I am wearing two hats today. When the invitations went out to participate in this forum, two were received in the head office of the Department of Lands and Survey - one addressed to the Director-General of Lands and one to the Chairman of the National Parks Authority. It seemed logical that as the department is responsible to the Government for the administration of the National Parks Act 1952, we should respond by providing one speaker to cover both the department's interests and those of the National Parks Authority. I hope, however, that this will not blur the clear distinction which exists in the context of the mineral industry between Crown land on the one hand administered by the department for the statutory Land Settlement Board and national parks and allied reserves on the other hand which are the responsibility of the National Parks Authority.

The Mt Lyell copper mine in western Tasmania has discharged acid drainage (AD) into the Queen and King Rivers and Macquarie Harbour for over a century. Presently, dissolved copper loads of about 1000 tonnes per annum and dissolved aluminium loads of >2000 tonnes per annum are contained in the AD, which is derived from underground workings (~60 per cent) and historic waste rock dumps (~40 per cent). Flows vary from about 100 L/s during dry periods, to >400 L/s during the wet winter. The site is presently operated by Copper Mines of Tasmania (CMT) who are not responsible for the acid drainage generated from the mine site. Although western Tasmania is famous for its mining history, tourism and aquaculture have emerged as the new industries on the West Coast, with a major tourism railway (the Abt) recently opened along the banks of the Queen and King Rivers. The emergence of these industries in a æclean greenÆ Tasmania has resulted in a strong community and government push to remediate the acid drainage. Remediation investigations and efforts at Mt Lyell were initiated by the Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment (DPIWE), previously known as DELM, in 1995, and have included the quantification of environmental impacts arising from the AD, and the investigation and costing of potential remediation options. A primary focus of the work has been to identify cost-neutral options which recover metals from the AD in a saleable form to help defray on going treatment costs. This paper summarises these activities in generally a chronological order, highlighting findings of the program that are potentially applicable to other acid drainage sites.

Land disturbed by alluvial gold mining should be restored to a capability or productivity as good as that which existed prior to disturbance.   Effective rehabilitation requires detailed planning prior to mining and must also be closely integrated with the mining operations.   The main constituents of a rehabilitation plan: description of existing site conditions, choice of final land use, establishment of final landform, water management and erosion control, soil reconstruction, revegetation and management of rehabilitated land are briefly described.

Models of the size specific processes of particle collision, attachment and detachment have been combined in a form suitable for analysis of a full-scale flotation plant. The model is based on a first principal approach to particle collection by bubbles. Parameters considered include particle size, bubble size, particle contact angle, energy dissipation, entrainment and froth recovery. Using data structures configured within an Excel spreadsheet using æLimn: The Flowsheet ProcessorÆ, the model has been incorporated into a description of the individual cells within a simple roughing and cleaning flotation circuit. Simulated feeds of varying particle size distribution, feed tonnage and varying mineral hydrophobicity representing different mineral phases are presented to the model to produce predicted final concentrate grades and recoveries. Practical techniques for measuring many of the parameters included in the model are now becoming readily available. However, relating the terms included for contact angle, energy dissipation, entrainment (ie water recovery) and froth recovery to measurable parameters in operating plants remain as continuing challenges for research.

This paper discusses the operating model within Endeavour Mining Corporation regarding the options of owner mining against contract mining. It’s based on the concept of ‘are we carrying out the most efficient mining’ regarding cost and performance. This question can only be answered through an extensive contract mining tender process and conducting a comprehensive comparison to evaluate the transition viability. Karma mine, located in Burkina Faso, is the subject of this paper. The Tender model included sales of equipment, parts and tooling associated with the traditional Load and Haul Schedule of Rates (SOR). The methodology focused on the structure of the tender process, which consists in the development of a SOR based on haulage profiles and mining schedule. This is a new Endeavour framework that allowed the bidders to compete on an even level. This was performed using a systemic analysis which encompassed all the elements involved in a transition such as the Human Resources (HR), taxes and customs implications, directs and non-direct costs (Finance and interest on assets, depreciation, insurance), contractor risk profiling. It was assessed against the normalised internal pricing tender-based. This paper gives an insight into how a West African mining operation addressed the sensitivities of the HR functions against the commercial aspects. This was one of the most successful transitions in West Africa and was carried out during the COVID crisis. The outcome of this project has created value by detailing a lesson learned model for both commercial and HR aspects. This discusses the commercial comparisons along with the internal model with the underlying HR functions as a risk factor that could have jeopardised the continuation of the operation. This resulted in a smooth transition with the additional cash flow generated by the sale of the parts and equipment turned Karma into a viable operation.

