The introduction of 'post' pillar mining at the Strathcona mine represents a new approach to ground support in cut-and-fill applications. The method has also shown significant economic advantages. It is believed that the development of this concept is one of the few examples where rock mechanics principles have successfully been applied in the development of a stoping method. The paper describes the evolution of this method and contains discussions on the theoretical analysis of the technical, operational and economics aspects of the system. Pillar design procedures and field observations on the practical application of theoretical analysis are also outlined.

Nevsun Resources Ltd. Bisha Mine Project is a gold and base metal development project in the Gash Barka region of west-central Eritrea. The project has the potential to be one of the largest industrial developments in the country, and Eritreans have no experience in modern mining. Nevsun recognized early that the success of the Bisha Project would require meaningful consultation and engagement with all levels of Eritrean society. Meaningful engagement required not only full disclosure, but also capacity building from government officials at all levels to other stakeholders who live in the nearby communities. This paper describes the approach used to develop capacity and to help introduce a modern mining culture in a country without previous experience in mining.

The feasibility assessment of a mineral deposit requires the construction of a geo mechanical model of rock mass properties, for the purpose of preliminary mine design. The Noranda Technology Centre has been involved in the development of geomechanical models for several mineral deposits at the feasibility stage. Each model is constructed through intact rock testing, geotechnical core logging, geotechnical mapping and rock mass classification. Rock mechanics principles are used to develop conceptual stope designs and propose possible mining sequences. This methodology is applicable to both new mining projects and to the development of new areas within anoperating mine. This paper explains how the geomechanical model is developed and reviews its application to several case studies.

Modification of the silicon in Al-Si alloys can be performed by adding a very small amount of some elements like Na, Sr and Ca to alter the form of silicon from an acicular shape to a fine fibrous one. This modification results in a considerable improvement in mechanical properties especially elongation, Metallographic observations in A356 alloy indicated the degree of the modification with Na, Sr and Ca, They showed that the effect of Ca as a modifier is not as strong as is Na or Sr while Na is the most effective modifier, Although modifiers improve mechanical properties, they also increase porosity in castings, The reduced pressure test (RPT) and Tatur test showed that the increasing porosity with Na is the most and with Sr is the least.

"Excavation, the principal mining process, 'which hitherto has been based largely on the intuition and logic of mining men, is increasingly receiving the attention of engineers and scientists versed in rock mechanics. The paper intro-duce the principles of this science in simplified form, directed both to underground and open-pit mining. Reference is made to the large annual tonnage from ore and rock excavations, which in 1967 were responsible for 250 million tons of mineral production in Canada.The urge to transform excavation into a continuous instead of an interrupted process is discussed with references to the various types of energies employed or proposed in rock breakage or excavation. Due to the rapid decay of applied energy in the discontinuous and heterogeneous rock environment, large confined blasts proposed for in-situ mining do not give much expectation of success as yet. Raises and ventilating shafts are already bored in reasonably hard rock. Tunnelling machines will be used for drifting and cross-cutting in the future, but continuous mining machines of the cuttmg and shearing type are not 'around the corner' for stoping typical orebodies. On the other hand, bed mining, particularly of coal, has led the way in continuous mining, and Remotely Operated Long-wall Face (ROLF) experiments are progressing in an encouraging way. Some reflections on the mining environment in relation to the human element are made."

"Resource development in northern Canada has special requirements which derive from the unique environmental and eco-logical nature of the northern environment. In this paper several case histories in which the Permafrost Research Section of the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) has participated are used to illustrate how geophysical methods may be used to address some of these considerations. Although some of these examples were developed while examining problems directly related to oil and gas development and transport in frontier regions, such or similar methods also have application to mining problems.IntroductionA critical parameter is the distribution and thickness of permafrost, which in northern Canada varies from being a few metres and discontinuous at the southern limit to thicknesses in excess of 700 m in the Arctic Islands'!'. Figure I is a schematic diagram of typical ground thermal conditions in a permafrost zone. The upper zone is defined by an active layer which undergoes a seasonal freeze/thaw cycle. In the simplest case, the ground remains permanently frozen below the active layer to the depth of the O°C isotherm, which is defined as the base of the permafrost. Water chemistry, pore structure and pore or grain size may cause the base of the frozen ground to be above the permafrost by up to 100 m(2). Ice can be found within the permafrost in the pores of solid rock or sediments, as massive ice within unconsolidated sediments or as ice lenses within fissures in a solid rock mass. The mining technique used in these conditions, whether open pit or underground, can differ considerably from that used in southern Canada. In the high Arctic, for instance, the dry drift method is feasible underground in the permanently frozen host rock. The frozen nature of the wall rocks can obviate water-related problems."

