DURING the course of an investigation on the high-temperature creep behavior of TD Nickel* (Ni + 2) vol pct ThO2), it was observed that the creep fractures were similar in appearance to low-temperature ductile fibrous fractures and creep ruptures by cavitation. Microfractographs of fibrous ruptures are typically characterized by a dimpled appearance, with second-phase particles frequently found near the bottom of the dimples.'-4 These somewhat resemble creep ruptures by cavitation, in that fracture occurs by void formation, with the subsequent growth and final merging of the voids to form a complete fracture.' It is the purpose of this communication to describe the creep fracture of TD nickel and suggest a mechanism for the rupturing process. The discussion is relevant to material crept to fracture in vacuo at a constant stress of 18,000 psi, over the temperature range 900" to ll00°C. The material used in this investigation was 1/2-in.-diam bar stock supplied by Du Pont, contain- ing 2.3 vol pct Tho2. The final fabrication treatment consisted of -95 pct reduction by swaging followed by a 1-hr anneal at 1000°C. Transmission and replica electron microscopy revealed that the material had a fibered structure with a transverse grain size of -1 µ and a longitudinal grain size of 10 to 15 µ. Selected-area diffraction indicated that the fiber axis was parallel to (00l), in agreement with the results of Inman et a1.6 The thoria particle size varied from 80 to 1000Å, with an average size of 400Å, and the mean particle spacing was about 1200Å. The remarkable structural stability7 was confirmed by annealing for 6 hr at 1300°C (about ' 0.9 the absolute melting point). Transmission electron microscopy revealed that the only structural change was a slight decrease in dislocation density. Furthermore, recrystallization or grain growth during creep has not been observed. All specimens were annealed in vacuo at 1300°C for 3 hr prior to creep testing. In 1933, R. paris1 published a phase diagram for the entire Mg-Ca-Zn system. He reported the existence of a ternary intermetallic phase, Mg5Zn5Ca2, which formed a quasi-binary with the magnesium solid solution. Since then, no extensive work has been reported on the system. Recently however, indications of the existence of a second ternary in-termetallic phase in equilibrium with the magnesium solid solution led to a reinvestigation of the solid phase equilibria involving the magnesium solid solution. The 335°C (635°F) isothermal section was chosen for study. Metallography and powder X-ray diffraction were selected as the best mutually corroborating methods for determining the solid phase constitution. Seventy-six alloys were prepared from singly sublimed (99.95 pct) magnesium, electrolytic (99.95 pct) zinc and USP calcium. The analyses of some of the alloys are shown in Fig. 1. The alloys were melted in a graphite crucible under a chloride flu and chill cast in a split graphite mold. Dif-fusion couples (see Fig. 2) were prepared by casting molten Mg-20 wt pct Zn alloy around a cylinder of Mg-30 wt pct Ca alloy. The alloy samples and the diffusion couples were sealed under argon in Pyrex vials and annealed in a furnace capable of controlling within 1/2°C of 335°C. At the conclusion of the anneal, the alloy samples were quenched in ice water and the diffusion couples were air cooled. Procedures standard for magnesium alloys were used for metallographic examination. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns were taken on a G. E. camera with a 14.32 cm dim using nickel-filtered copper radiation. The redetermined 335°C (635°) section of the Mg-Ca-Zn phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. (Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) NICKEL has always been a fruitful mother of problems. Previous to the year 1906 nickel was regarded as an element replacing iron in copper-mattes, and it was believed that the same laws which governed the elimination of iron could be applied-to nickel. This conception has lately undergone a complete change, and nickel in all its stages is now regarded as an element replacing copper; in other words, copper-nickel is considered now as two elements, but as one metal. When we commenced our investigations on Monel metal we made a great many experiments on the conversion of mattes, both high copper and high nickel. We studied closely the composition of the mattes and the changes produced by the blow. We found in all cases certain agreements which we believe are due to some law. Briefly stated, our conclusions are as follows 1. Nickel is not an element replacing iron in matte. 2. Nickel-copper alloys act in the matte-blow like one metal. 3. Nickel-copper alloys follow, during the matte-blow, exactly the same laws as govern. the behavior of copper alone. This brings up the question : What are the laws governing the production of metallic copper, and what are the relations copper to sulphur and iron during the Bessemer blow ?

