The variability of gold mineralization in the Warrego Gold Pod is described by classical statistical techniques using sample distrib- utions and analysis of variance; and by the use of geostatistical variogram analysis to define the spatial variability and anisotropy of the mineralization. Comparison is made between declared mine production from the Nineteen Stope and a series of ore reserve estimates derived by manual, numerical and disjunctive kriging methods.

This paper reviews the instrumentation and monitoring of blasthole drills and electric mining shovels at a surface coal mine in western Canada. The drill monitoring component involved the development and implementation of microprocessor-based hardware on Bucyrus-Erie 45R and 60R drills. Over a two year period 3800 metres of blasthole drilling were monitored The drill data was subsequently correlated with core and geophysical logs towards identifying unique and reproducible ranges of performance parameter data for the different rock types penetrated. Using this technique, the geology of the study area benches was characterized in detail. Once these same benches had been blasted, the performance of a P&H 2800XP shovel was monitored as it worked through the blasted ground. In this regard, the influence of different digging conditions on shovel performance were identified in a range of blast and geological environments within the study area. The precise nature of these environments was confirmed by a correlation with the interpreted drill monitored data and muckpile size distributions obtained from a digital photo-analysis study. The excavation of 500 000 bcm of waste was thus monitored and a digging index derived which reflected variations in muckpile diggability. The paper concludes by proposing an integrated monitoring approach which, as a first step, uses interpreted drill data for explosive loading. This capability would permit greater accuracy in explosives loading ie. charge placement within higher strength lithologies, while avoiding weaker units. The performance of an instrumented shovel would then be monitored as it works through the resulting muckpile. Interpretation of the shovel performance data would determine the overall quality of the blast in terms of a digging index (DI), providing an indication of the relative digging effort and the effectiveness of the blast design.

This paper outlines mining practice in the South Alligator valley between 1954 and 1964. The valley is situated in the Northern Territory 130 miles south east of Darwin and trends north west. The centrally located El Sherana camp is 219 miles by road from Darwin via Pine Creek on the Stuart Highway. 64 miles of gravelled road with low level bridges and culverts which were completed in 1959, connect Pine Creek with El Sherana. This road is often impassable during severe wet season conditions. Earliest recorded production was during the years 1956-57 from the El Sherana and Palette miles, by shallow open cut and cut and fill stoping from small shafts. 4600 tons of high grade ore was processed by hand sorting of massive pitchblende followed by gravity concentra- tion. At the same time 627 tons of ore was won from a small open cut at Sliesbeck 35 miles SE of El Sherana. The second and most important phase of production was to fill two small contracts with the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (U.K.A.E.A.) totalling 700 tons of U 08. About 144,000 tons of ore was mined from widely separated smal' orebodies and mining practice varied from small open cuts to gloryholes, open stoping and cut and fill stoping. In some orebodies a combination of several methods was employed to complete production. Final deliveries were made to the U.K.A.E.A. In 1964.

The statistical nature of the variability in detonation times of pyrotechnic delays is discussed, and how to evaluate the probability of required detonation intervals is shown. Some methods (analytical and stochastic) are given for designing blasts to ensure that any adverse effects on the variability in the delays is taken into account and minimised. Using computer models of blasts, detonation simulations can be used to check the initiation sequence for the probability of sequence reversals, indicating areas of high blast damage potential. Charge consumption rates, which relate directly to the resulting vibration levels, can be examined for their susceptibility to variation from delay variability. Models that synthesize vibration waveforms for production blasts, when taking delay variability into account, indicate the difficulty in vibration level prediction.

In the year 1926, Edie Creek, in the Morobe District of the Mandated Territory of New Guinea, saw the greatest gold rush of recent years. Situated 35 miles inland from the coast, and at an altitude of over 6000 feet, Edie Creek presented to the original prospectors a wet, jungle-clad uninhabited, and inhospitable region. There were no roads; and the only means of approach from the equally inhospitable coast was by an eight to ten days' tramp through coastal swamps and gorge-scarred mountains. All food supplies and equipment had to be carried on the backs of "kanakas," and in many cases through country occupied by hostile natives.Since the first discovery of payable gold at Edie Creek, mining on the Morobe Goldfield has shown remarkable progress, and in spite of the tremendous natural difficulties, the field today ranks as one of the most important in Australasia.Aeroplanes, more than any other factor, have been responsible for this rapid development. They provide the only means of transport from the coast, and at present serve the needs of over 600 Europeans and 3000 indentured native labourers engaged in the industry.

