The current edition of The Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code was published in 2012 and, after a transition period, the 2012 edition came into mandatory operation on Dec. 1, 2013. There is a significant change between JORC 2004 (Clause 44) and JORC 2012 (Clause 49) for the reporting of industrial mineral resources and reserves, which should be addressed by ASX-listed players in the industrial minerals space.

"THE SUPER CYCLE IS GONE The utopia of the rising sales volume, for mining companies from 2002-2011, was entirely due to rising production volume and prices. The Australian mining sector experienced an 18 percent annual growth rate in revenues, and 11 percent growth in prices. (1) However, EBIT remained flat during the same time period. In addition, Australian mines saw a 7 percent annual decline in both labor and capital productivity. (2) Mines in the U.S. and Canada produced similar results, whereas the world-wide mining industry has seen a productivity drop of 40% since 2001. (3) The decade “Bull Run” of rising prices was trashed by companies that chased low-quality assets while increasing debt on their balance sheet. It seemed everyone believed the “super cycle” would last forever, while completely ignoring the history of cycle downturns. Worldwide mining operations are as much as 28 percent less productive today than a decade ago, according to new McKinsey research. The results from McKinsey’s new MineLens Productivity Index (MPI), which adjusts for declining ore grades and mine cost inflation, show that the pronounced decline in productivity is evident across different commodities and is seen in most mining players and geographies. (4) McKinsey sees three important areas of focus to address the root causes of productivity decline. 1) Embed effective management operating systems at mines 2) Prioritized operational excellence and capabilities development 3) Focus on innovation Reality has now settled back in and companies are struggling to make ends meet. The basic management staple of controlling costs and improving the production/productivity that was lost in the excitement is now back in play. Traditional cost-cutting approaches, such as across-the-board spending cuts, layoffs, and hiring freezes are only short-term initiatives and will not permanently improve a company’s cost structure or improve long- term competitiveness. This can only be accomplished by engaging front-line employees and empowering them to make necessary improvements in their daily work. It is time for leaders to lead and develop cultures of continuous improvement within their organizations in order to sustain their mining project to the end of mine life. Successful operating managers require two different skill sets of Leadership and Management; knowing how to lead people in their organization and how to manage the work they do."

Engineering properties of rock are essential in most phases of mining from site reconnaissance through mineral processing. Review of the literature indicates, however, that property data is scarce for most coal measure rocks in the United States. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has undertaken a wide-ranging testing program to provide more complete property data for coal strata in the U.S. coal basins. The property data are expected to have application in geophysical exploration, the development of pre- mining and hazard detection probes and instrumentation, mine design, engineering and rock mass classification, subsidence engineering, and ground control. This paper describes the comprehensive program encompassing in situ geological, geophysical, and geotechnical properties and laboratory determinations of acoustic, electromagnetic, physical, mechanical, and index properties and discusses results for 500 ft of coal measures at a minesite in the Northern Appalachian, Eastern Coal Province.

We are thrilled to welcome you to the 2025 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), which will be held in Dallas, TX. This year’s conference will showcase the continued trend of strong industry interest, as there will be a record setting 115 papers being presented over the course of three days. The set of papers compiled in this book captures the latest and greatest information on a broad array of topics within our fascinating tunneling industry. We hope that the compilation of selected papers in this book will provide a comprehensive recap of the conference while also providing a source of future reference for contractors, engineers, and anyone in general who is a student of our beloved and unique industry. Since its inception in 1972, RETC has been the preeminent tunneling forum to promote ideas, tell stories, share lessons learned, and promote new technologies. RETC prides itself on its focus towards highlighting real-world experiences and practical ideas, with the intent to help the entire industry learn from one another and grow. The need for us all to stay sharp and remain on the cutting edge of technology has never been stronger – the technology and ideas that have been applied in aerospace are now attempting to mix with tunneling, and the advancement of AI continues to permeate all industries. However, no amount of technology or AI can fully replace the human element, and in our tunneling industry, the human element is key and is what sets us apart. In tunneling, every project is different, because the ground is always different. We can only take what the ground will give us, and we must rely on our past experiences to get through present day challenges. Most importantly, we must rely on each other. This is the heart of what RETC is all about. For those of you attending this conference, we encourage you to attend as many sessions as possible and engage with your colleagues to discuss during the breaks in between sessions. This sharing of ideas is what keeps us connected and helps to expand our industry. Please also try to engage with the scholarship students and the newcomers who will be in attendance, as it is the new ideas and fresh energy from the next generation that will continue to make our industry thrive into the future. The program chairs thank and greatly appreciate the efforts made by our session chairs, co-chairs, authors, the members of the RETC Executive Committee, and most importantly the SME staff towards making this RETC possible.

