Examples are presented in which Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) was employed to locate deformation of rock masses induced by mining. The first example involved motoring the propagation of overburden fractures above a longwall coal panel and the second example involved the we of a)R to monitor rock mass deformation in the vicinity of a strip mine highwall. Bock mass deformation, strata separation and large block movement generated strains and failure along coaxial cables which were installed in drill holes and the TDR reflections generated by these strains and failures were monitored. Analysis of field data and a preliminary laboratory test indicate that it may be possible not only to locate rock mass movements but also to quantify these movements with TDR data.

"The Barro Branco coal mine was located in the southern region of Brazil, in the state of Santa Catarina. In 2002, an incident occurred at the mine, leading to a violent, massive pillar failure, resulting in almost 100 failed pillars in less than 3 hours, totaling nearly 700 collapsed pillars after a period of 6 weeks. The paper outlines the geological and operational conditions before the accident and analyzes the primary factors leading up to the event. This paper also discusses and examines the unusual characteristic of violent, uncontrolled pillar bursts that occur over a longer timespan, in comparison to other equally violent but rapid events, such as those that occurred at the Crandall Canyon Mine, at a Book Cliffs District mine, and at the Solvay Mine. INTRODUCTION The southern region of Brazil holds 100% of the coal reserves for the country, and half of it is located within the state of Santa Catarina. Almost the entire Brazil’s coal production, around 8 million tonnes/year, is consumed for electricity generation. Most of the coal mines in Santa Catarina are underground room-and-pillar mines, and most are shallow mines, with depths of cover ranging from 20 to 400 m. The Barro Branco mine, near the city of Criciuma, experienced a violent mine collapse at the end of March 2003, which was analyzed and discussed by Zingano, Koppe, and Costa (2004). The event consisted of violent failure of 100 pillars in less than 3 hours, and a subsequent failure of approximately 700 additional pillars over the next 6 weeks. After the panel collapsed, the mine was closed due to unsafe conditions as a consequence of the seismic event. A map of the collapsed area is shown in Figure 1. GEOLOGY AND MINING METHOD There are two coal seams mined at Barro Branco mine. The first is the 1.5 m to 2.3 m thick Barro Branco Seam, under about 75 m of cover. The second is the Bonito Seam, where the collapse occurred. The Bonito Seam is 2.5 to 5.5 m thick located at a depth of approximately 80 m, with an average dip of 0° to 15°. Various major faults and inherent joints are present in the area."

"INTRODUCTIONHydrogen sulphide is probably the most toxic gas associated with crude oil. Hydrocarbon (petroleum) vapors themselves are harmful to the human system, but hydrogen sulphide, when present, is usually more important from the standpoint of health and safety. These conclusions were reached in an investigation of the toxic gases encountered in the transportation end refining of high-sulphur petroleum. The results of that investigation are presented in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 23l. although the writers of Bulletin 231 paid no direct attention to the production of oil in the field, they attributed to hydrogen sulphide reports of accidents caused by gas in the oil fields of Mexico.During the development of oil fields in Texas, a ""poison gas"" was encountered that constituted a decided health and safety hazard. The present report discusses an investigation of this gas made in July, 1926.The major portion of the investigation was conducted in the Panhandle field of Texas, but the study also includes the Big Lake and McCamey fields.Scope of WorkThe work undertaken in each field included:Examination of the gas-coming from representative wells at various locations in the field; also analyses of the gas-air mixtures to which the workmen were or might be exposed.Observation of symptoms of poisoning and severity of these symptoms."

