Tunnel and shaft plugs have been designed to assist in construction of new and rehabilitation of existing tunnels and shafts. Tunnel plugs have been used to provide construction access for side by side tunnels, separation of raw and treated water, and to allow operation of one tunnel during construction of a nearby tunnel. Shaft plugs have been used to seal up surface openings to tunnels and to prevent seepage of water to the surface through adjacent tunnels or shafts. The design construction details of tunnel and shaft plugs are provided. Typical examples of tunnel and shaft plugs are provided.

Economic geologists faced with the task of evaluating phosphate rock deposits find it necessary to deal with a unique and a lengthy list of geologic, chemical, and economic factors before they can determine whether the deposit does, or does not, constitute "ore". The underlying fact is that phosphate rock concentrate sells at a price per ton that is among the lowest for all mineral commodities. A recent going price for a standard grade (i.e. 72% BPL) phosphate rock concentrate F.O.B. Tampa is $6.00 per long ton. This compares with sand and gravel's price of about $5.00 and $8.00, respectively, per ton. In the case of many, if not the great majority of mineral deposits, the evaluating geologist needs to concern himself principally with the fundamental and classic considerations of tonnage and grade. Barring some very unusual metallurgical problem any geologist that finds say 50 million tons of 1% copper rock, or substantial tonnages of 0.7% U308 sandstone, pretty well knows he has an ore body! Certainly the evaluation of phosphate rock starts with tonnage and grade. Any rock with less than about 10% P205 in the ground is generally ruled out as ore, on the basis of grade alone. Since nearly all phosphate rock operations must be of the large-tonnage, low-unit-value type, the tonnage of new reserves, to be considered as "ore", ought to be in the 100-million + class. INTRODUCTION Generations of tunneling engineers had to fight not only against bursting rock and squeezing ground but also against the destroying power of water. Intrusion of groundwater into the tunnel opening affects the stability of the tunnel support system, reduces the safety of the traffic inside the tunnel, induces corrosion of installed equipment, and provides for creeping currents at electric facilities. Aware of these problems, engineers of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and their consultants opened the way for a new approach in sealing a tunnel. It was made possible by accepting a new method of tunnel construction scarcely applied in the U.S. before. This new technique, the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), provided the basis for the successful installation of a PVC-membrane between two separated shells of tunnel lining, and the carefully directed drainage of groundwater. Beside of the economic benefits already attained by applying the NATM for tunnel construction, the Authority now saves millions of dollars otherwise necessary to maintain the tunnel during its lifetime (Garrett, 1986; Setzer, 1986). But there is a large number of leaking tunnels built according to conventional methods, some of them facing severe problems jeopardizing the safe utilization of these structures. Recently developed methods indicate that even those tunnels can be rehabilitated without extensive costs by draining and sealing them afterwards. A road tunnel in the Austrian Alps provides the scene for a major attempt to convert one of those leaking tunnels into a dry structure.

The Iron Hill (Powderhorn) carbonatite complex is a 31 km2 alkalic intrusion located about 35 km south-southwest of Gunnison, Colorado. The intrusion has been well studied and described because of its classic petrology and architecture of a carbonatite-alkalic complex. The complex is also noteworthy because it contains enrichments of titanium, rare earth elements, thorium, niobium (columbium), vanadium, and deposits of vermiculite and nepheline syenite. In particular, the complex is thought to host the largest titanium and niobium resources in the United States, although neither has been developed. It may be economic to extract multiple resources from this complex with a well coordinated mine and mill plan.

"Once every four years, the global mining industry gathers in Las Vegas, NV for MINExpo International. According to the show’s organizer, The National Mining Association (NMA), about 44,000 people attended the three-day show from Sept. 26-29. It was a show that featured the latest and greatest in equipment and technology. It also served as the backdrop for a snapshot of the state of the industry and while the picture of a global industry is never completely clear at any one time, one thing that is evident is technology has become a major force in the way mining is done.Had it not been for the awe-inspiring “iron” that was on the show floor in the form of haul trucks and shovels weighing hundreds of tons, one could be forgiven for thinking that they were at the Consumer Electronics Show. From training simulators designed to give a realistic experience of operating mining equipment to virtual reality technology that can take the user into the depths of an underground mine or the middle of a mapped ore deposit, an overriding theme of MINExpo 2016 was that the mining industry is connected like never before.In the north hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center was the GE Mining booth that was designed to showcase its efforts to help create a mine that will be connected from the front office to the face of the underground wall or bottom of the openpit. GE Mining called its booth a digital mine, and it included a suite of technologies that can improve performance, reliability, safety and operations. GE Mining said it views each mine as a mini-city, requiring power, water and transportation. Intelligent, real-time monitoring across the mine allows operators to make data-driven decisions that improve equipment reliability and optimize mine operations for substantial savings. And GE Mining was just one of many exhibitors showing off software that allows various types of equipment to communicate. Its booth sat in the shadow of the Komatsu booth with its new 360-t (400-st) 980E-4 haul truck that included GE’s 360-t (400-st) electric wheel motor. This is just one example of how technology is connecting machines, operations and people around the world and how mining is moving forward."

