The article, as written, represents a short account of the treatment of the base bullion from the Broken Hill ores, as carried on at Port Pirie, for the recovery of lead, silver, and gold, and for the treatment of by-products. Appended is a short description of the chief facilities of plant which have been adopted to overcome the main difficulties in the refining of lead the Howard press and stirrer. The article is within the limit prescribed by the regulation for the prize offered by the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, comprising 30 pages, containing an average of about 200 words per page, exclusive of analyses, photographs, and sketches.The writer desires to thank those to whom he is indebted for their- kindness in affording him every facility possible to obtain the information which he required for the success of such a paper-viz., Messrs. Robertson, Leavens, and Gronow, of the Broken Hill Propritary Co. Limited, at Port Pirie, and Mr. Crowther, of the Adelaide School of Mines, to whom he is indebted for photographs. The difficulty of obtaining fair samples of gold drosses, and the inability to obtain particulars of fuel consumptions, prevents the paper from being as complete as one would wish. The limited length precludes detail, except in more important parts.

The Grootegeluk coal beneficiation plant is situated near Ellisras in the Waterberg coal= field in the Transvaal, RSA. At this plant 15 million tons of coal bearing material per annum are beneficiated by means of two-stage heavy medium bath and cyclone plants. Because of the very low yield of 12 % coking coal product, run= ping costs are of the - utmost importance. For this reason extensive tests were carried out to establish the most effective crushing and bene= ficiation methods and suitable aquipment. At the second heavy medium separation stage, the near-gravity material (+ 0,1. g/cc) amounts to 45 % and daily plant performance ana=lysis is required to ensure acceptable plant efficiency. Beneficiation processes for the -0,5 mm coal originally considered were froth flotation, shaking tables, heavy medium cyclones and water- only cyclones. When the froth flotation route was decided upon, further test work was done to enable selection of the equipment most suitable for the particular requirements.

DTL2 contract C916 was awarded in March 2009 for S$340 M. This contract includes two mass rapid transit (MRT) 1100?m long bored tunnels using two slurry tunnel boring machines (TBMs), with an internal diameter of 5.8?m, two cross passages and 135?m of cut-and-cover tunnels The contract also includes the design and construction of a new underground station including station entrances, subway links, architectural finishes and external landscaping. The station, located at Upper Bukit Timah Road near Jalan Jurong Kechil will also double as a civil defence shelter.The works included significant traffic management in a dense urban area in order to create the working areas whilst keeping the requisite number of traffic lanes. This involved numerous utility diversions and included the removal of a 33-year-old pedestrian overhead bridge (POB) over busy Bukit Timah Road. The station and tunnelling works were completed on time, including a ‘dock and dismantle’ TBM retrieval and subsequent breakthrough of the separating wall.This paper will detail the methods and solutions used to construct the tunnels and stations, with a focus on the requirements for construction of the station to be a civil defence shelter if required. This involved solutions to tying reinforcement and placing concrete to high standards in a restricted space, as well as the incorporation of heavy blast doors and other associated protective measures. The efforts of the management team resulted in the project being awarded first prize in the 2011 Land Transport Authority’s Annual Safety Award Convention and being named winner of the Safety and Health Award Recognition for Projects (SHARP) award at the 2011 Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Awards. As well, McConnell Dowell won a Green and Gracious Builder Award (Excellent Category) from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA).CITATION:McDonough, R, 2014. The sinking of the new No. 3 Shaft being mainly concerned with providing for the continuation of mining operations north of the existing workings, requirements for the shaft and haulage equipment were assessed, having in mind the anticipated needs of the Company in future years, the .available knowledge and probable future trends of the orebody, and also that the shaft would be required to act as a downcast airway for the ventilation system associated with the northern underground workings.

