This paper addresses issues associated with ore pass degradation caused by material impact. A series of numerical experiments, using the particle flow code, were undertaken to investigate the influence of various finger raise configuration. This has allowed the identification of favorable configurations. The results of this analysis, when coupled with field observations, can contribute to the design of ore pass systems that can prolong the useful operating life of ore pass systems.

With an increase of mining depth, a series of mining-induced hazards such as rockburst, coal and gas outburst, roof collapse, and water burst are getting more serious and more frequent. The intrinsic mechanism responsible for the occurrence of mining-induced hazards is the damage and unstable failure of rockmass or coal seam. The most distinct difference between deep and shallow levels is the so-called three ‘high’ (H3) conditions, i.e. high geo-stress, high fluid pressure and high geo-temperature. Therefore, the response of rock or coal to the deep mining operation is a phenomenon involving thermal (T), hydraulic (H), and mechanical (M) processes. Most importantly, mining excavation may vary the rock stress condition greatly, which may be a key factor to trigger the mining-induced hazards such as rockburst. In this regard, it is of great significance to clarify the damage and failure mechanism of rock and coal under coupled THM conditions, in order to clarify the rock failure mechanism responsible for the occurrence of mining-induced hazards. Thereafter, the mining-induced hazards cannot be predicted with confidence by considering each process independently. Of course, the requirement to include coupling of these processes depends on the specifics of the mining-induced hazards under consideration. For example, the water inrush is considered as a coupled hydro-mechanical (HM) process, in which the unstable failure of rockmass occurs under the combined contribution of geo-stress and water pressure. As for the coal mining at depth, in addition to high geo-stress and gas pressure in coal seam, the high geo-thermal condition that may greatly change the adsorption / desorption of gas and gas flow should be taken into account. Firstly, a general-purpose mathematical model for rock damage and failure process under coupled THM conditions is formulated based on damage mechanics principle, and it is solved by finite element method (FEM). In this model, the deformation and damage of rock, fluid flow and thermal transfer in rock would interact with each other, one process affects and initiation and progress of another. Then, the model is used to predict the mining-induced water outburst, where it is simulated as coupled hydro-mechanical (HM) problems. Based on the numerical simulation, the dimension of water-proof pillar is designed. Finally, the gas drainage from deep coal seam is numerically evaluated, where the coupled coal-gas interaction considering the effect of gas adsorption/desorption, gas flow in coal seam and geo-stress and geotemperature, is comprehensively taken into account. The proposed model could be used for clarifying the mechanism of mining-induced hazards in deep-level mining.

"2.1. General Considerations and Properties2.1.1. IntroductionOur present knowledge of the platinum-group elements (POE) is extensive, the reason being two-fold. The elements have many uses and, moreover, they exhibit extremely varied chemical behaviour, depending on their state of oxidation and chemical environment. The present chapter reviews a selected body of material which is of particular relevance to mineralogy and geochemistry.Comprehensive treatises on the POE include those by Mellor (1956-1957), Gmelin (1938-1957) and Pascal (1958). The inorganic chemistry, particularly coordination chemistry, has been dealt with in works by Griffith (1967), Hartley (1973) and Livingstone (1975), and the analytical chemistry by Walsh and Hausman (1963), Beamish (1966) and Beamish and Van Loon (1972, 1977). Darling (1973) and Savitsky (1978) have reviewed the metallurgical properties and applications of the metals. Goldberg and Helper (1968) have reviewed the thermochemistry and oxidation potentials of POE systems, and Wagman et at. (1969) have also provided selected values of their thermodynamic properties. The geochemistry of the POE has been reviewed by Yushko-Zakharova et at. (1967), Cousins (1973), Cabri (1974), and Naldrett and Duke (1980).Platinum was used briefly as a coinage metal in ImperialRussia. Otherwise, the principal early use for platinum and its alloys was in the fabrication of chemically resistant apparatus. Subsequently, a large part of platinum production was utilized for catalysts in the sulphuric acid and ammonia industries. Platinum has been replaced by vanadium pentoxide in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, but, in recent times, catalytic upgrading of petroleum and emission control systems for automobiles have opened further huge markets for the metal. All of the POE find uses either as reagents or catalysts in the synthesis of organic compounds, e.g., in the Wacker process, which uses palladium chloride to catalyze the production of acetaldehyde from ethylene. There are, of course, a large number of specialized uses for the elements, particularly in alloys, temperature measurement devices, cancer therapy and so on."