The mining industry in northern Ontario is known mostly for its huge nickel deposits. Inco’s and Falconbridge’s nickel mines in the Sudbury Basin are the best known. And with nickel prices being what they are, interest in the region continues. And how. Inco and Falconbridge want to merge. Teck Cominco wants Inco, but without Falconbridge. Xstrata made a hostile bid for Falconbridge, which Falconbridge rejected. And, in June, Phelps Dodge trumped them all when it made an approximately US$40-billion friendly offer for Inco and Falconbridge in a two-part deal.

The present research work deals with the effective utilization of hematite ore containing goethite, kaolinite and gibbsite losson- ignition (LOI) phases in pellet making without deteriorating product pellet properties by optimizing the induration cycle especially drying and preheating of pellets. Adequate drying and preheating of pellets before sintering is of prime importance to sustain the desired properties of pellets. Green pellets of + 8 to − 16 mm size were prepared in a laboratory disc pelletizer and indurated by varying drying and preheating temperatures in a laboratory Raising Hearth Furnace (RHF). Produced pellets were assessed for physical and metallurgical properties. Improvement in drying and preheating temperature simultaneously helped in mitigating fired pellets’ property deterioration. Drying at 300 °C and preheating at 750 °C helped in the maximum removal of matrix LOI from the pellets before firing and enabled the production of pellets of desired properties. Laboratory scale findings successfully implemented at existing 4.2 MTPA capacity pellet plant of JSW Steel Ltd. Vijayanagar and high LOI iron ores (IOs) utilised which resulted in reduction of average monthly pellet fines generation by ~2 wt. %.

A possible process for extracting tellurium and antimony from a residue generated in alkaline sulfide leaching of telluriumbearing alkaline skimming slag was proposed. The central composite design was employed to define the optimal leaching conditions for tellurium and antimony extractions from the residue sample. Using a 23 factorial matrix, the best performance for tellurium and antimony extractions (96.36% and 99.64%) were obtained at 175 g L−1 Na2S concentration for 80 °C during 60 min. The notable degree for influencing tellurium and antimony extractions was leaching temperature, Na2S concentration, and leaching time. The analysis of variance results indicated that the regression model was significant and suitable to be used for the optimization of independent variables within the range. The model was validated under optimal operating conditions based on the experimental design results. Antimony and tellurium in the leach liquor were separated and recovered by H2O2 oxidation followed by Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. 98.93% of antimony was precipitated selectively during H2O2 oxidation, while 95.06% of tellurium was precipitated during Na2S-Na2SO3 reduction. NaSb(OH)6 and elemental tellurium was obtained as the product.

American Indian lands contain a vast amount of renewable and non-renewable resources that have consequently been mined (Smith and Frehner). Therefore, it is understandable that tribes are concerned about environmental impacts from mining and their ability to minimize and mitigate these impacts. This has created a need to better understand mining and its environmental impacts. The University of Arizona Superfund Research Program Mining educational modules developed educational modules for tribal colleges focusing on environmental impacts of mining, remediation of mining wastes, and sociocultural impacts of mining. Educational modules are independently packaged units of study designed to enhance the learning process and can be modified and adapted to different learning scenarios and objectives. In addition to providing specialized knowledge, the modules feature hands-on activities, incorporation of technology, student involvement, discussion, and exchange of ideas. Modules will aim incorporate traditional ecological knowledge and approaches that promote effective science learning for native students. Modules are designed to augment existing associates of science programs (e.g. biology, chemistry) currently offered at tribal colleges and can be modified for use in K-12 education and for non-tribal audiences.

The extraction and processing of mineral resources may be accompanied by environmental impacts. In spite of technological advancements, the enormous increase in production volumes within the last decades has induced sizeable environmental impacts along the life-cycle of products. Beside environmental impacts, social issues associated with mining need to be considered to ensure the social acceptability of mining activities. The project EO-MINERS aims at deploying Earth Observation (EO) tools to inform best practices in mining and to thus assist the global mineral resources industries in their transition to sustainable development. In order to facilitate the handling of complex sets of information requirements from a wide variety of stakeholders, a set of indicators was developed that will inform the process of EO tool and services development. The project strives to enable stakeholders outside the industry to meaningfully participate in decision-finding processes on mining-related issues by developing and providing EO products and services that fit the information requirements. The project has identified a wide range of such information requirements by stakeholders that could be potentially provided by EO tools. The applicability of the EO tools on the local level is tested on three mining sites.

