The purpose of this paper is to provide the rationale for decision making when considering the use of three heading gate roads in Australian underground coal mines.There are currently 30 underground longwall mines in Australia with all but two employing two heading gate road longwall layouts. The volumetric capacity of these two heading ventilation circuits is evidently viable in typical block lengths and in low to moderate gas regimes. However, in gassier regimes, potential longwall production rates of 10 Mt/a, and or where block lengths are being extended to well beyond historical norms, a conventional two heading U circuit may not be adequate. Other than seam gas emission, block length and production dependent heat loads together sealed area management requirements also have to be considered.The two mines currently employing three heading gate roads have the opportunity to revert to two headings at any time but, based on operational experience to date, have not done so due to the consequential reduction in gas management capacity and lower production rates associated with gas delays and limitations on tailgate access.Although there are a number of alternative two heading longwall circuits available and employed worldwide, the custom and practice of promoting inert goaf atmospheres in most Australian coal mines to mitigate the risk of catastrophic gas explosions and spontaneous combustion often prevents the use of gas loaded bleeder systems. In this respect, Australian underground coal mines may be considered the safest in the world.The current situation is that three heading gate roads have been proven successful in Australian conditions, albeit at additional cost, where two heading ventilation circuits cannot manage net seam gas emission to the ventilation system at the production rates required. Um dos tratamentos superficiais mais conhecidos é a nitretação a plasma, que consiste basicamente na introdução de nitrogênio na superfície da ferramenta, na forma de nitretos de elementos de liga, em solução sólida, a fim de criar uma camada protetora que aumenta a vida útil do material. A nitretação a plasma permite o controle da camada formada através do ajuste de parâmetros como temperatura, mistura gasosa e tempo de tratamento. Porém para ferramentas mais complexas é comumente utilizado um novo processo de nitretação, a nitretação a plasma com gaiola catódica que tem como principal diferencial o aquecimento homogêneo das peças, evitando assim a heterogeneidade da camada nitretada. Outra vantagem é que neste processo não é comum ocorrer o acumulo de plasma o que evita o efeito de borda. Neste trabalho, será analisada a importância da menor rugosidade superficial aliada a dureza superficial no comportamento tribológico do material no processo de nitretação a plasma com e sem gaiola catódica. O resultado dos ensaios tribológicos demonstraram que o incremento de dureza associado a uma menor rugosidade superficial obtido para a amostra nitretada com gaiola catódica promoveu uma redução no coeficiente de atrito ao longo do tempo. A rugosidade superficial média para as amostras nitretadas com gaiola catódica foi menor que as nitretadas via processo convencional, aproximando-se do valor obtido para às amostras que foram polidas.

Os aços inoxidáveis martensíticos, em geral, aliam boas propriedades mecânicas e satisfatória resistência à corrosão, características associadas à possibilidade de realização de tratamentos térmicos de têmpera e revenimento. Nesse contexto, no presente trabalho foram avaliados os efeitos das condições desses tratamentos na microestrutura e nas propriedades mecânicas de um aço inoxidável martensítico de médio teor de carbono. Foram consideradas três temperaturas de aquecimento na têmpera e seis temperaturas de revenimento. A avaliação microestrutural foi realizada por meio de microscopia óptica e microscopia eletrônica de varredura. As propriedades mecânicas foram avaliadas por meio de ensaios de dureza. Foi observada a elevação na dureza do aço com o aumento da temperatura de aquecimento na têmpera, assim como a dissolução dos carbonetos presentes no material. No revenimento subsequente observou-se o aparecimento do pico de dureza referente ao endurecimento secundário a uma temperatura de 500°C.

A simple technique for evaluating the field stress ratio is presented, based on the results of extensometer or convergence tape measure- ments taken in an advancing tunnel. This tech- nique also yields a value for the rock mass modulus, provided Poisson's Ratio is assumed. The results of two case studies are presented illustrating the effectiveness of the method.

