"As part of the Namew Lake project a mill was constructed to treat 1900 tpd of ore grading approximately 0.90% CU and 2.45% Ni to produce copper and nickel concentrates.Nickel occurs mainly as pentlandite and violarite while copper occurs as chalcopyrite. Two main ore types are present1 lower grade disseminated sulphides in a talcose ultramafic gangue and a higher grade solid sulfide with a granitic breccia matrix.Primary crushed ore from underground is treated on surface in a conventional closed circuit crushing plant using 2-stage cone crushing. Crushed ore is conveyed to storage and then fed at a controlled rate to a grinding circuit employing a rod and ball mill with hydrocyclone classification. Rougher flotation separates and cleans nickel and copper sulfides from waste materials followed by a high lime separation circuit to separate the minerals into final concentrates. Dewatering is achieved through use of high capacity thickeners and pressure filters prior to delivery to a loadout area. The crushing and milling control is highly automated.Plant design was based on metallurgical samples obtained from drill cores. After the first year of operations, plant results compared favourably with design projections.INTRODUCTIONThe Namew Lake Project is a joint venture partnership between Outokumpu Mines Ltd. (Canada) and Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company Ltd. (60%). The project included construction of a mine and milling complex to treat approximately 500,000 tonnes per year of copper-nickel ore grading o.91% and 2.44% Ni. Known reserves are estimated at 2. 65 million tonnes. The deposit is located approximately 65 km south of Flin Flon (120 km by road) and about 5 km east of the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border. The decision to construct a concentrating facility was made June 15, 1987 and construction started a week later. The facility, designed for 1900 tonne per day throughput, was ready for commissioning in September 1988. Outokumpu Engineering of Finland was chosen to prepare metallurgical flowsheets, select and develop plant layouts, and provide construction management. Kilborn (Toronto) contributed detailed engineering for civil, structural, mechanical and electrical components and outokumpu Equipment of Canada, the design, the supply, and commissioning of the instrumentation package. Hudson Bay undertook the initial metallurgical test work and preliminary design work."

"Vale’s Ontario Operations re-introduced Cu/Ni separation at Clarabelle Mill in 2006. The mill processes ores from a number of mines in the Sudbury basin. A saleable Cu concentrate is produced at 30-60% Cu recovery from mill feed, which has to meet the quality specification. In particular, Ni content in Cu concentrate must be less than 0.6%, otherwise, penalties will apply and diminish the value of Cu concentrate, in addition to the lost Ni value. Generally, a Ni grade of less than 0.4% is obtained in Cu concentrate. More recently, while processing Cu-rich ore, Cu concentrate contained more than 0.6% Ni which is abnormally high. Detailed mineralogical investigation shows that Cu-rich ore contains more millerite in comparison to typical Sudbury Ni sulphide ore. Millerite is found to be more floatable than pentlandite and is much more difficult to depress using high-lime aeration conditioning, which is the standard practice in Cu/Ni separation to float chalcopyrite while depressing pentlandite. The current operation uses sodium cyanide at 20 g/t to depress pentlandite and pyrrhotite. However, it is found that a high dosage is required to depress millerite. It is also shown that starch and dextrin are promising in millerite depression.INTRODUCTIONPrior to bulk smelting in 1991, Cu/Ni separation was carried out at Vale’s Copper Cliff Mill, Ontario Operation. The typical Cu concentrate grade was around 30% Cu and 1% Ni. This is very high in comparison to today’s value of 0.4% Ni and would not be acceptable for external processing. However, the Cu concentrate was processed internally at the Copper Cliff smelter/refinery, so the Ni contained in Cu concentrate was not lost and no actual penalties applied. During the SO2 abatement initiative, bulk smelting was chosen because of the perceived simplicity and consequently, Cu/Ni separation was eliminated (Agar, 1991) and the Copper Cliff mill was subsequently demolished. In 2005 and after more than one decade of bulk smelting, business changes required the removal of some Cu concentrate from Clarabelle Mill bulk concentrate to provide smelter capacity for Voisey’s Bay concentrate in the Copper Cliff smelter. In essence, this strategy calls for Cu removal at Clarabelle Mill (Lawson, 2006). In this case, Cu concentrate is sold externally and it must meet the quality requirement of less than 0.6% Ni."

