People in the real estate industry are fond of saying that the three most important features of a piece of property are, in order, location, location, and location. This is perhaps the reason that the owners of a well known high-end restaurant chain chose to spend $15 million dollars to renovate 5000 square feet of basement in a 22-story commercial building in the heart of New York City's Time Square. The goal was to create a music club with a stage area and dance floor with a mezzanine level surrounding the dance floor. In order to create the 50' x 40' dance floor and 20' x 40' stage area, 3 concrete columns were removed. New transfer girders were used to transfer the loads of these columns to new steel columns. For the mezzanine, nine columns had to be underpinned. All work continued while the restaurants, shops and offices above carried on business as usual. This paper details some of the means and methods utilized as well as the challenges faced by Underpinning & Foundation Constructors, Inc. in underpinning the columns and installing the new transfer steel.

The National Mining Hall of Fame will hold its 13thAnnual Induction Banquet during MINExpo International 2000 in Las Vegas, NV. The gala black-tie (optional) event will honor eight legendary leaders of the mining industry. The event will take place at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel on Sunday, Oct. 8. The induction ceremonies will salute mining greats elected by the board of governors from a list of nominees submitted by mining industry partners and the public. The members of the Class of 2000 will join 151 other inductees enshrined in the Mining Hall of Fame in Leadville, CO. The evening will begin at 6 pm with a cash bar reception followed by the banquet and program at 7 pm. Keynoting the banquet program will be Harrison (Jack) Schmitt. He was the geologist/astronaut of the Apollo 17 mission to the moon in 1972 (see related story on page 26). And he is the only scientist to “kick rocks on the moon.” Schmitt is also a member of the Mining Hall’s board of governors. Schmitt was also the keynote speaker at the First Annual Induction Banquet in Denver, CO in 1988.

Washability analysis determines the maximum separation efficiency that can be achieved in the operation of coal preparation plants. Unfortunately, there are no on-line techniques for determining this most fundamental information. It now appears possible to determine coal washability on-line through the use of x-ray computed tomography (CT) analysis. This paper presents the results for the development of a CT-based, on-line coal washability analyzer. The development of appropriate hardware and software necessary to adapt a CT analyzer for use in determining coal washability is discussed. Testing of the analyzer using well-characterized coal samples is presented.

To obtain the thermodynamic properties of a multicomponent liquid alloy system over the whole range of concentration at an arbitrary temperature, the free volume cell theory has been applied to derive the formula of activity coefficients of liquid solutions based on the infinitely dilute solutions at some temperature. The linear logarithmic relationship between activity coefficients of binary dilute solutions and reciprocal of absolute temperature have been verified, and are in good agreement with the experimental values from the literature. The Monte-Carlo algorithm was used to calculate the nonlinear end value equations of binary systems, then the free volume parameters obtained were correlated with the activity coefficients of liquid binary, ternary, and quaternary systems at an arbitrary temperature. Three dimensional a-X-T diagrams of some binary systems representing the temperature and concentration dependence of activities were plotted. The calculated results regarding non-ferrous alloy systems have been statistically examined with the experimental values from the literature. Hence, this simple approach could be useful for analyzing thermodynamic properties of liquid alloy systems.

PT Freeport Indonesia, a subsidiary of New Orleans-based Freeport McMoran Copper and Gold of New Orleans, operates a large mining complex on the Western half of the Island of New Guinea in Tembagapura, Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The IOZ (Intermediate Ore Zone) mine, one of the underground orebodies, is mined by block caving. The area affected by the cave collects a large quantity of rain and ground waters mixing with fine rock particles. The mixture, commonly called æwet muckÆ, sometimes spills into drawpoints and makes the working environment hazardous to the loader operators. Wet muck is observed in an increasing number of drawpoints in the IOZ mine and remote LHD (Load-Haul-Dump) technology has been implemented to handle the ore. The driving force for this automation project has been the safety of the loader operators. The system has been developed mainly in-house and incorporates state-of-the-art features. Up to eight remote loaders and nine rock breakers are controlled from an underground control room located approximately 400 metres from the active extraction panels. The two underground crushers and nine conveyor feeders are also operated remotely from an adjacent control room. The development of FreeportÆs remote system has taken time and considerable effort. Not only the success of the IOZ mine was at stake but also the fulfillment of environmental commitments pertaining to the mill tailings. Approximately eight per cent of the mill feed must come from underground skarn deposits to neutralise the acid-generating tailings generated by the huge Grasberg open pit ores.