O estudo objetivou a implantação de um sistema integrado de paletes que permitiu uma gestão eficiente do negócio, sendo possível controlar os índices de paletes disponíveis para a produção, paletes em reparo, paletes sucateados e balanceamento de estoque entre fábricas e centros de distribuição, contribuindo para uma redução da necessidade de compra de novos paletes. Além disto, propôs também a implantação de uma oficina de paletes dentro das fábricas garantindo um melhor processo de triagem de paletes que contribuiu para a redução do tempo de parada das linhas produtivas por problemas de paletes fora de padrão operacional.

The Estates at Acqualina located in Sunny Isles Beach, FL, is comprised of two, ocean-front, 50-story, luxury towers with podiums and villas. With city regulations now requesting that above-grade floors be limited to commercial or residential units, parking facilities for the tower structures were situated within two levels of underground basement parking. However, ensuring dry excavation through south Florida’s highly pervious limestone, immediately adjacent to the beach where the groundwater table is very shallow, can be extremely challenging and costly for developers. In recent years, significant advances have been made to overcome this challenge with the innovative use of deep soil mixing to create a “dry hole”, assisting in the construction of foundations and underground usable space for parking, storage, etc. The “dry hole” system includes a soil mix bottom seal, with soil mix secant pile walls in combination with auger cast deep foundation elements to support the future structure. This approach enables groundwater control to greater depths than can be achieved by conventional sheetpiling and dewatering. For the Estates at Acqualina, a successful turnkey, design-build joint venture between two foundation and geotechnical contractors resulted in a dry excavation to 34 ft (10.4 m) below grade and to a record- breaking auger cast pile depth of 182.3ft (55.6 m), all within an aggressive 26-week schedule to deliver the “dry hole” excavation for the first tower. This presentation will discuss the logistics, quality control, design, and safety for the different techniques involved. INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND The Estates of Acqualina is a pair of 50-story luxury towers located on Sunny Isles Beach in Florida with a two-level underground basement for parking. The project’s location just steps away from the Atlantic Ocean, geology, and high-water table created a challenging project. The owner, Trump Group, contracted the joint venture of HJ Foundation and Hayward Baker (HJ/HB) to design-assist-build a system to control the groundwater, allowing the 2-story underground parking structure to be constructed. In order to accomplish this task, the JV utilized an installation technique known as deep soil mixing. This technique mixes the in situ material with a cement slurry to create a very impermeable material called “soilcrete”.

As elevadas taxas de encruamento nos estágios iniciais de deformação plástica observadas para os aços bifásicos constituem uma das principais características que os habilita para aplicação em componentes estruturais na indústria de automóveis. Neste trabalho foi analisada influência de tratamentos intercríticos com aquecimento em temperaturas diversas, seguido de resfriamento brusco, no comportamento em termos de encruamento de um aço bifásico, por meio de dois métodos distintos de determinação do expoente de encruamento. Observou-se que a elevação da temperatura intercrítica influenciou de modo a reduzir o valor do expoente de encruamento, dado que o aumento da temperatura reflete a elevação do percentual de martensita na microestrutura do aço. Além disso, para as diferentes abordagens aplicadas para o cálculo dos valores de n, verificou-se que por meio da técnica de linearização da curva tensão versus deformação foram obtidos valores superiores do expoente de encruamento quando comparada à abordagem utilizando o critério da estricção.