The title of this paper suggests rather a comprehensive survey of the industry, but since it is not possible to do justice to this in a short paper, and, as the bulk of the Australian trade consists of buttwelded tube, the author proposes to deal only with this type.The buttweld process has been praetised for many years and, as the methods of manufacture are not widely known, a brief history of its development may be of interest. Few good reference books in the English language are available, and this reticence may possibly have retarded advancement in manufacture.The earliest method of making ferrous tubes consisted of bending a thin plate or strip to form a "skelp." The "skelp" was then raised to a welding heat and hammerwelded on an internal mandrel on a smith's anvil. Necessity, however, soon produced mechanical methods of making tubes, and, in 1812, an Englishman named Osborn patented machinery for "welding and making barrels of fire-arms and other cylindrical articles." The apparatus was arranged as shown in Fig. 1.The skelp was raised to a welding heat and placed in the swage block "A." A mandrel was then inserted and the tube lapwelded by the action of the tilt hammer.Various modifications of this apparatus quickly followed, to keep pace with the rapidly growing demand and the exigencies of war. These tubes were essentially of short length and mainly used for gun barrels. The advent of coal gas for lighting (patented by Murdoch) created a demand for small tubes of longer length, and necessity, as usual, produced a solution. In 1824 Jas. Fine feed fractions in the size range from 1 to 40 ¦m of materials with different hardness as limestone and silicon carbide have been stressed in two different devices. A tungsten-carbide-blodc allows a single stressing with a pressure up to 2000 MPa and a 4-piston-block enables a multiple stressing procedure in which the material bed is stressed in alternating directions with a pressure up to 700 MPa. The experiments show energy absorption as the major factor for the interparticle breakage of hard material, like quartz, zircon silicate, silicon carbide and smelted oonindum, pressure, however, does not influence the results within the investigated range from 100 to 700 MPa and even up to 2000 MPa for corundum. But the breakage of the middle-hard limestone depends on the pressure so far as more fineness can be produced if the same energy is introduced at a lower pressure level. The creation of very fine and microfine fragments decreases strongly with increasing hardness of the feed materiaL The energy consumption for producing microfine material with a multiple stressing procedure on a particle bed is much lower than that one of a usual milling process. But this procedure needs a classification with a seperation cut at a couple of microns, which is not easy to accomplish.

In 1975 the Commonwealth Government established import parity pricing for all liquid hydrocarbons discovered after the 16th September, 1975. These discoveries were termed "new oil" to differentiate them from existing discoveries and production. Overnight the price of the product being sought trebled, resulting in greatly enhanced economics by increasing the potential returns on existing prospects and by making smaller plays economically viable. After 18 years of drilling, the offshore Gippsland Basin has attained a moderate level of exploration for a basin of its size. Fifty seven prospects have been drilled within the basin but only a few of these were drilled along the southern and northern margins, while the deep water areas along the eastern margin have remained virtually undrilled following the Hapuku-1 oil discovery. The major hydrocarbon accumulations within the basin are trapped beneath the Latrobe Unconformity surface and exploration has largely concentrated on this single play in areas immediately adjacent to the major producing fields.

Recent major urban trunk sewer infrastructure projects in Melbourne have involved construction of nearly 10 km of tunnel boring machine (TBM) driven tunnels in a range of geological conditions varying from soft alluvial soils to hard volcanic rock. To provide both construction and permanent access to the new trunk sewer network, a total of 17 shafts between 5 m and 13 m in diameter, and up to 64 m in depth have been constructed. This paper describes the design and construction of the temporary shaft support systems for the shafts.The range and variability of geological conditions at each shaft site required the adoption of the following shaft support systems across the projects – jet grouting, sheet piles, diaphragm wall, secant pile, contiguous pile, reinforced shotcrete rings and rock bolts.Groundwater control, settlement, TBM launch and reception chambers at the shaft base, chambers and TBM launches at mid-depth of shafts, connection shafts between new and existing sewers and bypass pumping shafts are among the challenges that have been met.This paper reports on the some of the challenges involved and experience gained in developing design and construction solutions for large diameter shafts that are excavated within varying geology in Melbourne over the past three years.

After review of the status of research on optirnisation of retreat longwall faces it is argued that an acceptable optimisation model must be based upon realistic cost data that take into account not only the face costs, but the total panel costs. These include the cost of development, face cost, removal and installation cost. The determined optimum length of a retreat longwall face is based upon a realistic model and actual costs.Parameters that influence the optimum face length have been varied over wide limits to allow determination of the sensitivity of the model and the effect of the parameters on the optimum face length. It is concluded that for medium production rates and medium system availability, the optimum face length of a retreat longwall face under Australian conditions lies between 180 and 220 metres.