Condusions. From the work on aluminum powder, the following general con clusions can bc drawn: I. The physical properties of aluminum compacts, such as density. strength and ductility, increase with increasing pressure, up to the practicable pressure limits. 2. Good properties ill aluminum con pacts can be secured only by the use of high pressures, because it is neccssary to rupture the refractory oxide film on aluminum powder. 3. Considerable softening of the specimens occurs upon sintering. regardlers of the pressure used. General Conclusions 1. For relatively short-time sintering. molding pressure is a very important factor in the final physical properties of the sintered specimens. 2. The effect of pressure. is difierent for each metal, so that few general rules can be drawn that would apply to all metals. 3. In many cases, fur a particular metal powder and sintering temperature there is a critical pressure at which the best physical properties can be obtained. 4. The principles of cold work and in nealing and their effect on grain structure applied to massive metal also holds true for sintered metals. 5. IN previous metallographic work on titanium and its alloys, difficulty has been encountered in distinguishing spheroidal particles of titanium hydride, dispersed in a-titanium, from other phases that may be present, such as p-titanium. This problem is common in examination of commercial unalloyed titanium.' In the course of an investigation of the Ti-H phase diagram, it was noted that titanium hydride, dispersed in a matrix of a-titanium, showed strong optical anisotropy when examined under polarized light. With sensitive tint illumination, particles of the hydride, when the stage is rotated, changed from bright yellow to bright blue in color. Since P-titanium is cubic, it showed no color change on rotation, remaining dark gray or blue-gray. Although a-titanium is hexagonal, it showed only a minor color change, going from pale pinkish-blue to pale purplish-blue. These colors could be modified somewhat by adjustment of the illumination. They were observed in specimens mechanically polished, both without etching and after etching with hydrofluoric acid-nitric acid mixtures in either water or glycerine. The strong color change of the hydride seems to offer a simple method for its metallographic identification. Optical anisotropy of titanium hydride is inconsistent with its accepted face-centered-cubic structure.' Samples of iodide titanium containing 6 to 40 atomic pct deuterium were prepared for diffraction studies. After deuterating and slow cooling' the samples were held 21 % hr at 400 °C, water quenched, held 61 hr at 100°C and quenched, then held 64% hr at 255 C and quenched. Debye ex-posures with MoKa X-rays and 1.111A neutrons were made at room temperature of samples as-deuterated and after the 100" and 255°C treatments. Table I shows the lines observed, in addition to those attributable to a-titanium. These data show that the hydride phase was not cubic, but probably tetragonal. The titanium atoms appeared to form a body-centered-tetragonal lattice complex, two titanium atoms per cell, with approximate dimensions: a = 3.12A, c = 4.18A, and c/a =1.34A. This is equivalent to a face-centered-tetragonal complex, four titanium atoms per cell, with approximate dimensions: a = 4.42A, c = 4.18A, and c/a - 0.946A. The presence of the 2.98 and 1.81A neutron lines indicates that the true Bravais lattice is not identical with this lattice complex, but may be primitive tetragonal with dimensions some multiple of those of the complex. The relative intensities of the hydride and a-titanium X-ray lines as functions of overall composition indicated that the hydride, presumably in equilibrium with the a at 100" to 255"C, contained more than 62 atomic pct H. THE purpose of this chapter is to present a general outline of the basic open-hearth process for the benefit of students, practicing open-hearth operators, and metallurgists who wish to review the subject. The discussion is limited to a description of the sequence and purpose of the operations, illustrated by data and examples. Subsequent chapters deal with more detailed and fundamental studies of the subject. The function of the basic open-hearth furnace is to convert various types of ferrous material into finished steel of given com- position and quality. In comparison with other steelmaking methods, the basic open-hearth process is one of the most versa- tile, both from the standpoint of the raw materials that can be used and the types of steel that can be produced. The process can be considered as a sequence involving melting, refining, and deoxidation. With some types of liquid-metal charges, the melting stage is not present, but refining and deoxidation in varying degrees are fundamental features of the process. GENERAL DISCUSSION OF BASIC OPEN-HEARTH PROCESS The first consideration in open-hearth practice is the type of charge on which the operation is based. This consists of three components-fluxing, oxidizing, and metallic materials. Fluxes. In the basic process the fluxing material is primarily lime, added in the form of either limestone (CaC03) or burnt lime (CaO) . This is supplemented by magnesia (MgO) and lime from the furnace bottom and banks. The function of these fluxes is to form a slag with the silica (SiO2) , manganese oxide (MnO), iron oxides (FeO and Fe203), and phosphorus oxide (P205) that are produced by the oxidation of varying amounts of the silicon, manganese, iron, and phosphorus in the charge during melting and refining. The slag, composed of the basic fluxes and the neutral and acid oxides, floats on top of the steel bath when the charge is melted. Modern shaft kilns in Europe are fully mechanized and burn cement of acceptable quality