"Thickeners/clarifiers are widely used in coal preparation plants, potash processing and other mineral processing facilities. Thickeners play a very important role in slurry treatment systems to accomplish solid/liquid separation. The demand for larger plants and the increased thickener handling capacities sometime require thickener diameters as large as 200m. The development and use of high capacity thickeners makes it possible to increase the handling capacity of these thickeners by several to more than 10 times compared to conventional thickeners. Hence, for a given slurry rate, selection of a high capacity thickener will significantly reduce the footprint of the thickener. Much higher handling rate, higher concentration of underflow, clearer overflow and lower capital cost are obvious advantages of high capacity thickeners; however, some process requirements and the concerns of operational cost, especially the flocculant cost of a high capacity thickener operation, keep some engineers selecting conventional thickeners and staying away from the high capacity thickeners. Forty years after the first high capacity thickener was developed, there are still arguments in the selection of conventional thickeners or high capacity thickeners in mineral processing. The arguments will continue unless there is a clear picture of capital cost vs. operational cost for each of the thickener types. The purpose of this paper is to analyze these costs and to provide guidelines for selection of thickeners. INTRODUCTIONThickeners/clarifiers are widely used in various slurry treatment systems. For mining and mineral processing, thickeners are an integral part of the solid/liquid separation system. The feed to the thickeners are processing slurries. The fundamental mechanism for the solids/liquid separation is for the solid particles in the slurry to gravity settle inside the thickener tank. The clear water overflows from the top of the thickener tank and is typically reused in the processing circuit, and the concentrated underflow is discharged to different downstream process systems depending on the application of the thickeners. The general requirements for a thickener operation include high density of underflow and clear overflow. Since thickener operation consists of continuous feeding, overflow and discharge of underflow, the solid particles will gravity settle against an upward flow with its velocity dependent on the feed rate and the underflow discharge rate. Higher feed rates to a given thickener produce higher upward velocities. Underflow discharge is typically relatively small compared to the amount of overflow. The upward flow tends to take particles up to the overflow. Only those particles having a settling velocity greater than the upward flow velocity will possibly settle out. Hence, thickener feed rate has to be controlled so that the required overflow water clarity can be achieved."

"AS I begin my remarks this morning, please let me say how honoured and gratified I was to receive your invitation to address you here during your deliberations in historic Quebec City. The high esteem in which your Institute is held is reflected in the respect and deference accorded to it by industry across Canada. I feel privileged to be here with you today.I would like to discuss with you some applications of natural gas in the mining industry and suggest to you, in closing, some possible avenues of future development.Natural gas first became avail-able for industrial purposes in Northern Ontario in late 1958. Acceptance of natural gas, as a source of energy by the industry of that area, has been both widespread and gratifying. The mining industry of Northern Ontario has in-creased its annual use of natural gas by approximately 35 per cent each year since 1958. We believe that this trend will continue, al-though we will probably have to accept a more modest 10 per cent annual gain as the market approaches saturation. I would like to explain how we were able to do this and where all this gas is used. Our first sales were largely a matter of price-and the savings we offered were substantial."

Petioles is a mining group with integrated operations in the smelting and refining of non-ferrous metals, and is also a chemicals producer. Peñoles is the world's foremost producer of refined silver, metallic bismuth and sodium sulphate and is the leading Latin American producer of refined gold, lead and zinc. The Met-Mex Petioles Zinc Plant commenced operations in 1973 with an annual production capacity of 105,000 t/y. Year after year the production has been increased, and at present, the production capacity is 240,000 t/y. In this paper, the leaching process, particularly the operation of the jarosite circuit and its effective removal of impurities such as arsenic, antimony, indium, selenium and tellurium, is reviewed.

Introduction It is generally conceded by flotation men that the condition at the surface of a particle of mineral or gangue is the most important factor controlling its behaviour in a flotation cell. Much research work has been devoted to the study of the forces that are active at the surface of the particle and of the effect of the surrounding solution upon these forces. Study of the relationship between mineral or gangue particles and gas bubbles indicates that, in the main at least, flotation is a physical phenomenon. The important factor, that of mineral-gas-bubble attachment, is unquestionably physical; however, modifications may be effected by chemical means, whereby the nature either of the surface of the particle or of the surrounding solution may be changed. For example, the coating of lead sulphide that forms on lead-carbonate ore particles when sodium sulphide is added greatly aids the flotation of the carbonate particles. Without going into the question as to why, under certain surface conditions, mineral particles will attach themselves to gas bubbles whereas under other conditions they will remain unaffected, it may be stated that there are three general conditions in a flotation pulp which control the attachment of the particle and the gas bubble.

