Advanced copper materials for conducting applications require an optimal combination of high mechanical strength at ambient and moderately elevated temperatures together with superior electrical and thermal conductivity. Mechanical alloying under repeated cooling of the milling vials in liquid nitrogen has been applied to produce ultra-fine grained (UFG) oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) copper with a high yield strength at ambient temperature. In the present study ODS copper was manufactured by mechanical alloying of copper powder and 3% by volume of incoherent oxide dispersoids. During the high-energy milling a homogeneous distribution of fine dispersoid particles (diameter nearly 100 nm) can be achieved in the powder. Samples with a density of more then 97% of theoretical value were produced by uniaxial hot pressing under 650 MPa at 600°C for 20 minutes. The high yield strength at ambient temperature can be described by a linear superposition of the Orowan stress for particle hardening and of ultra-fine grain strengthening according to the Hall-Petch mechanism. Simultaneously, a best value of 75% IACS could be obtained for the electrical conductivity. The creep behaviour of ODS copper in the temperature range from 500°C to 700°C is described within the frame of diffusional creep deformation.

Anhydrous zirconium tetrafluoride can be used as a precursor for the manufacturing of nuclear-grade zirconium metal. This can be done by fluorinating plasma-dissociated zircon with ammonium bifluoride in a batch reactor. This paper describes the batch process. It was proved that anhydrous zirconium tetrafluoride can be manufactured by this route as confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The process shows potential for scaling up to the kilogram scale and possibly the tonnage scale.

Fe-26Si-9B (wt per cent) alloy has been identified as a potential high-temperature phase change material (PCM) due to its attractive properties, such as its high latent heat of fusion and low volumetric change during solid/liquid transition. For the successful utilisation of this alloy into thermal energy storage (TES) systems, the development of a cost-effective production method is essential. Presently, the Fe-26Si-9B alloy is produced by mixing FeSi alloys with either pure boron element or FeB alloys. However, the use of pure boron is financially prohibitive, and the carbothermic reduction results in high greenhouse gas emissions and high energy consumption in the production of FeB alloys. In this regard, our study proposes a silicothermic reduction method to produce Fe-26Si-9B PCM by using FeSi alloys and B2O3-based oxides. Accordingly, the influence of various parameters on the production process was investigated, including operating temperature, holding time, B2O3 content in the added oxides, and initial Slag/Metal (S/M) ratio. Based on the experimental results, the optimal parameters for producing FeSiB alloys with over 9 wt per cent boron were determined. Consequently, it was documented that the FeSi alloys and the added oxides enriched with 50– 65 wt per cent B2O3 should be subjected to temperatures ranging from 1550–1650°C, maintain an initial S/M ratio exceeding 1, and ensure a holding duration beyond 1 hr. Moreover, the energy consumption of this process was estimated to be ~1.86 MWh/t metal and the mass loss was lower than 7 per cent. Therefore, silicothermic reduction offers a sustainable approach for producing FeSiB alloys with a boron content above 9 wt per cent.

"New metal working processes, such as the mashy-state mixing, mashy-state forging, mashy-state rolling and mashy-state extrusion are developed and applied to manufacture the so-called particle reinforced metals, fiber reinforced metals, particle reinforced cladding metals and so forth. These metal-ceramics composites are made of metal sheets, metal powders, ceramics particles and ceramics fibers. The mashy-state processes are also used to work those composites into bars, wires, tubes, plates, sheets, machine parts and other products. The working conditions necessary to manufacture sound composite products are clarified and the mechanical properties of the products are investigated. Through the investigation, it becomes clear that the mashy-state processes are useful and effective to manufacture metal-ceramics composites. It is al so known that these processes may be applied in various ways to development of new metal matrix compounds. IntroductionThe so-called metal-ceramics composites and processes to manufacture them are now being widely investigated in order to comply with increasing demands for new materials with novel and excellent mechanical properties and functions. The metal-ceramics composites are expected to have superior characteristics with respect to the elastic modulus, hardness, anti-wear resistance, high temperature strength and other mechanical properties to those of conventional metallic materials.The present authors ha v e been investigating into new metal working processes which are based upon the characteristics of metals and their alloys in the mashy-state. In the mashy-state, the metal (or alloy) includes both of the solid and liquid components. According to the fact that the partial melting takes place and the liquid component usually exists at grain boundaries, the metal in the mashy-state has quite different mechanical properties from those of the metal in the solid-state. Because of that the bonding force among grains is very weak due to the partial melting occurred at grain boundaries, the mashy metal has distinctively low flow-stress and high deformability. The mashy metal splits into grains or particles and sticks to others very easily. It is so soft as to be stirred up just like a lump of sherbet, but it is sufficiently viscous to be mixed up with other materials, such as ceramics particles and ceramics short-cut fibers."

