"This paper discusses a method to build a calibrated comminution circuit model, using historic operating data and blend information that is useful for forecasting and optimising plant performance, as well as evaluating expansion opportunities. A preferred method for building a calibrated power-based comminution model is discussed and justified based on two case studies, offering low-cost and effective strategies to utilise existing information for the maximum possible benefit.The first example is the Lefa Gold Mine located in Guinea, West Africa operating a semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) and ball milling circuit with recycle crushing (SABC). Daily blend information and operating data was utilised to build and calibrate a power-based model of the comminution circuit. The least squares regression method was used to solve the SAG mill specific energy requirement and the operating work index (Wio) for each individual ore type. The calibrated model was used to evaluate expansion strategies to sustain throughput at higher proportions of fresh ore based on the proposed life-of-mine schedule.The second example is the Ok Tedi Copper-Gold Mine in Papua New Guinea operating a SAG and ball milling circuit (SAB). The circuit limitation would often shift between the SAG mill and the ball mill due to variable ore characteristics and feed blend. Typical SAG mill relief strategies, such as recycle crushing or secondary crushing, required significant capital expenditure and the potential throughput benefit would vary depending on ore type, making economic justification difficult. Daily blend information and operating data was used to build and calibrate a power-based model of the comminution circuit to identify ore types that might benefit from higher blast intensities to increase fines content, thus relieving the SAG mill limitation and increasing overall throughput without a major capital investment.Citation:Zawadski, A L and Putland, B G, 2016. A methodology for the inversion of a scaled charge weight superposition model to predict peak particle velocity (PPV) has been examined. The inversion involves two steps: first simulated annealing is used to get an initial estimate of the model parameters; and second, these parameters are used as input to a quasi-Newton non-linear optimisation method, used to refine the value of the parameters. The methodology recovers the three required parameters (two charge weight scaling parameters and a time window width) and does this directly from a single production blast for a given point of interest. It has been tested on a synthetic example and recovered the input model parameters successfully in the presence of introduced noise with a coefficient of variation ranging up to ten per cent. Another test used the vibration measurements of three tunnel blasts monitored during the construction of the Citybanan tunnel in Stockholm. In this case, the three model parameters are found from one blast and for a given point of interest, and the PPV at the same point of interest is predicted for the second and third blast fired in the same vicinity as the first blast. The three blasts used different firing sequences. The predicted PPV limits use a confidence interval determined from the scatter in the peak levels obtained from the single calibration blast. The methodology was able to predict an upper bound for the PPV in 21 of the 26 tunnel blast vibrations studied. These predictions improve on a previous study involving the same model but which did not use the inversion process above. The Platreef in South Africa contains one of the world’s largest reserves of platinum group elements. One of the major platinum group minerals (PGM) components in this ore is sperrylite (PtAs₂), which has been found to be slow floating compared to the other PGMs. In a study aimed at determining the reasons for the poor floatability of sperrylite and to improve its recovery, tests were carried out to determine the interactions of the mineral with a range of standard and novel collectors. Microflotation tests were carried out to determine the hydrophobicity of the minerals before and after adsorption of collectors. In addition, experiments were carried out to determine the enthalpy and extent of collector adsorption on the minerals and to investigate electrochemical interactions between sperrylite and selected standard collectors. The results indicated that poor collector adsorption was the major cause for the poor floatability of sperrylite. Sperrylite had both poor natural (14.5 per cent) floatability and collector-induced flotation recoveries, the highest recovery of 26 per cent being observed using PNBX collector at pH 9. Moreover, the rest potential tests showed that the interaction of sperrylite with standard collectors such as xanthates was poor. The decrease in potential after the addition of the standard collectors ranged from 7.9 mV to 24.9 mV under alkaline conditions. Furthermore, sperrylite rest potentials remained unchanged with a change in pH from basic to acidic, indicating its resistance to surface alteration. Surface alteration of the minerals is key for the chemisorption of collectors to take place on the mineral surface. This was further emphasised by flotation recoveries at low pH, where only certain collectors responded positively to a decrease in pH and these were shown to have undergone a structural change. This work has highlighted the difficulties associated with sperrylite flotation and provides some direction for future research.

