Many technical professionals (tp)* desire to occupy upper level management positions. But career paths for most scientists and engineers do not extend beyond their specific disciplines. This is unfortunate. Our technical frontiers are expanding so rapdily that it is difficult, if not impossible, to make sound top management decisions without understanding the technical complexities involved. Technical professionals often are not considered for upper level management positions because they lack the managerial and interpersonal skills necessary to become successful administrators. You've heard this before, but a key component of these skills is the ability to communicate. Technical professionals are often unable to communicate as well as they should with nontechnical professionals and nonprofessionals within the organizations that employ them. Communication is important for managerial success Communication is the network of interactions whereby knowledge and understanding are conveyed from one social set to another (Flippo and Munsinger, 1982). In order to be successful, managers must not only be "good" communicators, they must be "effective" communicators as well. Good communication occurs when managers are able to formulate and transmit their messages in such a way that they are received and understood. Effective communication goes one step further: It occurs when recipients accept messages as legitimate and respond to these messages in the manner desired. Before promotion into upper level positions, managers must have developed organizational skills (planning, decision making, organizing, and controlling) and interpersonal skills (directing, influencing, and motivating). Applying these skills effectively is difficult without a highly refined ability to communicate. Effective communication, then, is basic to managerial success. Nowhere, perhaps, has the importance of being able to communicate effectively been emphasized more than in Mintzberg's landmark study of managerial roles (Mintzberg, 1973). Mintzberg's results indicate that executives typically averaged 36 written and 16 verbal contacts a day. These contacts were both important and trivial. They generally occurred in a random manner. Time spent on each varied. Scheduled meetings averaged over an hour. Desk work, telephone calls, and unscheduled meetings required an average of 15 minutes or less. Why technical professionals have difficulty communicating Three reasons why technical professionals do not communicate well are: • The work motivational patterns and personal attitudes of technical professionals are not conducive to effective communication. • Students in technical professions are not encouraged by educational institutions to develop their communication skills. • Organizations do not insist that all technical professionals be able to communicate in the language of business. The work motivational patterns of most technical professionals are indicative of internals and high achievers (Hunt, Salisbury, and Whittington, 1968). As internals, they believe they control their own destinies. As high achievers, they believe that task accomplishment is a primary indicator of success. To ensure a task is completed in the manner desired, tp's attempt to structure and define work situations so they alone are responsible for results. TPs consider the task accomplished when they, and perhaps other tp's, are satisfied with the results. From the tp's perspective, the task may have been completed. From a communication standpoint, two other factors may apply. First, solving the problem required very little interaction (and thus, communication) with others. Second, the tp's, considering the task accomplished, have little concern for how their "technical" answers will be translated to nontechnical persons needing

