Pyritic smelting, so-called, as practiced in the Black Hills is pyritic smelting only in the sense that Dr. John Percy uses the expression in his " Metallurgy of Silver," where he describes a process for smelting dry silver-ores in connection with iron pyrites, to form a regulus. The ores treated by this process in the Black Hills are very siliceous, averaging about 74 per cent. of silica, from 10 to 20 of iron oxide, 4 or 5 of alumina, and from 2 to 4 of lime. In 1889, while Dean of the South Dakota School of Mines, I took up the question of their smelting. There were neither copper- nor lead-ores in the Hills; hence pyrite and pyrrhotite, of which there are large deposits, were employed to form a regulus. This mixture of pyrite and pyrrhotite, besides being absolutely barren of gold and silver, carried an average of 30 per cent. of silica. The only basic material available as a flux for the great excess of silica in the ores and in the pyrite was a dolomitic limestone. Moreover, the local coke gave 24 per cent. of ash, 60 per cent. of which was silica—as unpromising a set of conditions as can well be imagined. We had before us the examples of Mr. W. The writer has been interested for some time in trying to appraise our industry's prospects for gasoline consumption over the next half dozen years or so. Anyone who has even approached the problem knows the intimate relationship to it of the number of automobiles in use— by automobiles I mean both passenger cars and trucks. Probably at least 90 per cent of our gasoline is used in automotive vehicles. Few of us in the oil industry needed to give much attention to the detailed figures, although the automobile industry seemed to interest itself in all sorts of calculations of replacement demand vs. new car demand, the average life of the car, the number scrapped, and the like. Probably many people in the oil industry, as well as outside it, were surprised at the way in which automobile registrations and gasoline consumption held up during the early years of the depression. The tank car price of gasoline today is controlled by oil in the ground, rather than by stocks of gasoline or methods of refining. Previous to the commercial cracking of fuel oil, there was a normal and continuous relation between gasoline stocks, consumption and prices. From the beginning of the new cracking era in 1923 to the summer of 1926 there was a changing relationship, growing toward a correlation between the potential gasoline in storage and the price of gasoline. Since the development of large reserves of shutin production in Wyoming, California, Seminole, West Texas and Venezuela, the relationship between stocks of gasoline and gasoline prices has disappeared. The extreme depression of the Group 3 price can only be accounted for by oil which is not being produced but which we fear may be produced at any time. In Fig. 1, the curve of gasoline stocks is simply stocks of finished gasoline. The curve of potential gasoline is made by taking 40 per cent. of all stocks except gasoline, kerosene and lubricants, adding to that stocks of finished gasoline and dividing the sum by total gasoline con-sumption to get the months' supply of gasoline at the current rate of consumption. The price curve is the lower figure given by the National Petroleum News for the first quoted date of each month, with the price scale reversed. Stocks of potential gasoline have decrrased from 17 months' supply at the peak of 1924 to a low of 7 months' supply during the past summer, yet the low immediately precedes the lowest price for gasoline since it was a waste product. The tendency of the price curve to parallel the curve of potential supply is quite pronounced until the summer of 1926, since which time they have abruptly separated. The curve of gasolinct stocks is equally remarkable in relation to price when it is considered that total consumption for the year 1927 is almost exactly twice that of 1924. Clearly a new factor has been introduced. There is no possible factor to account for this distortion except known reserves of oil in ground storage, and therefore, until such time as the Bureau of Mines or the

