Shaft lining reinforcing analysis of two shafts under construction has been presented in this study. The first shaft was driven from the surface, while the second was deepened. Mining and geological conditions have been studied with respect to the lining capacity. The improvement of shaft stability comprised two elements, i.e. reinforcement of the shaft lining capacity and improvement of the strength properties of the rock mass. In both tested cases, the particular hazard was connected with non uniform loadings of the lining, which could generate shearing stresses within lining structure. Thus such elements as armored concrete with high strength properties, bolting and injection sealing of the rock mass, and the use of special ring reinforcing the shaft lining have been used in order to reinforce the shaft-rock mass system. Practical conclusions related with new technological solutions, allowing the rock mass and shaft lining reinforcement, have been included for the present study. Four mining alternatives for exploiting an ultra-deep orebody were assessed through a multidisciplinary evaluation process which involved: the generation of a 3D geological model; the design and scheduling of life-of-mine layouts; the analysis of anticipated ventilation and cooling conditions; the study of rock-related risks of mining in ultra-deep stress environments; the logistic implications of transporting men, rock and materials; and, lastly, the economic implications of each option. Once results from the integrated mine design assessment were available, mine planners were faced with an important problem to solve: how to identify the optimal mine design alternative when numerous assessment measures and multiple decision criteria needed to be considered simultaneously? To address this ‘multiple-attribute decision problem’ and arrive at the ‘optimal layout for ultra-depth’, a generic decision methodology that uses principles of ‘utility’ was applied. The methodology assumes that ‘single-value risk estimators’ do not account for the inherent variability of real conditions. Therefore, risk estimators were represented by statistical distributions of their incremental changes, where applicable. The stochastic variables, once defined, are used as inputs in the ‘utility’-based layout decision scheme. This ‘utility’-based decision methodology offers a framework for mine design decisions to be made objectively, when complex trade-offs between multiple risk domains need to be considered simultaneously. Construction of foundations for the Skyway Segment of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge required innovative techniques due to the mass of the structures being inserted and the unique subsurface of the Bay. Twenty of the pier structures required large sheet pile cofferdams. Eight other foundations were installed in open water without cofferdams at the deeper part of the Bay. This narrative will present the initial planning, as well as the stages of installation, for each type of foundation. The first section will discuss foundation constructability modifications made during the initial planning phases of the project. Considerable effort was expended by Caltrans, the owner, T.Y. Lin the designer, and KFM (Kiewit/FCI/Manson) the contractor in modifying the design to assure that required tolerance would be maintained during the installation of the foundations. The final section will describe the steps required for installation including: initial access dredging, installation of cofferdams, preparation required to install the footing boxes, footing box installation, foundation support pile installation, and pile to box connections.

This paper discusses support requirements for the proposed monorail system to be used in decline development. The monorail drilling and loading systems are systems that move on the rail (monorail) installed in the roof of the decline and supported by roof bolts, suspension chains and steel supports. However, due to the weight of the components of the two systems, it is imperative that the force in each roof bolt, suspension chain and steel support capable of suspending the weight of the heaviest component is determined. Numerical models that relate the weight of the monorail drilling and loading components to the required strength in the support system have been developed. Using these developed models, numerical values of the forces in each roof bolt, suspension chain and steel support, required to suspend the weight of the heaviest component of the monorail drilling and loading systems are determined.

The coal measures of the South Wales coalfield contain at least 50 horizons at which coal seams are known, to occur. More than 300 samples of coal were collected from these coal measures and this paper outlines thefindings of an investigation of the pattern and distribution of 12 trace elements in South Wales coals. A comparison of trace element contents of the South Wales coals is made with trace element values found elsewhereand an attempt was made to establish the organic affinity of the elements in different seams and in the coalfield 'as a whole. An important function of such an analysis is to determine the order of abundance of trace elements and this was performed for individual seams and for the whole coalfield.The interrelationship of certain elements in some seams is also examined with a view to understanding the effectiveness of such an approach to seam correlation.Ranges of values are quoted together with the mean values of the various elements. Variations of elemental values within a seam section and over the coalfield as a whole are discussed.

