NEARLY all problems in mining engineering involve the transport and distribution of materials from place to place, and in general the most economically managed mines and plants are those in which the transport of materials has been carried out most efficiently. Of all these transport problems, the hoisting of ore out of the mine and the distribution of same to the various treatment works is perhaps one of the most important. The mining industry, both here and internationally, is continually developing increasingly sophisticated software to compute mineral resource estimates, but these processes cannot compensate for a flawed geological interpretation of the geology of the economic commodity(s) concentrations. Quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) is becoming increasingly common in association with the sampling and assaying practices within the industry. However, it is rare in the case of a geological interpretation associated with mineral resource estimation. Why? In the context of this paper, QA/QC relates to the use of statistical and graphical tools to show that the geological economic commodity concentrations have been appropriately domained. Domaining is essential to improve the chance of getting a mineral resource estimate right. Commodity value and acceptable concentration variation within a mineral resource can be ingredients that make mineral resource estimation difficult to get right. But it is possible to get it right a very high proportion of the time. It is more likely to occur when inappropriate data consolidation is minimised. In any case, inappropriate data consolidation is significantly reduced when the geological interpretation is strongly consistent with the data and it is demonstrable. To achieve quality global estimates of geological domain concentrations, it is essential that the geology of the prospect is understood sufficiently that the deposit is appropriately domained. Appropriate domaining occurs when sample populations are separated in such a way that only data in harmony with each other within the population contributes to the domain's concentration estimate. The paper will use four brief case studies to illustrate how QA/QC can be used to display data and validate the underpinning geological interpretation through its associated domaining to get it right when it comes to a mineral resource estimation.

This talk was delivered in Kalgoorlie in April this year, to the Kalgoorlie Branch of The Institution of Engineers, Australia. We believe it is of such interest to members of our Institute and readers of this publication we believe it important to extend the audience who have the opportunity to read it. An edited version follows:"Why should we be so concerned about Mining Related Education; after all is said and done, the mining industry is not a great employer of persons?"The mining industry is capital rather than labour intensive. It employs only 2.7 per cent of the national workforce. However; the minerals industry is Australia's major exporter accounting for over 40 per cent of the nation's total export of goods.In Western Australia the value of minerals production in 1985 was about $5,000 million and consequently mineral exports accounted for about 53 per cent of the total value of overseas exports from the State. The diversity of the mining industry is also worthy of mention and produces iron ore, alumina, gold, nickel and mineral sands. That apart, our potential to become a major producer of diamonds, rare earths and petroleum products is considerable, not to mention base metals (copper, lead and zinc) and uranium.Our mining industry is of national importance and contributes in excess of 30 per cent of the total value of Australian overseas trade. Although the mining ind ustry does not employ many people, the people it employs contribute very much more, per capita, to the wealth of the nation than do employees in any other sector of our economy.No-one would deny that during the 20th century Australians have depended on the export earnings from the sale of relatively unprocessed agricultural products and more recently the sale of relatively unprocessed minerals for their standard of living.Not surprisingly, therefore, our economy is highly vulnerable to unstable world commodity market prices.The slump in trade we are currently experiencing (in first quarter 1987-Edition) was brought about by the over supply of the raw materials we produce. However, the recent downturn in world market prices is more serious than previous slumps because in part it is due to technological advances 'in other countries which could have a permanent effect on the world trade of primary products.

This paper attempts to highlight some of the problems encountered in the economic exploitation of the deeper coal seams by opencast mining methods. The major cost elements of three methods of overburden removal are examined in relation to the overall cost of winning coal from deeper-lying coal seams. The three overburden removal methods examined are dragline stripping and two systems combining dragline stripping with shovels and trucks at varying depths of overburden. A dragline is, undoubtedly, the most cost effective system of overburden removal for depths of up to 30 metres but it is suggested that, when dealing with incremental overburden depths in excess of 30 metres, engineers should consider carefully the possibility of using a shovel and truck operation, or other system, to augment the use of a dragline.