The Sparrows Point plant of Bethlehem Steel Co., southeast of Baltimore, is the largest Bethlehem plant, with an annual rated capacity of 6.2 million ingot tons. There is considerable diversity of product, but a high percentage is sheet, tin plate, galvanized sheets, and rod and wire. The large amount of light-weight end product requires a number of pickling installations that necessarily consume large quantities of sulfuric acid. In the coking operations sulfuric acid is also consumed in recovery of ammonia as ammonium sulfate and in treatment of recovered light oil derivatives. Total sulfuric acid consumption in the plant is currently approaching 10,000 tons per month, of which 55 to 60 pct is required for pickling. In 1951 the acute sulfur shortage caused grave concern as to future sulfuric acid supply for the Sparrows Point plant. Raw materials for acid making were already at hand in the form of hydrogen sulfide and pyrites sufficient to produce nearly half the sulfuric acid required at that time. It was also known that the Bethlehem mining activities would produce additional pyrites in the future. Late in 1951 Bethlehem management decided to build a 250-ton sulfuric acid plant at Sparrows Point to utilize these raw materials. The plant was built and put in operation in May 1953. The steel plant has expanded considerably since 1951, and it is now necessary to operate the acid plant far over rated capacity in order to supply plant demand. Production of acid in 1954 amounted to 93,000 tons.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) INTRODUCTION CRUDE oil attracted attention because of its excellence as a fuel for open-hearth furnaces; for making crucible steel and brass; for melting copper, lead, tin, zinc, nickel, silver, malleable iron, gray iron; and for the production of steam in all sizes and types of boilers. For heating furnaces, mold-drying ovens, core ovens, ore roasters, calciners, hot-air furnaces, sand drying, asphalt road work, etc., its superiority over other fuels is due to the fact that the heat is at all times under perfect control, so that a constant temperature may be attained and maintained at the will of the operator. This means a maximum amount and uniform quality of work. Crude oil is of two kinds, paraffine base and asphaltum base, and varies from 11 to 46 gravity Baumé. The light-gravity oil does not require heating before use; but oil of less than 20 gravity Baumé should be heated to just below its vaporizing point, in order to reduce its viscosity and to obtain the highest efficiency of combustion. Heavy California oil vaporizes at 230°'F., Mexican crude oil at from 175° to 210° F., and Beaumont, Texas, oil at 142° F. Fuel oil vaporizes at 130° F.

It is recognized that in the early days of the petroleum industry oil was produced with practically no scientific or fundamental knowledge of the laws and principles governing its extraction from the ground. Only a few, if any, of those exploiting the oil resources made any effort to collect accurate scientific information. There was little need for it, for as is frequently the case where the supply of a natural resource appears inexhaustible and is greater than the demand, large profits were possible from merely skimming the surface with little regard to the efficiency or thoroughness with which the oil was obtained. With this policy in force, great quantities of gas were wasted and when the reservoirs ceased producing by natural means they still contained a large fraetion of the oil originally in them. The present tendency in the industry is toward conserving existing oil reserves. In order that greater percentages of the oil present in the ground may be recovered, efforts are being made to improve production methods and to rework depleted fields. If the production methods are to be improved intelligently it is essential that the fundamental laws be known and understood, consequently large amounts of money and effort are being spent in gathering data that will serve to define and interpret these laws. A great deal of attention is being focussed on the study of the motion of oil through an oil-bearing sand, the forces that cause it to move and the factors that affect its motion. It is recognized that one of the important factors is pressure, but its quantitative effect is not known. In a given field the rate of production declines with time and so does the rock pressure. The function of the c1assifier in modern fine-grinding practice is to remove a finished product from the grinding-mill discharge, leaving material that needs further comminution. The classifier, therefore, makes two products: (1) "finished" product, which overflows the rim of the classifier tank, sometimes referred to as "slimes" or as "classifier overflow," and (2) "unfinished" product, which settles to the sloping bottom of the classifier tank and is removed by dragging or raking. This product is generally referred to as "sands" or "oversize." One of the outstanding features of the closed-circuit classifier is its ability automatically to return the unfinished product of the ball-mill discharge to the feed end or scoop box of the ball mill. This is a distinct advantage because it avoids dilution of the ball-mill feed, and, furthermore, the particu1ar method of removing the settled sand, by raking it up the inclined bottom of the classifier, gives a classifier discharge containing a minimum of water. This leads to maximum classifier efficiency, in this type of classifier, because the maximum volume of water is displaced upward by the settling sands. The closed-circuit classifier is required to deliver a finished pulp of closely specified density requirements, therefore added hydraulic water generally is not permitted. Relation of Classifier Efficiency to Grinding Efficiency The energy of crushing, and therefore the cost, according to Rittinger's Law,l is proportional to the new surface exposed in crushing. Since the new surface produced in crushing is nearly proportional to the reciprocals of the diameters crushed to, it is obvious that the cost of crushing in the finer sizes is tremendously greater than in the coarser sizes for equal ratios of reduction. High circulating load of finished sand in the circuit of the classifier and grinding mill is therefore obviously expensive practice. It is the classifier's function to reduce this to a miniMum.

