FOR many years geologists have felt that mining companies should adopt a more liberal policy in the publication of their reports. The increasing usefulness of the geologist to the mining profession in recent years demands that consideration be given to this question. Prior to 1900, the call for geologists of high reputation by mining companies was probably mainly in connection with lawsuits arising from the interpretation of rights or ownership as defined by the "Law of the Apex," and from problems such as finding the continuation of the vein or whether the vein followed was the main one or a branch. Later, outside of legal questions, the most intensive and general use of their services arose from the search for oil. Geologists to determine the position of the formations

"Refuge alternatives provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. Manufacturers must demonstrate that their refuge alternatives meet the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and management of heat from the occupants and mechanical/chemical systems. In this study, miner size and activity level were used to determine the metabolic heat rate, oxygen requirements and carbon dioxide generation that are representative of miners in a refuge situation. A convenience sample of 198 male miners was used for the distribution of current U.S. coal miners, and the composite 95th percentile height and weight were determined to be 193 cm (76 in.) and 133 kg (293 lb). The resting metabolic rate (RMR) was determined to be representative of activity level in a refuge alternative. The highest likely metabolic heat generation ranged from 113 to 134 W, depending on occupancy. The highest required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal were estimated to be 23 L (0.81 cu ft) of oxygen per hour per person and 20 L (0.71 cu ft) of carbon dioxide per hour per person, which means the margin of safety is 50 percent or more compared with the MSHA requirements. The information on metabolic heat generation can be used to assess refuge alternative thermal environments by testing or simulation. The required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal can be used to assess refuge alternative requirements. "Abstract - Perhaps the single most significant variable in the evaluation of a mining project is the reserve estimate. Many parameters are considered when estimating reserves, among them geology. This paper examines the link between the quality of a reserve estimate and a good understanding of the geological controls for the deposit. A clear understanding of the geometry is essential to the accurate definition of the shape and size of the deposit. This includes the definition of any structural controls as well as the proper interpretation of the stratigraphy. Further when the distribution of grades is erratic and there is consequently a high nugget effect, there are significant problems in estimating the true grade of the deposit.Two Saskatchewan examples are presented, one with good knowledge of the controls and therefore good estimates of reserves, and the other with a poor understanding of the geology and resultant problems in deriving good estimates. In both cases the reserve estimates at various stages in the project development are compared to actual results from underground work. The first example is the Star Lake Mine where just about all the estimates were within 10% of the actual on both tonnage and grade. The Laurel Lake deposit is discussed to show how problems in interpreting the geological data make reserve estimation very difficult. At present we are witnessing large investments in the iron ore industry, fuelled by demand from Asia. At the same time, there is a changing landscape in pricing of iron ores, with the recent demise of the benchmark system and the evolution of market based index pricing systems. From a customer perspective, it is the behaviour of iron ores in downstream processing that gives them their value; their impact on the sintering or pelletising process and subsequently blast furnace ironmaking. It is therefore important to consider this value when developing projects, making mine planning/cut-off grade decisions, and in setting quality price differentials.This paper describes the use of the Marx value in use (VIU) model to quantify the downstream value of iron ores. The Marx model consists of heat and mass balance modules for sintering, pelletising and a rigorous two-stage heat and mass balance model of blast furnace ironmaking. Mass balance and cost models are applied for steelmaking, casting and rolling. The use of a heat and mass balance allows accurate comparison of the impact of raw material properties on blast furnace operation. The impact of minor elements, such as alumina, silica and phosphorus, and metallurgical properties on ironmaking is described, and examples given for the relative value of haematite, Marra Mamba, and channel iron deposit (CID) ores.

Reservoir oil in the Greater Aneth area, Utah, part of the Paradox basin, was studied to detect variation in oil characteristics within the reservoir and to determine its relation to age of accumulation and fluid equilibrium. At least three subsurface oil samples were obtained from each of the four largest of five field divisions comprising a producing area of 45,000 acres. Height of the oil column in the Pennsylvanian Desert Creek zone is about 230 ft. In general, the oil characteristics were found to be uniform across the area, and averages were developed for use in engineering applications. Average saturation pressure was 1,780 psia; the oil was undersaturated at the initial reservoir pressure, 2,200 psia. Variation in saturation pressure shows a lack of complete fluid equilibrium and continuing diffusion of solution gas from the main body of the reservoir to two extensions linked by narrow arms. By assuming early accumulation, the time involved in this diffusion process was calculated to be about the same as the age of the reservoir formation. Cause of the concentration of gas in the main body is attributed to differential entrapment during accumulation of oil and gas from an exterior source.

