The discovery and development of explosives mark one of the most important findings in the history of civilization. Without explosives our vast economic enterprise concerning the mining of coal, copper, iron, aluminum, and various other ores could not function. Explosives are used in all kinds of construction works, in the razing of old buildings, blasting of trenches, driving of tunnels, and in many other instances common to our everyday life. For these reasons explosives are rightfully referred to as the forerunner of progress. An explosive may be defined as a substance (usually a mixture) that, when flame or shock is applied, yields readily to rapid combustion or oxidation, accompanied by the formation of such relatively large quantities of gases as to produce much violence and pressure which, in turn, react against their surroundings and cause what is termed an explosion. By their very nature the action of explosives is destructive and disruptive of adjacent materials. Decomposition of explosives can occur through deflagration, which is rapid burning or combustion, as in the case of black powder, or through detonation, which is an almost instantaneous disruption, as in the case of dynamites and blasting agents. HISTORY OF BLASTING WITH EXPLOSIVES At one time workmen obtained stone blocks for building by grooving the rock with crude picks, driving wooden wedges into niches in the rock, and pouring water on the wedges; the swelling of the wood forced out the blocks. As late as the 17th century, fires were placed against the face of rock to crack it, and water was sometimes dashed on the heated rock to shatter it by sudden cooling. This paper shows the potential of a new computer model, using the Glowe-Tech (GT) Tonnage Analyzer program to compare drilling and blasting results. This model uses the crushers and conveyors as measuring tools in aggregate quarries in the USA and Canada. All data is collected using commercially available kilowatt transducers and an analog input/output automation module. There are two areas of measurement used to compare results. The first area is the tonnage moved by key conveyors to show the split in products produced and the actual rate of production. If belt scale readings are not available then the Glowe-Tech Tonnage Analyzer can be used to convert kilowatts from the conveyor motor to tonnage. The second is the tons of rock crushed per kilowatt hour of energy consumption by the primary and secondary (optional) crushers. This modeling process works best if blasts are mucked and crushed in sequence. There are many other variables such as crusher types, crusher settings, screen sizing and actual geology in the pit that can influence the results, however if variables can be standardized then definite trends can be seen when comparing drilling and blasting results

The authors were responsible for a series of large scale multiple chamber charge blasts conducted in the granite mountain area for making construction space on the southeast sea coast in China during 1993-1996. This paper describes the blast design and damage control of one mountain blast 320m in length and 280m in width in the vicinity of two wharfs and a dam. In order to obtain better rock fragmentation and muckpile, the explosive charge should be well-distributed in the mountain. The charge pattern, therefore, was designed with mainly 5 rows of tunnel charge in regular terrain in combination with a chamber charge in irregular topography area and the maximum burden was limited to be less than 38m. In order to protect the dam and wharfs the firing sequence was carefully arranged in 29 intervals and the distance between different charges of the same delay to the dam or wharf was taken into account as an additional delay interval based on the difference of p-wave propagating times. The maximum charge fired in an interval was also limited to less than 34t explosives through dividing the larger charge by a stemming deck.

Originally built between 1913 and 1916, the Ashton Dam & Hydroelectric Facility has experienced various seepage and piping incidents since completion. Ashton Dam is located within 15 miles (24 km) of the historical Teton Dam failure site and about 2.3 miles (3.7 km) west of Ashton, Idaho. Numerous repairs conducted over the years ranged from filling sinkholes on the crest of the dam to placement of rockfill on the upstream slope to improve seismic stability. In addition, the existing low level outlet works was grouted full and abandoned in 1991 due to significant vibrations induced on the dam during its operation.

Carroll Cave, located in Camden County, in south central Missouri, is one of the most significant caves in Missouri with over 12 miles of mapped passages and over 100 known but unmapped side passages. In the early 1990’s there was a breakdown of the originally excellent landowner/caver relations as the ownership of the only known entrance moved to a new generation and grottos squabbled for control. Subsequently the current owner of the natural cave entrance refused to grant anyone permission to enter.

Every year the United States consumes millions of dollars worth of abrasive materials as blasting media. Entrained in either a gas or liquid stream or propelled by paddles or wheels, they are directed onto the surface of another material to modify that surface. The modifications to impacted surfaces include cleaning, cutting, deburring, etching, finishing, and peening. Blasting media can be either organic or mineral abrasive materials. Information and data presented are for only a portion of the mineral abrasives, they are; fused aluminum oxide, coal slag, copper slag, garnet, metallic shot and grit, nickel slag, olivine, silica sand, silicon carbide, and staurolite.