Solid solution alloying increases the plastic properties of aluminum at elevated temperatures by solid solution strengthening, by restraining recovery and recrystallization, and by a Cottrell effect. When binary aluminum alloys are strained and aged at 1940° to 300°K they develop a yield point. This is attributed to a migration of dislocations to solute atoms during aging. IN view of the ever expanding interest in applications of metals and alloys to high temperature service conditions, it becomes increasingly important to be cognizant of the effect of various metallurgical factors on the strength of alloys at elevated temperatures. One problem of wide interest, not only because of its engineering significance but also due to its fundamental scientific importance, is the elucidation of the effect of alloying elements on the plastic properties of homogeneous a solid solutions at elevated temperatures. It is indeed astonishing to note that in spite of its importance, and in spite of extensive random testing of alloys at elevated temperatures, no systematic investigation has been reported yet on the effect of alloying additions on the plastic properties of a solid solutions at elevated temperatures. This deficiency in our knowledge prompted the investigation described in this report. Rather extensive data are currently available on the effect of alloying elements on the plastic properties of a solid solutions at atmospheric and sub-atmospheric temperatures. Such data might be ex- trapolated to higher temperatures and reasonable guesses might be made regarding the influence of such factors as recovery and recrystallization in order to hazard a qualitative estimate of the effect of alloying elements on the plastic properties of a solid solutions at elevated temperatures. INTRODUCTION Pyrite responds to the flotation reagents normally used in sulfide flotation systems. For example, it is well known that xanthates are good collectors for pyrite, and cyanide, sulfide and hydroxides are depressants. The particular response of pyrite to these and other reagents is used to advantage in several areas. By careful control of depressant and collector additions, pyrite can be separated from other sulfides by flotation. This is of obvious importance in base metal sulfide flotation where pyrite depression is often required to produce a marketable grade concentrate. Flotation of pyrite has long been employed in gold ore processing, and it appears that pyrite flotation from coal may become important in the future (1). It is probably a direct consequence of this relative ease of separation, plus the low economic value of pyrite, that detailed investigations on the chemistry of its flotation and depression are relatively limited. Gaudin (2, 3, 4) and others, in the mid-1950's published data on the flotation of pyrite, but detailed or consistent mechanisms were lacking. In 1955, Sutherland and Wark's book (5) was published, in which a large , amount of empirical information, especially earlier work of Wark and Cox, was presented. More recently, in 1968, significant contributions have been made by Fuerstenau et al. (6, 7) and Majima and Takeda (8). These papers introduced electrochemical explanations of the effects observed with xanthate and cyanide ions.

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) IN any discussion of this very large subject we are confronted at the outset with so many obstacles that at best only a fragmentary and rather disconnected presentation can be made of it, and my hope is that building from the few facts I have to offer a more complete knowledge may be secured. In the whole intermountain and Pacific. Coast region, west of Pueblo, Col., and from Canada to Mexico, there is no production of pig iron, and steel production is confined to the manufacture of a small amount of open-hearth steel from scrap. When we consider the area, the resources, and the several centers of population, this condition seems anomalous, even in. the face of every counter argument as to cheap water transportation, or other means of transport from the Atlantic Seaboard or from the iron and steel centers of the Middle West. This comatose condition, if such a term may be applied, is certainly riot due to a lack of all the essential materials and factors for success in iron and steel smelting, but is rather, I think, due largely to the general fact that it is only within a comparatively few years that the centers of population on the Pacific Coast have attained a size that would entitle them to the position of distributing or freight centers, or that the "back country" has been enough built up to make it sufficiently interesting to the railroads to foster trade from the local centers to the interior points rather than seek to supply such local centers and the interior by a transcontinental haul.

Explanation of the usual methods of large-production mill treatment, such as flotation or wet tabling, or of chemically treating industrial minerals, is not included in the scope of this paper, although one of these methods might be, in certain instances, augmented by one or more of the special methods that will be enumerated herein. Description of these special methods will be centered on magnetic separators, electro-static separators and air flotation or air tables.

Preplaced cable bolts - fully grouted old hoisting cables or stress relieved steel strands - have been used succesfully to pre- reinforce ore contact zones and pillars in sublevel stoping at Outo- kumpu Oy mines for ten years. The purpose is to make open stoping methods possible even in "poor'' conditions and to decrease waste rock dilution. Since 1971 more than 120 km cable bolting has been done, and plans for this year in five mines amount to 33 km. In order to understand the function of cable bolt, pull-out tests have been done both in the laboratory and in situ. Bond strength between cable and cement is highly dependent on cable structure and cable surface dirtiness. Steel cables with steel core and rough surface structure have highest bond strength ( 6 MP~). A cable bolt is a friction bolt. After losing its peak bond strength - after starting to move - a cable bolt still has a high loading capacity due to the friction caused by the uneven surface of the cable. Cable bolting is done before actual stoping from existing drifts, sublevel drifts, e.g. or from special bolting drifts. In general stress relieved steel strands are used; 2 x 15.2 mm dia per hole. FEM or BEM calculation is utilized in cable bolting design. Bolts 2 are in fan shape, 10 m ... 50 m long and are spaced 1/20 m ... 1/50 m2 at stope walls. Pretensioning of cable is not needed, when bolting is done before rock deformations. Bolting costs vary between 0.3 USD ... 1.0 USD/ore ton. In the beginning only manual cable installing technique bras used. Now bolting can be done as fully mechanized with the developed cable bolting machine; i.e. drilling of the hole, installing and cutting of cables and grouting of hole.

