AUTOMOTIVE TRANSPORT by highway, which has become indispensable to modern life either in peace or war, involves the use of powerful machines, many of which travel at high speed. To start, accelerate, and stop each motor vehicle demands the use of clutch and brake. Friction is applied intensively to both these mechanisms, and their linings must therefore be of materials that will resist wear and that will not ignite with the heat of friction. Asbestos, that curious fire-resisting: natural fiber that may be woven into unburnable cloth, is eminently suitable for this special' use, and no satisfactory substitute for it has yet been found Because- asbestos is regarded as absolutely essential to all types of motor transport on land, and in addition is indispensable to. many .other kinds of machines and equipment, the situation of the- United State's with respect to supplies of-raw-material-is of special interest: From the standpoint of national self-sufficiency, conditions are far, from satisfactory, for United States mines furnish only three to four percent of the total domestic require-

(San Francisco fleeting, October, 1911.) DURING the past two years California has developed a new and important oil-field : I refer to Midway. This field produced the famous Lake View gusher, which is credited with a total production in excess of 8,000,000 barrels. Fortunately for the oil industry of the State, this well is now a thing of the past, and nothing save a great crater-like opening marks its location. The pipe is entirely worn away and gone ; and it is a matter of serious doubt if there can be anything done that will cause the well to produce again. Fortunately, also, there have been no, other wells in that field or elsewhere throughout the State that in any way compared with the Lake View. Midway is noted for large wells, of from 500 to 2,000 barrels production; but the decline is rapid, and a few months serve to bring the output down to a few hundred barrels. In the oil-territory heretofore blocked out as proved and probable, there have been, during the year, many changes. Some areas which were expected to be fairly productive have apparently failed; others, more strictly "wild-cat," have come in; while in some of the older fields there are properties which are beginning to show evident signs of exhaustion. The total area of proved territory will therefore probably suffer but small increase, when balances are struck off. The increase of new area has come from extensions of the Midway field, the development of a field in Lost Hills and Belridge, and extensions of the Fullerton-Whittier field in southern California. In these later developments, down to date, the fresh area absolutely proved is not much in excess of 3,000 acres. Recent developments in Coalinga indicate the possible extension of that field to the south, but at great depth. Coalinga is still the most northerly field of any consequence in the State. A QUARTER of a century ago, a pessimistic Belgian financier in conversation with the founder of the Belgian Congo, that great ruler, Leopold II, emphasized the danger to the colony should the synthesis of rubber be discovered. The king replied, "I do not worry. The Congo has had its ivory period; it now has its rubber period. Tomorrow it will have that of its mineral wealth; eventually that of agricultural products." That "tomorrow" arrived some twenty years ago. Through her mines the Belgian Congo has survived the present depression, and her mines for the next decade will safeguard her. The Congo, in turn. is the surest foundation industrially and financially of Belgium itself. In few, if any, political units is mining as dominant as in the Belgian Congo. In 1930, 1931 and 1932 mineral products represented respectively 67.9 per cent. 70.5 per cent and 59.3 per cent, of the total exports. In 1933 for each white person in the colony, there was produced about $1,675 worth of gold, diamonds, copper, tin ore and minor mineral products and in 1930 the per capita production, notwithstanding the larger population, was almost $2,000.

At this time, H. S. Robertson, of Harbison-Walker, is going to give you a short talk, with slides, on what has been done to date on this subject.

Consider an investor who, knowing future costs and revenues, can choose how rapidly to produce from a given mineral source. If the investor elects to make that choice to maximize present value of future profits, how do policies affect the choice? Various alternative policies are examined. Some, such as higher royalty rates, lead to slower production rates than would otherwise obtain. Clearly, the chosen rates of production are policy-dependent. One is wisely counseled to consider how mineral policies affect the rate of production from given sources when analyzing current and alternative policies.

AMONG the European nations Germany is the center of interest economically as well as politically, and of prime importance for Europe as a whole is Germany's capacity to produce mineral products for armament and for export in exchange for the import of the essential supplies to maintain its industries. So far as minerals are concerned, Germany is worse off than any other great power except Italy, and deficiencies are being met by attempts to increase output from local deposits and by greater use of substitutes derived from domestic raw materials to replace imported metals, petroleum products, and other minerals.

