The purpose of this paper is to present a detailed account of the development of the Blasthole Diamond Drilling method of stoping now used at the property of Big Bell Mines Limited, in Western Australia.The ore body is one of the large low grade gold deposits of this State, being a continuous lens 1,850 ft. long and ranging in width from 15 ft. at the ends to 120 ft. at the widest part, the average width being 59 ft. It was first worked in 1913 by a local syndicate, and up to 1924, when operations ceased, 64,448 tons of 3.4 dwt. ore were mined from a shallow open cut. Between 1928 and 1932, 15 deep diamond drill holes were put down to test the ore body at vertical depths ranging from 100 to 700 ft. On the information gained from these drill holes, Premier Gold Mining Co. Ltd. began underground explQration. A level was driven at a depth of 253 ft. and crosscuts put out to the full width of the, orebody at intervals of 100 ft. along the strike, all ore broken being put through a sampling plant. On completion of this sampling,' Big Bell Mines Limited was formed as the operating company, and a plant with a capacity of 1,000 long tons per day was erected and mining and milling operations were commenced in 1937. FaulIing west of the Mount Isa mine is described and is shown to be related to three groups of folds that have been recognized in the area. The first period of faulting postdates the first generation folding; these faulIs are regional faults (tectonic discontinuities) which are folded by second generation folds. The faulting accompanying the second generation folding divides the area west of the Mount Isa mine into four structurally and metamorphically identifiable blocks. The most prominent of these second generation faults is the Mount Isa Fault, which is characterized by a number of distinct zones of intense second generation folding and the presence of localized layers of mylonite. Only limited evidence for brittle deformation has been observed and the major movement appears to be associated with the plastic deformation of the rocks. Confined to the areas of second generation folding in the Mount Isa Fault are numerous third generation kink folds. A detailed description of the Mount Isa and other faulIs is presented together with evidence for their existence. The displacement accompanying this faulting cannot be established because of the complexity of the structure.Postdating these faults and all the folding of the area are minor cross faults.

The interaction of man with the environment has a double character. From one side, mankind can not exist without co- nsuming the natural resources and, from the other side, we actively alter and exert influence upon nature. Analysis reveals that the ecological problem is, to a great extent, a geological one. The paper deals with the application of grouting techniques to construct impermeable barriers for the protection of ground water and soils from depletion and industrial wastes pollution. A number of case histories in the field of mine construction is given to illustrate the solution of geotechnical problems in concert with environ- mental protection measures.

This paper deals briefly with three of the more controversial aspects of the geology of the Mount Isa ore deposits namely the geologic structures, the method of ore deposition and the origin of the ore.In the section on geologic structures, an outline is first given of the purely tectonic deformation advocated by the early authors. The current interpretation, which differs in the proposed order of events and causal forces, is then discussed. Other concepts, which attribute all or part of the deformation to sedimentary features or preconsolidation movement, are outlined ilnd commented on.The remaining two sections deal mainly with the better known lead-zinc orebodies. In the first of these a brief description and criticism is given of the early interpretation which was based on the deposition of successive waves of mineralisation which replacedindividual beds in the shales. The current ideas, which visualise emplacement of the ore between the beds rather than replacement of them, is then discussed. The final section develops the case for a sedimentary origin of the lead-zinc ores and broadly outlines the author's ideas concerning the evolution of the Mount Isa ore deposits.INTRODUCTIONAny consideration of the geology of Mount Isa must begin with the work of Blanchard and continue with that of Hall. Individually, or as co-authors, they published various papers on the geology of Mount Isa. Of these, the best known is their "Rock Deformation and Mineralisation at Mount Isa" (1941) which gave a comprehensive account of all aspects of Mount Isa geology.It is necessary to appreciate the limits set on geological knowledge of the mine and environs in 1941 by the extent of mine development and regional geologic studies. As our mines introduce more sophisticated production technology into their operations, the dependence on communication systems is markedly increased to allow the management of the technology. However the attention given to the communication systems has lagged that given the production equipment - namely LHDs, trucks and jumbos. At times it was treated as after thought. However, this is changing as the degree of automation increases in our mines. The communication system is now being given much more priority and is genuinely becoming a part of the mine design. The transfer of information around underground, as well as between the surface and underground, is an essential day-to-day activity, with the aim being a smoothly run operation. However the mine environment is far from static, and situations arise - such as breakdowns or other incidents - that require swift analysis of the issue, its cause and its remedy. Also, as communication systems become more sophisticated their use in areas, other than direct data flow, become available. The importance of communication, its development, and new areas being impacted by communication is the subject of this Paper.