at 700,000 Btu per bbl and lime at 3.2 million Btu per net ton. Rotary kilns for cement have increased in thermal efficiency by using exit gas heat for preheating incoming raw material and by recovering heat from outgoing clinker in air-quench coolers. The dry process Lepol or ACL kiln has the lowest fuel consumption, 580,000 to 630,000 Btu per bbl, and very low dust loss, about 1 pct weight of clinker. The Holdebank-Gygi system reaches 720,000 Btu per bbl. The calcinator kiln for the wet process consumes 1.1 million Btu per bbl. IN every country economic circumstances prescribe the method used to produce a commodity at lowest cost. In Pennsvlvania a man's wages for working 4 hr buys a ton of coal wholesale; in Germany a laborer must work 40 hr, or ten times as long. In western Europe, therefore, conservation of fuel is of primary importance, and recent practices of burning lime and cement differ from those employed in the United States. The Si-0 equilibrium in liquid iron was investigated in some detail by Gokcen and Chipman1 who reported equilibrium constants of the following reactions: In each case the thermodynamic equilibrium constant K was obtained by extrapolating K' to infinite dilution. Their results on reaction [I] were consistent with those of earlier observers, and there seems to be little doubt as to the approximate validity of the equilibrium product determined. On the other hand, the results on reactions [2] and [3] indicated unusual curvilinear relationships between the activity coefficients of silicon and of oxygen and the silicon concentration. Since a linear relation is observed in all other similar instances, it was concluded that some source of error had affected the gas-metal equilibrium relationships. Recently the authors undertook a restudy of these equilibria with the view especially to establishing the equilibrium constant of reaction [2]. Their experiments, however, were discontinued before a tbroughly satisfactory answer had been obtained and consequently have remained unpublished until the present time. Quite recently Matoba, Gunji, and Kuwana2 published the results of a very thorough study of these equilibria. It is the purpose of the present note to Compare these three sets of experimental data, a comparison which leads to Confirmation of the results of Matoba and coworkers. The experimental arrangements described by Dutilloy and Chipman were employed. A controlled mixture of Hz, H,0, and argon was led into the induction furnace over the surface of the Fe-Si melt contained in a silica crucible. On account of the slow approach to equilibrium, runs were continued for at least 8 hr and, in some cases, as much as 12 hr. Samples were taken by means of silica tubes at the start and during the final 4-hr period of each run. Out of twelve runs only seven appeared to have approached equilibrium with sufficient certainty to be reported here. The results of these experiments, all at 1600°c, are shown by the triangles in Fig. 1. Equilibrium was approached from both oxidizing and reducing conditions and the direction of approach is indicated by the shape of the triangle. Attempts to extend the study to higher silicon concentrations were unsuccessful on account of the transfer of silica from the metal bath to the upper portions of the crucible by means of a silicon-monoxide mechanism. Matoba, Gunji, and Kuwana used similar methods and approached equilibrium from both sides. Their results at three temperatures are shown by the solid lines of Fig. 1. A line corresponding to 1600 deg is interpolated from their equations and is shown by the dotted line. The results of Gokcen and Chipman at 1600 deg in the range 0.02 to 2.0 pct Si are also shown. At concentrations up to about 0.6 pct Si, these investigators approached equilibrium from both directions, and their results in this range appear to be trustworthy. Above 1 pct Si, however, all of their experiments involved oxidation only, as shown by a decrease in the silicon content of the bath. It now seems certain that they failed to reach equilibrium at these higher silicon concentrations and that the curvilinear relation shown by their results is incorrect. It is evident that their results in the lower silicon range are in good agreement with those of Matoba and coworkers. In fact, a straight line drawn through their results would parallel the dotted line and would differ from it by only 0.05 in log K. The new data also lie close to that line. It may thus be concluded that the three sets of data are in good agreement and that the equations proposed by Matoba and coworkers for reaction [2] are satisfactory . Before describing the electrostatic processing of feldspar, it might be well to review some of the basic definitions and terminology of feldspars. The feldspar minerals constitute a group of alumino-silicates of potassium, sodium, and calcium. Barium feldspar sometimes occurs naturally but is very rare. Hardness varies between 6 and 6.5 and specific gravity between 2.5 and 2.8. Color is generally white or pale shades of red, yellow, or green. This paper examines recent developments and work in progress on the application of quantitative methods and computers to the appraisal of the mineral resource potential of discrete areas by employing reconnaissance geological information and general economic relationships. The perspective of this paper might be that of a firm planning a regional exploration program or of a legislative body seeking to choose between several alternative actions on the basis of their impact upon the regional resources. In addition to this general survey and commentary, an example is presented of the use of geostatistical analysis and computer simulation to evaluate the economic mineral resources of the Seward Peninsula of Alaska.