"INTRODUCTIONA beneficiation plant to upgrade earthy iron ores is being installed by the Iron Ore Company of Canada in Sept-Iles, Quebec.The crude ore for the plant will come from the Knob Lake area, located in Northern Quebec, where mining has been in progress since 1954.Some 170 million tons of ""direct 11 ores have been mined and shipped in the past eighteen years, with an overall silica content of 7 to 8 percent. No beneficiation - except the reduction of the top size to about 2 inches - took place during this period, but extensive research work has been carried out, in order to find a feasible process.Since “washing"", gravity separation, roasting and magnetic separation experiments did not indicate positive enough results, flotation was tried and found to be feasible.The beneficiation complex being installed will consist of grinding, flotation, dewatering - i.e.: thickening, filtering and drying - balling feed preparation, and agglomeration - i.e.: balling and induration.This process will result in a product superior to the ""direct shipping"" ores and will also expand the ore reserves by allowing material with a higher silica content to be utilized.THE OREThe Knob Lake ores are grouped by mineralogical composition and by grade.BLUE ORES, representing roughly two thirds of the reserves, carry their iron content mostly in the form of massive, blue hematite and martite.YELLOW ORES, about one sixth of the reserves, have predominantly hydrated iron oxides as the iron bearing minerals.RED ORES, the other sixth of the reserves, carry the iron mostly in the form of red hematite.The gangue in all ores is mainly quartz, but aluminum oxides and hydroxides are also present, particularly in the red ores."

The nature and distribution of radiation-induced defects (RIDs) in quartz from the Maw Zone, a yttrium- and rare-earth-element-enriched sandstone breccia complex exhibiting intense hydrothermal alteration, have been investigated by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. EPR spectra show that detrital quartz in sandstone, from five diamond drill holes intersecting the Maw Zone and one above the crest of the so-called Quartzite Ridge, contain only background-level RIDs, indicating that Ubearing fluids were absent in this area. However, close to the sandstone-basement unconformity, in hole WR-194 immediately west of the Quartzite Ridge, the concentration of RIDs in detrital quartz is significantly above background but at least an order of magnitude lower than those at the Key Lake and McArthur River deposits. Widespread drusy quartz at the Maw Zone, which signifies intense hydrothermal alteration, is associated with hematite-, sulfide- and carbonate-bearing mineral assemblages, which exhibit complex crosscutting relationships. EPR spectra of drusy quartz in all three types of mineral assemblages are low in RIDs as well, supporting the EPR evidence that fluids at the Maw Zone did not carry significant U. These EPR results suggest that, in spite of intense hydrothermal alteration and favorable structural geology, the Maw Zone is unlikely to host any significant U mineralization. Moreover, this study shows that the EPR technique is potentially a useful exploration tool, capable of determining whether individual alteration zones in the Athabasca Basin were associated with U-bearing fluids or not.

