RETURNS already received from a current survey of the enrolment of students in the mineral technology schools indicate a degree of activity and prosperity in those schools never before equalled. The returns are as yet too meager for accurate analysis, but those at hand point LO considerable increase in the metallurgical and petroleum engineering groups, and indicate that the total of 5011 two years ago in the United States schools will be substantially increased. Generally speaking, the enrolment is not only maximum in quantity but optimum in quality. Better income has sent the boys back to school, but the improved employment conditions have somewhat reduced the number of graduate students. Laboratories are commonly filled to capacity, in some instances overcrowded. Increased enrolment of foreign students from both Canada and South America is noticeable.

DURING the war the mineral industry, and metal mining in particular, extended itself more than any other to attain the limit of its productive capacity. Likewise, probably no other industry went quite so far toward jeop¬ardizing its own economic future through depletion of material reserves. Once we looked to Europe for most of the manufactured goods we needed. Our own limited mineral requirements were easily supplied from mines near the Eastern seaboard. With expansion and industrialization, our mineral needs increased in proportion, and the centers of mining activity moved westward to Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the Tri-State district, where seemingly inexhaustible high-grade deposits of iron, copper, lead, and zinc ores were opened and rapidly developed.

The ultimate resistance against a rigid cylinder which is moved laterally in a cohesionless soil is a function of the geometry of the cylinder and the properties of the soil. An approximate method is developed for computing this resistance and is tested against results of laboratory experiments. Satisfactory agreement between the method and experiment was obtained. Not only was the ultimate resistance against the cylinder measured, but measurements were made of the shape of the rupture surfaces. These measurements should allow the development of a more rigorous computation procedure. INTRODUCTION A critical aspect in the design of offshore drilling platforms is assuring the stability of the platform during a hurricane. The large horizontal loads from waves and wind make a severe loading condition. Piles are generally employed as the foundation since they can be effective in resisting both horizontal and vertical loads. Spuds are sometimes used with a mat foundation, where the spuds are designed principally to resist horizontal loads and the mat designed principally to resist vertical loads. The research reported in this paper is related to one aspect of the problem of laterally loaded piles or spuds in sand. The complete solution to the problem of the laterally loaded pile in sand would require the prediction of soil resistance against the pile as a function of pile deflection; only the ultimate resistance against short piles is considered in this paper. A considerable amount of additional research will be necessary in order to obtain a complete solution to the problem of the laterally loaded pile in sand; however, the work reported here should be useful as a guide in the performance of some of the additional research. ULTIMATE LATERAL RESISTANCE AGAINST A LONG FALL IN SAND To aid in the understanding of the theory which is developed for a cylinder, the theory for earth pressure against a wall is reviewed. In Fig. l(a), a long wall of height H is shown embedded in soil. Soil resistance will develop as the wall is deflected, and the soil resistance will increase with deflection until some limiting value is reached. In this discussion, and those following, it is assumed that all points on the wall deflect equal amounts. A possible shape of the real curve which relates soil resistance to deflection is shown by the dashed line in Fig. l(b); however, as a means of simplifying the discussion, an idealized curve (shown by the unbroken lines) is drawn. If such a wall as this were furnishing the horizontal support for an offshore structure, the dashed curve in Fig. 1 would be the information needed in performing a foundation analysis, with the idealized curve possibly being an acceptable substitute. The proportional limit of iron crystals in torsion is governed by the resolved shear stress in the most highly stressed slip systems, averaged around the specimen circumference, and does not obey a critical resolved shear stress law. Crystals of most orientations exhibit a stage of easy plastic deformation, akin to easy glide in tensile or shear specimens. Transient deformation, similar to that which occurs in single crystals of other materials, is also observed. THE torsional deformation of single crystals of magnesium (hcp) and aluminum (fcc) has been described recently by Choi et al.,&apos; especially with respect to the criterion for the orientation dependence of the onset of plastic flow in these materials. The purpose of this paper is to present results of torsion tests of iron single crystals and thus to extend this yield criterion to a bcc metal. In addition to considering the variation of proportional limit with crystal orientation, this paper also briefly treats work hardening, transient deformation, and the mechanism of plastic flow in iron. The effects of the method of surface polishing and the chemical purity of the iron have been investigated. STRESS DISTRIBUTION It is convenient to express the stress at any point of a cylindrical crystal stressed in torsion in terms of t0, which is the shear stress acting at the surface on a plane normal to the axis of the cylinder and in a direction tangential to the cylinder. This stress is given by To = 2T/pr3 [1] where T is the applied torque and r the specimen radius. The shear stress t, resolved in any chosen slip system is given in terms of 7, by1 Ts/TO = sin 0, cos d sin (0, -) + cos , sin d sin d - ) [2] where 0 and d are the angles between the specimen axis and the slip plane normal and slip direction, respectively; h is the angular circumferential position on the specimen at which t, is being determined, measured from an arbitrary reference plane which includes the axis;o and d are the angular coordinates of the projections of the slip plane normal and slip direction on a transverse section with respect to this same reference plane. Slip in iron occurs in a <1ll> direction on the {ll0}, (1121, and (123) planes, which together comprise 48 slip systems. A complete evaluation of the stress distribution in an iron crystal stressed in torsion would therefore require a