A LTHOUGH the efficiency of coal utilization has A improved steadily since the turn of the century as a result of continued research and development, little of this increase in efficiency can be credited to improvements in the single retort stoker. There are still numerous problems connected with the burning of coal on this type of unit, the solution of which would be a stimulus to coal and stoker sales and a boon to the user. Among the more critical of these problems is that of burning slack bituminous coal of strong caking tendency and containing large percentages of fine material. With the increased trend toward mechanical mining, it may be expected that in the future an even larger percentage of the coal available for use on this class of stokers will contain higher percentages of the fine sizes, thus aggravating an already serious problem. During the war, the problem of efficient and economic burning of available coals on the single retort industrial stoker, particularly the class 4 stokers (301 to 1200 lb per hr), became quite critical in many localities. In addition to the inherent problems associated with the use of this class stoker, the coals available were frequently not those best suited for use on this equipment and the manpower shortage made it difficult as well as expensive for the consumer to provide the labor necessary to keep the iires in reasonably satisfactory condition. Although exact figures on the number of class 4 stokers are not available, the yearly tonnages of coal consumed are of considerable consequence and have been estimated* at between 15 and 20 million the stoker research staff of the Mineral Industries Experiment Station of The Pennsylvania State College was requested to study the performance of the single retort industrial stoker and to undertake a program of research on the more efficient burning of bituminous coal on this class of unit. Various aspects of overall problem have been investigated since the inception of this program in 1942, only one of which is here reported. General Considerations There are numerous factors which appear directly or indirectly to affect the overall performance of bituminous coal underfeed stokers, such as the caking or matting properties of the coal, the contact relationships between coal and air, the ash fusion characteristics, the burning rate, and the design of the stoker and furnace in which the coal is burned. THE general subject of accurate pyrometry, its great development in recent years, and the importance of its application in arts and manufactures is so ably treated in other papers that this paper will bee confined to a resume of some research work on certain temperature effects in carbon and other steels, some of which appear to, be new. The results of these researches are embodied in several papers presented to' various scientific societies during the last few years, most of them under the general title of Spontaneous Generation of Heat in Recently Hardened Steel.1 Several years ago, when studying the behavior, tinder certain conditions, of specimens of hardened tool steel, I observed that they all spontaneously generated a small quantity of heat, the rate of generation diminishing from day to day for several weeks before generation became imperceptible in the sensitive calorimeter used. In each case the steel had been hardened only a few days prior to its use. It seemed highly probable that the generation of heat was associated with some sort of "seasoning" or incipient annealing process, perhaps accompanied by slight changes of volume, and that it would be most rapid immediately after hardening. I subsequently investigated this curious phenomenon more fully. Twelve ½ in. round bars of tool steel, 5 in. long and with machined surfaces, were hardened by heating to high cherry red in a reducing atmosphere of a gas furnace and quenched in cold water. The bars then had a thin strongly adhering coating of black oxide. They were next stirred in a large quantity of water at room temperature, to acquire that temperature, wiped dry, and oiled with heavy, neutral mineral oil to prevent generation of heat by further surface oxidation, wiped free of excess of oil and placed in the copper cylinder of a heat-insulated box.

Substantial priming was a considered necessity for proper initiation of ammonium nitrate-fuel oil mixes as ANFO began to carve its niche in the mining industry in the latter fifties. Heavy priming accompanied the introduction of prills and oil to many blasting operations, large charges of high explosives were commonly used at the bottom, top and frequent intervals throughout the column. As the quality of ammonium nitrate improved and operators became more experienced, primer costs began to diminish. Increased experimentation continued with reduced primer costs a main objective. Cast primers were introduced and became accepted as an excellent companion for ANFO. Although the trend toward larger diameter boreholes became increasingly popular, emphasis on lower and lower priming costs continued. A primer was simply required to produce any type of initiation within the ANFO column to be considered adequate. Suddenly ANFO priming had digressed from excessive to marginal. Early experimental data from test site and laboratory indicated that ANFO had a tendency to react inefficiently in the initiation region of the column unless substantially primed. This was evidenced by the presence of unstable reaction rates detected with newly developed detonation velocity measuring equipment. These low order or "transient" velocities were believed to originate because of inadequate primer strength or a primer diameter to column diameter mismatch. However, the nature of this experimental work was generally confined to small diameter column charges detonated in iron pipe simulated bore-holes. It was questionable whether the smaller scale laboratory data was applicable to large 12 1/4 and 15-in. boreholes.