Hydraulic mining shovels can be successively used at open-pit mining operation in severe climatic zone with air temperature interval from -700C to +450C typical for some northern region of the world particularly of Russia, Canada and Sweden, if they would be equipped by special preheating facilities for their diesel engine, water, hydraulic oil and lubrication systems. All shovels manufactured by the Komatsu Mining Germany GmbH for operation at ambient air temperatures down to -50¦C have cast and forged structural design elements, bolted connections made of special steel grades, electric cables with special insulation, flexible high-pressure hoses manufactured by ICE-Champion with connectors made of special steel grades.Generally at the temperatures below -25¦C the ordinary machine has to be stopped, the attachment should be placed in the parking position, the generator should be switched on, or the external electrical power supply connected, for the preheating equipment. For rapid start-up in winter after a long shutdown of a hydraulic shovel, there is a procedure for preheating of the main systems. It is applied for the following systems: engine cooling system, engine oil, hydraulic oil, pumps and drive motors of the propel gears, electric cabinets, machinery house, especially near the ventilation inlets and outlets.Start-up of the main drive engine is permitted at a hydraulic oil temperature of -20¦C, when it has a viscosity of 1000 cSt. In this case the rotation speed of the diesel engine crankshaft is lower by two times than the nominal value and this is the most favourable condition of start-up of the engine and hydraulic pumps and motors, which work with half of their rated rotation speed until the hydraulic oil reaches a viscosity from 100 to 10 cSt. After that the hydraulic system and the entire shovel begin to operate under normal conditions.

Alluvial mining even of shallow deposits is often economically a marginal proposition and causes significant disruption of the land surface through the need for large scale excavation. In-situ leaching using chlorine-based solutions eliminates the need for excavation, the disruption of surface activities, and may greatly reduce processing costs and improve recovery especially of fine gold. A spreadsheet model has been developed to design and analyse the economics of in-situ leaching of alluvial deposits. In-situ leaching of shallow deposits may be achieved in a number of ways including solution infiltration via perimeter ditches or the use of injection and production wells. In most instances deeper alluvials may only be processed using well systems. Two deposits are analysed in this paper. The first consists of one metre of payable wash beneath one metre of overburden. Some thirty fields per year are treated processing 450 000 BCM per year at a cut-off grade of around $4/tonne ($8/rn3 or the gold value equivalent of 0.26 gh or 0.52 g/m3). The principal costs are well drilling and labour. Sensitivity analysis indicates that doubling the throughput halves the cost. The economics of the project are relatively insensitive to reagent costs and consumptions, and halving the recovery doubles the cut-off grade. Shallow deposits treated using the infiltration ditch system may be marginally cheaper and more conveniently managed although this depends on the relative cost of digging the perimeter ditches. In a second example, deep leads with one metre of wash beneath 30 metres of overburden necessitate significant drilling and feature reduced throughputs as a consequence. In the example chosen 30 fields a year are processed for an annual throughput of 65 000 tonnes costed at around $20/tonne (1.4 g/t Au equivalent, $40 /m3). Sensitivity analysis indicates that throughput, and drilling cost per metre are not important but there is a high sensitivity to recovery and to the depth to payable wash.

The Thabazimbi iron ore deposit comprises a series of stratabound orebodies, on average 18 - 25 m thick that are aligned along the faulted basal contact between the Penge Iron Formation and dolostones of the Malmani Subgroup, Transvaal Supergroup. Field geological relationships and petrographic observations suggest that the formation of high-grade iron ores took place after contact metamorphism related to the intrusion of the Bushveld Complex (2.06 Ga) but before the deposition of red beds of the Waterberg Group at ca 1.9 Ga. Hard, high-grade iron ores are predominantly composed of martite and microplaty hematite. Goethite is restricted to supergene-modified ores close to the Late Cretaceous û Early Cenozoic Old African land surface. At depth, the high-grade hematite ores interfinger with low-grade dolomite-hematite and calcite-hematite ores. Iron oxides (martite, microplaty hematite) present in these low-grade ores are texturally indistinguishable from those in the associated high-grade ores, ie ore formation is genetically associated with carbonate metasomatism. Microthermometric studies of fluid inclusions in sparitic carbonates and rare megaquartz reveal their hydrothermal origin. Two compositionally distinct aqueous fluids of shallow crustal origin are identified, namely a Ca-Na-rich high-salinity brine (26 wt per cent NaClequivalent, TH ~160¦C), and an aqueous Mg-K-bearing fluid of intermediate salinity (8.3 - 12.6 wt per cent NaClequivalent, TH~120 - 150¦C). The results confirm that high-grade hematite orebodies at the Thabazimbi deposit owe their origin to an event of extensive oxidative carbonate metasomatism (calcification), similar to that recognised at other important high-grade iron ore deposits in the world. Hydrothermal ore formation is both structurally and lithologically controlled. Size and quality of the orebodies was improved by Late Mesozoic-Cenozoic deep lateritic weathering as carbonate-hematite ores were enriched to friable high-grade ores, but this supergene modification is second in importance compared to the primary event of hydrothermal ore formation.