The U.S. Geological Survey recently completed a digital coal resource assessment model of the Upper Pennsylvanian Pittsburgh coal bed which indicates that of the original 34 billion short tons [31 billion tonnes] of coal, 16 billion short tons [14 billion tonnes] remain after subtracting mined-out coal. When technical, environmental, and social restrictions are applied to the remaining Pittsburgh coal model, only12 billion short tons [11 billion tonnes] are available for mining. Our assessment models estimate that up to 0.61 billion short tons [0.55 billion tonnes], 2.7billion short tons [2.4 billion tonnes], and 8.5 billion short tons [7.7 billion tonnes] could be available for surface mining, continuous mining, and longwall mining, respectively. This analysis is an example of a second-generation regional coal availability study designed to model recoverability characteristics for all the major coal beds in the U.S.

Research on the low-potential hydrophobic state of pyrite with potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) as collector, is reported to help explain and understand the fundamental aspects of the N2TEC flotation process, which was originally developed for the improved recovery of gold from refractory auriferous sulfide ores. Typically in the N2TEC process, air is replaced by nitrogen as the flotation gas, and potassium amyl xanthate is used as collector for the reactive auriferous pyrite particles. The first N2TEC flotation process was commissioned at Lone Tree in Nevada in March 1997 and has been in operation ever since. On the basis of electrochemically controlled contact angle measurements, the low-potential, low-pH hydrophobic state of pyrite has been examined as a function of flotation variables such as pH, gas-phase composition, collector concentration and pyrite potential.

Surface properties of minerals could be modified selectively and very specifically by adsorption -desorption (dissolution) processes. This requires a monitoring and control of the outermost surface layer at a molecular and atomic level. The nature and structure of self-assembled submonolayers and monolayers at the interface of minerals were studied by infrared reflection spectroscopy. The external reflection spectra of the adsorbed monolayers on any type of minerals: transparent, opaque or non-transparent, recorded at different angles of incidence and for two polarizations are an excellent source of information about the nature and surface distribution of the adsorbed species. The developed method allows to obtain detailed information at a molecular level about the adsorbed surface species. By combination of the simulated and experimental data, the qualitative description of the adsorbed species as well as quantitative evaluation of orientation and the thickness of the adsorption layers were obtained. This fundamental knowledge allows to determine the mechanisms of surface phenomena which govern selective separations. Examples of different surfactant - mineral systems and industrial applications will be discussed.

The following is a Maintainability Design Checklist for coal mining equipment. The purpose of the checklist is to provide a summary of design review points for the maintainability assessment of new or existing underground equipment. It specifically focuses on the identification of equipment design features, tasks, or procedures that impact equipment downtime, repair costs, labor hours and maintainer skill level requirements. Some checklist points are general in nature. The checklist was designed to be used across all categories of underground equipment. The intent is to draw attention to design features and maintenance procedures that will increase maintainability requirements. You are encouraged to adapt this checklist to site specific or machine specific requirements by: Inserting specific performance criteria for various categories of maintenance tasks. For example; all hydraulic lines on a shuttle car should be replaceable in 15 minutes or 25 minutes, etc. Adding or deleting checklist items for different categories of equipment. You would include environmental control equipment, for example, on face equipment and not on shuttle cars or man trips. Adding additional checklist items based on site or equipment specific maintenance histories or experience, company maintenance standards, or other factors.