In connection with the gathering of data for a report on the geology of the Humacao district of southeastern Porto Rico during the summer of 1916, under the auspices of the Scientific Survey of Porto Rico and the Virgin Islands, conducted by the New York Academy of Sciences, the writer had an opportunity to make a brief examination of the magnetite deposits of the eastern portion of the island. Inasmuch as these deposits have attracted some attention as possible future sources of iron ore, and as there is only scanty reference made to them in literature,' a short description based on this reconnaissance survey was deemed to be worthy of record. The magnetite deposits of eastern Porto Rico occur in association with a belt of limestone, trending approximately S 53° E, which begins 11/2 miles east of Juncos and can be traced for about 6 miles toward the coast. Four outcrops of magnetite were observed, which are designated as Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively, on the map shown in Fig. 1. INTRODUCTION - DEFINITION & HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE While this symposium is concerned with comminution which, by definition, relates to all stages of size reduction of an ore body to a form suitable for mineral separation, the electrical drive aspect of the grinding section will receive most attention in contrast to the crushing, screening and materials handling elements of the process. The reason for this is that today's large mills, thirty feet diameter and upwards, present mechanical and electrical problems which require a degree of sophistication in their solution not previously required. The ability to satisfy these demands, so far as electrical technology is concerned, largely results from the development of semi-conductor devices. These can now handle typical electrical distribution power levels within remarkably s m all volumes and with high efficiency when compared with the motor-generator sets, mercury arc rectifiers, rotating amplifiers, magnetic amplifiers and vacuum tubes which were commonly used to provide speed and torque controls as recently as the early nineteen-sixties. The hardware available to the electrical engineer has changed dramatically whereby even the simplest control system formerly using hard-wired relays is now superseded by the program m able logic controller with its computer-like memory containing the sequence of operation, in other words, the software. Reverting now to the mineral process itself, it is assumed that the ore body has been mined using explosives and is delivered to the concentrating plant in its 'run of mine' form. The problem becomes one of reducing the material to a size which will permit an acceptable recovery of the mineral with the most economical use of energy. The size of 'run of mine' material will range from about minus five feet for high tonnage open pit operations to minus two feet for the smaller underground mine. The final reduction in size may range from minus ten mesh to minus two hundred mesh (exceptionally as fine as minus six hundred mesh) depending upon the concentration method and dissemination of the mineral values within the ore. There is no single circuit that satisfies all applications, but the pattern of metallurgical equipment use shown in Table 1 appears discernable from current practice, in general terms.

WHEN gold was discovered in California, and San Francisco grew almost over night from a handful of people to many thousands, one of the first difficulties experienced was the lack of money. Gold dust in considerable quantities was rushed into the city from the various mining camps but there was no money. Purchases were paid for by weighing out dust in hand scales. We can appreciate' the difficulty of paying for a drink or buying a postage stamp under these conditions. All this gold was in the form of dust from placer workings and the first metallurgists were the assayers' who melted and refined this gold, casting it into bars which were weighed, assayed, stamped with fineness; value, and the name of the assayer. Many .of these plants were of considerable size, handling shipments that were accumulated by banks and express companies throughout the "Diggings" and sent to San Francisco to be shipped by water to the eastern states. I. INTRODUCTION. THE purpose of this paper is, first, to give a general account of a little-known coal-district of SE. Kentucky, its topography, drainage, and mineral resources, for those who may be interested in its economic development; and secondly, so to describe the geologic features of the field as to furnish available data to those engaged on the broader problems of Appalachian coal-geology. The data from which the major portion of the paper has been prepared were obtained, in professional investigations for private individuals and corporations, within the last decade. The area under review, defined by a heavy line on the map, Fig. 1, lies between Little Black and Pine mountains, and extends from Harlan on the west to a N-S. line crossing Looney creek 3 miles from its mouth on the east. This area can be divided for description into a Western and an Eastern Division. The character of investigation pursued in the Western Division, below Fugitt creek, was very different from that employed in the Eastern. In the former, only a rapid reconnoissance was attempted : such coal-openings as had been made by prospectors or by citizens in obtaining fuel were visited, their sections measured and, in many instances, sampled. Elevations were obtained barometrically and approximate locations sketched on a small-scale map. In a field where the coals are so well opened, the reconnoissance method gives a very fair idea of the number and character of the principal beds and their relative positions, and affords much evidence for their correlation over wide areas, without permitting the more refined work required to discover all the seams of the measures and to determine the details of geologic structure.

Methods and results of measuring three basic parameters for ground stability control, ground pressure, strata movement, and geomechanical properties of mine rock are presented in this paper. It is found that these parameters can be measured in situ by simple and practical techniques with nonsophisticated and inexpensive instruments. Specifically, a drillhole dilation technique employing a cylindrical hydraulic borehole pressure cell (CPC) was used to determine the modulus of rigidity. Premining ground pressures were determined by pressure convergence tests with a combination of one CPC and two pre-encapsulated flat hydraulic borehole pressure cells (BPC) installed in a single drillhole. Abutment pressures and pillar loading were monitored with BPC's. Differential strata movements and bed separations were measured with self-recording 10-anchor-point extensometers. Roof-to-floor convergence was measured with self-recording convergence meters. Some applications of these in-situ-determined parameters to mine design and ground stability control are also discussed.