A review is given of the nomenclature, sources, imports, statistics, common methods of preparation, and testing of mineral pigments. A description of the Deer Park-Spokane colored-clay district and the laboratory methods of preparation of these colored clays, others, and siennas follows. The mineral pigments were prepared by washing or grinding the original material as received and by calcination of the yellow ocher and brown sienna with and without manganese dioxide to produce red, brown, and black colors. These prepared powders were tested for fineness, oil absorption, and color as compared with well-known brands of commercial pigments. Similar tests were made with several basalt red clays occurring in the neighborhood of Salem, Oreg., and Kalama, Eatonville, and Clay City, Wash. The color particularly was studied, since this property is the most important commercial characteristic of the minerals. PURPOSE OF INVESTIGATION Since the development of the clay industry in the Pacific Northwest, some curiosity and interest have been aroused by the red and yellow clay or ocherouslike material that has often been found associated with the commercial clay deposits. These include the red and yellow "paint pots" near Deer Park and Spokane in eastern Washington, a red clay at Clay City, another close to Eatonville in western Washington, and red basalt earths near Salem, Oreg., and along the Columbia River near Kalama, Wash. Several companies have been organized to produce pigment colors from two of these deposits but have either discontinued or never started operations.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the recovery of tin and silver from the Coal Creek deposit in the Talkeetna Mountains, AK. Approximately 5 million st of reserves grading 0.2 pct Sn with silver credits of 0.2 tr oz/st have been delineated by drilling. A 10-to 25-pct Sn gravity concentrate was produced by treating the minus 20-mesh ore with a spiral, then regrinding to minus 65 mesh and tabling. Sulfide contamination in the gravity concentrate was as high as 60 pet. Sulfide flotation of this concentrate produced tailings containing 40 to 50 pet Sn. Overall recovery was 76 pct for tin but only 5 to 10 pct for silver because of losses during sulfide flotation. Other methods tested to clean the concentrate included cassiterite flotation, gangue flotation, nitric acid leaching, and wet and dry magnetic separation. Tin beneficiation tests on the minus 325-mesh fraction included cassiterite flotation, vanning, sulfide flotation, and fuming. The bench-scale and locked-cycle tests were used to estimate the mass flows for a 1,000-st/d plant.

The development of residual stress in strip during rolling has not been systematically studied. A few scattered papers1 -3 mention the existence of residual stresses in rolled strip or touch upon some of their consequences,4 but there is no report of experimental studies in the literature describing the effect of roll diameter, strip thickness, reduction per pass, metal or metal temper on the magnitude of residual stresses developed in strip. A knowledge of the effect of these factors is of utmost importance since the present trend in some mills to roll thicker castings brings the rolling operation directly into that set of conditions which, as will be brought out in the present paper, can develop residual stresses of a high order of magnitude. Fundamentally, residual stresses are developed when a metal is inhomogeneously unloaded from a plastic stress state. A quantitative treatment of the problem requires a reasonably complete understanding of both the plastic stress state existing in the metal during deformation and the elastic stress state that would exist in the metal if the metal deformed as a perfectly elastic body. Our knowledge of either state during rolling is so meager that we can make no more than certain limited predictions. The external stress state* operating between the roll and the metal consists of Fig i—External stress state operating on metal being rolled (after siebel and LUEG5) compressive stresses acting almost perpendicularly to the strip surface but varying in intensity both across the width of the strip and along the length of contact between the roll and the strip. An example of such a stress distribution is shown in Fig I. The nature of the internal stress state, produced by this distribution, is not known. Various investigators,5-7 however, have felt that a qualitative similarity must exist between the internal stress state so produced and that produced in a wide strip that is compressed between two flat-nosed punches. Na produção de vários tipos de aço o controle da composição, tamanho e distribuição das inclusões não-metálicas é de fundamental importância, não só para a qualidade dos produtos siderúrgicos, como também para a garantia da continuidade do processo de fabricação do aço. O controle da composição das inclusões é uma questão que pode ser adequadamente analisada com o uso da ferramenta ‘termodinâmica computacional’, proporcionando ao aciarista informações vitais para ajustes no processo. Neste estudo, com base em cálculos termodinâmicos, foram construídos diagramas de fases especiais com a utilização do software FactSage e seus bancos de dados. Especialmente as influências do Al e do Ti sobre a composição das inclusões foram analisadas, levando-se em conta o teor de oxigênio total. Duas metodologias (estática e dinâmica) foram usadas para se compreender o importante fenômeno da reoxidação. Os resultados deste trabalho, além de auxiliar engenheiros aciaristas a compreender este tipo de análise, deverão estimular estudantes desta área da engenharia a se engajar na assim chamada ‘termodinâmica computacional’.