IN the southern field of the anthracite region of Pennsylvania, many of the coal seams dip at angles of 40° to 50° from the horizontal. For transportation purposes, "tunnels" are driven across the coal measures and, occasionally, "rock gangways," beside the seams and parallel with them. The use of gangways driven in country rock appears to be increas-ing, as they avoid the maintenance' of long gangways in coal, which eventually are driven to the colliery boundaries, and permit mining from a number of intermediate blocks without interference. The rock consists of slates or sandstones of moderate hardness, which may range into very hard, highly siliceous, fine-grained conglomerates. In this distinctly bedded formation,' the direction of the heading, whether parallel with or across the structure, makes it necessary to distribute the drill holes in a different pattern to break the ground, but does not change loading conditions. In 1932, practically all the mucking was done by hand, and it was the established custom to use four men on two drills for drilling and breaking the ground, and five for loading it, out. A driver and mule was needed in addition, to assemble the rock cars at a siding or branching track in the rear, pending their final disposal. This might occupy the driver's whole time, or if the length of haul were short, he might be able to do other useful work. It was thought possible in 1932 to reduce the cost of driving such headings in rock by mechanical loading, and to investigate this subject a scraper loader was used in a section of tunnel then being driven. Opera-tions while driving 195 ft. of this tunnel using a scraper loader were care-fully observed. Time studies were made of the loading, and records made of the routine of breaking ground, but not in such detail. Tunnels or gangways in the colliery are 7 ft. high above the rails, by 10 ft. wide, which requires a minimum of 8 ft. in height, broken to allow for rails and ties. This cross section is of sufficient size to permit the use of any one of several types of power loaders, but for this demonstration if was found most convenient to use a scraper loader.

A preceding paragraph treats of the irregular manner in which ore deposits occur and the complex factors that control their distribution; the occurrence of metals in oreshoots in individual deposits is equally irregular, and the factors that control such segregation are equally complex. While the dimen¬sions of oreshoots in individual deposits may not be foretold with any degree of accuracy, the occurrence of ore in shoots is not accidental, but is controlled by laws some of which are understood. Any one familiar with permutations and combina¬tions who stops to consider the variety of factors that control ore deposition, and their varying relative importance, will admit that the science of economic geology must advance greatly before the occurrence of oreshoots may be predicted accurately in advance of exploration. The segregation of minerals in any oreshoot must be referred to some condition, or combination of conditions, local to the oreshoot as compared with the remainder of the deposit of low¬grade or barren minerals. Among the localizing factors that have been recognized are, in filled fissures, the amount and distribution of open spaces available for ore deposition, and in replacement deposits, the degree of brecciation giving access to the replacing solutions; the intersection of veins with other veins, dikes, sheeted zones, or porous strata; the impounding of solutions by impervious strata; and the differing precipitative influences of enclosing rocks. A large proportion of important and well ¬defined oreshoots, especially in deposits of deep-seated origin, are not assignable to any of these factors. Natural gas influences the movement of oil through reservoir rock by affecting the physical properties of the oil and the pressure within the reservoir. The presence of gas bubbles changes the laws of flow and the distribution of forces. The problem of flow of oil and gas through a porous rock is complex, and most authors, in order to analyze their problems, have found it necessary to make or accept certain generalized assumptions. Some of these assumptions, particularly the ones dealing with capillary phenomena and moleculnr forces, have not received sufficient attention and by lack of understanding have often been misinterpreted. Herold1 has called attention to the resistance offered by gas bubbles in capillary spaces and has drawn some interesting conclusions with regard to the action of natural gas in a reservoir rock. He has duplicated an experiment of the French physicist Jamin, has interpreted his findings in terms of molar mechanics, and, from experimental observations, has made a number of assumptions which he later applies in discussing problems