"Regardless of orebody value, at some stage, the pit will reach a depth where the reward for mining wider and/or deeper is not justified by the anticipated returns. ‘Last-blast’ strategies may help to some degree in recovering additional quantities of the resource but when a pit remains, there is often significant value left in the ground. In addition, in many cases, one or many good reasons may dictate why going underground and pursuing the orebody below the pit is also not justifiable. Whereas the company can hopefully move on to other more prospective parts of the orebody, the remaining options for the pit are usually very limited. Typically the pit is either held for potentially more favourable future pit expansion opportunities or it could be used for an alternative purpose, such as tailings or waste storage. This paper will present an alternative option that involves the direct extraction of values using in situ recovery (ISR) methods to recover additional value metals from the walls and/or floor of the pit. ISR involves circulating a fluid through the remaining orebody, solubilising the target metal and subsequently returning the solution to the surface for metal recovery. ISR is not the panacea to all but it has been employed selectively in the minerals industry for some time and the production of metals, such as uranium, rely heavily on this approach. ISR is not yet considered by many operators as an approach to compete with open pit or underground mining, largely because of the perceived limitations of this approach and the perceptions of risk. Rapid recent development of tools and enabling technologies relevant to ISR have made us reconsider the most economic approach to extracting many other metals from known mineral systems, even those currently listed as subeconomic. We suggest that ISR has the potential to make mine operators rethink the end of the pit life and adopt an innovative ISR approach to work toward a more complete recovery of value metals from existing pits.Citation:Kuhar, L L and Robinson, D J, 2016. The role of government and the community has changed significantly over the last two decades in relation to environment protection, particularly in the mining sector. Increased community expectations have moved well ahead of regulatory requirements, and there is now a much greater appreciation generally of the concepts of ecologically sustainable development and intergenerational equity, and the gap between current practice and practices which would be in harmony with these concepts. Besides providing a `safety net' through regulations to ensure that basic environmental performance standards are met, government is now working proactively with the mining industry to encourage higher levels of environmental performance. This paper describes some initiatives between the Commonwealth government and the industry designed to achieve these higher levels of environmental performance, through programs aimed at the paradigms of best practice environmental management and continual improvement.