"During the continuous casting of steel, transient 'flow events can be very important to the generation of quality problems, such as shear entrainment, surface level fluctuations and bubble entrainment. These phenomena can be better predicted using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) models than the K-E models, which have been extensively studied. In this work the turbulent transient flow in a water model of a continuous caster has been both simulated using LES models and measured using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The results of PIV and LES have been compared to validate the LES model and also to enhance the understanding of the prominent transient features of the flow field. The flow near the top surface in PIV was found to contain periods of 5-1 Os when the velocities were three to four times their mean values, which is of importance to the shear entrainment of the liquid flux. In both simulation and PIV the upper roll structure is found to change chaotically from a single large recirculation structure to a set of distinct vortices. The inlet swirl in PIV is seen to persist more than halfway across the mold, causing a characteristic staircase velocity vector pattern when viewed in a plane parallel to the wide faces. The lower rolls in PIV are significantly asymmetric for very long periods of time (- I-hour) and go through a repeating sequence of features. One of these features involving a short circuit between the upward and downward flow in the lower roll is also seen in the simulation and is of significance to bubble entrapment.IntroductionThe turbulent flow through the nozzle and in the mold of the continuous caster has been studied extensively using computational Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) models of turbulent flow [1,2]. Defects, such as internal inclusion of liquid fl4x through surface shear, pencil pipe defects due to bubble entrapment, surface defects due to level fluctuations are caused by transient flow phenomena oc'curring in the mold. These phenomena can be better predicted using transient Large Eddy Simulation [3] or ""LES"" models."

"A comprehensive computer model was developed to understand and optimize the centrifugal casting process for manufacturing TiC/Al-bronze friction drums. Performance of these components requires proper distribution of TiC particles, which is shown by dimensional analysis to be dominated by centrifugal buoyancy effects and solidification kinetics.The model addresses the following: (1) a rheology-viscosity model of the interference between moving particles, (2) engulfment (entrapment) or pushing of particles in the mushy region by the advancing solid/liquid interface, (3) nucleation and growth of equiaxed and eutectic phases, (4) effects of particle size, particle concentration, and cooling rate on the final grain size, and (5) the impingement effect of particles on the nucleation and growth kinetics of solidifying microstructure.Parametric studies were conducted using the computer model to investigate the effects of various process and material parameters on the distribution of TiC particles. The effects of the volume fraction, size, and morphology of the particles (including clusters and agglomerates) on the particle distribution were evaluated in detail. The complex interaction between the solidifying structure and insoluble ceramic particles in centrifugally-cast metal-matrix-composites was also investigated.The model predictions of particle distribution and microstructure were validated with experimental data for centrifugally-cast A356/SiC and TiC/Al-bronze alloys.This work was conducted by the National Center for Excellence in Metalworking Technology, operated by Concurrent Technologies Corporation under contract No. N00140-92- C-BC49 to the U.S. Navy as part of the U.S. Navy Manufacturing Technology Program."

This paper presents a summary of tools and methods used for geotechnical assessments and monitoring systems at block caving mines. A critical review of these tools is given based on the authorÆs experience in block caving operations. The reviewed tools include cavability prediction, fragmentation evaluation, geotechnical monitoring systems, numerical stress analysis and others. Some of these tools have been developed under certain circumstances in particular mines and experience shows that their applications under different geological and mining conditions have often been difficult. Examples from block cave mines are also utilised in this paper to illustrate the importance of the further development of these tools, whilst possible improvements on these tools are also suggested.

"The properties of Ni-Mn-Ga films such as chemical composition, crystal structure, microstructure and transformation temperature were investigated with respect to sputtering conditions in the present study. The Ni-Mn-Ga films were deposited on a polyvinyl alcohol substrate with a radio-frequency magnetron sputtering apparatus using the NisoMn2sGa2s and Nis2Mn:«1Ga24 targets. After separating from the substrates, the films were annealed at the temperature between 873 and 1273 K for 3.6 ks. The chemical composition of the films depended on the radiofrequency generating power, however, there was no dependence on the heat treatment temperature. Each deposited film had a columnar grain structure. After heat treatment, the width of columnar grains widened and then became indistinct with increasing heat treatment temperature. The Heusler type cubic crystal structure of the fi4n with heat treatment at 1073 K changed to the tetragonal one through the martensitic structural transformation during cooling. The martensitic structural transformation temperature increased with increasing nickel content of films, while the Curie temperature decreased. The film obtained at 200 W using the Nis2Mn24Ga24 target after heat treatment at 1073 K showed one-way shape memory effect through the reverse martensitic structural transformation during heating.IntroductionThe ternary intermetallic compound NiiMnGa has a Heusler-type crystal structure and is an intelligent material, which has a shape memory effect and a ferromagnetic property. The martensitic structural transformation occurs within the ferromagnetic temperature region. The cubic crystal structure of L21 at high temperature changes to a tetragonal one through the martehsitic structural transformation during cooling. The films of this compound can be applied for an actuator of micro-machines."