In New Brunswick, during the 1970's, rocks of the Lower Carboniferous Windsor Group in the Moncton Basin of the Fundy Epieugeosyncline have been the target of intense exploration and drilling programs. Sylvinite ore was discovered in three structural basins of the Moncton Basin near Sussex through a drilling program sponsored jointly by the Federal Department of Regional Economic Expansion and the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources. In 1973, exploration and development rights to the western end of the Moncton Basin were awarded to the Potash Company of America. One high-grade sylvinite unit, varying between 15 and 70feet in true thickness, with a strike length in excess of 5 miles, is located near the stratigraphic top of the assymetric, semi-diapiric, locally overturned anticline. Late in 1975, exploration and development rights to the Marchbank Syncline were awarded to International Minerals and Chemical Corporation (Canada) Limited. To date, a stratigraphic evaporite sequence, forming the semi-diapiric core of the syncline, has been shown to contain one major high-grade sylvinite unit averaging 70 feet in true thickness over a strike length in excess of 2 miles. Both properties appear to have potential considerably in excess of that revealed by the exploratory drilling, and both, because of numerous mineralogical, structural and stratigraphic similarities, are thought to be depositionally contemporaneous. Both potash deposits lie within 50 miles of the Saint John all-weather deepwater port, thus affording easy access to eastern and mid-western U.S. markets. Further opportunities for potash exploration in New Brunswick are considered excellent, as there are large untested areas with favourable geology and known potassium water anomalies and negative gravity anomalies occurring in the Moncton and Cumberland basins, and in the Central Basin of New Brunswick.

Context ? Community engagement has become an increasingly significant and challenging part of mineral exploration and mine development; indeed, opposition from communities proximate to a proposed mine site has been known to derail technologically- and financially-sound projects. ? These cases suggest that mining firms need to better understand how to engage constructively with local communities in the pursuit of their claims. ? While a range of publications exist promoting various community engagement strategies, these recommendations, when viewed as a whole, are disjointed and largely untested in real development contexts. Aims of Presentation 1. Synthesize industry, NGO, government and academic publications focused on community engagement best practice in order to highlight those practices that are most commonly recommended. 2. Review the (Canadian) mining industry?s experience with some of these strategies based on existing case material in order to identify the extent to which commonly prescribed strategies are used and validated in practice.

Polypropylene (PP) and its composites have an increasing use in automobile and domestic industries. Since the published results on strain rate effect on yield behavior do not match, and there is a high attention paid for effect of nanometeric fillers on deformation behavior of composites, in this research the strain rate effect on yield behavior of PP and the effect of nanometeric fillers on deformation behavior of PP have been studied. Microscopic observations and tensile tests in different strain rates on neat PP samples and on samples filled with 5, 10 and 15 %wt have been used. A dramatic change in behavior for the modulus and post-yield slope curves when the strain rate is between 0.0433-0.05 s-1 has been observed. Microscopic observations on PP indicate a change in deformation mechanism from shear yield to crazing at the same strain rate that the change in behavior of curves occurs. It has been observed that in PP nanocomposites with higher amount of calcium carbonate, fracture in early stages of deformation occurs in lower strain rates. In other words for a fixed stain rate there is a critical filler percentage such that if the filler percentage is higher then early-stage fracture will occur. Similarly for a fixed filler percentage there is a critical strain rate and in higher strain rates early fracture will occur. The critical stain rate will decrease as the filler percentage increases and vice versa.