"L'Abitibi québécois a produit essentiellement de l’or, du cuivre, du zinc et de I' argent, ainsi que de faibles quantités de nickel, de plomb, de molybdène, de bismuth, de lithium, de fer et d’amiante. Depuis l’ouverture de la mine Horne en 1927, cent-cinquante mines ont contribué à la production de 1 420 tonnes d’or de 4,1 millions de tonnes de cuivre et de 4,7 millions de tonnes de zinc. Les productions minières annuelles ont été d'importance variable: des records de production ont été établis en 1955 pour I' or avec 35 tonnes et, vers 1965, pour le cuivre, le zinc et la quantile globale de minerai extrait avec respectivement 130,000, 275 000 et 13 millions de tonnes. Deux dépressions généralisées ont eu lieu, l’une vers 1946 et l'autre, a lafin des années soixante-dix. Des ralentissements de la production ont été observes pour le cuivre en 1953 et le zinc en 1959. Depuis le debut des années quatre-vingt. I' or et, de façon plus irreguliere, le zinc sont en progression, landis que le cuivre, malgre une hausse en 1983. pour suit son dec/in.La teneur de récupération des mines d’or est demeurée régulière et n’a subi qu’une faible diminution au cours des quarante dernières années. Célie du cuivre a diminué d'environ 50% dans la même période, landis que celle du zinc a subi d’import antes variations, aussi bien positives que négatives. Près des trois quarts des mines d'or ont une durée de vie inférieure à 12 ans et la distribution des tonnages de minerai extrait montre un maximum pour la classe de 100 000 à 1 million de tonnes. Du cote des mines de métaux de base, la durée de vie est plus étalée et les volumes de minerai ont une occurrence maximale dans la classe de 1 à 10 millions de tonnes.Concernant la distribution géographique de la production minière dans l'Abitibi québécois, le camp minier de Rouyn-Noranda vient en tête pour l’extraction de minerai et la production d’or et de cuivre. L’est sui vi par le camp de Val d'Or pour le minerai et l’or, landis que le camp de Chapais-Chibougamau occupe la deuxième place pour le cuivre avec une production équivalence a 60% de celle de Rouyn-Noranda. Le camp de Cadillac-Malartic suit de tres pres celui de Val d'Or pour ce qui est de I' or. Finalement, dans le casdu zinc, le camp minier de Joutel-Matagami domine largement avec une production qui a connu un développement accélère depuis 1963. Une analyse pré liminaire de ces données indique qu' i/ subsiste unpotentiel encore élevé de production d'or, décuivre et de zinc dans I' Abitibi québécois. ABSTRACTThe Quebec portion of the Abitibi belt has essentially produced gold, copper, zinc and silver, as well as some small quantities of nickel, lead, molybdenum, bismuth, lithium, iron and asbestos. Since the opening of the Horne mine in 1927, one hundred and fifty mines have produced 1420 tons of gold, 4,1 millions tons of copper and4,7 millions tons of zinc. Annual mine production has fluctuated: production records were established in 1955 for gold with 35 tons, and around 1965 for all extracted ore copper and zinc with respectively 13 millions, 130 000 and 275 000 tons. Two main recessions have occurred, the first around 1946 and the second during the late seventies. Cut backs in copper and zinc production occurred in 1953 and1959. Since the beginning of the eighties, gold production and to a lesser extent zinc production have been in progression. Except for a small jump in 1983, copper production is still declining.The average recuperation grade of gold mines has been quite steady and has only slightly diminished in the past forty years. The average copper recuperation grade was halved during the same time interval. For zinc there have been important ups and downs. At least three quarters of gold mines have an average lifespan of 12 years the tonnage distribution shows a peak in the 100 000 to 1 million tons class. Base metals mines show a more widespread life expectancy and have a tonnage peak in the 1 to 10 millions tons range"