Whilst these remain fundamental to successful mining businesses, other elements of sustainability are assuming increasing importance. As a large energy user, greenhouse and energy management is becoming an important part of Thiess? business. Thiess is a signatory to Australian government initiatives such as Greenhouse Challenge Plus, and is integrating energy management into its operations and business improvement programs, in many cases to the benefit also of the client. This paper will highlight the benefits that an organisation such as Thiess can bring to a mine owner. Thiess? approach to business improvement and cost reduction, sustainability and energy management, as well as the relationship between these will also be considered. Increasingly, overall mining performance is dependent on the alignment of formally disparate elements.

This paper discusses and compares methods of statistical analysis of the information relating to the evaluation of an asbestos deposit. From a study of 10-ft. lengths of drill core, the separate effects of visual evaluation errors were determined, as well as the deviations between evaluators and the deviations produced by a slight displacement in the center lines of the check drill holes. The importance of careful statistical analysis of such information is stressed.

"The analysis of meso- and micro-scale textural attributes has been undertaken on ore samples from the Ernest Henry iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG) deposit in NW QLD. Quantified textural data including grain size, shape and mineral association have been extracted from classified images of core with the aim to better predict potential mineral processing behaviours such as comminution, liberation and flotation. Data have been extracted from images of intact core at meso- and micro-scales using high resolution continuous images collected using automated core-logger technology, SEM-based and optical microscopy platforms.The results of this study will show examples of quantified size, shape and mineral association data from meso- and micro-scale classified images. Analysis of the data shows that there are domains of variable grain size and mineral association that can potentially be related to crushing and liberation behaviour. The trends that are observed at the drill-core (meso-) scale are consistent with those at the micro-scale. The results from the micro-scale analysis show that the domains defined at the core-scale have clearly different chalcopyrite sizes and shapes as well as variable bulk mineralogy.INTRODUCTIONInnovations in technology have allowed automated extraction of information about mineral shape, grain size and mineral association, i.e., texture, from meso- and micro-scale images of intact rocks. Start-up of a Hall-Heroult cell is a delicate task that can affect pot performance and pot life. Modem practices for high amperage cells involve preheating the lining before the molten electrolyte is poured in. Different preheating methods and heat-up schedules are used throughout the industry, and the optimum between a short start-up and damage minimization to the cell is elusive. Direct electrical coke-bed preheating is one of the most common techniques. This practice typically results in a non-uniform surface temperature distribution and can generate detrimental thermal gradients in the cathode blocks. Numerical modeling is an invaluable tool to study this complex problem and can help improve the preheating procedures. The modeling of the mechanical response of the lining is critical to detect risks of cathode block cracking or the development of gaps where liquids could leak into. Taking into account the baking of ramming paste, the quasi-brittle nature of carbon and the contact interfaces between different materials are examples of key elements to consider. A finite element slice model of a cell was built and simulations of different electrical preheating scenarios were performed using the inhouse code FESh++ to demonstrate what can be learned through thermo-chemomechanical modeling. The potential industrial application of the model is discussed.

The water cyclone washer has a number of advantages that makes it a desirable machine for the cleaning of fine-grained and friable materials such as 1,4 x 0" slack coals. In this paper results are presented of tests carried out on a shaly coal containing a high percentage of inter-grown materials from the Minto area, New Brunswick. The tests were con-ducted in the pilot plant of the Western Regional Laboratory in Edmonton. The test results show that the cleaning characteristics of this coal can be improved by lightly grinding the recirculating middlings fraction, which constitutes approximately 30 per cent (1.45-2.00 fraction) of the raw feed. • The cleaning of 1;4 x 0" fines by water cyclones compares favourably with other coal cleaning machines and has an added advantage of being extremely simple to operate, low in capital and operating cost, and high in capacity. "The Pogo project is located on the Goodpaster River, 38 miles north of Delta Junction in east central Alaska. Sumitomo Metal Mining and Teck Corporation are planning to develop a 2,500 ton per day underground mine and mill at Pogo. A preliminary resource of 5.5 million ounces of gold has been identified in two flat lying lenses. An underground adit has been developed to facilitate underground drilling of the deposit and to provide samples for bench and pilot scale metallurgical testwork.Flowsheet development included the evaluation of several processing options. The final flowsheet selected includes SAGhall mill grinding, gravity concentration with intensive cyanidation and direct electrowinning, sulfide flotation with ultrafine regrinding, and cyanide leaching and CIP gold recovery from the flotation concentrates. Flotation tailings will be filtered for placement in a dry stack storage facility or disposed of as paste backfill underground. All of the CIP tailings will be disposed of underground as paste backfill. A pilot plant was carried out to evaluate the proposed flowsheet described above and to confirm the gravity recovery predictions.Great care was taken in the development of the flowsheet and site layout concepts to mitigate the environmental impact of the proposed operation. An overview of the site water management concepts is presented and the impact of water issues on the process flowsheet is discussed."