calculation of Ts/T0 as a function of for 48 different slip systems. Fortunately Gough,&apos;who studied the behavior of iron crystals in alternating torsion, was able to simplify this problem considerably. He showed that it was sufficient to consider a kind of average slip plane for each slip direction, namely the mathematical plane of maximum resolved shear stress containing the slip direction considered. This simplifying approximation is possible because, for each slip direction, the active slip plane or planes lie very near this mathematical plane of maximum shear stress. Vogel and rick&apos; have critically reviewed the early work of Taylor and Elam,13 Taylor,14 and Fahrenhorst and schmid8 from which the identification of the above crystallographic planes as slip planes in the bcc lattice largely stems. While their criticism is clearly justified, their own results do little to clarify the issue. The role of cross slip (screw dislocations changing glide planes) is evidently so important in this case, as Read3 has suggested, that methods for deducing slip systems from observations of gross slip traces are inadequate, such traces commonly arising from complex dislocation motion. Thus the treatment given here involving the plane of maximum resolved shear stress seems a logical simplification especially in view of Gough&apos;s2 study of a iron. There is, however, an assumption built into the subsequent treatment the comparative validity of which is difficult to assess, namely, that slip in all slip systems in iron may be characterized by a common critical resolved shear stress. The shear stress 7, resolved in a slip direction defined by d andd, and on the plane of maximum shear stress containing this direction, is found by first maximizing 7s/70 with respect to either Oo or 4,. A method is presented for calculating approximate injection rates in secondary recovery operations. The method can be applied to cases of unequal fluid mobilities, irregular well patterns and boundary patterns. The steady-state pressure distributions for the four flood patterns reported by Muskat and for five additional patterns reveal that most of the difference in pressure between the injection and producing wells occurs in regions around the wells which can adequately be described as regions of radial flow. This leads to a method of calculating injectivity by approximating the flood pattern with radial flow elements (or a combination of radial- and linear-flow elements for some patterns such as the direct line drive). Irregular and boundary patterns can also be approximated by radial and linear elements. Each of these elements can be described by radial-and linear-flow equations and the results combined as series flow resistances to give an approximate equation for the initial injection rate. The mobility ratio does not affect the initial rate; therefore, if the well pattern is one of those regular patterns for which theoretical rate equations have been derived for unity mobility ratio, the approximate initial rate equation can be improved by adjusting it to match the theoretical equation. The available theoretical rate equations are listed, including five new cases. As the flood progresses, the injectivity changes because in general the flood front will divide the pattern into areas of different fluid mobilities. Simple shapes can be assumed for the flood front so that both areas can be divided into radial- and linear-flow elements. Radial- and linear-flow equations are applied to these elements to account for the change in flow resistance behind the front. To calculate injection rates after breakthrough, it is necessary to know the sweep efficiency at breakthrough. Areal sweep data are available in the literature for a number of patterns, and sufficiently accurate breakthrough sweep efficiency can be estimated from these data if it is not otherwise available. Again, simple shapes for the flood front can be assumed after breakthrough, and injection rates can be calculated for the remainder of the flood. When areal sweep data are available, these data can be used to cbeck. the calculated injection rates after breakthrough. Injection rates calculated by this approximate method compare favorably with available model data. INTRODUCTION When the fluid mobilities in the swept and un swept regions are equal, the injectivity will not change as the flood front advances; and for regular patterns it can be calculated by mathematical formu1as.l When the fluid mobilities in the swept and unswept regions are not equal, the injectivity will increase or decrease as the flood front advances. In this case, the injectivity has not been calculated by analytical means for any practical well pattern; and, furthermore, scale model and analog4,6 results have been published only for the five-spot pattern. The main object of this paper is to present an approximace method for calculating injectivity for the case of unequal mobilities. The method can be applied to regular, irregular and boundary patterns. Before the approximate method is discussed, the analytical formulas for equal mobilities will be summarized, and the analytical solution for radial flow with unequal mobilities will be used to show how the injectivity changes as the flood progresses. THOUGH the largest volume use of natural gas has been, is. and in all probability will continue to be as a fuel for domestic and industrial heating, it has various market outlets, both as a fuel and as a raw material for the chemical industry. Natural gas is a preferred type of fuel where ease of control, fuel uniformity, and freedom from ash are of primary importance. Other industrially important uses are as a source of carbon black and as a fuel in various low-cost heating operations. Many other uses are of varying importance and new potential uses are continually being uncovered, some being of economic importance to the gas indus¬try as a whole, but most of them involve such small volumes of gas that they are only of passing interest. Since various products extracted from natural gas and recovered as by-products from petroleum refining, such as liquefied petroleum gas and fuel oil, are being utilized in many industrial and domestic heating applications, some consideration will have to be given such materials in order to present a reasonably complete story of the importance of natural gas. Some of these materials may prove to be transient competitors and will not be available when more profitable uses are found for them. Meanwhile, however, the potential volumes of such materials available, the current volumes being marketed, and the nature of the utilization are considered as constituting an essential part of the over-all fuel picture.

