Detailed monitoring of the response of the rock mass between rockbolt reinforcement units subjected to a simulated seismic source has been successfully conducted. This work has shown the increase in amplification of the Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) with distance from a rock bolt unit, and, a minimum PPV for rockburst damage for the given site characteristics. This understanding, at this site, will allow the design of a suitable rock bolt spacing to prevent unravelling of the rock mass between the rock bolt units for a given level of seismicity. Or, alternatively, an estimation of the requirement for a suitable fabric support system, for the anticipated level of seismicity, can be made.

Open fire in coal mines is one of the most serious threats to miners, as well as to the mine. Open fire can often be effectively dealt with by prompt local action, otherwise it very quickly becomes uncontrollable. In one incident, none of the available open fire control technologies, viz., water deluge and sprinkler systems, high-expansion foam, high-pressure high-stability nitrogen foam, water misting, and ventilation and pressure control techniques, were effective for saving the mine without sealing from surface, since the fuel-rich environment prohibited underground access due to the methane explosion hazard. The authors have developed a methodology for dealing with advancedstage open fires underground by the application of a modified ventilation control technique. It is based primarily on a better understanding of the behaviour of open fires, proper diagnosis of the problem, application of judicious ventilation control techniques, and selection of suitable fire indices for assessing the status of an open fire. This methodology was used to successfully control an open fire in Surakachhar 3 and 4 incline mine Surakachhar, central India. The fire area was sealed underground and production subsequently resumed in record time. The paper discusses the behaviour of open fires, particulars of the mine, diagnosis of the problem, experimentation methods, and the results obtained.

Whereas in the past, ladles were simply a means of transferring molten products from furnace tapholes to points of discharge be they casting pans or waste dumps, the ladle is now becoming a more integral and versatile piece of equipment in the pyrometallurgical plant. The drive behind this development is the need for continuous improvement in performance where better, faster and cheaper means remaining competitive in the global market. This paper will explore the technologies available for the rendering of a costly and otherwise cumbersome piece of pyrometallurgical equipment more efficient and versatile in adding value to the final product. Essentially it all revolves around heat and more importantly the loss of it when tapping. The common practice is to move the molten product to its point of discharge quickly with the minimum of interruption to prevent skulling and hence the cost associated with clearing it. The advances in Oxy-fuel burners, AC or DC ladle furnaces, converters, gas purging and high velocity, bath injection systems has increased the versatility of processes and enhanced the potential for adding value to intermediate products through down stream practices such as granulation and atomisation.

A brief summary of the propagation characteristics of rock provides the necessary understanding to design effective radar surveys. Measurements of the electrical properties of the major Bushveld platinum-bearing horizons and their host rocks show that radar is an excellent tool for both short -and longer-range mapping. Experimental work confirms the performance predictions. High frequency, 500 MHz ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a first-rate tool for mapping features in the hangingwall of the orebody, locally known as a ?reef?, for the purposes of determining hangingwall stability. The triplet chromitites above the UG2 have been clearly mapped, as has the Leader Seam above the UG2. Borehole radar at lower frequencies has been used over longer ranges to map reef elevation. Potholes in the UG2 are clearly distinguished in range and elevation to within metre accuracy. The nature of the slump in the various footwall horizons is also apparent. In future, as GPR is routinely applied, it is likely to become used for other purposes. Borehole radar is being developed to operate at higher frequencies, which will allow it to be deployed from boreholes that are within 5 m of the target horizon. The Tati Activox® Project (TA®P) is the first step towards the implementation of the Norilsk Nickel Activox® process. The ultrafine grinding (UFG) and autoclave pressure leach process conditions are the heart of the Activox® patent. Low grade base metal sulphide concentrates are leached in the process to recover the base metals and to produce LME grade nickel and copper cathodes and cobalt carbonates. The downstream processing of the metal-containing liquor produced by this process includes solvent extraction circuits to extract and concentrate metal-rich solutions, before the various final products are obtained. This paper gives an overview of many of the relevant design aspects taken into consideration in the design of the Tati Activox® solvent extraction circuits. It addresses key design elements related to leach process conditions such as scaling, materials selection for corrosive solutions, pH control, crud formation and treatment, multiple SX trains designed to prevent organic cross-contamination, and design aspects related to the mitigation of fire risks.