Large tabular beryllium deposits in waterlaid rhyolitic tuff at Spor Mountain, Utah, contain the world's largest known resources of beryllium (as bertrandite). The district also has produced fluorspar and uranium. The largest beryllium deposit is about 2.5 miles long, and known deposits contain many million tons of material with at least 0.5 per cent BeO. The beryllium-bearing tuff (Pliocene?) underlies topaz-bearing rhyolite ( Pliocene?) that contains unusually high amounts of beryllium, fluorine, and uranium, and overlies other volcanic rocks (Pliocene? or Micocene?) and marine carbonate and elastic rocks ( Paleozoic). The deposits occur in hydrothermally altered tuff only where it contains abundant carbonate pebbles eroded from the Paleozoic rocks and where the tuff was deposited as thick layers in now-buried paleovalleys. Basin and Range faults, thrust fa ults, and possibly strike-slip faults formed in this part of the Basin and Range province during the late Tertiary, and volcanic rocks were extruded. Beryllium mineralization probably occurred during this episode. Undoubtedly the beryllium deposits are related genetically to the topaz-bearing rhyolite, but the details of their genesis are not certain and probably are complex. Beryllium deposits are close to major faults, and locally the beryllium is concentrated at faults, indicating fault control of mineralization. Some elements in the deposits, such as lithium, however, are evenly distributed in certain Luff beds and perhaps were introduced prior to faulting. Still other elements, such as manganese and lead, were concentrated in the beryllium deposits and subsequently were leached along late fractures, indicating a period of metal redistribution following mineralization.

THE recently discovered occurrence of diamonds near Murfreesboro, Pike county, Ark., was brought to. our attention by Mr. Samuel W. Reyburn (Trustee for Messrs. C. S. Stifft, A. D. Cohn, August Zinsser, Jr., and himself, owners of the property), through whose courtesy we investigated the locality of the deposit. Prospecting with the diamond-drill is now in active progress ; but mining operations on a large scale have not yet been ordered. Geology.-The geology as well as the petrography of this interesting locality has been well described by Messrs. J. C. Branner and R. N. Brackett.1 Briefly summarized, the igneous rock in which the diamonds are found is a vitreous peridotite, forming a stock or volcanic neck, which has broken up through the Carboniferous and Cretaceous quartzites and sandstones. After an extensive period of erosion, during which an unknown portion of the neck and presumably a previously existent volcanic cone have been removed, the surface was covered with thin beds of Post-Tertiary conglomerate. The volcanic intrusion was accompanied by the formation of several small dikes of a rock much like that of the main body. One of these dikes cuts across the stock, while another cuts the Cretaceous sandstone, but is overlain by the conglomerate, thus giving a datum for the period of intrusion. So far as known, there was little, if any, metamorphism of the country-rock by the igneous magna, which probably followed an approximately vertical course, so that a more or less vertical extension downward of the igneous body to indefinite depths may be expected.

UNDER the stimulus of war psychology the American public has grown confused and jittery in its thinking on the subject of this nation's petroleum resources. This confusion arises from the failure of the average citizen, and even of many leaders in government, in our armed forces, and in the petroleum industry itself, to distinguish between our proved reserves of petroleum in the several oil-producing states and the total petroleum re- sources available to this nation. Leaders and public alike examine the accepted estimates of our proved reserves and thoughtlessly conclude that these estimates represent the total of our petroleum resources. Our fears are aggravated if we turn to the statistics on oil-finding and observe that the discovery of new reserves has waned decidedly in recent years. This confusion is dangerous because, under its influence, ill - considered policies spring up and flourish, choking out the most valuable fruits of the long experience of the American petroleum industry.

