The Kosaka smelter is situated in the extreme northern end of Hondo (the main island of Japan) 15 mi. east of Odate, on the government railroad, to which it is connected by a private railway. It contains ten blast furnaces having a maximum daily capacity of 1600 short tons of ore, conducting a slow pyritic smelting entirely without coke or limestone, and with a charge carrying over 50 per cent. of briquetted and agglomerated fines. The matte (35 per cent. Cu) is blown in two basic-lined barrel converters, the blister copper (98.8 per cent. Cu) being cast at once into anodes. The adjoining refinery contains 600 tanks with a maximum capacity of 1300 tons of cathodes per month, the byproducts being gold, silver, and bismuth. At present, working at about half capacity, the whole plant consumes 2000 kw. of hydro-electric power, and employs 850 men and women. The ores are derived from two principal sources: The relatively new Hanaoka mine, 20 mi. from the smelter, yielding copper pyrites by underground mining, and the old Kosaka open-cut mine, 1 1/2 mi. from the smelter, yielding three different ores: (a) kuromono, a compact finegrained mixture of barite (32 per cent.), zinc blende, galena, and pyrite, the whole carrying about 2.5 per cent. Cu; (6) cupriferous pyrites with 2.4 per cent. Cu; (c) siliceous ore with 2 per cent. Cu. The Hanaoka ore now constitutes approximately one-half of the charge, almost replacing the Kosaka kuromono which was the ore chiefly smelted until 1913.'

In a portion of the development work being conducted, attention has been given to the development of high-strength zirconium alloys. One of the most outstanding alloys developed in the course of this work is Zr-4 wt pct Sn-1.6 wt pct Mo.' Fabrication and Test Methods Over 50 ingots of zirconium containing either tin and molybdenum or both have been evaluated in the process of selection of an optimum composition. THE study of the flow of oil and gas mixtures through oil-bearing formations has received special attention from the petroleum industry within the past few years, and has resulted in a series of research projects based upon various phases of the flow of heterogeneous fluids through porous media. Obviously, the low cost of producing oil during the flowing life of a well makes it desirable to obtain production by natural flow as long as possible and to effect a maximum recovery of oil and gas by the utilization of reservoir energy through efficient methods based upon a thorough knowledge of reservoir characteristics. Despite the extensive research that has been carried out, there is little information available on the behavior of oil and gas mixtures flowing through reservoir formations. This makes it impossible to predetermine the optimum operating condi-tions for flowing wells. A differential pressure must exist in the reservoir in order to induce flow toward the well. It is a well established fact that with homogeneous fluids the relation of pressure drop to linear distance traveled is a straight-line function as long as the flow is viscous. However, in regard to gas-saturated oils, a number of investigators1,3,4 have reported that the flow characteristics are materially altered as some of the lighter hydrocarbons are liberated from the oil to form gas while the fluid passes through the reservoir. Most of the work done has been concerned primarily with steady-state flow of liquid-gas mixtures. Cloud1 has studied the effects of saturating crude petroleum oils with various gases, together with the resultant pressure gradients under steady flow conditions, noting that unsaturated oils flowed faster and yet maintained lower pressure gradients than saturated oils.

An electrical model study has been mode to estimate the effect of horizontal fractures in thick reservoirs on pattern conductivity. For the patterns studied, it is shown that fracturing all the wells in the pattern in-creases the conductivity considerably more than frac-turing only single wells. For certain conditions one large fracture is more effective in increasing conductivity than several fractures of half the radius. Particularly in thick reservoirs and with large fractures, the center of the pay is found to be more responsive than other locations. For the seven-spot pattern fracturing the center well is more effective in increasing pattern con-ductivity than fracturing all outer wells with fractures of the same size. INTRODUCTION Although commercial fracturing has been used for some time very little quantitative information is known about the effects of fractures on reservoir behavior. The purpose of this work was to estimate the effect of horizontal fractures in thick reservoirs on the con-ductivity of various flooding and cycling patterns.2 Circular fractures originating at the wellbore and extending symmetrically into the pay were considered. ANALYSIS Electrical models were used in making this study. Horizontal fractures were simulated by copper sheets shaped like the fractures and of a proportional size; the wellbore was simulated by a copper wire. A dilute salt solution served as a conducting medium. A con-ductivity bridge was used to measure the conductivities of the various patterns studied. EFFECT OF HORIZONTAL FRACTURES ON CONDUCTIVITY Fig. 1 shows the effect on square and staggered line drive patterns of horizontal fractures located in the center of the pay. The model is shown schematically in the insert. The upper and lower groups of lines show the effect on conductivity when all wells are fractured, and when only one well is fractured, respectively. In general, pattern conductivities are substantially improved by fracturing all wells. Fig. 2 shows the effect of multiple horizontal frac-tures on the conductivity of a line-drive pattern. At