Compared with land mineral resources investigation, as well known, it is more important for marine geologists to get image data (e.g. photographs, video tapes and various charts) because they are often hard to reach deep seabed directly. In the past years a plenty of image data which are in various forms have been accumulated. In contrast with both digital and character data managing the image data by using database is just unfolding and it will be a trend for marine mineral resources investigation. GIS (Geography Information System) offers another useful means of processing image data, especially geological data. GIS is characterized by processing vector data (e.g. point, line and polygon), but newer versions of GIS software package are also able to process raster data (e.g. photographs etc.). The present author made a presentation on marine mineral image database during 25th UMI, but that system runs under DOS environment and dealt with only mineralogy. Recently a new system which integrates Oracle image database with GIS (ArcView version 3.1) has been developed. This system runs under Windows NT environment. In the network environment Server/Client mode is adopted, and over 200 basic subdatabases (tables)are located on Server; operating interfaces are located on several clients so that several persons can operate the system simultaneously. The whole system involves five types of marine mineral resources: manganese nodules, cobalt-rich crusts, polymetallic sulfides, phosphorites and gas hydrates. The data of every type of marine mineral resources described above are distributed among five units and several blocks. The units and blocks are described below:

The Kidd operation mines roughly 10 000 tpd of copper and zinc ore from underground and employs about 700 personnel. In the late summer and fall of 1997, major movements in the proximity of the east wall of the Kidd open pit had been observed. The Kidd pit had been mined from 1965 to 1977 to depths of 260 m (850 ft), followed by subsequent mining by underground methods to current depths in excess of 1830 m (6800 ft). The No. 1 Mine (2600 Level to pit bottom) is approximately 90% extracted, with most of the remaining reserve between 2000 and 2500 levels. Although initial concerns centred on the stability of the pit walls, the potential ramifications of the movements to the underground were recognized and measures were implemented to ensure the safety of personnel as well as to minimize the potential damage to existing operations. In late October, damage to underground operations was observed as deep as the 2000 Level. In the final assessment, the global mobilized mass was a “wedge”-shaped hangingwall block extending from surface to about 610 m (2000 ft) below surface. The “wedge” boundaries are defined by a fault and shear zone which have continuous lengths in excess of 1070 m (3500 ft); its base by shearing through the host rock mass; and its eastern face by deep tension cracks (Fig. 1). Mined and filled excavations at the western face of the “wedge” allowed mobilization of a mass in excess of 30 M tonnes. Movements in excess of 75 cm (30 in.) per day were recorded on the surface stations that preceded the complete shutdown of operations on October 29, 1997. The evaluations in the days following the shut-down were centred on mitigation of immediate and future possible negative impacts on infrastructure and mining of the remaining No. 1 Mine reserves while ensuring the safety of the operators. This effort required the rapid assessment of the potential damage of the block movement on underground infrastructure, stope access, drainage and ventilation, as well as airblast potential due to the falling of a large block into the pit near the ventilation intake at the base of the pit. These assessments were presented in a previous paper (Seldon et al., 1999). In total, the lateral movement of the block on the ground surface was over 4.3 m (14 ft). This paper describes the detailed studies performed to understand the failure mechanism and to assess the impacts on future mining in No. 1 Mine.