EVERYONE enjoyed the coal meeting and found it profitable. At least your correspondent did, and those to whom he talked. Close to a hundred were there. The Coronado proved an excellent headquarters hotel, though it is two miles or more from the business district of St. Louis; its Crystal Room was suitable for the technical sessions; its Lounge adequate for registration and informal chats; its Club Caprice made an artistic setting for the informal banquet; and its Coal Hole in the basement presumably served other needs-unfortunately we passed up an invitation to find out, and never got another. To be sure, the first day of the meeting (Monday, Oct. 28) was a drizzly one, but that only served to keep people inside where they belonged. Believe it or not, the first technical session was only five minutes late in getting tinder way, with H. N. Eavenson&apos;s words of welcome. M. M. Leighton then took over the conduct of the meeting, and invited Eugene McAuliffe to read his paper on how much coal the railroads are likely to use in the future. E. G. Bailey then presented some written discussion; among other things he wondered about the success of stokers on locomotives, and whether or not the burning of coal in locomotives could not he made a cleaner operation. Mr. McAuliffe pointed out that railroads are built to haul coal rather than to burn it. Maximum firebox efficiency is often subordinated to the traffic situation. Powdered-coal firing has not been a success because of limited firebox space. Stokers have resulted in economies indirectly, because large locomotives cannot he hand-fired and stokers thus make them possible. Nowadays it is not so important to do away with smoke, cinders, and soot, because most trains are sealed up and air-conditioned.

IN most human endeavors a knowledge of the terrain is essential to the effective carrying out of projects, but no line of work is more dependent on maps than theoretical and applied geology. Maps of a kind do exist for all of the area of the United States, but most of them are crude affairs and of little use in engineering, planning, and scientific research. Topographic mapping in the United States was initiated on a national scale by the U. S. Geological Survey and the organizations that were merged in its creation to make base maps for geologists. Their work could not be effectively done then and cannot be effectively done now without maps that accurately delineate the earth&apos;s surface. The distribution of the rock masses that contain valuable mineral bodies, or that by their intrusion brought them into existence, is the first step in a study of the mineral resources of the nation. This work requires three-dimensional maps, that is, topographic maps on which the land forms are shown by contours.