Thus it can be seen that upfront modelling of a design concept, or modelling of manufacturing processes in a plant, can play an important role in effectively ensuring the overall design and manufacturing route is carried out in an expeditious manner. In the paper various scenarios are considered with respect to modelling the microstructure and/or process, in various manufacturing processes. Also considered are the effects of service condition on the manufactured product in terms of creep and fatigue.

Os principais testes laboratoriais para obtenção de propriedades de escoamento dos materiais serão descritos. Os testes necessitam de pequenas quantidades de amostras representativas do material e os parâmetros levantados alimentam a metodologia de análise de escoamento de sólidos ou softwares de simulação numérica, e são essenciais para a correção de equipamentos defeituosos ou dimensionamento de novos equipamentos.

No ano de 2016 foi desenvolvido um importante projeto na Gerdau Mineração relativo ao pilar produtividade: a consolidação da Manutenção Compartilhada na Gerência do Beneficiamento Mineral. A Manutenção Compartilhada, ou autônoma, é um programa que capacita os colaboradores a realizar manutenção, pequenas inspeções, além das operações das plantas de beneficiamento, através da criação da carreira de Operador Mantenedor em sua estrutura. Alinhado com o mapa estratégico da unidade, o projeto teve por objetivo consolidar um novo conceito de estrutura de carreira das equipes de Operação e Manutenção nas plantas de beneficiamento. Buscando maior simplicidade, aumento da produtividade e capturando as oportunidades de sinergia entre as equipes de Operação e Manutenção, o projeto reduziu significativamente o custo de pessoal e resultou em maior autonomia e oportunidades de crescimento para as equipes envolvidas.

A estratégia de manutenção de locomotivas da VLI sofreu significativa modificação após a implementação de propostas de consultores americanos, baseadas principalmente, na execução de atividades fora de oficina, realizadas em estruturas chamadas de “Track Service”, estruturas as quais contam basicamente com uma vala para inspeção na parte inferior das locomotivas. Dessa forma, foi possível capturar diversos ganhos em custeio e redução de investimentos, como por exemplo o aumento de periodicidade entre manutenções preventivas e redução do projeto da nova oficina de Paulínia.

DURING the past year a survey was conducted by the Committee on the Promotion of Student Interest in Coal Mining to determine whether the program as laid down in past years was operating effectively. It is a source of satisfaction and pleasure to be able to report considerable headway among operating companies in putting cooperative scholarship plans into operation. In previous committee reports the pioneer work along this line by Eugene McAuliffe, president of the Union Pacific Coal Co., has been cited. That Company now has in its employ, in responsible positions, three men who received their education under such scholarship plans. One student under a similar plan is now studying at the Colorado School of Mines.

Maori economic development still remains an enigma to many people some 157 years after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. It has only been in the last decade as a result of increasing pressures from Maori to recognize and settle grievances arising from the Treaty and the resulting compensation issues that "mainstream" has begun to sit up and take notice. While Treaty settlements such as the Tainui, Ngai Tahu and Fisheries settlements have gained prominence as a source of economic potential for Maori, there are significant existing assets owned by Maori worth an estimated $4.6 billion that add an exciting new dimension to Maori contribution to New Zealand's enterprise economy.   Despite the fact that many claims have yet to be resolved, Maori are clearly shifting from grievance to development mode as evidenced by their focus on capacity building through education, strategic alliances nationally and internationally and the significant growth of nett asset worth of Maori interests in a number of industry sectors.   In essence, Maori provide a large un-tapped economic potential in New Zealand. The years of relative economic obscurity appear to have wetted their appetite for positive growth and economic independence. Given current trends, it would not be unrealistic to expect the asset base of Maori to double in value over the next decade and to see the emergence of Maori owned Corporates not only within the New Zealand economy but also trading actively in the global market place.