of natural flow and recovery of oil. The Jamin action is an assumption because it lacks a physical proof and has never been determined quantitatively. Tickel12 attempts to develop a formula expressing the work performed by a distorted bubble. H. A. Wilson, in the recent publication of the American Petroleum Institute on the function of natural gas, discusses the phenomenon in terms of classical physics. Both contributions are incomplete and offer no experimental data. This paper includes a study of the static condition of equilibrium of gas and liquid bubbles confined to capillary spaces. This paper gives the author's personal idea of the general viewpoint of the world's largest mica consumer, the U. S. Army, toward the supply, uses, and conservation of mica. However, to cover so broad a subject in a brief paper will require the dismissal of many phases with little or no mention. For example, it will be necessary to omit further reference to phlogopite or amber mica, even though amber block and splittings for certain spark plugs and commutator segments present some supply problems. This paper will deal entirely with muscovite, or white mica. Muscovite Mica Muscovite mica is available commercially in four general forms; namely, as block mica, as splittings, as washer punch, and as scrap mica.1 No strategic importance is attached to washer punch and scrap mica, even though scrap has found some use in military construction and in electrical ceramics. The use of washer punch as such has fallen off with the non-manufacture of household electrical appliances. Some qualities of block mica are also of little or no interest, but other qualities of block mica and all splittings are considered of vital importance. Army equipment requires large amounts of muscovite mica splittings in the form of built-up mica commutator segments and coil insulation in motors and generators. Other military items using significant amounts of muscovite splittings are transformers, switchboards, and blasting apparatus. Flexible mica tape, made from bookform or loose-dusted splittings cemented to paper, linen, glass cloth, and other backing, is widely used in coil insulation in heavy electrical equipment and in aircraft generators. All muscovite mica splittings come from India, principally because of the enormous amount of hand labor required in their preparation. In this emergency, the need for them was anticipated and large industry and government stocks were on hand, while shipments have continued to come by sea in spite of wartime hazards. With the possible exception of certain bookform splittings, no trouble is anticipated in supply. Accordingly, the remainder of this paper is devoted to block (or sheet) muscovite mica, including condenser film that is split from block. The Mica Problem Block muscovite mica is commercially classified into the following general qualitie3, beginning with the best quality: 1. Clear and Slightly Stained (C & SS). 2. Fair stained (FS). 3. Good stained (GS). 4. stained (s). 5. Heavy Stained (HS). 6. Black spotted. The mining district of Sao Fidelis, in the northern part of the State of Rio de Janeiro, is situated on the Paraiba River, where it crosses the Serra do Mar (Mountain of the Sea), in the center of a mountainous country having numerous graphitic outcrops. For a long time, these outcrops were irregularly explored by local people, who had little means and no technical advice. A few years ago, the Cia. Brasileira de Minerasgo de Grafite took over the control of some of the more important outcrops and entrusted to me the task of studying the ores and establishing a flowsheet for a pilot plant to be situated in São Fidelis—the ore to be concentrated being mostly of a very high grade. Mineralization and Ores The rocks of the district are mostly gneiss and crystalline schists, with occasional interstratification of dolomitic limestone belonging to the Archean Brazilian Fundamental Complex. The general direction of the beds is roughly between 60" and 80°E., with variable dip, generally nearly vertical. Mostly, direction and dip of the graphitic outcrops is concordant with the embanking gneisses or schists. These outcrops seem to be aligned in two or three parallel zones (Pádua, São Fidelis, Mac- abu), the Sao Fidelis zone being the best known and the most important to date. Two outcrops of the São Fidelis zone, Saudade and Sao Benedito, are now being exploited. Mining has been carried out, so far, on a small scale. The mineralization consists of a vein of nearly massive graphite in a very compact, partially granitized gneiss, with vertical dip. The vein is most irregular, with nests and lenses irregularly distributed along the fracture plane. The ore consists chiefly (particularly in Sao Benedito) of massive graphite appearing and disappearing along the main direction of the