WAR struck the mineral industry of Washington with cross currents that produced a peculiar result. The State's production of coal, industrial minerals, and metals for 1941, valued at $28,507,282, was increased in 1942 under war pressure to approximately $35.000,000. Meanwhile a tremendous demand had arisen for men to construct airfields and many other large projects for the Army and Navy in Washington and Alaska, and Government plants for the mineral industry costing $140,000,000 or more, as well as a call for employees in the U. S. Navy Yard at Bremerton, the sixty shipyards, the four Boeing airplane factories with many auxiliary shops, and hundreds of other plants turning out war materials. In spite of an influx of nearly 300,000 people, causing an increase of 17.1 percent in the population since 1940, according to the Census Bureau, the State clearly is still engaged in an unusual amount of war production in proportion to its population. A large proportion of the workers have been drawn from the mineral industry to the war plants, whether through motives of patriotism, high wages, or, in the Boeing plants at least, the glamour of the operation

T HE Mining Methods Committee held its initial meeting* on Tuesday afternoon, with F. W. Bradley in the chair and W. Y. Westervelt as vice- chairman. The first paper to be presented was "A Plea for a U. S. Court of Patent Appeals," for which Kenneth W. Greenawalt ably pleaded. The paper (which was published in full in last month's issue) is so carefully prepared that no synopsis can do it justice. It discusses the opposed views of some patent lawyers and other lawyers and members of the judiciary as, for example, Chief Justice Taft who is quoted as saying in 1921: "I think it is a great deal better to take a first class lawyer and a first-class judge and make him a good patent expert than it is to take a patent expert and try to make him a first-class lawyer and a good judge." Mr. Greenawalt argued the need for specialized scientific and engineering interest and understanding to enable a lawyer or judge to prepare or interpret patent specifications and decide the originality necessary for a valid invention. He proposed the special U. S. Court of Patent Appeals to also counteract the costly confusion and injustice now ruling where a patent may be declared valid in the courts of certain States and invalid by the courts of other States.

