Most accidents are the result of risk taking. They can happen anywhere. Our coal industry categorizes accidents by type, occupation, commodity, age, every way you can imagine. We now know, how many were injured and when, for all the different types of accidents. We have ask ourselves many times, why are we having accidents, how can we stop the accidents and fatals in our industry? Present numbers and projections do not show that this will happen. Serious accidents can result in fatalities. Fatal accident can be prevented, and the coal industry can achieve zero fatalities. How soon this happens, depends on a great number of factors. I will discuss accidents and reasons for us having accidents in an attempt to get to the root causes. The historical perspective will be touched on, and the risk and analysis of accidents will be probed.

Although many SAG operators may agree that on-line measurement of SAG feed-size is an attractive notion, applying this information in a control strategy that recovers the investment, engineering time, and maintenance is not necessarily straightforward. The P. T. Freeport Split-Online system was justified based on the assumption that SAG feed-size could be used in a feed-forward control strategy either at the regulatory or expert system control level. Something like “as the feed size changes adjust the throughput to avoid under or overloading the mill” was envisioned. However, following installation and calibration, Cluster Analysis showed that such an approach would not be successful. However, the sensor has been successfully integrated into Freeport’s grinding control strategy other ways. It provides an input to the Kalman filter parameter estimator used in a model-based control strategy that optimizes throughput and grind. The Split sensor also provides a characteristic feed size parameter for use in an on-line work index estimator. This paper describes the calibration and installation of the Split SAG feed-size analyzer, and reviews the evolution of its use in the Freeport C3 grinding circuit control strategy.

This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States was made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the American Petroleum Institute and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. By agreement with the American Petroleum Institute, identification of the items is confidential. .It presents analytical data for 4, 457 samples, representing the products of 92 companies. The samples were collected by companies during June, July, and August 1956, As in previous surveys, the gasolines covered by this survey include those from both large and small suppliers. The data were obtained by laboratories of various refiners, motor manufacturers, and chemical companies and submitted to the Bureau of Mines for compilation. A list of the National Motor Gasoline Survey reports published during the past 10 years is on page 5.

he flotation studies on hematite were carried out using di (2-ethylhexyl) Phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as the collector. The possible mineral reagent interaction was studied through electrokinetic and dissolution studies. The shift in zeta potential (PZC) and decrease in dissolution of iron in the presence of D2EHPA indicated that D2EHPA was specifically adsorbed on hematite surface. The adsorption imparted necessary hydrophobicity for flotation of hematite. Hematite could be floated selectively from hematite and quartz synthetic mixture. Thank you, Syd, for the kind introduction and for inviting me to give the Keynote Address at this very prestigious gathering of some of the finest intellect and talent in the domestic and international coal industry. CONSOL Energy has been a part of this conference for its entire 24-year existence. We have presented 27 papers over that time. CONSOL employees have also been members of the planning committee for the conference, and we have been pleased to support the event both financially and with many participants. So I am honored to be here with all of you this morning, especially during such a positive period for coal. You can just feel the enthusiasm in this room for our industry, and for this conference. I can tell you, there?s also a lot of enthusiasm and excitement in CONSOL Energy?s boardroom. And our enthusiasm is mirrored on Wall Street. But there remains an ironic twist to all of this attention. Even when times are good, the coal industry seems to go largely unnoticed by the mainstream. Outside of West Virginia and other coal-producing regions, the industry still seems to lack influence and support, at least here in America. As an example, last month, an ABC News crew visited our Blacksville 2 Mine, near here, to do a feature story on increased employment in the coal industry.

The Midas epithermal system is one of the larger low-sulfidation epithermal vein systems discovered in the western US in recent years, containing in excess of 3 Moz of gold (premining). The deposit is spatially and temporally related to bimodal volcanism in the Northern Nevada Rift; dates on igneous rocks (16 - 14.7 Ma) bracket the age of high grade veins (15.3 Ma). Hydrothermal alteration at Midas is typical of epithermal systems, comprising proximal potassic through distal propylitic assemblages; in contrast to many epithermal systems, Midas has minimal development of wallrock illite/sericite. Mineral assemblages are clearly zoned on the vein structures that acted as focal planes for fluid upflow. Geochemical zoning patterns also show this zoning. Metals were deposited in open-space veins as the result of boiling of hydrothermal fluids; multiple episodes of crustiform mineral deposition are documented in the vein textures. The major vein minerals include quartz, adularia, calcite, selenides and sulfides, with electrum as the primary ore mineral. REE patterns for vein material are similar to patterns for coeval rhyolites, but distinctly different from patterns of the host rocks. Stable isotope data are consistent with meteoric water as the dominant ore fluid. Combined REE and stable isotope data suggest that fluid from which the main ore-bearing stage of the veins was deposited was slightly lower pH than other stages.