O processo de um forno de endurecimento de pelotas cruas tipo grelha móvel baseia-se na queima de esferas, aglomerados de minério de ferro, acomodados no interior de carros de grelha que se movimentam com certa velocidade através das zonas do forno. Neste tipo de forno as pelotas cruas são queimadas predominantemente por convecção por gases aquecidos via queimadores instalados na zona de queima. Estes gases quentes passam por entre as pelotas com uma velocidade, densidade, viscosidade e temperatura tal que garante a secagem, a sinterização e o resfriamento das pelotas enquanto são movimentadas dentro dos fornos. A permeabilidade de um leito de pelotas é uma função direta dos espaços vazios formados pelo empacotamento destes aglomerados esféricos que o compõe. Este estudo validado na linha de produção teve como objetivo relacionar os espaços vazios com alguns parâmetros de controle operacional usuais na indústria de pelotização e associá-los a qualidade física, produtividade e ao custo de produção.

No atual cenário acirrado de competitividade, umas das linhas para redução do custo da mistura de carvões é o desenvolvimento de matérias-primas alternativas nacionais que minimizem o custo do coque e mitiguem a emissão de CO2. O presente trabalho avaliou a utilização de resíduos de shredder (fluff) como aditivo nas misturas para a produção de coque metalúrgico. A utilização de fluff na mistura de carvões minerais sugere uma rota de destinação ecologicamente correta, a fim de mitigar o impacto causado pelo acúmulo desse resíduo no meio-ambiente, além de uma alternativa para redução de custos de produção do coque metalúrgico. Foram realizados enfornamentos, em escala piloto, com adição de fluff, com objetivo de avaliar o impacto sobre a qualidade do coque, especialmente sobre a Resistência após Reação com CO2 (CSR) e a Resistência Mecânica a Frio (DI150-15). Os resultados mostraram a viabilidade técnica da adição de até 1% em massa do material, mantendo a qualidade metalúrgica do coque produzido.

O mercado mundial está se desenvolvendo continuamente em todos os segmentos com a finalidade de melhorar a qualidade e diminuir os custos. O aperfeiçoamento e a criação de novas técnicas de soldagem são responsáveis por conservar as propriedades mecânicas e realizar as soldas com um menor número de defeitos. Este trabalho apresenta o processo de soldagem por fricção com pino consumível, conhecido como FHPP (Friction Hydro Pillar Process) em pino AISI 4340 e chapa AISI 4140. Como toda nova técnica é importante conhecer os parâmetros que serão utilizados no processo. Compreender o efeito da velocidade de rotação, força axial e de forjamento, consumo do pino e taxa de carregamento são necessários para avaliar sua influência na microestrutura da solda. Desta forma, no presente estudo, após a soldagem foram realizadas metalografias, a fim de analisar defeitos macro e microestruturais. Por fim, verificou-se significativa influência dos parâmetros de processo no comportamento metalúrgico da região soldada.

Este artigo tem como objetivo demonstrar os ganhos obtidos com automatizações de atividades de suprimentos de média complexidade e alto tempo de execução. Para atingir o resultado sem investimento, foram desenvolvidas automatizações através de programação em Visual Basic (VBA) e Scripts SAP, utilizando como plataforma o Microsoft Excel. A integração do Excel com o SAP se mostrou eficaz, possibilitando a execução de tarefas de forma automatizada em massa, aumentando a confiabilidade das informações e reduzindo o tempo total de execução das atividades em 67%.

Devido à alta competitividade no mercado siderúrgico se faz necessário à otimizaçãodo processo como forma a atendermos a demanda de produção com um menorcusto de transformação. Nesse contexto, foi utilizado para desenvolvimento dotrabalho a metodologia DMAIC e os conceitos do “LEAN”. O objetivo do grupo foiestratificar o custo de produção do equipamento e atuar nos principais fatores, tendocomo princípio a redução do desperdício, aumento da produtividade da mão de obra,aliada a produtividade de tonelagem de material. Na estratificação do custo deprodução identificamos o “Rendimento metálico” como sendo o fator maissignificativo e propomos ações internas que contemplaram alteração de programade automação para melhora do descarte da cauda (Final) da bobina e com issoatingindo valores recordes de aproveitamento material acabado. Fizemos reduçõesde lead time do nosso processo eliminando os tempos que não agregam valores,aumentando a produtividade do equipamento. Com este trabalho conseguimosreduzir consideravelmente o custo de transformação do equipamento, além, deaumentar sua capacidade produtiva.

