The purpose of this program is to extend electromagnetic (EM) techniques for use in locating miners trapped in mines as deep as 1000 m. A previously developed EM system is considered adequate for use at mines less than 300 m deep where it has a probability of detection of 54%. A system for deep mines must keep underground equipment simple, and use extremely low frequencies (ELF), sensitive receivers, and noise cancellation. The proposed location method, developed by Develco for other applications, is based on vector field measurements from two or more static sensors and computation of source location by iterative techniques. During Phase II, very sensitive search coil sensors were built and used in a separate test to verify the feasibility of atmospheric noise cancellation. A "Breadboard" location system version without cancellation, which is a fieldable test bed to evaluate receiving and location functions, was tested and supplied. Very good results were achieved from the first in-mine test with the transmitter at a depth of 380 m. It is expected the results of this work, and additional evaluation tests in the future, will be used to define the requirements for a prototype operational system.

The procedure suggested in this report is intended for the use of engineers, esters, accountants, etc., in estimating the cost of chemical-type operations. It is intended to over operating costs, not investment costs, as the latter have been covered numerous other publications. However, as capital investment costs are reflected to a high degree in operating costs, it is important to point out that accuracy of investment costs is highly essential. Therefore, all factors that might be included under plant -capital costs should be considered, such as requirements of shops, employees' housing, etc. The procedure is designed primarily for use in types of chemical oper¬ations, such as the production of synthetic liquid fuels, anhydrous ammonia, and others of like or similar nature. Yet, no attempt has been made to cover the entire chemical industry.

This Bureau of Mines publication describes and evaluates a Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) based end-use data system for minerals that is designed to link the demand for minerals to economic activity in commercial uses. The new data system is two-dimensional. The first dimension of technical product classes (TPC's) measures the consumption of minerals in major primary intermediate products. The second dimension measures the consumption of these TPC's in SIC end-use sectors in sufficient detail to identify the major determinants of demand for each TPC. Intercomodity comparisons are achieved at the level of SIC two-digit major groups. The methodology was developed so that all available sources of information from Government and industry can be utilized at minimum cost. This information will be supplemented with additional data to be obtained by modifying existing Bureau of Mines canvasses so as to elicit additional quantitative responses from mineral producers. The new data system is expected to improve significantly the ability to forecast demand for minerals, and provide an information base that would, for the first time ever, permit resolution of such questions as trends in substitution among materials and the intensity-of-use of materials in end-use sectors. For the 42 TPC?s identified in the report, data are available for the new system from current sources or, except for three TPC?s that require new canvasses, can be obtained by modification of existing Bureau canvasses.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory conducted a full-scale test of a composite polyurethane-aggregate seal in a hydrostatic chamber at the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine. This composite seal consisted of a polyurethane and limestone aggregate core that was formed between two concrete block walls. In the hydro-static chamber test, water is used to pressurize the seal. During the test, the maximum average water pressure the seal was able to withstand was 18.9 psi. Further, the seal began to yield at an average water pressure of only 17 psi. At the time of the test, the minimum seal design requirement was 20 psi under 30 CFR4 75.335 (2005). Therefore, based on this test, the seal did not meet the regulatory minimum design requirement. Uniaxial compressive tests conducted on samples from the polyurethane-aggregate core revealed that both the compressive strength and the elastic modulus of the material were much less than that for polyurethane only with a density of 10.0?12.0 lb/ft3. The significant reduction in the strength and stiffness of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture results from the formation of a soft polyurethane foam around each piece of aggregate. The formation of the soft foam seems to be caused by residual moisture from the aggregate. The moisture also caused the density of the polyurethane in the polyurethane-aggregate mixture to be less than the design requirements. The lower density of the polyurethane in the mixture, along with the formation of zones of pure polyurethane only, resulted in the overall seal density being less than the design requirements. During seal construction, steps were taken to control the moisture, but were not successful. An analysis of the seal failure showed that the calculated shear stresses at failure and the estimated shear strength of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture are fairly close. This suggests that the strength properties of the polyurethane-aggregate mixture along with a weak zone of poorly bonded aggregate controlled the maximum pressure the seal could withstand. At the time of the seal testing, the minimum design requirement was 20 psi, as specified at 30 CFR 75.335 (2005). New emergency temporary standards for seal designs were promulgated on May 22, 2007, with a minimum requirement of 50 psi under specified conditions. However, it will be shown that the evaluation of the polyurethane seal performance as designed to meet the older 20-psi criterion can be relevant to the design requirements under the new standards.

