The aim of this paper is to examine the problems confronting the planner, designer, constructor and management when rehabilitating the works associated with road building- and including quarry and borrow areas. The importance of further investigation into the many factors involved, including species, methods of planting and aftercare is stressed as is the need for trained personnel and the consequential availability of specialised training courses. Emphasis is placed upon the relevance of a rational and unemotional approach to rehabilitation with respect to the landscape and to the high degree of co-ordination and co-operation between all disciplines involved.

There is a vast amount of geotechnical data, which can be obtained during exploration programs at new and existing mine sites. Additional information on the performance of the in-situ rock mass can be obtained from bore cores, which are usually only geologically logged and then stored. A computer based data management system for storage and retrieval of geotechnical data has been developed to access and manipulate such data.

This paper is intended to continue the subject in the light of recent work, from where it was left at the conclusion of the discussion on the excellent paper by the late Mr. Noel Haszard. The position then obtaining is briefly summarised below:-The points which received general agreement at that time were:-'(1) That the gold occurs, probably in an elemental form, in a state of very fine division in the pyrite.(2) That the aim in roasting of Kalgoorlie flotation concentrates should be to obtain the maximum porosity possible. The gold tellurides were amenable to treatment with either a' solution of high lime and cyanide strength combined with fine grinding, or bybromocyanidation without re-grinding.(3) That a low roasting temperature is essential during the elimination of the first atom of sulphur, if the final calcine is to give a good extraction by cyanidation.(4) Even with the best temperature conditions of roasting then determined, and after a period of cyanidation of the calcines until no further extraction was obtainable, the lowest calcine residues obtainable were equivalent to approximately 1·8 dwts. per long ton, based on an original concentrate of pure pyrite.There was some division of opinion at the time as to whether the temperature of the later stages of roasting was significant, and also as to the reason why the initial roasting temperatures had so marked an effect.

This paper describes the general approach to ore reserve estimation and mine planning used at the Kidston Gold Mine. The geological setting and exploration is briefly summarized for background information.A geostatistical study of the deposit was carried out to determine the geological ore reserve. This was confirmed using a manual polygonal technique. Optimum pits outlined by a Lerchs-Grossman open pit design algorithm were manually smoothed allowing mineable reserves to be calculated. Mine production schedules based on kriged block grades and tonnages are continuously updated using production blasthole assays. An arithmetic mean technique of block grade estimation has proved successful to date. After milling approximately 4.9Mt of ore, the mill grade of 2.13g Au/t is only 0.5% above the mine estimate of 2.12g Au/t. The difference in contained gold between "As staked" blasthole reserves and kriged mineable reserves is 3.8%. The application of blasthole kriging as a basis for ore/waste classification in erratically mineralized areas is being evaluated. Planned future developments are briefly mentioned.

This is the second of a series of papers dealing with Geology in Exploration. The first, published by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Proceedings Nos. 143-144, 1946, was written as an introduction to the subject and employed the exploration geology of the Cobar field to illustrate the prospect thinking. This paper will be concerned with the problem of ore repetition in depth and borrow its- example from the Mount Lyell copper field. The writing will be taken up altogether by the example. Nevertheless the intention remains to develop the subject in terms of its wide interest and application.The Mount Lyell field possesses large actual and prospective resources within, and in the vicinity of, the known deposits. This paper does not bear at all on these accessible ore reserves and tangible prospects. There is also in this area evidence of deep ore. The possibility is of little practical interest at present. But the picture of ore repetition, exemplified by the Mount Lyell field, does matter now to the outlook on exploration in this country. For once this essential feature of ore occurrence is widely understood there may develop, on the scale warranted, the search for major deposits which do not outcrop but which are still at shallow depths because of the part erosion plays in this story of concealment and exposure of ore. Also there is the chance in some fields (including Mount Lyell) of a second harvest of orebodies within mineable depths. This exploration goal, introduced in the first paper, will appear more clearly as the Geology in Exploration series is written up. Here the concern is to show the character of the geological evidence which points to the occurrence and recurrence of ore in the earth's crust, the picture at the foundation of this exploration scheme. Acclaimed as one of the most remarkable orebodies anywhere on account of its length and richness, the Oroya Shoot occurs on the eastern side of the Kalgoorlie gold mining district close to the contact of a fine-grained with a coarse-grained greenstone, and in association with sediments. In the same stratigraphic position on the synclinal flanks of a large drag fold there are a number of other flat ore pipes, smaller, but almost as rich in tenor. Although differing in control structure they are believed to be related genetically as all show a characteristic development of a bright-green ore known locally as "green leader". Folding and bedding structures have played an important part in formation of the ore shoots.INTRODUCTIONThe Oroya Shoot is the biggest individual bonanza of Kalgoorlie's Golden Mile. It has been stoped almost continuously over a length of 4,300 ft., and about 2,000,000 oz. of gold have been won from it. Naturally pillars are not left in the best sections of such an orebody and the detailed geology of stoped out portions can only be inferred from examination of adjacent workings.No mention is made in the literature of the actual makeup of the orebody although a few structures are shown on some of the old cross sections. A diagrammatic cross section, Fig. 1, adapted from Stillwell (1929) illustrates the form of the Oroya Shoot.Gustafson (1937) drew attention to the role of folding, previously unrecognized, in Kalgoorlie geology, and indicated that the Oroya Shoot is associated with a minor drag fold on the east limb of the Brownhill Syncline, itself part of a larger left hand drag on the Central Anticline. The latter in turn appears to be part of a regional right hand fold system as shown by Campbell (1953).