"Mineralogical evaluation of ores containing platinum-group elements (PGE) is fraught with difficulties because of the low grades (often 1-3 g/t PGE), dispersal of PGE (usually as finegrained platinum-group minerals [PGM]), as well as occurring in solid solution in some base metal sulphides (BMS) such as pentlandite and pyrrhotite. Mineral processors not only need to know how the PGE are distributed, that is, their mineralogical distribution, but the grain sizes of the PGM, and especially the associated minerals.After obtaining a representative ground sample, common approaches include studying a large number of polished or polished thin sections, concentration of the PGM and sulphides by different gravity methods (e.g., heavy liquids, elutriation, micro-panning) and study of the produced concentrates. Unfortunately, these methods often do not produce concentrations that are sufficiently representative of a particular ore. The newly developed patented technology of hydroseparation (Rudashevsky et al., 2002) is especially effective at making concentrations of PGM over a wide range of concentrations (down to <300 ppb Pt+Pd+Au) and size fractions, including <45µm (down to a few micrometres in size), a size range not possible by other techniques. This water-based environmentally friendly laboratory technique provides a large amount of data from samples, which can range from 5 to 1000g, giving confidence to extrapolation of results to bench-scale and larger test work, especially when combined with quantitative image analysis to determine modal percent of major minerals and mineral liberation data, needed to predict the minimum (K80) and optimum (K40) grinds. INTRODUCTIONThe invention of the electron microprobe in the early 1960’s and scanning electron microscopes (SEM) with energy dispersive spectrometers (EDS) in the 1970’s presented mineralogists with powerful tools permitting them to obtain chemical and surface area data on minute amounts of minerals in situ, in a non-destructive manner. An area of process mineralogy that has very much benefited from this new technology was the characterization and understanding of PGM species, resulting in rapid growth of newly characterized species (Figure 1). Recognition of the first PGM may be ascribed to the Spanish explorer Ulloa in 1748, who described native platinum from South America. The second PGM (laurite, RuS2) was only recognised in 1866 by Wöhler in placer samples from Borneo (now Kalimantan) and the third (sperrylite, PtAs2) by Wells in 1889 from the Sudbury Ni-Cu sulphide deposits. The discovery of the important Pt-Pd deposits in the Bushveld Igneous Complex led to the characterization of the important Pt-Pd sulphides (cooperite, PtS2 in 1928 and braggite, (Pt,Pd)S2 in 1932). By the early 1960’s, only about 20 PGM were recognised, and many later proved to be poorly or incompletely characterized. Thus, the introduction of electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) led to a 50% increase of known PGM, as shown in a 1972 review on PGM (Cabri, 1972). At the time of the next review in 1981 (Cabri, 1981) the number of known PGM had grown to 75 and as of 2002, it had increased to 109 (Cabri, 2002). However, it is the author’s experience that less than about 25 PGM may be considered to be “common”, i.e., found in many different deposit types, as shown in Table 1, but usually only some of these occur in any one particular deposit."