Introduction. OF the treatment of the slime-pulp of gold- and silver-ores by cyanidation, agitation is an essential part. When prepared for treatment, this pulp, consisting of ore reduced to such fineness that approximately 80 per cent. of it will pass through a 200-mesh screen, is mixed with a certain proportion of water, carrying in solution the quantity of cyanide (KCN) and other chemicals required. The water-constituent of the pulp thus prepared usually ranges from 1 to 2 parts by weight to 1 of the dry ore. Thus constituted&apos;, the pulp is charged into treatment-tanks, the shape and capacity of which vary, according to the quantity of pulp to be treated daily and the method of agitation to be employed. Tanks have no other function in a cyanide-plant than that of being economical and convenient containers or receptacles for holding the pulp, solution, or water used in the operations. It is by agitation that the solids in the pulp charged into the tanks are kept in suspension in, and mixed with, the solution in the proper proportions required for the treatment. If the proper mixture of solution to solids be determined to be 2 to 1 by weight (which is, approximately, 5 to 1 by volume), this proportion should be maintained in every part of the charge ; -that is, each solid particle of the pulp, whether it be of 180- or 400-mesh size, should, be surrounded by five times its own volume of solution throughout the whole period of treatment. The reason is, that the amount of chemicals ascertained to be necessary for dissolving the gold and silver contained in the solids, is held in uniform solution in the water-constituent of the pulp, and, therefore, the determined proportions of solution and solids must be maintained at all times during treat-

IN THE COURSE of its investigations directed toward providing strategic metals from domestic sources and toward utilizing power from Federal power projects in West, the Bureau of Mines concluded some years ago that the development of a method for producing electrolytic manganese might well be an important step towards both goals. Accordingly, laboratory investigations were undertaken in 1935. Further studied on a relatively large laboratory scale indicated that electrolytic manganese could be made from domestic ores at a cost not out of line with other nonferrous metals. On the basis of these results, the Electro Manganese Corp. Operating under U.S. Patent 2,119,560 issued to S, M, Shelton and assigned to the Secretary of the Interior for administration, undertook commercial production of electrolytic manganese at Knoxville, Tenn, This company has brought the process through the pilot-plant stage successfully, and is now regularly producing approximately one ton a day.