"Use of lime in seawater as a pyrite depressant decreases Mo recovery in flotation of Cu- Mo sulfide ores. When technology that uses sodium metabisulfite (MBS) to depress pyrite is applied, the process is carried out at pH 6.5–7.5, the range where Mo recovery is higher than the usual pH 11.0–12.0 when lime is applied. Redox conditions and chemical reactions involved in depression mechanisms of pyrite by MBS, or sodium sulfite, in seawater are investigated and discussed based on the acidifying effect of MBS, oxidation of sulfite ions by dissolved oxygen, and the role of catalyst of some metal cations (e.g., copper ions) adsorbed on pyrite’s surface.RÉSUMÉ L’utilisation de chaux dans de l’eau de mer comme agent déprimant de la pyrite réduit la récupération de molybdène (Mo) dans la flottation de minerais sulfurés de Cu-Mo. Lorsque l’on applique la technologie utilisant du métabisulfite (MBS) de sodium comme agent déprimant de la pyrite, le procédé se fait à un pH de 6,5 à 7,5, gamme dans laquelle la récupération de Mo est supérieure au procédé habituel utilisant un pH de 11,0 à 12,0 lorsque l’on applique de la chaux. Les conditions de réduction-oxydation (redox) et les réactions chimiques impliquées dans les mécanismes de dépression de la pyrite par le MBS (ou sulfite de sodium) dans de l’eau de mer sont étudiées et débattues sur la base de l’effet acidifiant du MBS, de l’oxydation des ions sulfites par de l’oxygène dissous et du rôle de catalyseur de certains cations métalliques (par exemple les ions de cuivre) adsorbés à la surface de la pyrite. INTRODUCTIONThe copper industry is aware of the difficulties of floating Cu-Mo sulfide ores in seawater. Molybdenum recovery is partially depressed when lime is used to reject pyrite. 1N THIS PAPER, the writer proposes to limit his comments to few generalized phases of the subject, based on his personal experience in the midwestern United 'States and in one section .of the Coal Branch in Western Alberta. The following statistics are submitted to show the importance that strip mining has assumed in the coal mining industry of the United States. In 1914, 1,281,000 tons of strip coal were produced, amounting to 0.3 per cent of the total production. In 1948, the total was 13~,505,000 tons, representing 23.3 per cent. In 1949, the percentage figure dropped slightly and this can be partially accounted for by the labour disturbances prevalent throughout the year. In 1914, there were 48 power shovels and draglines being used in the stripping of coal; in 1949 there were 3,712, not to mention other types of coal stripping equipment such as bulldozers, tractors and scrapers, rotary excavators, and stackers. At the bituminous coal mines in Western Canada, strip mining was introduced only a few years ago, two of the major reasons for its development being the need for increased production during the war and post-war years and the need to hold the line on increasing production costs, but even in these few years the percentage of strip production has in-creased to such an extent that some mines that, five or six years ago, were producing all their tonnage from underground operations are today obtaining up to 80 per cent of their total output from strip mines.

Mineral engineering is defined as those engineering activities that relate to the discovery, development and utilization of mineral resources. Using petroleum engineering as an example, it is shown that the breadth of the field to be studied is a major educational problem. Breadth of field is aggravated by the rapidity with which technological demands may change. At present, special short courses serve to update engineering education. Recent experience suggests an increased rate of change for the future. The fact that engineers have typically human needs and goals, and the fact that engineers respond to these in our free society, introduces a third class of problems. One approach to the solution of these problems is the unified engineering curriculum based on a core of subject mat-ter common to all engineering. Experience suggests that the unified curriculum is an effective method to minimize the importance of the first two problem areas presented, and shows a degree of success in handling some problems within the third area. Perhaps, for the good of all segments of society, it is best to have both career-oriented and unified curricula represented by educational institutions of high quality.

The object of this paper is to present an analysis of the major problems encountered both in the design and application of downhole drills. Particular reference is made to design features governed by: physical size limitations; metallurgical material standards; physical operating environment; range of commercial materials to be drilled; high power output required, coupled with simplicity from the operating and maintenance viewpoint; and bit design. The history of attempts to develop downhole drills is discussed, and representative mechanical configurations are illustrated. The general design and application aspects of the different types are commented on. The application of this drill type in various commercial fields, such as (a) oil-well drilling, (b) open-pit mining and (c) underground mining, is discussed, along with the limitations presently imposed by the commercial state of the art in the manufacture of accessory equipment; e.g., drill rods, air compressors, mountings, etc. Suggestions on the possible future direction of the development and application of this tool are put forth.

