Introduction THE Sullivan mine and the milling, smelting, and refining operations of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company are sufficiently well known to make unnecessary anything more than a very brief account of the events which led up to this Company's branching out into the chemical industry. This development is the result of the 26 per cent sulphur content of the Sullivan ore. Seventy-five to eighty per cent of this sulphur enters the mill tailing, which is stocked at Kimberley. The remainder, contained in the lead and zinc concentrate, is burned off in the first treatments at Trail. Prior to this new development, the sulphur gas was wasted to the atmosphere. In spire of its great dilution with air and discharge from stacks at high elevations above the plant, some damage to vegetation close to the plant was experienced. It had always been apparent that this sulphur should be recovered and utilized if possible, at the same rime relieving, or curing, the smoke nuisance, and constant studies with this in view had, therefore, been maintained. One of the early conclusions reached was that the Canadian prairies would ultimately require large quantities of phosphate fertilizers, as had been the experience of older countries, and that these fertilizers would constitute a large outlet for sulphuric acid which could be made from smelter gases. This conclusion prompted a widespread search for phosphate rock, particularly in British Columbia and western Alberta, with the result that low-grade beds were discovered in the Crowsnest district and to the north therefrom through extensive areas (1). Following these discoveries, an experimental plant was built at Trail for the production of triple superphosphate in order to facilitate field-tests in fertilizing prairie lands.

"Artificial Intelligence includes excellent tools for the control and supervision of industrial processes. Several thousand industrial applications have been reported worldwide. Recently, the designers of the A1 systems have begun to hybridize the intelligent techniques, expert systems, fuzzy logic and neural networks, to enhance the capability of the A1 systems. Expert systems have proved to be ideal candidates especially for the control of mineral processes.As successful case projects, an expert system based on on-line classification of the feed type using neural data analysis is described in this paper. The essential feature of this expert system is the classification of different feed types and their distinct control strategies at the plant. In addition to the classification, the expert system has a database containing information about how to handle the determined feed type. This self-leaming database scans historical process data to suggest the best treatment for the ore type under processing. The system has been tested in the Outokumpu Finnmines Oy, Hitura mine. Other projects have been reported to be in progress.INTRODUCTIONIn the past ten years considerable researches have been done in the application of artificial intelligent methods in process industry. The technologies of fuzzy logic, neural networks and expert systems have received several thousand applications worldwide: monitoring and analysis of process operations, fault diagnosis, supervisory control, feedback control and scheduling and planning of operations. Recently, the designers of these systems have begun to hybridize these intelligent techniques to enhance the current capability of expert system. Complex signal processing, neural networks, fuzzy logic and rule-based systems are also implemented to develop new so-called smart or intelligent sensors, actuators or components. Field buses are playing a more and more important role in automation systems and in imbedded systems. The development of field buses has allowed the distribution of smart components over networks."

The Paracatu Expansion Project III in Brazil was implemented between 2006 and 2008 to increase the existing capacity from 20 to 61 Million tons per year of gold ore treatment. This expansion led the Brazilian subsidiary of the Canadian Kinross Gold Corporation to become the single largest gold producer in Brazil and the largest single gold concentrator in the world, with a nominal capacity to treat around 167,000 tons per day of ore. This paper describes the Project Development areas for the Paracatu Expansion, using the approach proposed by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the methodology included in the PMBOK (Project Management Book of Knowledge). The author has more than 20 years of experience in the gold mining industry, having worked as a plant metallurgist, mill superintendent and development manager for RPM until he took the position as the Project Manager of the Paracatu Expansion III in 2005. Luis Tondo has a BSc in Mining Engineering from UFRGS-Brazil, an MScEng from the University of Queensland - Australia and an MBA degree from FDC-Brazil. Luis is currently based in Santiago-Chile, acting as the Project Director for developing projects in Latin America for the Kinross Gold Corporation.