"The Olserum deposit located in Sweden hosts an indicated mineral resource of 4.5 million tonnes over 0.6 % TREO, exhibiting a relatively high proportion of HREE. Beneficiation of a composite drill core sample was studied in the flowsheet of magnetic separation of magnetite followed by REE minerals flotation. Primary testwork was performed to select an effective REE mineral collector and then the parameters of grinding size, collector and depressant dosages, slurry pH and density, conditioning time and temperature, and flotation time were tested for optimization of REE flotation. The studies of process mineralogy showed that the REE-bearing minerals monazite, xenotime and apatite were successfully enriched from the concentrations of 0.6%, 0.31% and 2.6% in the feed to those of 17.0%, 8.9% and 65.0% in the concentrate with the recoveries of 79.0%, 81.3% and 71.0%, respectively. INTRODUCTION The Olserum deposit located in Sweden comprises lower grade placer material with higher grade apatite-magnetite veins and hosts an indicated mineral resource of 4.5 million tonnes at 0.6% TREO, with 34% of that being HREO (EURARE, 2017). The mineralization was studied by Andersson et al. (2018). At early stage, high-temperature REE is characterized by abundant monazite-(Ce) and xenotime-(Y) coexisting with fluorapatite and subordinate amounts of (Y,REE,U,Fe)-(Nb,Ta) oxides. During a subsequent stage, allanite-(Ce) and ferriallanite-(Ce) formed locally, partly resulting from the breakdown of primary monazite-(Ce). Alteration of allanite-(Ce) or ferriallanite-(Ce) to bastnäsite-(Ce) and minor synchysite-(Ce) at lower temperatures represents the latest stage of REE mineral formation. The mineralogy and beneficiation were firstly studied by GTK Mintec in the EURARE project for a composite drill core sample. The Olserum is considerably smaller than the Norra Kärr deposit. However, REE are hosted by xenotime and monazite, both of which have well established processing pathways, and meanwhile, the Olserum has a high contribution of the high value critical REE (dysprosium (Dy), yttrium (Y), neodymium (Nd) and terbium (Tb)), which provide a unique advantage for its exploration (Tasman Metals Ltd., 2013). In this paper, flotation of the REE minerals in the Olserum ore was studied."

Introduction Ground failure, violent or otherwise, is a problem to be contended with wherever underground operations are carried out. The character and extent of the failure, whether superficial or of more serious proportions, is determined by a number of factors, among which might be mentioned: the depth and dimensions of the underground workings; the types and distribution of wall rocks; structural features of the ore and enclosing rocks; the degree of metamorphism; the dip of the orebody; concentration of mining operations; the rate of mining; the history of the excavations made on the orebody in question. This last factor implies the consideration of such points as the arrangement and distribution of stoping both past and present, the current sequence of scoping, the type and effectiveness of the support used in old and current workings, and the amount and distribution of unmined parts of the lode. With such a variety of conditions, it is only natural that the situation at one place in a mine will not be the same as that obtaining in another part of the same mine and, more than likely, will be quite different in another property.

It is well known that the bearing capacity and stiffness of displacement piles may increase significantly with time, a phenomenon usually referred to as set-up. In cohesive soils the set-up is commonly explained by consolidation processes in which the dissipation of the excess pore pressures around the pile leads to an increase in effective radial stresses. Recent case histories show that set-up may also occur in sand over a period which exceeds by far the consolidation process. Therefore, other effects apart from the dissipation of excess pore pressures must contribute to this long-term set-up effect. This paper presents the results of a series of multiple pile load tests on prefabricated concrete piles which capture the effect of pile set-up empirically. The main characteristics of the set-up trend are shown with respect to soil type, pile dimensions and distribution over the pile length. Possible reasons for pile set-up like consolidation and stress relaxation after the end of driving are examined using a finite element model which simulates the pile installation process.

Os pós fluxantes têm como base o sistema CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-Na2O-CaF2 sendo que, em alguns casos, podem conter também MgO, Li2O, K2O e B2O3. Os resíduos de mármore e granito, oriundos dos processos de produção de rochas ornamentais, são passivos ambientais na região sudeste, sobretudo no estado do Espírito Santo. As composições destes resíduos são similares a dos pós fluxantes utilizados nos processos de lingotamento contínuo e portanto serão utilizados neste trabalho para formulação de novos fluxantes. Uma mistura de granito, pó de mármore e adições foi realizada com o objetivo de produzir um fluxante similar aos comerciais encontrados no mercado. O novo fluxante foi caracterizado por difração de Raios X antes e depois de passar pelo teste de susceptibilidade de formação de fases cristalinas ou “teste de Stollberg” modificado. Os resultados mostraram que existe a formação de fases similares às observadas em fluxantes comerciais. Avanços nesta área podem viabilizar economia de matéria-prima e a diminuição do impacto ambiental causado pelo mercado de rochas.