vein, forming a succession of irregular lenses in a sort of rosary design. The average width is more or less one foot, with variations from zero to 6 feet. The lode minerals are quartz, a little feldspar and garnet (the latter having its origin perhaps in the embedding gneisses), with rare ferruginous clays on the outcrops. In Saudade a little pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite is found occasionally, as well as a carbonaceous mineral, very light, black and shiny, with conchoidal fracture, looking like a sort of jet. The composition of this mineral has not yet been established, but it seems to be very complex. The mineralization seems to be hydro-thermal at a rather low temperature, perhaps mesothermal. The paragenesis, according to samples from Saudade, seems to be as follows, the earlier minerals being listed first: pyrrhotite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, with quartz concomitant to the three and graphite formed later. It is not known when silica sand was first noticed along the north coast of Puerto Rico, but the first mention of its occurrence was made in 1922, by N. L. Britton,1 who described its presence in isolated patches extending from Loiza westward beyond Manati. Further observations were made in 1925 and 1926 by Meyerhoff,2 who extended the known occurrences still farther westward to the low hill belt in the Quebradillas limestone immediately south of Hatillo. The extraordinary purity of the sands, which in most localities exhibit no contamination from the non-siliceous materials surrounding them, was quickly appreciated, and the feasibility of utilizing them for the manufacture of glass was investigated, initially by the Committee on Mineral Resources3 and later (1936) by the Puerto Rico Recon-structionAdministration and by H. C. Ray, mining engineer of the Insular Bureau of Mines. In 1934 samples submitted to the Hazel Atlas Glass Co., of Washington, Pennsylvania, were reported to have the composition as shown in the table on column two. Appreciation of the quality of the sand prompted geological and quantitative studies of the deposits, as well as cornmercial investigations to determine the feasibility of utilizing it locally or on the mainland for the manufacture of glass containers. Distribution of the Sands The quartz sands consistently lie within the outcrop area of the Quebradillas limestone, the youngest of the Miocene formations in the Tertiary coastal plain that fringes the northern coast of the Island. Many of the deposits are closely associated with limestone outcrops, but some appear to be embedded in lagoonal sediments at some distance from rock exposures, and at least one deposit, near Dorado, has been reworked by waves and littoral currents. With this single known exception, the deposits consist of irregular, patternless patches of white sand, which have sharply defined contacts with the surrounding material. Although patches of sand are present in a 90-km. belt that is not more than 5 km. wide, extending from Loiza to Hatillo, they attain maximum size, purity and number in the north central coastal area between Dorado and Barceloneta. For many years pine oil has been used extensively as a frother for the flotation of minerals, particularly sulphides, yet the published information available to the average user on its composition, chemical and physical properties, has been rather meager. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss these points and their relationship to the frothing properties of pine oil used in flotation processes. Pine oil, as the name implies, is a liquid obtained from the processing of wood of the longleaf and other southern pines. It is a complex mixture of naturally occurring terpene derivatives, primarily alcohols, and a smaller amount of terpenes, which has found many uses in various industries. Its use as a frother in flotation processes was the first large-scale application in industry and today the mining industry still consumes large quantities of pine oil but the textile and disinfectant industries consume comparable volumes. Much is used in soap manufacture and laundry operations. The surface-active properties of pine oil are in a large degree responsible for this versatility. History The name "Naval Stores" goes back to the days when pine tar and pitch were used to caulk leaky ships and 'Oat their ropes and rigging. Today this term is still used to include not only the oleoresinous products of the pine tree—rosin and turpentine— but other products such as pine oil, pine tar, and the many terpene and resinous compounds obtained by extracting the pine wood or tapping the tree. That part of the industry known as "wood naval stores" dates from about the beginning of this century and today produces a large part of the country's rosin and turpentine by processing