Despite the assertion above, this paper is not about to provide delegates with the answer to whom they ought to consult or identify the expectations that Maori might have in regard to the consultation process. It would be a very brave person indeed who would venture an opinion on such a sensitive subject. There are no short cuts to finding out what expectations Maori might have on any given situation. Nothing can be taken for granted. What this paper will attempt to do however is provide practical insights into what might be on the minds of Maori interests as they deal with the issues associated with mineral resources, particularly those under Treaty of Waitangi Claim. The Treaty of Waitangi has a significant bearing on the current debate between Maori and the Crown regarding ownership of mineral resources in New Zealand. The Waitangi Tribunal is currently hearing a case presented by a number of Iwi over the ownership of oil and gas resources in Taranaki and Hawkes Bay. Others will follow. The Crown and Maori have never been able to settle differences over ownership rights without resorting to legal action and it looks like this scenario is about to be repeated in regards to minerals. The Crown has a duty to actively protect the Maori interest. This is a fundamental expectation in the relationship between Maori and the Crown. In the case of minerals, Maori have yet to see the Crown do its duty. The impact on developers has become evident through Maori objections to consent applications as the issues of mineral right remain unresolved.

The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company has been in the business of mining and exploration since its incorporation in 1906. The Company has reports written as early as 1890. Consequently, its files contain a very large number of reports, and also of maps, of ail descriptions. REPORTS Before describing the filing of maps, a brie{ note on our general system of filing reports will perhaps clarify the discussion. Reports of a non-periodic nature, primarily those based upon examinations by field engineers, are separated from all other data and filed in what we know as the Mine Series System. Each property on which reports are written is given a serial number, known as the Mine Series Number. This serial number is assigned at the time the first report is filed and it remains permanently identified with the property, regardless of its state of activity. Our mine series numbers now total over 5,000. The serial number for a property may be found by referring to an alphabetical index of properties. Lignite deposits in Poland occur within clastic Tertiary series at the depth suitable for opencast mining. Aboundant aquifers with the good quality waters that should be protected against contamination or depletion often accompany them. Landscape and underground water protection are the main regional environ-mental factors that limit the possibility of exploration and mining; presented on map of lignite bearing series distribution allow to delimit areas "free" for exploration and mining and areas where some limitations can be met up to no admittance of any industrial activity.

Ground water, one of Florida's most valuable resources, is also one of its most abundant. The State is fortunate to have several prolific ground- water reservoirs that yield tremendous quantities of water to wells and to some of the world's largest springs. These ground-water reservoirs, or aquifers are of two types artesian and nonarteaian. Ad artesian aquifer is one that contains water under sufficient pressure to rise above the top of the oontaining formation. A nonartesian aquifer is one that contains water which is not confined, and the upper water surface (water table) is free to rise and fall. The principal source of ground water in Florida is the artesian Floridan aquifer which supplies most of the water users in the State. Nonartesian sources include the Biscayne aquifer of southeastern Florida, the sand-and-gravel aquifer of extreme western Florida, and a shallow aquifer which lies at depths of less than 100 feet over much of the State. The accompanying map shows the approximate areas where these aquifers are the main source of supply; however, the boundaries do not represent the areal extents of the aquifers. For example, the Floridan aquifer extends beyond the southern boundary shown on the map, but it is not of great economic significance there because the water is highly mineralized. Aquifers other than the four described occur in the State, but they are, for the most part, of minor significance. One of these is an artesian aquifer which is formed by permeable zones that occur locally within the confining beds above the Floridan aquifer.

The Floridan aquifer, which underlies all of Florida, yields water with a hardness of less than 180 pmts per million (ppm) in the northwestern part and throughout much of the center of the Slate. In most of the rest of the Stale, the aquifer yields water having a hardness greater than 180 ppm and as much is 1,900 ppm. Hardness of ground water is caused by dissolved salts from the geologic formations through which the water passes or by direct pollution. Sometimes pollution may indirectly increase the hardness of ground water by increasing the acid content and thus increasing the solution of calcium and magnesium salts. Water from deep zones of the aquifer lend to he harder than water from more shallow zones. Only the hardness of water from the upper part of the aquifer is shown.

The Floridan aquifer, which underlies all of Florida, yields water with a sulfate content of less than 50 parts per million in the north-western part and throughout most of the center of the State. In the southern part of Florida and along the most of the east coast, the sulfate concentration generally exceeds 100 parts per million and is as much as 1,700 parts per million. The sulfate concentration tends to be higher in the deeper zones of the aquifer. This map shows the sulfate concentration in the upper part of the aquifer. Sulfate is found in almost all natural water. Sulfate in rainwater is dissolved from impurities and gases in the atmosphere. Rankama and Sahama (1955, p. 314) report that the average sulfate content of rainwater is two parts per million; however, concentrations have been as high as 283 parts per million. Much of the sulfate in rainwater comes from hydrogen sulfide gas which is generated in shallow water on the continental shelves. The combustion of bituminous coal used for heating and industrial purposes seems to be an important local source of sulfate.