A new recovery process for producing oil under both secondary and tertiary conditions utilizes the unique properties of micellar solutions (also known as microemulsions, swollen micelles, and soluble oils). These solutions, which displace 100 percent of the oil in the reservoir contacted, can be driven through the reservoir with water and are stable in the presence of reservoir water and rock. Basic components of micellar solutions are surfactant, hydrocarbon and water. They may also contain small amounts of electrolytes and co surfactants such as a1cohol.r. The specific reservoir application dictates the type and concentration of each component. A salient feature of [he process is the capability for mobility control. Micellar solution slug mobility, by way of viscosity control, is made equal to or less than the combined oil and water mobility. Mobility control continues with a mobility buffer that prevents drive water from contacting the micellar solution. Laboratory and field flooding have proven that the process is technically feasible and that surfactant losses by adsorption on porous media are small. Introduction projects are under way to recover the maximum amount of oil under the most favorable economic conditions.&apos; : New techniques are being developed to increase oil recovery,3" Polymer solutions are becoming an important means of controlling mobility in a waterflood. Thermal methods such as in-situ combustion and steam injection are being used in reservoirs containing highly viscous crudes. Surfactant flooding is receiving attention as a method of reducing interfacial tension to increase recovery.*&apos;" Exotic recovery processes have been considered primarily for &apos; perations. Economics are unfavorable in most cases for tertiary recovery. studies at the Denver Research Center of the Marathon oil CO. have led to a new oil recovery method.* Micellar solutions (sometimes called microemulsions, swollen micelles, and soluble oils) are used to recover oil by miscible-type waterflooding. Basically, these solutions contain surfactant, hydrocarbon, and water. The method can be used in either secondary or tertiary operations. First, thc concept of thc process is considered in terms of the requirements for an effective miscible waterflood ing operation. Next, micellar solution properties are described including structure, composition, and phase behavior with reservoir fluids. Fluid characteristics are then considered as related to mobility control, and, finally, laboratory and field results are presented to illustrate the efficiency of the process. Concept of the Process Unit displacement efficiency and conformance determine the effectiveness of any oil recovery mechanism. In theory, a miscible waterflood should be capable of a 100-percent unit displacement efficiency with a correspondingly high conformance. Requirements for the slug of a miscible waterflood include (1) 100-percent displacement of oil in the reservoir contacted, (2) controllable mobility, (3) the capability of being driven through the reservoir with water, (4) a low unit cost to enhance economics, and (5) the ability to remain stable in the presence of reservoir water and rock. Micellar solutions satisfy requirements for the slug of a miscible waterflood process. Our discovery that these solutions acted as though they were miscible by displacing all fluids in the reservoir and by being displaced by water solved the miscibility problem. Adequate mobility control is possible by variations in solution viscosity through compositional changes. Economic requirements are met since micellar solution costs below $6/bbl appear possible, Mi cellar solutions stabilize surfactant in the presence of reservoir rock and water, thus reducing the importance of the problem of surfactant loss by adsorption. Fig. 1 illustrates schematically how these solutions are used. Operations start with injection of a micellar solution slug that serves as the oil displacing agent. Next, a mobility buffer of either a water-external emulsion or water solution containing polymer (thickened water) is injected to protect the slug from water invasion. Finally, drive water (water used in a regular waterflood) is injected to propel the slug and mobility buffer through the reservoir. Reservoir oil and water are displaced ahead of the slug, and a stabilized oil and water bank develops as shown in Fig. 1. Stabilized bank saturations are independent of original oil and water saturations. This means that, for a particular type of reservoir, the displacement mechanism is the same under secondary and tertiary recovery conditions. Oil is produced first in a secondary operation. For tertiary conditions, water is produced first. Movement of the slug through the reservoir is stabilized by the mobility buffer. IN the four mills of the Cerro de Pasco Copper Corp. in Peru, some 3000 tons of complex sulphide ores are treated daily, with four kinds of concentrates produced: copper, lead, zinc, and pyrite, each containing values in silver, gold, bismuth, and some other metals. Copper occurs in the various ores as chalcopyrite, enargite, tetrahedrite, tenantite, bournonite, and chalcocite; lead as galena; and zinc as sphalerite and marmatite. Small amounts of silver and tungsten minerals are also present. The gangue consist mainly of shale, quartzite, calcite, rhodochrosite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. In general the values are freed with a relatively coarse grind, about 70 prr cent minus 200 mesh being the finest to which the pulps are ground. In Morococha and Casapalca however. sphalerite particles much finer than this contain inclusions of chalcopyrit r. At Cerro de Pasco the silver and gold are present in all sizes of the ground pyrite.

Resistant Tape A new oil-resistant tape for rapid insulation build-up on splices in large power cables has been announced by Minnesota Mining & Mfg. Co. Designated Scotch brand electrical tape No. 25 is made of synthetic rubber providing greater dielectric strength and resistance to high temperatures. The chemical-resistant qualities of the tape make it suitable for use in oil drilling, mining and underground [ ] cable operations, while the 40-mil thickness and extreme stretch (1500 pct breaking point) make possible smooth insulation wraps on irregular surfaces. Dielectric strength is 15,000 v and 10,000 v at 500 pct elongation. It has an electrolytic corrosion factor of 1.0 and an insulation resistance of 100,000 megohms. Circle No. 1 Hydra-Lift The Pitman Mfg. Co. announces that is now has in production a new model of the Pitman hydra-lift, recently-developed crane with hydraulically-powered boom that can be mounted on the frame of any truck, 1 ½ tons or larger. According to the manufacturer, the new model hydralift model B features a variety of improvements over the original production model, introduced late in 1950. Changes incorporated in the new model, according to officials, not only have resulted in improved crane, but also have given the unit a new profile which distinguishes it sharply from the original model. The two chief improvements in the new model are: a big increase in the unit&apos;s safety margin and the fact that it is now shipped almost completely preassembled, cutting the time and cost of installation. Rated capacities of the hydra-lift are based on the tipping factor of a 1 1/2 ton truck, with outriggers down, and thus have not been increased. Circle No. 2