pine wood. In addition, all of our natural pine oil is supplied by the wood naval stores industry, as tapping of the live tree gives only rosin and turpentine. This latter phase is known as the "gum naval stores " industry. The first successful commercial operation of the steam and solvent process of the wood naval stores in industry was carried out by Yaryan at Cadillac, Mich., in 1909.1 This operation did not prove profitable, so Yaryan went south to utilize the longleaf pine, and built a plant at Gulfport, Miss.2 Soon after, another plant was built at Brunswick, Ga., which is still in operation, and in 1914 was reported to have processed about 500 tons of wood per day.' In 1921 Hercules Powder Co. acquired the Yaryan interests, at which time the production of pine oil was only 3 to 5 million pounds per year and flotation was the largest customer. As time went on, technological advances were made, other companies entered the field, and the production of pine oil increased many fold. The investigation of the phase relations of high-purity aluminum-base alloys is a part of the fundamental research program of the laboratories of the Aluminum Company of America. The results of a number of binary and ternary systems have previously been published in the Transactions of this society. The aluminum end of the binary aluminum-titanium system has been studied. This system has received relatively little attention. To the authors' knowledge, there are two previous papers on this subject. E. van Erckelensl determined the constitutional diagram reproduced in Fig. 1. According to this diagram, the liquidus represents the separation of TiA14, (Ti = 30.7 per cent.). He concluded that this is the composition of the compound, because in his work the eutectic horizontal terminated at 30.7 per cent. titanium and the metallographic examinalion of a sample of this composition revealed only one phase. According to the constitutional diagram developed by W. Manchot and A. Leber,² reproduced in Fig. 2 from data given in their article, the liquidus represents the separation of the compound TiA13 (Ti = 37.2 per cent. ). The composition of the compound was derived in a manner similar to that utilized by van Erckelens. Moreover, Manchot and Leber confirmed the composition of the compound by analysis of the constituent left as a residue after dissolving the alloys in weak sodium hydroxide solution. Although these are the only publications describing the constitution of the system, other investigators have studied the composition of the titanium compound. L. WÖhler3 says that there is a compound TiA13 which was later confirmed by W. Manchot and P. Richter4 and by

The nature of slimes handled in the treatment of gold- and silver-ores has been discussed in technical literature to a considerable extent. The subject of slime-filtration from the practical worker's stand-point has also received much comment, arid scattered through the literature of the subject are descriptions of many slime-filtration installations. Articles of this nature serve a valuable purpose and assist materially in the design of new and the improvement of old plants. The subject of the physics of slime-filtration has been touched upon to only a slight extent. The underlying principles are worthy of niore intensive study and experimeritation than they have received, and the main purpose of this paper is to present the results of such study and experimental work as will serve to make clear in part at least many of the principles which control the filtration of slime. Nature of Slime. Much has been written concerning an accurate definition of the term "slime," but no comprehensive definition seems to be gcnerally accepted. The reason for this is clear. A slime consists of at least three different substances, each, when separated, possessing distinctly different physical and to a certain extent chemical properties. These substances are extremely fine sand, a colloidal material which may bc and generally is in a coagulated condition, and a colloidal material which is in a non-coagulated condition. (Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) THE plant and quarries of the Inland d Portland Cement Co.. are located- at Metaline Falls, Wash, about 128 miles north of Spokane, on the Fend Oreille river, and 10 miles, of the Canadian border. The plant is one of a chain of cement plants controlled by the Lehigh Portland Cement Co., of Allentown, Pa. Work on this plant was commenced in June, 1910, and was completed in April, 1911, but on account of some delays in the construction of the power plant, the works were not put into operation until August., 1911. Since then it has been in continuous operation and has furnished the Inland Empire with a high grade of cement. Fig. 1 is a, view and Fig. 2 is a plan of the works. Water Power Development.