The Grand Isle Sulphur Mine is located in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately seven miles off the coast of Grand Isle, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The depth of water at this location is about 50 feet. The deposit is on acreage covered by oil, gas, and mineral leases which were originally issued in favor of Humble Oil & Refining Company by the State of Louisiana, and which were continued, maintained, and redesignated by the Department of the Interior of the United States, pursuant to Section 6(b) of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act. On September 19, 1956, Freeport Sulphur Company acquired from Humble Oil & Refining Company the sulphur rights underlying the tracts. This assignment was approved by the Secretary of the Interior on July 12, 1957. The Director, United States Geological Survey, approved Freeport Sulphur Company as Operator on July 31, 1957. Actual design began in September 1956; the first structural contract was let December 15, 1957, and offshore erection began in June 1958. The initial phase of construction will be completed and production started in early 1960. The estimated total cost of the project is $30,- 000,000, of which $8,000,000 is the extra cost for being in the Gulf of Mexico.

INTRODUCTION The entire scope of new facilities for Lake Mead Intake No. 3 includes a sub-merged intake structure, a deep tunnel beneath Lake Mead, a tunnel access shaft, Intake Pumping Station No. 3, and connections to an existing intake and water treat-ment facility, as shown in Figure 1. In March 2008 Vegas Tunnel Constructors (VTC), a joint venture of Impregilo SpA and SA Healy were awarded a $447m Design-Build contract by SNWA for a section of this work (Contract 070F 01 C1), including the 185 m deep tunnel access shaft, the 4.7 km long, 6.1 m diameter tunnel and the submerged intake. Arup, supported by Brierley Associates, is the Design Engineer for VTC. The scope of the work is shown in Figure 2. This paper will describe the design and construction on this contract, with a focus on the access shaft which is the most complete section of the work. The shaft is being sunk using drill-and-blast methods with the finallining placed as excavation proceeds. The shaft passes through a major fault zone, and extensive pre-excavation grouting for water control is required for much of the depth of the shaft.

The Owner Procurement Process or OPP is a proven, viable alternative contract delivery method that is potentially applicable to many tunnel projects. Using the OPP, the owner specifies and procures major tunnel construction items such as tunnel boring machines and tunnel linings and provides them to a tunnel excavation contractor in order to manage risk and accelerate project schedule. However, due to industry perceptions regarding potential owner risk, it is seldom considered or is rejected out of hand. In fact, past performance demonstrates that the process significantly minimizes owner, contractor and over-all project risk and mitigates the impact of any claims and differing site conditions. The paper outlines how the process should be structured to achieve schedule, cost, quality and risk management benefits. Potential and perceived disadvantages are discussed and how the process can be structured to mitigate or avoid them. The planned implementation of this process on the tunnels for the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in San Jose, California is discussed.

INTRODUCTION The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Spokane Mining Research Center, has been conducting and documenting rock mechanics research in the Coeur d’Alene mining district for the past ten years (1, 2, 3, 4, 14, 15). A current project combines the information gathered from rock mechanics instrumentation, geologic structure, and analytic techniques to improve shaft and support design for the deep mines of the district (3). This project required knowledge of the anticipated loads and the physical properties of the rock mass to provide accurate input data for computer design models. Several techniques have been utilized to determine the physical parameters including the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) solid inclusion probe, the CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) biaxial and triaxial strain cells, and the CSM (Colorado School of Mines) dilatometer. This paper describes the determination of the in situ modulus of deformation in three mines over a period of three years and the evaluation of these results as they applied to this project. The need for in-situ rock mass properties such as the modulus of deformation has stimulated research and development of a large number of instrumentation techniques. One area of continuing interest involves various methods of radial borehole dilation. This concept was pursued by Menard (9) with an apparatus known as the pressure meter, which is used frequently in soil mechanics. Other developments in rock mechanics include the CPC (cylindrical pressure cell) by Panek (11) and the dilatometer by Rocha et.al. (13) in Portugal. The CSM dilatometer, which also utilizes this technique, was chosen for this project because it required a small amount of background study, was inexpensive, and could easily be combined with other experiments being planned for the test locations. Although no previous field applications to hard rock (compressive strengths greater than 20,000 psi) has been documented, the instrument was selected since good results have been achieved in granite, oil shale, and several coal measure rocks (11, 12).

From 1993 through 1999 Cyprus Amax Minerals Company successfully completed eight major construction projects around the world. Six greenfield mines were brought into production, an ongoing operation was completely modernized, and an environmental issue was appropriately remediated. The projects stretched over three continents, from arctic Russia to the Atacama Desert, from 16,000feet to sea level, from city suburbs to remote wilderness, from a low of $130 million to over $1 billion. Open pit and underground; mill and leach; gold, copper, molybdenum, and coal were all encompassed. The breadth of diversity experience from these projects inspired Cyprus Amax to create a “best practices” project management protocol, to steer corporate expansion into the next millenium. This paper summarizes those best practices, while high-lighting project management pitfalls to avoid.