A RESIDENCE of 14 years in the Republic of Colombia, spent in almost continuous traveling and prospecting-trips, has given me an intimate knowledge of the resources of that wonderful country. The man who best knows Colombia is unquestionably General Rafael Reyes, President of the Republic for the past three years, and with seven years more to serve in his present term. Such is the strength of his personality and the wisdom of his policies that his term of office will no doubt endure as long as he is willing to serve. The vastly improved economic situation and the brilliant outlook for Colombia are so directly due to the influence of President Reyes that a few lines concerning him. will not be amiss, if they serve towards a better understanding of his personality. Born of a distinguished ancestry in the mountains of Boyaca, he is now 57 years old, just the age of his friend Porfirio Diaz when be began the work which has placed Mexico in the rank of great modern nations. It was Reyes who came to Washington to protest against the action of the government of the United States of America in reference to the establishment of the Republic of Panama, and, without entering into a discussion of this affair, it can be fairly said that there was not an American in Colombia whose feelings of justice were. not outraged at the government action and subsequent refusal to submit the matter to the impartial judgment of the&apos; Hague. President Reyes is an accomplished linguist, speaking English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian. He has a remarkably. powerful voice, which can readily be heard by a large assemblage. His height is about 6 ft., and his weight exceeds 200 lb. He has clear gray eyes. Reyes was the leader of those who favored the approval of

Introduction This surprisingly little-known group of minerals, the nonmetallics, so-called for their lack of metallic luster, is the largest group of the mineral kingdom, and cinstitutes perhaps 75 percent of all mineral species. For the most part, these minerals are compounds of the common acids, oxides, hydroxides, and two elements, carbon and sulfur. The list of the non- metallic minerals, therefore, is very long. It includes the borates, carbonates, chlorides, fluorides, nitrates, phosphates, silicates, sulfates, and less commonly, arsenates, chromates, molybdates, suliides, tungstates, and vanadates, the latter groups, and many of the oxides, being sought principally for their metal content. Those nonmetallics used commercially are generally called the industrial minerals, although in addition this term also includes a considerable group of rocks. The list of industrial minerals and rocks is continually growing as new uses are found, and it now numbers over 300 commodities. The industrial minerals industry has developed since about 1920. There- fore, the development has been fast, and it has been more or less parallel with the development of the art of minerals beneficiation. General Discussion of the Group This group is so heterogeneous that it has defied logical, or widely accepted, classification, whether by origin, composition, or end use, and perhaps for this reason the industrial minerals generally have received short shrift in both teaching and research. Except for those involved with asbestos, cement, fertilizers, gypsum, salt, sand and gravel, few large companies have deigned to enter the field, and consequently most industrial minerals have been developed for the most part by the small operators or entrepreneurs. Yet surprisingly, except for one war year, the nonmetallics have always surpassed the metals in value and tonnage (Fig. 1). One main characteristic that most of the nonmetallics have in common is direct sensitivity to labor and transportation. In other words they are characterized by large bulk and low-unit value, and hence have what might be termed a "place value".

A Discussion of the Paper by Mr. H. A. Guess, read at the Atlantic City meeting, February, 1904. MR. JOSEPH P. GAZZAM, Germiston, Transvaal, So. Africa (communication to the Secretary*) :-About fourteen years ago, in southeastern Missouri, I used a method for the wet determination of lead which closely resembles the modified sulphate-chromate method described by Mr. Guess. The principal difference, however, is, that after dissolving the lead chromate in hydrochloric acid, the chromic acid is determined by means of a standard solution of ferrous sulphate. The method, which I believe is still in use in southeastern Missouri, was found to be convenient and accurate for the determination of lead in the ores and various products of the mills and furnaces in that district, but it was never used for complex ores. A number of determinations of lead in mill-tailings were made in the year 1891; a few of these results are given in Table I.