-The source of the water supply for the hydro-electric plant of the Inland Portland Cement Co. is Sullivan lake, a body of water approximately 5.5 miles long and 0.5 mile wide, situated in the Kanisku Forest Reserve. A wooden crib dam was installed so as to raise the elevation of the lake 25 f and the additional storage capacity was taken up by the diversion of Sullivan creek into the lake by means of a wooden flume, 0.25 mile long, 6 by 8 ft. in crosssection, and a ditch 1,200 ft. long. The water from the lake follows the natural water course to an intermediate storage reservoir, which was created by the construction of an earthen dam. This pond was used in connection with the saw mill which was installed at this point. Besides the earth dam, there was also built a crib, at the point shown in the sketch map, Fig. 3. This crib dam is 35 ft. high. From this point the excess water follows the natural -course of Sullivan creek to the Pend Oreille river.

It seems a common opinion among metallographists that all light-gray inclusions seen with the microscope in polished sections of steel are manganese sulphide. Examples of this belief are continually appearing, as for instance in the paper by Dr. Henry Fay on manganese sulphide as a source of danger in steel railsll and in Lieutenant-Commander Cook's paper on Metallography of Steel for U. S. Naval Ordnance.² Slate- colored inclusions are considered to be silicates, and dove-gray inclusions, manganese sulphide. To show the danger in the latter unqualified assumption, it should be sufficient to examine the edge of any piece of steel that is covered with a fairly thick scale, and that has been polished in such a way as to prevent the scale from breaking away entirely below the polished surface. A method is described in which particulate iron, as distinguished from high purity iron powders used in powder metallurgy, is a precipitant for copper contained in dilute solutions. A new precipitation apparatus utilizes particulate iron precipitants to recover copper more efficiently than is possible in a conventional launder precipitation plant. In the search for lower cost methods of recovering copper from mine water, the use of sponge iron or particulate iron (as distinguished from iron powder used in powder metallurgy) as precipitants in place of tin cans, detinned scrap iron, or scrap iron is an intriguing possibility. The relatively faster copper precipitation rate obtained with particulate iron as compared to scrap iron promises economic and processing advantages when, and if, particulate iron becomes competitive cost-wise with available scrap iron. Kennecott has developed a precipitation cone,' see Fig. 1, utilizing various particulate iron precipitants and has demonstrated the process successfully in a prototype at a flow rate of approximately 1000 gal of solution per min. Essentially complete precipitation of copper is obtained, the cone overflow solution is clear and contains no particulate copper, and the iron factor is more favorable than in a conventional launder plant. Initially, sponge iron produced at the Ray Mines Div. Kennecott Copper Corp. for use in a Leach-Precipitation-Flotation process was used in exploratory tests to develop a suitable apparatus to take advantage of the rapid precipitation rate and efficient iron utilization for the recovery of copper from dilute solutions. Here it was demonstrated that, when sponge iron was added to a launder, the particles of iron collected in the bottom of the launder and tended to cement together. This resulted in incomplete precipitation of the copper and inefficient utilization of the iron. Next, sponge iron was suspended in glass columns to study the dynamics of the precipitation reaction. Again it was observed that the particles tended to cement together at low solution flow rates, while at higher flow rates large amounts of the precipitant overflowed the column, resulting in loss of precipitant and an inefficient process. Next, the precipitant was suspended in an inverted cone in a rising column of solution. Dynamic suspension of the solids was maintained at relatively rapid solution flow rates with instantaneous and complete precipitation of copper and with improved iron utilization. The first tests were conducted on a batch basis and it was determined that a dynamically suspended bed of precipitant was necessary for satisfactory operation. More than 99% of the metallic iron could be converted to metallic copper by careful control of the residence time in the cone and copper precipitation was essentially complete, even when the available iron precipitant was almost depleted. Several cones were built, ranging in capacity from 1 to 200 gal of feed solution per min, and finally, a prototype cone was constructed which was 20-ft high