Many subsidence researchers in the U. S. have developed new empirical function methods to predict subsidence, or attempted to validate some empirical functions developed by foreign researchers for use in the U. S. An attempt is made in this paper to develop a new empirical function to predict a surface subsidence basin due to longwall mining. In the U. S., the emphasis of empirical methods for the subsidence prediction over longwall panels has been in large part on determining the profile functions for the major cross-sections of a subsidence basin. In this approach, the surface monuments are usually laid out along the major cross-sections and thus, the subsidence profiles developed are restricted for subsidence prediction along the major cross-sections. However in practice many monuments or surface structures for which subsidence prediction for damage evaluation is required, are not laid out along the major cross-section of the basin. In such cases, it is difficult to get either the empirical profile function for the cross-sections where these structures are located or to predict their subsidence based on the profile function developed for the major cross-sections. Therefore, there exists a strong need to develop a subsidence basin function with a reasonable degree of accuracy, which can be determined or confirmed by the data of scattered monuments on a surface basin. The same subsidence basin function can also be used for prediction of subsidence for any arbitrary points over a longwall panel. In 1982, He (1) proposed the clastic theory, for which he developed the basic differential equations describing the movement and deformation of overburden due to underground mining, and performed the selection of best solution for the equations. He found that the Weibull dietribution is the optimal solution. The Weibull distribution has three parameters that vary to fit the subsidence profile so well that the profile function derived from it provides a high degree of accuracy in subeidence prediction. B.A. Hancock It is not at all surprising that causticized potato and potato derived amylopectin starch solutions performed much better than their parent starches. Some preparation is required to rupture the starch granules to effect the polymeric adsorption and interparticle bridging necessary for selective flocculation. In laboratory work comparing the deslime performance of causticized and autoclave cooked laboratory corn starch solution preparations, it was found that higher deslime weight rejections, with attendant proportionally greater iron unit losses, occurred with the causticized starch. These results may be specific to the ore involved but they do suggest that cooking and causticizing cause different starch granule rupture and/or starch breakdown, which have an effect on desliming response. I calculated from the data in the article that the slimes product grades were high - 24.3% and 20.3% Fe when 53.7% and 54.5% Fe concentrate products were obtained, respectively, in Table 4, and 21% Fe with a 62.6% Fe concentrate in Table 5 - using the natural tailings sample, which had a head of 34.3% Fe. It may be advisable for the authors to consider different starch preparations in future investigations. The combination of upgrading and selectivity results presented in Table 4 are not as good as the authors suggest. The authors' claim that a system has been developed to produce saleable concentrates from the Kudremukh tailings is quite disconcerting. There are many hurdles yet to be crossed before commercial application of selective flocculation becomes possible because differences between the very small-scale laboratory tests conducted and commercial application are rather large. Among the many differences are varying circuit feed grades that will occur from use of tailings, the apparent face that much lower tailings grades will be encountered in practice (it is much easier to achieve a high concentrate grade with reasonable recoveries using 34.3% Fe tailings as in the study rather than 25.3% Fe tailings grades that the plant apparently averages), the hydraulic nature of the thickeners used in operations compared to the static system used in laboratory tests, the different size distributions that will be obtained from a plant closed grinding-classification circuit, and differences in water used in a plant operation and the laboratory. The authors wrote that it was necessary to overgrind to be sure that the coarse gangue would not settle with the iron oxide floccules. This situation is likely to be exaggerated in commercial operations where it is assumed cyclones would be used for classification. Because cyclone classification is greatly influenced by particle densities, there will probably be an even greater difference in size between the iron and gangue particles in the plant, which would make the gangue slightly coarser still in relation to the iron. This would make the selective flocculation-desliming separations using the procedure employed by the authors even more difficult and, using the dispersant system the authors employed, greater overgrinding would be required. To grind finer to minimize the coarse gangue in the flocculated iron oxides is quite inefficient and appears not to broach the problem. The actual problem appears to be insufficient dispersion of the ground pulp. In this situation, addition of a dispersant would likely be required to attain a sufficiently high pulp dispersion level to efficiently effect a selective flocculation-desliming separation. Although the very coarse particles would still have a tendency to settle with the floccules, it probably would be found unnecessary to overgrind as much as indicated. Use of an optimum combination of dispersant and pH modifying reagents may also significantly improve the selectivity of desliming. Additionally, although it is possible that sufficient dispersion may be obtained by pH control alone in some situations, it is quite probable that added dispersity was obtained in the reported work from using distilled water. It is research experience that distilled water enhances dispersion. In commercial operations it may not be expected that sufficient dispersion will be obtained by pH control alone, unless the water used in the process is by nature quite dispersive. Overall, a change in the Kudremukh tailings dispersant scheme appears necessary where a dispersant is used in conjunction with a pH modifying reagent. With this change, different dispersion-flocculation responses will result that would have to be further evaluated. Therefore, it is still an open question whether an efficient and effective selective flocculation separation using Kudremukh tailings may be obtained that will produce saleable concentrates.

Inertisation is used to enhance the safety of underground mine areas either to avoid the potential for a combustion event or to stabilize a situation after an ignition, fire or heating. The primary objective of a recently completed Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) study was to review coal mine inertisation and in particular to focus on use of the Polish mine fire simulation software Ventgraph to gain better understanding of how various inertisation units interact with the complex ventilation behavior underground during a substantial fire. Critical aspects targeted for examination under the project grant included location of the unit for high priority fire positions, size of borehole or pipe range required, time required for inertisation output to interact with and extinguish a fire, effects of seam gases on fire behavior with inertisation present and main fan management. A major accomplishment of the project has been to take findings from the simulation exercises to develop inertisation related modifications to the Ventgraph fire simulation program in conjunction with the Polish program authors. Selected mines were ?evaluated or audited?as to the ability to deliver inert gases generated from GAG units to high priority underground fire locations .A coding system has been developed and many potential underground mine fire sources cannot be successfully inertized with the GAG docked at the current specified point; this is particularly so for fires in extended areas of workings or in panels. There is a limit to the ability of the GAG jet engine to deliver exhaust down smaller dimension borehole. There is a need to examine the use of the GAG for production or proactive uses in a wider application in Australian mines responding to recovering from mine fires, spontaneous combustion heating?s, elimination of the potential explosibility of newly sealed gobs or inert mines or mine sections on closure. Some of the current uses of low flow inertisation facilities could be more effectively undertaken with the GAG unit.