The Dolphin Scheelite orebody is located near the old mining town of Grassy on the south-east comer of King Island in Tasmania. Surface open cut mining of the Dolphin deposit was conducted for a number of years, then the proximity of the sea and adverse stipping ratio led to underground mining. As a result of the variable orientation and dimensions of parts of the orebody a number of mining methods were practiced at the Dolphin mine until 1990 when a combination of high processing and surface site costs coupled with low tungsten prices led to the cessation of operations. In this paper the different mining methods practised are examined and critically reviewed. The more successful mining methods were developed with experience and improving equipment technology to the extent that the underground operation produced ore at the lowest unit cost during the final years of operation.

Iron ore mineralisation in the Paraburdoo environs is known to extend almost continuously over a strike length of 55 kilometres. Six formations of the Mount Bruce Supergroup con- tain high grade mineralisation in varying degrees of importance. Ore is currently being mined from the Joffre and Dales Gorge Members of the Brockman Iron Formation, with smaller, less significant amounts, occasionally taken from the lowermost units of the Weeli Wolli Formation and the upper parts of the Mount McRae Shale. Regional mapping has demonstrated the existance locally of a major unconformity at the base of the Wyloo Group sediments out- cropping south of the minesite. The basal con- glomerates at the unconformity are sometimes mineralised at Paraburdoo. A supergene enrich- ment process controlled by structure, strati- graphy and topography is the only one which can satisfactorily explain the disposition and chemistry of the Paraburdoo iron orebodies.

The problem of automatic control of a coal mine ventilation network is discussed. It is found that the structure of the control sys-tem should have two levels, i.e. local regulation of ventilation para-meters (air flows) in faces to eliminate the effect of quick disturba-noes, and supervisory control of the whole ventilation process by pe-riodical modifications to the working characteristics of the main fans. Practical and theoretical problems connected with implementation of the system in Polish mining are listed and discussed. To solve these prob-lems a series of experiments with air flow control in three different coal faces were carried-out with the aim of checking the measuring and control equipment in a real mine conditions as well as investigatingthe gasodynamics of the ventilation process. The results of the experi-ments are analysdd, and used to verify the mathematical model of the gasodynamics of a longwall face.

May I, at the very outset of this second gathering, congratulate the Institute on the great progress that has been made in the interval. At the first meeting in New Zealand in the year 1903, I understand that less than 20 persons were present, and now in the large concourse before me I believe there are not fewer than 140 persons, while if every member of the Institute to-day where here there would be over 500 which is a great change from a membership of only 250 in 1903. This paper discusses why Argyle Diamonds adopted thickened tailings disposal in 1985 and how the system was developed over the next seven years. A wide ranging review of the thickened tailings disposal system and the tailings deposit it was producing was carried out during 1992 and 1993. The results of that review led to the abandonment of thickened tailings disposal at Argyle because of serious concerns about the stability of the resultant tailings deposit. The exposure to the risk of liquefaction and an assessment of the consequences if this happened to the thickened tailings deposit are shown. The criteria for selecting the new tailings disposal strategy are then described. The final section of the paper discusses the management strategies that have been put in place. These are designed to: ò reduce the risk posed by the thickened tailings deposit to an acceptable level; ò safely store tailings to the end of mine life; ò produce a land form that can be decommissioned to the satisfaction of Government regulatory bodies.