The production history of an inverted nine-spot injection pattern was studied with a porous plate model similar to Habermann's. Colored fluids were used so the boundary movements could be photographed. By varying the production rates of the side and corner producing wells, the optimum pattern sweep efficiency can be obtained. Results of the laboratory tests indicate that interpolation of the pattern sweep and conductivity ratio data will permit application of the data to predicting fluid injection operations with mobility ratios between 0.1 and 10 and production rate ratios between I and the optimum values. INTRODUCTION The inverted nine-spot injection pattern in Fig. 1 has some unique advantages over other regular injection patterns (five spot, line drive, etc.) used in secondary recovery operations. It has three producing wells for each injection well, while the five-spot and line-drive patterns require an equal number of injectors and producers. Futher-more, of the eight producing wells surrounding each injection well, four are of the "side well" type which lie nearer the injection well than the remaining four "corner wells". This allows the production rates of these two types of wells to be adjusted independently of each other to obtain better pattern sweep efficiency. This latter advantage may well be the reason why the nine-spot patterns have not been studied as extensively as the patterns containing only one type of injection or producing well. The pattern sweep efficiency of the inverted nine spot is affected almost as much by operating with different producing rates of the comer and side wells as by differing mobility ratios. Possibly because of this added operating parameter, published studies of nine-spot systems have been limited in their coverage of the pertinent variables.'-' The model studies reported here covered the mobility-ratio range normally found in waterflood operations, as well as the variation in well production rates necessary to achieve optimum pattern sweep efficiency. Conductivity ratios — a measure of the change in total flow at constant pressure difference — were obtained during each model run. A porous-plate model with miscible fluids representing the in-place and injected fluids was used in this study. This model technique is the same as that used in both X-ray shadowgraph" and visual techniques4 described in the literature. Using miscible fluids eliminates residual oil in the model, and the permeability to the injected fluid is the same as to the in-place fluid. Thus the mobility ratio in the model is given by the ratio of the viscosity of the displaced fluid to the viscosity of the injected fluid. Because of the non-linear nature of the viscosity vs composition curve for two miscible liquids, the mobility change across the boundary between the two fluids is reasonably sharp. This technique thus represents the displacement of a region of one fluid mobility by a region of possibly different mobility in an isotropic system under steady-state flow conditions. X-ray dif action techniques were used to investigate ordering and domain coalescence for the B2 (CsC1) superlattice in this alloy. Essentially complete disorder is obtainable by drastic quenching. isothertmal ordering occurs very rapidly at temperatures between 565° and 680°C, only a few seconds being required for development of substantial long-range order. A very fine antiphase dormain structure, found in samples annealed for short times, undergoes coalescence with further annealing. Domain "size" is found proportional to (t)1/2 . This Yate law can be derived by adapting the formalism of Hillert's analysis 01- metallurgical grain growth. For this Purpose the material is descvibed in terms of a "Swiss-cheese " structure, consisting of two multiply connected, mutually intertwined domain volumes. The observed activation enevgy for coalescence, 70 kcal per g-atom, agrees with an estit~lated value ,for volume diffusion in disordered rrzaterial. It is suggesled that the experimental value vejlects the substantially disordered environment of mobile vacancies located in the moving antiphase domain boundary. The alloy Fe-Co-2V is bcc below about 900'C and orders into a B2 (CsC1) superlattice below about 730c It has important applications in magnetic components, including many requiring extensive cold rolling.* example, Marcinkowski and Brown6 observed a re1atively small as-quenched domain size of about 250Å in B2 Fe3A1. Since there appear to be no published data on domain coalescence in B2 alloys, this process was studied in detail. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES A commercial high-purity alloy, nominally 49 Fe-49Co-2V, was obtained from the Arnold Engineering Co. in the form of cold-rolled sheet 0.004 in. thick. Samples were annealed for 1 hr at 800°C in dry H2 to produce disorder and quenched into iced brine. They were then annealed in a nitrate-nitrite salt bath for various times at temperatures between 525° and 625°C. Estimates of the LRO parameter S and the APD size D were made using established X-ray diffraction techniques. Superlattice peaks are best observed using CoKa radiation, for which the value of (fFe-fCo) is maximized. Peak-to-background intensity ratio was improved by filtering CoKß from the incident beam to eliminate sample fluorescence, and by using a pulse-height analyzer. The LRO parameter S was computed from the ratio of integrated intensities I 100/I 200- Owing presumably to systematic errors associated with the presence of crystallographic texture and X-ray extinction, only rough agreement was obtained between experimental and theoretical (absolute) intensity ratios. For this reason certain experimental refinements (e.g., use of balanced filters) were considered superfluous and were omitted. Emphasis was placed on maximizing intensity in order to reduce the time taken to accurately determine the contour of the very small (loo), peak. This was done by point counting 105 counts at appropriate intervals. Background intensity averaged about 1200 cps.