"Zn-Pb sulfide mineralization at Abbeytown mine and Twigspark quarry comprise the only known car¬bonate-hosted base metal sulfide deposits in the Sligo syncline, northwest Ireland. Limestone sedimentation occurred uniformly throughout the region during the Early Carboniferous (Mississippian) as observed by field relationships and lithofacies; however, petrographic and stable isotope evidence indicate that host-rock dolomitization occurred under different conditions at localities to the west and east of the Ox Mountains inlier, suggesting significant uplift and geologic isolation of these areas prior to dolomitization. Localized fluid flow systems are thought to be responsible for sulfide mineralization and associated epigenetic carbonate cements. West of the Ox Mountains inlier at Abbeytown, evidence of three geochemically distinct fluids are observed: (1) a lower-temperature, lower-salinity fluid (70°-130-°C, 4-9 wt.% equiv. NaCl); (2) a lower-temperature, higher-salinity fluid (70°-140°C, 15-24 wt.% equiv. NaCl); and (3) a higher-temperature, moderate-salinity fluid (165°-220°C, 8-14 wt.% equiv. NaCl). Similar fluid types were observed at the Twigspark deposit. The source of the higher-salinity fluid is likely seawater evaporated to near the point of halite precipitation. The higher-temperature fluid is thought to have been derived from deep circulation of basinal brines. It is speculated that mixing of the higher-salinity fluid with the high-temperature fluid was vital for ore formation at Abbeytown because fluid inclusions in sphalerite have homogenization temperatures and salinity values that fall along a mixing trajectory of these end member fluids. Also, areas where the high-salinity end member fluid is absent are barren of sulfides. Less complex fluid systems are indicated for sites east of the Ox Mountains inlier where no sulfide mineralization was observed. Data from base metal sulfide prospects in northwest Ireland indicate no connection with the regionally extensive flow system thought to be responsible for Zn-Pb deposits throughout the Irish Midlands.Les minéralisations en sulfures de Zn-Pb de la mine Abbeytown et de la carrière Twigspark sont les seules gîtes de métaux usuels à encaissant carbonaté connus dans le synclinal de Sligo, au nord-ouest de l’Irlande. Ces carbonates se sont déposés d’une manière uniforme dans la région au Carbonifère inférieur (Mississippien) tel que l’indiquent les relations de terrain et les lithofaçiès; les données pétrographiques et d’isotopes stables indiquent toutefois que la dolomitisation de l’encaissant s’est faite sous des conditions différentes aux localités situées à l’ouest ou à l’est de la boutonnière des Ox Mountains, ce qui suggère un soulèvement et une isolation géologique significative de ces secteurs avant la dolomitisation. L’action de systèmes de circulation locaux sont considérés être à l’origine de la minéralisation sulfurée et des ciments carbonatés épigénétiques qui leur sont associés. "Shales are highly anisotropic in their mechanical behavior. The strength ( ??1) of anisotropic shales depends not only on the magnitude of the other two principal stresses ( ??2, ??3), but also on the bedding plane orientations (?) relative to the principal stresses. In this study, the role of the intermediate stress ( ??2) on the strength of shale is evaluated using new data from triaxial compression and extension tests. To understand the failure behavior of shales, we have carried out triaxial compression tests ( ??1 > ??2 = ??3) on two organic rich mudstones, at different confining stresses and loading angles. We first fit the triaxial compression data with Jaeger’s plane-of-weakness model, and find that the model is able to represent the strength behavior of anisotropic shales reasonably well. We then carried out five triaxial extension tests ( ??1 = ??2 > ??3) for a high strength-anisotropy shale, and two extension tests for a low strength-anisotropy shale. Results from the compression and extension tests for failure along the weak plane shows that the role of ??2 is not significant for weak plane failure. However, for the low strength-anisotropy shale, the failure strength of the intact rock (i.e., at ??= 0o and 90o) for compression and extension tests were significantly different. This indicates that for intact rock failure, the role of ??2 is important and cannot be ignored.INTRODUCTIONFor many years, various researchers have studied the roles of ??2 for failure of isotropic rocks. (Mogi, 1967 and 2007; Colmenares and Zoback, 2002; Al-Ajmi and Zimmerman, 2005 and 2006; Haimson, 2009; Ma and Haimson, 2012). The findings from these studies show that the effect of ??2 on the strength of isotropic rocks is generally significant, and cannot be ignored.Since the role of ??2 in the failure of isotropic rocks was recognized, other researchers attempted to extend some of these isotropic failure criteria to anisotropic rocks, but with limited success (e.g., Tiwari & Rao, 2007; Singh et al., 1998; Zhang and Zhu, 2007; Pei, 2008). Smith and Cheatham (1980), on the other hand, conducted true-triaxial experiments on the Green River Shale and used a J2-I1 type relationship to predict the strength behavior, but without considering the effect of the three-dimensional orientation of the weak plane on strength. Therefore, unlike for the case of isotropic rocks, additional studies need to be done to determine the role of 2 on the failure of anisotropic rocks."