Surface displacements are routinely monitored at multiple points during slope excavation. The monitoring data reveals the safety status of the slope under current loading conditions. They can be used to enhance the prediction of the future performance of the slope by reducing the uncertainties of the prediction model and its model parameters. In a multistage excavation, the observed displacements in the current stage can be used to update the prediction of the displacements in subsequent stages. Besides, due to the spatial correlation of the slope parameters, the prediction of the displacement at one location can also be updated using the monitored displacements at adjacent locations. This study aims to develop a multistep updating method to enhance the prediction of the future performance of the slope using time-series monitoring data at multiple points. This method integrates the theoretical computational model with observational evidence. It considers the inherent uncertainty of the slope, model uncertainty and measurement uncertainty. With more monitoring information being incorporated, the prediction becomes closer to the actual performance of the slope. Gosowong is situated within the Neogene magmatic arc of Halmahera island in the Maluku province of eastern Indonesia. It was discovered as the result of a rigorous ground reconnaissance program in an area with no previous mining activity. The broad structural setting in the Gosowong District comprises an elongate dome formed by the forceful upward intrusion of magma along a deep-seated structure, resulting in associated tensional fracturing trending parallel to the long axis of the dome. Four copper-gold porphyries and numerous low-grade epithermal veins occur within this mineralised corridor, with the Gosowong Deposit being the only economic occurrence discovered to-date. Gold mineralisation is hosted within multiphase epithermal quartz-adularia and quartz-chlorite fissure veins, breccias, and stockworks. High-grade gold mineralisation is emplaced in two gently south-plunging ore shoots along a 400 m section of the north-striking, east-dipping, Gosowong Fault, the primary control on mineralisation. The Gosowong Fault is believed to be a tensional fracture associated with uplift of the dome. Lithological variation and structural intersections play a large role in grade distribution within the vein zone. Host rocks comprise a wide range of shallow marine, intermediate-basic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks of ?late Miocene age. The Gosowong gold deposit is a classic example of a low-sulphidation epithermal gold deposit, based on the abundance of adularia and illite in the alteration assemblage, and low base-metal sulphide content within quartz-adularia veins. The indicated resource is estimated at 0.99 Mt at 27 g/t Au and 38 g/t Ag for a total of 870 000 ounces Au, using a cut-off grade of 2 g/t Au.

The pyrite oxidation rate is a process central to both the performance of bio-oxidation heaps, used in the pre-treatment of some refractory gold ores, and to the levels of pollution in acid rock drainage (ARD) from pyritic waste rock dumps. A goal in bio-oxidation heaps is to achieve high oxidation rates in the heap as a whole. In comparison, one way to mitigate the environment impact of ARD, is to reduce the overall oxidation rate in the waste rock dump since pyrite oxidation is the primary pollutant generation process. In both bio-oxidation heaps and waste rock dumps the overall oxidation rate of the pyritic material (the intrinsic oxidation rate) at these sites. Much research has been conducted over the last 40 years or so on the oxidation rate of pyritic material with particular emphasis on the catalytic role played by bacteria. More recently mathematical models and field measurements have clarified the extent to which oxygen transport rates are rate limiting, what the dominant oxygen transport mechanisms are and the physical properties of the heaps which have most impact on these transport rates and on the overall oxidation rate. How the performance of bio-oxidation heaps can be optimised and how the pollution load in drainage from waste rock dumps depends on gas transport mechanisms is briefly reviewed. The sensitive of the overall oxidation rate in bio-oxidation heaps and waste rock dumps to details of the intrinsic oxidation rate is quantified.