IN the art of cementation a controversy has been going on for years as to whether solid or gaseous carbon is the active agent in carburizing steel. More recently opinion has crystallized into a compromise to the effect that carburizing is a gaseous cementation of steel in the presence of solid carbon. The importance of this theory has a particular bearing upon the work to be described. In the art of carburizing, use is commonly made of such words as "catalytic," "atomic," "nascent" and "activated;" in an attempt to describe the process. These words are used indiscriminately. For, instance, the gas is said to be "catalytic" and carbon to be "nascent," or vice versa. In using these expressions, investigators are confirming the acceptance in their minds of the active conditions of both gas and carbon in the cementation process.

GROUND movement and subsidence is an important matter from several points of view and it is regrettable that more papers have not been written on this subject in the past year. Damage may be done to surface buildings or to the higher workings of a mine, and a study of the subject gives valuable in- formation on hanging-wall or roof control. The latter objective is strikingly shown in a recent paper presented by Jack Spaulding on Oct. 21, 1937, before the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, of Great Britain, entitled "Theory and Practice of Ground Control in the Kolar Gold Field, India." All may not agree with some of his theories that were deduced from studies of the many violent rock bursts at depths of 5000 to 7000 ft., but the data obtained are of great value. His theories of symmetrical ring stresses and symmetrical domes which are pictured as perfect are rather hard to understand as such uniformity is un- likely in view of the irregularities in the formation due to folds and fractures of various kinds. All will agree in principle with this idea of domal effects, which have been observed in many countries, but they are generally irregular.

THE program of government drilling, conducted jointly by the U. S. Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines, has demonstrated the presence in Texas and New Mexico of potash-bearing beds of considerable importance. Information regarding the ex- tent and location of the potash deposits as presented at the non-metallic sessions was of great interest to many engineers. These subjects will be covered in greater detail in later paragraphs. The first session, with about 50 in attendance, convened at 10 a.m. on Feb. 18, with Oliver Bowles, chair- man of the Committee on Non-Metallic Minerals, pre- siding. The first paper was on "Soapstone Mining In Virginia," presented by C. W. Ryan of Lynchburg, Va. The nature and extent of the soapstone deposits of Nelson County were described in some detail. In origin, the soapstone is undoubtedly related to a basic peridotite rock though its mode of formation is some- what uncertain. This main soapstone deposit occurs in three veins, the western, middle, and eastern, the middle vein being of greatest economic importance. Methods of stripping, quarrying and milling the rock were described and the uses of soapstone were enum- erated. In discussing this paper, C. P. Berkey, of Co- lumbia University strongly favored the theory of igneous origin of the soapstone and the need for further detailed geological study. J. L. Gillson of Cambridge, Mass., stated that the Vermont and New York talc deposits were always associated with characteristic minerals, such as, a chlorite of one particular variety, siderite, amphibole, magnetite, and biotite. C. H. Behre of Cincinnati, Ohio, raised the question of parallelism in the soapstone structure and Mr. Ryan stated that such parallelism was in evidence in some parts of the deposits. H. A. Wheeler of St. Louis, Mo., also took 'part in the discussion.