"A test surface Pulse EM(PEM) survey over a plunging massive sulphide lens, located in the Snow Lake area of Manitoba, has shown that it is possible to detect the body to a depth of 300 metres. Another surface survey in the Athabasca basin of Saskatchewan, clearly outlined a large, basement graphitic zone below 450 metres of sandstone cover. Deep detection of these conductive bodies was achieved by energizing large volumes of ground with a strong transmitted EM field. Such large fields also energize all other conductors present in the exploration area. Both of the above survey results indicate that more than one conductor is present. In such cases, detailed field coverage is required for accurate interpretation, and interpretational procedures that assume simple geometrical shapes should be applied with caution. In all cases geological and geophysical information should be coordinated in detail. The first test drill hole still has a high risk of missing the deep conductive body and two or three holes should be budgeted per target.Borehole Pulse EM surveys are now routinely used to help zero in on deep conductive targets. They are also proving effective in development drilling programs by outlining the edges of conductive bodies. The results of surveys from northern Quebec illustrate how they may provide more accurate shape and tonnage estimates."

"The data acquisition from industrial plants is a fundamental step for process modelling in process optimization, process analysis and automatic control.The introduction, some years ago, of modern distributed control and data acquisition systems in concentrators imposes a new approach in designing experimental schemes for data acquisition campaigns and new criteria for the treatment of the obtained discrete information.This paper presents the methodology applied to sample a zinc flotation circuit at Les Mines Selbaie, Joutel, PQ. Values of 85 process variables were obtained form the Distributed Control and Data Acquisition System (Bailey Network 90) and transferred to the DOS environment. Another 11 variables (flowrates and valve positions) were directly sampled using an IBM-PC compatible computer equipped with a data acquisition card and a signal processing circuit.All variables, under the vector form, were processed in the PC-MATLAB environment to either filter or eliminate the non-linear disturbances and noises, producing useful data for model development. The filtering algorithms are also presented.INTRODUCTIONProcess control does not need to be justified. Whether manual or automatic, any processing plant requires some form of control to accomplish its main objectives: a good quality product and a target throughput. Process control of mineral processing plants has steadily evolved from manual control, where the operator skills and/or experience play an important role, to some level of automatic control, usually considered better, as less human subjectivity is involved, at least when actions have to be taken.The design of these control systems requires the knowledge of the dynamics of the process it is deemed to control. Process modelling is therefore an essential step in the assessment and the design of a control strategy. The choice of model will depend on the available resources and manpower."

Thickening of mine tailings is a relatively new concept for their sustainable management. Removal of water from the tailings to form a paste instead of slurry disposal decreases environmental and geotechnical concerns. As the use of these pastes is relatively new, their behaviour requires investigations such as liquefaction and seismic stability, freeze-thaw behaviour, consolidation and leachate characterization. Slurry density, ore type, particle size distribution, specific gravity and environmental conditions can all influence paste characteristics. In this paper, the effect of the above-mentioned parameters is examined. New developments in water removal, and additives (such as flocculating agents, cements, organics, fertilizers, etc) leading to low moisture content tailings are reviewed, and the potential for thickening to enable sustainable management of mine tailings is discussed with respect to storage volume requirement, use of virgin land, consolidation of the tailings, land use after decommissioning.