IN view of the great importance of accurate knowledge respecting the chemistry of iron and steel, as related to their physical properties, I come before you with a paper showing the great mass of work which has been heretofore done on the subject. I have tabulated the more important data I bring at this time, so as to draw out the results clearly. This information is accessible to all who will seek for it. I have made it the basis of my own practice throughout, and such knowledge is undoubtedly the only foundation, for the successful practice of metallurgy. As is well known the ordnance corps of our army, after 1841, made exhaustive experiments on the properties of cast-iron. The investigations were undertaken in order to obtain necessary information on the reorganization of the corps. I wish to call your attention to the results obtained by a comparison of the chemical and physical properties of cast-iron for guns, to describe certain characteristic peculiarities of steel, and to give a brief history of the chemical work relating to carbon in iron. Every business man who has reached the age of forty, or perhaps even thirty, must know from his own experience that there are occasional periods of "good times'' and others of "bad times "-booms and panics. Those who give to business some complexion of science have invented a semiscientific name for these alternations-the business cycle-indicating that it is a normal phenomenon which by its own nature repeats itself. The longer one lives and the more one enlarges his own experience by the study of history, the more of these cycles he knows and the more disposed he becomes to take their recurrence for granted. If these alternations can be put into the category of common- places, why not treat them as such? We are in a sharp depression right now, why worry about it? Is there not a certain average value for business that can be depended upon in spite of depressions? By way of rejoinder one might answer that war is the great commonplace of history, but when we get into one we generally find it worthy of attention. In the present case, many a man has lost two-thirds of his income, and he is extremely nervous about finding it again. THIS paper reports the results of the use of salt in some research work carried on during the past 3 years at the Salt Lake City Station of the Bureau of Mines, which is quartered in the University of Utah, whose Metallurgical Research Department cooperates with the Bureau. Only the work involving the use of salt is described. The authors wish equal credit given to J. F. Cullen, C. L. Larson, C. Y. Proutz, C. E. Sims, H. C. Neeld, R. W. Johnson, F. G. Moses, N. C. Christensen, and G. H. Wigton, who have all in some way contributed toward the success of this work. Lead Metallturgy Popularly Supposed to be Without Problems In bead metallurgy it is difficult at first to find metallurgical problems, as the prevailing conception has been that bead is so easily concentrated in its various ores and so easily reduced to its metallic form that the only progress possible is that involved in cheapening methods of mining and of reduction. Most of the problems usually considered are of minor nature and do not involve radical metallurgical changes. During the 3 years of work of the Salt Lake Station, the following classification of problems in the metallurgy of bend has been made: Those involving Oxidized Ores. 1. Ores containing only bead. s. Ores containing bead and silver or gold. 3. Ores containing bead and zinc, with or without silver. Sulphide Ores. 1. Ores of pyrite carrying some bead. 2. Ores of complex zinc-bead-iron sulphides. 3. Complex sulphides containing in addition precious metals.

Introduction THE use of roll scale in the Bessemer process dates back, to the "best of our knowledge, at least 20 years. It was first used by the Ohio Steel Co.; Youngstown, Ohio (now the Ohio Works of the Carnegie Steel Co.) under the direction of Sam, MacDonald, Superintendent of the Bessemer Department at these works. Two 10-ton vessels and one blowing engine capable of blowing one heat at a time were employed. The object of using the scale was to -shorten the length of the blow; or in other words, to increase the production with the same equipment. Various means were tried out for introducing the roll scale into the bath of molten iron: It was shoveled into the vessel before the heat was charged, so that the metal would flow over the scale; it was shoveled into the bath after the vessel was turned up; it Was dumped into the empty iron ladle by the wheelbarrow-load, and at times wars dumped on top of the molten metal in the iron ladle. But the practice of introducing the scale into the iron ladle had to be abandoned on account of danger from explosions and of skulling the -ladles. It was soon learned that the proper place to charge the scale was in the empty vessel, so that when the molten iron was poured into the vessel it flowed over the scale, causing a considerable reaction to take place before the heat was turned up. Eventually, cylindrical chutes similar to those now in use were installed. Into these chutes the scale is dumped and carried into the empty vessel. Before this convenient means of introducing the scale was adopted, the Ohio Works had satisfactorily demonstrated that roll scale would increase production, by blowing 107 heats in one 12-hr. turn (1,087 tons) with one blowing engine, blowing one heat at a time; whereas, prior to the use of scale, the best practice at these works was about 80 heats under the same conditions.