As we enter the new millennium, the South African mining industry has to ensure that it becomes more competitive if it is to survive in the ever more demanding global environment. Traditionally, mechanization in narrow stopes has been limited to the use of scraper winches, and numerous mechanization attempts have been restricted to pilot projects operated on an extremely limited scale (with varying degrees of success). The benefits of hydropower are well documented, and Northam Platinum has shown these benefits to be achievable on a mine-wide basis. However, the equipment originally developed for hydropower systems has followed the traditional labour-intensive approach commonly used in deep level narrow stoping operations. The problems experienced with the hydropower system are discussed and the rationale for developing alternate technologies is explored. The hydropower system has shown to be a versatile powering medium which can be harnessed for a diversity of uses. It (hydropower) enables the mining engineer to change traditional paradigms and to design an entirely new approach for optimizing the mining operation based on explosive techniques. The system developed for Northam consists of the following: ?Purpose-built stope drill rig operated off the hydropower system with special features to ensure accurate drilling patterns throughout the length of the blast hole ?Purpose-built high rate cleaning system for rapid transfer of fractured ore to the stope orepass ?Redesigned stope layout to facilitate in-stope water control and to recover fines from the run-off water ?Purpose-built drill rig for rapid establishment of reef raises and advanced strike gullies ?Purpose-built drill rig for flat end development. On both types of development end rig, emphasis is placed on ensuring accurate drilling patterns throughout the length of the hole to maximize linear advance per blast. The paper discusses the implementation of the Northam system on a large scale as well as current initiatives to further improve on the efficiencies of mining operations. It concludes by emphasizing that mechanized hydropowered stope technologies are in their infancy and thus offer unlimited scope in progressing beyond today?s paradigms to present as yet unthought of solutions for optimizing deep level ore extraction.

"Processing of ferrites has gained tremendous importance in recent times to meet the high performance demands on ferrites in keeping with the fast emerging· technologies. The quality of ferrite powders has strong influence on ·the performance of final device. Fabrication· of high performing ferrite components requires starting ferrite powders of precise stoichiometry, purity and microstructure. It is difficult to obtain these attributes by the conventional ceramic method. The key to obtaining quality powders lies in the· solution techniques. With this in view soft ferrites have been prepared by a wet chemical process, known as the citrate precursor method, which involves the formation of citrate complexes of the constituent cations. The advantages of this process are the ease of preparation and close control of composition, homogeneity, purity and particle size. Electrical and magnetic measurements on lithium ferrites have shown resistivity higher by more than two orders of magnitude compared to that observed for samples prepared by the conventional ceramic method, and low magnetic losses, making the ferrites specially suitable for high frequency applications.IntroductionProperties of ferrites are known to be sensitive to .their processing technique. A small deviation in the compositional stoichiometry of the ferrite affects its properties greatly. Soft ferrites such as Ni-Zn, Mn-Zn and Mg-Mn. are well known ferrites covering wide-ranging applications [1,2]. Lithiiim ferrites have also assumed technological importance for microwave applications and are potential substitutes for the expensive garnets [3]. Lithium ferrites are often doped with zinc to tailor the saturation magnetization required at high frequencies. Lithium and lithium-zinc ferrites, however, present difficulty to processing due to the volatile nature of both the cation components, namely Li and Zn. These ions are volatile at temperatures > 1000°C which makes their processing difficult. One of the main considerations of high frequency performance of ferrites is the high eddy current losses which prevent the interaction of the magnetic field with the ferrite component and hence impair device performance. These losses can be reduced by having a material of high resistivity. Electrical conductivity in lithium ferrite has been attributed to electron hopping [4] between the two vaience states of iron, Fe2+ <=> Fe3+, on octahedral sites. Maintaining the + 3 valence state of otahedral- Fe ions is thus a prerequisite for achieving high resistivity. The resistivity of ferrites is normally found to be low when processed by the conventional solid-state or the ceramic method [5]. This is attributed to (a) extensive ball-milling employed in the method to mix the component oxides results in non-stoichiometric compositions due to introduction of additional Fe ions on abrasion of steel balls during milling, (b) high processing temperatures involved which result in significant volatilization of Li and Zn ions creating thereby oxygen non-stoichiometry which results in reduction of Fe3 + to Fe2 +, (c) large and non-uniform grain sizes. In the present work, preparation of Li and Li-Zn ferrites by a non-conventional method known as a citrate precursor method [6, 7] which requires lower processing temperatures and duration is reported. The method gives stoichiometric compositions on account of homogeneous atomic-scale mixing of the constituent cations via the formation of metal-citrate complexes mixed in solution state. The method is also capable of giving small grain size which aids the oxidation ofFe2+ ions."