"Highland Valley Copper is a conventional truck-shovel mining and flotation concentrator operation located 75 km southwest of Kamloops, British Columbia (Fig. 1).The ore is situated within a porphyry copper deposit and is mined at a rate of 135,000 mt/day from two separate open pits. The nearby mill produces concentrates containing 375 million pounds of copper and 5 million pounds of molybdenum metal yearly. In the Valley pit, head grades are roughly 0.40% Cu at a 0.23% Cu equivalent cut-off. The Valley pit strip ratio currently sits at 0.55:1 with waste quantities made up of separate rock and unconsolidated overburden units. From the mill, concentrates are trucked to nearby Ashcroft and then hauled by rail to ocean port facilities in Vancouver. The mine employs 950 people and is planned to operate until 2009. The operation is a partnership between Teck Cominco (63.9%), BHP Billiton (33.6%), and others (2.5%). Management is shared by the two principal owners and directed by a management committee."

"The role of mixed collectors in enhancing the metallurgical performance of sulphide flotation processes was reviewed in 2008, and later published as an integrated theory by Lotter and Bradshaw, 2009. The theory proposed that xanthates, dithiophosphates and dithiocarbamates could be synergistically combined in an optimal formula to deliver improved grade and recovery. The approach uses a five-step structure, viz.1. A mineralogical study of the ore to be treated, identifying and quantifying the economic minerals (with hosting and association) and gangue species present.2. Selection of candidate collectors from this mineralogical information and from the known pulp conditions of that operation (e.g. Eh, pH).3. Design and execution of a factorial experiment to estimate and test the main effects and interactions, and to model the response surface for an optimum formulation [Box et al., 1978].4. Use of a High-Confidence Flotation Test platform in the factorial to reduce overall errors and allow for clearer observations [Lotter, 1995; Lotter and Fragomeni, 2010].5. Statistical design of a plant scale trial to measure and validate the gains [Napier-Munn, 1995; Lotter et al., 2009]. Eland Platinum, which was commissioned in November 2007, appointed a team to apply this theory to formulate an optimized mixed collector suite for use in the operation. The West Pit ore (UG2 - Normal ore) was sampled at site and brought to Xstrata Process Support, Sudbury, Canada, for mineralogical and metallurgical testing in 2008. Microprobe and QEMSCAN measurement characterized the type, grain size and textural association of the discrete Platinum Group Minerals (PGM) present. From the mineralogical data, it was clear that a mixture of dithiocarbamate and two xanthates would be a likely reagent suite selection. A factorially designed set of High-Confidence Flotation Tests studying these was performed, concluding that an optimal suite using certain amounts of these collectors was a viable formulation that would advance the grade and recovery performance at Eland above the standard PIBX by approximately 2.13% 4E PGE. The plant trial, which used a form of the replicated block design after Napier-Munn, 1995, and Lotter et al., 2009, exceeded this estimate with an overall PGE recovery gain of 2.48% (absolute basis) and a concentrate grade gain of 26.4 g/t PGE (absolute basis), as well as reducing chrome in concentrate from 2.04 to 1.62% (absolute basis). These gains proved to be statistically significant using the analysis of variance method, and have validated the theory."

"THE CONCEPT of energy as a commodity, while not entirely new, is not as widespread as the importance of the idea to this modern world would lead one to expect. The growth in the supply and use of energy over the past years has been tremendous, but our very closeness and familiarity have somewhat distorted the viewpoint, particularly of the younger generation. To many of us who remember the wonderful satisfaction of our first responsibility for directing two horsepower hitched to a farm cart or hay wagon, there still arises a feeling of some awe at the casual flick of the switch with which our sons and daughters summon to their convenience the service of some one hundred or more horsepower.Energy is the vital component of our existence and, no matter what contempt our day-to-day familiarity may •breed, it is wise to .pause from time to time and consider our national energy standing. "Water in mining is the commodity that has driven the mining industry for decades. Often used frivolously, modern economic and social pressures are forcing change to use less water and to improve the quality of water and effluents. Used in many processes, water is ultimately consumed in tailings disposal and technologies which can increase the recovery of water are constantly being developed. Filtration and thickening are often seen as competing technologies for water recovery however new cases are developing that show significant advantages can be achieved by combining the two technologies to develop the most effective solution. Supported by case studies this paper investigates the merits of each of the technologies and which strategies of combining the two produce the best outcomes.INTRODUCTIONMineral processing applications generally require water for the processing of ores, whether utilising physical or chemical methods. Water is first added in the milling stage and additional water added as required throughout the circuit. Water losses from the circuit are principally associated with the tailings stream. Optimised water recovery is necessary both because it is a scarce commodity and to minimise the environmental impact.Water recovery is usually accomplished through a sedimentation or filtration processes. Water can be removed from the tailings impoundment by evaporation but this does not improve the mine’s water consumption. The water recovery methodology also determines the water quality; increasing water recovery concentrates solutes in the process water and may create recirculating loads of fine solids."