Under the title, Labor-Saving Appliances in the Works-Laboratory, I published a paper1 in which mas described how multi-manipulations in a works-laboratory and in the furnace-room of an assay-laboratory, can be condensed into single manipulations by applying the proper mechanical devices. For example, I now deposit ill, or withdraw from, a muffle a set of 48 cupels as one unit. The front row (8) of these are blanks or heaters; the other 40, when they have attained the proper temperature in the muffle, are charged simultaneously with the 40 lead-buttons. Three manipulations here accomplish an operation which by the generally customary method requires 136, and this number is only limited by the size of muffle and cnpels. This operation is an enlargement of what I have already described in my former paper, and Fig. 1 shows the improved implements. In the paper referred to I described a gold-silver bead parting-bath, which is the last of the devices used in regular sequence in practice. This bath mas designated as being convenient, but mas not a labor-saver properly. Fig. 2 of the present paper shows a new device. Instead of the original tray, there are now sectional holders for the test-tubes, each having a wooden handle on either end, so that the holders ma?-be removed from the boiling bath, and the acid or water poured oE from each set of tubes (in this case, 7) without waiting to cool. The tubes, held in place by clutches, as shown in Pig. 3, rest in holes in the base-strip, having a smaller diameter than the tubes. Each holder is stamped at either end with a number, so that the bath becomes further useful by permitting several men to use it at the same time without interference. Apart from the handles, the holders are made of sheet-copper.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of systematic analyses of weakness patterns. The term weakness here includes structural features such as fractures, foliation planes, lineaments and bedding. Many of these features are mapped by geologists in the field, but analysis of the field date is frequently overlooked. Examples are presented to show the value of such studies in petroleum and mineral exploration, in dam site selection, and in regional tectonic interpretations. Numerous theories have been presented to account for the mechanics and time of origin of fracturing. This is an extensive subject and cannot be reviewed in detail here. The reader may wish to refer to other papers.*"5 It is sufficient to say that most fracture patterns can be related to one or more of the following force mechanisms: compression, tension, torsion and fatigue (inheritance by upward propagation of pre-existing fractures). Fractures generally occur in sets in a district. The angular relationships and other characteristics of the individual sets frequently help in determining the force mechanism and movement history of the deformation. From a geometric point of view fractures are commonly referred to as longitudinal, cross, or diagonal (shear), depending upon their orientation relative to other major structural features such as anticlinal axes and so forth. These terms will be used from time to time and are illustrated schematically in Fig. 1. FIELD PROCEDURE AND TREATMENT OF DATA In fracture studies it is very important to collect adequate field data. Fig. 2 illustrates a notebook sheet for recording significant field observations in sedimentary rocks. Slight adaptations have to be made for igneous and metamorphic terrains. Fracture density and persistence are very important factors in petroleum exploration for fractured reservoirs and mineral exploration. A simple means of predicting the flowing well pressure history in a natural gas reservoir has been developed. The differential equation for unsteady radial flow of gases through porous media was solved by numerical methods using electronic punch card machines. The results obtained from these calculations are presented in a generalized form which is believed to be most convenient for engineering use. These results are compared with those presented in a paper by Bruce, et al4. An effective radius of drainage has been defined which permits the equation of steady state gas flow to be used easily to predict well pressures in gas reservoir depletion. An equivalent effective radius of drainage is defined for liquid flow systems and a comparison is made of the gas solution to the liquid solutions. INTRODUCTION This paper presents a numerical method for describing the transient flow of gases radially through a porous medium from which the production rate is specified. The results obtained from these calculations are presented in a generalized form which is believed to be the most convenient for engineering use. The principal application of these calculations should be to flow in natural gas reservoirs, in the interpretation of pressure drawdown