A conventional mechanical anchor bolt consists of a smooth bar threaded at the anchor end, with a conical wedge, and a mechanical shell anchor. When the smooth bar is torqued, the conical wedge pushes the shell anchor against the borehole wall. Coal mines use mechanical bolts in addition to other types of bolts to control the deformation and stabilize the yielded coal ribs. Limited research has been conducted to understand how a mechanical anchor performs in a coal rib. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted the study described in this paper to define the loading characteristics of mechanical bolts (stiffness and capacity) installed in coal ribs at five underground coal mines. Standard pull-out tests were performed in this study to define the loading characteristics of a mechanical rib bolt. Based on the strength of the coal seam and the conditions of the coal mines, the bolts were installed at different amounts of torque. A typical tri-linear load-deformation response was obtained from these tests. It was found that the anchorage capacity depends on the coal strength, and the anchorage stiffness depends on the installation torque. The outcome of this research provides essential data for rib support design. INTRODUCTION Rib falls are a serious hazard in underground coal mines. In the last 10 years, rib failures have resulted in 17 fatalities, representing 52% of the ground-fall fatalities in underground coal mines in the United States (MSHA, 2018). Although resin bolts has been used increasingly in the last few years to control coal ribs, mechanical bolting (mainly expansion-shell bolts) is still used in many underground coal mines. Recently, NIOSH researchers surveyed 90 sites in 14 underground coal mines in the Eastern United States and found that 79% of the mines determine their rib support requirement based on the depth, mining height, and the loading conditions, of which 35% use the conventional mechanical bolts. Conventional mechanical bolts are preferable for rib support because they do not require the miners to be too close to the rib during rib bolting. Hence, using the conventional mechanical rib bolts can reduce the risk of injuries and fatalities during the installation process. The mechanical bolt or the point-anchored bolt is the oldest type of rock bolt that is still in use today. The point-anchored bolt is a tensioned bolt anchored down the hole with a mechanical expansion shell or a grouted medium (Peng and Tang, 1984). Figure 1 shows the components of the mechanical anchor bolt. The mechanical anchor bolt consists of a plug, a shell anchor, a headed smooth bar with the top end threaded, a bearing plate, a hardened washer, and sometimes a friction-reducing washer. The shell anchor can be either standard or bail type. The shell of the standard type is held in place by a nut, while the bail anchor uses a strap to hold the shell in place (Peng, 2008). The diameter of the smooth bar is generally 5/8 in for the #5 bolt or 6/8 in for the #6 bolt. The diameter of the hole that the bolt is inserted into must be carefully controlled since an oversized hole can result in poor anchorage (Moss, 1971). The anchorage is obtained by applying torque to the bolt head, which in turn pulls the wedge down in the shell and expands the serrated leaves against the sides of the hole-wall. In the resin-grouted anchor, the resin replaces the mechanical expansion shell at the end of the hole. The anchorage is achieved by bonding between the resin, bolt, and the hole-wall.

"Underground coal mines use mechanical bolts in addition to other types of bolts to control the rib deformation and to stabilize the yielded coal ribs. Limited research has been conducted to understand the performance of the mechanical bolts in coal ribs. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted this work to understand the loading characteristics of mechanical bolts (stiffness and capacity) installed in coal ribs at five underground coal mines. Standard pull-out tests were performed in this study to define the loading characteristics of mechanical rib bolts. Different installation torques were applied to the tested bolts based on the strength of the coal seam. Guidelines for modeling mechanical bolts have been developed using the tri-linear load-deformation response. Improved roof control in high deformation tailgate environments has been achieved over the last decade through development of stiffer and increased capacity standing support products. æThe CanÆ is one such development, being a steel cylinder containing a weak cementitious fill, designed to essentially fold in upon itself whilst maintaining strength. A laboratory study to better define the relative load contributions of the steel cylinder and fill, the confining interaction between these components and most importantly, the potential impact of varying the steel and/or fill properties is described. This would enable the support engineer to ædial-upÆ the desired strength and stiffness properties and optimise the standing support design with respect to load capacity, stiffness, weight (handling) and cost. Design curves to optimise strength based on steel casing thickness, fill strength (confined and unconfined) and æCanÆ geometry were established. Scaled-down (one-third) samples were used in the test program and found to adequately reflect the loading behaviour of full-scale versions, thereby providing significantly greater scope for further product development at less expense compared with testing full-scale products.