The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) requires that the transverse load capacity of stoppings be equal to or greater than traditionally accepted in mine controls, which for block stoppings is generally accepted as 39 psf as referenced in the preamble to the CFR standard. This measure is based on physical testing of a freestanding wall in accordance with ASTM E 72 specifications, where our past research has shown that the dominant parameter is the tensile strength of the sealant. A new protocol based on rigid arch loading of the structure is proposed to determine the true transverse load capacity of block stoppings. Arching is achieved by the restraint of the stopping against the mine roof and floor, whereby compressive forces are developed within the wall. A laboratory procedure using the NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator (MRS) to simulate rigid arching of block stoppings was developed and results verified through full-scale in-mine tests. The rigid arch tests have demonstrated transverse load capacities more than an order of magnitude higher than the ASTM E 72 evaluation method from which the 39-psf requirement is derived. More importantly, the rigid arch tests have shown that the load capability is dependent on the physical properties of the block and geometric properties of the wall and not the sealant.

A major spontaneous combustion incident occurred in the sealed goaf of the SL3 Panel; Southland Colliery in 2003 resulting in the loss of a longwall and sealing of the mine. The most important issue for the new owners, Yancoal Australia Pty. Ltd, was to effectively manage the atmosphere in the fire affected sealed area. This atmosphere comprised of flammable gases, the products of combustion and excessive levels of oxygen due to pressure differentials across the panel isolation seals with a potential ignition source associated with the residual spontaneous combustion event. The challenges were met in the first instance by the erection of pressure balance chambers with limited success. The problem was not solved until the pressure chambers were pressurized using a Floxal Nitrogen Plant supplied by Air Liquide Australia. Given the success of this approach on a small scale, a higher capacity Air Liquide Floxal Unit was acquired to manage spontaneous combustion at the recommencement of longwall mining operations. This provided the ability to pressurize pressure chambers that were installed in the Maingate Seals behind the face of the adjacent Longwall Block effectively preventing the ingress of oxygen and permitting the goaf to self inert in a reasonable time period. This paper summarizes a new proactive method of mitigating the risks associated with active and sealed goaves. Proactive management of these areas using low flow nitrogen into pressure chambers to maintain a positive pressure has eliminated typical reliance in explosion proof or explosion resistance seals as the primary control.

"The benthic environmental impact experiment addresses environmental impacts at a specific site related to deep-sea mineral resource development. For such a purpose, since 2010 we have carried out essential environmental research at both the BIS and a preservation site. We have acquired several tens multi- or box core samples at 32 sites within the BIS especially between 2011 and 2013, aiming to examine the basic properties of surficial deep-sea sediment as the potential source for deep-water plumes.In this study, we present physical the properties such as water content, shear strength and also geochemical properties such as major elements, rare earth elements (REEs), heavy metal contents at the BIS. Such proxies vary distinctly according to the Facies association. The lithology of all core sediments in the BIS corresponds to both Association Ib (Unit I/Unit II) and Association IIIb (Unit I/Unit III) on the basis of the KORDI classification (KORDI, 2004); Unit I is watery mud and dark grayish brown (10YR4/2) to dark brown (10YR4/3). Unit II is highly bioturbated mud and brownish yellow (10YR6/6). Unit III is very dark brown (10YR3/2) to black (10YR2/1) mud. Physical properties of these sediment types show that Association Ib is distinct from Association IIIb. The vertical profile of water content changed more sharply in Association IIIb probably due to compaction; water contents varied from 230 to 300% in Association Ib and changed from 200 to 250% in Association IIIb. The vertical profiles of shear strength are also quite different between Associations; the profile curve in Association IIb is much more gentle due to bioturbation."

Support of excavation (SOE) design practice tends to model SOE elements using two-dimensional (2D) analyses to avoid the complexity associated with three-dimensional (3D) analyses. Such practice overlooks soil arching in the horizontal plane and prevents designers from accounting for elements such as capping beams as part of the statical system. This study simulates square excavations supported by cantilever slurry walls in dry cohesionless soil using 2D and 3D finite element (FE) models. First, side support wall behavior is compared from 2D and 3D FE models for variable excavation length to depth (L/H) ratios. Second, the effect of slurry wall lateral bending stiffness on wall behavior is studied by modeling the wall using plate element with isotropic and anisotropic wall stiffness. Finally, the sensitivity of cantilever wall behavior to the presence of capping beam is illustrated. The study concludes that unbraced excavations with L/H ratios greater than 5 almost resemble plane-strain conditions. Slurry walls are better simulated in 3D FE models by dividing the plate element into discrete panels or by assigning anisotropic bending stiffness to the plate element. Finally, the presence of capping beam affects the behavior of cantilever walls resulting in reduction of deflections and redistribution of bending moments. INTRODCUTION Support of excavation (SOE) design practice ranges in complexity from conducting simple hand calculations to performing three dimensional numerical modeling depending on several factors among which is the geometry of the design problem. This paper addresses walls that are designed using numerical modeling, and discusses the factors governing the choice of the most suitable modeling approach. It has been believed for a while that modeling excavations using 2D numerical models would lead to a more conservative solution, which turned out to be incorrect in specific cases. This paper attempts to describe cases where 2D finite element modeling could be on the conservative side and other cases where it could be less conservative than the more complex 3D modeling.