The use of fluid jets for industrial purposes has received considerable attention in recent years. The convening of The First International Symposium on Jet Cutting Technology1 in April 1972 devoted solely to this subject probably heralds the coming of age of this new science. It is interesting to note the emphasis in the conference towards the cutting of rocks, minerals, and soils, indicating the attention being devoted to excavation and mining. The use of water streams for mining of minerals is not new. It is well over a century since its first application.2 But its use in coal mining has been somewhat restricted over the years. In the past 30 years the U.S.S.R. has successfully used water for coal extraction, and these techniques have been examined in 15 countries in recent years. In the United States research on various aspects of the method has been conducted for over 15 years,3 but success stories from the Soviet Union,4 JapanS and Canada6 in the last 5 years has spurred greater enthusiasm. IIT Research Institute has done pioneering work in the 7-12 13-15 area of water jetting for rock and coal breakage. It has just completed an experimental study involving mining of coal with a 50,000-psi and 100,000-psi jet in a stripping operation14 under the sponsorhip of the U. S. Bureau of Mines (Contract No. HOll1789). As a complementary program the Bureau initiated a project to design a water-jet coal-mining machine (Contract No. H0133119). IITRI was a successful bidder on this competitive procurement.

Certain types of rock phosphates of sedimentary origin are applied to acidic soils as fertilizer directly. Recent research in India showed that high grade rock phosphate in fine size when used as a mix with organic manure works as efficiently as di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) in alkaline soils. The rock phosphate from Jhamarkotra, India (sedimentary origin), Egypt (sedimentary origin) and South Africa (volcanic origin) showed good agronomic efficiency when used as Phosphate Rich Organic Manure (PROM). Further PROM shows equal residual effect. The results of efficiency of PROM made using two grades (+ 24% P2O5 and 34% P2O5) of rock phosphate mineral from Jordan show that low grade rock phosphate slimes are as effective as high grade phosphate concentrate when used in PROM. Also PROM is very effective in the saline soil of Eshidiya desert where DAP is not at all effective.

FROM the time of its establishment in 1933, the Tennessee Valley Authority has been active in the field of phosphates. Under the T.V.A. Act it has a broad Congressional mandate to guide a unified development of the resources of the region for the long-range benefit of the people. As one phase of this function, it is directed to co-operate with farmers in the experimental large-scale use of improved fertilizers and development of better fertilizer practices. Following careful study, it was concluded that the objectives of this phase could best be attained by soil rebuilding through the use of phosphatic fertilizer and lime in an improved farm management sys- tem. This activity was launched through a program of test and demonstration on farms and simultaneous technical investigations to develop new and improved phosphatic fertilizers. Phosphorus has since become a keystone of the Authority's resource development and conservation program. Human effort is being conserved by phosphate utilization on the farm, and mineral conservation has been promoted by technical developments in phosphate mining and manufacturing operations.

Norway is a big producer of ferrosilicon and silicon metal. The raw material is quartz and quartzite and large quantities from both Norwegian and foreign sources are used. The demands maade on both the chemical purity and the thermomechanical qualities of the quartz/quartzite have increased in recent years in an attempt to reduce energy consumption and to improve utilization. Control of the chemical quality of the raw material is relatively easy by means of routine analysis, but it is more difficult to find a suitable method for testing the thermomechanical properties. A rapid test method to define high quality quartzite deposits for use in the metallurgical industry has been developed. The method is based on a combination of chemical analysis, dilatometry, thermosonimetry and cathodoluminiscence.

For more cost effective strata control, a fundamental understanding of the behavior of the support system is needed. To assist in this understanding for shield supports, behavior of a four-leg shield design used on a soft floor in an operating longwall system is presented. The shield was constructed having a split base and a split caving shield. Attention is focused on other-than-normal loading on the canopy and its effect on deformation of the lemniscate links. Examples of the typical bending and twisting deformations are given. Schematics of the canopy, caving shield, and lemniscates showing important forces and moments are presented. Approximate minimum values of the forces and moments are calculated. The need for use of more inclusive three-dimensional design techniques is demonstrated.