Recently, a new kind of filtration has emerged, namely nano-filtration (NF). It is a membrane-based process which exhibits totally unique separation characteristics for dissolved salts as well as for many non-charged species. By exploiting the particular separation characteristics of this new membrane type, many unique and novel separations have been made possible. The basis for separation by nanofiltration is the negative surface charge of the membrane. This results in rejection of multivalent anions, whilst associated cations are also rejected to maintain electro-neutrality. This peculiar property enables separation of dissolved ions such as sulphate and copper from acid, whilst the acid may be purified for reuse. This paper aims at providing an overview of the principles of nanofiltration, illustrated by particular examples.

The thermal properties of manganese raw materials such as ores, sinters, and briquettes, are among the many factors that determine the amount of energy needed for processing. Thermal expansion, thermal diffusivity, conductivity, and apparent specific heat capacity of solid samples and compacted powder samples of manganese ores were examined from room temperature to 1000 °C. The effect of porosity (of the materials used) on the thermal properties was also investigated. The laser flash method and a pushrod dilatometer were used.

This paper describes the research and development programme to develop a prototype underground auger mining system aimed at developing and demonstrating an underground auger mining system able to provide economic access to thinner (<1.8 m) coal reserves of South Africa. Data concerning the performance of modern coal augers under South African coal mining conditions were gained from a proven surface auger which operated across a range of coal types. These data were analysed and considered in conjunction with historical information regarding previous attempts at building underground augers dating back to the 1950s. Drawing on these data a prototype underground auger mining system, the BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger, was designed and manufactured by the BryDet Development Corporation in collaboration with Eskom and Cutting Edge Technology Pty Ltd with support from Anglo Coal and the Ingwe Coal Corporation Ltd. The prototype BryDet BUA 600 underground coal recovery auger commenced trials in March 2000 at the Matla Mine near Witbank in South Africa. The initial trials were undertaken in an open cut to facilitate the commissioning and training associated with a prototype mining machine. A total of 30 holes was augered in the box cut before the machine moved underground. The prototype BUA 600 first achieved the target penetration depth of 80 m in its third hole. The prototype BUA 600 is a new underground mining system which has passed early testing with ?flying colours? and could provide access to extensive underground coal reserves unmineable by conventional mining techniques both in South Africa and elsewhere around the world.

The smelter objective is to process wet concentrate to produce crushed, slow-cooled, sulphur-deficient nickel-copper matte rich in platinum group metals (PGMs), gold, and base metals for despatch to the Magnetic Concentration Plant at the Base Metals Refinery. Throughout its history, the smelter complex has been continuously upgraded in line with increasing production demand, changing feeds, environmental initiatives, and advances in available technology. The smelter receives filter cake and slurry from Anglo Platinum concentrators and joint ventures. Wet concentrate is fed through a flash drying process utilising coal-fired, fluidised bed hot-gas generators, to produce dry feed material for the electric furnaces and slag-cleaning furnace. For primary smelting, two electric furnaces are used, each with a rated capacity of 34MW. Furnace matte, containing the bulk of the base metal sulphides and PGMs, is tapped periodically into refractory-lined ladles and granulated using high-pressure water jets, then dried through electrically powered pneumo-driers to become the main feed to the Anglo platinum Converting Process (ACP). Slag is tapped semi-continuously, granulated, and treated through the slag mill. The ACP treats the combined matte output of Waterval, Polokwane, and Mortimer smelters. It is a top-blown furnace, with furnace matte, air, and oxygen being injected into the converter via a lance submerged in the slag. Converter matte is tapped and bottom cast into moulds, slow-cooled, crushed, and despatched to the refineries. Slag is granulated and dried for recycling to the slag-cleaning furnace. ACP slag is fed to the slag-cleaning furnace along with a reductant and a sulphur source. Slag-cleaning-furnace matte is granulated for processing by the ACP, while slag is granulated and processed in the slag mill. The slag mill and flotation circuit treats granulated slag from the electric furnaces and slag-cleaning furnace to recover entrained matte containing valuable PGMs and base metal sulphides.