Blasters with the United States Antarctic Program (USAP) have developed techniques for opening access holes in floating sea-ice where the use of conventional drilling equipment is impractical. The blasting techniques have proven successful in sea-ice ranging from 8 to 15 feet thick. Previous published work has treated in detail blasting holes in floating ice from 2 to 6 feet thick.

In the past decade, approximately 5 billion pounds of explosives were used annually in the United States. Most of this quantity of explosives was used by the mining industry and coal mining was the dominant application for explosives. Considering the large amount of explosives used, the accident safety record for the mining industry has improved significantly over the past two decades. Blasting accidents are usually a small percentage of the total number of mining accidents. However, blasting accidents continue to occur and the severity of these accidents is disproportionately high with respect to other types of mining accidents. This paper is a summary and an update of the surface mine blasting accident investigations and studies conducted previously by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the former U.S. Bureau of Mines.

"In the mining industry, rock excavation is the first phase of the comminution process. Downstreamoperations such as secondary breaking, crushing and milling terminate the process, reducing the size of the grains down to the desired particle distribution. In such a cascade process, every process upstream heavily influences all the downstream operations. When rock excavation is carried out by drilling and blasting, a very economic source of energy (the explosive) is used at the utmost upstream; a more expensive source of energy (electricity) is employed for all the downstream phases. This means that managing the correct employ of the explosive energy is a form of managing the whole process, controlling the operational costs and therefore the profitability of the whole business. We simulated this cascade behavior, using as a starting point the experimental data obtained from small-scale block blasting, evaluating the influence of blasting on the grindability of the blasted material. This study showed the reduction in visible (particle size) and invisible fracturing (micro-cracking, resulting in a reduction of the Work Index WI). The particle size distribution for full-scale blasts was estimated by means of algorithm simulation, then we simulated the behavior of the comminution plant fed with the material possessing the characteristics previously estimated. All the costs (drilling, blasting, electric energy for the engines of the crushers and mill) were calculated and charted. The results show a clear curve that allows to estimate the minimum operating expenditure (OPEX) for the whole mine+plant framework. Being the WI dependent on the output on the blast, one can manage the performance and the expenditure of the whole comminution process by adjusting drilling and blasting parameters For any given mine, it is possible to perform a simulation and encounter the minimum OPEX scenario for the comminution process and managerial choices can be oriented accordingly. In a cascade productive chain as mining is, responsible strategic choices must be taken looking at the entire production framework. Compartmentalized managerial staff and budgets for separated production areas are not acceptable anymore. Somehow higher costs upstream can lead to effective decrease in costs and increase in efficiency and productivity of the processes downstream."

Dynamic rock mechanic as it pertains to blasting has involved several areas of active research effort. Among the important problems which have been the subject of research are wave mechanics in rocks, mechanisms of rock breakage, cratering, applications of similitude, energy partitioning of explosives, coupling, and other related factors. In some of these areas many problems have received fairly complete answers, while in others, investigations have raised new questions while attempting to answer existing ones. The slabbing mechanism explains many of the phenomena observed in blasting, but is hot the complete answer to observed breakage and fragmentation phenomena. There is currently a gap between coupling experimental results and theory. Applications of similitude to open pit blasting have been made unnecessarily complicated. Basic scaling laws for large true and apparent craters have not been derived for either chemical or nuclear explosives. There are few useful data and little developed theory on the partitioning of energy of explosives in all types of blasting. No suitable mathematical model has been developed which will describe the stress waves in rock which are responsible for rock breakage: Significant progress has been and is being made in these areas of research, however. ELASTIC AND NONELASTIC WAVES Complete solutions for spherical wave equations in viscoelastic media are not available in the literature. Equations for certain viscoelastic models do show limited promise, however, of being applicable to rock masses, particularly for pulse type phenomena. A series of laboratory blasting and ball mill grinding tests have been done on four different types of hard and competent rocks. The results show that exposing these rock types to a higher level of explosive energy will enhance their grindability. True blasting optimisation should therefore look at the whole comminution process from solid rock to a marketable product.