"The Lorraine property is located in the northern Intermontane Belt, north-central British Columbia. The property is underlain by intrusive rocks of the Duckling Creek Syenite Complex, an Early Jurassic, alkaline phase of the Late Triassic-Early Cretaceous Hogem Batholith. Two significant zones of copper-gold mineralization have been explored to date; the Main zone (historical Upper and Lower deposits) and the recently discovered Extension zone. A combined geological resource was estimated in 1975 for the Main zone deposits at 10 million tonnes averaging 0.7% Cu, and from 0.1 g/t Au to 0.34 g/t Au. The Extension zone, still at an exploration stage, is estimated to be considerably smaller than the Main zone.Copper-gold mineralization at Lorraine Mountain exhibits characteristics suggestive of both magmatic and hydrothermal origins, and may be related to orthomagmatic-hydrothermal fluid flow contemporaneous with magmatism and development of migmatitic fabrics. A depth greater than the depth of formation of classical porphyries may explain many of the variations displayed by mineralization at Lorraine. These characteristics distinguish Lorraine from other members of the alkalic suite of porphyry Cu-Au deposits in the Canadian Cordillera.IntroductionThe Lorraine prospect is located in the Omineca Mountains, at the headwaters of Duckling Creek, 56 km northwest of Germansen Landing (Fig. 1). The property is centred at latitude 55°55'N, longitude l25°26'W on NTS mapsheet 93N/14W. The area is typified by mountains of moderate relief, with elevations ranging from 1150 m in the valleys to peaks of 2000 m. Valleys are U-shaped and blanketed by glacial till which give way to steep, talus covered slopes and sharp ridges. Outcrop is generally limited to elevations above 1600 m (Fig. 2)."

"Kinross Gold Corporation’s Mantos de Oro (MDO) gold/silver mine in northern Chile currently processes 15,000 tpd of oxide ores through a mill, whole ore cyanide leach plant followed by a Merrill-Crowe refinery. With the expected depletion of these oxide ores in a few years a new sulphide mineral deposit, Ladera-Farellón has been identified to potentially replace existing ore reserves. The deposit contains approximately 0.5g/t Au, 6g/t Ag and 0.5% Cu. The principal sulphide mineral in the deposit is enargite (Cu3AsS4) which hosts the majority of gold and silver and the copper. Direct cyanidation testwork has shown the sulphide mineral is refractory with a low gold recovery of 36% and silver recovery of 45%. Oxidation of the sulphides is required to liberate gold and silver and allow recovery of copper as an important pay-metal. Therefore, at MDO a new metallurgical process route with oxidation as a pretreatment step is required for viable treatment of such new sulphide mineralized material with acceptable recoveries of pay-metals.Analysis of flowsheet options was completed based on bench-scale and pilot scale metallurgical testwork as well as with reference to existing studies and operations. The process options investigated assume concentration of sulphides by flotation, followed by either pressure oxidation, bacteriological oxidation or roasting. Preliminary evaluation of flowsheet options focused on process risk, operability, technology availability and the economics of the project with emphasis on use of the existing metallurgical plant to reduce capital cost. Operating costs for each process option were also included in the relative analysis.The challenges of treatment of MDO sulphides, principally enargite and pyrite for recovery of gold, silver and copper center on fixation of arsenic and sulphur capture with environmentally acceptable disposal of residue tailings. This environmental focus was included in the process option selection and comparative analysis.This paper presents a review of the process options considered and highlights comparative advantages/disadvantages of each process with associated environmental issues. Preliminary conclusions are drawn on roasting as a potentially favorable process option for the treatment of MDO sulphides."

"This paper describes the implementation of model-based predictive control (MPC) on a vacuum heat exchange network at Alcan's Jonquière Complex. The plant produces alumina from bauxite ore using the Bayer Process.The MPC system was commissioned in 2000, by Alcan personnel and an Advanced Control Engineer from Matrikon. The application has achieved an uptime of about 97%.The benefits were:• Energy savings : 0.5% - live steam reduction• Reduced variation: standard deviation of key temperatures reduced by 50%• Plant throughput increase: via the automated use of surge tanks• Decreased supervision time: by plant operations• Faster and easier diagnosis of problems and plant constraintsThe benefits were higher than expected with a payback time around 12 months.The purpose of the vacuum heat exchange network is to recover energy from a hot stream (pregnant liquor) by transferring it to a cold stream (spent liquor). The system is very tightly coupled, and the main constraints of the multivariable control system are: • to control the many tank levels involved in the process (8 tanks)• to maximize the temperature of the heated streams (spent liquor)• to prevent cooled streams (pregnant liquor) from cooling to below a minimum temperatureThe system includes 9 manipulated, 14 controlled and 2 feedforward variables.The advanced control implementation runs under an expert system environment and provides added flexibility to the overall control strategy."