COALEX Pry Limited operates two underground steaming coal mines on the western edge of the Sydney Basin near Lithgow, New South Wales. Baal Bone Colliery uses longwall technology for an output of over two million tonne/year while Clarence Colliery currently uses continuous miners and breaker line supports for an output of two million tonnelyear.A computerised geological database and modelling system has been implemented to service these mines routinely, as well as several outlying prospects. The database is constantly upgraded for drillhole information, surveyed spot levels on the surface and underground, quality sampling details, surveyed mine workings and geological mapping. This information is edited on a routine basis, allowing dynamic modelling of key aspects of geology for ongoing operations.

Ashton Mining Limited is currently one of the active companies undertaking gold exploration in Indonesia. Presently 7 Contract of Work areas are being explored for hard rock and alluvial gold. Hard rock exploration is focussed on the Tertiary volcanic arc terrains in which a variety of epithermal mineralisation styles have been identified. At the regional stage remote sensing techniques using Landsat, Spot and SLAR imagery where available, and photogeological studies are carried out in parallel with regional reconnaissance fieldwork programmes. These involve geological mapping and geochemical drainage sampling. Remote sensing techniques have proven useful in both the extrapolation of known geology and the identification of tectonically favourable settings as controls to mineralisation and volcanicity. The variety of mineralisation styles and settings is reflected in the highly variable geochemical signatures encountered. This has necessitated the refinement of sampling methods and sample preparation techniques for pan concentrate, stream sediment and soil samples in specific project areas. At the detailed prospect stage, mapping with particular attention to structural controls, wallrock alteration assemblages identified by petrog- raphy and XRD clay mineralogy, have proved useful in focussing drill targets. Drilling to date has utilised conventional diamond core drilling methods, the use of lightweight, man-portable "Winkie"-type rigs and hammer auger bedrock sampling systems. Geophysics methods successfully employed on various projects have included airborne magnetics and radiometrics, detailed ground magnetic surveys, VLF-EM and SIROTEM.