"A commercial program package called Crownoff for the simulation of temper rolling in four high mills has been verified against measured data. The agreement between measured and calculated transversal strain distributions of the strip was found to be good. Effects of the strip crown and work roll bending force on the strain distribution were simulated. The results showed that when a single ground camber of work rolls is used for all strip widths; the strip crown should be parabolic, excluding the edge drop. An increase or decrease of the strip crown by 30 % during a coil can be compensated by a 2 to 5 t change in the work roll bending force. The ability to control the strip crown by work roll bending was insensitive to strip width. IntroductionCold rolled steel strips are usually temper rolled after recrystallization annealing, which follows cold rolling. The purpose of temper rolling is to suppress the yield point, finish the strip surface and correct possible flatness errors. The presence of a yield point might otherwise cause problems during subsequent forming processes. The in homogenous yielding in non-temper rolled steels leads to the formation of Lüders bands in the strip surface.The rolling force is influenced by the rolling speed and changes in frictional conditions in the roll bite. Therefore it is very important to plan carefully the mill settings and control algorithms during rolling. The purpose of mill control algorithms is to ensure constant reduction and the best possible strip flatness during the entire coil.Correctly predicting the rolling force is important for determining the mill presettings. Torque, forward slip and power requirements are not usually critical, if the reductions are small. However, the large elastic deformations occurring in the roll bite make the physical description of the process difficult. Physical rolling models developed for cold rolling contain assumptions that lose their validity as the reductions decrease to the level of one per cent."

Backfill is increasingly used in underground mines, as it can help reduce the environmental impact from mining operations. However, the primary objective of backfilling is to provide safe working space for miners, by improving ground stability conditions. As cement is often added to the backfill, a critical issue is the determination of the required backfill strength (cohesion) due to the binder. This value is usually obtained from a solution proposed by Mitchell and co-workers, in the early 1980?s, for stopes with an exposed backfill face. This paper presents a brief review of the Mitchell et al. solution, with some of its main limitations. Some of the recently developed solutions for backfill design are then summarized and discussed.

A precious metals refinery’s switch to personal computer-based, three-dimensional piping design saved many hours in the design of a South African precious metals refinery. Bateman Minerals and Industrial provided engineering, procurement and construction management services for Impala Platinum Limited-Refineries’ new $60 million refinery in Springs, South Africa. This project is one of the largest platinum refineries in the world. Bateman evaluated a new design method during this project that involved developing a three-dimensional model for the project. The new method saved time by reducing the man-hours required to generate complete project documentation, including plans, sections, isometrics and material takeoffs. The new method also saved design and construction time by allowing designers to detect clashes before construction began.

"This paper reviews the status of computational modelling of a variety of common metals reduction processes, namely the blast furnace, rotary kiln and fluidised bed, and one new process not yet commercialised, namely smelting-reduction as in the HIsmelt Process. In each case, the last decade has seen the emergence of the capability to simulate the processes using multi-phase reacting computational fluid dynamics techniques. In some cases this capability is still in the process of being developed, and the next few years will see the maturing of the modelling techniques. As they become established, it will be possible to apply them to further refine the older technologies such as blast furnaces and rotary kilns, and assist in the optimisation, commercialisation and acceptance of the newer technologies such as fluidised bed and molten bath reduction. The development of a computational fluid dynamic model of bath smelting-reduction is described in some detail to illustrate how a large number of complex and interacting phenomena can be successfully simulated within a CFD framework. IntroductionPyrometallurgical reduction processes, such as the iron blast furnace, have become increasing more sophisticated through the centuries, so that today they are often highly efficient. There are continuing pressures, however, to refine existing processes and develop new ones. The imperatives are often economic, given that the long-term trend in the price of metals is always downward. In recent times, there has been the additional need to improve the environmental impact of metal production. Given that they almost inevitably require the use of carbon, metal reduction processes are large sources of greenhouse gases, and even a relatively small improvement in efficiency can be valuable in reducing CO2 production. Local environmental issues, such as the need to control of particulate emissions, are also driving incremental improvements in equipment.In addition to the economic and environmental drivers mentioned above, new process development is also being driven by the need to process new ores, and the need to produce unrefined metal in a form more compatible with alternative routes for downstream processing. An example of the latter is the production of DR! (Direct Reduced Iron) as a feed for EAF Electric Arc Furnace) in mini-mills.Further improvement of processes that have already been honed by continual plant experimentation over many years is not an easy task. To deliver further gains in efficiency, throughput, or product quality requires a highly sophisticated tool: one such tool· is computational modelling."