This paper presents the results of large-scale fire experiments on evaluating the performances of carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke sensors at low ventilation velocities. Experiments using three different combustibles — conveyor belt, coal and diesel fuel — were conducted in the experimental mine at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Bruceton Research Facility. A total of eight sensor stations were located downstream of the fire with each station containing sensors for CO, smoke, carbon dioxide (CO2 ), oxygen (O2 ), humidity, barometric pressure and temperature, as well as two airflow sensors. The airflow velocity ranged from 0.22 to 0.26 m/s (44 to 51 fpm) in the tests. The response times were recorded for the CO and smoke sensors at each sensor station when smoke and gaseous products of combustion from each burning combustible reached the station. The response times of the CO sensors were used to determine the appropriate sensor spacing in the belt entry with a low air velocity. The performance of the smoke sensor was found to be affected by the high humidity in the experiments. The results on proper selection of sensors and the determination of sensor spacing at a low ventilation velocity can be helpful for ensuring sufficient early fire warning for underground workers, thereby improving the health and safety of miners.

In addition to compliance with government emissions and reporting requirements, mining and mineral processing companies are increasing energy efficiency to reduce costs and become more competitive in the global marketplace. One of the major obstacles to identifying opportunities for increased energy efficiency is the lack of readily available data on energy use, and more importantly the energy use linked to production data, that identify energy reduction opportunities. As well as energy reduction, mining and mineral processing companies often struggle with the prediction of energy use, and are often penalized for under or over forecasting. Once again, it is the lack of timely information that makes this prediction difficult. This paper looks at expanding the use of a Manufacturing Execution Systems by integrating with Energy Solutions. This will provide automatic, timely information, at a granularity that makes it easier to identify energy reduction opportunities, reduce energy costs, and better predict energy use in a mining and mineral processing operation.

Interest in the western oil shales of the US began in about 1908, with the first retort in Colorado constructed in 1917. The most successful early developments were near Elko, NV, where the Catlin Shale Products Co. produced more than 1.9 dam3 (12 000 bbl) of shale oil during 1920-1924 and at Rulison, CO, where a US government operation produced about 570 in 3 (3 600 bbl) of shale oil during 1926-1929. Plentiful low-cost crude oil was developed about this time and shale oil was of little or no interest until after World War II. From 1944 to about 1972, several companies, and the US government, operated shale oil mines and recovery plants in Colorado. While technical successes were achieved and an estimated 40-56 clam' (250 000-350 000 bbl) of shale oil were produced, economics were not favorable and commercial production was not achieved. In recent years domestic production of crude oil supplies has not kept pace with US consumption. The growing shortfall has been met with imports. The cost of imported oil has continued to escalate and increased US dependence on petroleum imports are national concerns, because of the negative impact on US balance of payments and an increasing dependence on other nations for US energy needs. In 1978, petroleum imports equaled about 44% of demand, up from 23% in 1970, but down from 48% in 1977 because of availability of Alaskan North Slope crude oil. Reduced domestic consumption and other factors have reduced current imports to about 40-45% of de¬wand-but at ever increasing cost. The growing shortage of crude petroleum and its increasing cost have resulted in renewed worldwide interest in oil shales. In the past, the main obstacle to oil shale development (progress toward commercial production) has been economics-shale oil cost too much to develop and thus could not compete with conventional petroleum crudes. Even with today's inflated energy prices, some experts say the production of synthetic crude oil from oil shale is, at best, marginally economic. Measurements of the quantity of entrained air within processes have challenged instrumentation developers for years. This is particularly true in the unique and demanding operating environment and applications seen in minerals processing. In minerals processing applications, entrained air plays a role in errors seen within nuclear density gauge measurements and in pumping efficiency. It is also the major component of flotation processes. The measurement of the quantity of entrained air, known as the gas void fraction, can now be performed from the outside of a process pipe through CiDRA?s patented passive sonar array-based technology. Within column cells, the need for a robust, no maintenance, accurate means of measuring the entrained air, known as gas holdup, has resulted in a submersible version of this technology. CiDRA?s meter technology calculates the gas void fraction by first measuring the speed at which naturally occurring sound in the process slurry propagates past an axial array of sensors. These sensors are incorporated in a band that is wrapped around the outside of the pipe, resulting in no process downtimes for installation and unprecedented reliability. A known relationship between this speed of sound and the entrained air captured in the form of bubbles within the slurry is then applied in CiDRA?s meter to calculate the gas void fraction. This paper will present the measurement technology, its operation, its calibration and its application in a variety of gas void fraction and gas holdup measurement situations such as pumping efficiencies, hydrocyclone operation, external sparging, and column cells.
