite", which is red-brown to light brown and more porous than the above zone. It contains 0.8 to 1.5% Ni, 42.0 to 48.0% Fe and 0.5 to 6.0% MgO. The five main ways in which coal is used are1. for electricity generation,2. as a lump fuel for domestic and industrial purposes,3. for gas making,4. for making carbon for chemical and metallurgicalindustry, and5. as a source of coal tar and coal-tar chemicals.In the past about 80 per cent of Victoria's brown coal has been used for power generation and the rest for making a lump fuel, in the form of briquettes. Some of these briquettes have been used for gas making, and a carbon industry based on them has recently been commenced, and could expand rapidly. However the enormous increases expected in power requirements, approximately a doubling every 10 years, will ensure that even if the manufacture of carbon increases dramatically and a large amount of coal is used for other purposes, the brown coal industry will always be dominated by power generation. As new fuels such as natural gas, oil, and nuclear fuel become available at competitive prices these will take their share of the power generation load.Natural gas or oil, or possibly pumped storage hydro, will almost certainly be used for all future peak-load stations, comprising around 40 per cent of the total installed generating capacity, but new base load stations will continue to be designed for brown coal operation until about the mid-1980s, by which time nuclear power stations will become competitive. By this time Victoria will have installed about 6000 MW capacity of brown coal stations, burning around 50 million tons/year of coal, compared with 18 million tons/year at present, with perhaps 15 million tons/year being used for other purposes.This consumption of 65 million tons/year should then remain fairly stable over the life of the power stations installed, well into the 21st century. Brown coal therefore appears to have an assured place in providinga major part of Victoria's fuel requirements, despite the diversification in fuel usage pattern which appears certain to occur with the recent developments in new fuel resources.

The development and operation of three large open cut brown coal mines in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia, requires a wide range of drilling techniques for coal resource evaluation and stratigraphic defi- nition, material property identification, open cut dewatering, and instal- lation of groundwater monitoring bores. This paper describes in detail the range of drilling techniques, equip- ment used and associated problems with drilling, in a deep sedimentary basin containing several major brown coal seams, multiple aquifer sys- tems of varying pressures and thin layers of hard materials including pyrite, siderite and basalt. Methods of rotary drilling include wireline core drilling, conventional core drilling, conventional flush drilling, diamond core drilling, reverse circulation air lift drilling and bucket auger drilling. Cable tool drilling is also used for strata definition and aquifer sampling.

As part of a broad program to optimise the performance of their grinding circuit, BHP Billiton Cannington have installed an OCS¬ Expert system together with three VisioRockÖ online particle size analysis cameras. The main purpose of the system is to stabilise grind size and feed to the flotation circuit. This particular application of OCS¬ is the first installation to incorporate Metso Minerals Process Technology-Asia PacificÆs (MMPT-AP) Dynamic SAG/AG Mill Model, which is able to predict numerous mill parameters that were previously unable to be measured with the existing plant instrumentation. Integrated into the logic of the control algorithm are online vision based, particle size measurements of the AG mill feed and recycle crusher product. This paper will describe the history of the project from initiation to date, the model and OCS¬ logic configuration, and demonstrate the significant benefits realised at Cannington mine.

Based on twenty years of experiences of applying computers in mine water engineering in Hungary, a program package was developed for home utilization and for other users abroad as well. This program package has been adapted to the CAD System of Coal Mining of COMECON countries. The main features of the "mine water subsystem" in the CAD System of Coal Mining and short descriptions of the key programs of the package are presented in this paper. Foreword The serious water problems of Hungarian mining pressed and/or stimulated its professionals to apply computers for supporting their problem-solutions. The first trials of these computer applications in mine water engineering were dated from the sixties. Owing to its twenty years of experiences in computer appli- cations in mine water engineering the Central Institute for the Development of Mining in Hungary was requested to work out the "Subsystem of Mine Water" for the Computer Aided Design System ('CAD) of Coal Mines in COMECON countries. This paper gives a brief presentation on the main features of this "subsystem"with reference to significant components.

The Bureau of Mines, with a history of mining research since 1910, still seeks improvement in safety and health along with improvement and competitiveness in the mining industry. Much promise of such improvements lies in new technology, and this is particularly the case in the still growing coal mine sector, although much Bureau research is long term, high risk, aimed at new concepts.The miner's environment is a primary concern, involving technologies of contaminant monitoring and control in high production scenarios. Contaminants arising from diesel use, alternatives to high speed rotary cutting and more efficient dust removal are being addressed, and drilling efficiencies, better monitoring through unitising operations and insitu rock dust monitoring are particular features.

The use of long-hole in-seam drilling techniques for seam gas drainage ahead of mining was introduced to the Australian coal industry by ACIRL in mid-1981. ACIRL's research program has involved the development and demonstration of drilling and borehole survey technology in addition to evaluating the gas drainage potential of long-hole in- seam boreholes. This paper presents the results of the long-hole drilling carried out to date in the Illawarra District of the New South Wales coal fields. Drilling experience in relation to both vertical and horizontal directional control of the drill string, drill performance and borehole survey techniques are discussed. In addition, results of gas drainage effected by the long boreholes are presented. Future potential and requirements for further development of this technology are Reviewed.