A number of Cu-SiO, and Cu-A1203 alloys of low oxide content, produced by internal oxidation of copper-silicon and copper-aluminum dilute solid solutions, were exposed at temperatures up to 1050°C for fairly long times to bring about partial or total re crystallization. The creep-rupture properties of these re crystallized alloys were compared to those in the as-extruded condition at 450° C. Some of the alloys were cold worked after re crystallization to note changes in creep-rupture properties, also at 450OC. SINCE the introduction of the SAP alloy in 1949,~ many studies have been carried out on similar oxide and intermetallic dispersion hardened alloys to determine properties and to establish the mechanisms involved in the strengthening process which led to stable, high-temperature behavior.'-' To date, it has been indicated that, however achieved, the structure should be composed of a continuous ductile metal matrix in which is dispersed a fine, submicron size, hard, insoluble second phase (or at least, essentially insoluble at temperatures very near the melting point), with a submicron or near submicron interparticle spacing. Stored energy, obtained by a high strain rate deformation process appears desirable, as an additional strengthening means beyond pure dispersion.=

THIS paper is not an announcement of the successful conclusion of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corporation's pacos-pyrite problems, but merely a description of the commercial-scale, intermittent-roasting operations conducted by the writer, J. H. Lucas and others of the staff. It was prepared by request, for presentation at the February meeting of the Institute. The results obtained in Peru confirm the 1-ton-a-day experiments completed about three years ago at Kearny, N. J. by C. C. Gordon and Mr. Lucas, where it was first demonstrated that a mixture of about 80 per cent. pacos ore with 10 per cent. pyrite ore and 10 per cent. salt could be roasted intermittently in a small 1-ton-a-day Holt-Dern furnace without extraneous fuel, producing porous calcine that could be leached rapidly. Mr. Keep and his staff, by successfully introducing improvements in the construction of the commercial furnace and in their handling of material, have established beyond doubt a low cost for roasting. The other steps in the process of treating pacos and pyrite ores have not as yet been demonstrated as sufficiently conclusive to warrant their acceptance for a permanent plant. Cerro de Pasco Ores The ores of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corpn. at Cerro de Pasco, Peru, are situated at an altitude of 14,000 ft. The town and mines are served by the Cerro de Pasco Railroad, which operates between Cerro de Pasco and Oroya, the site of the company's copper and lead smelters. THE mining property of the Utah Copper Co. is situated in the West Mountain mining district, Salt Lake County, Utah, in the Oquirrh Range of mountains. GEOLOGY In a general way the rock formation of the district consists of a series of beds of quartzite and limestone intruded by a body of monzonite porphyry roughly elliptical in shape, with an east-west axis over a mile in length and a north-south axis of about 3,000 ft. This porphyry intrusion, accompanied by strong mineralizing action and fracturing, resulted in the formation of orebodies in the adjacent sedimentary rocks, and was itself sufficiently mineralized to make it one vast orebody. The Utah Copper Co.'s mining property comprises within its boundaries practically the entire outcrop of the monzonite mass, of a commercial grade. GENESIS OF PORPHYRY ORE Following an intricate system of fracturing, mineral solutions circulated freely through the porphyry, depositing small quantities of copper and iron, and resulting in a considerable silicification of the monzonite. The quantity of copper originally deposited was undoubtedly too small to have ever given the porphyry a commercial value, had not secondary enrichment, due to the leaching of the copper from the surface of the mass and re-deposition in the sulphide zone, been active over a long period of years. A large portion of the leached material has probably been .removed by erosion, but there still remains a blanket of leached and oxidized porphyry of varying thickness covering the sulphide ore, known as capping. Over certain sections of the orebody, this capping contains commercial quantities of copper carbonates, but most of it contains little or no copper.

There is reason to believe that ventilation systems so far devised for use with continuous mining machines fall far short of success. This is vividly demonstrated to anyone who has observed in a continuous miner section the localized ignitions of pockets of gas and the generation of dense clouds of dust by the cutting head of the machine. The alarming frequency with which major ignitions and disasters continue to occur in modern mechanical mining and the rise in incidence of pneumoconiosis serve as reminders that our ventilation systems are far from achieving the ultimate in providing protection from either short-term explosions or long- term dust diseases, both of which take lives. Human safety is the main concern in ventilation. But in this day of high-priced labor, let us not forget human comfort, either, for this is a major factor in motivation toward high productivity. The failure or inadequacy of most mine ventilation systems in providing the kind of working conditions at the face that are conducive to productive as well as safe operation is an indictment of our environ- mental control program in mining generally.