The oxidation kinetics of Ni-Y alloys in the range 0.04 to 8 weight-percent Y, and of high-purity Ni, were compared by the use of a sensitive volumetric apparatus. The reactions followed approximately the parabolic rate law; for oxidations in 02 at 0.5 atm and 1,200° C, the parabolic rate constant was about 0.37 + (0.064) (Y-2.11) mg cm-2 min-1/2, where Y represents the weight-percent Y in the alloy. Internal oxidation of Y occurred in the alloy specimens and the resultant Y203 particles, which were in patterns related to the eutectic structure of the alloys, served as markers showing that the subsequent oxidation of the surrounding Ni was by inward diffusion of O. The scale consisted in each case of NiO, but the inner parts of the scale on the alloy specimens included the patterned Y203 particles. The thicknesses of the inner parts of the scale depended directly on the Y concentration, and the thicknesses of the Y2O3-free outer parts of the scale were inversely related to the Y content of the alloys. There is thus a relationship between the thickness of the outer part of the scale and the protectivity of the scale. Outward diffusion of Ni and inward movement of 0, from the inner boundary of the Y2O3-free part of the scale, is proposed as a mechanism for these results.

"This report describes a research project for evaluating the applicability of the widely accepted 80 percent criterion for elongation of ground anchors to anchors with unbonded lengths exceeding 100 feet. This issue is driven by several recent projects involving ground anchors for landslide stabilization in which a significant percentage of the anchors did not meet the criterion that requires measured elongation during proof load testing of at least 80 percent of the theoretical elastic elongation. The projects involved anchor unbonded lengths in the range of 85 to 220 feet, which is outside the range traditionally used in practice, although anchors of this length are being used more frequently for landslide stabilization. The principal objective of this research is to address whether the widely accepted criterion of 80 percent elongation is applicable for such applications, and whether other factors affect the ability of anchors to meet the criterion.Analytical methods for predicting transfer of load along the length of steel strand due to friction loss are used routinely in the prestressed concrete industry. These analytical expressions provide a rational framework for quantifying changes in load due to friction along the length of a ground anchor in terms of a ‘wobble coefficient’ (K) as defined in Aalami (2004). Values of the wobble coefficient for ground anchors can only be determined by back-calculating from load tests, i.e., fit the value of K to the appropriate analytical expression based on the known test load and measured percent elongation. The analytical basis is first developed and shown to provide a tool for evaluating results of anchor load tests to determine the magnitude of expected elongation as a function of unbonded length. Next, a database of anchor load tests is used to back-calculate values of K for anchors with unbonded lengths in the range typically used in geotechnical applications (< 100 feet). These values of K are then used to calculate expected friction loss for anchors with high unbonded lengths (100 to 250 feet) to evaluate whether the 80 percent criterion is reasonable."

Anglogold Ashanti?s Kopanang Gold Plant (previously No. 9 Gold Plant) treats ore from Kopanang and Tau Lekoa shafts. The plant is twin streamed and has dedicated treatment circuits, from milling to final product, for each shaft. Waste rock material is used to compensate for the mill gap on both streams. Each stream consists of three 4.85 m x9.15 m ROM mills in closed circuit with a single stage hydrocyclone, milling an average of 7 000 t per day. The liner configuration in each mill consists of six rows of 30 grid liners along with rectangular lifter bars. The topic of gold lock-up is not new and has been investigated and reported on many times, both within Anglogold Ashanti and the broader mining industry. Although the lock-up mechanism is understood, its measurement is neither practical nor precise. The initial lock-up in a new liner and the release as the liner wears down cannot be accurately quantified. Previous test work carried out on Kopanang Gold Plant (with a ?gold scanner?) measured the natural gamma radiation emitted by uranium. This radiation is in proportion to the mass of concentrate locked up in the grid liner pockets, as well as between the cast-on backing plate and the shell. The ratio of concentrate lock-up was estimated as 35% behind the liners and65% in the pockets. Mill gravity concentrates are recovered during routine relining operations from behind the grid liners at Kopanang Gold Plant. Prior to relining, the liners tend to release the concentrate from the pockets as the liners wear. Historical Kopanang data from actual ?mill gold? smelted indicates that an average of 29 kg gold is recovered from behind each row. This indicates a total lock-up of 250kg gold per mill. This locked-up gold should preferably be minimizedor eliminated for the following reasons: ?The cyclic build-up and release of gold in mills complicates accounting ?Gold concentrate arising from liners is a security risk and creates a major mechanism for gold theft ?Loss of interest on the value of 250 kg fine gold is significant and was a major driver for the project. These factors led to the need to develop techniques to eliminate or at least minimize the gold lock-up in the mills. Wave liners, with rubber inserts, have been successful in eliminating lock-up, and were tested at Kopanang Gold Plant in November 2000. However, due to increased load-slip and high wear rates associated with these liners, this option proved less economical in terms of liner wear. Grid liners, with rubber-filled pockets, demonstrated a very high wear life and eliminated pocket lock-up. This system was successfully trialed in January 2003, but unfortunately did not prevent lock-up behind the liners. Current developments have resulted in a system that eliminates both pocket and backing plate lock-up. The conventional grid liner design has been modified to remove its steel backing plate. Rubber inserts that are integrated onto a rubber backing plate, have been designed to be used with the newly modified grid. The backing plate and grid pockets are now completely occupied by rubber, thus completely eliminating concentrate build-up around the new grid liner system installed in November 2003. Results to date are promising and liner life is expected to exceed conventional performance.