(EPL) is actively exploring for Zn-Pb deposits in the northern Cordillera in both carbonate-hosted and shale-hosted (sedex) environments. ?This presentation will review some of the significant carbonate-hosted Zn-Pb showings occurring in the Mackenzie Mountains, NWT and make limited comparisons with sedexdeposits in the adjacent Selwyn Basin.

"The ultimate aim of the Law of the Sea Conference, held under the auspices of the United Nations, is to ensure that all aspects of the use of the sea are covered by international law. The question facing the nations of the world can be stated as: "" Who will control and benefit from the use and the wealth of the sea?""The United Nations Conference on Law of the Sea - known as UNCLOS - which reconvened in New York during the latter part of August 1978 was the third such Conference in the UN's history. The concepts of sovereignty over the territorial sea and freedom on the high seas have remained fundamental to the international law o f the sea until our time. The legal regime based on these two concepts developed initially from state practice meant that the unilateral actions taken by one or more countries were eventually accepted and followed by others.It was not until 1958, during the first Geneva Conference on the Law of the Sea (pursued in a second Conference in 1960) that the Law of the Sea was codified and modified to a certain extent by the then independent nations of the world in the four multilateral conventions on territorial sea and contiguous zone, continental shelf, high seas, and fishing and conservation of living resources.A third Conference got under way many years later when the members of the UN met in New York at the end of 1973 for preliminary discussions . This meeting stemmed largely from the need to fill gaps in existing international legislation which did not cover the new uses of the sea. The Conference was subsequently reconvened a number of times - in Caracas (1974), in Geneva (1975) and twice in New York (1976) for what was called "" substantive negotiating sessions."" A sixth session was held in New York in 1977; a seventh, held in Geneva at the beginning of 1978, recessed and reconvened in New York at the end of August 1978. This is what is referred to, in international jargon, as the seventh session of the Third United Nations Conference on the Law o f the Sea. The following dates are the principal markers of a saga which began some twenty years ago with the purpose of regulating the use of the oceans."

WHEN Dr. Horace Fraser, your President, invited me to speak to you today I advised him in confidence that I was leaving my present positions on April 30th. In the circumstances it seemed to me that this audience might prefer to have as its speaker one who wo.uld J1ave a continuing association with the atomic energy programme. Dr. Fraser was kind enough to suggest that my re-marks might he of special interest to you, since I would be able to sum up my views on the atomic energy programme. I hope that I will not disappoint him or you on that score. I am particularly pleased that my last public appearance in my present positions should be at the Annual Convention of the C.I.M. since, as all of you know, a very important part of my work has been in the mining field. As it happens, my first public address on the subject of atomic energy and its raw material -uranium -was made at your Annual Convention in Montreal in April, 1949. It seems fitting that my final address should also be made at this convention -nine years later.

This paper reviews the circumstances that led to the development and construction of a commercial-scale vertical shaft carbonizer at Conmore, Alberta. This form coking process may be regarded as having potential application in other areas. Coal pelletizing offers a promising method of decreasing coal agglomeration costs under certain circumstances. Pellets can be rolled easily from -35-mesh coal, provided that a minimum of -200-mesh coal is present. Bentonite was found to be the best binder and was most effective when added in amounts of about 2 per cent. The water content of the coal pellets was observed to vary from 18 to 23 per cent. As a by-product of this investigation, it seems possible that fine coal could be converted into stoker feed by this process. A short investigation of the effect of heating rate on the carbonization of pellets was conducted. In 1958, the Iron Ore Company of Canada decided to proceed with the Carol Project. The ore deposits in the area are part of the highly metamorphosed southern zone of the Labrador Trough. They lie along the shore of W a bush lake, in the western part of Newfoundland-Labrador, 190 miles north of Sept-Iles. The project is designed to mine, by open-pit methods, 17,200,000 long tons of crude ore, grading 37 per cent iron, per year. This ore will be beneficiated to produce 7,000,000 long tons of concentrate, grading 66 per cent iron, of which 5,500,000 long tons will be pelletized. Production is scheduled to commence this summer. Initially, ore will be taken from 45-foot benches in the Smallwood mine, using jet-piercing production drills and large-scale blasting with "slurry" explosives. Four 13-yard electric shovels will muck the broken ore into 100-ton trailer trucks. The trailers will be hauled to two 2,000-ton loading pockets, which feed the ore into 100-ton railcars. The formulation of a theoretical basis for the evaluation of in-situ coal through the use of geophysical logs is outlined. This involved the development of an approach to the interpretation of resistivity in environments having multiple conductive and non-conductive components. Utilizing this approach and other conventional interpretation techniques, a program was developed yielding accurate determinations of the in-situ percentages of coal, water and ash for the evaluation of coal deposits. Basic information obtained from the CWA program can be utilized in numerous aspects of total mine planning . Some examples of the practical application of this method are included.