A 4-component model for settling slurry pipe flow has been previously described by Wilson et al (2006) and Sellgren et al (2014) to predict pipeline friction loss (hydraulic pressure gradient) over a range of slurry compositions: from fine to coarse particle size, narrow to broad particle size distribution, and low to high solids concentration. The method applies a weighted average of established pipeline models for various settling slurry flow regimes, according to the volume fraction of solids falling within the applicable size range for each model. Further development of the model was undertaken by Visintainer et al (2017a, 2017b), based on a comprehensive set of laboratory tests in 203 mm (8 inch) and 103 mm (4 inch) pipelines, and it was also adapted to the modelling of slurry pump performance derates. However, this work was all performed with solids having a specific gravity near 2.65, as is typical for many mineral processing and dredging applications. The goal of the present work is to test the applicability of these models for settling slurries having a higher solids specific gravity, as may often be seen in the mineral processing of iron ore deposits. To that end, a test program was carried out in a 103 mm (4 inch) pipe loop using various compositions of an iron ore product having a solids specific gravity of 4.75 and containing both coarse and fine solids. By screening and flushing operations, a range of particle size distributions were created having different proportions of the coarse and fine elements. In all, 19 tests were performed with d50 particle sizes ranging from 50 μm to 3.2 mm and delivered solids concentrations from 10 per cent to 43 per cent by volume. Particle size distributions varied from very narrow to very broad, with d85/d50 ratios ranging from 1.75 to 26. Pipeline pressure gradient and pump performance data were collected and used to test the applicability of the previously developed 4- component models and to propose improvements to the models for the handling of high-density solids.

A corrosão é definida como sendo um conjunto de fenômenos de deterioração dos materiais em consequência de reações entre o material e o meio. Em instalações metálicas, tais processos são monitorados através de cupons de perda de massa. Quando o ataque se evidencia pela formação de cavidades com pouca perda uniforme, ele é denominado corrosão por pites. As empresas de monitoramento de corrosão adquirem cupons de diferentes fornecedores, e pouco se observa quanto ao tipo de processamento durante a fabricação, a composição química, a microestrutura, entre outros parâmetros e o quanto, podem alterar a confiabilidade dos resultados. O presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar o desempenho de cupons aço carbono, relacionando a composição química, densidade de inclusões e pites de corrosão presente em cupons. Na caracterização foram envolvidas as análises química e microscópica. Os cupons foram ensaiados em loop de corrosão tendo como fluido a água potável. Para determinar a densidade, área e profundidade dos pites de corrosão foram adotados as normas NACERP0775 e ASTM G46-94. Foi observada uma relação direta entre o teor de enxofre e a densidade de inclusões e, consequentemente, entre a densidade de pites presente nos cupons, após ensaio em loop de corrosão.

THE production of titanium in 15-1b. lots and with a purity sufficient to be consolidated into ductile metal, as described in a previous paper,1 has provided adequate material for a study of the : physical properties of titanium and a more thorough examination of its working qualities. Data on the physical properties reported in that paper were obtained on metal fabricated by a fixed procedure, standardized for the purpose of control of the reduction, and are representative only of material fabricated under those conditions. There are many possible variables in the working schedule, which will have significant effects on the properties of the finished material; and since the previous working methods were not necessarily the best, an investigation of the fabrication of titanium by other methods was undertaken. In this work the consolidation of the powder by pressing and sintering was conducted essentially as outlined in the report cited' and all efforts were centered on fabrication methods for those powders and the properties produced by them. Hardness, density, microstructure, and tensile properties were determined at various stages in the working and annealing; and resistivity measurements were made on a few bars and drawn wire. [ ] CONSOLIDATION OF THE POWDER The screen analysis of the available titanium powder is given in Table I. No attempt was made to alter the size distribution from that noted because this powder, although coarse by normal powder-metallurgy standards, produced acceptable compacts suitable for the present work. Because of their large specific surface, finer powders are more contaminated by oxygen and produce harder compacts, which are difficult to work. The powder as produced is soft, compresses in a normal fashion, and exhibits very little tendency to adhere to the die surfaces. By 2025, the U.S. automotive industry will have to average 54.5 mpg (4.3l/100km) Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFÉ). While new/improved powertrain technology (turbocharging, electrification, diesels, transmissions and stop/start) will be critical, it is estimated that 25-40% of the new CAFÉ standards will require significant mass reduction, and lightweight structural materials will be required. This presentation examines vehicle mass reduction based on new developments in manufacturing automotive structures and components using light metals (aluminum and magnesium), conventional heavy metals (iron and steel), polymers, and carbon-fiber reinforced polymer composites. Components that used to be sand cast or pressure die cast provided minimal fatigue strength and ductility. But greater mass reduction uses more light metals in structural applications. They require eliminating porosity and inclusions to improve ductility and fatigue strength. Improved casting processing, with vacuum die casting, counter pressure and squeeze casting, and new forging and extrusion applications are being developed for this purpose. New grades of ultra-high strength steels can be made thinner, and save over 1/3 the mass vs conventional mild steels. But more complex and expensive processing, such as hot stamping and in-mold quenching, is required. Most engine block structures have migrated from grey cast iron to aluminum over the past 40 years. But compacted graphite cast iron has higher strength at high combustion temperatures and pressures so that high powered engines can be smaller and even lighter than aluminum. Assembling a range of lightweight materials into vehicle structures requires specialized assembly techniques, including sophisticated structural adhesives that can mitigate vehicles’ unique corrosion environment. The presentation will conclude with discussing lightweighting strategies of Asian, American and, European marques and the materials, component designs and assembly techniques used to achieve 2025 CAFÉ.