The program to increase production at Sherritt Gordon's Lynn Lake property, which began in 1956, included increasing the rope speed and the horsepower of the ore hoist at the "A" shaft. Because of the limited power sup-ply from the two 7,000-hp. hydroelectric plants, and the ? 3,600 hp. predicted for the combined hoisting requirements of the three production shafts, it was considered desirable to lessen the impact of this type of load on the relatively small power system by equipping all future hoisting arrangements with Ward Leonard direct-current drives. The manually operated 8-by 4-ft. hoist at the "A" shaft had a rope speed of 1000 f.p.m., and was driven by a 385-hp., 380-r.p.m. wound rotor motor with liquid rheostat control. This A.C. drive was replaced by a semi-automatic Ward Leonard direct-current drive with a 515-hp., 566-r.p.m., shunt wound motor, providing a rope speed of 1,500 f.p.m. During several months preceding the con-version, all possible preparations were carried out to keep the changeover period to a minimum, and this resulted in a total shutdown time of twelve days. The capability of the "A" Shaft hoist was increased from 109 tons per hour to 134 tons per hour, and both mechanical and electrical maintenance were reduced considerably. The total cost of the conversion amounted to $130,000. The hoistmen who had been required for the manual A.C. drive were transferred to the new Farley shaft, and the reduction in operating labour costs of the "A" Shaft hoist

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the application of a spark-source mass spectrograph equipped with a spinning-electrode system for the study of various high-molecular-weight materials derived from coal. Conclusions from the investigation of anthracene, phenanthrene, chrysene, coronene, truxene, a coal-tar pitch (800 to 850 C softening point), and anthracene-chrysene synthetic mixtures follow: 1. Simplified mass spectra of anthracene, phenanthrene, chrysene, coronene, and truxene, from which the molecular weights were easily determined, were obtained by the spinning-electrode system. 2. Eight structural types having molecular weights from 178 to 252 corresponding to compounds previously observed in an electron impact mass spectrum of a coal-tar pitch sample were affirmed by this technique. 3. Mass spectra obtained from synthetic mixtures of anthracene and chrysene demonstrated that the technique is applicable for semiquantitative analysis.

Platinum-group minerals (PGM) are recorded from a number of localities along theWaiau River, western Southland, and the south coast of the South Island, New Zealand. At each locality, small amounts of PGMs were recovered as by-products of historical gold mining operations. During the period 1890-1950 an estimated 1000-2000 oz. of æplatinumÆ were recovered from the region, the only area within New Zealand where PGM have been commercially exploited. The PGM suite of southern New Zealand consists of Pt-Fe alloys, IPGE (iridium subgroup, platinum-group elements) alloys, sperrylite (PtAs2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite ((Pt,Pd)S). The composition of Pt-Fe alloy exhibits considerable variation and two compositional populations are recognised. Some Pt-Fe alloy grains are chemically zoned. Iridium is the most abundant IPGE alloy phase and often contains considerable Pt, in contrast to osmium and ruthenium alloys. Cooperite and braggite grains are characterised by extremely low concentrations of Ni.   Exsolution of osmium and iridium from Pt-Fe alloy and Pt-Fe alloy from iridium is observed Several PGM host mineral inclusions which vary from single to poly-phase, display rounded to equant outlines and range in diameter from greater than 100 ¦m to less than 5 ¦m. Olivine and Ni-sulphide inclusions are only present within IPGE alloys. Pt-Fe alloy, cooperite, braggite and sperrylite host Cu-Fe sulphides, a wide variety of PGM, clinopyroxene, amphibole, magnetite and plagioclase within inclusions. Sperrylite also hosts Pd bismuthiotellurides, gold and several potassium-rich silicate phases. Similarities in inclusion phases and mineral chemistry from several localities suggest that the PGM are derived from a single (as yet unidentified), probably calc-alkaline magmatic source. This source is situated somewhere along the margins of the western Southland sedimentary basin where PGM liberated by erosion are transported down the Waiau River and dispersed eastwards along the coast by strong longshore currents.