Recent events demonstrate that civil and government facilities and structures face an ever-increasing need to be designed for protection against malevolent explosions. Modification of existing public structures and especially design of new ones increasingly includes provisions for explosive protection. ISEE members endorse and promote responsible application of explosives to benefit mankind and deplore any other use. However, our knowledge of explosive behavior and our ability to predict the results of explosive events puts us in a unique position to give guidance to designers of civil and public structures. Recent advances in computational methods have resulted in new computer codes with ALE (arbitrary lagrangian eulerian) simulation capabilities. Historically, lagrangian computational methods have been used for modeling solids because the mesh or discretization moves with the material. Rock breakage resulting from explosively induced shock-waves has been successfully modeled with lagrangian codes. Explosive detonation has traditionally been modeled with eulerian techniques. Eulerian methods have been used to model gases and fluids, tracking the material as it moves through the computational grid. ALE computational technology couples the two methods together in a manner never before possible. An ALE simulation can accurately treat the explosive detonation, interaction of explosive gases with air, and the impact of explosive event on nearby solid structures. ALEGRA (Budge et al. 1997 a & b) is an ALE code developed at Sandia National Laboratories. ALEGRA simulations accurately predict the explosively induced impulse on the structure to be protected. It has been applied to the analysis and design of blastwalls to protect structures and people from explosive events. The impulse calculated can be used by structural engineers to design a blastwall. ALEGRA has also been applied to predict the effect of a blastwall on explosion overpressure some distance behind the blastwall to assess the effect on people present during the event.

Nowadays in Brazil the final disposal for spent batteries include sanitary and industrial landfill for hazardous waste from domestic waste and industrial waste respectively. The problems of environmental impact caused by spent batteries had been discussed of several years, considering the fact of metals contents, like Cd, Hg, Pb and Zn. Some techniques are been proposed for recycling this type of waste in order to protect the environment while bringing also economic advantages of recovering metals. The reclamation of metals from secondary raw materials had been employed and further applications of this flexible technology are planned to the future. The processing of metals solutions involving hydrometallurgical techniques is an efficient method for recovering metals, since it provides completely recovery of metals with low energy requirements. This paper discusses the spent alkalline batteries characterization and leaching stage experiments results with sulphuric acid as leachant. After batteries dismantling by mineral processing techniques, the black powder sample produced was submitted to diffraction X-ray characterization and atomic absorption spectrophotometry in order to verify all the substances presented. Some experiments were carried on to develop a hydrometallurgical process for initial metal recovery aiming to get Zn into a soluble form on aqueous solution in order to propose the next stages of purification and recovering Zn, as electroplated deposition. The sulphuric acid was chosen not only for being cheaper than other leachants but also for improving the extraction of soluble Zn as ZnS04 form at diluted acid concentration. Batch laboratory experiments leaching procedure were conducted to determine appropriate leaching conditions from the viewpoint of maximize zinc extraction. In these tests an amount of dry powder batteries was added to different acid concentrations and solid/liquid ratio and after leaching and filtration the aqueous solutions were submitted to atomic absorption spectrophotometry analysis to verify the Zn content.

"This paper canvasses emerging trends in public policy and law, which may influence the zinc industry's interest in recycling. There are forces at work beyond direct economic benefits that will drive recycling of zinc, including:• corporate determination to pursue sustainable practices and product stewardship.• public perceptions and pressure,• customer and investor demand,• workforce recruitment, and• protection and expansion of marketsIn this paper, these ""indirect"" forces are examined with particular focus on the zinc industry: It is concluded that, in today's world with an emerging precautionary approach to policy and law making, public perception concerning the environmental implications of metal products, and the need to conserve resources for future generation, a strong industry response is required."