"Boliden Metal Corporation has developed a technique to treat complex copper concentrates containing large amounts of lead, zinc, arsenic, antimony and bismuth which cannot be treated in conventional smelters due to the impurities.Tests were carried out to treat such complex copper concentrates in the TBRC. They were performed in a pilot-plant TBRC with charges of 5 tons. These tests resulted in a new method to treat complex copper raw materials and produce a blister copper low in impurities. The background and data from the test work are presented as well as a flowsheet for a full-scale process.IntroductionThe Ronnskar Works is situated on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia, 40 miles east of the Boliden Mine. Smelting began at Ronnskar in 1930 to process the complex ore extracted from the Boliden Mine. The Ronnskar Works has subsequently developed into a relatively integrated smelting plant.Copper and lead sulphide concentrates from Boliden&apos;s own mines as well as purchased copper raw materials are processed. The main products are refined copper and lead, but full utilization of the raw material also yields other metals and some metallurgical and chemical by-products. The products include gold, silver, zinc clinker, white arsenic, arsenic salts and arsenic metal , selenium and selenium compounds, nickel sulphates, sulphuric acid and liquid sulphur dioxide."

I~JTI HE work on the indium-zirconium system is part A of a larger investigation of zirconium-phase diagrams with solute elements, silver, cadmium, indium, tin, and antimony, which is intended to provide information about the metallic valency of zirconium. The system is an ideal example since the sizes of indium and zirconium atoms are nearly the same, and the solute and the solvent occur in the same row of the periodic table. The only solute from Group III B which had previously been added to zirconium was aluminum&apos; and it was of interest to determine whether indium would dissolve appreciably in alpha zirconium and stabilize this phase in the same manner. Experimental Procedure The experimental methods used in the indium-zirconium work are similar to those described earlier for the silver-zirconium system.&apos; Reactor Grade 1 iodide zirconium of 99.95 pct purity* and indium of 99.99 pct purity were arc cast, and then annealed in silica capsules with protective foils of zirconium and molybdenum. Annealing temperatures and times varied from 1 day at 1300°C to 43 days at 550°C. The compositions of the alloys were detcrmined by an individual chemical analysis of the actual metallographic specimens after two or more sides were examined to insure the absence of solute segregation. Calibrated thermocouples were used throughout, and the uncertainty in the temperatures reported, owing to calibration error, furnace control, and measurement of the small temperature gradients near the capsules, is believed to be well within ±2°C. Typical impurities in the alloys were found by a neutron-activation analysis of four different alloys. The results are given in Table I where the ranges of values will be seen to compare favorably with the usual values for iodide zirconium. With respect to oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon the absence of any unusual amount of these elements compared to iodide zirconium was indicated by the alloy hardness values, since hardness is increased sharply by the presence of these elements. The value for 0 pct In, obtained from the alloys by extrapolation, is 58 2 7 VPN which is in the low part3 f the normal range of hardness found in iodide zirconium. "As we head toward the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December, the environment and sustainability will become headline news for a while. Governments are expected to agree to a set of binding targets to reduce carbon emissions probably before 2020, and certainly before 2050. This will, in effect, initiate a low carbon economy in many parts of the world. Sustainability has mainly been rhetoric so far, the exceptions being projects for those looking to the long-term future and not for short-term financial gains.The probabilities and consequences of negative impacts on the environment and on society over the short term and in the long term can be assessed and mitigated, but mitigation often adds cost. Also, we cannot know what technologies will be available, say 1,000 years into the future, which is about 40 generations of our society. It is easier to have