Dispute Review/Resolution Boards (DRB’s) are a highly successful dispute avoidance and resolution tool. In a joint effort between the UCA of SME and the Dispute Resolution Board Foundation (DRBF), the authors embarked on an informal assessment of the state of the DRB practice in the tunnel industry from the point of view of the Contractor, Owner, DRB Practitioner, and Attorney. The results of this assessment were presented in a panel discussion at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) in June of 2021. Unmanned mining technology in underground mines offers high efficiency, safety, and low cost. However, ground operators face challenges in accurately perceiving the underground environment through videos. This paper presents an augmented reality (AR) platform developed to enhance the unmanned mining process. The platform uses cameras and 5G technology to transmit high-fidelity video streams to the ground, where key targets are identified and virtual models are registered in the video to enhance the real scene. Tests in the Xinli stope of the Sanshandao gold mine showed the platform’s effectiveness in improving ground operators’ perception and production efficiency.

Kinetics studies and other rate measurements are reviewed in the amine extraction of uranium and of some other related and associated metal ions. Equilibration' is relatively fast in the uranium sulfate systems most important to uranium-hydrometallurgy. Significantly slow; equilibration-has ' been encountered' in some other systems. Most of the recorded rate information, both qualitative and quantitative; has come from exploratory and, process-development development work, while some kinetics studies have been directed specifically toward elucidation of, extraction mechanisms. In contrast to some other extraction systems, relatively little attention has been given to the kinetics of uranium extraction by amines. This is because investigators have not been troubled by slow extractions. Instead, when rate limitations have been of concern in amine extraction (Amex) process developments, they have been mainly from slow phase disengagement rather than from slow equilibration. Nevertheless, taking uranium together with several other elements that are closely related to it or associated with it in typical processes, a considerable body of rate information has been recorded.