When a thin film of volatile matter is deposited under vacuum on a polished coal surface, and the coated surface is examined microscopically in piano--polarized reflected light, colour changes are observed characteristic of the various macerals present. The colour changes appear to be mainly due to interference between light reflected at the upper surface of the film and at the film/coal interface. A variety of source materials for the volatile matter required have been tested, including powdered bituminous coal, coal tars, boron oxide, and certain resins.

Fluid inclusions within quartz accompanying several stages of mineralization at Hillgrove are de cri bed. Pyrite-arsenopyrite-gold mineralization shows uncorrected filling temperatures of between 195°C and 250°C. Later stibnite-antimonide-siderite and stibnite-calcite mineralization has filling temperatures between 100°C and 195°C and a bimodal distribution of temperature peaking at 175°C and 145°C, possibly correlated with the two stages of mineral deposition. Secondary included fluids within an earlier generation of deformed quartz veins are derived from hydrothermal fluids contemporary with the main-stage mineralizing fluids described above. Primary inclusions within latestage, cross-cutting quartz-chlorite-calcite veins show these veins to be unrelated to the mineralization.A correlation between filling temperatures and salinities indicates that mineralization accompanied the mixing of a hot, partly saline, fluid (at 5 per cent equivalent NaCI) with cooler, less-saline meteoric or connate water. Over a vertical distance of 200 m, equivalent mineral assemblages were deposited over the same temperature range. Studies on single crystals suggest rapid deposition with fluid temperature dropping 45°C during their growth. Ore mineragraphy and the fluid inclusion data suggest that the metals were transported by sulphur-poor, relatively low-temperature, low-salinity solutions, possibly as carbonate complexe , and that a vertical zonation of the W-Sb-Au mineralization is compatible with the mixing of this hydrothermal fluid with cooler groundwater. Regional metallogenic and geological considerations suggest that ore metals are derived from the remobilization of deep-seated stratabound deposits or from metamorphic fluids expelled from deepseated volcanoclastic sediments.

Due to operational and regulatory practicalities, pit lakes will continue to be legacies of many open cut mining lease relinquishments. Unplanned or inappropriate management of these significant geographical features may lead to a short-term liability to all stakeholders during mining operations, or to ongoing liability to the local community and environment following lease relinquishment. However, the potential for pit lakes to provide benefit to companies, communities and the environment is frequently unrecognised and yet may be a vital contribution to the sustainability of the open cut mining industry. Improved remediation technologies are offering more avenues for pit lake end use than ever before, at the same time mining companies, local communities and regulatory authorities are also becoming more aware of the benefit these water resources have to offer. Sustainable pit lake management aims to better minimise short- and long-term pit lake liabilities, and yet also to maximise short- and long-term pit lake opportunities as well.

EQUIPMENT TO BE DISCUSSED It is the intention of this paper to discuss the transporting of large skid mounted equipment and track machines around open cut mines. By large I mean 100 to 350 tonne capacity being trans- ported on minesite lowloaders and the capability of moving loads of 300 to 1200 tonne by other means. It is also possible to move larger loads. The main factor in transporting large loads is eco- nomics and is a balance between the cost of the transporter and the increased production from the equipment being moved. For example it could be possible to shift a 7000 tonne dragline faster than their own means of propulsion, being the "walking feet" method. However for the cost of $10 to $12,000,000.00 or more you can afford to walk the dragline and suffer the production loss. Let us concentrate on the economically realistic. BOSICH FBT MINESITE LOWLOADERS 100 TO 350 TONNE CAPACITY. Why initially consider having such a transporter? Our experience has shown that initial enquiries evolve from mines requiring to move large drills, 50 to 200 tonne weight and large hydraulic excavators or backhoes which are track mounted. The reason for shifting them is to move equipment from a mining face to enable blasting, to remove to the central workshop for repairs, overhauls and routine maintenance, to transport equip- ment from one mine face to another, and for drills, to move from one drilling pattern to the next. The cost in terms of time lost and extra wear on tracked equip- ment easily justifies the cost of the transporter. The tracks on large drills and shovels are not intended for long distance walk- ing. These tracks are designed to move the machines to position for drill holes, or moving around the mine face. Long distance travel, ie generally 1 km or more, results in overheating of track rollers, track drive components and accelerated wear on tracks.