"The consequences of ineffective mine closure in South Africa are evident from the number of abandoned mines and operations on extended care-and-maintenance, the on-selling of mines to less well-resourced companies to close, and increasing illegal mining activities. However, the data to substantiate these observations and provide insight into the underlying issues has not been available. Through the Promotion of Access to Information Act, a list of mine closure certificates applied for between 2011 and 2016 and a list of certificates granted over the same period for all nine regions of South Africa was obtained. From the analysis of this data, we show that the mine closure system as implemented in South Africa is largely ineffective. Although closure certificates are being granted, these are for prospecting sites and small-scale mines, which have a relatively small environmental impact. No large mines of any environmental significance were relinquished over the period under review, with very few applying for closure certificates. Furthermore, the issuing of closure certificates varies significantly between regional offices, with the success rate for applications being generally low and issuing of certificates taking an extended period. IntroductionThere are a number of concerns with the mine closure process as practiced in South Africa, and these have largely been laid at the door of government. Alberts et al. (2017) stress that the legislation generally conforms to international best practice. However, the system is ‘complex and unwieldy’, involving various pieces of legislation and different government departments with overlapping requirements and different interpretations of the law. A further area of concern is the capacity and competence of government to implement legislation. The ‘shortage of relevant mine closure skills and knowledge within the regulator’ was identified by van Druten and Bekker (2017) as a key contributor to unsuccessful closure. Lack of capacity and resources within the regulator has also been highlighted by Botham, Kelso, and Annegarn (2011) and Milaras, McKay, and Ahmed (2014). A recent study of the mineral application process by Corruption Watch (2017) indicates that positions in the regulator have been frozen for many years, leading to a shortage of staff, and that unqualified individuals have been appointed. There is also the perceived reluctance of government to grant closure in order to limit transfer of the liability to the state and delay the inevitable job losses."

The semi-solid metal casting process results in a unique solidification path. The microstructural features that were identified during the characterization of the as-cast microstructure, were used as evidence of the process history in order to determine the solidification path followed during the evolution of the microstructure. The morphology of the grains was characterized using SEM and the extent and distribution of the elemental segregation within the grain structure was analysed using EDS. The ?Kolwezi Zinc Plant?, in French ?Usines à Zinc de Kolwezi? (UZK), has produced about 910 000 dry metric tons of residues during the hydrometallurgical treatment of calcines from sulphide zinc concentrates. The zinc hydro plant residues contain on average 19.47% Zn, 2.7% Cu, 2.1% Pb, 26.6% Fe, 0.12% Cd, 0.39% As, 157ppm Ag, 447.8 ppm Ga, 475.4 ppm Ge, etc. This material was dumped in five ponds in the vicinity of the plant. The high Fe content in the ore concentrates induced important conversion of some of zinc and copper into ferrites during the roasting process. Those ferrites are very stable compounds, which are difficult to leach with dilute sulphuric acid solution. Therefore, they mainly report to the leaching residues. Hot leaching has been successfully applied to the treatment of zinc hydro plant residues. The method, however, presents the disadvantage of simultaneously dissolving iron(Fe). It is then necessary to remove an important iron quantity from solution prior to zinc and other metals recovery.

The construction of the Guaigui Multipurpose Project includes a 74 metre high concrete face rock fill dam, a 350 metre long diversion tunnel and a 350 metre long spillway tunnel. The topography in the project area is very steep, and the rock masses are characterized as soft rocks. The stability of the 80 to 100 metre high dam abutments and the excavation of the tunnels in soft rock conditions have caused various challenges and problems to be solved. Limited pre-investigations have called to a great extent for estimation of parameters for the stability calculations based on experience. The preliminary calculation of the stability of the planned rock slope above the spillway intake platform has been carried out by conventional partial factor methods and by use of a computed based Slide Program. The two methods of calculation give different results , and that rock support is necessary to obtain an acceptable factor of safety for a slope inclination of 52o. The input parameters for the rock mass characteristics need to be verified for the permanent calculations.

The Mine Health and Safety Act No. 29 of 1996, as amended, embeds an occupational health and safety management system that facilitates communication between representatives of the state, capital, and labour. In underground mines, two communication loops between these role players serve to separate the production chain of command from the political tripartite relations. Worker-elected health and safety representatives are involved in both communication loops, but are severely constrained in escalating their occupational health and safety concerns to the legalpolitical level. This has a direct bearing on the exercise of the Right to Refuse Dangerous Work (RRDW). As previously reported, health and safety representatives were found to primarily consult their production supervisors in preference to their trade-union representatives. This follow-up article presents production supervisor perspectives on the RRDW. The study demonstrates how, for mineworkers, the two distinct communication subsystems constrain, rather than facilitate, implementation of the RRDW.