"Xstrata Nickel’s Raglan operation, northern Québec, achieved paymetal recovery gains in 2007 by switching the collector from potassium amyl xanthate to sodium isobutyl xanthate. To follow on from that position, Xstrata Process Support (XPS) and A. Di Feo of Raglan proposed that a mixed xanthate system be formulated and tested towards further performance gains. This work selected ethyl and isobutyl xanthates as the candidates. An optimized ratio of these was to be determined by a designed experiment. This suggestion was based on an abundance of published literature that reported mixed collector systems outperformed single ones. A partial factorial design was used to configure four test conditions and a mid-square for the flotation work. The testwork was conducted using High Confidence Flotation Testing. The raw data were analyzed and modelled by Design-Expert software. An optimum ratio of 1.6:1.0 by mass (1.32:1.0 in molar terms) of isobutyl:ethyl xanthate was determined. Without this modelling, the optimum ratio would have been missed. Results obtained with the new baseline flotation test using this optimized mixture showed a 3.3% Ni recovery gain in the bypass concentrate and more than 1% recovery gain for PGM over the single PIBX system. This system has been proposed for and accepted as a plant scale trial in the first half of 2010.INTRODUCTIONConcentrator OperationsMilling and flotation of sulphide ores ahead of smelting and refining is a common practice. High Pressure Sulfuric Acid/Oxygen Leaching of Platinum Group Metals Bearing Ni-Cu Mattes The processing of platinum bearing Ni-Cu ores for the extraction of platinum group metals (PGMs) involves comminution, flotation, smelting, and converter treatment of the furnace matte. Leaching circuits are predominantly used for further processing to separate the base metals and PGMs contained in the converter matte. Nickel dissolution is primarily achieved in the first stage leach (high pressure or atmospheric leaching, or a combination of the two), which is followed by second stage high pressure sulphuric acid/oxygen leaching to dissolve copper and the remaining nickel. PGMs are recovered from the leaching residue in downstream processes, and their dissolution in the first two leaching stages must hence be limited. Studies have been conducted to investigate the leaching mechanisms and kinetics of base metals in different leaching environments. The key operating parameters that influence the leaching kinetics of these metals include the temperature, acid concentration, degree of agitation, feed particle size distribution, and oxygen partial pressure. There is, however, a limited understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in the high pressure leaching process. Consequently, this process is controlled based on operators' intuition despite its importance in the recovery of PGMs. An improved fundamental understanding of the behaviour of PGMs in this leaching environment is required to be able to accurately model the process. This in turn will allow the development of an improved control strategy and the estimation of optimum operating conditions. An overview of the leaching mechanisms of base metals and the effects of key operating parameters on their dissolution kinetics in different leaching environments are presented. Models that have been developed to predict the leaching behaviour of base metals are discussed and evaluated. Finally, initial results obtained with an experimental setup that will be used to investigate the behaviour of PGMs in high pressure leaching systems are discussed and compared with published results.

The cadmium and cyanide are main poisonous components in cyanide electroplating cadmium waste water of an electroplating plant in Shenyang. The content of cadmium is about 26 mg/L and the content of cyanide is about 11.782 mg/L in this waste water. The main form of cadmium and cyanide are ions which are Cd2+and CN?. Because the cadmium and cyanide exceeded the standard seriously, the waste water must be disposed before it discharges. The microbiological method of treating heavy metals in wastewater has many advantages. For example, it has a fast adsorption velocity, high processing efficiency, wide range of pH and temperature, few invest, low running cost, no the second pollution and so on. At the same time, the CN? could be degradated by some microbiology. The physical nature, the chemical nature of Bacillus mucilaginosus, the adsorbing condition and adsorbing regular of Bacillus mucilaginosus to cadmium in the wastewater are studied by using Bacillus mucilaginosus as adsorbent removing cadmium from electroplating wastewater. The experimental results show that the adsorbing rate of cadmium is over 92%, under the room temperature(about 25?), stiring revolution in adsorption being 800 r/min for 30 min, pH being 5 , the bacteria being cultured after 5d with the biomass of Bacillus mucilaginosus 40g/L (wet weight). The mechanism in biosorption process of Bacillus mucilaginosus to cadmium is analyzed and discussed by TEM , Zeta potential,and infrared spectroscopy analysis. The results showed, the chemical involving is main adsorbing form, while electrostatic attraction, ions exchange, hydrogen bonding and Van Der Waals force are concerned cooperatively. ?NH2 ?, ?C=O?, ?C=O?NH?CH2, ?CH3, ?OH are main adsorbing groups. At the same time, the floatablity of removing cyanide by Bacillus mucilaginosus is explored.

This paper presents the design and construction of a multi-channel geophone array that improves tomographic imaging capabilities in both surface and underground mines. Especially important in the design of the array is sensor placement. Three issues related to sensor placement are addressed in this paper: 1) sensor placement in long, horizontal boreholes, 2) development of simple, robust, MSHA-acceptable clamping unit, and 3) orientation of the geophones within the borehole. Improved imaging capabilities will produce energy, environmental, and economic benefits by increasing exploration accuracy and reducing operating costs.