Close spatial relationships between the deposits of the Etheridge Goldfield (23 000 kg of bullion) and various regional geological and geophysical features suggest that genesis of the ore deposits was a multi-stage process that started with magmatic and metamorphic stages in the mid-Proterozoic, climaxed with structural and hydrothermal stages in the late Palaeozoic and terminated with an oxidation enrichment stage in the Cainozoic.This hypothesis permits classification of the Georgetown region into areas likely to contain deposits of the Etheridge type and those unlikely to do so; it is concluded that there is little scope for the discovery of extensions of this field.However, the stratigraphic interval between the postulated source rocks of the Etheridge field and stratigraphically higher host rocks of the Croydon field may contain disseminated replacement gold deposits of the Carlin type. The potential host (Pyritic carbonaceous, and locally dolomitic siltstone of the Candlow Formation) is locally faulted and cut by granitoids and the extension of a mineralised, long-standing zone of structural weakness.

The bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on April 19, 1995, has once again renewed public debate surrounding the availability and use of explosives in the United States. In the past, Congressional review of explosives regulation has generally followed tragic events such as the bombing of Pan American World Airways Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988; the February 26, 1993, bombing of the World Trade Center in New York City; and the delivery of six package bombs to members of one family in several western New York communities, killing five people, on December 23, 1993.

Self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers are conquering the world for reason that they are able to solve any severe fouling problem in indirect heat transfer due to the circulation of cleaning particles through the tubes of vertical shell and tube exchangers. In most cases, these particles consist of chopped metal wire. Moreover, self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers perform with excellent heat transfer at very low liquid velocities, which makes completely new designs of shell and tube configurations possible. Further, self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchangers show a strong shear thinning effect in non-Newtonian liquids. All the above characteristics make the self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchanger an ideal tool for the indirect heating of laterite nickel slurry in High-Pressure-Acid-Leach (HPAL) plants. Preliminary tests and evaluations of these heat exchangers have shown that the performance and price of these heat exchangers used for the production of nickel and cobalt from a laterite slurry, cannot be matched by existing conventional heat exchange systems. This article explains the principle, design, lay-out and enormous advantages of the self-cleaning fluidized bed heat exchange technology in a plant suitable for an annual production of approx. 45,000 ton nickel and 4,500 ton cobalt from laterite slurry through high pressure'acid leaching.

A method of calculating formation water resistivities from chemical analyses is presented which is somewhat faster and more accurate than previously described methods. For 26 formation water samples taken from wells in the Texas Gulf Coast, the average deviation of calculated from measured water resistivities was 3.3 per cent, with an average bias of + l.l per cent in the calculated values. This compares with average deviations of 4.6 per cent and 7.8 per cent, with corresponding average biases of +3.2 per cent and -6.3 per cent, for the two methods previously described in the litera-

Diesel particulate filter (DPF) systems and biodiesel fuels are two of the most promising technologies available to the mining industry to reduce the exposure of underground miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM). A study has been conducted to estimate the potential of DPF systems and biodiesel blends to reduce DPM emissions from production vehicles. Results of testing three DPF systems in an isolated zone showed 88% to 99% reductions in elemental carbon concentrations. The test results also show that biodiesel blends, B20 and B50, reduced the elemental carbon concentrations in the mine air by 26 and 48 percent, respectively.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to determine the theoretical stress distribution in the vicinity of explosively expanded rock bolt anchors independent of their bolts. Plane-strain solutions applicable to this problem were obtained by combining the field pressure with the uniform pressure that would be produced by vertically placed anchors having 2-, 3-, and 4-foot spacings. High rock stress which would be produced by an anchor was localized, as would be expected from St. Venant's effect, and increased as the field pressure decreased.