A potentiometric model technique is presented for determining the areal sweep efficiency of a five-spot well pattern, at and beyond breakthrough. A sharp interface between displaced and displacing fluids is assumed. Although the prototype svstem is referred to as a waterflood operation, obvious changes in the notation and computations will adapt the results to other displacement processes. The results of the study include the following. 1. Areal sweep efficiencies for a five-spot well pattern, at and beyond breakthrough, for mobility ratios (displacing to displaced fluid) of 4:1, 2:1, 1:1 and 1:4. 2. Extension of potentiometric analysis to the investigation of the areal sweep efficiency beyond breakthrough in a five-spot pattern by the application of conformal mapping and conductive-solid models. 3. The use of layers of conductive fabric in representing mobility ratio changes in potentiometric models. 4. The development of a probe mechanism for probing conductive solids. The results obtained by conductive-cloth models agree with earlier areal sweep efficiencies at breakthrough obtained by Aronofsky and Ramey 1 on the potentiometric analyzer using electrolytic-tank models. Results beyond breakthrough differ from those obtained by the X-Ray Shadowgraph technique. Data from this study show that, for mobility ratios greater than one, water cut rises rapidly as fluid is produced after breakthrough. However, for mobility ratios smaller than one, a large increase in area swept resulted with only a small increase in water cut. INTRODUCTION In calculating reservoir performance of waterflood-ing operations and other fluid-injection programs, it is necesssary to estimate the areal sweep efficiency * before and after injected-fluid breakthrough into production wells. Influence of mobility ratio on oil-production history, before and after breakthrough for a five-spot well pattern, has been studied by X-Ray Shadowgraph techniques 2-5 and by gelatin models.6 In none of these investigations was the transition zone controlled experimentally. Steady-state anaiog techniques assume that a vertical and discrete interface exists between the displacing and displaced phase. Thus, when using a potentiometric analysis, it is assumed that no transition zone exists. To determine the areal sweep efficiency beyond breakthrough for a five-spot well pattern using the potentiometric analyzer, four principal problems had to be resolved. These were the following. 1. The laborious method of representing changes in mobility ratio in electrolytic tanks by means of contoured wooden blocks. 2. Vapcrization of the electrolyte solution during the study causing concentration changes and, thereby, variable conductivity. 3. The scale-limitation problem 7 that is accentuated by abrupt eiectrolyte depth changes. 4. A wellbore geometry problem. EXPERIhlENTAL EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES CONDUCTIVE-SOLID MODEL The theory, equipment and procedural techniques of the electrolytic-tank potentiometric model have been treaced excellently by Lee8 and by Muskat.9 By the use of a conductive solid to represent the fluid conductivity of the porous media, the need for contouring wooden blocks to represent mobility ratio was eliminated. It was found that a carbon-black coated fabric, Uskon D-16,** could be employed as a fairly uniform conductive media. T SEEMS almost sheer presumption to attempt' to discuss Russia in its present chaotic political and economic condition, and were it not that at least two certain absolute factors are continuously at work, it would be impossible to' even approach the subject with any degree of intelligence. These are the inborn love of peace of the people and the national character of the cooperative movement. The love of peace inborn in the soul of every Russian, the desire to be left alone and to- live his life among his home village surroundings, is probably one of the two greatest factors that will make the continuance of the present conditions of civil war impossible. One army or the other may sweep up and down the country. but the Russian peasant will: remain in his own village if not literally darken out. This love of peace is evidenced by the fact that there is no country where personal safety is greater than in Russia in normal times. I have traveled in many isolated parts, carrying considerable sums of money and persolial equipment that; in itself, would be a fortune to any peasant, and have never even encountered a condition in which the most wildly imaginative person looking for adventure, 01: trouble, could muster up even a suspicion of fear. This statement applies also to Southern Siberia and Northern Turkestan, which are inhabitated by the nomadic tribes of Khirghese origin.

THE object of this paper is to present a theory of the formation of fissures which seems to be supported by all available data. The investigation is, in the main, an exact one, and irregularities of the rock-structure are generalized. From the conclusions drawn a general classification of fissures is made, and this should be of practical use in the comparison of mineral deposits. The theory also throws some light on the equilibrium of the earth's crust and the depth of action of surface-waters. Incidentally, additions are made to the theory of earthquake-slips. Former Theory. It has been previously pointed out that the '"jointing" of homogeneous rocks occurs in two sets of planes, at right angles to one another, and making angles of 45° with the directions of greatest and least principal stress.' The theory by which this fact is explained does not, however, account for fissures and faults, because normal faults are usually more vertically, and reverse faults more horizontally, inclined than 45°. The "jointing law" is based on the following axiom: "In a homogeneous mass under pressure, rupture must take place on the lines of maximum tangential stress." 2 This law applies, with fair approximation, to the tests on jointing which can be made in the laboratory, and as nearly as can be expected to the natural jointing-planes in rock-masses, where the stresses are not very great; but it entirely fails to account for fissure-fractures.

IN MOST diamond core drilling the primary objective is the recovery of samples to be used for chemical analysis, physical tests, or visual inspection. Unless these samples are reliable and the information systematically recorded, the time and money spent in securing them are largely wasted. A properly taken diamond-drill sample is similar to a properly moiled channel sample but more accurate. No channel sample can be moiled in as even a groove as the smooth cylinder of material normally removed in diamond drilling. More important still, sampling by the diamond drill practically eliminates that personal equation which Jora1emon4 reference numbers apply to publications listed in the bibliography at the end of this article) has aptly termed "the almost magnetic attraction of the most conscientious hand toward rich pieces of ore."