The concept of Big Data refers to data sets that are so large, variable and/or complex that traditional data processing applications struggle to integrate the data for effective investigation, analysis and value generation. With advances in sensor technology and smarter equipment, the mining industry is experiencing Big Data, and in a different way to how the intelligence and marketing communities experience Big Data. Future mining will bring larger, more complicated and diverse data sets increasing the strain on traditional data integration and investigation techniques. Block caving is an important mining method for the extraction of massive, low-grade ore deposits due to its low operating cost and high production potential, given the right orebody geometry and ground conditions. This paper focuses on block caving due to its increasing popularity and importance in the future economic extraction of multiple commodities. The block cave mining system (BCMS) is a complex interrelation of factors, and due to the reliance on natural processes within the system, it is one of the least understood mining methods. Obtaining information on the factors within the BCMS generates large, complex data sets on various time scales. Each sensor network within the BCMS combines spatial and temporal information with tens to hundreds of recorded parameters. Data sets are quickly moving from multidimensional to n-dimensional. Optimisation of the BCMS is only possible through a holistic analysis approach, thus involving the integration of multiple, diverse, n-dimensional data sets (Big Data). This paper presents a current example BCMS Big Data situation involving 12 sources of information with differences in volume, data format and frequency of data generation. This suitability of virtual reality scientific visualisation (VRSV) as a solution to BCMS Big Data interpretation difficulties is then discussed. These 12 data sets can be effectively integrated using VRSV for intuitive and accelerated investigation of the BCMS. Potential future Big Data within the BCMS is presented involving 20 sources of information resulting from our increased need for monitoring and advancements in technology. Current methods of defining queries may not be suitable within these future complex, multidimensional data sets, and the potential of artificial intelligence algorithms within this system is discussed. These advancements in technology and machine learning lead to the requirement of live data acquisition and analysis. Mineral resource and ore reserve estimates are founded on two sources of data: tonnage and grade. The tonnage is a product of volume and density; both of which are estimates. Density impacts numerous operational factors, which include, but are not limited to, mine design, mine planning, equipment selection and operational performance. Hence, density is a significant parameter and its determination requires similar care as the measurement of grade. Selecting an appropriate method to determine density, and ensuring its rigorous application, thus reduces risk and can improve operational performance, which in turn increases profit margin.Different Anglo American sites use a variety of practices and protocols to determine density, which is highly dependent on the physical characteristics of the orebody, local conditions and historical practices. Also, individual sites sometimes execute the same method in a slightly different way, which may also affect the outcome of the measurements. In order to gain a better understanding of how density is determined at Anglo American projects and operations, a review of these techniques was undertaken. The objective of the study was to identify and share good practices across the company, as well as to look for improvement opportunities, where applicable. Ten different methods of measuring density, applied to nine different commodities, were identified and described. An additional technique was recently developed by Anglo American Technical Solutions. The core pycnometer is a large gas displacement pycnometer capable of measuring density at high accuracy on full pieces of intact core.This paper provides an overview of methods used to determine density within the Anglo American Group, including quality control and quality assurance aspects. It is not the purpose of this paper to identify a preferred method, but to highlight the importance of choosing the best suited practice for a project or mine site. In addition, a case study comparing two different density determination methods applied to the same rock samples from the Los Bronces Copper mine was undertaken and the results of that study are presented here.Selecting the most appropriate method to determine density and comparing results from two or more techniques against each other, together with other suitable quality control procedures, is considered to be of utmost importance for all mining operations and exploration projects.CITATION:Makhuvha, M, Arellano, R M and Harney, D M W, 2014. Barrick has successfully developed the thiosulfate leaching process to treat sulfidic high preg-robbing ores. The process was developed through rigorous bench test programs and proved in pilot campaigns and demo plant operations. The process uses calcium thiosulfate as a leaching reagent, resin for gold recovery with sulfite/trithionate elution and reverse osmosis as a mean of reagent recovery. Although small scale mining is regarded by many as of historical value only, this kind of mining activity is still much more widespread than is usually assumed. It has been estimated that it produces as much as ten per cent of the global mineral output. More significantly this figure is often much higher for many of the developing countries of Africa, Asia and South America, signifying the relatively greater contribution of small scale mining to the economies of those countries. It is also noted that small scale mining has always been a feature of mineral production in New Zealand and Australia. An attempt is made to define small scale mining, and the factors determining the suitability of small scale mining operations are discussed. The state of the art in small scale mining is reviewed and the author endeavours to rationalise the important parameters which contribute to successful small scale mining operations and discusses how these parameters may be optimised. The benefits of small scale mining to the mining industry as a whole and to the community at large are outlined. The paper concludes by emphasising the necessity to maintain small scale mining and 'explores' its future 'prospects'.