Bendigo Mining Limited has established a modern underground gold mine and processing plant at Bendigo in central Victoria. The Bendigo goldfield produced around 22 000 000 oz of gold between 1851 and 1954. Approximately 4 000 000 oz were sourced from surface alluvial workings with the remaining 18 000 000 oz won from underground quartz reefs. The modern mine is accessed via the Swan Decline, which commences at the Kangaroo Flat site on the southern outskirts of Bendigo and progresses in a north easterly direction between the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines, reaching a depth of almost 1000 m below the City of Bendigo. Development of this decline commenced in 1998. Since that time 20 km of underground development has been completed. Exploration drilling, on-reef development and bulk sampling carried out between 1999 and 2005 resulted in the estimation of a Probable Ore Reserve of 700 000 tonnes at 9.0 g/t gold for 207 000 oz of gold. These Ore Reserves were contained within four reefs located on the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines. Reef mining commenced in late 2005 from the Shywolup and Greater Garrard reefs. Material mined was stockpiled on the surface in preparation for commissioning of the process plant which commenced in mid 2006. Mining and processing were carried out between August 2006 and May 2007 during which time 176 000 tonnes were processed at an average grade of 5.4 g/t gold to produce 26 735 oz of gold. Plant feed was sourced from four reefs. This paper discusses some of the issues which were encountered with the definition and mining of these geologically variable and nuggetty reefs. This paper covers exploration techniques, grade estimation, mine geological control, mining methods, geotechnical issues and reconciliations. It will also discuss some of the lessons learnt and how these will be applied to future Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimation, as well as underground operations.

During the middle of this century, exploration and mining reached a low ebb in New Zealand. Tas McKee did his utmost to rejuvenate the mining industry, using the latest technology and an understanding of the environment far ahead of his time. Today, advances in the geosciences enable sophisticated exploration to proceed to the drilling stage before any significant environmental disturbance is created. Thereafter developments are now carried out with integrated management of the environment and rehabilitation so that disturbed land can be used for other purposes once mining is finished. Thus, we now have environmental engineers and scientists taking their place as professionals in our Institute.

Various analysis techniques are used to determine the nature of a large seismic event that was triggered by a mass blast in an underground mine. This event was recorded by surface accelerometer arrays whose output was doubly integrated using a stable filter to determine the dynamic displacements. The peak dynamic displacements during the blast were 0.09 mm, and during its latter stages, this blast induced a seismic event having a peak dynamic displacement more than ten times larger at 1.26 mm. Polarisation analysis, based on the complex covariance matrix, showed that the seismic event was caused by movement of a known underground fault, close to the blast, which radiated most of its release motion as a shear-horizontal (SH) wave. The change in frequency content with time for the blast and seismic event was initially determined using the Fourier-based reassigned S-method. This analysis showed that the large amplitude seismic event had frequency content significantly lower than that of the blast. Nevertheless, this Fourier technique still retains the problems associated with short time windows as well as the fact that most realistic signals are non-stationary. In order to eliminate such influences, the more recently developed empirical mode decomposition (EMD) was used to obtain the intrinsic mode functions (IMF) of the seismic wave propagation. The EMD vibration analysis showed that each IMF generally exhibited distinct frequency changes throughout the blast and a significant reduction in frequency throughout the subsequent event. It is shown that most of the energy of the seismic event is contained in IMF modes 2, 3 and 4 of the SH wave; the high-frequency first mode (IMF1) contains little energy. The Henty Gold Mine, located in Western lasiuania use, uuiusatise solutions to effectively manage a mining operation in an environmentally sensitive setting and has been presented with several environmental awards. Fill is required as part of the mining method to provide passive ground support, minimise rock exposure and ensure maximum recovery of the small but high-grade orebody. The use of the whole portion of leach residue in the backfill reduces the surface tailing disposal requirements. Therefore, High Density Paste Fill (HDPF) has been selected as the most appropriate fill method to meet these objectives. Additional benefits include the minimisation of excess water from fill and the subsequent need for the collection and treatment of water and slimes. There are minimal equipment requirements during placement, thereby optimising mine resources for production. The initial paste fill design was based on the Bad Grund and Ranunelsberg Mines paste fill systems of Preussag in Germany and comprised pumping filtered tailings paste some 1.2 kin uphill from the mill to the mine portal, where cement was to be added before being distributed underground. The system was designed following initial testwork that was undertaken on a bulk sample of ore mined from the scar surface Sill Zone. Subsequently, during the mining of the Zone 96 orehody, it was found that there were significant mineralogical variations in the composition of the ore mined. Following processing, the resultant Icach residue caused significant changes in the paste rheology and therefore the pump and flow characteristics. An alternative solution was implemented that involved the use of agitator trucks to transport the cemented paste to the portal. This required modifications to the fill preparation system and also the underground distribution system. Laboratory strength tests of the HDPF using actual gold plant leach residue showed low early strengths were attained with HDPF containing only filtered leach residue. Therefore, high binder addition rates or an increase in the fill cycle time would be required to allow the fill to gain sufficient strength. A considerable amount of potentially acid generating waste rock also requires underground disposal. By blending the waste rock with the HDPF, the strengths were improved and the required cement addition rate reduced by about one-half. The potentially acid funning waste rock is encapsulated in the highly alkaline cemented paste, minimising the potential for acid generation.