tests, in the estimation of reserves, and in calculation of injection pressures required in gas injection and cycling operations. The evaluation of natural gas wells is based upon back-pressure tests in which measurements of production rate and flowing well pressure are made for periods of one, two, or more days. The flow is assumed to have stabilized at this time, and the observed values of pressure and production rate are used with standardized formulae to determine the well's allowable production rate. Furthermore, the results obtained from such a test of short time duration are extrapolated in such a manner to allow a prediction of what the well pressure will be at some future time for a specified (but possibly untested) flow rate. The manner of conducting such back-pressure tests suggests several questions as follows: 1. 'What is the definition of stabilized flow and what factors determine the length of time required for the flow to become stabilized? 2. How may the recorded values of pressure and rate be utilized? 3. As the well is produced and the reservoir pressure falls, how will the flowing well pressure change? Can this flowing well pressure be predicted from the back-pressure test? 4. Are the results obtainable from the test influenced by a particular procedure used in obtaining the results? 5. Is it possible to estimate the gross reservoir permeability from back-pressure data? It is not within the scope of this paper to provide solutions Or even to discuss adequately all the above questions. However. in considering such matters, the

DURING 1956 the application of geology and related scientific disciplines to the search for new mineral deposits went forward on an ever widening front. Spurred on by record-breaking consumption of many of the established commodities and new uses for minerals and metals that were hardly known a few years ago, the profession is figuratively leaving no stone unturned in the effort to insure that adequate raw material supplies will be avail- able for the future. More money was spent and more people were engaged along more lines of research than ever before. A huge project to map much of the Canadian Shield area by photogeologic methods stands at one extreme; application of isotope ratios to ore finding stands at the other; between them the more traditional techniques are being increasingly refined. In the Fiftieth Anniversary volume of Economic Geology, published late in 1955, Alan Bateman sketches the development of fundamental concepts as recorded in the pages of the journal over the first five decades. An additional 24 review articles cover individual aspects of the field and constitute a base for further advances.

SUCCESS of the dislocation theory in formulating the transitional lattice theory proposed by Har-greaves and Hill in 1929' is well established for low angle grain boundaries. The theoretical work of Burgersa and Read and Shockley,3 together with the experimental observations of Aust and Chalmers4 and Parker and colleagues,6 leaves little doubt as to the structure of grain boundaries with differences of orientations up to between 15" and 20". Beyond these angles, the structure of the boundary is not so clear, and is still a matter for conjecture. There have been notable experiments devised from which the data could be used to calculate energetics for possible arrangements of atoms in forming a large angle boundary.6 Most of these experiments deal with diffusion through and along the grain boundary. The recent work of Rhines and Cochart7 and Rhines, Bond, and Kissel18 was concerned with the relative movement of grains in aluminum bicrystals under constant tensile loads with their boundaries aligned at 45 " to the tension axis. The gliding along the grain boundary was cyclic and began after an incubation period. The velocity of gliding increased with the sum of the angular difference, 8, between the operative slip direction in the conjugate crystals and the angular difference between the active slip planes as measured between their traces upon the grain boundary. The initial gliding rate varied with temperature, and the logarithm of the average gliding taken over a considerable period was a linear function of the reciprocal of the absolute temperature: the slope gave an activation energy of 11,000 ±1,000 cal per mole. Since the rate of grain boundary shear is sensitive to the misorientation of the grains themselves, as shown by several workers,7,8 it is suggested that further work of this type might be fruitful in adding information regarding the behavior of boundaries under stress. The techniques devised by Chalmers" added impetus to the facility for observing grain boundary behavior, in that they provided a simple means for producing bicrystals of predetermined orientation so that the angle of the boundary could be controlled,