It is globally recognised that existing and emerging mining activities should be conducted in a æsustainableÆ manner for the entire life of mine. Many companies annually publish corporate sustainability reports to demonstrate their actions in accordance with international expectations. This concept of sustainable mining practices also applies to mine water management, with influences often extending beyond site operations, affecting surrounding catchments and community users. This paper explores differences in conceptual and operational terms of æsustainableÆ mine water management within the Philippines. Outcomes of a review of corporate sustainability reports, governance documentation, research programs, and stakeholder knowledge acquired through action-research workshops are presented. The paper aims to inform and support future capacity building exercises delivered by the International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC), with outcomes tailored to government officials and policy makers of developing countries. Truck fires in a tunnel can create heat release rates (HRR) significantly higher than 100 MW. Because of a fast spread of smoke and heat the self-rescuing period is shortened significantly. Furthermore, it was experienced that firefighters are not able to approach the fire because of enormous heat and radiation. As consequence, the fire may spread to adjacent vehicles, which is reported for distances of more than 50 m. Tunnels can be damaged severely by fires and the repair works causes long closing time of tunnels. In addition to direct costs for the refurbishment of the tunnel, further economic losses will occur due to the closure time. Conventional deluge systems in Japanese and Australian road tunnels have been known since the 1960s. During the last years the research work was concentrated in the development of more effective and cost-effective solutions based on water mist technology. Orientating fire tests as well as specifications of minimum requirements were carried out within the European research project UPTUN. This basic work was extended by the safety of life in tunnels (SOLIT) research project, funded by the German government. The scope of SOLIT was not only to study the effects of water mist fire suppression systems in tunnels, but also the interactions with other safety systems, such as fire detection, passive fire protection or ventilation. Furthermore, the integration of active fire suppression systems into a holistic tunnel safety system was part of the work program. Within this research project a large-scale fire test program with more than 50 fire tests, including 25 truck fires with a potential HRR of almost 200 MW, was carried out in the test tunnel of San Pedro des Anes (Spain). Furthermore, a two-week testing and training period with the Madrid Fire Brigade was carried out after the SOLIT program. Two fundamental results were achieved during the fire tests:Primarily, water mist systems are able to control the HRR of fires in tunnels, so the atmosphere will be improved significantly. Hazardous effects of toxic smoke on people will be reduced and due to the reduction of temperatures and radiation, a firefighterÆs approach is improved significantly. Furthermore, the fire spread will be hampered and the thermal load on the building structure also be reduced. Secondarily, due to positive interactions with the ventilation system, the effectiveness of a tunnel ventilation system, longitudinal as well as semi-transversal, is increased significantly. Based on the results of the SOLIT research project, a water mist system was applied into several parts of the M30 tunnels in Madrid. As a basic principle the technical equipment and the methodology of implementation comply with the UPTUN 251 guidance, recommending minimum standards for water-based fire suppression systems in tunnels.

On the occasion of the 14th Mill Operators’ Conference and marking 40 years since the first one was held in Mount Isa in 1978, it is fitting to review the history of the Conference and its development over that time.The first 10 Conferences were irregularly held at three to four year intervals, with 9 of these in regional centres of Australasia. It is only since 2012 that the Mill Operators’ Conference has become a regular biennial event, alternating with the MetPlant Conference.The number of people attending the Conference has more than doubled to 470 delegates at the 13th one in 2016. It has outgrown its regional beginnings.Papers presented to the previous Conferences have been analysed according to commodity, country of origin, technology and theme plus the affiliation of the authors to discern any trends that may assist in planning the future events.Suggestions are made as to how the AusIMM might wish to arrange its mineral processing/metallurgical conferences.Recent changes to the structure of the Conference providing a more meaningful experience for the delegates and increasing their interaction and involvement should be vigorously pursued.CITATION:Munro, P D, 2018. Amorphous silica deposits have been identified at Tikitere and Taheke near Rotorua. Two areas at Tikitere have been surface sampled and drilled to establish a resource of amorphous silica in excess of one million tonnes. A pilot plant was established to develop a process to manufacture a high quality super pozzolanic material. This development process took two years before a commercial product was introduced to the construction industry in 1996. The amorphous silica product, marketed as Microsilica 600, is used as a pozzolanic material to produce high quality strong and durable concrete, sprayed tunnel linings, mortars and grouts. Microsilica 600 has been used locally and exported to 11 countries.