"“Industry 4.0” – “Mining 4.0” - perhaps you have already heard of these terms? These keywords signify the next stage of industrial production. The internet and production technologies are growing closer together. Machines can communicate with one another, wherever they may happen to be located. The “Internet of Things” is the appropriate term. But what does SAFETY 7.0 mean? It is both brand new and traditional at the same time. It also has to do with the success of companies, with efficient production. And yet there is a great deal more at stake. It has to do with our lives and our safety – the supreme commodity in this world. What exactly SAFETY 7.0 means, what the number 0 stands for and the meaning of the number 7, and what this all has to do with mining will be explained in the following article. Mining is a fascinating undertaking. Mining is indispensable for a country’s economic development, whatever that may concern: infrastructure, energy supplies or raw materials for industrial production. Mining has brought forth many technological developments and innovations that can currently be found in our daily lives. Mining is impressive, grandiose and repeatedly fascinates mankind with its immense dimensions. Miners throughout the world still work hard and, for this reason, are bound to one another in a special way. In mining, every man looks out for the other; you have to be able to rely on each other. That creates a strong bond. The other side of the coin is that mining and disasters belong to normality in the media and thus also in our perception. Accidents at work and even catastrophes occur in mining, quarries, or raw material operations almost on a daily basis somewhere in the world. They are often associated with extremely serious injuries, or even a fatal outcome, for the miners affected and, in turn, dramatic consequences for the families of those involved. It could be in China, India, Russia, or somewhere in Africa, Asia or America – it mostly does not happen in front of our door or in our neighbour- hood. Perhaps because of this in the daily concert of negative headlines, we do not register these catastrophes any more in our minds. We write them off under the heading “Nothing special”, since there are, day in day out, more terrible news items about wars, civil wars, famines, or ecological disasters. Things only really change if there is a dramatic number of deaths or when we are personally affected, close by in the vicinity, or can witness the rescue action live. Modern mining consistently faces controversy. Public sentiment impacts the permitting and development of mines, so a quality public relations (PR) program for mining companies may improve society’s impression of the mining industry. Developing mines face more permitting challenges than operating mines, which stems from a lack of societal trust given the history of mining and its impact on the environment. Two case studies were selected based on the type of public controversy they face to demonstrate how pervasive permitting issues are in industry. Both Pebble Mine, owned by Northern Dynasty Minerals (NDM), and Black Butte, owned by Sandfire Resources America Inc (SRA), experienced difficulties with their water permitting due to potential risks their mine developments posed to local fish populations. Pebble has, to date, failed in all of their attempts to become permitted due to concern for the water and the fish. Black Butte dealt with the same problems, on a smaller scale, but was able to become permitted. These two mines will be discussed in detail including local history, mine setting, mining history in America, prevalent culture groups, technology development, and intercultural communication competence (ICC). The mining industry needs to evaluate its ICC skills since ICC directly determines the effectiveness of PR. Based on Barna’s Stumbling Blocks for intercultural communication, methods for improving the mining industry’s PR will be suggested in the hope of easing the permitting process for future mines by developing ICC.

At LKAB's plants in Lappland, Sweden, sintered pellets are manu-factured according to three different industrial processes, viz. shaft furnace at Malmberget, straight-grate at Kiruna and grate-kiln at Svappavaara. At present the total annual capacity amounts to 4.7 million tons. However, since it has been decided to erect a new straight-grate plant (2.5 million tons) at Malmberget, and because of the decision to extend and rebuild the existing plants, it is estimated that the annual capacity will be increased to somewhat over 8 million tons by 1973. The great majority of the pellets produced is exported. They are thus reloaded several times and generally speaking roughly handled, resulting in larger or smaller product losses on arrival at the point of use. It is there-fore of great economical interest to have a good control over the transport strength of the pellets by appropriate quality testing at the point of production. In addition to good transport strength, further demands are ob-viously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The blast furnace burden must maintain a good permeability for the gas. The pellets must thus have a favourable size distribution and must not be so weakened by reduction that they disintegrate under the stresses and clog the blast furnace shaft. Furthermore, the burden must have good reducibility. An increase of the rate of reduction can obviously mean increased blast furnace capacity and reduced coke consumption. In order to optimise the properties of the pellets in these respects, the producer must also be thoroughly familiar with their behaviour during reduction, particularly as the customer's interest in the reduction properties of the pellets' has increased over the last few years. Up to now the only quality demands the customer has made have generally had to do with the cold strength and the screen analysis. Thus a quality control of in addition to good transport strength, further demands are obviously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. Underground mining is a dynamic art and science with a diverse set of design, production, and economic criteria that must be considered before selecting an optimal method to extract the ore. While all methods can be technically classified as either self-supported, supported, or caving, the multitude of subsystems and existing variations bear witness to the fact that each orebody is unique and, as such, justifies an individual approach to optimize mineral extraction. In this sense, underground mining is an art. The ability to evaluate the unique characteristics of each ore body and utilize sound engineering principles to design the optimal system constitutes effective method selection. The task by no means ends at this juncture, however. Subsequent implementation requires an ability for modification. Very rarely are all the facts available to make a concrete decision prior to development of the resource. As a result, the risk of a wrong decision can never be eliminated. This requires a significant degree of flexibility with each method. Each unit of exploration, development, or exploitation work contributed to a deposit enhances knowledge of the ore body. The best mining methods are those that correctly account for the known parameters but provide an allowance for change at minimal cost and adapt to unanticipated conditions.