a connection with 100 years into the future, which is only about 4 generations. Individuals may have a different sense of sustainability, and place a different value on mitigation, its cost, its importance and its potential impacts.Sustainability means different things to different parties on a construction project. For example, a land developer is likely to have a different view on the design in terms of sustainability than that of the designer. The developer may also likely to be more interested in sustainabiliy if there are tangible economic benefits that might accrue. Achieving sustainability on any project, leads to conflict between competing interests or demands cooperation between the economic and technical sectors involved. The foundations for a building or bridge, by definition, need to interact with the ground whose behaviour cannot be dictated by man. The aims of sustainability are the same as for the building or bridge, both of which are constructed of manmade materials, but it is less clear how they should be achieved. An example is the driven pile that does not produce spoil waste, but is likely to be too noisy to be acceptable in an urban environment. This then begs the question, should the public accept the nuisance of short-term pile driving to achieve a more sustainable foundation? Additionally, the question has to be asked, can the deep foundations industry develop its techniques and products to help make them more acceptable and appropriate more often than is possible now?"

Introduction Noranda, like similar businesses, is suffering the pain of previously unheard of currency relationships, a cost structure built in better days, and conditions of gross oversupply possible in almost any commodity. Indeed, it does seem like the worst of all possible worlds is out there before us. To understand a Canadian natural resource company, you must know how the country is organized. So far as natural resources are concerned, Canada is not Canada. Canada is 10 provinces and each own the resources situated therein. Thus, the conditions of extraction, exploitation, and operation are all set by the province, while the conditions of trade and currency are set by the Federal government. This means that what may be the rule in Newfoundland may not be the rule in Manitoba or British Columbia. The second thing is that the Canadian currency has been a satellite of the US dollar for a long time. This means that we hold the unenviable and unjustified position of being the country with the second strongest currency in the world. What this has meant to us is what it has meant to an American operator. Since 1980, a pound of copper fetches 214% more for a Chilean than it does for us and a pound of zinc 115% more for a Belgian. From an American point of view, Canada is favored because its dollar is valued at 25% to 30% less than the U.S. However, because of industrial indiscretions in years past, Canada has a locked in labor cost disadvantage that is very hard to cope with. Canada has a unique situation with its labor unions. Many of the unions are, or have been, internationals and therefore gained undue strength in early days. Canada has a third political party of socialist persuasion. It is entirely funded by dues from laor union members. Thus, we have a politicized workforce. And finally, we have a public service that has the right to strike. This had made the public service unions by far the strongest now in Canada. What this means to the mining industry is that there is somebody out there blazing the trail. The unrelenting power of these public service unions probably creates a climate more conducive to excessive wage settlements in industry than would otherwise be the case. Study, Work, and Pray So what do we do when times get tough? In simple terms, we study a lot, we work harder, and we pray a great deal. We study a lot in terms of learning hitherto unknown strengths and weaknesses of our products, processes, and operations. We work hard in the sense that we do everything possible to improve our productivity. And we pray a lot because, so far, anything else we have done has not been enough. Some years ago, Noranda recognized that its principal base and precious metal operations were diminishing. To provide for the future, we should branch out into other resource type operations. These might be countercyclical and also perhaps a little more permanent. For this reason, Noranda entered the potash, aluminum, and forest products businesses.
