When a copper or aluminum single crystal is swaged into wire, the resulting deformation texture depends on the original orientation of the crystal. The<100> and <111>orientations me essentially stable, while <110> is unstable. The greater the <100> content of the deformation texture, the stronger the wire is in torsion. the greater the<111>content, the stvonger it is in tenszotz. The preferred orientation (texture) of fcc wires, either after deformation or recrystallization, is usually a double fiber texture in which some grains have <100> parallel to the wire axis and others have <111>. The relative amounts of these two texture components, as reported by different investigators for the same metal, vary considerably. Previous work in this laboratory&apos; has shown that the starting texture of a wire, i.e., the texture which it has before deformation, can have a decided influence on the texture produced by deformation. In particular, it was found that the deformation texture of copper wire is essentially a single <100> texture, if the wire before deformation contains only a <100> component. This is true even when the deformation is carried to more than 98 pct reduction in area. This paper reports on further studies of the role played by the starting texture. Copper and aluminum single crystals of various orientations have been cold swaged into wire, and quantitative measurements of the resulting deformation textures have been made. The tensile and torsional properties of the deformed wires have also been measured, and the relation between these properties has been correlated with the texture of the wire. These measurements were made in order to demonstrate that a cold-worked wire can be made relatively strong in torsion and weak in tension, or vice versa, by proper selection of the texture before deformation. MATERIALS The copper was of the tough-pitch variety, containing, by weight, 99.962 pct Cu, 0.003 pct Fe, 0.025 pct 0, and 0.0021 pct Si. The aluminum contained more than 99.99 pct .&apos;41; the only reported impurities were 0.001 pct Fe, 0.001 pct Si, and 0.003 pct Zn, by weight. Large single crystals of these metals were grown by the Bridgman method in graphite crucibles and a helium atmospliere. Cylindrical specimens of predetermined orientation, about 1.5 in. long and 0.36 in. in diameter, were machined from the as-grown crystals and then etched to 0.25 in. to remove the effects of machining. Their orientations were checked by back-reflection Laue photographs, and they were then swaged to a diameter of 0.050 in. (96 pct reduction in area). 111 order to study the "inside texture" of the deformed wires, they were etched, after swaging, to a diameter of 0.040 in. before the texture measurements were made. TEXTURE MEASUREMENTS The fiber texture which exists in wire or rod can be represented by a curve showing the relation between the pole density I, for some selected crystal-lographic plane, and the angle $ between the pole of that plane and the wire axis (fiber axis). Such a curve will show maxima at particular values of , and these values disclose the texture components which are present. The relative amounts of these components can be determined2&apos;3 from the areas under the maxima on a curve of I sin F vs F. It is seldom necesszlry to measure I over the whole range of F from 0 to 90 deg, since the existence of maxima in the low-F relgion can be inferred from measurements confined to the high-F region. The X-ray measurements were made with a General Electric XRD-5 diffractometer and filtered copper radiation, according to one or the other of the following procedures: 1) A method developed in this laboratory,4 involving diffraction from a single piece of wire. 2) A modification of the Field and Merchant method.5 This method was originally devised for the examination of sheet specimens, but it can easily be adapted to the measurement of fiber texture. Three or four short lengths of wire are held in grooves machined in the flat face of a special lucite specimen holder. The axes of the wires are parallel to the plane defined by the incident and diffracted X-ray beams, and the holder to which the wires are attached can be rotated step-wise about the diffractometer axis for measurements at various angles 9.