The benefits of using a centrifugal field to concentrate both coarse and fine gold are well documented but the placement of these machines within grinding circuits is still evolving. Conventional wisdom dictates that the best location for enhanced gravity machines is cyclone underflow on account of the elevated grade found in this stream when compared to cyclone feed or overflow. Plant operating experience at both large and small scale indicates that there are compelling arguments to place ENHANCED GRAVITY MACHINES on cyclone feed instead. "Mechanical behavior of rock joints is often the key factor governing the response of complex structures constructed in fractured rock masses such as underground openings or of objects assembling various stones blocks such as historical building walls or damaged marble statues. This paper aims at developing a theoretical model to describe the behavior of fresh joints based on the description of their morphology. The main idea of the model is to establish a link between the effective contact surface of joints and the frictional coefficient. Beginning from a chosen level of joint surface description where a joint is considered as “smooth”, the model describes the added friction with respect to the increase of the contact surface of the joints and the distribution of stress in these contacts. The model developed initially for asperities with regular geometry is firstly compared with existing models and then applied on fresh artificial joints. For that, healthy artificial joints have been characterised using in one hand classical CNL shearing tests and in another hand the morphology of joints. The joints surfaces are digitized before testing using a high resolution laser scanner (Konica Minelota Vivid 910) allowing to obtain a precision up to 10µm. From these scanned surfaces the morphology of joints is characterised on the profiles running in the direction of shearing and a mean value of friction is calculated using the developed model. This calculated value is then compared with that obtained from CNL shearing test and a good approximation is notedINTRODUCTIONThe role of the mechanical behavior of rock joints on the overall response of fractured rock masses is well established in many fields of engineering activity going from the stability of underground constructions (Souley M, Hoxha D, Homand F 1999), rock slope stability (Einstein H.H. Veneziano D., Baecher GB., O’Reilly K.J, 1983, Jaeger 1971), various rehabilitation of masonry construction, damaged stone artworks restoration (Michel L., Do D.P, Coignard B, Hoxha, 2014) and so on. In the same time the characterisation of the behavior of joints and their modeling is nowadays a dynamic field of research or/and investigations and many alternative approaches have been proposed (Barton, N.R. and Choubey, V. 1977, Tatone, S.A. Bryan, Grasselli Giovanni 2010, William C E. 2007). While empirical relations of shear strength with various parameters of the joint morphology are the most used in practice because of their simplicity (Barton. and Choubey, 1977, Barton 1973, Bandis S., Lumsden A. C. and Barton N. R. 1983) many other models of joint strength are developed based on mechanistic considerations (Haberfield CM, Johnston IW. 1994), multiscale approaches (Yang Z.Y., Di C.C., Yen K.C. 2001, Fardin N., O. Stephansson, Lanru Jing 2001) or micromechanical ones (A. Serrano, C. Olalla, R.A. Galindo 2014) to mention just a few of research trends on rock joints modeling."

The supply of clean copper ores, which have high copper concentration and low impurities like arsenic, has declined year by year. Therefore, both mine and smelter sides have to consider how to remove impurities like arsenic. We focus herein on arsenic as an impurity because it is an extremely important issue from the environmental point of view. Approximately 150,000 t of arsenic is input into the copper industry every year. A small part of it is mainly treated in the smelting side. For instance, Ministro Hales Limited, which is a mining corporation in Chile, has performed the calcination process to remove arsenic from ore with high-arsenic content. In the process, flue gas is washed by water, and the final residue is treated by a hydrometallurgical process. Many processes for arsenic removal in various stages have been proposed, and several bottlenecks exist to achieve it. One of the difficulties encountered is getting an assessment of the process, which depends on the countries and/or areas of operation. The standardization of the assessment procedure will be desired in the near future to keep the same environment standards all over the world, and now is the time to start making discussions on this matter. This will be the first step in making an international assessment procedure for arsenic treatment in the copper industry. INTRODUCTION Using the term “sustainable development” without any scientific basis can give people a false sense of security. Engineers and scientists must analyze the total mass flow of energy and materials and estimate local drain on the environment as well as the global impact of a particular industrial activity to ensure sustainability on this planet. The operations of the mining and smelting industries have a strong effect on the environment even if they provide useful materials for human beings. The copper mining and smelting industries have brought about serious environmental problems in the past. For example, the Ashio mine pollution caused big damage to the agricultural sector near the Ashio area in Japan in the late 19th century. One of the most serious problems at that time was SO2 emission because copper ore is sulfide, and the smelting process basically results to sulfur oxidation. The resource balance from a copper smelter in a year, assuming a total production of 16 million tons, can be summarized as follows: discarded minerals, 30 billion tons; sulfur, 16 million tons; iron oxide, 8 million tons; additional smaller amounts of other metals, electricity, and fuel.