Ask someone what they can tell you about the Royal Canadian Mint and most likely the first thing that they will mention, is coinage. The Royal Canadian Mint manufactures Canada's one-cent coins, nickels, dimes and quarters - over 1 billion per year. Most of these coins use copper and nickel as base material, and all of this metal is mined, refined and processed in Canada prior to being shipped to the mint for coin production. In 1985 alone, 1270 metric tons of Canadian nickel and 2160 metric tons of Canadian copper were absorbed in circulating coinage. July 1987 will have marked the introduction of Canada's new one dollar coin, an important new addition to Canada's monetary system. The first phase of this program will consume about 2,235 metric tons of Canadian nickel in the initial production run. Annual requirements in subsequent years are estimated at 225 metric tons. The Royal Canadian Mint is also a major producer of circulating coinage for foreign countries. Since the state-of-the-art Winnipeg plant swung into full production in 1976 the Mint has struck more than 5.2 billion coins for some 35 nations around the world. 1985 sales have increased almost 6 fold over 1984. 1987 already shows commitments for a further significant increase in volume in this business. The use of Canadian metals in export to foreign nations as coinage adds still more to the Royal Canadian Mint's key role as a major market maker for Canada's mining industry. The success of the Mint in this realm can be directly traced to it's 75 years as one of the world's most important refiners of gold. Because of growing pressure from government and consumers to produce more coal, the mining industry must improve existing techniques and devise more efficient mining methods. Mining of the thicker, shallower and geologically superior coal seams in the western United States is being subjected to increasing pressure from environmentalists; and so in order to meet the demand, the coal industry is exhausting the more accessible surface seams and beginning to mine seam of over 1,000 feet in depth and less than. 30 inches in thickness. The longwall mining system is the natural choice for extracting deep and thin coal seams, as it operates almost independently of the overburden rock stress. Due to the added fact that longwall mining is an inherently more productive method than room and pillar mining, many coal producers are looking to it as a means of increasing productivity without a corresponding cost increase. The consistent rise in application of longwall mining in the United States in the last decade illustrates the excellent potential of this technique for the future. American mining conditions are geologically different from those in Europe where longwall mining has been highly developed and extremely successful. Although numerous successes have been recorded in the U.S. with this mining system, a substantial number of failures have also occurred. These failures are due primarily to roof control problems usually over the face, in the tail entry, or both. Another problem area for American operators contemplating the use of this method has been correct selection of equipment, which should be custom fitted to local mining conditions for optimum productivity. It is essential that correct estimates for chock resistances, support densities, supported and unsupported roof spans, as well as rates of advance and length of working faces be provided to optimize mining conditions. Unless extensive pilot projects are planned engineers must choose their equipment correctly at the outset. A typical investment in longwall equipment will amount to several millions of dollars.

Analytical procedures to determine the amounts of trace elements will be discussed. Other papers will deal with trace elements in streams downstream from coal mines, potential pollution from wastes from coal preparation plants, potential recovery of trace elements, and potential pollution from trace elements as a result of the combustion of coal.