The Bureau of Mines estimated the cost for ,3 uranium ion-exchange recovery system using five grades of 17.0, leach solution producing 815,570 pounds of U 0? per year from an ammonium bicarbonate in situ leach solution. The system flowsheet consisted of four unit operations: (1) Multiple-compartment ion-exchange (MCIX) absorption; (2) MCIX elution; (3) precipitation of the uranium as yellow cake, filtering, calcining, and packaging; and (4) waste disposal. The total fixed capital cost of a system treating 2,000 gallons per minute of 0.1-gram-per-liter-U308 leach solution was estimated as $6,888,000. For n basic case of an MCIX system depreciating in 9 years, unit production cost of U308 was $3.51 per pound. A decrease in feed solution grade from 0.[4] to 0.03 gram per liter increased the production cost exponentially. Shorter depreciating periods significantly increased the production cost particularly for the lower grade feed solutions.

One by one new metals come to share the burden of modern industry. Long before the Christian era potters and glass workers employed fine and costly blue pigments that contained cobalt. Cobalt blue class has been found in the tombs of the Egyptians and in the ruins of Troy, and many of the colors used by the ancient Greeks and Romans contained cobalt. The ancients, however, were apparently unaware that the colors they used were caused by cobalt, and it was not until late in the 17th century that the existence of the element was recognized, Writers in the Middle Ages referred to "cobalos" as an evil spirit that haunted mines and caused trouble to the miners. Subsequently the German worms "Kobold," meaning goblin, came to be applied to any baffling mineral and particularly to minerals that resembled ores but failed to yield metal when smelted. Even to-day there is something of an air of mystery about cobalt, and a medieval cloak of secrecy still surrounds many of the metallurgical processes employed in its production. "Zaffre" was mentioned about the middle of the sixteenth century by Biringuccio, and in 1735 the metal war, first prepared by G. Brandt. To preparation of cobalt compounds, however, must have been carried on in at least a small way ever since the opening of the silver-cobalt deposits of Schneeberg in 1470. By 1790 there were 25 works engaged in the industry, rust of them located in Saxony, but the total output of these works probably did not exceed 300 tone of cobalt annually, mostly in the fore of smalt. The smalt which contained approximately 6 per cent cobalt was sold in Venice in 1520 at about 16 cents a pound. A few refineries in Holland supplied the Irish linen trade, contributed a farce amount to the Dutch linen industries, and alto provided smaller quantities for the manufactuer of litmus in Holland. Papers presented at a U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) technology transfer seminar describe the causes of violent material failure in U.S. mines, measurement techniques for monitoring events that result in violent failure, and mitigation techniques for controlling failure. Specific factors contributing to violent failure are identified on the basis of geotechnical monitoring in 16 U.S. hard-rock and coal mines and on statistical analyses of 172 coal bump events. New monitoring and analysis techniques developed as tools for assessing violent failure; geotomographic methods that provide new capabilities for the study of material failure and stress changes over large areas; and seismic methods for determining source locations, calculating energy release, and determining source mechanisms are described. Fair correlations have been established among seismic parameters, elastic stresses, face support load, and violent events. USBM studies have identified the advantages using both yielding and stable pillars for coal bump control. A computer program has been developed as an aid for selecting room-and-pillar layouts. The practical aspects of implementing a destressing program is outlined for coal mines, while the importance of mine orientation and timely support installation in controlling buckling-type failure is identified for hard-rock mines.