"THE TOWN OF Salmo, rail centre for the Salmo lead-zinc mining district, is in southeastern British Columbia 26 miles by road east of Trail an about the same distance south of Nelson. The belt in which the mines occur is a few miles east of Salmo and extends about 6 miles north of the town and 17 miles south and southwest to the International Boundary. The belt includes the H. B. mine of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, the Jersey mine of Canadian Exploration Limited, the Reeves MacDonald mine, and the Jack Pot property of New Jersey Zinc Explorations Limited.Since 1949, the Jersey and Reeves MacDonald mines have produced most of the lead and zinc in the district. From 1949 through 1954 these two mines together produced a total of 233,134 ounces of silver, 87,659,399 pounds of lead, 215,708,856 pounds of zinc and 475,397 pounds of cadmium. This amounts to more than 80 per cent of the total production of lead and 95 per cent of the total production of zinc from the district since the first recorded production in 1906. Reserves at the largest properties amount to several million tons of ore containing 4 to 7 per cent combined lead and zinc. Several prospects are potential producers.Regional StructureThe main structural units in the Salmo area are outlined in Figure I, and the major rock units of the stratigraphic column are listed in the following table. The lead and zinc deposits are replacements in a highly deformed limestone formation near the base of the Laib group, and all mineralized zones are on the south and east side of structural unit 2 (see Figure I)."

"IntroductionThe history of iron ore production in the United States has followed a pattern not far different from that set in the production of non-ferrous ores; the first interest of the prospector and miner being the discovery and development of high-grade ores. In the early stages of development of most mining districts, high-cost low-grade ores are usually of slight interest due to the additional capital investment required in concentrating plants, as well as the increased requirements of •power and other facilities. As the reserves of higher grade ores are depleted and the technical knowledge of ore beneficiation is broadened, production of concentrates from the lower grade ores is stimulated.The real stimulus necessary to arouse serious consideration of beneficiated iron ore in the Lake Superior district has been provided by the serious inroads made in the high-grade ore reserves by two World Wars.The first shipment of high-grade iron ore from the Mesabi range in Minnesota was recorded in 1892, and the first token shipment of concentrates was made 15 years later, in 1907. Not until 1910 did the production of concentrates assume any great importance. A steady increase in concentrate production over the years is shown by the fact that, in 1910, concentrates accounted for 8 per cent of the total shipments from the State, whereas by the time of World War II this percentage had increased to 22 per cent and by 1948 had risen to 26 per cent. It seems a safe assumption that the shipment of concentrated iron ore, from the Mesabi range in particular, will continue to increase even more rapidly from now on, with other iron ranges of the Lake Superior district following this lead."

"Vitrokele ™ is a synthetic adsorbent, using chelating groups on large polystyrene beads, developed in Canada over 7 years ago, and first commercialised in 1985 to recover noxious metals from plating wastes.Pilot plant trials have been performed in Australia and Canada to demonstrate the recovery of cyanide and removal of metal cyanide complexes from gold plant effluent using Vitrokele1 M 912. The pilot plants comprise a simple adsorption train (similar to a CIP circuit) followed by complete elution facilities, so that loaded Vitrokele™ can be stripped and returned to the adsorption circuit.An account of these campaigns is provided, showing the reduction of total CN levels from over 200 ppm to less than 0.5 ppm and Cu levels from approximately 100 ppm to less than 0.3 ppm in treated tailings.Comparisons between pilot plant results and laboratory test data are given and probable future work on the process and its application to the gold mining industry is discussed.INTRODUCTIONThrough millions of years of evolution, life forms have developed specialised molecules with exceptionally high affinity and selectivity for various metals such as iron, cobalt, zinc and copper.In the early 80's professors at the Faculty of Medicine of McGill University engaged in research on the extremely efficient ways that living cells captured trace metals essential for life.As research progressed, it became evident that the special molecules used by biological systems to capture metals could be synthesized to capture selected metals with similar efficiency from water or other solutions.The technology was first commercialised in 1985 to recover noxious metals from plating wastes with compositions applying the special molecules (chelating groups) on vitreous particles (hence Vitrokele™). To date approximately three commercial Vitrokele™ plants have been installed for treating plating waters in Ontario and Quebec."