Foi implantado um software, PCT (Production Control Tool), de integração e coordenação do fluxo de dados entre os seguintes níveis de automação: nível 3, onde se encontram os dados de especificação do produto e sequenciamento de produção, e nível 2, onde se encontram os modelos matemáticos, resultados do processo, interface com medidores e rastreamento da produção. No processo de construção do PCT viu-se um grande potencial de desenvolver outras funcionalidades, devido enorme flexibilidade dessa ferramenta, como gerenciamento da produção, auxílio na inspeção de qualidade e controle estatístico do processo. Isto levou a criação de um sistema amigável de fácil utilização, utilizado tanto pelos operadores da Linha e inspetores de qualidade como também pelos analistas do processo, auxiliando na otimização da Linha de Tiras a Quente da Gerdau.

Gold miners have been underperforming the price of gold for a number of years. So why has the æmarketÆ undervalued our gold miners relative to what they have been mining? The low valuation ascribed to gold mining companies is largely attributable to their profit performance. In the period since 2006 the price of gold in A$ has risen about $900/oz, but the real cash margin (operating cash costs + cost of finding and/or acquiring deposits + the cost of bringing them into production) has only risen about A$100. Rising operating costs are a major part of this reduction in real margin. Energy and labour costs have risen more than the inflation rates across a number of countries as have taxes, royalties, etc. There are however, more significant contributors to the rising cost base. Firstly, in 2006 the average gold grade was 2.0 g/t; today it is 1.3 g/t. Secondly, strip ratios (for surface mines) have increased by 19 per cent during this time. Open cut mining equipment unit output across the world has dropped by 26 per cent during 2006 - 2012. Finally, costs have risen by 55 per cent during this time period. Consequently, there is now 3.8 times more mining cost required to produce an ounce of gold from surface mines compared with 2006. The decline in gold grade looks to be a permanent trend as does increasing strip ratio if output is to be maintained. Costs will continue to rise although cost control will be necessary. Reversing the decline in equipment performance and closing the gap between median and best practice provides the hope for a sustainable reversal of cost increases. The current gap between best practice and median performance has grown to 112 per cent for mining trucks, 168 per cent for excavators and 169 per cent for front end loaders. Closing this gap is the potential for a more profitable future. For most gold mining companies improving mining efficiency is not an option; it is an imperative.CITATION:Lumley, G, 2013. O cobre é um dos metais mais utilizados desde os primórdios da indústria, principalmente para a fabricação de fios e cabos para fins elétricos. Dentre as diversas propriedades do cobre, as mais importantes são: capacidade que o material tem de conduzir corrente elétrica e quantidade de energia utilizada para realizar o recozimento garantindo o alongamento especificado. Essas propriedades são diretamente influenciadas pelo teor de oxigênio adicionado como elemento de liga durante a fabricação do vergalhão de cobre eletrolítico. Neste contexto, o artigo tem o objetivo de apresentar como realizar o controle do oxigênio no processo de laminação e quais as influências desse elemento para diminuir os custos com energia elétrica, reduzir as quebras no processo de trefilação e aumentar a condutividade elétrica dos produtos de cobre.