The Golden Grove Project area is located 220 km (137 miles) east of Geraldton in Western Australia (Fig. 1). The project is a joint venture involving Amax Exploration (Australia) Inc. (Amax), Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd. (EZ), and Esso Exploration & Production Australia Inc. (Esso), each with 31 116% interest, and Aztec Exploration Pty., Ltd. (Aztec), with a 3 1/2% carried and a 3% contributing interest. The venture covers two significant volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits and some 40 km (25 miles) of highly prospective Archean volcanics. During the course of the past 12 years (to 1983), all four companies were responsible for operating the project at one time or another and all influenced the discoveries. The Gossan Hill and Scuddles deposits are typical examples of volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits associated with Archean explosive submarine acid to intermediate volcanic complexes. They are located in the northwesterly trending Yalgoo greenstone belt of the West Australian Archean Shield. Gossan Hill, located in 1972, is essentially a copper deposit with minor zinc lenses; to date, 97 diamond holes have delineated a geological resource* estimated to contain 13 Mt (14.3 million st) of of 3.4% Cu and 13 g/t (0.38 oz per ton) Ag in the main lenses with minor lenses totaling 2 Mt (2.2 million st) of 3.7% Cu and 17 g/t (0.49 oz per ton) Ag and 1.7 Mt (1.9 million st) grading 1.5% Pb, 14% Zn, and 87 g/t (2.8 oz per ton) Ag. Scuddles is a zinc-copper deposit with gold and silver credits. It *Resource estimate provided by Esso for inclusion in Aztec Exploration Pty. Ltd. 1982 Annual Report was discovered in 1979 and, to the end of 198 1, had been delineated with 42 diamond holes. On the basis of this drilling, a geological resource* of 26 Mt (28.7 million st) has been estimated in three coalescing lenses. The lenses comprise 7.5 Mt (8.3 million st) of 2.1 % Cu, 12 g/t (0.35 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.3 g/t (0.009 oz per ton) Au; 7.6 Mt (8.4 million st) of 0.4% Cu, 9.9% Zn, 73 g/t (2.3 oz per ton) Ag, and 0.7 g/t (0.02 oz per ton) Au; and 1 1.0 Mt (1 2.1 mil lion st) of 1.1 % Cu, 9.3% Zn, 8 1 g/t (2.6 oz per ton) Ag, and 1.5 g/t (0.044 oz per ton) Au. Acid production or acid drainage is a major environmental issue that also has negative implications on the aquifer system surrounding the mine tailings area. The approach to controlling acid mine drainage involves physical and geochemical characterization that affect acid production. The material permeability determines the availability of oxygen, which is paramount in acid production in coal rejects, and varies with depth. In this paper the author presents the variation in oxidized pyrite/acid production with depth in black coal mine washery wastes. Chemical kinetic parameters and the diffusive parameters have been used to obtain the variation in oxygen content and the oxidized pyrite content with respect to the depth and time. Its dependence on porosity and moisture content is illustrated.

The year was 1974. The event - the United States Congress was embroiled over what issues should be included in the proposed national surface mining law. The question - what should be done with underground mines? The leading bills ultimately addressed the environmental impacts associated with underground mines including provisions to protect the surface from subsidence impacts. Amid the fears that this subsidence language might discourage underground mining, sponsors of the bill were asked to explain the meaning of the provision that read "to prevent subsidence to the extent technologically and economically feasible." Was this an attempt to limit mining that caused planned and controlled subsidence? Former Deputy Director of the Office of Surface Mining, Dean Hunt, reviewed some of these historical events in a 1985 presentation before the Eastern Mineral Law Foundation. He reported that in 1974 Congressman Morris Udall took the floor to respond to these concerns expressed by other members of Congress and the industry. Mr. Hunt cited Congressman Udall's July 10, 1974 Congressional Record statement: "The House bill contemplates rules 'to prevent subsidence to the extent technologically and economically feasible.' The word prevent led to fears expressed by the Secretary of the Interior Morton, that the effect would be to outlaw longwall mining, with its obvious subsidence ... in fact the bill's sponsors consider longwall mining ecologically preferable and it and other methods of controlled subsidence are explicitly endorsed." Further, the report that accompanied the front-running bill, HR11500, provided the following clarification on the issue of subsidence prevention: "It is the intent of this section to provide the Secretary with the authority to require the design and conduct of underground mining methods to control subsidence to the extent technologically and economically feasible in order to protect the value and use of surface lands. Some of the measures available for subsidence control include: (1) leaving sufficient original mineral for support; (2) refraining from mining under certain areas---or (3) causing subsidence to occur at a predictable time and in a relatively uniform and predictable manner. This specifically allows for the uses of longwall and other mining techniques which completely remove the coal." It is clear from the preceding statements that Congress considered the removal of all the coal and causing subsidence in a predictable and uniform manner to be equal to or better than leaving support coal and causing no subsidence. While the actual provision in the bills talked of preventing subsidence, a subsequent exception made it clear that the real intent was to control it. This is evidenced in the specific planned subsidence language that appeared in the bills and ultimately in Section 516 (b) (1) of PL95-87, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act. It reads: "...adopt measures...to prevent subsidence ... except in those instances where the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner..." In spite of this historic record that supports controlled subsidence, something has been lost in the implementation. The primary focus by many regulators over the past few years has been on the "prevent" aspect irrespective of mining method being used. This has appeared to change the original intent of Congress from one of controlling subsidence to one of minimizing damage. The objective of this report is to review some of the current regulatory issues that impede full extraction mining and offer some suggestions on possible ways to deal with these issues.