"Chalk rocks have been used for centuries as a strong building material and for the production of lime. The shallow underground room-and-pillar quarries where the chalk was extracted are now abandoned and endure the effects of time and weathering, increasing their risk of collapse. The risk of instability, involving natural or anthropic underground structures, is an issue for more than 10 000 towns in France.In order to investigate the causes of underground quarry collapse and to aid prevention strategies, we carried out a study of the physico-mechanical behaviour and ageing of chalk in abandoned pillars in two underground quarries, in situ-instrumented by INERIS, in the Parisian Basin, France. Core samples were drilled horizontally from pillars in the Saint-Martin-Le-Noeud dolomitic chalk quarry (Oise, France) and the Estreux glauconitic chalk quarry (Nord, France).Uniaxial tests were performed on dry and saturated cylindrical plug samples extracted perpendicular to the cores at regular distances along their lengths. Physical and mechanical properties were obtained. The dolomitic chalk (Saint-Martin-Le-Noeud) exhibits variation in mechanical and physical properties with horizontal pillar depth. Both density and compressive strength seem to increase outwards from the pillar-core to the pillar-wall. This is the opposite of that would be expected from a purely mechanical point of view. SEM analysis revealed progressive degradation and homogeneity of the grains from the edge to the inside of the pillar. At the pillar wall, the crystal faces are well-defined, almost euhedral, and the grains are of variable size. In contrast, at the inside of the pillar, crystals are finer-grained and are anhedral with highly degraded edges. In the physico-mechanical tests and SEM analyses performed on the Estreux samples, no significant variation was observed between the pillar-walls and pillar-core. However, dissolution marks were observed along the entire length of the half-pillar core."

The use of dewatered mine tailings as backfill material (commonly referred to as ‘paste’ backfill), is the most practiced form of backfill in Canada providing significant environmental benefits by reducing the size of external tailings facilities and improved economics through enhanced resource recovery. Paste backfill operations reuse filtered mine tailings with a cementitious binder and water to create a slurry that is hydraulically transported to refill underground stopes, later forming a structural network of cemented tailings in the mine stopes. Unlike typical structural applications that utilize General Use (GU) Portland cement; modern paste backfill operations maximize strength performance by blending Portland cement with ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) or other supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). GGBFS and other SCMs offer key performance benefits and carbon reductions; however, the availability of these SCMs is rapidly dwindling in today’s carbon-constrained economy. This paper examines the development of an alternative binder system that provides similar performance and carbon reduction to that of GGBFS for mine backfill operations. The binder utilizes the chemical reaction between a reactive source of aluminosilicates and available calcium from calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide to replace between 50 to 100% of GGBFS. The performance of the binder is examined with insights into the hydration mechanisms that generate mechanical strength in the cemented paste network. Paste backfill slurries require precise engineering to create a material that maintains flowability during pipeline transport and generates enough strength to meet operational targets once placed in the stopes. Engineering of such slurries requires large amounts of water to be added to the binder-tailings matrix, far exceeding the typical water to binder ratios used in concrete mix designs. This characteristic of paste backfill warrants great emphasis on understanding the hydration mechanisms of the binder used in the paste backfill system. GU cement is typically composed of 50-70% tricalcium silicate and 15-30% dicalcium silicate.  The hydration mechanisms of these compounds consume 4 to 6 units of water to mineralize into calcium silicate hydrate cemented phases that result in compressive strength development. Cementitious aluminate and aluminosilicate phases make up 5-20% of GU cement and aid in secondary performance characteristics such as set time. Certain calcium aluminate hydrate phases such as monocarboaluminate and ettringite mineralize 10 to 32 units of water into their crystalline structure. Hydration products such as ettringite are traditionally avoided in construction applications due to their propensity for volumetric expansion after cement setting, leading to micro-fissures and subsequent strength degradation (known as ‘sulfate attack’). This paper proposes that such hydration products benefit the strength development in paste backfill slurries with the aforementioned characteristics due to their greater potential to mineralize free water. The newly developed calcium aluminosilicate binder is designed to replace 50-100% GGBFS or other SCMs used in paste backfill systems and meet operational strength requirements by providing exceptional hydration characteristics through cementitious reactions. "In 1974, Copperfields Mining Corporation and Soquem formed a new company, Niobec Inc, to bring the niobium deposit of the St-Honore carbonatite into production.St-Honore is located in the Saguenay area, near the cities of Chicoutimi and Arvida, and about one hundred and forty (140) miles north of Quebec. The discovery of the carbonatite complex was made in the fall of 1967 as a result of an airborne radiometric survey in search of uranium. The detailed exploration of the carbonatite indicated two niobium-bearing formations besides the original discovery of a rare earths zone. During the following years, the niobium formations were defined by diamond drilling and a decline was driven down to obtain adequate samples for metallurgical evaluation. In 1974, after seven hundred (700) bench scale tests, eleven (11) months of pilot plant 2nd a worldwide market research, a joint decision was made to initiate the development of a fifteen hundred (1500) T.P.D. mine and mill, under the management of Teck Corporation. The construction of the facilities were completed in early 1976 both on time and within budget. Niobec is now the only north american and the world second largest producer of Niobium concentrate.The process used at Niobec was developed from the pilot plant programs and later modified by the mill personnel. A simplified flowsheet for this process is shown on the slide. Briefly, run of mine ore is crushed to minus 5/8"" and fed to a rod mill, ball mill, and screens circuit where the ore is ground to 92% passing 65 mesh. The ore is deslimed in two stages of cycloning, and the final cyclone overflow at 85% minus 11 microns goes to waste. The cyclone underflow is conditioned prior to flotation of a carbonate-apatite concentrate. This concentrate is cleaned twice and then pumped to tails. The carbonate rougher and cleaner tails are cycloned in two stages to change the process; water and then sent to the pyrochlore rougher flotation. The rougher concentrate is cleaned five times. This is followed by pyrite flotation to remove sulfur, leaching with hydrochloric acid to remove phosphorus and dyed to less than 0.1% moisture before being sent to packaging."