Greensand, which is widely distributed in the Eastern United States, was produced in 1975 only by Inversand Co., a subsidiary of Hungerford & Terry, Inc., near Clayton, N.J. Production and sales information are not available for publication. Raw greensand produced by the company was sold for agricultural use as a soil conditioner. Processed greensand was used by manufacturers as filter media in equipment for the removal of manganese, iron and other elements from water. The University of Delaware received a grant of $17,051 from the Bureau of Mines early in 1976 to continue its studies of the effectiveness of greensand in removing metallic contaminants from waste waters.

Previous work.-The general plan of work outlined for the Government fuel-testing plant erected at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, at St. Louis, Mo., in 1904, included investigations relative to the briquetting of coals found in the United States. These investigations embraced the possibility of making satisfactory commercial fuels from lignite or low-grade coals which do not stand shipment well; of benefiting culm or slack coals that are wasted or sold at unremunerative prices; and of improving the furnace efficiency or ability to withstand transportation of good coals. This work was begun in 1904 and was continued in 1905, 1906, and 1907 as an essential part of investigations looking to the determination of methods for reducing waste and increasing efficiency in the utilization of the fuel resources in the United States. The initial briquetting tests at St. Louis, which included examination into the behavior of different coals or mixtures of coals in the briquetting press, experimental study of the merits of various substances used as binders, and consideration of the physical properties and resistance to weather and abrasion of the briquets, have been described.a They demonstrated that satisfactory briquets could be made from most coals, and that by briquetting the commercial value of many low-grade coals and lignites could be raised enough to more than cover the cost of manufacture. Norfolk plant.-The briquetting plant of the Geological Survey was moved from St. Louis, Mo., to Norfolk, Va., in 1907, along with the steam boiler and producer-gas equipment of the fuel-testing plant, as the closing out of the affairs of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the consequent removal of the buildings from Forest Park made a change of location necessary. Norfolk was selected largely with a view to the testing of coals for naval purposes, and because of facilities in the way of buildings and materials offered by the Jamestown Exposition Company. The work at Norfolk was chiefly devoted to making steaming and briquet tests of coals which reach the Atlantic seaboard at Norfolk and Newport News and are used by the navy and merchant marine. Two briquet machines were installed at the Norfolk plant, one being the English machine used in briquetting tests by the Geological Survey at St. Louis in 1905 and 1906, and the other an American machine. The briquets made at this plant were tested on locomotives of several railroads entering Norfolk and on the United States torpedo boat Buldle in comparison with the run-of-mine coal used in making them. Some of the tests were conducted by the railroads on their own locomotives, but those on the Biddle and on the locomotive of the Seaboard Air Line Railway were carried on by W. T. Ray and Henry Kreisinger, of the United States Geological Survey. Personnel.-Charles T. Malcolmson continued in general charge of the briquetting section after the removal to Norfolk until January 1, 1908. Walter J. Chapman continued in charge of operation of the briquet machines and of the observations reported under the heading "Details of manufacture." Charles L. Wright supervised the installation of the English briquet machine and later in the year continued the physical tests of briquets and the analyses in the chemical laboratory of the section until January 1, 1908, on which date he was placed in general charge of the work of the section. G. E. Ryder and Ralph Galt also continued with the staff, but the former was obliged to resign soon after the plant was in operation on account of ill health; the latter continued with the section as computer until the close of work on December 1, 1908.