Based on underground measurements made at the Nova Scotia coal mines of the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, this paper presents a comparison between the physical properties of hardwood packs and steel friction props when used for longwall support. The probable loads sup-ported by steel friction props on a longwall face at both the Dominion No. 20 Colliery and the Princess Colliery are delineated, and the results of the tests are presented in graphical form. It is concluded that the steel friction props are more efficient than the hardwood packs that they replaced as roof supports. Introduction AN evolution in the methods of longwall face support is taking place in the Sydney coalfield. Longwall face support had consisted primarily of timber props and hardwood packs. In 1957, however, at the Princess Colliery, Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia, the first longwall was equipped with steel friction props. At the present time, eleven longwall faces are supported on wood and sixteen faces are carried on steel friction props.

The paper begins by defining local content and its scope at the subnational level. Specific recommendations for the design of local content policies to mitigate social, economic and governance risks are developed. The document then offers some recommendations regarding the role of partners in design, implementation, monitoring, and enforcement of local content policies.

Three-dimensional velocity tomograms were generated on a daily basis to image mining-induced changes to the overburden above a longwall mine. The hypothesis was that a coherent redistribution of seismic velocity, due to the development of high-stress zones, could be imaged at the mine scale. Seam depth was 360 m and source location depth varied from 100 to 1000 m. Sixteen geophones were distributed over a 600 by 600 m square area on the surface above the mine. More than 12,500 events were recorded over an 18 day period. The recorded seismicity provided input for the local-earthquake tomography code, SIMULPS. Eighteen tomograms were generated and high-velocity regions correlated well with high abutment stresses. Additionally, the high-velocity regions were observed to redistribute as the longwall face retreated. These results indicate that velocity tomography can be used to provide a better understanding of temporal changes within a rock mass, and can potentially be used to produce a better understanding of the mechanisms that lead to unanticipated ground failures.

Richter magnitudes for seismic events were calibrated for use as a Local magnitude scale in the West Rand (WR), Far West Rand (FWR), and Klerksdorp–Orkney–Stilfontein–Hartebeesfontein (KOSH) gold mining areas. Richter magnitudes are currently calculated from seismograms recorded by local surface cluster networks using tabulated calibration values for Southern California, published in 1958. The Richter (1958) model is incorrect for distances of less than 30 km and should be applied only to crustal earthquakes in regions with similar attenuation properties to those of Southern California. When compared to the South African National Seismograph Network (SANSN), the cluster networks, on average, overestimate seismic event magnitudes by approximately 0.1 of a magnitude unit. A calibrated Local magnitude scale was derived by means of a multiple regression analysis between the Local magnitudes reported by the SANSN and the largest zero-to-peak trace amplitudes measured on the cluster network horizontal seismograms, after modelling the attenuation of the seismic waves as these progress from the epicentre to the station position. Magnitudes reported by individual stations for the same event show a significant scatter around the average magnitude owing to the near-surface amplifications of the seismic waves at the recordings sites. Average magnitude should be estimated using as many magnitudes of individual stations as possible to ensure an accurate estimate. Larger event magnitudes should be compared with those recorded by the SANSN.

Since 2012, Ghana has been implementing local procurement regulations in the mining sector to broaden and deepen linkages between mining and other sectors of the economy. The regulations have been implemented in collaboration with the mining industry. This paper offers an in-depth analysis of how the local procurement regulations and related initiatives have been implemented so far. Primary data gathered with semi-structured interviews and secondary sources of data indicate a steady improvement in both in-country procurement and local manufacturing of inputs for the mining industry. There are, however, some challenges relating to tariff structure and support (financial and technical) for local suppliers and manufacturers to meet high standards and demands of the mining industry. This calls for a well-thought-out strategy and programme of activities to sustain and improve on progress made.

A world-class example of sustainable development in practice, the Local Resource Development Initiative (LRDI) grew from agreements between the Ambatovy nickel mine developers and the Government of Madagascar. A program of training and community development, the LRDI aims to maximise local benefits by optimising the integration of local resources during the construction period of the mine. By local resources, we mean the local labour force as well as local goods and services. Begun in 2007, the foundation of the LRDI is to integrate local resources into the mining project and where gaps are identified, design and implement training, mentoring and other programs to fill those gaps. The principal accomplishments are: the establishment of training centres that trained over 4000 people in little over one year, 96 per cent of whom hired to work at the mine; a support program for local micro, small and medium enterprises that has led to the award of 65 contracts for goods and services with training and mentoring of over 100 local businesses; and a number of special projects that have, among other results, strengthened local agricultural development and created employment for young people. The LRDI provides unique insights into key indicators and lessons learned to strengthen the social and economic sustainability of mining projects in developing countries. The paper will discuss these in terms, among others, of: the importance to project success of upstream planning to address socio-economic issues; the role of civil society and other local partners to strengthen and expand sustainability outcomes, and to spur governments to demand that major projects promote economic and social sustainability; and the integration of mine sustainability with sustained regional social and economic development.