The International Nickel Co., Ontario Div. mines, faced with rising production requirements, short labor supply, and ever increasing labor costs turned to mechanized mining for a solution to its problems. The degree of mechanization of ore removal has increased from 1966 with the purchase of the first diesel-powered load-haul-dump (LHD) machine to the present, with over 53% of all underground production handled by these units. Keeping pace with mechanized ore removal, there has been a parallel development of drilling equipment to complement the mucking units. This paper deals with the applications and economic advantages of mechanized drilling at the underground mines of Inco, Ontario Div. It covers the use of various types of mechanized drills in such mining methods as cut-and-fill, induced block caving, and sublevel caving. The economics of raise boring are also discussed.

Barite deposits occur in the Iglesiente-Sulcis district of southwestern Sardinia, an historically important lead-silver-zinc district. Barite, often genetically associated with the base metal deposits, has become an independently important economic commodity. Barite deposition in southwestern Sardinia was related to Caledonian, Hercynian, and Alpine orogenic cycles. A model is presented that relates synsedimentary, karstic, vein, and residual deposits. Synsedimentary deposits are widespread, have common depositional characteristics, and act as sources, along with hydrothermal systems, for other barite deposit types. Caledonian-, Hercynian-, and Alpine-related secondary enrichment processes resulted in residual and karstic deposits that are complex in terms of their geometry and texture, but are more economically important than those of synsedimentary or hydrothermal origin.

The authors investigated the comminution of quartz and limestone mixtures in a ball mill, showing that the distribution modulus of a comminuted material is the same whether it is ground separately or as part of a mixture. Analysis of the ground products indicates that quartz and limestone consume energy during ball milling in proportion to their mass fraction in the mixtures. Recently Schuhmann' made a significant contribution to comminution theory by proposing that complex comminution operations comprise the summation of many individual comminution events. By means of the single comminution event hypothesis, Schuhmann derived the Charles energy-size reduction relationship by considering that fragments of every particle crushed during a single impact have a size distribution characterized by the Schuhmann size distribution. In this paper, the size reduction of mixtures of solids in ball mills is analyzed by considering that size reduction occurs as many single comminution events. If a mixture of two materials is being ground in a ball mill, each successful impact of a ball with a particle of one material should yield an assembly of particles whose size distribution is characteristic of that material. Kansas produced 38,150,878 bbl. of oil in 1928 and 40,658,170 bbl. in 1929, thereby retaining its rank as fourth among the oil-producing states of this country. Production for 1928 was less than that for 1927 (Fig. 1) because of a decrease in the number of completions, but the average initial production per well (Table 1) shows an increase due to the completion of wells of comparatively large capacity in the new Valley Center pool of Sedgwick County. This increase in average initial production per well was further augmented during 1929 by completion of additional wells of comparatively large capacity in the Valley Center pool and the new Greenwich pool of Sedgwick County. While the reducing action of organic matter, of ferrous sulphate, and of hydrogen sulphide has frequently been invoked to account for the deposition of native gold and silver from ore-forming solutions, the high efficiency in this respect of certain of the metallic minerals which form the ore itself has not been suffciently recognized. If a little finely powdered chalcocite is placed in a test-tube arid 2 or 3 cc. of a dilute solution of gold chloride are poured over it, two or three shakes of the tube suffice to remove all the gold from the solution. The color of the solution changes from yellow to pale green, showing that copper is dissolved simultaneously with the precipitation of metallic gold. If a piece of chalcocite is hung in a dilute aqueous solution of silver sulphate (1/40 normal), a coating of silver begins immediately to form on the mineral, and within a few moments a beautiful silver tree has developed, similar to that formed when metallic zinc is immersed in a similar solution. When similar experiments are conducted with other sulphides and with certain arsenides and sulph-arsenides, especially those known to be commonly associated with native silver in ore deposits, it is found that these minerals differ greatly in their efficiency as precipitants, especially in their effect on silver solutions. The tests made with most of the minerals were qualitatipe only, but the reactions of a silver sulphate solution on chalcocite and niccolite were submitted to quantitative study to determine the nature of the reactions involved. The dike here described is exposed in the workings of the Wedge and Bachelor mines, on the southern side of Red Canon, north of the town of Ouray, Colorado. Its course is north 80° east, or nearly east and west, and it hades to the north about 10°. It rarely outcrops, and was nowhere seen at the surface near the mines. A specimen collected by Dr. A. C. Spencer about two miles to the westward, near the mouth of Red Creek, indicates, however, a probable exposure of the dike near this point. The Wedge and Bachelor mines lie in a nearly horizontal series of fine-grained, light-grey sandstones, alternating with beds of very fine-grained shale of the same color. The shale as encountered underground is unusually compact and massive, but weathers readily on exposure, and splits much after the manner of ordinary shale. When fresh it closely resembles some finely arenaceous limestones, but it does not effervesce with acids, and is eseentially a fine, indurated, siliceous silt.