In recent years the interest in rare-earth compounds as refractory materials has exceeded the available literature on the subject. While some basic properties, such as density and melting point, of the more readily available rare-earth compounds have been reported in the literature, relatively few papers can be found that deal comprehensively and primarily with high-temperature refractory properties and applications of rare-earth oxides, carbides, sulfides, and nitrides. Therefore, this bibliography has been pre-pared for the use of the ceramic industry as a guide for locating and utilizing the scattered and frequently fragmentary information available. The term "rare earths", as applied in the literature search for this bibliography, is understood to include the following elements: cerium, dysprosium, erbium, europium, gadolinium, holmium, lanthanum, lutetium, neodymium, praseodymium, samarium, terbium, thorium, thulium, uranium, and ytterbium. (On the periodic chart, these elements appear as numbers 57 through 60, 62 through 71, 90, and 92.) It is emphasized that many of the abstracts included are from papers in which the rare-earth compound or compounds are treated along with several other ceramic materials, are mentioned only secondarily, with primary interest placed on a more commonly used refractory material, or are used as part of a mixture of materials formed experimentally and reported on in the paper. As the better known rare-earth materials, such as the oxides of uranium, thorium, and cerium, appear more frequently in the literature, they also appear more frequently in this collection. Articles abstracted include only information on the basic properties that are of interest to the refractories investigator. References to crystal lattices and related topics are generally excluded from this publication. The temperature 1,500° C. has been set arbitrarily as the lower limit for reported data on thermal properties. However, because of the scarcity of information, some reports are included in which data are limited to those obtained at lower temperatures. Many of the articles abstracted include lists of references that will be of additional assistance in pursuing specific lines of investigation.

The objective of the research performed A for the Bureau of Mines on this contract was to develop a portable instrument for the detection of carbon monoxide (CO) in a mine environment. The desired characteristics were sensitivity and specificity for CO with a stable calibration. The sensor of the instrument was to be of metal oxide composition, requiring low power for compatibility with the types of batteries presently used in personal equipment in mines. The solid state design was also desired for ruggedness and small size. A key design feature of the instrument was to be provided by adherence to the intrinsic safety design requirements for electrical equipments operated in potentially exposive mine atmosphere. The Research Triangle Institute has prior experience in developing a solid state oxygen sensor using a thin film of zinc-oxide (Ref. 1) and experience in fabricating thin film devices. Solid state sensors utilized by other workers (Refs. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) have included metal and semiconductor films and crystals of materials like carbon and aluminum oxide for the measurement of water vapor in the air and have relied upon measuring resistance and capacitance changes in the sensor in response to adsorbed vapors or gases. Since the effect of carbon monoxide in changing the resistance of various materials such as molybdenum, platinum, and zinc oxide had been reported (Refs. 7, 8, 9, 10), the requirements appeared to be realisable, although it was recognized even at the inception of the work that specificity to carbon monoxide might require the incorporation of more than one sensor.

This paper describing the mining practices at Mine No. 1, Menominee Range, Mich., is one of a. series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining practices, methods, and costs in the various mining districts of the United States. It is felt that the publication of this information will be of interest and value to the mining industry at large and especially to operators whose mining conditions are similar to those described. "The mode of ore occurrence and the methods and costs of mining at one of the zinc-lead mines in the Tri-State zinc and lead district, Oklahoma, are presented in this paper for the information of mine operators in other districts.No. 2 mine property was acquired by lease in 1918 after some 30 holes had been drilled and a shaft had been sunk to the 305-foot level by the first lessees. After acquisition of the lease, the present operating company drilled a rich ore body on the 260-foot level and in 1920 started sinking two shafts. Production was begun late in 1921, and the mine has been operated more or less continuously to the present time.The mill has a capacity of 400 tons in 10 hours, the usual length of the mill shift in the district.The geology of Mine No. 2 is very similar to that of Mine No. 13 except that the Cherokee shale is thicker, ranging from 80 to 160 feet, and all the formations are correspondingly deeper, the Short Creek oolite horizon here being at a depth of about 300 feet. The oolite has not been found on this property, but the lime comes in at about the level at which the oolite should appear.The ore deposits of Mine No. 2 occur in the brecciated and bowlder ground above the Short Creek oolite. The main or 260-foot level is about 40 feet above the oolite horizon, and the lower or 300-foot level is immediately above it.The ore deposition is controlled by a zone of shearing and fracturing, and the mineable areas are divided into two distinct runs which have a northwest trend with a lean or practically barren area dividing them. This characteristic has controlled the mining to a large extent, for it enables the mine superintendent to locate the large pillars in lean ore and leave only small pillars in the richer ore. Figure 1 shows the outlines of the ore body and the pillars.The ore on the main level occurs disseminated throughout the jasperoid breccia as patches or lenses in the jasperoid, or cementing massive bowlders of jasperoid breccia and chert. The ore of the lower level is more of the bowlder type than that on the main level and occurs chiefly cementing the bowlders but also with some disseminated ore in the jasperoid breccia.The gangue minerals are jasperoid breccia, chert, and dolomite. Calcite is found in minor quantities. Sphalerite is the principal ore mineral; galena is found only in minor quantities around the edges of the ore body. When galena is encountered in this ore body, the limit of the ore can be expected.The exploration and estimation of ore reserves at Mine No. 2 are similar in many respects to the methods used at Mine No. 1.4After the mine was opened up and the general character of the ore deposit had been determined, drilling operations were concentrated along the trend of the shear zone. Later drilling has proved what appears to be a parallel shear zone or an offset of the zone now being mined."