Today, it can be said that the majority of mines utilise communications equipment in one form or another. Either for communications between staff making their day-to-day operations more efficient, or for emergency communications, as well as linking computer based mine management systems, and providing remote control over complex mobile and fixed machinery. With the advances in technology now available, we are moving into the next generation of mine communications equipment, using digital communications in the underground mine environment. It is a proven fact that an efficient underground mine communications system can help maximise production, by providing major gains in areas such as equipment and manpower utilisation, staff and vehicle tracking, reaction times to break downs and emergencies. In this paper we will describe some of the facilities that are currently available, as well as what will soon be available to mining and tunnelling companies around the world.

At Sams Creek a gold-bearing, peralkaline granite pophyry dyke intrudes Ordovician-Silurian metapelite and quartzite. The granite porphyry dyke has a thickness of up to 40 m, extends discontinuously for about 8 km, and intrudes thin lamprophyre dykes along its contacts. The granite dyke and gold-bearing sulphide and quartz-siderite veins within it have been deformed and recrystallised during several phases of folding, the youngest of which is Early Cretaceous.   The unaltered granite porphyry is composed of phenocrysts of perthite, arfvedsonite, aegerine and quartz in a groundmass of the same minerals, with accessory ilmenite, rutile and fluorite. K-Ar dates of amphibole from the granite gave ages of 226 and 246 Ma, but these ages may be a minimum due to resetting during the thermal and deformation events that have affected the area. Unpublished Ar-Ar data on amphibole from the granite show disturbed spectra with high temperature steps around 300-315 Ma, which is consistent with the age of A-type granites in the Buller region. Further age dating of primary and hydrothermal minerals in the granite is continuing. At least three stages of hydrothermal alteration have been identified in the granite. Stage I alteration is characterised by high fO2 magnetite-siderite ¦ biotite, which is cut by thin quartz-pyrite veinlets (Stage II). These are cut by Stage III sulphide, quartz and siderite veins, and pervasive silicification represented by quartz-perthite-albite-rutile ¦ pyrite-siderite-sericite assemblages overprints the earlier alteration stages. Lamprophyre is altered to a siderite-chlorite-sericite assemblage. Stage III sulphide veins are composed of arsenopyrite + pyrite ¦ gold ¦ galena ¦ sphalerite ¦ chalcopyrite ¦ pyrrhotite ¦ graphite, deposited by low fO2 H2S fluids. The gold contains 18-30 wt% Ag and up to 1 wt% Bi. Temperature of vein formation was estimated from vein quartz fluid inclusion homogenisation temperatures (Th 260-355oC, average 330oC), arsenopyrite-sphalerite thermometry (310-365oC) and quartz-albite stable isotope thermometry (340oC). The altered granite and the veins have been deformed, and recrystallised and competent sulphide minerals are fractured and brecciated. Alteration and mineralisation are confined to the granite porphyry and adjacent lamprophyre.

"The demand for fine and ultra-fine grinding associated with the processing of more challenging, finer grained orebodies and the global driver of minimising energy consumption has been an increased focus in our industry. Outotec’s stirred milling technology, the high intensity grinding mill (HIGmill™), was launched in 2012 in response to this industry need. First Quantum Minerals Ltd selected HIGmill™ technology for its Kevitsa mine in Northern Finland. The 700 kW mill is grinding copper rougher concentrate to improve copper/nickel separation and copper recovery. Selection of the HIGmill™ followed mineralogy analysis and laboratory and pilot testing for HIG milling in parallel with flotation tests to determine optimum grind size and energy input.The paper discusses the challenges and successes of the test work, manufacture, installation, commissioning and subsequent operation of the mill. Grinding performance is presented and a comparison between predicted and operating energy efficiency is made.