"Since the commencement of mining operations at the Cowal Gold Operations (CGO) in 2005, reverse circulation (RC) drilling has been the preferred method for grade control (GC) sample collection. This method was selected because it allowed:for multibench drilling (20 m hole depths for two benches of mining) to aid mine planning increased data density for comparison against the wide spaced ore reserve model angled drill holes to intersect perpendicular to the strike and dip of the shallow dipping mineralisation ability to take two metre sample intervals to enhance the understanding of the mineralisation’s short-scale variability and provide the ability to flitch mine.From June 2008 to December 2013, RC GC was performed using a UDR rotary cone splitter. The field duplicate data over the period displayed strong precision, with a correlation coefficient of 0.94 and an average relative per cent difference (RPD) of 21 per cent for gold. Up to 66.1 per cent of field duplicate data greater than 0.1 g/t fell within ±20 per cent RPD. This is within limits of industry best practice. The Mine to Mill reconciliations over the same period showed the estimated GC grade was 7.7 per cent lower than the calculated head grade (CHG).In December 2013, the Progradex sampling system (PGX) was introduced at CGO due to its advertised ability to capture 100 per cent of the drill cuttings for the complete sample interval, inclusive of fines. Analysis of field duplicate data indicates that since the introduction of the PGX, the sample precision has drifted. From January 2014 to February 2016, the correlation coefficient was 0.92 and up to 51.2 per cent of field duplicate data, greater than 0.1 g/t fell within the ±20 per cent RPD. Over the same 26 month period, the Mine to Mill reconciliation improved to one per cent lower than the CHG. Granulometric analysis of the RC samples collected from the PGX indicated the fines material(<212 µm) averaged up to 22 per cent of the samples mass and following assay determination, the fines material represented a weighted average of 31 per cent of the total gold content within the sample.This paper highlights the:importance of the complete capture of all drill cuttings during an RC drill programinfluence of fines material on the sample quality and accuracyimpact sampling of the fines material has on the Mine to Mill reconciliation performancechallenges experienced in commissioning a PGX system.Citation:Reid, B, 2016. The Louvicourt Mine is located 600 km north of Montreal in the province of Quebec, Canada. The owners are Aur Resources Inc (30 per cent), mine operator, Novicourt Inc (45 per cent) and Teck Corporation (25 per cent). It is an underground mechanised operation with a total work of 290 employees. Since 1994, the mine production is 11 120 456 tonnes at 3.60 per cent Cu, 1.51 per cent Zn, 26.07 g/mt Ag and 0.96 g/mt Au. At a rate of 4300 tonnes per day 365 days per year. Louvicourt Mine is a copper operation since 80 per cent of our revenue is from copper. The mining method is transverse blasthole stoping, mining primary and secondary stopes. The stope dimension is 15 m wide by 30 m high and 10 m to 80 m long for primary stopes. The secondary stopes are limited at 25 m long. Close to 100 000 metres of production drilling per year is required for 115 mm and 165 mm diameter holes. Backfilling is done with pastefill from the start of the operation in 1994. The binder ratio is 4.5 per cent in primary and two per cent in secondary stopes (80 per cent slag and 20 per cent cement). Development requirement to maintain production was 5000 m from 1996, 1997, 1998, 4200 in year 1999, 3200 m in year 2000 and an average of 2500 m in 2001 and 2002. Typical 6.0 m + 4.3 m, 4.9 m + 4.6 m and 4.5 m + 4.6 m headings. In addition more than 1500 metres of development will be excavated in/under paste backfill before 2004. A total of 60 mobile units are required among which for lateral development (three two boom electric hydraulic jumbos û AC Boomer 322, four electric hydraulic roofbolters û Maclean MEM-928 and AC Boltec PL350 and two anfo loader truck û Dux) and for production (four ITH drills û MTI, one electric hydraulic longhole drill û AC Simba H1357, eight LHD û AC-Wagner ST8-B, 1 LHD ST-1000 and two haulage 30 tons trucks û Dux. The 1 January 2002 reserves are 4.1 M tonnes grading 3.1 per cent Cu and 1.9 per cent Zn at an NSR (Net Smelter Revenue) of $US 53. The operating mining costs were at an average of $US 23 from 1996 to year 2000 and $US 25 in 2001. The operating costs ranged from a low of $US 0.41 per pound of copper in 1999 to a high of $US 0.49 per pound of copper in 1998.

Sheaves are a critical safety component in a winding system and are expected to survive such extreme loading events as rope break. Sheave designs have often been developed and evolved empirically, consequently many existing sheaves are not necessarily subjected to the detailed analyses that are possible using todayÆs design tools. The design philosophy for sheaves is that the rope should be the weakest link in the system so that associated equipment can function safely for any load up to rope break. A number of failure mechanisms must be considered, but buckling is often prominent. During the course of investigating the feasibility of upgrading the hoisting capacity of a winding system, the capacity of all critical components was reviewed. The sheaves in the system were found to have insufficient spoke buckling capacity for the specified rope. A proposal to increase the spoke buckling capacity by connecting spokes together using a simple tie arrangement was evaluated and found ineffective. An alternative tie arrangement concept was developed and evaluated and shown to be adequate. This paper describes the finite element model, analysis approach and results for the original sheave and the two modifications. The contribution of the sheave rim to the total buckling capacity is evaluated. Some practical issues for spoke tie modifications are discussed.

Traditional methods for installing gaskets for segmented bored tunnels have relied upon different bonding procedures with adhesives that carry a series of disadvantages to segment producers. Fixation of the gaskets into the concrete segment as part of the casting procedure has been developed over the last 20 years and has emerged as an economical solution to produce high-quality tunnel segments for various technical tunnel applications. This paper investigates the advantages of using anchored gaskets, the different tunnel systems that employ anchor gaskets and reviews the first anchor gasket project; the Lee Tunnel and analyses how segment production efficiencies are gained.CITATION:Gruber, T and Roseman, A, 2014. In 1975 the Commonwealth Government established import parity pricing for all liquid hydrocarbons discovered after the 16th September, 1975. These discoveries were termed "new oil" to differentiate them from existing discoveries and production. Overnight the price of the product being sought trebled, resulting in greatly enhanced economics by increasing the potential returns on existing prospects and by making smaller plays economically viable. After 18 years of drilling, the offshore Gippsland Basin has attained a moderate level of exploration for a basin of its size. Fifty seven prospects have been drilled within the basin but only a few of these were drilled along the southern and northern margins, while the deep water areas along the eastern margin have remained virtually undrilled following the Hapuku-1 oil discovery. The major hydrocarbon accumulations within the basin are trapped beneath the Latrobe Unconformity surface and exploration has largely concentrated on this single play in areas immediately adjacent to the major producing fields.