The two HYFIFLUX cruises of the German RV SONNE (SO 99/1995 and SO 134/1998) were organized in the framework of a co-operation between several German universities and two European marine research partners. It is a multidisciplinary program for the study of hydrothermalism with its associated geological, mineralogical, and biological processes in the North Fiji Basin (NFB) in the SW-Pacific. The main achievements of the HYFIFLUX cruises were detailed multibeam Hydrosweep mapping in order to identify the detailed tectonic setting, water sampling at hydrothermally active vents, mineral sampling at inactive sites with sulfide, sulfate, and silica mineralizations, and sampling of basaltic rocks, (Halbach et al. 1999). Oceanic accretion in the NFB is characterized by a double spreading system (Auzende et al. 1994),with one spreading axis located in the median part of the basin (Central Fiji Ridge, CFR) and the second one located immediately west of the Fiji platform (West Fiji Ridge). Most of our investigations were done in the northern part of the N 15° segment of the CFR, which corresponds to area A of our program, area D is located farther south in the NFB and corresponds to the N-S segment of the CFR (Fig. 1). During previous works under the French-Japanese STARMER project, the active ?White Lady? mound and the extinct Père Lachaiseí site were sampled; these samples were studied by Bendel et al. 1993. Here an inactive hydrothermal field was studied, where there were many sediment-covered chimneys in various stages of disintegration, (Bendel et al. 1993). Com a preocupação ambiental, econômica e social perante o descarte de metais oriundos da mineração, busca-se por métodos alternativos e sustentáveis de tratamento e recuperação. Dessa forma, o processo escolhido foi o de troca iônica e o estudo investiga a adsorção do Co2+, Cu2+ e Ni2+ por meio da resina quelante Purolite S950. A resina foi escolhida pela sua capacidade de adsorção dos metais de transição de uma solução ácida. Portanto, o trabalho tem como objetivo investigar o efeito da variação do pH 0,5-2,0, considerando o tempo de contato de 120 min a 25 ºC. Os ensaios foram executados em batelada e as amostras analisadas pela técnica de espectrometria de fluorescência de raios-x de energia dispersiva (EDX). Por meio dos ensaios realizados, foi concluído que a resina quelante Purolite S950 utilizada no estudo foi capaz de remover os metais, destacando a extração de 96,3 % Co2+, 94,8 % Cu2+ e 75,3 % Ni2+, quando a solução estava condicionada em pH 2,0.

Abstract-It has long been recognized that platinum-group-element (PGE) deposits in layered intrusions preferentially occur in intrusions that crystallized from high-Mg parent magmas. Recent studies suggest that evaluation of any given intrusion for economic PGE potential should also include assessment of the PGE, sulfur and chlorine concentrations in the cumulates and potential parent liquids. PGE: Magmas that contain relatively abundant Pt and Pd are the best candidates for forming economic deposits. Although analyses of coeval sills and dikes are the best indicators of primary magmatic PGE concentrations, analysis of the cumulates themselves is also valuable. For example, within the Stillwater complex, background PGE values in cumulates from the ultramafic sections of the complex contain, on average, several 10s of ppb Pt and Pd. Background concentrations of this order are suggestive that the magma was not depleted in the PGE. Sulfur: Conventional petrogenetic models for the formation of PGE deposits in layered intrusions require the PGE to have been concentrated during a magmatic sulfide-saturation event. In contrast, some hydrothermal models suggest that sulfur and the PGE were mobilized from footwall cumulates by upward- migrating, high-temperature hydrothermal fluids. Both models suggest that significant PGE deposits are likely to occur at and below the level where stratigraphic increases in whole rock sulfur concentrations occur. Chlorine: In both the Stillwater and Bushveld complexes the cumulate sequences below the major PGE-bearing zones contain anomalous Cl-rich apatite. The chlorapatite component of apatite in these rocks may exceed 40% and, in the Stillwater complex, typically exceeds 90%. It is stressed that pristine igneous mineral analysis and not whole rock data be used, as whole rock Cl concentrations may be affected by very localized (grain boundary), low-temperature alteration. Intrusions that crystallized from high-Mg, high-Cl magmas appear to have the best potential to host significant PGE deposits.