It is important to study the ventilation system in order to better design and control of the working environment in deep underground mines. With increasing depth, heat, and humidity performance may be reduced and impair the attention of workers. The purpose of this paper is to apply a complex; development-end model configured in the MULTIFLUX program, developed at the University of Nevada, Reno, USA. The MULTIFLUX development-end model template has been benchmarked against measurement results from two UK coal mines in previous studies. The present study is a test of MULTIFLUX application in a metal mine. The model incorporates the simulation of the air flow field in the drift and the auxiliary air duct; simultaneous heat and humidity transport from the drift wall; heat and mass exchange between the air in the drift and the ducts; and the evaporation of process water and/or condensation of vapor as governed by the psychometric conditions. The results are compared with field data, measured at the Lucky Friday Mine (LF) in Idaho, USA, an underground mine and also shown between the results from the MULTIFLUX-based model, and those from another program, Kduct, developed at the Kyushu University in Japan.. The metamorphic terrane of southwestern India is a geological environment containing ilmenite source-rocks, transport drainage systems, and resultant beach sand deposits that contain altered ilmenites greater than 60wt% TiO2. As such, this environment provides a geological laboratory, from source to deposit, for the investigation of ilmenite origin, alteration, and geochemical character. Ilmenite samples from potential source rocks, river sands, and beach sands all show degrees of alteration and a variety of alteration textures (iron leaching) producing leucoxene (here defined as >70 <90wt% TiO2) and progressing to rutile (here defined as >90wt% TiO2). Distinct alteration textures are specific to different source rocks and are used together with trace element geochemistry as provenance criteria. Ilmenites are classified on the basis of their trace element content. In India, the ilmenites are classified principally according to the Mg, Nb, and Mn content and this signature defines potential source rocks, even where the ilmenite is altered to a TiO2 content of 70wt%. The trace element data may fingerprint source rocks whose ilmenite is more prone to iron leaching and that criterion has application in exploration for higher-grade ilmenites.

Ball mills are commonly used for regrinding operations in the mineral processing industry. But, in recent times, efforts are being made at the introduction of stirred mills particularly for those instances where very fine grinding is required. Media type (steel shot, glass beads, alumina balls and crushed quartz), media size, mill speed and the number of passes required to obtained the target product size are studied. The product size and energy consumption are used in the evaluation of the test results. The grinding media size, shape, density, filling ratio, mill circumferential speed and grinding time play a distinct role in product size fineness.

Material transport plays a significant role in the efficiency of horizontal grinding mills - autogenous (AG)/semi-autogenous (SAG)/ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a greenfield milling operation at Mirabela MineratpoÆs SantaRita Nickel operation located in north eastern Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 Mt/a (575 t/h) to produce a P80 of 125 ¦m with ten to 12 per cent ball charge in the SAG mill. However, it has been operating as an ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity was achieved in few days and was gradually increased to an average of +800 t/h, still operating in ABC mode. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30 ft + 15.4 ft 8.5 MW SAG mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPLÖ) in closed circuit with a HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20 ft + 28.4 ft 5.5 MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with a Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 + 26 in CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimisation and future development works. The southwest wall of the Lornex Pit at the Highland Valley Copper mine has been experiencing slope displacements since 1978. Measures to manage the displacements on previous pushbacks have included stepping out, scheduling pushbacks to unload the crest of unstable areas, slope dewatering and mining with intensive slope monitoring. The final pushback on this wall is currently being mined and substantial modifications to the slope geometry could prove to be uneconomical. As a result, a campaign of surface water collection and diversion, horizontal drainhole drilling and deep well drilling is currently underway to maintain an acceptable degree of stability to the end of mine life. The various factors contributing to instability, including engineering geologic controls, rock mass strength, and surface and groundwater hydrology are presented. Movement trends, displacement magnitudes and stability analyses results are also discussed.

REASONS FOR THIS CHAPTER Up to this point in the book the material presented has addressed the fundamental parameters associated with the evaluation of mining ventures and other investment alternatives. The procedures and techniques illustrated represent the basic approach to project evaluation, particularly when considering the normal engineering economic analysis of investment proposals. The evaluation procedure is complicated, however, when dealing specifically with mining-related investment proposals. These complicating factors are invariably directly related to the many special characteristics of the mining industry. Many of these special features such as tax policies, revenue and cost estimation, and ore reserves have been addressed in previous chapters. In addition to the many special features of mining which directly impact, in a quantitative manner, the various line items in the pro forma income statements of a cash flow analysis, other features of mining affect evaluation procedures in a more general manner. The main purpose of this chapter, then, is to provide an exposition of some of these more qualitative factors. We hope this will enable the reader to recognize these factors in mine evaluation practice and to make suitable adjustments in his or her analysis.

Beasley, the smelter superintendent, and his staff.INTR0DUCTI0NIt has been noted that the gases issuing from the top6 of the charges in the International Smelting Co.'s furnaces at Tooele, Utah, were very similar in composition to the gases from the top of the iron blast furnace, as they contained about 26 per cent of CO and 12 per cent of C02, the rest of the constituents being mainly nitrogen with a very little hydrogen and oxygen. It has been seen that where the column of coke was sufficiently high, the production of C0 gas to carry out the reduction of lead ores was accomplished in about the same manner as in a gas producer. In some cases, there was a little oxygen in the ""top gas"" -- usually not over a few tenths of a per cent, but at times amounting to several per cent. The presence of this gas was attributed to irregularities in operation that permitted air to come up through the tuybres to the surface without meeting any coke that was incandescent. Only a hundredth of a per cent or so of sulphurous oxides was present in the gases issuing from the top of the furnace."