We report on further progress in improving seismic locations by using the so-called double-difference method (Spottiswoode and Milev, 1998 and Waldhauser et al., 1999). Double-differences are obtained either using picked arrival times or various measures of time differences obtained from waveform pairs. The double-difference method provides for much improved relative locations by reducing the effect of the errors in the wave velocity of ray paths between each event and each geophone. Further improvements are obtained by using known locations, such as blasts. One of the difficult problems that we have overcome is that of finding the best “weights” for the time corrections. Experience obtained in relative moment tensor inversions by Andersen (2001) suggests that use of median corrections is both more stable and more accurate, even while the locations of the individual events is based on weighted least-squares minimization. A hybrid location program with known reference events has been developed. Tests on a synthetic data set gave relative locations that were much less widely spread than the absolute locations. The use of known event coordinates (blasts) moved the relative locations back towards the real locations. These results are confirmed in preliminary analysis of data from a mine. The absolute locations are adjusted using blast events restricted to the line of tunnel development. Inter-event distances are distributed in a power-law fashion that suggests that the relative location accuracies are improved by a factor of three or more. Nous rendons compte des progrès faits dans l’amélioration des locations de séismes en utilisant la méthode appelée de double- différence (Spottiswoode and Milev, 1998 et Waldhauser et al., 1999). On obtient les double-différences soit en utilisant des temps d’arrivée choisis soit des mesures variées de différences de temps obtenues de doublets de forme d’onde. La méthode de double-différence fournit des locations relatives très améliorées en réduisant l’effet des erreurs dans la vitesse d’onde des trajectoires de rayon entre chaque évènement et chaque géophone. D’autres améliorations sont obtenues en utilisant des locations connues, telles que les coups de mine. Un des problèmes difficiles que nous avons surmontés est celui de trouver les meilleurs coefficients de pondération pour les corrections de temps. L’expérience obtenue dans des inversions de phases tensorielles relatives par Andersen (2001) suggère que l’utilisation de corrections médianes est à la fois plus stable et plus exacte, même lorsque la location des évènements individuels est basée sur minimisation pondérée de moindres carrés. Nous avons développé un programme hybride de location avec des évènements connus pour référence. Des tests sur des données artificielles ont donné des locations relatives qui étaient beaucoup moins étendues que les locations absolues. L’utilisation de coordonnées d’évènements connus (coups de mine) a ramené les locations relatives vers les locations réelles. L’analyse préliminaire des données d’une mine a confirmé ces résultats. Les locations absolues sont ajustées en utilisant des évènements de coup de mine restreints à la ligne du développement du tunnel. Les distances entre chaque évènement sont distribuées comme par loi exponentielle ce qui suggère que les degrés d’exactitude des locations relatives sont améliorés par un facteur de trois ou plus. Wir berichten über einen weiteren Fortschritt, die seismische Positionen unter Verwendung der zu sogenannten Doppel-Unterschied-Methode (Spottiswoode und Milev, 1998 und Waldhauser et al.,1999) zu verbessern. Doppel-Unterschiede werden entweder mit ausgewählten Ankunftszeiten oder verschiedenen Messungen von Zeitunterschieden erreicht, die von den Wellenformpaaren erhalten werden. Die Doppel-Unterschied-Methode liefert viel verbesserte relative Positionen unter Verringerung der Auswirkung von Fehlern in der Wellengeschwindigkeit von Strahlengängen zwischen jedem Fall und jedem Geophon. Weitere Verbesserungen werden erreicht, indem man bekannte Positionen, wie Sprengungen verwendet. Eines der schwierigen Probleme, die wir überwunden haben, ist jenes des Findens der besten "Gewichte" für die Zeitkorrekturen. Die Erfahrung, die in den relativen Momentspannerumkehrungen von Andersen (2001) gewonnen werden bietet den Schluß an, daß der Gebrauch von mittleren Korrekturen beständiger und genauer ist, sogar wenn die Positionen der einzelnen Fälle auf der bewerteten Reduzierung der Methode der kleinsten Quadrate basiert. The Rhodax inertial cone grinder, designed by France?s FCB Group Fives, is the result of three years, theoretical and mechanical research in the field of compression grinding by the research staff of FCB?s CRM minerals research centre. A number of potential uses have been assessed and will be discussed in the paper. The crusher is an inertial grinder that works on the pressurized bed fragmentation principle. The fragmentation force is caused by the rotation of unbalanced masses rather than by an eccentric mass, as is the case in a conventional crusher. This makes it possible to achieve very high reduction ratios. By controlling the speed of rotation of the unbalanced masses, the grinding force can be modified, thus changing the product size distribution. The paper describes the machine layout, operating principles, control parameters and will briefly describe the results obtained on reef, waste and ROM reject pebbles. Some comparisons are made with conventional crushing.

