In a high risk venture such as mining where capital is committed and contracts are signed on a minimum of information, decisions are based primarily on production forecasts derived through consideration of such factors as management-labor relations, mining practice, variations in physical conditions, and the equipment applied. Among these factors, the physical conditions offer the least opportunity for control, and, due to the wide range of mining conditions experienced, little effort has been made to develop objective methods for measuring their effects on mine output. This paper's aim is to demonstrate a method for assessing these relationships that can be applied under a wide range of conditions both in new mines and in working sections where there is a need to determine the impact of proposed operational modifications. Using empirical data from active underground mines, a mathematical model was developed to derive a set of regression equations for predicting production as a function of mining conditions.

This paper outlines in a step-by-step approach all of the major tasks to be undertaken for the design of a complex multi-seam open pit coal mine. Examples are drawn from three such projects in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales, Australia, where computer techniques for equipment production rate estimation, mining block layout, and mine scheduling were used extensively. The paper is divided into two sections - Conceptual Planning and Detailed Planning; and the various tasks associated with these sections are discussed in detail, with examples of typical problems to be overcome.

Nickeliferous laterite ore from Sukinda, Orissa (India), consists of very fine particles agglomerated into larger aggregates. The ore is chemically and mineralogically complex and presents many characterization and beneficiation problems. In this study the results of a detailed investigation to characterize the ore by several techniques are discussed. Various techniques used for characterisation include elemental analysis, electron microscopy, electronspectroscopy for chemical analysis, x-ray and electron diffraction, differential thermal and thermogravimetric analyses, EDAX analysis, Mössbauer and infrared spectroscopy. Generally one method compliments the other and it is shown that a combination of several techniques is necessary to fully characterize the ore. The scope and limitations of the techniques are also discussed.

Laboratory and pilot plant studies showed that supergrade iron ore concentrates (containing less than 2% SiO2) can be made from standard grade magnetic iron ore products by cationic silica flotation. Continuous tests were run using various flowsheet arrangements. whereby (1) super and standard grade products were made simultaneously or (2) only a superconcentrate was produced. After a caustic scrub and desliming pretreatment, the silica in a magnetic taconite concentrate was reduced to 1.8% SiO2 by amine flotation. Approximately 75% of the iron was recovered in the single flotation stage, and by additional beneficiation 95% of the total iron was ultimately recovered,

Calculating machines permit the use of the more rapid cotangent and semigraphic solutions of plane triangulation. The results of these methods are as accurate as those of other methods. Simple adjustment of the net, and ease of calculation encourage more complete field work. Errors in field work or in computation are easily localized.

HOISTS for metal mines are seldom designed for H one particular depth. They are intended for an ultimate load and depth with a given speed but are first used to hoist from a shallower depth, gradually working to the ultimate as development progresses. Sometimes the mine is not worked on the upper levels because of the kind and grade of ore, the mining of which depends on market conditions. In this case the hoist may be used in the same working shift to lift ore, for example, from the 1200 and the 4400-ft level. This means that the safety factor of the rope should be considered not only when it hoists from the greatest depth, but also when it hoists from the upper levels. According to present safety factor standards, a hoisting rope can have ample safety margin when hoisting from the lower or lowest level and still be shy of sufficient safety margin when hoisting from the upper levels. This will be shown by curves presented in this paper.

Whole-rock analyses of limestones, fine-gralned dolostones and coarser-grained dolostones adjacent to mineralized breccias (Coy mine, Mascot-Jefferson City district) were compared with similar lithologies adjacent to apparently non-mineralized breccias at the new Thorn Hill section located approximately 39 km north of the Coy mine. Specimens were analyzed for Ca, Mg, Si, Al, K, Fe, Mn, Sr, Br, C1, S, Ti and P using X-ray fluorescence analysis. The concentrations of the major and most minor elements for Thorn Hill specimens fall within the range of concentrations for Coy mine specimens; however, significant differences (probability < 0.05) were noted for Fe, C1 and Br for fine-grained dolostones and for MgO, Fe and Mn for the coarser-grained dolostones. No significant differences were detected for the limestones.

The selection and sizing of filters depends on the characteristics of the type of filter and the feed slurry. In addition, the rate functions of cake formation, cake washing and cake dewatering must be determined in order to design the filter station on the basis of desired performance. This chapter discusses the applied theory used to determine the rate functions and illustrates how to incorporate these into the filter cycle to obtain the required objectives. This also permits the sizing of the filter and auxiliaries as well as the selection of the proper type of filter.

Carstarphen, tramway engineer of the American Steel and Wire Co., was the guest of the evening. After dinner, Mr. Carstarphen gave a most interesting illustrated talk on the subject of aerial tramways. The views-showed the various forms of aerial tramways and three&apos; unique installations, one carrying 285 tons of coal an hour, undoubtedly the maximum quantity transported by any tramway up to this time. The process of solvent extraction.(or liquid-liquid extraction) is a separation technique involving mass transfer across a phase boundary, and as such is not limited to metal transfer from an aqueous to a non-aqueous phase, or, vice versa. We shall here, however, restrict ourselves to the application of the solvent extraction technique to metallurgical processing. Basically, the process of solvent extraction as applied to metals separation and purification requires only that a specific metal be transferred from, initially, an aqueous phase to a non-aqueous phase, followed by a reversal of this transfer. The Denison orebody, located on the north limb of a syncline, rests at depths of 800 ft in the northern end of the property to 3000 ft at the southern end, and has a composite dip of 19º, varying locally from 0º to 45º. It is composed essentially of two pyritized conglomerate beds separated by a varying thickness of quartzite. The thickness of the upper conglomerate reef of the main ore zone varies from 2 to 15 ft while the lower reef is from 2 to 12 ft. Mining, whether carried out over the entire section of the reefs and quartzite or by selective mining of the reefs, is accomplished by room and pillar methods, with an initial 67% extraction on the advance towards the property boundaries. The underground ore handling requirement in such an orebody has become one of the most challenging problems in mining.

As the main source of indigineous energy, coal has a big role to play in the development of national economy of India. Nationalization of the coal mining has brought the entire industry under the unit control of the Central Government following which an ambitious plan for increasing the coal production in the next few five year plans has been undertaken. In order to achieve best all round results, economy-mathematical models of Planning the total system, right from the highest to lowest hierarchial levels of decision making, have been proposed through a Global Model which is detailed in Local Models in stages right up to a mine. Optimum obtained by computer solution of the models would provide basis for objective decision making in the fields of selection of optimum plan for developing the industry, the coal fields and the mines with construction and/or reconstruction of mines, capacity optimization of enterprises and mines therein. Different types of Models and the optimization processes are presented.