"INTRODUCTION Approximately 1,250,000 tons of 2-1/2-inch and 1-1/2-inch slack, representing over half of the output from 40 to 50 mines, is produced in the Denver region each year. Part of this slack is made by crushing lump, and some of it is rescreened to make pea and modified pea sizes measuring 1-1/2 inches by 2-1/2 inches and 3/4-inch by 1-1/2 inches, round-hole. Modified pea is popular as domestic stoker fuel. Approximately 900,000 tons of slack 0 by 2-1/2 inches, 0 by 1-1/ 2 inches, and 0 by 3/4-inch in size are consumed by industrial plants, the principal consumers being a large power plant and the beet-sugar industry. The power plant uses annually 250,000 to 275,000 tons of pulverized fuel and can pulverize slack of any size, while the sugar factories consume about the same quantity of coal in stokers. The sugar factories store about 110,000 tons of 2-1/2-inch slack under water from January to October, and burn the remainder of their consumption directly during the campaign season from October to December. For this purpose, sugar-factory power plants can use any size of slack, which is recrushed to pass a 3/4- or 1/2-inch screen before burning on chain-grate stokers. About one-third of the 2-1/ 2- inch slack produced in the field is used in smaller industrial plants that employ stokers.Certain factors affect the utilization of 2-1/2-inch slack in the Denver region. The increasing production of hydroelectric power has reduced the consumption of coal at power plants slightly. If more hydropower is generated, the trend of consumption of slack might be downward, unless industrial activity offsets this greater output. Rapid increase in number of domestic stokers during recent years has necessitated preparation of greater quantities of stoker coal, with the result that more lump is crushed, and preparation facilities are changed. At present about 19 percent of the coal produced is crushed to meet the constant demand for industrial fuel as well as the increasing but variable demand for the small domestic stoker sizes. The quantity crushed has increased 12 percent during the last 6 years. These factors are shifting constantly. The trend toward the use of clean and smaller sizes for domestic stokers gives a slack having a larger proportion of fines. In future, even greater quantities of small stoker coal probably will be prepared, and the resulting greater quantities of small slack will have to be used for industrial purposes."

This report on the mining and milling of tungsten ores is the second part of a general study of the domestic tungsten industry. The first part, comprising general information on tungsten, has been printed as Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6821. The purpose of these papers is to increase efficiency in the mining, preparation, and utilization of the tungsten resources of the United States. The tungsten industry forms so small a part of the vast mining and metallurgical operations of the illation that private metallurgists have not had enough inducement to give special attention to the recovery of tungsten minerals from the ores, and many of the small companies are financially unable to undertake research work. A study of the milling of tungsten ores reveals that further improvement is possible, especially in the treatment of slimes. Recent experimental work by the Bureau shows that the flotation process is applicable to certain tungsten ores. The future of the tungsten industry it the United States depends to a great extent on utilization of the low-grade deposits of the contact-metamorphic type.