Introduction What drives the price of gold? Supply and demand, of course. But in ways far different from the forces that drive the prices of other major metals, such as steel, aluminum, and copper. Gold, in fact, is one of the few commodities where both buyers and sellers are happy when the price goes up. Current production, production costs, and variations in production have little influence on its price. Gold inventories are so tremendous that current production has small impact on the amounts available to the market at any time. Worldwide gold inventory and production The world's inventories seem to be between 78 and 98 kt (2.5 and 3 billion oz). Since biblical times, the gold miners of the world have produced about 98 kt (3 billion oz), mostly in this century. Only small amounts have been thrown away and most of it - more than 78 kt (2.5 billion oz) - remain in bullion, coins, or jewelry. About 40% is held by central banks and other governmental authorities, 30% by private individuals as bullion or coins, and about 30% as jewelry. Except for some of the jewelry and the few industrial applications, this inventory is constantly available in marketable form at a price. By comparison, gold production is indeed small. The US Bureau of Mines estimates that the world produced 1.5 kt (50 million oz) of gold in 1986. Consequently, production increased world inventories by only 2%. Variations in production have a negligible or very short-term effect on the supply and, consequently, on the markets for gold. Although South Africa mines about 40% to 50% of the world's annual production, continuing labor strife there does not seem to have ruffled gold prices. Determining gold's price Gold prices, however, do determine cutoff grades in the mines and, thus, do influence production. Nonetheless, changes in production have little impact on the inventory supply. Consequently, it has small influence on the price of gold on the market. With a fairly stable supply, price changes are driven by changes in its demand. Unlike other metals, very little of the demand for gold comes from industry. Dental, electronic, and other industrial uses for gold consume less than 46.6 t/a (1.5 million oz per year). It would be safe to assume that such uses are less than 124 t/a (4 million oz per year) for the entire world. Variations in the 124 t (4 million oz), compared to a supply of 78 kt (2.5 billion oz) of supply can have only a negligible effect. Production net of industrial uses adds perhaps 1% annually to world inventories. This could, in time, affect markets. The increase, however, is mostly absorbed by population growth - more people wanting to own gold - and by gold being put in more attractive forms, such as coins. Once every three years the eyes of the construction and mining industry?s turn to Munich, Germany for the bauma trade fair and exhibition. From April 19-25, Messe München International (MMI) will host the 29th edition of this massive show that, despite the recent recession and global financial struggles, has grown yet again. The show, which is completely booked, will take place on a record 555,000 m2 (5.9 million sq ft) of indoor and outdoor exhibition space at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre. More than 3,000 exhibitors are expected to make use of this event. To prepare for the show that highlights some of the largest and most impressive construction and mining equipment in the world, Messe München began working months in advance on getting the infrastructure on the open-air site ready, in time for the arrival of the gigantic machinery exhibits, which started to arrive in March. Part of the preparations include a new entrance at the northwest corner of the exhibition center that was built to regulate visitor flow better. This should help with bauma considering that in 2007 more than 500,000 visitors passed through the gates. ?Although in 2010 the construction machinery sector in many markets worldwide will be recovering only slowly from the recession, we are pleased to report that we are seeing strong demand for exhibition space. This shows that exhibitors regard participation in the world?s leading trade fair bauma as a must, although many are at present having to make cuts in their advertising and trade-fair budgets. We have been particularly surprised by the strong demand for space from exhibitors from markets like China, India and Turkey. The fair is fully booked and many more companies are on the waiting list,? said Eugen Egetenmeir, managing director of Messe München. More than 50 percent of the exhibitors at bauma 2010 come from countries outside of Germany. While the show?s primary focus is on the construction section, it is not as if the mining sector will be difficult to find. With some of the largest equipment in world on display in section C2 (Fig. 1), the mining industry is sure to be well-represented.