Measurements of the rate of PbO reduction from high lead metallurgical slags were made under laboratory conditions using graphite, a CO-50%CO2 gas mixture and metallic iron as reductants. The results show a transition in rate-controlling step at low PbO contents (i.e. 6 wt.% PbO). At medium to high PbO contents in the slag, the reduction rate was found to be strongly affected by the slag chemistry, temperature and reductant type. The effect of stirring and hence mass transfer in the slag phase on the reduction rate of PbO was found to be insignificant at medium-high PbO contents. Attention is drawn to the importance of chemically controlled reaction rates at the slag-gas interface. Parallels between these results and test work on a 5 tph scale have been briefly drawn.

Working thick coal seams in Poland is a very serious problem. Nearly 40 per cent of all coal is extracted from seams more than 3 m. thick. In absolute figures this represents about 70 million tons of coal per year. Working seams with thicknesses up to 3.5 m. does not present, at present, major difficul- ties. Working thicker seams calls for a steady improvement in order to increase the degree of utilization of the deposit and to enlarge the concentration of output. The problem is sometimes more difficult because, in many cases, the seams are worked under protected surface structures which compels the mines to use hydraulic stowing with all its advantages and disadvantages. Rock burst hazard, the control of which is the basic problem hindering the mining, is a further problem. The mining systems used in Poland are adapted to these natural and technical conditions.

Concentrates produced from MnO2 and Fe203 ore fines have been targeted as potential feedstocks for direct metallurgical processing. Prereduction of pyrolusite-rich Mn02 sands to MnO has been investigated in batch and continuous experimental bubbling fluidised beds using CO-H2 reducing gas mixtures. This process has been found to produce a high grade feedstock suitable for smelting to ferroalloys or acid digestion for chemicals production. Similarly, production of highly metallised direct reduced iron (DRI) from hematite ore fines has also been investigated in batch bubbling bed reactors. Programs to characterise the reduction kinetics, fluidisation behaviour and defluidisation phenomena for both feedstocks are currently in progress to enable optimum process conditions to be determined.

Powercoal Pty Ltd operates eight underground coal mines in New South Wales and produces coal for both domestic power stations and the export market. Approximately 40% of total production is from continuous miners. Over the past five years, place change mining methods have been introduced to improve productivity from continuous miners. This has involved utilising the existing coal clearance system from the continuous miner to the ratio feeder using trailing cable shuttle cars.By late 1996 average productivity at Cooranbong Colliery using this system had plateaued at 800 tonnes per eight hour shift. A number of factors were identified to increase average productivity to 1500 tonnes per eight hour shift. An improved coal clearance system was one of the factors identified.

The iron ore mining operations carried out by Goldsworthy Mining Limited at Golds- worthy, Shay Gap and Sunrise Hill, in the Pilbara region of the North-West of Western Australia, are unusual insofar as the ore reserves occur in a number of widely separated and relatively small deposits, requiring deep mining below the water table, and even below sea level at the Goldsworthy pit. This paper has been prepared to describe some of the problems associated with these deep open cut mines, and the technology employed to overcome them, in order to provide an efficient and economical operation. The problems discussed are: 1. Development of the Dewatering System for the Goldsworthy Mine. 2. The Stability of Pit Slopes at the Goldsworthy and Shay Gap Mines. 3. Development of Diesel Electric Trucks for Lonq Uphill Hauls.

Two tunnels are being bored using a æHydroshieldÆ in section 3.1 of the extension of the Underground railway line 5. At the end of the two tunnels, directly in front of the Hotel Adlon, the shields cannot be retrieved. The steel shell of the shield will be left in place within a sealed concrete block and the reusable components taken out through the completed tunnel. For the first time in Germany, an Underground tunnel is being lined solely by means of UNI rings. BerlinÆs Underground network is 165 km long and has 167 stations. Some 450 million passengers are transported annually. On account of the urban planning modifications that followed reunification, the network has to be adjusted, particularly in the city centre. The most significant project is the extension of the U5 from Alexanderplatz to the Lehrter Bahnhof. After completion, the U5 will be a continuous east-west traffic artery. It will provide a direct link with the new parliamentary and government district, open up new business districts and the cultural centre of the city.