There is accepted evidence that multistage fracturing of horizontal wells in shale reservoirs results in significant production variation from perforation cluster to perforation cluster. In fact, only a fraction of the perforation clusters seem to contribute to production in many shale gas and shale oil plays. In many cases, the orientation of the lateral section of these wells is determined by lease boundaries rather than principal stress directions, and these often do not coincide. When horizontal wells are misaligned from the far-field principal stress directions, the fracture must reorient from the near-wellbore principal stress directions, which are aligned with the wellbore, to the far-field principal stress directions. The primary objective of this study is to learn how various completion designs influence the near-wellbore fracture geometry when such a misalignment exists. A secondary objective is to understand the influence of rock fabric features, such as mineralized natural fractures, on this reorientation process. To understand these effects, eight laboratory hydraulic fracturing tests were conducted using a true triaxial vessel with 914 mm × 762 mm × 762 mm samples of Niobrara shale. Several different completion designs were studied, including the use of fracture initiation slots with several different orientations and the use of perforations selectively located to encourage a smooth transition from the near- to far-wellbore region. The tests were carefully scaled as accurately as possible to provide insight into the field near-wellbore phenomena. Pressure and fluid flux at the wellbore, deformation of the block, acoustic velocity, and induced acoustic emissions were acquired during the tests. Additionally, sized particles were also injected to gauge the fracture width away from the wellbore. After the test, the blocks were dismantled, and the fracture geometry was mapped in 3D. These measurements allow one to clearly differentiate the fracture initiation and the breakdown—meaning the peak pressure—to be clearly differentiated; the fracture was already well developed when the maximum pressure was reached. The study reveals non-negligible tortuosity and aperture restriction in the near-wellbore region. In the field, this would translate to high treating pressures, uneven proppant distribution, and possibly near-wellbore screenouts. The test results show that, of the configurations tested, the best approach is to use deep slots that are aligned with the far-field principal stress directions. The oriented perforation design did not achieve the simple, smooth transition that was hoped for, and instead produced multiple competing near-wellbore fractures and considerable tortuosity. The study also demonstrated that the presence of planes of weakness, such as mineralized natural fractures, near the slot tip can result in poor near-wellbore fracture geometries, even for the best completion configuration. We conclude from these tests that the misalignment of the well with a principal stress direction creates near-wellbore complexity that, in turn, creates uncertainty in proppant distribution and, therefore, production; proppant might avoid up to a half of the created fracture. Regardless of the wellbore orientation, this uncertainty is further increased by the presence of mineralized features in the rock fabric that can strongly alter or stop the growth of the hydraulic fracture. Preventing those effects by changing the completion alone proves difficult, and new strategies are required to ensure a reliable stimulation of shales.

"Most underground mines require heating or cooling systems to meet health and safety standards in the working areas. In regions where daily or seasonal fluctuations of environmental conditions exist, these systems tend to be over-sized and operate at low average load factors, which increase both investment and operating costs. One possible approach to reduce the temperature variations of the fresh air supplied to the mine, and so reducing the investment in large heating or cooling systems, is to use rock as a thermal regenerator or thermal storage system. Packed rock beds act as thermal inertial units, damping the atmospheric temperature oscillations to provide a more constant fresh air temperature. However, although regenerators exist in some mines, and packed bed rocks have been studied in detail in solar thermal power applications, there is a lack of tools to design new and sufficiently large storage systems of this kind. This work fills the existing gap by presenting a methodology to design and evaluate the impact on the ventilation systems of these regenerators. The method is validated using existing rock bed systems found in the literature and illustrates possible designs for small and large size regenerators in both hot and cold climates.1 INTRODUCTION “ It is quite amazing how often answers to extremely complicated problems can be obtained in this way, by using greatly simplified models of the real situation for the purpose of calculation.” Whiller, A. in private communication to J. Motivation Most underground mines located in regions with extreme climatic conditions require the thermal pre-treatment of the fresh ventilation airflows, whether for heating or cooling. Heating commonly is needed in sites with sub-zero temperatures and is usually effected by direct or indirect burning of natural gas or propane. Alternatively, cooling is required in areas with hot temperatures, or in mines with high underground thermal loads where the fresh air at ambient temperature cannot provide enough refrigeration. Thus, when the ambient air conditions cannot provide by itself enough thermal power to ensure safe underground working conditions, a heating or cooling plant is required, which involves a considerable equipment and operation cost."

"Sulphuric acid treated with hydrogen peroxide to destroy organic contaminants could conceivably show increased corrosivity toward carbon steel shipping and storage vessels, caused by the persistence of a peroxide residual. This paper describes work performed to determine the effect of 0-200ppm hydrogen peroxide on the corrosion of carbon steel by 93% and 98% sulphuric acid at room temperature (23ºC) and 50ºC.Steel electrodes were exposed to acid containing several peroxide levels (0. 45, iOO and 200 ppm) for up to two weeks. Specimens were removed at intervals and weight loss, open circuit potential, depth of metal loss and residual peroxide concentration recorded.Hydrogen peroxide decomposes considerably over two weeks in iron-contaminated sulphuric acid. initial peroxide concentrations > l00 ppm suppress corrosion, but the effect is lost when concentration decays below about 60 ppm. Sustained peroxide levels in the range below 60 ppm may increase corrosion rates. These phenomena are interpreted by analogy with anodic passivation."