The movements of the major continental cratons and the distribution of the principal tectonostratigraphic terranes are reviewed in the Circum-Pacific region during Phanerozoic time. It is concluded that major periods of orogeny and consolidation of accreted terranes in the Circum-Pacific region is best correlated with periods of advance of cratonic blocks over the Pacific Ocean basin combined with relative convergent to transpressive motions between the cratons and the Pacific Ocean plates. Continental collisions and collision of terranes with continental margins has not been a significant geodynamic process in Circum-Pacific tectonic evolution. The permanency of the Pacific Ocean basin throughout 500 MA is remarkable. It appears no continental block or large continental fragment has ever entered or crossed the Pacific Ocean basin since early Paleozoic time. This area where no continent has entered for 500 MA is almost coincident with the present Pacific Ocean basin and seems associated with the 25 to 100 meter geoid high which dominates the present-day figure of the Earth.

Traditional acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD) wastewater treatment focuses on the iron co-precipitation/adsorption process as this is a very effective method of reducing heavy metals, including copper, lead, zinc, arsenic, etc, to parts per billion (ppb) levels in AMD wastewater streams. One of the drawbacks to this method however is the large volume of sludge produced and subsequent disposal costs for the mine site concerned.A proprietary metals treatment system called high density sludge (denoted HDS) which significantly reduces the quantity of waste generated is described in this paper. This process generates a dewatered sludge that contains in the order of 50 to 55 per cent solids. This sludge is denser than conventionally dewatered sludge, which typically contains only 20 to 30 per cent solids. This advanced process has a wide range of applications and can be easily retrofitted into existing AMD treatment systems. It has been successfully installed at several mine sites to treat AMD wastewaters. "The Syama Gold Mine, located in southern Mali, was established in 1990 by Broken Hill Propriety Limited (BHP). The operation began treating oxide, and in 1994 it transitioned to processing hard and refractory ore based on ‘whole-of-ore’ roasting. In 1996, BHP was succeeded by Randgold Resources and the operation ran until 2001, when it was placed into care and maintenance.The Syama ore is classified as a double refractory ore with pyrite occluding the fine grained gold present in the ore and high levels of organic carbon presenting a challenge in terms of preg-robbing behaviour. The ore is extremely competent and this combination of metallurgical features was the main source of metallurgical problems encountered by the previous owners.Resolute Mining Limited (RML) acquired the Syama project in 2004. Following a feasibility study and the development of a revised processing flow sheet the plant was recommissioned in 2008 using a combination of old and new equipment. The revised flow sheet enabled primary sulfide ore to be treated by flotation and roasting of the concentrate to produce a calcine suitable for conventional carbon-in-leach (CIL) processing.Commissioning and ramp up of the plant was a troubled process, with monthly gold production being as low as 3000 oz in 2010. Poor availability of equipment and lower-than-forecast recoveries were the primary contributors.During the last five years, RML has utilised a systematic approach to improve production, focusing on mechanical reliability, metallurgical recovery and process bottlenecks. Modifications to the circuit have been as a result of both innovation and the application of technological improvements. Improvements have been made to the flotation, roasting and CIL circuits and RML has introduced a deslime circuit to treat flotation concentrate, in addition to the very successful commissioning of a new 1 Mt/a oxide circuit in December 2014. These changes have resulted in gold production increasing to more than 20 000 oz per month in 2015.This paper presents the processes, change implementation and outcomes of the modifications made to the sulfide circuit to address the availability and recovery problems.Apart from the expansion of an existing, world-class deposit and discovery of new resources, future improvements on the path to a class-leading gold mine include the continued reduction of the unit cash cost, increase in overall sulfide circuit gold recovery, increased throughput through continued innovation and consistency in the plant’s operation.Citation:Sinclair, R, Hunter, I and Landwehr, D, 2016. A sulfide ion selective electrode was used to control sulfidiser addition in the flotation testing of a synthetic and a naturally occurring ore containing malachite in order to compare the behaviour of sodium sulfide and calcium polysulfide. Both slug and controlled potential sulfidisation methods of addition were used. Under defined optimum CPS conditions, calcium polysulfide was a more effective sulfidising agent than sodium sulfide on the basis of both capital and operating costs. Surface and solution studies were used to compare the mechanism of each sulfidiser. For calcium polysulfide, XPS showed that polysulfide ions are adsorbed, whereas for sodium sulfide it is the hydrosulfide ions that are adsorbed on the mineral surface. For calcium polysulfide, the CuSx layer was believed to form on the malachite surface, which promoted the flotation of the malachite, by xanthate. Studies of surface morphology of the sulfidised malachite showed that a fairly uniform sulfidised layer is formed with both reagents. The use of sodium sulfide resulted in a thinner initial sulfidised layer compared to polysulfide at equivalent initial sulfur concentration.