Hidden under picturesque Bemic Lake, in Canada's eastern Manitoba, lies a highly fractionated pegmatite orebody, hosting a unique assemblage of minerals. Accidentally discovered in 1929, the orebody had a brief history as a tin producer, but it is now mined by Tantalum Mining Corporation of Canada, Ltd. (TANCO), for its cesium, lithium, rubidium and tantalum bearing minerals. The mine also has potential for mbidium-feldspar, amblygonite, gallium rich mica, and quartz production. This paper describes the geology of the orebody, and its mining and processing. Selective, concurrent, mining and milling of the various products necessitates a high degree of planning and control, and these aspects are also discussed. The introduction of Quality Control and SPC are discussed, for such are the keys to excellence.

In the Waiotapu geothermal area only Champagne Pool, 109 ng/L, and Waiotapu Geyser, 7.6 ng/L, have dissolved Au concentrations greater than 5 ng/L and most springs have concentrations less than 2 ng/L. When Au concentration data are combined with other physico-chemical data from each spring including; pH, reduced sulphur concentration and temperature, the degree of Au saturation can be calculated. All samples sites except Champagne Pool, Waiotapu Geyser and the Artists Palette are under-saturated with respect to Au(s) by 1 to 3 orders of magnitude. This indicates that adsorption or co-precipitation or both are important processes depositing Au beneath hot springs. Deposition of Au by adsorption or co-precipitation beneath hot springs implies that dissolved Au may not have to reach saturation concentrations for ore to deposit. This interpretation is supported by the presence of substantial Au as sub-microscopic components within sulphide minerals in ore deposits and indicates depositional efficiency beyond that possible through precipitation of Au(s).

The influence of feed size and pulp density on the specific rate ofbreakage of quartz was investigated. Plots of log fraction of feedremaining within the feed size interval against grinding time allowed the application of the first order grinding model to be examined. Substantial non-linearities were observed for all feed sizes due to environmental and material factors. For feed sizes above 1.3 mm, the specific rate of quartz breakage was higher with rod milling than ball milling, but below this size the reverse was true. Material that remained in the feed size interval after the initial grinding broke more slowly in subsequent grinding than the original feed material. Grinding media and time as well as feed size influenced the effects of pulp density on grinding. More dilute pulps (eg 50 per cent solids density by weight) were favoured for higher rates of breakage in rod milling but for ball milling, the optimum pulp density appeared to be 60 to 70 per cent solids by weight.

Thermal conditions at depths of several k.i'-.r.,etres in hydrothermal systems are a major (actor controlling gold transport into the epithermal environment. Understanding of the coupling of thermal, metal and ligand (HZZ S) sources in the root zones of hydrothermal systems therefore becomes important for the application of tectonic and igneous petrochem- ical studies to regional scale precious metal exploration. The evaluation of favourable conditions in this source zone and application to explor- ation rests on a detailed knowledge of the gases, H2S, CO2 hydrocarbons and other trace components preserved in fluid inclusions. Recent developments in analytical techniques now permit examination of these components and the recognition of complex hydrocarbons in rluid inclusions from epithermal and other lydrothermal systems appears promising for ieoosit-source correlation.

Study of the distribution of minor elements between copper matte andfayalite slag is important in determining appropriate methods tomaximise the recovery of valuable metals and the rejection of harmfulelements. Boliden Mineral AB operate a large copper smelter in northern Sweden, where they had noted that the loss of silver to the slag in the settling furnace appeared to be a direct function of the tin content of the slag. This work was aimed at determining whether or not this was a cause-and-effect relationship. Copper matte containing approximately 50 wt per cent copper and small amounts of silver and tin was equilibrated with silica-saturated fayalite slag at 1250¦C, then quenched. The matte and slag were then analysed for their silver and tin contents. It was found that there was no relationship between the silver distribution and the tin distribution. The silver matte/slag distribution ratio had a value of 120 ¦ 40 while that for tin was 2.8 ¦ 0.3. It is suggested that the most likely cause of the relationship observed at the Boliden smelter was matte entrainment in the slag.