Bivariate recoverable resource estimation aims at predicting the recovered metal for a secondary variable when a cut-off is applied to a primary variable. The choice of a consistent geostatistical model is advisable to allow a robust estimation from exploration data of the primary and secondary metal recovery functions on a generic selection block (selective mining unit û SMU) within large panels. Ore processing decisions at Lihir Gold LimitedÆs Lihir Gold Mine are based on the gold and sulfur estimates of SMUs from production (grade control) data. The predictive model from exploration data at Lihir is based on the estimation of a recoverable resource for gold by Uniform Conditioning (UC), with an estimate of the sulfur grade being provided by Ordinary Kriging of panels. While univariate UC is adapted to the diffusive nature of the gold mineralisation (Ladolam orebody) at Lihir, the independent estimation of sulfur, through ordinary kriging, fails to capture the potential spatial correlation that exists between gold and sulfur mineralisation. This paper presents a practical implementation of bivariate UC, which better represents in the resource model the spatial correlation between gold and sulfur. Incremental economic gains through improved definition of material categories and scheduling are investigated, and the particular impact on the process of geological interpretation and domaining is emphasised.

Modern quarrying operations focus attention on blasting operations as a critical component in the overall cost-effectiveness of quarrying. Generally, optimisation of blasting has been linked to the processes of drilling, explosive consumption, secondary breakage, and product haulage to the primary crusher. This approach gives no consideration to the impact of primary crusher feed size distribution on downstream processes, or on the quality (ie shape and strength) of the final product. Blasting operations can be manipulated to produce a wide range of muckpile size distribution. This paper presents the results of studies into the impact of muckpile fragmentation on downstream crushing and screening operations, and includes measurements of primary blast oversize and muckpile fragmentation, together with measurements of size distribution, circulating loads and flakiness for various process streams throughout a quarry processing plant. This paper is an extension of other studies investigating the prediction and control of fragmentation from blasting, and the role of explosive performance in controlling muckpile fragmentation.

To obtain the best economic results in treating the comparatively high-grade ore of the Kalgurli Mine a good roast is essential, and the effort of this paper will be to briefly describe the plant and the conditions prevailing in roasting, which, on an output of about 360 tons daily, subsequently enable an average extraction of slightly over 94% of the gold to be maintained.The percentage of sulphur in the ore varies between 2'5 and 3'5, the lower figure existing when treating oxidized ore. The average gold value is 13 dwt; this occurs chiefly as sylvanite, containing .a lower percentage of silver than is usually present in that mineral. One ore body in the mine contains hessite (Ag2Te) in considerable quantity, associated with gold telluride, and when ore from this stope is being treated the silver contents rise to as high as 20 dwt, but the usual amount is about 9 dwt. per ton, of which only a small proportion is extracted. Other metallic minerals, in addition to pyrite, occurring more or less commonly, are arsenopyrite, magnetite, chalcopyrite, and the tellurides calaverite (AuTez)and coloradoite HgzTe3). A small proportion only of the value occurs as free gold.

THE power requirements of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company at Queenstown, Tasmania, have, since the inception of smelting operations in June, 1,,896, been derived continuously from the extensive forests in the watershed of the Queen River, adjacent to -the works, the firewood being of good quality, mainly composed of myrtle or beech (Fagus Ounninghami), eucalypts, and manuka (Leptospermum ericoides).The country is very rugged and mountainous, indented by numerous ravines and gullies, and intersected by many creeks, which are subject to periodical floods, under the influence of a heavy and persistent rainfall. The areas so far exploited aggregate a total of about 42 sq. 'miles, and this denuded country gives promise of ultimately becoming very valuable pastoral ground for cattle-raising. The tonnage of wood yielded per acre varies from 40 to 100 tons on stack measurement of 80 cub. ft. per ton, 60 tons per acre being considered a good average yield. The gross amount of firewood handled during the past 13 years approximates 1,200,000 tons, the greater portion of which has been obtained by ordinary tramming methods. Drum winders have now been built to attain depths of 3000 m and more in a single lift in accordance with the South African Code of Practice SABS 0294, which was introduced at the time of the last hoisting conference in 2000. Since then, this code has not only been followed for several winders in South Africa but was also followed in deep mines in Canada. Design of winders and their braking systems are described in the paper. Koepe winders are in use for high payloads of up to 50 t and to hoisting depths of around 2100 m. As known, the stress range of the hoisting ropes is the key parameter for rope fatigue. However, as per the SABS Code of Practice 0294, relying on static design is not the answer to the question of where the limits are for Koepe installation. The paper describes factors that are recognised to have influence in rope life and suggests definition of new design criteria for friction winders in order to get viable solutions for high-capacity hoisting from deep mines similar to drum hoisting.