Unplanned dilution and ore loss directly influence not only the productivity of underground stopes, but also the profitability of the entire mining process. Stope dilution is a result of complex interactions between a number of factors, and cannot be predicted prior to mining. In this study, unplanned dilution and ore loss prediction models were established using multiple linear and nonlinear regression analysis (MLRA and MNRA), as well as an artificial neural network (ANN) method based on 1067 datasets with ten causative factors from three underground longhole stoping mines in Western Australia. Models were established for individual mines, as well as a general model that includes all of the mine data-sets. The correlation coefficient (R) was used to evaluate the methods, and the values for MLRA, MNRA, and ANN compared with the general model were 0.419, 0.438, and 0.719, respectively. Considering that the current unplanned dilution and ore loss prediction for the mines investigated yielded an R of 0.088, the ANN model results are noteworthy. The proposed ANN model can be used directly as a practical tool to predict unplanned dilution and ore loss in mines, which will not only enhance productivity, but will also be beneficial for stope planning and design.

KCM made a major modification to the Nchanga Tailings Leach Plant (TLP) changing the circuit from feeding post leach thickeners in parallel with leach discharge for solid ?liquid separation to a Counter Current Decantation (CCD) configuration utilising most of the existing equipment. The new circuit is aimed at improving copper recovery from approximately 70% to 79% through enhanced wash efficiency. The re-introduction of CCD circuit at elevated throughput of 46 000-tpd design was made possible due to the EIMCO E-Duc technology design which is an auto-dilution system that enhances solids settling rate. Commissioning (manual operation) which accommodated on-going operational requirements was phased and completed in January 2004. The circuit stabilised in subsequent months and in March alone an all time record copper recovery of 81.8% was achieved which contributed an extra 779 tonnes copper above the plant?s projected production plans. 100% of the project cost was paid back by end of April 2004 This paper discusses the work involved and the challenges faced during the re-commission

A low noise blast hole drilling system was developed to limit the risk of noise induced hearing impairment in mining operations. Noise induced hearing loss has been identified as a major occupational health risk in SA mines. The noise generated by pneumatic percussion drills is a major contributor to such noise induced hearing. This motivated the South African Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee (SIMRAC) to commission the development of a low noise rock drill system. The system had to be designed, manufactured, tested and demonstrated in a simulated underground mining environment. The specification required noise levels below 90 dBA. Other important design considerations were ease of manual transport, setting up and operation. The primary design concept was to encapsulate a standard Seco S215 pneumatic rock drill in a composite material tube. The tube is pushed onto the rock face by a pneumatic cylinder and is sealed at the rock face by an elastic seal. The drill is pulled towards the rock face by a rope and pulley mechanism fitted inside the tube. This mechanism is powered by a second pneumatic cylinder. The actions of moving and setting the drill require two persons. However, the team can carry out the drilling function itself on several drills simultaneously because of the self-thrusting design. The drill is supported by two camlocks. The exhaust (air containing dust, water, rock shavings, oil and grease) is removed from the encapsulating tubes via exhaust tube to the end of the stope. In this way exhaust noise and air pollutants are disposed of away from personnel. Tests were conducted in a test stope. Noise levels of under 90 dBA were achieved, thereby attaining the primary design specification. This was achieved without materially compromising ease of handling. Penetration rate was somewhat improved compared to that of the standard drill, so that productivity could be maintained. Keywords: Drill, rock drill, quiet, noise, mine, underground.