Arsenic sulfide [orpiment, realgar, amorphous AsS and As2S3] oxidation rates were measured in mixed flow reactors at pH~2 and temperature of 25-30oC. The measured oxidation rates for arsenic sulfide solids by dissolved oxygen are in the range of 10-11 to 10-10 mole m-2 s-1 after being normalized to final surface area. The order of arsenic sulfide oxidation rates decreases at pH~2 from amorphous AsS > realgar > orpiment > amorphous As2S3. In comparison to pyrite, arsenic sulfide oxidation rates are approximately 1.5 to 15 times slower than pyrite oxidation rates at pH~2.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion widens the existing four-lane bridgetunnel corridor to eight lanes through construction of two parallel tunnels, interstate widening, and bridge expansions. As part of the design-build contract, a supplemental geotechnical investigation was completed to support the design. The investigation for the subaqueous tunnel segment consisted of over 48,400 linear feet of drilling and 7,100 laboratory tests. This paper discusses the challenges of planning and executing a large-scale geotechnical investigation for underground works in a marine environment and the use of big data for effectively managing, interpreting, and transmitting data to the design-builder consistently throughout the investigation.

The recently completed major modifications and additions to Reserve Mining Company's taconite concentrating process incorporate a totally new control system. Design of the new control scheme is centered on reliability, versatility, centralization, and optimization. The design objectives were achieved through a distributed control system based on a network of independent field located micro-processor based control systems connected to a central control room. Operation of each micro-processor can be interrogated and modified from the central control room by the operator or by either of two computer systems. The two computer systems handle logging, alarming, specialized sequenced controls, and complex process optimization routines.

Manganese alloys are important raw materials for steelmaking. However, selective mining of high-grade manganese ore resources has resulted in a scarcity of these high-grade Mn ores (Mn: >42; Mn/Fe: >5). The present research work is carried out to explore a new smelting reduction process to produce high-Mn/Fe syntheticMn ore from low-grade ferruginous manganese ores. Representative samples of low-grade ores (Mn: 25–30%; Mn/Fe: ~1) were collected and smelting reduction studies were carried out using variable smelting power (20–30 kWh), carbon rate (10–20% of ore) and slag basicity (0.1–0.3) to produce high-MnO slag and manganese pig iron. Studies have shown that different-grade high-MnO slags (MnO: 38.57–58.24%; Mn/Fe: >15) and manganese pigs (Mn: 5.16–24%) can be produced at optimum process conditions. The high-MnO slag can be used as synthetic ore for the ferroalloy production process. The developed process is capable to effectively segregate the iron and manganese in the metal and slag, respectively. The optimum Mn and Fe separation (>95%) was achieved by smelting of 10 kg Mn ore batch in a 50-kVA electric arc furnace using 30 kWh smelting power and 0.16 kg of coke. The slag basicity was maintained at 0.3 and the optimum slag SiO2 was ~30%. The studies indicated that the upgrading of low-grade ferruginous manganese ores is a promising solution for achieving high-Mn/Fe-ratio synthetic ores for ferroalloy production. It can help the manganese alloy industry to overcome challenges associated with the scarcity of high-Mn/Fe-ratio Mn ores and efficient utilization of low-grade resources.