"""Preg-robbing"" of gold by carbonaceous matter during the cyanidation of certain types of carbonaceous gold ores is well documented. Recent studies established that ""preg-robbing"" of gold is not limited to carbonaceous matter. Gold sorbed on the surface of pyrite grains was detected and quantified by TOF-LIMS (Time of Flight Laser Ionization Mass Spectrometry). Crystallites of pyrite from a number of ores from different geological environments have been shown to have gold on their surface apparently sorbed from the ore forming solutions. Surface gold accounts for significant fractions of the gold head assay. Preg-robbing of gold by pyrite from pregnant cyanide solutions was also documented, and accounts for significant losses to tailings. Preventative measures are discussed.1.0 IntroductionThe detection and subsequent quantification of gold sorbed on the surface of pyrite particulates came about during routine determinations of the deportment of gold employing the comprehensive mineralogical approach (Chryssoulis and Cabri, 1990). In some pyritic gold ores it was discovered that the sum of the various forms in which gold ""conventionally"" occurs, was short of the gold assay. The mineralogical procedure used involves the independent determination of each fraction of gold, in other words there is no form of gold which is calculated ""by difference"". The systematic shortfall after having added the forms of gold listed in Table 1 led to the inquiry for the 'missing' gold and its discovery on the surface of pyrite grains, such as crystal facets and fractured surfaces.Preg-robbing of gold by pyrite from pregnant solutions was first described by Lloyd. In his studies, preg-robbing was measured by changes in the solutions/solids gold assays. This paper describes the first application of a direct measurement method for surface gold on pyrite particles from untreated and processed samples, its impact on gold deportment and processing. The advantage of the direct measurement lies in the absence of interference from other forms of gold, leading to more accurate and precise determinations of this unconventional form of gold."

"The Phase I Mill at Cluff Lake in northern Saskatchewan was designed to accommodate a very specific high grade uranium ore. As this high grade ore was depleted, construction was undertaken on a new mill circuit (Phase 2) to process a more conventional lower grade ore deposit.The Phase 2 Mill expanded the ore throughput to 800 tonnes per day. The new process employs crushing, grinding, leaching, counter—current decantation, solvent extraction and magnesia yellowcake precipitation and drying to produce a yellowcake concentrate.This paper discusses the process decisions required for this expansion and outlines the new mill circuit. Included is a review of the start up in August, 1984.1.,INTRODUCTION The Cluff Lake Uranium deposit is located 720 kilometers north of Saskatoon in northern Saskatchewan. A high grade deposit was discovered in 1970 with the first production taking place in 1980 after lengthy hearings. The original mill (or Phase 1 Mill) was specifically designed to accommodate this very high grade ore for a very limited plant life.Pilot plant work was carried out in 1981 on the other lower grade ores found in the immediate Cluff Lake area. Feasibility and process selection studies were then undertaken as the Phase 1 mill was nearing its end of life. These studies were completed in March 1983 when approval was given to construct the new Phase 2 mill."