The Australian Corporations Law generally requires Independent Expert Reports to be presented in support of capital raising or in defence of mergers and takeovers. The introduction of the VALMIN Code in 1995 (and its recent revision issued as the VALMIN Code, 1998) made Assessment and Valuation Reports in these circumstances much more comprehensible than before because of its key requirements for transparency and materiality. By forcing the Independent Valuer to provide an explanation of the reasoning behind the estimation of a particular resource asset, VALMIN allows the reader to clearly see any error or illogicality in the valuation methodology used and to seriously question or even reject the resulting value. Even though many elements of resource asset valuation practice are undeniably subjective, there must be some basis of objective rationality to it. Independent resource asset Valuers are the essential link between mineral explorers/miners on the one hand and brokers/analysts/fund managers/investors on the other. The minerals and financial industries both expect them to not use inappropriate or invalid valuation methods and illogical steps within these methods. This paper examines some of the less sensible ways in which some of the main techniques that Valuers commonly use to assess the fair market value of mineral properties have been applied in recent instances. The authors hope to discourage the adoption or perpetration of the æWhat-number-did-you-have-in-mind?' approach. It is MINVALÆs view that as many methods as possible should be used in any resource asset valuation. If any of the resulting estimates are in approximate agreement (particularly if they were derived using the less subjective of the available methods), ie if they cluster, they are probably more persuasive as being the Preferred Value of the asset than outlier values within the Valuation Range.

Computational models are very useful for studying many of the physical mechanisms which can cause sample bias. Within such models we can predict the trajectories of all individual particles and thereby make observations which are not possible for physical systems. Physical mechanisms highlighted include congestion at the cutter aperture, particles bouncing over the cutter aperture, air drag on fine particles, waves of material being bulldozed off the belt by the upstream side of the body of square cutters, and particles being thrown by the leading edges of cross-belt cutter blades. Having identified relevant physical mechanisms for an existing cutter, we can estimate the extent to which they are likely to result in unequal representation of portions of a stream of material and thereby estimate the maximum likely sample bias.

The nation of Fiji is located the South Pacific on the æRim of FireÆ some four hours flying time from the eastern sea board of Australia. It is a tourist destination situated on the main route from Australia to the Americas. Fiji is a developing country that has had a fewsetbacks but the country has able, happy people that are very resilient. Most importantly, the country is a safe destination for tourists and businesspeople as the local people are friendly, have good ethics, and most speak English. Fiji is a very willing nation, hungry for knowledge and advancement. The Fiji geological setting on the æRim of FireÆ, that runs from New Zealand across the Pacific through Fiji and on to Papua NewGuinea, has many large deposits of gold and copper. Fiji is an exciting destination for mineral explorers with discoveries of gold, silver, manganese, bauxite, iron and copper. Gold was first discovered in 1921 and the first two mines opened in 1935; one of which was Emperor Gold Mining Company (EGM) the other being Mt Kasi. EGM mines gold on the margin of the Tavua caldera, some 85 km north of the Nadi international airport. EGM has operated continuously for close to 70 years, producing approximately 6.9 million ounces of gold and has an underground reserve of 847 600 ounces with a total mineral resource of 12 335 600 tonnes at 10 g/t (as given in the Emperor Mines Limited Annual report 2003). The mineralisation in Fiji is very exciting and it is common to discover spectacular intersections and outcrops, which are typical for this type of epithermal narrow vein mineralisation, but be aware that the orebodies are variable and not easy to understand.

QNI Pty Ltd operates the Yabulu Refinery located 25 kilometres north of Townsville, North Queensland. The plant treats nickel laterite ores sourced from the Philippines, Indonesia and New Caledonia. The cobalt head grade and overall recovery expectations for the 2001/2002 financial year are 0.161 per cent and 53.8 per cent respectively. Cobalt is a valuable byproduct derived from the nickel refining operation which utilises the Caron Process. Any increases in cobalt recovery that are achieved from the existing relatively low level provide significant improvements to the bottom line of the operation. Towards the end of 2000, a project was undertaken to characterise cobalt losses with the sole purpose of improving cobalt recoveries using a variety of analysis techniques. The Time-of- Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS û University of South Australia) method was used to verify the presence of surface bearing cobalt species, originating from either co-precipitation or adsorption mechanisms. Cross-section examinations were also performed using Scanning Electron Micrscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDXS). These techniques indicated the presence of high cobalt concentrations (in the order of several per cent) within a select number of roasted and leached ore particles. The phenomenon of cobalt losses due to incomplete leaching within specific ore particles was not widely documented within the Refinery prior to these studies. In order to quantify losses via this mechanism, Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA û JKTech Centre) was also performed on key samples. This paper serves to document a systematic approach in determining the source of significant valuable mineral losses in an established, operating plant. It discusses the use of a variety of analytical techniques, which have been adapted for the minerals processing industry, but are strongly relevant for plant investigations in the hydrometallurgical industry.