Barite deposits are of widespread occurrence in Nevada but there are few producing properties; most of the latter are in northern Nevada. The production of the state is small at present—in the neighborhood of 15,000 tons annually—but is steadily increasing. The barite occurs in veins and also as replacement deposits in limestone. The bulk of the production has come from the replacement deposits. It is thought that the barite was deposited from rising hot waters similar to—and probably contemporaneous with—those responsible for some of the metallic ores of the state. This paper discusses only the deposits in northern Nevada. The commercial mining of barite did not begin in Nevada until 1916 but although the production has been small there has been a rapid increase in tonnage during the past several years. Barite is widely distributed in the state and production comes from at least nine of the seventeen counties. Apparently this is not generally known, as only two counties arc mentioned in a recent publication6 dealing with barite. The increase in output is due largely to recently discovered barite deposits in northern Nevada. The principal production has come from the northern portions of Lander and Eureka counties; smaller amounts from Elko County. The discussion in this paper is confined largely to the deposits in these counties. Most of the producing area is tributary to the Western Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads, whose tracks lie along the Humboldt River. Barite is known from other northern counties but so far the production has been small. The output has come entirely from veins and replacement deposits, the latter largely in sedimentary rocks. In general, the barite from veins is white; that from the replacement deposits usually is dark gray to black, although some is light gray or white. Most of the veins contain sulphides and many barite-bearing veins have been worked for their content of base or precious metals. Production The recorded production in Nevada to the end of 1938, according to the U. S. Bureau of Mines,3 is 66,424 short tons, of which 57,157 tons

Activities of aluminum in solid Fe-Al alloys have been determined between 0 and 75 at, pct Al and 1100" and 1400°K by an isopiestic method in which iron specimens, heated in a temperature gradient, are equilibrated in a closed all-ceramic system with aluminum vapor. The activity of aluminum in these alloys shows a strong negative deviation from Raoult's law at low concentrations but increases rapidly above 40 at. pct Al. The enthalpy and entropy of mixing me both negative. For an alloy with equiatomic composition the values are: HM = -7300 cal and SM = -0.85 eu. Sodium chloride has been added at lower temperatures to accelerate the evaporation of aluminum. Equations have been derived to calculate activities of aluminum from experimental data. THE Fe-Al system has been the object of a great number of investigations.' Most of these studies have been concerned with the phase diagram and specifically with the order-disorder reactions in the range of solid solutions of aluminum in iron. The results have been compiled by Hansen2 and presented as a complete phase diagram, Fig. 1. More recently, Taylor and ones' have found that both ordered and disordered alloys can exist in the a field up to the solidus curve separated by a line starting at 18.75 at. pct Al at room temperature up to 37 at. pct Al at 1375°C. Chipman and coworkers4-7 have studied repeatedly the activity of aluminum in liquid dilute Fe-Al alloys. They have measured the distribution equilibrium of aluminum between liquid iron and

IN this paper, it is proposed to outline a method for the determination of melting points of those metals and alloys having high fusion temperatures. The application of the method as used to determine the melting points of alloys of tungsten and molybdenum will be given. This is also verified by the accompanying photomicrographs. Tungsten and molybdenum have been found to crystallize in the salve system, namely, isometric, and the crystal units are cubes. These determinations were made by examining etching pits in the pure metals.

In recent years in situ leach mining has emerged as a viable technology for the recovery of uranium from strata in South Texas which contain relatively low concentrations of uranium ore. Because the ore bodies lie within ground-water aquifers, a significant determinant in the economics is the requirement that such aquifers be protected from contamination. Since ammonia is one of the constituents of the leach solutions now being field tested, one environmental problem to be resolved is the removal of ammonia at the end of mining. A second related question is the fate of the ammonia which is not removed by the restoration procedure. This paper considers the displacement and migration of ammonium in a flowing electrolyte with concomitant ion exchange. The ion exchange is an important feature since, during the solution mining phase, ammonium saturates the mineral exchange sites and must be removed from these sites. A mathematical model is used to simulate this process and the model is tested against the results of laborator.y experiments. It is found that the simulations are adequate if an appropriate selection of parameters is made. The model is then used to investigate the effect of cation composition and concentration of the restoration medium as well as dispersion on the overall effectiveness of the process. It is concluded that increasing the concentration of monovalent ions in a solution containing a mixture of both monovalent and divalent ions decreases the adsorption selectivity of the divalent ions with respect to all monovalent ions including ammonium. Thus increasing the ionic concentration of a restoration fluid by increasing the concentration of a nonselectively adsorbed (with respect to ammonium) ion may have a very limited benefit.