Reconciliation of metal production from a sublevel cave (SLC) mining operation is a complicated process. SLC reconciliation is unlike reconciliation for open stope operations, where a tonnage of extracted ore can be assigned to an exact volume of in situ ore, and a direct comparison made between the estimation of contained metal and actual metal production. In SLC operations the ore extracted from a particular SLC drawpoint will be composed in part from the parcel of freshly blasted in situ material, in part from varying components of ore material (from cave stocks) flowing down from other previously mined areas vertically above the current draw position and in part from external dilution. This leads to difficulties in reconciling production grades against estimated grades. The problem is that we know how much metal we have produced but we can not precisely say where it has come from. Metal production reconciliation is fundamental in assessing ore reserve estimation accuracy and performance and in determining a draw management strategy for SLC mining. In terms of contained metal, differences in extracted metal compared to in situ metal represent changes to cave stocks. To generate local estimates of the cave stocks, differences in metal for each ring are treated as additions to or subtractions from a series of vertical columns of stocks extending throughout the height of the cave. The sum of metal differences (extracted versus in situ) for each vertical column results in a residual metal map at any particular mining level. The metal maps show areas where the metal production has been greater than or less than expected. The maps also highlight areas in the cave where residual metal is located, areas where targeted overdraw can reduce cave stocks.

The meeting Was called to order by Vice-Chairman Albert Sauveur, Who introduced the speaker of the evening, Utley Wedge, of Ardmore. Pa. Mr. Wedge read a, paper on the chloridizing roasting of copper ores, Which lie illustrated With a stereopticon, and Which will be published in full by the Institute. After Mr. Wedge had closed his paper, Which was received with great interest by all the members. the following discussion took place: Professor Hofman said that iron was formerly thought to bo essential to the Henderson process, but that it is not absolutely essential. Mr. Wedge said that., as far as he knew, the presence of some sulphates Was an absolute necessity, and that lime ores can be worked satisfactorily, although lime has an effect on the subsequent leaching. He added that the low fuel consumption of the latest Wedge furnace is a result of direct application of the combustion gases to the ore. Ten per cent. of fuel Was needed with the muffle furnace. By direct firing lie has been able to reduce the fuel needed to from 2 to 4 per cent. In the latest types of furnaces the uses from the upper hearth are not used. There is doubtless some tem-perature at Which the loss from copper chloride volatilization becomes serious, but in practice on Rio Tinto ores troublesome losses are not experienced.. The copper apparently does not become volatile at the temperatures where we would expect that it would. There are doubtless ores in which there would be serious danger from losses from this source. The latest furnaces do not use the high temperatures that Were needed in the former single-hearth Wedge furnaces.

A Meeting of the San Francisco Section was held on May 7, 1917. Chairman Shockley was in the Chair. The Section was honored by the presence of President Moore and Secretary Stoughton of the Institute. C. W. Merrill introduced President Moore, who then spoke to the Section on the Aims of the Institute. He discussed the possibility of improving the standards of membership by introducing a classification of membership. The present rigid investigation of applicants was pointed out by him. He spoke of the important influence that the local Sections can exert on the Institute and of the importance of sociability and informality at the meetings. Secretary Stoughton, who was introduced by the Chairman, emphasized somewhat the same points. He mentioned the need for making the Bulletin of the Institute more, interesting than it is at present, this to be accomplished by raising the necessary funds by increased advertising. He asked for an expression of opinion on this point. He. said that the employment department of the Institute is now used extensively. At the request of Mrs. Mark L. Requa, Mr. Stoughton. announced that a San Francisco branch of the Woman's Auxiliary of the, Institute was being formed and asked that the ladies of the members' families send in their names to Mrs. Requa or to the Secretary of the Institute.