In this study Dynamic Finite Element Modelling is used to investigate the distribution of peak particle accelerations (PPA) induced in a rock mass by a vertical decked column of explosives. The rock mass is assumed to be viscoelastic. The influence of the delay time between decking charges, the viscosity attenuation (quality factor Q), the decking configuration, and the velocity of detonation (VOD) on PPAs is examined. The results of this paper are relevant to fragmentation since the nature of the fragmentation is related to the stress magnitude and hence the PPAs. It was found that increasing the VOD, and increasing Q increases the PPAs in the neighbourhood of the blasthole. However, the VOD and rock quality factor Q have little influence upon the distribution of PPA. It was also found that an even distribution of PPAs, at a fixed distance from the blasthole, could only be obtained by increasing the ratio of charge length to stemming length. The study showed that the amplitudes and distribution of PPA surrounding the blasthole was approximately independent of the delay time between the decked charges. The modelling also shows that the particle accelerations at locations below the bottom of the charge are relatively small and so the model predicts no substantial damage below the bottom of the charge after blasting.

A presença de elementos residuais nas sucatas ferrosas pode influenciar a qualidade do aço produzido na aciaria elétrica. Além disto, o cloro existente nos materiais orgânicos que acompanham as sucatas leva a problemas de ordem ambiental. Por este motivo, o acompanhamento destes contaminantes através de métodos de amostragem de sucata se torna uma tarefa importante na aciaria elétrica. Neste trabalho são apresentados alguns procedimentos de amostragem de sucata, bem como uma análise comparativa de sucatas processadas por moinhos do tipo shredder e sucatas sem processamento. Os resultados mostraram um aumento da densidade e a redução do teor de contaminantes (matéria orgânica, alumínio e aço inox) para a sucata processada por shredder em comparação com a sucata sem processamento. Complementando, é apresentado um perfil da concentração de cloro em diversos materiais orgânicos comumentemente encontrados nas sucatas.

The record of fatalities from mine explosions in the United States during the fiscal years 1934 to 1937 wars the best in the history of the mining industry; that for the fiscal year 1939, however, is not so favorable, since nearly as many men (170) were killed by explosions in 1938 as were killed during all of the previous 4 years (182). In spite of the large increase in fatalities from explosions during 1938, the average for the past 5 year period (70.4) is less than one-half the average (13) of the preceding 5 year period. The reasons for the large increase in the number of explosion fatalities during the 7 past year as compared with the previous 4 year are not entirely clear; it is: evident, however, that in some instances there has been laxity in the enforcement of State minim laws, and also that come of our coal-mining people, including workers and operating officials, have failed to carry out tine known precautionary measures to prevent explosions.

Hatch forecasts that an increasing share of seaborne traded iron ore will be ultrafine, being either concentrate or pellet feed. This provides several challenges for the iron and steel industries, but the principal concern is: how much ultrafine iron ore can be consumed on sinter strands and with a minimal effect on productivity?This paper will identify new supply by project through 2020. Demand will be estimated for sinter production and practical steps will be identified to increase ultrafine consumption in sinter strands. The long-term iron ore price will be forecast to balance supply and demand. Zirconium is the 20th most abundant element in the Earth?s crust and it most often occurs in the form of silicate (as zircon), less often in the oxide form (as baddeleyite or caldesite). Historically, the world?s production of zircon was entirely derived from mining and processing beach sands or heavy mineral sands that were being exploited primarily for their titanium content, i.e., to generate TiO2 feedstocks that would be used for making titanium pigments and, to a lesser extent, titanium metal. Zircon was then regarded as a byproduct, with the sharply fluctuating prices typical of a commodity where the supply is essentially involuntary and not truly responsive to market demand. However, in recent years, zircon has shown considerable mining investment appeal in its own right. Projects have been planned ? and some have already come to fruition ? based mainly on the zircon potential of the deposit. Booming Chinese demand for zircon to meet the requirements of the ceramic and zirconium chemical sectors has been a major factor causing zircon prices (f.o.b. Australia) to surge from US$674/t ($611/st) at [ ] the end of 2005 to beyond US$2,400/t ($2,177/st) by the end of 2011.