A layer of brass was formed on 0 brass using a vapor-solid reaction technique. The variation in composition with distance within the phase layer and across the a -ß interface was determined by an electron probe. The diffusivities were calculated as a function of concentration; the diffusion coefficient in brass was found to change by a factor of twenty-five over a compositional range of 8 at. pct. An explanation is proposed to account for the large change in the diffusivity, based on possible stresses in the diffusion zone; it is suggested that the concentration dependence of the thermodynamic factor might decrease the activation energy with increasing zinc content. ALTHOUGH the body of data on diffusion coefficients (D- values) in terminal solid solutions and in isomorphous systems is quite large, there is but little quantitative information for intermediate alloy phases. This paper recounts measurements of D-values for the ? phase in the Cu-Zn system. The experimental method employed consists in the forming of alloy layers and determining and analyzing the concentration-distance (c-x) curve. The experimental method employed could have been applied to several systems; the Cu-Zn system was chosen because the D-values in the a and ß phases are well known, and can thus be used for purposes of comparison. The rates of growth, of intermediate alloy layers are known for a number of systems. In nearly all cases the thickness varies parabolically with time, as to be expected if the rate of growth is controlled by the D-values. In a few cases, nonparabolic behavior has been noted.1 Nonparabolic growth may be the result of a) a variation of the composition at the phase interface with time, b) interface-controlled kinetics, c) short diffusion times coupled with long vacancy lifetimes (in vacancy diffusion),2 and d) crystal reorientation during diffusion in anisotropic systems.3 In the Al-Ni system4 and in the Al-u5 system parabolic growth kinetics are slowly approached after an initial transient period. In general those phases stable at a given temperature in a system A-B appear as separate phase layers when A and B are put in contact and given a diffusion he at-treatment. In most cases the compositions at the interface of adjacent phase layers are those read from the phase diagrams for the termini of the respective phases. This discontinuity in concentration is taken as independent of time, and the growth of one phase at the expense of another is assumed to be independent of interface kinetics, i.e., the rate of interface movement is controlled by volume diffusion in the phases concerned. wagner6 has given many solutions for multi-phase diffusion processes, assuming that the chemical diffusion coefficient, D, is independent of concentration, as have others. Jost7 has pointed out that the familiar Boltzmann-Matano solution is as valid for a (c-x) curve exhibiting concentration discontinuities at phase boundaries as for the usual single-phase case. Heumann and associates8,9 have applied this solution to the multi-phase case, but lacking concentration data within the several layers were forced to assume linear concentration gradients, thus calculating only average D-values. The purposes of the present study were: 1) to determine the dependence of D on concentration, 2) to calculate the intrinsic diffusion coefficients D?Cu and D?Zn, 3) to establish the time-law for the movement of the interface, 4) to determine the concentration limits at the ß-? interface, and, 5) to attempt to clarify the mechanism of diffusion. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The ? phase is exceedingly brittle; conventional solid couples and conventional sectioning methods were thus inapplicable. Vapor-solid couples were accordingly employed. Unfortunately the equilibrium vapor pressures of Zn for the ? phase are unknown; to escape this awkwardness, samples were enclosed in a capsule containing powder of an alloy of known composition, sufficiently large in quantity as to be effectively an infinite source, maintaining the concentration of Zn at the sample surface constant with time. The sources of Zn-vapor which can be employed in reaction with Cu, or a brass, or ß brass, to form a layer of ? brass satisfactorily wide in concentration range, are alloys of the phases ?, or ? + E or ? + d (depending on the temperature).

THE American Institute of Mining Engineers was organized in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania by men who were primarily interested in anthracite. Its first meeting, at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., in the Northern Anthracite field, on May 16, 1871, resulted from a call sent out by three outstanding men of the anthracite .industry: Eckley B. Coxe, R. P. Rothwell, and Martin Coryell. The best known of these was Eckley B. Coxe, who was the manager of large hold¬ings operated by him and his family,. and who is remembered as the inventor of a special grate for burning very fine anthracite, known as the Coxe traveling grate, which is still very widely used. R. P. Rothwell was a well-known consulting engineer of the region, as was Martin Coryell, who was associated with another well-known anthracite family, the Pardees. There is no record of the discussions that resulted in this initial meeting, but it is safe to assume that the formation of the Institute was largely influenced, through appreciation by the founders, of the necessity for a free exchange of information covering the whole of the mining industry. THE removal of sulfur from steel has been studied by many investigators, but the quantitative relationships between the factors involved have not been determined. This is undoubtedly due to the number of variables encountered in practice, an attempt to study any one reaction or relation being affected by other reactions the relative importance of which cannot be estimated. The factors that affect the extent of removal of sulfur in the basic open-hearth process are generally considered to be: 1. Basicity of the slag: (a) Iron oxides in the slag; (b) carbon in the metal, or carbide in the slag; (c) temperature. These factors affect the reactions: FeS + CaO = CaS + FeO FeS + CaO + C = CaS + CO + Fe. 2. Amount of sulfur in the gas. 3. Amount of manganese in the metal. The factors which affect the rate of removal of sulfur include, in addition to these 4. Fluidity of the slag: (a) Normal changes in fluidity with temperature; (b) changes in fluidity because of the addition of special reagents such as fluorspar. 5. Agitation of the bath.

IT is now well established that quenched and tempered titanium alloys have much better ductility when the quenching is from a two phase a-B structure, rather than from an all B structure. The corresponding microstructural differences, however, have not been shown in previous publications. Accordingly, specimens were cut from a % in. rod of commercial RC-130A, containing 7.9 pct Mn and 0.12 pct C, which had been previously hot rolled, heated 1 hr at 1100°F, and air cooled. (The same heat has been studied by others." 7 Samples about 1/4 in. cube were heated in helium 1/2 hr at 1450&apos; or 1700°F, quenched in brine, tempered in helium 1 hr at various temperatures up to 1250°F, and quenched in brine. They were then sectioned and metallo-graphically examined, using an etchant of HF-HNO, in glycerine. As quenched from 1700°F, the microstructure observed was clear /3. (Probably also present was U, as the hardness was 400 Vhn, but w is not yet reliably revealed by any metallographic technique.)