The initial Support Technology Optimization Program (STOP),Version 1.0, was released at the 19th Ground Control Conference. This original program has since been updated to Version 2.3 which was released in May, 2001. This paper describes the additional features of Version 2.3, focusing primarily on the following three aspects: (1) including uncontrolled convergence into the design requirements for standing roof supports, (2) the addition of design procedures for cable bolts as an alternative secondary roof support, and (3) the addition of new standing roof support technologies. Another new feature which should facilitate the development of design criteria for standing roof support is the capability to define ground reaction curves through convergence measurements alone without having to make support loading measurements. There are several other new features provided in Version 2.3 which are only briefly addressed in the paper. These include: (1) additional graphics capabilities to facilitate rapid assessment of support comparisons, (2)an East-West designation for support selection to more accurately provide cost and support availability data, (3) additional safety measures including a safety factor to identify support design near the peak support capacity, checks to see if the support dimensions comply with aspect ratio requirements, and a measure of roof coverage for the design layout of the support system. These new features of STOP provide more capabilities to design and analyze secondary roof support systems for conditions which could not be fully analyzed in the original version of the program.

In recent years piled raft foundations of multi-storey buildings on weak soils have generated much interest and discussion. By taking account of the effects of each component of the system - the pile group and the raft - it is possible to reduce the settlements and inclinations of the system and to have an expedient load distribution on the piles and the raft. Thus the structural design of the foundation can be optimised.

The complex heterogeneous equilibria associated with the production of manganese ferroalloys have been simulated by employing recently developed thermochemical databases. The non-ideal Mn-Fe-Si-C alloy and the MnO-SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-MgO-FeO slag system have been modelled separately by the compound energy and cellular model. A large number of experimental thermodynamic and phase-equilibrium data were used to evaluate the model parameters for the liquid and solid Mn-Fe-Si-C phases. In addition to the liquid metal phase, solid mixture phases occurring in the Mn-Fe-Si-C system have also been studied. Over 500 measured equilibrium data have been utilised to verify and calibrate the model calculations. The paper will present typical simulation results, from activities of components to multicomponent heterogeneous equilibria. Good agreements can be obtained for many important technological parameters such as carbon solubility, phase relations and equilibrium diagrams, element distribution as function of temperature and slag composition etc. Application of the present models to the silicomanganese production will be demonstrated in this paper.