"The Search Minerals Foxtrot project in Labrador represents a significant Canadian resource of rare earth elements rich in the sought after heavy rare earth elements (19.8% HREE/TREE). A preliminary economic assessment of the project indicated that the project is technically feasible and economically attractive. A variety of metallurgical test programs have been undertaken which have led to significant streamlining and simplification of the process flowsheet. The improved flowsheet should allow Search to reach production earlier and will use conventional processing equipment. The results of these test programs are presented and discussed in this paper INTRODUCTIONSearch Minerals Inc. (Search) is exploring and developing a number of deposits for rare earth element (REE) recovery in Labrador, Canada. The Port Hope Simpson District is in the southeast of Labrador and is highly prospective for heavy and light rare earth elements. The Foxtrot deposit sits within the Port Hope Simpson REE District (Figure 1), which is 70 km long by up to 10 km wide. The infrastructure available at Foxtrot is excellent; a deep-water port, air strip, and road and power infrastructure are pre-existing at St. Lewis. The three communities of Port Hope Simpson, St. Lewis and Mary’s Harbour are in close proximity to the site."

ABSTRACT The versatility and specificity of rare earth elements (REEs) have led to their use in an everincreasing variety of applications in new technologies; consequently, demand for REEs has increased significantly. However, separating REEs safely and effectively is a complex and expensive process. This paper presents a review of REE mineral processing technologies, providing an update on current capabilities in REE mineral processing and REE extraction from the major commercially valuable REEbearing minerals such as bastnaesite, monazite, and xenotime, as well as the ion-absorption type of REE deposits.

THE property of McKenzie Red Lake Gold Mines, Limited, consists of eleven claims located on McKenzie island in Red lake. The mine is about 4,Y:l miles by water from the Howey townsite on the same lake, and about 95 miles north of Kenora, Ont. (see Figure 4). Mail and express are flown-in daily, winter and summer, from Sioux Lookout, Hudson, Kenora, and Winnipeg. All heavy supplies are freighted-in during the summer over a water route, using four marine railway portages, from Hudson, Ont., a distance of about 180 miles. During the winter, freighting over the same route is clone by tractor if necessary, but costs are three to four rimes the summer rate. Due to these conditions, large inventories of supplies must be kept on hand, varying from a spring minimum of $45,000 to a peak of $110,000 early in November. The average cost of all freight brought in from steel during 1937 was $0.01 per pound.

Kimber/ires are intrusive rocks whose main constituenr, olivine, has been altered entirely or almosr enrirely ro serpentine. Texture usually is porphyritic, superimposed upon a brecciared one. Diamonds are found only in kimberlites, and are present in economic quantities only in about I% of all kimberlites known. Two glacial drift diamonds, one near Peterborough and one near Timmins, both in Ontario, have been found in Canada and are believed to have been eroded and rransporred from their original source by glaciers. Many more glacial drift diamonds have been found sourh of rhe Great Lakes in the United States, parricularly in Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin . There are nine known kimberlire occurrences in Canada. Diamonds have been located in rwo of rhem: on lie Bizard near Monrreal and on Somerset Island in the Northwesr Terrirories. The lie Bizard occurrence comprises three kimberlire diarremes; samples of rhe largest one revealed JO riny diamonds totalling 0.0537 carars. The Somerset Island kimberlites are rhe mosr significant yet discovered in Canada. Ar leasr 19 separare kimberlite occurrences are known on rhe island. Testing by Diapros Canada Lim ired, however, revealed only "a few small diamonds". fr is likely rhar, wirh enough time and funds, additional kimberlires, possibly bearing economic quanriries of diamonds, will be found in Canada.