The article, as written, represents a short account of the treatment of the base bullion from the Broken Hill ores, as carried on at Port Pirie, for the recovery of lead, silver, and gold, and for the treatment of by-products. Appended is a short description of the chief facilities of plant which have been adopted to overcome the main difficulties in the refining of lead the Howard press and stirrer. The article is within the limit prescribed by the regulation for the prize offered by the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers, comprising 30 pages, containing an average of about 200 words per page, exclusive of analyses, photographs, and sketches.The writer desires to thank those to whom he is indebted for their- kindness in affording him every facility possible to obtain the information which he required for the success of such a paper-viz., Messrs. Robertson, Leavens, and Gronow, of the Broken Hill Propritary Co. Limited, at Port Pirie, and Mr. Crowther, of the Adelaide School of Mines, to whom he is indebted for photographs. The difficulty of obtaining fair samples of gold drosses, and the inability to obtain particulars of fuel consumptions, prevents the paper from being as complete as one would wish. The limited length precludes detail, except in more important parts.

Traditional method of explicitly defining three-dimensional (3D) ore-waste and geological boundaries relies heavily on a time-consuming process of manual digitisation. This method of modelling can be best described as surface modelling, as complex surface geometry is built up by digitising points that lie on the surface. With the advent of fast 3D interpolation methods, however, construction of geological surfaces using volume functions is now a practical alternative to explicit modelling of surfaces. Unlike explicit modelling, surfaces contained in volume functions are not explicitly defined or digitised. Instead the existence of surfaces in the volume function is implicit, thus the process of modelling surfaces from volume function is called æimplicit modellingÆ. Based on recent advances in fast scattered data interpolation methods, implicit modelling first defines a continuous three-dimensional function that describes the grade or rock distribution. This volumetric function is interrogated for a grade value, or a geological surface, thus allowing the extraction of the 3D object to be automated and eliminating the need to manually digitise surfaces. Since the function is continuous throughout space and does not depend on a mesh or grid for its definition, the extracted geological or grade wireframes can be constructed at any desired resolution in the specific volume of interest. The volume modelling method can work on scattered drillhole data of any data density, including processing combined information from dense grade control data as well as sparse resource drilling. It offers distinct advantages over surface modelling, including: being able to wireframe geological objects that may take days to digitise in tens of minutes; substantial improvement in modelling accuracy; and the ability to generate conditional models rapidly allowing mining risks inherent in geological modelling to be examined.

In this paper is given a description of the flotation plant recently erected by Broken Hill South Limited at the South Mine, Broken Hill, N.S.W. It has been built on the site of the old flotation plant, which was described in a previous paper published by the author. The present paper is supplementary to the former paper in that it replaced the following sections thereof, namely, those from end of the second paragraph, page 269, to the end of the first paragraph page 282, and from the end of the second paragraph, page 284, to the end of the third paragraph, page 302.The roll crushing, fine grinding, gravity concentration, filtration, disposal of products and sampling in the new plant are the same as described in the above mentioned paper.The reconstruction of the flotation section, described herein, completes the reconstruction and modernisation of the treatment plant which was begun in 1928. A description of these earlier alterations has already been published in the Proceedings of this Institute.