Present methods of roof support require that first a hole must be drilled, and then a toggle belt or grouted resin bolt be set. Automating this system is very difficult. Therefore, we decided to develop a system which would insert pins into the roof in one step. We think that this type of system can be automated much easier. It would then speed up the roof bolting operation and eliminate the need for a man to work under unsupported roof, making roof bolting a much safer job. There are two ways that a pin can be inserted in a mine roof without drilling a hole. It can either be pushed in, using a very high, constant axial force; or it can be hammered in like a nail. The former method involves very high compressive stresses in the pin, and requires complicated machinery to prevent buckling. Since hammering the pin does not require high axial forces buckling is not as likely. Also, experiments have shown that there are no problems associated with getting the pin to go in straight. We chose to develop the second method. While investigating methods for hammering a pin into a mine roof, we learned that piles were being driven 10 times faster than by conventional methods with a method called "orboresonance." We decided to turn the pile driver upside down, and drive pins up into the mine roof. Sonic Pin Setting Machine The machine consists of a steel bar supported at the nodal points of its first mode of transverse vibration (Fig. 1). A mechanical oscillator, driven by a hydraulic motor, is attached to one end of the bar. This provides the forcing function for the vibrations in the bar. The hydraulic power is supplied by a portable unit. When the forcing function is near the natural frequency of the bar, large amplitudes of vibration occur and require little power input. An anvil is attached to the bar at a point of maximum deflection, providing a means for striking the pin. Since the bar is being driven near its natural frequency, it takes little energy to accelerate the bar back and forth between each hit. This means that most of the power being put into the bar is going into driving the pin. This is unlike conventional pile drivers which use most of their power to accelerate the hammer back and forth between hits. The resonant frequency of the bar we used is about 250 Hz, which is in the audible range, hence the term "sonic pin setting machine." The system benefits are: (1) elimination of the two-step drilling and pin-setting roof bolt operation, (2) increased speed, (3) more intimate contact between the formation and bolts, (4) less expensive roof bolts, (5) higher integrity, (6) potential for automatic operation. Modifications During the months from Oct. to Dec. 12, 1974, under U.S. Bureau of Mines grant No. 00144104, "Projects on Coal Extraction," six members of the senior class at Carnegie Mellon University designed and built the experimental machine. They drove three pins into the Safety Research coal mine at Bruceton, Pa., and determined that the project was worth continuing. In January 1975 we began making modifications and repairs in preparation for a more extensive program of testing at Bruceton. The major items were: 1) Design and build a collapsible pin guide to keep the pin parallel with the line of travel of the lift table. 2) Move the anvil to the center of the bar. 3) Refinish the nodal holes and install new node pins and bushings. 4) Realign the bar in its frame. 5) Install a relief valve on the lift unit to control the upward force. The upward force that we exert on the pin is relatively small, so there is no tendency for it to buckle. This means that all we need to do is hold the pin straight during its initial penetration. A passive acoustic emission (AE) monitoring system has been developed and trialled on two M10000 IsaMillsTM. The analyser detects AE stress waves generated by grinding media impacts with the mill liner during mill operation. Locally propagating stress waves can be detected on the exterior liner surface using strategically mounted broadband accelerometers.The analyser has been developed into a robust commercial prototype system, and has been designed, installed and commissioned with Xstrata Technology at two mineral processing plants.A six-month field trial showed large-scale variation in AE power signature with process conditions. Analysis of the enveloped AE power output demonstrated a strong correlation with mill process conditions – more specifically grinding media relative loading, feed pulp density, feed volumetric flow rate and feed type.Placement of accelerometers along the length of the mill body provided key information on the grinding media relative deportment. The enveloped AE power detected by the mill body, discharge pipe and bearing housing sensors all captured information strongly correlated with mill operating parameters and process state.The prototype analyser demonstrates suitability as a long-term online tool for stirred mill performance monitoring, and potentially for optimisation and control, in beneficiation plants.CITATION:Jackson, C A, Spencer, S J, Masters, J, Sharp, V, McEwan, A, Rainey, S, Catanzano, A, Roberts, G and Millen, M, 2014. Roof falls are one of the greatest hazards in underground coal mines worldwide. Due to stringent safety measures and extensive support system development, roof falls have been reduced significantly but they still persist in many underground coal mines. Some of the roof falls initiate with cutter roof or guttering. In the past, many factors have been identified as being responsible for the development of cutters and roof fall. These responsible factors can be broadly classified as stress related or non-stress related. In this paper the finer details of mining technique have been taken into consideration for better understanding of cutter roof and roof fall problems. Three dimensional finite difference modeling has been used to explain the mechanism of cutter development. Strain softening material behavior has been used to realistically simulate the cutter formation, and common cutting sequences as implemented in the field have been simulated. This was done with an objective to determine whether the cutting sequence has really any significant control over cutter formation or not. In addition to cutting sequences, the effect of cut length is also studied. The effect of step cutting and turning of crosscut into and away from major and minor horizontal stresses is also examined to see its influence on cutter development.

Kapowai Caldera Complex (KCC), located 10 km west of Tairua (eastern Coromandel Peninsula), is a late Miocene composite collapse caldera, formed during eruption of several small and large volume andesitic rhyolitic ignimbrites. Numerous epithermal Au-Ag mineral deposits and associated alteration zones at the KCC are related to caldera (rhyolite lava domes, intracaldera faults) or regional structures (faults). The main epithermal deposit exposed in the central KCC is associated with an E-W striking structural boundary fault that cuts the Welcome Jack rhyolite dome. Propylitic (calcite - chlorite) and sericitic (quartz - sericite) alteration haloes surround this deposit. Sporadic zones of sericitic alteration are also exposed within and on the margins of the Bulls Run rhyolite dome complex. Epithermal systems post-dated emplacement of these rhyolite domes, but were controlled by them. Propylitic alteration of ignimbrite in the floor of the Kapowai and Kauaeranga valleys is related to the major NE-trending Kapowai Fault which extends SW to south of Thames. Alteration along this fault pre-dates alteration associated with the rhyolite lava domes. Numerous sericitic and propylitic altered welded ignimbrite, rhyolite and andesite lava lithic fragments have been sampled from intracaldera ignimbrites, and although no direct source is known, they infer the presence of buried epithermal systems. Repeated epithermal activity at the KCC is inferred by the exposed epithermal deposits/alteration zones and the older buried geothermal systems. Silicic caldera volcanoes are considered to be critical volcanic environments for epithermal Au-Ag mineralisation in Coromandel, but are highly variable and need detailed stratigraphic, structural, petrologic, and geophysical studies to characterise them.