"THE REVIVAL of the Mayo mining camp, with particular reference to the activities of United Keno Hill Mines, Limited, has been one •of the more spectacular and also one of the most important of the post-war developments in the Canadian mining field. The geological location of the camp, coupled with other natural disadvantages, have in the past limited the mining area to small-scale, highgrading operations, but the post-war improvement in metal prices has now broadened the possibilities and has led to the considerable success achieved by United Keno Hill Mines, Limited, and the present boom-type development by a whole host of newcomers to the field.LocationYukon which has an area of 207,000 square miles, is showing ever increasing possibilities as a mineral source of great value and more and more attention is being focussed on the Territory. The accompanying generalized map (Figure 1) shows the main transportation routes and mining districts.The Mayo Mining District comprises roughly the eastern two thirds of Yukon Territory lying north of McMillan river and south of the Peel. The district was one of the first in the Territory in which placer gold was discovered, but the occurrences proved of minor importance. Other minerals reported include ores of tungsten, tin, antimony, and several other metals, but of primary importance have been the ores containing silver-lead-zinc-cadmium now being developed and mined in the Keno area. Similar ores have been found over a very considerable area, extending some 50 miles north, 15 miles east, 30 miles west, and 10 miles south of the townsite of Keno Hills, Keno City, a total area of 2,700 square miles."

This paper has been confined to the consideration of the working of thick seams, from six feet to sixteen feet, which are pitching at about thirty degrees to the horizontal. The discussion has been limited to these set conditions because they are the ones of commonest occurrence in the Southern Alberta bituminous coal district, because, from the point of view of safety, thin seams are more easily worked, and because a discussion of all the possible combinations of thick and thin seams pitching at angles varying from zero to ninety degrees with the horizontal would involve a task impossible in the time available. It has been assumed that the mine makes gas freely and that the coal is friable and tends to make inflammable dust which is highly explosive. Since the problem requires the taking into account means of maintaining a high proportion of lump coal, it is further assumed that lump coal commands a price considerably higher than the price which can be obtained for run-of-mine or for slack coal. Figure 1, tabulating the various factors which must be considered and their relation to each other, indicates diagrammatically the complexity of the problem. Any method of working becomes divided into two distinct components, the active workings of the mine and the old abandoned workings. While these are in a measure distinct, they are nevertheless inter-related, as shown in the diagram.

"The Williams Gold Mine is located in the Hemlo camp of Northwestern Ontario and is one of Canada’s largest gold producers with annual gold production of 400,000 ounces. The operation is owned and operated as a 50:50 joint venture between Teck Cominco Limited and Barrick Gold Corporation.In July 2002, the decision was made to introduce paste backfill produced from mill tailings as the primary backfilling method in the mine and to decommission the existing cemented rock fill system. This required a fast track design to be completed for both a surface paste backfill plant and an underground paste distribution system followed by an intensive construction phase through the fall and winter of 2002/2003. The paste system was commissioned on schedule in late April 2003 and was in full production within 4 weeks of the initial start up. Overall, the project duration was only 42 weeks from initial project release to commissioning and it was completed $2 million under the budget of $14 million.This paper presents an overview of the lab testwork and process flowsheet design, process control methodology and describes the construction and commissioning phases of the project. Preliminary paste plant performance and operating cost data is also presented.IntroductionThe Williams Gold Mine is located in Northwestern Ontario adjacent to the Trans Canada Highway in the Hemlo Gold Camp as shown in figure 1. The mine currently produces approximately 400,000 ounces of gold annually and is owned and operated as a 50:50 joint venture between Teck Cominco and Barrick.The deposit was discovered as part of the Hemlo gold discovery in 1981 which led to the development of three mining operations within a 2 kilometre radius. The neighboring operations are the Golden Giant Mine, currently owned and operated by Newmont Gold, and the David Bell Mine, currently owned and operated by the same joint venture which is running Williams. David Bell ore is blended and milled in the Williams concentrator."