The treatment plant of the Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie Ltd. is situated on the Oroya South Lease, on the Eastern edge of the Kalgoorlie Golden Mile.It was designed and erected by Messrs. Alex. Stewart and Company, in consultation with Mr. Harry Hey, and was completed in November, 1937.Its original capacity was 9,000 tons of all-sulphide ore per calendar month, l?ut the plant was extended in October, 1939, to treat 13,000 to 14,000 tons per month of mixed sulphide and oxidised ore.Recovery of the gold is accomplished by cyanide treatment, followed by flotation of the cyanided residue, roasting and cyanidation of flotation concentrate and precipitation of the gold from the cyanide solutions. In the cyanide section, the crushed ore is finely ground in cyanide ,solution and the pulp is agitated to dissolve further gold. It is then thickened and filtered. In the flotation section, this filter residue is conditioned with S02 gas and a pyrite-gold concentrate recovered by flotation.This concentrate is roasted and then cyanided.KALGOORLIE ORE DEPOSIT.The Kalgoorlie ore deposit occurs within a wide area of Pre-Cambrian rocks, ,and consists essentially of two series of basic igneous rocks known as the older greenstone series (calc schist) and the younger greenstone series (quartzdolerite- greenstone) . The mining, metallurgical, and petroleum industries can be viewed as financial or as social institutions or both. The differences between these two conceptions of their businesses will influence their environmental and social actions. During the next 10-20 years western industry will be subject to a drop in the growth of a more highly educated labour force and to the emergence of holistic economics, new national goals, and a new ecological perspective. The profitability of the mining industry may therefore be influenced by the human side of its business to a greater degree. The increas- ing human, social, and environmental responsibilities can be discharged by improving the miner's equip- ment; by learning to look at situations through the eyes of all those involved; by developing common `languages' which governments and the public can understand; and by mediating where feasible on the international scene.

With the economic trend towards reduced capital spend, more stakeholders are focusing on improved operational efficiency and productivity. Advancements in achieving the optimum dollar-per-tonnage will be more dependent on creating a logistics system that is well balanced and economically optimised. Critical to predicting a successful business case is the ability to accurately define capacity, realistically increase throughput and proactively translate objectives into design and operating requirements. Failure to do this will create an unrealistic perception of capacity and performance for the export corridor. This transition requires a fundamental understanding of the drivers that impact capacity, cost and value across the entire logistics chain. Through examples, this paper will identify the contextual requirements for simulation models that assist decision-makers and stakeholders to more clearly understand the implications of decisions that will define capacity and operational performance. This paper is concerned with two case histories of wastewater quality management in underground coal mines in the Illawarra region. The first investigation briefly presents an analysis of mine water discharge having an extremely high concentration of suspended solids and consistently high barium concentrations, averaging, 14.4 mg/I Barium, over the sampling period. A laboratory study of chemical precipitation processes has indicated that about 91% of barium could be removed by using ferric sulphate and lime. On the basis of the information obtained from the environmental audit process an alternative water treatment and reuse system incorporating 51% reduction in the water consumption with 32% less off-site discharge has been suggested (Thomas, 1995).The second case history is concerned with the storm water management at a mine situated in the Illawarra escarpment where only 20% of the wastewater generated in the colliery is discharged off-site. Computer modelling of the storm water system showed that 75% of the clean runoff becomes contaminated through poor management practices and causes the process wastewater treatment system to fail in wet weather. Suggested improvements include relatively simple alteration to the coal wash filtration dams which are expected to reduce the periods of inefficient operation of these dams by 95%. The use of storm water diversion channels and detention basins can reduce the overflow volumes by 70 - 100 % for a ten year ARI (Average Recurrence Interval) storm event (Wingrove 1996).

The stratigraphic sequence west of Mount Isa contains the Judenan Beds, Eastern Creek Volcanics, and May Downs gneiss. It is an incomplete sequence as major north-south faults divide the area into four separatezones containing portions of these different units. The first three zones, which occur directly to the west of the Mount Isa Fault, consist of quartzites and quartz-mica schists which are uncorrelatable between zones but have been grouped together as the Judenan Beds. The most western zone contains an incomplete section of Eastern Creek Volcanics which rests conformably on a unit believed to be equivalent to the Mount Guide Quartzite; this is again underlain by the May Downs gneiss. A detailed description of the rock types is presented, but only a broad stratigraphic correlation is possible with the very much thicker sequence to the east of Mount Isa.The age of sedimentation is believed to be Lower Proterozoic and it may not occur in the type of geosynclinal basin envisaged by previous authors.This sequence is intruded by many small basic intrusions and also the Sybella Granite with its associated microgranite and pegmatites. The Sybella Granite consists of both a massive and a foliated phase; the latteris generally restricted to the margin of the main granite mass.Four regional metamorphic zones have been identified on the basis of their pelitic mineral assemblages; these are a chlorite, biotite, biotite-cordierite, and a sillimanite zone; separating each are prominent north-south faults.This metamorphism is a regional metamorphism which accompanies the first generation folding of the area and is not associated with the emplacement of the Sybella Granite. A very localized retrogressive metamorphism is also found in some areas of second generation folding.