The purpose of this paper is to relate briefly the development of magnetic separation and its extension from the separation of iron into its present use in the nonmetallic field, to suggest possible future extensions of its field of usefulness and its possible cooperation with other separating methods. The engineering design of separating machines, and statistics as to the number of machines in operation, types, their location and production are outside the scope of this paper. Specific data will be given, however, on certain selected applications. A large part of human endeavor consists in separating one thing from another; the good from the bad, the desired from the undesired. In fact, a philosopher might plausibly claim that separating things into categories and choosing between them is the object of thought itself. In dealing with matter, separation is nowhere more inherently necessary to attain our objects than in mining and metallurgy. Both our desire and our ability to make separations are results of the physical differences between things. Gross separations such as removing ore from worthless rock or coal from slate are usually made visually and depend upon form and color, which are physical properties. When the desired and the undesired things are intimately mixed, however, it becomes impractical to select visually even if the individual particles are readily recognizable to the eye, and some automatic way of making the particles separate themselves on the basis of their own inherent differences in physical properties must be resorted to. Some of the physical properties which have been used as a basis of separation are: color, shape, hardness, size, density, elasticity, surface propertics (surface tension in contact with liquids, etc.), electrical conductivity, dielectric constant, and magnetic susceptibility. Differences in these properties are used in the following methods of separation: color sorting, sifting, settlement in air and in liquids, float-sink methods, flotation, electrostatic and magnetic separation.

With the expansion of open pit operations, belt conveyors are going to be used in the 13 608 to 18 144 t/h (15,000 to 20,000 stph) capacity range, which calls for a review of some of the horsepower calculation methods. This paper presents methods (based on German research data, field tests and theoretical considerations) for the evaluation of the Ky factor in the CEMA formula for belt conveyors of large carrying capacity, which fall beyond the limits of the data given in tables in the CEMA book. (The CEMA limits are 407 N\\m (300 lb ft) and Tave = 7.3 Mg (16,000 lb). At these large loads, the impression resistance of the belting on the idlers plays a major role, which in turn influences the magnitude of the drive horse power required. An example will illustrate the order of magnitude difference of the horsepower values obtained by using a conventional calculation method and the suggested method, as well as the beneficcia1 influence of the 4-roll idler in comparison to the standard 3-roll unit for a large caving capacity belt conveyor. This paper concerns itself with the analysis of the resistance to motion of belt conveyors, emphasizing the evaluation of the frictional resistance to motion due to load and belt pressure on the idlers and the flexing resistance of the belt and material when passing over the idlers. In the case of long and heavily loaded belt conveyors, the aforementioned resistances reach extremely high values calling for close analysis of the phenomena, presently not calculable with normally used formulas. This paper establishes correlation between experimental and empirical data presenting practical formulas a tool for the designer of high-capacity belt conveyors. The application of the formula is illustrated in an example in the Appendix.

Being much interested in efficiency-work in general, and an ardent reader of writings on this subject by Frederick W. Taylor and others, as applied to manufacturing-plants, and having served my apprenticeship from mucking to the engineering design of ore-dressing and underground plants, I hope that this paper will lead others to investigate the field more fully, to the improvement of general mine- and mill-operations, as well as the advancement, intellectually, physically, and financially, of the employee and his relations with the employer. If a man who is prepared to look closely and observe broadly starts in Canada and zig-zags from camp to camp to southern Mexico, taking time casually to inspect mines, mills, and smelters, he will be pitifully impressed by the great difference in customs, and the general waste of labor, time, and money throughout the country. He will so seldom observe a dollar's worth of results given in exchange for a dollar spent that he will form a poor opinion of operating-efficiency and management. This highly-scientific department, requiring an amount of skill and executive ability equaled in few, if any, of the professions, certainly falls short of the standard established in our greater manufacturing industries. It is easily said that this is due to the diversity of conditions in mining, milling, and smelting. But on second view it must be admitted that there is room for tremendous improvements in nearly every mining-organization. The proposal of such improvements is often met by the argument that any mine is but a temporary affair, yielding such profits as to make efficiency-work of no consequence; but any business which is profitable and worth doing at all is worth doing on a basis which gives the greatest return on the investment.