A joint meeting of the local sections of the several national engineering societies represented in San Francisco was held at the Engineers'. Club on Thursday evening, Sept. 26, 1918. The subject for the evening, "Fuel Conservation," was ably discussed by a-number of representatives of the Federal Administration and by engineers interested in the generation and utilization of all kinds of power on the Pacific Coast. The following extracts from papers presented at this meeting have been selected as being of the greatest interest and value to members of this Institute. Problems of the Fuel Administration ALBERT E. SCHWABACHER.-America's war needs call for 100,000,000 more tons of coal this year than in 1917, and 200,000,000 tons more than in 1914, when the war started, and this increase must come from a weaker man-power than that of 1917. It must be transported by a railroad system that has not been improved since the war started, and has been burdened with inconceivably greater demands than were made upon it before the war. This tremendous increased demand must be met by most intensive work in three directions; increased production, efficient conservation, and a distribution system which will insure against lost motion. While every European country has decreased its coal production since the war began, the United States has mined 50,000,000 tons more coal, during the first year of the war, and will increase this by another 50,000,000 the present year. Every 8 days there are being mined and transported as great a weight of coal as of the entire wheat crop of the United States. Of the 735,000,000 tons of coal which must be made available for consumption by our railroads, ships, war industries and people, 100,000,000 tons will come from the anthracite fields, the remainder from the bituminous fields. In 1917 there were produced about 330,000,000 bbl. of oil, and this year an additional amount over last year's production, of approximately 23,000,000 bbl. will be required. Water power developed 5,000,000 hp., the demand greatly exceeding the available supply.

The thirty-ninth meeting of the Boston Section was held at the Engi- neers? Club on Monday evening, Dec. 4, 1916. Thirty-three members and guests sat down to dinner; There were present as section guests; Dr. L. D. Ricketts, and Prof. Bradley Stoughton, President and Secretary of the parent society, and each was called upon to speak. Mr. Stoughton spoke of the growth of the Institute during the past year and described the very numerous and important activities, of which the junction of the American Society of Civil Engineers with the other three societies is perhaps the most important. Dr. Ricketts, the advertised speaker of the evening, spoke on Recent Progress in Mining and Metallurgy of Copper Ores. In discussing the improvements in mining, he traced the mining methods from square- set mining to the modified Ohio System now so successfully used at Inspiration: In metallurgy, he described the growth of reverberatory-smelting ant1 allied problems such as the utilization of the waste heat for generating steam. The Field Meeting of the Chicago Section proved to be the most enjoyable meeting ever held by the Section. It took the form of a visit to the Northern Indiana Industrial District where the day was spent inspecting metallurgical plants in Indiana Harbor and East Chicago and in amusement at the Hammond Country Club. The weather was perfect and about 50 members and ladies attended the meeting. An inspection of the plant of the Inland Steel Co. occupied the morning. The plant was decorated in honor of the occasion and the company provided attractive souvenirs. It was noticed here that many of the ladies displayed an interest in the inspection and an understanding of the processes that would not have shamed professional metallurgists. While the members of the Section seemed to be most interested in the by-product coke ovens and the by-product recovery plant, the ladies enjoyed especially watching the snake-like antics of the red-hot rods in the wire mill. Leaving the steel plant, the Section enjoyed a ride through the district by automobile and arrived at the Hammond Country Club in time for lunch. In the afternoon some of the members inspected the plant of the International Lead Refining Co., at East Chicago, while the rest spent the time at the Country Club in golf, tennis, trap shooting, bridge and other amusements. During the dinner at the Hammond Country Club an informally organized male quartette led the singing in real college boy style. In the evening, E. E. Billow talked on the use of oil burners in metallurgical furnaces, Mr. MacDowell told of the present status of the Potash Industry and the Secretary told of some of the happenings at the Arizona Meeting. CARPENTER The Southern California Section, held a dinner and meeting at. the Sierra; Madre Club, Los Angeles, on Friday evening, Sept. 28, 1915, at which 21 members and guests-were present. The Vice-Chairman, C. Colcock Jones; presided, in the absence of the Chairman. The amendment' to the By-Laws providing for the increase of the Executive Committee from five to seven members, having been formally presented at the annual meeting of June 18, 1915, and duly announced for consideration at this meeting, was voted on and unanimously adopted. Prof. Robert H. Richards of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; made a short address on the subject of ore concentration. The paper on the Geology and Ore Deposits of Mojave, County, Arizona, prepared by F. C. Shrader, was presented to the meeting by the Secretary and was discussed by Allen Burris and Dr. L. D.