Through numerical mathematical processing (Taylor’s approach and numerical derivation) the original data supplied by the accelerometer’s sensors was transformed into velocity and, after the data mining, a statistics residue analysis was applied in order to evaluate if the data from the prototype and from the traditional seismographs were similar. IT is essential to the success of any mining op::ration that the roadways through which the material wrought and ocher materials and supplies are to be transported should be kept in such condition that this transportation cart be effected rapidly and without difficulty. The longer the roadway and the greater the tonnage to be taken over it, the more necessary it becomes chat the construction and maintenance of the road be such chat traffic delays can be reduced co a minimum. le is proposed co deal with the development and construction of roadways serving longwall operations and, since a recreating system of longwall is worked, as a rule, only where roadways driven in the solid coal can be readily maintained, the discussion will be confined co advancing longwall roads which are driven through areas from which the coal seam has been totally extracted. In order to construct a roadway through extracted ground in such a manner that it will remain in a state of reasonably good repair without undue maintenance, it is necessary chat everything possible be done to bring the overlying strata co a state of equilibrium as quickly as this can be effected, and the operations should be so planned that future workings will not disturb the equilibrium so set up more than can be avoided. Obviously, the readiest way to obtain a stable roadway is to develop it by tunnelling through a settled waste. However, this cannot always be done, as some of the roadways must be developed and constructed as the walls progress, but level or lateral cut-offs can be constructed in this manner. Main-slope roads can be developed in a similar manner after the coal has been extracted and a waste formed for at !east five hundred feet on either side of the line of the permanent roadway from temporary subsidiary roads developed for this purpose along one or other of the flanks of the waste to be formed. This interval must be obtained in order chat the lacer extraction of the seam will not set up movements in the waste immediately overlying or adjacent to the constructed roadway, thus upsetting the equilibrium of the strata and distorting the road.

Indirect, gravity flow, heat exchangers have become a well established technology in mineral and metallurgical process plants. The technology is a conventional heat exchanger using high efficiency plates, with a free flowing bulk solid on one side of the exchanger and a fluid on the other side. This simple concept leads to many opportunities for achieving greater energy efficiencies in process plants. Indirect heat exchange is much more efficient than direct heat exchange using air such as in a fluid bed or rotary device. When air is used directly, large fans are required, it may also be necessary to chill the air, both high consumers of energy. By contrast, using water as the cooling medium requires only low horsepower pumps, typically only 10% of fan HP. Furthermore there are no stack emissions with the requirement for removal of dust or emissions. Indirect heat exchange also creates the opportunity to recover energy. This can work in two ways: energy can be recovered from a hot bulk solid, to heat pressurized hot water for steam generation or preheat air. Alternatively recovered energy from elsewhere in the plant in the form of hot water, steam, air or thermal oil can be used to preheat a bulk solid.

"Geomechanical and geotechnical characteristics of coal seam are important parameters that directly affect the cavability of top coal in the longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) method. The impact of these parameters such as coal strength, coal deformation modulus, coal discontinuities and top-coal thickness on cavability has not been fully understood in previous numerical analyses. The limitation and selection of the numerical modelling codes were two of the main reasons. In this paper, detailed caving simulations are performed using a 2D distinct element method (DEM) code, UDEC, to study the effect of various critical parameters on top-coal cavability. The numerical analysis evidently shows that the coal deformation modulus, coal discontinuities, and top-coal thickness have considerable influences on cavability. Coal strength is also a factor but to a lesser extent. The results presented in this paper contribute to the understanding of top-coal cavability in different mining environments and facilitate the development of an advanced cavability evaluation criterion. INTRODUCTION The longwall top-coal caving (LTCC) method was originally developed in the 1950s in the former Soviet Union and France (Tien, 1998). The method was nearly abandoned in Europe after the mid-1980s; however, it has been significantly improved and widely applied in China since the late 1980s. A conceptual model of the LTCC method is shown in Figure 1 in which a thick coal seam is divided into two sections including the lower or cutting section, and the upper or top coal section. The lower section of coal seam is mined by conventional longwall method. Meanwhile, the upper section is recovered by caving through the face support. The LTCC method is considered to be the most viable option for mining general thick seams.