The conventional method of mining underground, using narrow rooms and wide pillars, has proven to be poorly adapted to the powerful earth forces that act on underground openings. The high costs of roof bolting, timbering, steel arching, and other means of artificial roof support for both room-and--pillar operations and longwall gate roadways attest to the limitations of traditional mine design. Too often, productivity halts when corners buckle under "cutter roof' stresses, floors heave, and roof strata fall. In the 1960s, an entirely different approach to strata control was developed. The Stress Control Method (SCM) stabilizes failing roofs and heaving floors by removing the cause of failure - highly concentrated stresses around the openings. This is achieved by regrouping three to 10 rooms into a single entry where the rooms are separated by very narrow yielding but stable pillars. SCM employs a specified excavation sequence to redirect earth pressures away from the mine openings. The yield pillars act as scaffolding until a permanently protective secondary stress envelope forms around the entry (lower part of Fig. 1). The result is a dramatic improvement in roof stability and a significant reduction in artificial support costs. Some roof bolting must still be done, mainly to meet Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements. Potash, salt, coal mining The stress control method was first applied to the deep potash mines of Saskatchewan. The new SCM design actually increased room widths to enlarge the stress envelope, redistributing the stress concentration away from the entries (Serata and Schultz, 1972). This resulted in a turnaround from pervasive roof fall/floor heave conditions that threatened operations in the eight new mines opened in the Saskatchewan potash field during the 1960s. In addition to eliminating all roof bolting, SCM successfully stabilized ground conditions and substantially increased productivity over the original design (Serata, 1976, 1982). Similarly, the deep Boulby potash mine of Yorkshire, England, was about to close after various conventional means of combating roof failure had failed. An SCM test area was excavated that resulted in the ground quickly stabilizing without need o artificial support (Serata, 1982; Chilton and Laird, 1982). Another example is the Diamond Crystal salt mine in Louisiana. Here, multiple level mining was being extended from the third to the fourth level downward in the Jefferson Island salt dome. Extensive roof failure was occurring at 396 m (1300 ft) ii the third level. SCM design principles in creased the room size from 24 to 49 m (80 t( 160 ft) on the fourth level at a depth of 457 m (1500 ft). This unprecedented expansion of room width was first questioned and later ap¬proved by MS HA, which expressed satisfaction in seeing the improvement documented by field validation data in 1973. The most recent SUM application to salt mining has been in the Michigan Basin a: Goderich, Ontario. The anticipated abandonment of Domtar Chemicals Group/Sifto Salt Division's deep operation in bedded sale was prevented by a multi-year SCM implementation. The success of SCM in dry mining[lecc] to its application to solution mining of salt This adaptation of the method is now being implemented in bedded salt at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta by Dow Chemical Co., and in St. Clair, MI by International Salt Co. Application of SCM to solution mining in a salt dome is proceeding at Napoleonville. LA by Dow Chemical. The same technology has also been applied to cavern design for the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP), and the compressed air energy storage (CAES)

To reduce concentrate dewatering and drying costs, the Concentrator Division at Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc. investigated available filtration technologies. Numerous methods were explored, including: drum, disk, belt, pressure, hyperbaric, and ceramic media filtration. An economic evaluation of the individual filtration technologies indicated the advantages of ceramic media filtration for Morenci concentrates. This paper discusses the technological development culminating in the first full scale application of ceramic media disk filters in North America. Low moisture contents are obtained at high production rates and greatly reduced operating costs.

In 2009 China mined 2.695 billion metric tones (Gt) of raw coal. It is estimated that only 3-5% or roughly 135 million metric tones (Mt) of these were mined from 300 some surface operations. Except for a dozen or so large modern operations, most of China's surface coal operations are small by western standards, with annual production ranging from a few thousand tones to 300,000 metric tones (mt). Depending on the size of operations, equipment used range from small trucks and shovels to large bucket wheel excavators and draglines in sizable pits. This article provides a brief overview of China's surface mineable coal reserves, mining methods commonly used and increasing environmental concerns; introductions of several large surface operations are also provided.

The metallurgical processing involved in the produc-tion of the new Canadian one dollar coin is reviewed starting with the hydrometallurgical production of pure nickel powder, followed by the powder metallurgy process for the production of nickel strip and coinage blanks, and concluding with the Aureate bronze electroplating and heat treatment procedure. Coinage requirements are then reviewed with regard to economic, public acceptance, and service requirements. Finally the properties of Aureate nickel coinage are presented in the light of the many and varied coinage requirements, and it is concluded that the new Canadian dollar coin exceeds the requirements admirably.