ANFO was being used as one of the blasting agents on a construction site in New England. Groundwater was encountered in numerous blast holes. The blasting contractor was employing typical explosives loading procedures for wet conditions. An abutter to the project complained that blasting caused her well water to have an odd taste and smell. Through testing, it was determined that there were hydrocarbons and nitrates in the well water. Several days later a second neighbor complained of foul tasting water; again it was determined that hydrocarbons and nitrates were present.

Cave mining is an underground mass mining technique. The largest projects, which are known as ‘super caves’, produce hundreds of thousands of tons of ore per day, which involves large footprints with considerable column height, and have a life of mine of over 20-40 years. These operations are typically located deep, under high stresses and in competent rock masses, making initiation and propagation of the caving process harder to manage. These challenges must be confronted by optimizing the fragmentation of the orebody to achieve smaller size blocks that will result in consistent caving and improved flow of the ore from the drawpoints. To achieve better performance from the drawpoints, preconditioning is applied to fragment and damage the material required to cave. We present a proposed design for preconditioning in underground mines, considering the challenges that these large-scale mines are already facing, based on a comprehensive analysis of current design parameters, case studies, and sensitivity analyses using numerical models.

In response to concerns over greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and an imposed cost in some jurisdictions, many mining houses have committed to reductions in their GHG emissions. However, mining faces particular challenges in this regard, notably from increasing strip ratios. Furthermore, mining activity around the globe is not expected to decrease in the foreseeable future as mineral demand is driven up by the aspirations of rapidly-developing nations. Novel approaches will thus be needed if any reductions in energy consumption and GHG emissions of mining are to be achieved.This paper presents some directions for the mining industry to pursue in reducing their GHG impact, focusing on the difference that blasting methods can make. Importantly, large productivity and revenue gains can also be realised from these methods.Key directions considered here include optimising resource recovery and quality through:reducing coal damage and loss from throw blastingrecovering thin coal seamsproducing cleaner coal with less dilution.Blast design can also significantly improve the productivity of surface mining by:improving muck pile shapingimproving mine equipment productivityimproving scheduling.We show how a particular blasting method can eliminate coal loss in overburden throw blasting and can lead to large increases in coalmine profitability. Thin seams that were previously wasted can also be recovered with this method. Furthermore, the method has been implemented to combine several separate drill and blast cycles into a single cycle, leading to productivity gains.An illustrative example is given to show how increased coal recovery can increase revenues and more than offset any potential GHG emissions liabilities. First, I want to thank my co-author, Leon del Valle for his help and collaboration in the preparation of this paper, and also ORICA S.S. our explosive supplier and contractor at the Refugio mine site for their collaboration. The Southern Andes Mountains present a number of challenges for mining operations, and associated blasting operations. This region of the world, in Peru, Bolivis, Chile and Argentina is an area of rapid growth in precious and base metal mining, and will continue to be a large growth area for explosives products and services. This paper will attemp to discuss some of the special considerations encountered in operating a safe and effective blasting program at high elevation and under extreme weather conditions, as well as outlining a recent improvement in blasting techniques at the Refugio gold mine in northern Chile. This paper is presented from a mine operator's perspective, which may be a bit of a disappointment for some of you interested in a detailed technical review of our program. It willl, however, provide an insight in how in-pit blasting techniques tie into the metallurgical processes at a modern precious metal mine and thereby become a key elemnet in its success.

This paper will discuss the issues associated with blasting in an urban mining environment that have been addressed by Winstone Aggregates at the Mt Wellington Quarry. These issues include - control of vibration and air overpressure, repeatability of shot performance, fragmentation on an extremely low maximum instantaneous charge, compliance with Territorial Authority regulations and perception. Over the last two years, in order to address these issues, Winstone Aggregates have undertaken a programme of continuous improvement, which has included; ò implementation of new technology; ò revising site procedures; ò conducting an investigation into the structural response of local buildings; ò investigating safe extrapolation; ò extensive public consultation; ò establishing credibility during the consent process; ò identification of perception issues; and ò building relationships and trust with neighbours. The issues addressed at the Mt Wellington Quarry have increasing significance for traditionally rural mining operations, as the input of the local community being urban or rural, increases. New and existing operations have the potential to adopt best practice now, building trust with the community and raising the profile of the industry.