The MTA in conjunction with LIRR, are in the process of expanding one of the largest commuter railroads in the country, with over 260,000 passengers a day. The LIRR, which provides 700 passenger trains every 24 hours, can?t continue on the present growth course as a joint tenant in Penn Station with Amtrak and NJT. For this reason, in conjunction with the fact that over 53% of LIRR?s current riders into Penn Station are ultimately bound for the East Side of Manhattan opening, have created the need for the expansion of the LIRR. The complete expansion will cost approximately 6.3 billion dollars and all of the contracts are to be completed by 2013.

They are gone now. Gone like that long ago generation that gave them birth. The Homestake Mine, nestled in the northern Black Hills, closed in 2001 after 125 years, the longest run of any major American gold mine. The Homestake Mining Co., which guided its destiny for those many years, is gone too. It merged with Barrick Gold. The Hearst family, which guided the early destiny of both, has long since gone beyond its mining heritage and into the national and even international spotlight. The mine and the company passed from the scene with as little fanfare as heralded their birth, amid the Black Hills gold rush of the 1870s. They both grew into American mining legends, as did the town they sired and nurtured, Lead. In a real sense, the mine and the company symbolized one of the last links to a vanished world and a mining era.

The recently completed Lower Northwest Interceptor Program (LNWI) in Sacramento, California comprises, ten pairs of micro tunnels totaling 4,369 m (14,417 ft),three horizontal directionally drilled bores totaling 956 m (3,154 ft), and two large diameter tunnels under the Sacramento River totaling 1,198 m (3,953 ft). This paper briefly summarizes surface and subsurface conditions, and planning and design considerations. It then goes on to describe problems encounterd with each trenchless crossing, as well as lessons learned with respect to shaft construction, ground control at shafts during tunnel break-in and break-out, frac-out and heave, settlement, obstructions, coordination with permitting agencies, and application of geotechnical baseline reports.

Traditional simulations of mineral processing circuits are solved by straightforward numerical techniques which require iteration to accommodate recirculating loads. Depending on the complexity of the simulated circuit, this solution technique can be inexact, computationally intensive, and potentially unstable. In this communication, an alternate calculation approach is presented, wherein an exact analytical solution is determined as a function of the individual units? separation probabilities. All the stream data, including recirculating loads, may be solved simultaneously, negating the need for iteration. Furthermore, with an analytical solution available, circuit analysis may then be utilized to diagnose the relative separation potential of the circuit. By integrating these tools, the authors have developed a software package for evaluating circuit configurations. This paper presents the theory, development, and limitations of the software?s methodology along with industrial examples which highlight the tool?s applicability to industrial circuits.

The new underground facilities for the LINAC Coherent Light Source project at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in Menlo Park, CA, are constructed in very weak sedimentary rock interspersed with uncemented zones. In addition to several 21-footwide (excavated) tunnels, the NATM excavations include a large, 49-foot wide (excavated) cavern, an unprecedented size in this geology. The critical design issues include characterization of the weak rock, some shallow rock cover areas, and very stringent criteria for final invert slab movements within the tunnel. The design also incorporated severe seismic criteria, since the site is in close proximity to the San Andreas Fault.

Steel fiber reinforced concrete segmental rings are the final tunnel lining for approximately 85% of the alignment for a 6.706-meter (22-foot) internal diameter tunnel being built as part of the East Side Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnel Project. This paper describes the approach adopted for the design of the steel fiber reinforced concrete segments, the development of the performance criteria for the segments, and the testing program used to confirm the performance of the materials and segments in the laboratory and in the field.

Excessive noise has long been a hazard in the coal-mining industry. Studies conducted during both the mid-1970s and the mid-1990s consistently show that hearing hearing loss within the mining industry persists, in spite of regulatory requirements and sampling technology advances. When MSHA’s new health standards to protect miners from hearing loss took effect in September 2000, the potential developed to re-evaluate sampling approaches with regard to noise-source hazards, such as task-based methods. This paper describes results from a Penn State research project currently being conducted at an underground coal mine. Each occupation was reviewed, and a list of tasks or processes performed by each was generated. Traditional personal noise dosimetry, static sound pressure levels, and equipment sound mappings have been performed. Job tasks indicating the greatest levels of daily noise exposure and contributions to noise dose have been identified and will be discussed.

Durban Harbour in South Africa is one of the continent’s busiest ports however the harbor entrance is currently too small for the new generation of container ships. There-fore it is to be deepened and widened by the National Ports Authority in the near future. An existing immersed tube tunnel carrying major sewer, water and other utilities under the harbor first needs to be removed and replaced by a deeper 4.4 m ID ser-vices tunnel. Construction of the deeper tunnel saw the first use of a slurry machine in South Africa and was required to negotiate grades up to 20%.