Os pós fluxantes são formados por escórias sintéticas que em contato com o aço líquido deve fundir e gerar uma escória líquida. Suas principais funções são: lubrificar e controlar a transferência de calor entre a casca sólida do metal e o molde. Eles possuem composições diferentes para diferentes condições de lingotamento, sendo formados, basicamente, por CaO, SiO2, Al2O3, Na2O, CaF2 e podem conter MgO, Li2O, K2O e B2O3. Como alguns componentes influenciam diretamente na cristalinidade dos fluxantes, como o CaO, o MgO, o CaF2, neste trabalho serão analisadas quatro misturas de pós fluxantes com leves variações na composição de modo que possa gerar cristalinidades diferentes. Para esta análise será utilizada o método de lâminas delgadas, com auxílio de um microscópio óptico de luz transmitida, que tem apresentado resultados bem satisfatório sobre o detalhamento da cristalinidade dos materiais.

Siderophyle platinum-group metals and sane gold are a thousand times more abundant in metal and chondritic meteorites than in terrestrial or lunar rocks. Type I and II carbonaceous chondrites contain granules of the high boiling point metals W, Re, Mo, Ir and Os. Metal meteorites and the metal fractions of other chondrites contain siderophyle Pt, Pd, Ru, Rh, Os, Ir and Au. Spectra of sunlight reflected from asteroids, when compared with those of meteorites and specific minerals, provide a rough classification and guide to sources of precious platin-group metals.

Reservoir oil analyses from seven wells in the Greater Clareton area have been included in a study of the original characteristics of oil in the Newcastle sandstone reservoir . These data correlated with areal location of the wells show an increase of saturation pressure in a general north - south or downdip direction . The increase amounts to about 500 psi in more than 17 miles , which corresponds to a depth increase of about 1,600 feet . To facilitate application of the data to engineering analyses , average characteristics are given for arbitrary north and south divisions of the 22 - mile - long producing area . The downdip increase of saturation pressure is taken as evidence of updip diffusion of solution gas from a somewhat higher concentration at the bottom of the reservoir . This effect is opposite to that previously observed in two prominent high- relief reservoirs in the Rocky Mountain area . The increasingly greater saturation pressures southward or downdip in the Greater Clareton area suggest a continuing migration of fluids into the structure .

"The Olympic Dam geometallurgy program has generated a large quantity of data that has been used to create a geometallurgically enabled block model. An ongoing challenge is to convert data into usable information and embed geometallurgical practices into resource model development and mine planning to assist with the identification of opportunities to maximise value.This paper will discuss the methods used to disseminate geometallurgical information throughout the planning life cycle including data extraction methods from the geometallurgy acQuire database, and the inclusion of a geometallurgy module in the Olympic Dam Stope Reserves database. The use of geometallurgical information in short-, medium- and long-term mine design and scheduling, including its use in grade descriptor development and stope value assessment tools will also be presented. "The Agnew (also known as the Perseverance) nickel deposit and its northern extension, the Rocky's Reward deposit, form one of the world's largest accumulations of nickel sulphides hosted by komatiites. Agnew was previously classified as an ""intrusive dunite-associated"" deposit . It has now been shown that the sulphides are hosted by komatiite flows which underlie an adcumulate-textured dunite body that crystallized in a large lava channel.The rocks of the mine area have been subjected to a metamorphic temperature of550°C and pressure of up to 3 kb. The komatiites have mostly been reconstituted to olivine-amphibole chlorite assemblages. There is a zoned sequence of enstatite-, anthophylite-, talc- and antigorite-bearing assemblages inwards from the western margin of the ultramatic reflecting variations in the CO/HP ratio of metamorphic fluids.Facing directions are determined from variations in the proportions of metamorphic minerals and in rock compositions which reflect asymmetric layering in the flows . Olivine-sulphides matrix ore is hosted in a single 50 m thick, east-facing flow that is overlain by flows containing massive sulphides. Much of the massive sulphide has been physically remobilized into fold noses, faults and shear zones. Chemical diffusion of ore components has upgraded a sulphide-rich metasedimentary unit where it is in structural contact with massive ore.To the north, the mineralized flow sequence is separated from a stratigraphically higher komatiite sequence, the Perseverance ultramafic complex, by approximately 150 m of felsic meta volcanic and meta sedimentary rocks. Southward, the Perseverance ultramafic grades laterally into an olivine adcumulate body and its lower contact cuts progressively down stratigraphy until it lies directly on top of olivine-sulphide ore of the mineralized flow sequence. This discordant contact is interpreted as the base of a thermal erosion channel formed by a voluminous komatiite lava flow. This contact greatly influenced later deformation of the mineralized flow sequence."