"Uranium mining and processing typically requires large quantities of high-grade reactive quicklime for the neutralization and clean-up of contaminated mine water and mill process waste streams. Currently the Saskatchewan uranium industry’s lime requirements are being supplied from deposits located in Manitoba and Alberta, resulting in transportation costs, which equal or exceed the market value of the product. During the summer of 2001, the northern village of Pinehouse located 220 kilometers south of the Key Lake uranium mill, staked two previously discovered limestone deposits. The relatively shallow deposits, known as Missi Island and Sleeping Giant are located in close proximity to one another, approximately 35 km south of Pinehouse adjacent to highway 914. This paper describes the results of a scoping study carried out by AMEC for the development of the two deposits based on a seasonal limestone mine and a continuous 40,000 to 60,000 tpy wood fired calcining plant designed to supply all of the quicklime needs of the Saskatchewan based uranium industry. Also described are the results of calcining and customer acceptance testwork on samples of lime prepared from recent Pinehouse limestone drill core. The potential benefits of the project include a significant new source of revenue for the community of Pinehouse, lower lime costs for the Saskatchewan uranium industry and employment for northerners in the mining, processing and wood harvesting operations.IntroductionInterest in the Pinehouse/Massinahigan River area for limestone was precipitated by the results of a 1977 industrial minerals drill hole program by the Saskatchewan Department of Mineral Resources. These results led to the acquisition of land in the area by Missi Island Mines Ltd who carried out extensive exploration during the period 1978-1982. They discovered a deposit on the southwest side of the Massinihigan River thought to contain approximately seven million tonnes of limestone with an average grade of 94.5% CaCO3. Missi Island carried out preliminary feasibility studies and prepared an Environmental Overview Statement. However, in spite of positive recommendations, the project was dropped in the mid 1980’s."

"This paper studies the progress made by hydraulic shovel manufacturers over the last few years, particularly in the areas of productivity increase and operating cost reductions.Five years ago, it was widely considered that the unit production cost for a hydraulic shovel in a mining application was double that of a cable shovel in the same application. The hydraulic machine manufacturers have taken up this challenge, and modern improvements in design, coupled with changes in maintenance techniques, have narrowed the gap to the point where it is valid to ask the question ""will the cable shovel exist in ten years' time?"".Historical BackgroundThe history of the cable shovel goes back to the early 19th century and the industrial revolution. Early machines were steam-powered and ran on rails.The ""power shovel"" and the ""dragline"" were the only mechanical means of mass excavation until the early 1950s. Rail-mounted units gave way to crawlers, which increased flexibility considerably. Some shovels were redesigned as backhoes, and some became extremely large when designed as stripping shovels primarily used in North American coal mines.In the early 1950s growth in hydraulic technology spawned the introduction of the hydraulic excavator, which soon began to replace the smaller cable shovels and backhoes used in the construction industry. They were completely self-contained with either a gasoline or diesel engine and, being much lighter, were more readily transportable.As the excavators grew in size from its early models of 0.5 m3 or less, many of the cable shovel models were discontinued. This was not surprising for several reasons, but the most obvious is that both were often made by the same manufacturer."