The granulites and related "dry" igneous rocks tend to be passed over during exploration for metals. Preliminary data show that high trace concentrations of Cu, Ni and other metals of economic interest are common in orthopyroxene and some of the other granulite minerals. During retrograde metamorphism of granulites, pyroxenes are converted to amphiboles or phyllosilicates, and significant quantities of metals are released and become available for incorporat- ion into new mineral phases, or may be transported elsewhere. S--rich scapolite is the normal scapolite of granulites. Its retrogression to secondary plagioclase provides much S which scavenges Cu, Ni, etc., from pyroxenes undergoing retrogression, thus producing ore-fluids. A full analysis of a scapolite with 5.10 per cent S03 is given. Beryl is unstable in granulites but the rare Be mineral taaffeite (Al4Pf (Be,Fe)O3) with 5,50 per cent BeO occurs in central Australia as a pale green Tabular mineral easily confused for chloritoid in hand-specimen. Metamorphic differentiation and mobilization of primary ore concentrations are major factors controlling their post-granulite attitude and grade.

Mobile robots have been making impressive inroads in a variety of domains. Within the Mining-RoX project, Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg is exploring a further frontier for mobile and autonomous robots: underground mines. The potential benefits of mobile robots in underground mining are plentiful as underground mines are strenuous and potentially dangerous working environments for humans. A higher degree of automation, with robots either acting as helpers for human miners or even replacing all human personnel deployed underground, could help to significantly reduce mining costs. In disaster cases, rescue robots could help to find missing personnel. Unmanned mines operated by robots alone would not endanger human lives at all. Further use cases, and a particular focus of the Mining-RoX project, are mobile robots that gather sensory information of the underground mine (eg for the purpose of creating detailed 2D and 3D maps) as well as monitoring environmental conditions such as air and water quality. This paper presents the design of a prototypical mobile robot for mapping and monitoring underground mines. A generic robotic platform was extended with various 2D and 3D imaging devices as well as other sensors. First results from test runs in an underground mine are reported. A conventional Bucket Wheel Excavator (BWE) system with conveyor transport, mobile tripper and spreader was commissioned at the Goonyella Mine in 1982. The system was introduced to prestrip ahead of dragline excavations and was specified to remove 7.5 million cubic metres per annum in ground somewhat harder than that inwhich bucket wheel excavators are normally operated.This machine has, since 1982, moved more than 77 millionbank cubic metres of material and has been relocated twice. Extensive trials have been undertaken including digging blasted rock.

The steeply dipping Mammoth orebody is mined by Gunpowder Copper Limited using a sub- level uphole bench stoping method at a mining rate of 350 000 tonnes per year. of three per cent copper ore. Access to the mine, is provided by 1 in 9 decline which spirals in the footwall connect-, ing all the sublevels, thus maximising mobility and accessibility of trackless mining equipment Sublevels are driven in ore off cross- cuts from the decline every 15 metres vertic- ally. Sublevel drives are stripped out to widths up to 18 metres before cutoff slots are mined at each end. A two boom fan drilling jumbo is used to drill inclined rows of holes to the floor of the sublevel above. Two or three rows are fired at a time which allows broken ore and remnants from the level above to be mucked out by rubber tyred LHD equipment to the brow. Ore widths of up to 80 metres are en- countered at lower levels where ring drilling from longitudinal drill drives will break ore to a draw point system below. Development is carried out with three boom rubber tyred jumbos. All haulage from the mine is in 20 and 35 tonne rear dump trucks. All aspects of the mining operation are discussed including ventilation, pumping and drainage, services and future planning.