Bituminous coals having maximum fluidity values in the 40- to 25,400-dial-divisions-per-minute (ddpm) range were carbonized in a continuous, entrained-bed reactor. Carbonization was conducted in an 8-inch diameter, vertical reactor at temperatures from 955° to 1,345° F and at air-to-coal ratios ranging from 4.63 to 16.12 scf/lb of moisture-and ash-free coal charged. Carbonization rates from about 118 to 360 lb/hr, as-carbonized basis, were examined. It was demonstrated that carbonization temperature and air-to-coal ratio must exceed minimum values for continuous operation. Within the operating conditions discussed, highly fluid bituminous coal was carbonized to produce tar and nonagglomerated char. The yield of tar ranged from 21.3 to 38.9 gallons per ton and the char yield ranged from 1,109 to 1,563 pounds per ton, all units expressed on a moisture-and ash-free basis. It was demonstrated that the maximum fluidity and the average size of the coal along with the air-to-coal ratio and the carbonization temperature act together to influence the carbonization product yields and certain properties of the products. Prediction equations were developed from the data for product yields and selected properties of the char, tar, and gas.

A U.S. Bureau of Mines interactive FORTRAN computer program can screen explosion-proof enclosures intended for underground service. The program incorporates important information and criteria to assist enclosure manufacturers and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) personnel by providing a first-order approximation of rectangular explosion-proof enclosure characteristics prior to actual certification testing. The program uses information and data that can be retrieved automatically during program execution. The program also performs the calculations for a series solution algorithm and various equations to evaluate the enclosure for both a static internal pressure and an internal explosion. The program writes the intermediate and final calculations and information concerning the status of the screening process to a summary file on a floppy disk. One data base contains MSHA certification requirements given in the Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR 18). A second data base contains material properties of acceptable construction materials and weld joint efficiencies. A series algorithm determines bolt and cover stresses for a simply supported rectangular cover with arbitrary bolt locations. Limit and yield line analysis is used to calculate the strength of body panels.

Electrical power generation was studied in a laboratory-scale, open-cycle vortex MHD generator, which offers several advantages over straight-channel generators that require separate combustors. Compactness, lower capital cost, and high-energy release are obtained by combining the combustor and generator into one unit in the vortex generator. In addition, the vortex generator uses a simple solenoid rather than the more complex and expensive saddle magnet required for straight channel generators. Although the vortex generator must utilize combustion gases with a low Hall coefficient in order to be efficient in direct comparison to the linear generator, the primary motivation for this experimental device in terms of ultimate objective was to investigate the vortex generator with applications to direct coal firing and with combustion taking place in specially designed expansion nozzles. The vortex device offers one decided advantage over the linear device in this regard because slag deposits do not degrade or short-circuit the coaxial electrodes as is the case for a linear machine. The experimental vortex generator consists of a modified cyclone burner 7 ½ in ID by 21 in long, with the inner wall used as one electrode together with a coaxial center electrode. Power was obtained by impressing an axial field of 3,000 G from an air core solenoid magnet. Tests were conducted by seeding natural gas seeded with potassium acetate and burning with preheated oxygen-enriched air. Power generation was lower than calculated because theoretical plasma velocities were not achieved.

The electrochemical reduction of AlC13 was investigated as a process for the production of aluminum. An externally heated, single-compartment cell with a rammed refractory lining was used with molten KCl-NaCl-AlC13 electrolyte. Aluminum was deposited qt 700° to 760° C with a current of 100 to 200 amperes on a molten aluminum cathode. Chlorine was evolved at a graphite anode and collected and measured to provide a quantitative evaluation of the AlC13 reduction. Aluminum was removed from the cell by siphoning or ladling. Granular AlC13 was added periodically to replenish that depleted from the electrolyte. Concentrations of 7.5 to 17.5 percent AlC13 in the electrolyte were optimum for operation. Anode current efficiencies of 83 to 85 percent were attained, using anode current densities of 5.9 amperes per square inch and an anode-cathode distance of 4 inches. The chemically bonded, alumina liner was resistant to attack by aluminum and chlorine but susceptible to erosion at the surface of the electrolyte. Titanium diboride proved suitable for the electrical connection to the molten aluminum cathode. Aluminum of a purity equal to or better than 1100 series metal was electrowon continuously from commercial AlC13 for a period of 4-1/2 months.
